Obama said an economic stimulus package will be his first priority.
Obama said an economic stimulus package will be his first priority.

(CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama urged Congress on Saturday to work next week on a plan to help the country's economy and in particular address unemployment insurance.

"If Congress does not pass an immediate plan that gives the economy the boost it needs, I will make it my first order of business as president," he said in his weekly address, which is posted online.

"I urge them to pass at least a down payment on a rescue plan that will create jobs, relieve the squeeze on families and help get the economy growing again," he said.

"In particular, we cannot afford to delay providing help for the more than one million Americans who will have exhausted their unemployment insurance by the end of this year."

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Thursday, 76 percent of Americans said they believe it is likely that Obama will improve economic conditions. In addition, 73 percent of those surveyed said they believe that Obama will bring stability to the financial markets.

Obama, who won 53 percent of the popular vote on November 4, takes office January 20. Many have compared the obstacles that face him to those Franklin Delano Roosevelt confronted when he won the 1932 election.

"Make no mistake," Obama warned Saturday. "This is the greatest economic challenge of our times."

However, he added, "I am more hopeful than ever that America will rise once again."

How can we be elitist and lazy liberals @ the same time? Your arguments are empty and smack of desperation. Ever been laid off because it seems alot of you have no perspective. Good luck in life and god bless.

THANK YOU... all we can do is pray for the man and our country... and pray that they can watch Bush close enough to stop him from completing his MISSION to destroy this country in the name of making himself and his cronnies richer than they already are. After all... they will be able to afford to jet off this planet when it gets TOO HOT for life here! The rest of us could just fry for all they care!

The three automotive companies spent themselves into bankruptcy to get out from under the unions. They did this with the full knowledge and compliance of President Bush and the outgoing Repubicans in Congress. They will go bankrupt, reorganize, and the union will be out. See if I am right.

Without jobs, this county will go nowhere fast. We need to kick start this economy fast, like yesterday. One of the problems i see with this is that President Elect Barack Obama cannot do much officially until he takes office inaugaration day January 20, 2009. Current President Bush may do whatever is possible, without getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar, to make things difficult for Obama so that he, Obama, does not credit for any early success. After all, good old boy Georgie boy does not want anything to tarnish his legacy as he exits the stage.

As for the current administration, your time is almost up!

Don't let the golden doors of the White House hit you on the way out.

Congress can get started but, without a 60 seat democrat senate there will be no serious change.

The republican party is not going to give up on cheap labor, defunct social programs, or tax shelters for the rich as long as they have a filibuster to block progress.

They have already shifted the wealth to the top few percent so they can sit back and obstruct while enjoying the good life.

Mike Dallas   November 15th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

While I do still have a job, I feel sympathy for those who do not and whose unemployment benefits are about to expire. No income, no savings and no help from the Reptilian party in Congress to extend the benefits.

Very sad, that they are willing to force families into a desperate situation just because NOW they want smaller government.

The U.S. is holding it's breath until Obama is our president. In the meantime Pres.Bush it seems, is doing everything he can to show Obama who is the boss.I wish we could just impeach him and be done with his reign of terror on this country!

We all have the responsibility now to be educated on what is going on in Congress. We need to be supportive of those who favor positive change and support ideas that will lead this country out of financial turmoil and onto stable ground.

If Obama's request for what to do about the economy to President Bush failed after he did what the democrats wanted by throwing more money at it, you Bush-haters would blame Bush and not Obama who pushed the policies. Also Obama wants all the money thrown at the economy now so he can use it against the republicans in 2012 about the deficits. Let the companies fix themselves through bankrupcy court and no way Americans should bail out people who got mortages for homes they could not pay for in the first place. Let them work it out with their mortage company. We have people around here who say on the radio that they do not have to pay their house payment or car payments since Obama was elected and will take care of them.

We will not survive unless the republicans START putting our
country first. They MUST work will ALL of congress to try
and right their mismanagement of the last eight years.
They must stop their postering, finger pointing, ego trips,
negativity and start doing what is right.
I have yet to hear them talk about or admit any responsibility
for what has happened to our country,
Americans we must shot loud and clear that we have had
ENOUGH!!!!

