Bill Clinton says his wife would make a great secretary of state.

(CNN) — Former President Bill Clinton is weighing in on the possibility of his wife becoming secretary of state, saying the New York senator would "be really great" in the post.

"She loves doing what she is doing. But if she decided — if he decided to ask her to do it and they did it together I think she'd be really great at being secretary of state," Clinton said Sunday during an economic conference in Kuwait hosted by the National Bank of Kuwait.

But the former president made clear his wife did not seek out a job offer.

"She worked very hard for his election after the primary fight they had and so did I and we were very glad that he won and we have a lot of confidence that he can do a good job. But she did not do what she did with the hope or expectation of getting any kind of job offer, much less getting this discussed," he said.

The New York senator is reportedly on Obama's shortlist for the position. Sources tell CNN New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is also in the running.

Ignorance will not save you. So many of you are blaming Obama even before he takes office. This is the mess of the Bush administration, the Clinton years, Bush 1 and yes, Reagan for that matter, and his trickle down economics. It may take Obama more than his first administration to dig out of this hole, but as a patriotic american, which I am so sure that all of you haters are, right, you will roll up your sleeves and get to work. And you'd better pray hard every night that Obama is successful, because what is at stake is your home, your job, your kids and your grandkids futures. At this point it's not about whose right it's about what's left after this economic tsunami subsides.

Chris   November 17th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

What exactly makes H. Clinton qualified to be Secretary of State?
As the Secretary of State she would be the official responsible for foreign policy, the most senior position in the president's cabinet, and the fourth in the presidential line of succession. Not to mention the Secretary of State is also, in protocol, the first cabinet member in the order of precedence, immediately preceding any former presidents and former first ladies, who are followed by the rest of the Cabinet.

Sen Obama proved he could get elected without the Clintons. Now he needs to proved he doesn't need her to have these responsibilities. Put he in charge of healthcare.

CanIcallyouJoe   November 17th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

No. Mistake.

Hillary Clinton is the wrong person for Secretary of State. Period.

Helene   November 17th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Attorney General would be much wiser.

Sunny   November 17th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

What is Bill's problem? Why does he have to comment on a thing which is not eve on the table? Looks like Clintons are not only selfish but are greedy for power. These power-hungry people would jump on even a slightest hint and make it so public that Obama would look bad if he does not do it. Same way as they publicized the VP thing for Hillary.

Come on Clinton, get used to the notion of being common people fopr some time. We gave you a chance and you blew it up by getting blowed! Now, your temper is not only going to make you the worst loser who is so sore that he acts like a 8 year old kid, but it will also make you the worst ex-president of the USA.

So, please, with respect, Mr. Bill Clinton, stop poking your nose into your wife's affairs. You are doing her way more harm than justice to her efforts. She is very much capable to reach the top without you pushing from behind.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 17th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

I'd love to get Hillary out of NY state. Please pick her!

Ron   November 17th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Due to the Clinton ties with foreign leaders and past dealings, many financial gains with foreign dealings, I think Richardson should be put in as secretary of state. The right wingers would have a field day with Clinton and it would come back to bite Obama in 2012.

Instead, put Clinton in as attorney general.

Mary - Independent   November 17th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

It would be nice if Hillary would be asked to fill the position of Secratary of State – Richardson does not have as strong
qualifications of International Affairs. If Bill Clinton would just stay out,
Hillary might have a chance.

Stop complainning   November 17th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Just because President Obama is surrounding his self with familiar faces does not mean that he is not about change. What he is doing is bringing back some of the old players in washington that got the job done when Clinton was in office. You go with what you know works not guessing or experimenting with people lives. We have done that enough and that has gotten us to this point. If you don't like what he is doing RUN AGAINST HIM IN 2012 If not then shut up.

SIMP   November 17th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Nobody said she asked for the job Bill. You need to chill out. yes Hillary campaigned for Obama and that's great. You need to let Hillary speak for HIllary and not you. Obama will select who he wants for the job, personally the two hillary and bill richardson either is fine with me.
I would perfer Colin Powell over either one of these.

WELCOME TO THE OBAMA SHOW   November 17th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

BET OBAMA PICKS BILL RICHARDSON ANOTHER LOSER!!!!!!!!!

OBAMA SHOULD PICK HILLARY BUT HILLARY IS MUCH SMARTER THAN HE IS!!!!!!!!!!!

OBAMA WANTS A BUNCH OF PUPPETS ON A STRING!!!!!!!!!!!!

WELCOME TO THE OBAMA SHOW   November 17th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

IF HE SOMEHOW WINS HIS ELECTION IT WILL PROVE JUST HOW CROOKED THIS COUNTRY REALLY IS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mohsen Emami   November 17th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

In my humble opinion, Hillary Clinton would be the most qualified and the very best candidate for the Secretary of State position.