ON 1/21/09, OBAMA WILL BE OFFICALLY IN THE DRIVERS SEAT. EITHER HE WILL END HIS OFFICE WITH THE FAME OR THE BLAME. THOUGH I AM A HILLARY SUPPORTER, I WOULD LIKE IT IF OBAMA DOES A GOOD JOB, BUT AGAIN IT WILL BE THE FAME OR THE BLAME AT THE END OF THE STORY. GOOD LUCK AND REMEMBER JUST BECAUSE I DID NOT VOTE FOR BARACK THIS TRIP IN FOUR YEARS IT WILL BE MY HONOR TO VOTE FOR HIM OR MY SITUATION THAT PREVENTS ME FROM VOTING FOR HIM.

2012 ;-)

Please remember Barack is not our President yet. Bush still has control and he WILL do a lot more harm before he leaves office in 2 months.
Obama will face huge challenges helping America recover from the near fatal condition Bush will leave us with.

Richard Nelson   November 15th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

It will be difficult to remedy the Barack Market. The first step will require admission that Frank's promotion of Fannie and Freddie and deadbeat debtors caused the crisis.

Annjell   November 15th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

I feel that Obama really feels the pain of Americans. However, I feel the GOP will do everything in its power to make Obama fail. Should this happen, I don't believe the GOP will ever be forgiven for this and they can kiss the entire party goodbye. Afterall, there are other parties gaining more attraction – Independents.

I say this, because, now that Bush is leaving office, he is doing everything he can with deregulations to destroy the economy. Now I am hearing the credit card companies are getting ready to raise interest rates on credit cards – REALLY?

I truly feel that the GOP is trying to govern and rule like the middle eastern countries – like, say, the Ayatollah's and Imams. Why is religion taking center front in our elections? They've taken prayer out of the schools. However, with the recent behavior of these churches, maybe, just maybe, this was with good reason. So can we now take it out of politics?

I believe if Obama has to spend his first term reversing all of the laws, regulations, executive orders of the Bush administration, he deserves a second term. Not only that, we, the American people have no idea what have really taken place here – we won't know until the new administration takes office. This is because, what is supposed to be news is not really news or just excerpts of the news.

Sad, but true, I have to look at BBC and Bloomberg to balance what I see on any news I watch. Why, because, instead of news, we get Britney Spears or Sarah Palin shoved down our throats. I subscribed to cable news to get news, not to listen to soundbites about the likes of Britney or Sarah.

You want to talk about Sarah, then talk about why she treated your newscasters like they were the paparrazi. Talk about why she likes to control the interview. Talk about why you are still covering her after she called you guys jerks and stinkers. Talk about her lack of education and her resemblance to Jack Kingston of Georgia. Talk about how she's a motor mouth – talking but not saying much – gee, she gets on my nerves.

Trevor, SD   November 15th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

It's so good to know that we'll have a president who's focussed on us, for a change. The GOP doesn't deserve to be in leadership, they've squandered the trust between the government and the people. They need to be in exile for awhile.

Anna   November 15th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

of course I am not referring to when, as in the case of LBJ/RMN, the incumbent steps down or decides not to seek another term...
then again, we all know the results of those elections following too.

Oh, I was kidding BHO!
Whip our 'esteemed' Congress into shape-we need resourceful legislation that will help stimulate our economic growth and alleviate our woe!

Anna   November 15th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Some of you people are funny predicting a Hillary Clinton plot to overthrow Obama in 2012.
If there was ever a moment in our electoral history when a Party member challenged their own incumbent for the Office of the Presidency after his first term...and prevailed, no less, tell us about it.
I am curious.

The whole idea is absurd. The Party may as well admit the failure of their own Administration and hand the power over to the Enemy.

Boy, I am glad I dont have a lot of extra money to do much more these days than read some of this stuff. So entertaining. Hold that thought BO about economic improvement.

David   November 15th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

One major issue I don't see discussed is the very basic fact that housing values were 'falsely' increased, based on the funny loans giving the impression that buyers were able to afford the much higher home prices. What needs to happen is the financial institutions eat the 'false' increase in home value so that we balance out. If we continue to pretend that a $200k home is worth $350k with extended payments, the homeowner will still take a loss when selling, since few people will be able to afford the property in the real world. Which will still bring down home values across the nation.

Greg, San Francisco, CA   November 15th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Am reading FDR by Jean Edward Smith now and the parallels between what faced FDR in 1932 and what faces Obama in 2009 are uncanny. If Obama is half the President FDR was we'll make it out OK. Big difference then is that Congress and the public were eager to cede responsibility and power to FDR to make the decisions. Don't think that will be the case for Obama. Every move he makes will be blasted by the far right whether it is a good move or not.

Danny   November 15th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

President-elect Barack Obama's White House chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel has apologised to the US-Arab community for remarks made by his father.
I got this news from BBC. CNN, why don't you publish such news just because it is negative. You are biased.

ben   November 15th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

President elect Barrack Obama
Please research the major car companies and learn how much money they make in foreign countries. You must know a ford made in Mexico pays no taxes nor do they pay a tarif for the cars the import into the U.S.
Why do the American based car manufaturers get to show huge losses, and pay no taxes while at the same time are reaping huge profits from
their products made abroad? Does it make sense to give these vultures mare money to keep on expoiting the Americans

Kathleen Reiter   November 15th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Do not give illegal immigrants access to our social security benefits as the democratic congress is trying to do...we are tired
of these bleeding heart liberals giving in to illegals. Stop this
injustice now, President-Elect Obama!

latina-obama 2012   November 15th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

The election of Barack Obama had the effect of prying open a window in a stale room. You can breathe again. Not everybody, of course. The neoconservatives are in shock. Suddenly they have no administration in Washington. The White House is enemy territory, soon to be staffed by people who do not see the world in black and white.

It is my experience that you can't be that hopeful of the future when faced with such depressing news unless you have faith in a higher power. When you persevere through trials, God builds your character, which produces hope in circumstances that crush many and a faith in God that will NOT disappoint.

Energy runs the Economy and the Enron Scheme for Oil under Bush bankrupted the world.

Now that Bush and the Gang of Energy theifs have gone bust the price of oil is ALMOST down to pre-Bush levels.

It wasn't supply and demand it was corner the market and get rich quick now they are all so happy the world is bankrupt.

facts are facts   November 15th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Unfortunately after listening to some of the Republican party members it doesn't look like they have a grasp of the current situation in the U.S.

If they decide to let GM and the other 2 auto companies go down the result will not only be the loss of Millions of jobs for Americans but it will also be a loss of Government revenue required to keep these unemployed people solvent with unemployment benefits etc.

With most manufacturiing jobs being held by people with high school educations or less will mean their chances of finding employment at a living wage almost impossible for a long time to come.

The Republican rhetoric that new businesses can be started will be of no consequence to the millions of automaker related job losses as most will not be able to start up their own businesses or work at any new businesses than might be started.

Shannon   November 15th, 2008 11:52 am ET

why didn't he work to fix the economy while he was in the senate. Let's hope he's more successful as a President than he was a Senator. Name one thing he did to help the economy wile as a Senator, oh that's right he took tons of money from Freddie and Fannie. Got it!

There IS hope for the future>>>   November 15th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Currently, Washington is helping to "bailout" the large companies. That's good in itself, but, the American people need help also. Get the money down and back into the consumers hands and the economy will prosper. Some call it socialism, some call it spread the wealth, some say welfare, etc, etc.... No matter what you call it or how you look at it, the people need money to spend to build the companies back up. Lots of people are losing their jobs through no fault of their own. If people are not spending, it serves good for no one...

"Many have compared the obstacles that face him to those Franklin Delano Roosevelt confronted when he won the 1932 election".

Who are the many? The MEDIA (cover page of Time)? Historians? I would think that nearly all the people have no clue about the "depression" let alone that an election was held in 1932 three years after the "crash".

For those asking what change because of the posts that are due to be given to the politicians, I don't think either of them have ever held a job that the President is going to give them

Clinton has never been a secretary of state=change
Kerry has never been an sos=change
Bill richie sos=change
susan rice sos=real change
hagel sos= real real change

What else do you people want. I am sure some of you were among those that said Palin is one of them despite her unqualified stature......

isn't obama still being paid to be a senator, maybe he should also be working with the senate instead of urging others to do the job. or is he too good to do the job he's presently being paid to perform? maybe the paycheck should be returned since he's not earning it for the intended purpose, maybe return the last few years checks since he did say he's been campaining for over 2 years.

mitch   November 15th, 2008 10:59 am ET

the 'lame duck' will 'forget' how to sign his name. nothing will get done until the republicans are out of power, after jan. 20th. republicans are more worried about their 'brand', than solving our nation's problems. they should have kept the motto of 'separation of church and state'. anyone who doesn't look or pray like them is 'immoral' or 'terrorist sympathizer'. they made the war against al-quaeda, a 'religious war', by their pathetic attempts to smear president barack by portraying him as a 'closet' muslim with terrorist's ties. turns out he's more 'american' than any of them. the rest of us recognize this, and the republican 'brand' will never recover.....

lol   November 15th, 2008 10:57 am ET