Canadian Girl   November 17th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I'm Canadian, I live about 20 min from a major US city… I can't even begin to explain the overwhelming sense of RELIEF when Obama was elected…it's like a heavy blanket has been lifted from our shoulders, not only in Canada, but the WORLD! Yay! I'm proud of our neighbours for getting it right! Not only that, we are thrilled, because the Bush Adminstration decided for 8 years to isolate the States from its allies, and its BROTHER – Canada. To say that we as Canadians have NEVER felt such strain between two nations during this time is an understatement. In saying this – I think Clinton will make a wonderful addition to the White House Administration – her level of experience on the GLOBAL WORLD STAGE is great!!! Good luck all! Welcome back!

Niky   November 17th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Why would Richardson feel bad if HRC gets SOS. Didnt he say, when he endorsed Obama, that he wasnt doing it for a cabinet position?!

Jonas   November 17th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Did Bill Clinton help OBAMA win the election???? Surely not in VA or IN. He couldn't bring himself to admit that OBAMA was qualified to be
commander in chief until the last minute when OBAMA' s victory was
evident. I wouldn't be surprised If Bill and Hillary secretly voted for
John McCain

"Strong, tough, smart and what a poke in the eye to the misogynistic taliban sympathizers. "

As opposed to our current Sec of State whom is already a women dealing with foreign affairs in the middle east..hello! LOL

Anyways, she will do fine at this job and would be a great choice. So would Richardson.

Joe-Wilmington, DE   November 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Plus she would be out of the country a lot. Good for 'ole Slick Willy, eh?

Christian   November 17th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

I love Hillary but this would be a mistake to make one of the most internationally despised women on earth the Secretary of State.
Kudos to whomever pointed out that she threatened to "totally obliterate" Iran. Secretary of State is a position that requires for people to like you.
Tap the pudgy Mexican boy for that one. He's a charmer.

Appoint Hillary as Attorney General Instead.

Vic   November 17th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I agree that Senator Clinton would be good for the position, but, Chuck Hagel would also be good.

Wait...What?   November 17th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I love how people think redistribution of wealth is a new thing. Thinking the Clinton years were more Socialist than the Bush years it makes me laugh and smile.

Sara Shamili   November 17th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I think it would be a terrible mistake of Obama, if he gives Hillary that job. She has the opposite foreign policy of Obama. Hillary has exactly the same ideas as Republicans and no wonder all of them are supporting her. And Wolf Blitzer is campaigning very hard for her as he did for Sarah Palin.
Please, Obama don't give her that great power. You would regret it bitterly.

Panther1   November 17th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Why do people keep mentioning Hillairy for 2012? Unless she abandons the Democratic Party, she won't be able to run until 2016.

Also, to those who don't support Barack Obama, you lost in a huge way. The majority of Americans want the country to go in a different direction. We had to put up with 8 years of disasterous governance because small minded morons thought that it was more important to elect a president who cared about "values" than someone who could actually do the job. NOTICE TO RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVES, NO, LET'S USE THE CORRECT WORDS, RIGHT WING CLOSE MINDED EXTREMISTS: Most people care about values, we just aren't into imposing our values on everyone else. Read the Constitution — this country was founded on the notion of freedom of belief and expression, yet you would suppress such freedoms and call those who don't agree with you "un-American." What a joke. Do what is good for you — crawl back into your insulated fantasy world and let thinking people fix this mess you got us into.

Here we are again with the question WHAT HILARY WONT???? We can not aford this narcisistic women taking stage again!!!!!!!!!! This is contraindication – when ever she involved in bysines all artention is on her and about her!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let be clear that she is such a distraction fron any real work be done.. She worked so hard during election but was only preocupied with her sel and her hurt feelings, entitelment, requests……THAT DOESN"T WOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Obama be wise. I know you belive you can handel her and you can BUT WHY WOULD YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need you to chose how you are going to go about your energy ………..stay focyse…………pick what yoou realy have to fight for and not all what you can…..Let her to Bill so they worn each other and not you…………we need you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carlos Jean-Gilles   November 17th, 2008 11:59 am ET

The beauty about HRC as Secretary of State is that she can pick up the phone at any time day or night and speak with Bill Clinton on foreign policy. One may like or dislike Bill Clinton. But one cannot deny that he is smart, astute, and knowledgeable. So, there you have it: no secretary of state ever has had the depth, breadth and intelligence of team Clinton. This is an outstanding choice, folks! It's not based on anything else other than what is best for the country. As to the argument that HRC does not satisfy the change agenda, tell me folks, When have we ever had both a man and a woman sharing the secretary of state job? This choice would be "freaking" brilliant, and it doesn't take the brain of a rocket scientist to see that. If HRC truly puts country first, she will not only accept the position, she will see that this platform makes her a shoe-in for president in 2016. All she has to do is make progress on the foreign policy front and improve her managerial skills, and she will be our first woman president. I'd bet my money on it!

TX_Women   November 17th, 2008 11:56 am ET

I admire Hilliary but she lives in the shadow of Bill Clinton. Bill-C needs to come clean with everything; if Hilliary is selected. Otherwise, she could end-up being a nightmare for the Obama Administraion. You have to think — why do so many Republicans want Hilliary as SOS???????

Be cautious and seek wisdom Obama in your pick for SOS.

The more knowledge a person attain the sooner he learnt you have leaders and followers you can^t have both.

susan   November 17th, 2008 11:56 am ET

The bottom line is Hillary Clinton should have been the Democratic nominee. The Superdelegates didn't want her. Besides, Obama is the least qualified person to be President of the United States in recent history. No wonder he is surrounding himself with Bill Clinton's administration. I think Hillary and Bill Clinton should stay completely out of Obama's Presidency. If he falls, he should fall hard and he should fall alone. Then he can preach his mantra of change. The Amercian people deserve who they have voted for much like they did when they voted for Geroge W Bush. If they should suffer, let them.

David   November 17th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Of course he's pushing for her to Secretary of State…think of how often she'd be out of the country!

Barry   November 17th, 2008 11:51 am ET

I tell you some of the comments on here, people just need to grow up.
What happned to all the talk of Unity or was that just more talk and no truth to it?

Obama would be lucky to have someone like Hillary on his team.
I hope of her sake she stays in the Senate as she can do more for the US and herself in the position.

Leigh   November 17th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Obama said he wants to redistribute the wealth to help everyone. Well I hope he begins with the redistribution of the wealth of Oprah, the Kennedys, all the people in Hollywood, and all the Democratic members of the House and the Senate. They were his biggest backers and supporters, so they should be the first to have their money spread around.

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   November 17th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Obama is smart in two ways
1) he's bringing back some key people who helped us clean up the last mess and give us an economic boom. I have no problem with that.
2) he's trying to bring in people with whom he disagreed because he knows he doesn't have ALL the answers and will want to get every angle before making decisions. Hillary has a unique perspective.
As well, she did get more than 18million votes in the primaries. That's about 30%, or a little more, than McCain's total. So, I'd like to think she's earned the right to be asked into the administration.
Oh, and let's not forget all those rallies she did for Obama.

He owes her and he knows it and is trying to repay her.
And, if everything works out, she'll be perfectly set up to get the nomination and win in 2016.

Yes, this is from a person who was furious at Clinton for months. Not so much for staying in, because I saw (especially in the end) how it maed Obama stronger as a candidate. Rather, for some of the things she said that were just flat out wrong.

But, again, she made up for it in rallying for him. So, I say go for it.

Ohio Citizen   November 17th, 2008 11:50 am ET

I will be surprised if she accepts the job. Her issues are on the domestic front. Does she forget about health care ? +

ndlily   November 17th, 2008 11:48 am ET

I just hope Obama knows what he is doing. i have read the theory that he would offer her a cabinet post just to get her out of the way. I suppose that is one way to look at it. I hate to see all the pressure on him to pick her, and I have to wonder where it is coming from. Part of me wonders if the Clinton faction hasn't blown this out of proportion just as a power play (let's push this guy, Obama, around).

As for all of you who say Hillary is smart and deserving of the position and Clinton was such a great president, yes, she is a great politician (not necessarily a compliment). But she is also ruthless, competitive, and used to putting herself far above the needs of those she represents. That's not exactly a team player. As for Clinton's reign as president, things were rosier then, but it takes a lot to affect the natural rhythms of the economy and the president can only do so much. I'm not saying that Bush is not culpable in this last little economic downturn. He was starting a war while not watching things at home, which is a dangerous recipe. But I am also saying Clinton isn't entirely responsible for the "good times," and he did his share to make the White House a joke (think Monica) around the world. And, to bring it all home, Hillary didn't even have the guts to stand up to him. Or once again, she put her political aspirations above being a role model to women and to her own daughter.

All in all, as I said, I really hope Obama knows what he is doing.

Truth Hurts   November 17th, 2008 11:47 am ET

There are only selfish reasons why Billy Clinton is campaigning for his wife to become SOS

It is too bad the media continues to push the idea that Slick Willy was a good president, cause he wasnt. His wife wouldnt be a good president either.

Gerry   November 17th, 2008 11:47 am ET

President-elect Obama is surely approaching the appointment of Secretary of State with the same caution and emphasis on consequences as he did during the election. Senator Clinton is a very good candidate for the position because she has all of the qualifications and carries little international ‘baggage.’ However, there is one major issue and that is President Clinton. President Clinton will need to reveal much about the financial dealings of his foundation as well as his personal income sources. During the primary campaign he did not do this. I think this is the only major problem in this appointment. I hope it works out as having Senator Clinton in the tent as opposed to outside the tent of Team Obama is wise choice for the Obama Administration.

Anna, ATL   November 17th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Oh geez, many people in Obamas campaign were former Clintonites.
Low tier, who decided that taking a gamble on the new guy could mean a climb up the ladder faster-thats why you see all these appointments from the Clinton days–they have been working with O since the beginning.

Where do you people think these NEW people you want are going to come from? We have serious problems right now that need to be solved.

As Joe said: no time for on the job training!

No Democrat has committed themselves more to the states, country and world they have served than the Clintons in the past thirty years.

You want solutions? Hire competence!
the best living example of that these days are they that served the Clintons.

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   November 17th, 2008 11:46 am ET

I think Hillary as Secretary of Sate is an inspired idea, which tells us a lot about Obama's temperament. Even though she's a great advocate for Obama's (and her) policies in Congress, any Democrat would be and in the Senate, she'll still be the junior senator from New York and a long way from Senate Leadership. She's respected around the world and is the kind of intelligent force we need in this position. That's not to take anything away from Richardson or Kerry because they're capable, too. But I think we need something more than just capable. We need energy in all of these high-level positions,an energy which screams change. And this does this for me.

justobserve   November 17th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Of course Bill would say that: it's like him in a candy store. He had used his status as an ex-president to earn million without shame, he will have more power with a wife in the cabinet. It's just like those Banana Republic, say the Marcos, when his wife stood for presidency, or Evita of Argentina.

Sylvia   November 17th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Why is Bill Clinton involved in every step that his wife is going to make. I think he just needs to be quiet and let his wife and Obama work this out. Clinton is so "in your face" and it's beginning to be annoying. I hope Obama sees this.

Annie, Atlanta   November 17th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Either Senator Clinton or Governor Richardson would represent us well on the world stage.

Obama supporter #2   November 17th, 2008 11:45 am ET

All week end we have been hearing about Hillary as SoS. Please Obama make your decisions on your cabinet positions so the MSM can STFU about it. They (the MSM/GOP) are gonna scrutinize if you make the "wrong or right" decisions anyway.

Willa   November 17th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, John Kerry….all very well qualified. If Hillary gets the job however, the Obama team will definitely become another Clinton team, and their NAFTA agenda etc. etc. . Let's hope this time at least, that any new trade agreements will be negotiated with some semblance of intelligence, responsibility and common sense. If we keep 'giving away the store' to other countries, US will continue to bleed jobs and there will be more dire consequences for our already teetering economy.

ALG   November 17th, 2008 11:44 am ET

If Obama picks Richardson over her then my inital thoughts of him will be confirmed. When Richardson stabbed >Hillary in the back, I said then that something must have been promised to him. Hillary is by far superior to Richardson.

Debbie   November 17th, 2008 11:43 am ET

I voted for Obama but I think Clinton would be a perfect Secretary of State. "Go for it Obama".

Scott   November 17th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Senator Clinton just needs to take the job, and get to work on improving US relations around the globe, while Obama is tacking the economic mess here at home!

Robert   November 17th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Hillary should have been the nominee.

Bob, MS   November 17th, 2008 11:41 am ET

I don't think Hillary would be loyal. But who knows, she could surprise us all. If she doesn't put herself first for once in her life, she would do a good job. If she takes the position to boost her foreign creds in order to run against him in 2012, she'll be the snake that everyone says she is.

Charlie   November 17th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Obama promised change; change to "old Washington" with the Clinton administration?
I didn't vote Obama to get the Clinton's back; I voted Obama for real change, with new people.
Obama fooled everybody with his so called "change".

C, Ca   November 17th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Bill, shut up and stay out of Hillary's career. You played a big part in her losing the nomination – don't blow this for her too.

Billy J , TX-   November 17th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Hillary would be fantastic. Strong, tough, smart and what a poke in the eye to the misogynistic taliban sympathizers.

Say what you want, but the Clintons don't play and the whole world knows that. When she stops smiling and looks right into the eyes of a leader or negotiator from another country (especially a potential threat to America) and tells them what is what, they will KNOW it is not a threat, it is a promise. But she is also a good enough soldier to ONLY deliver the messages she has been told to.

On the other hand, if that leader were to raise his hand too fast to brush their hair back or something, Bill Richardson would flinch and then apologize. I can't believe he is that good of a negotiator. It certainly doesn't show in speeches, debates, or interviews. He always looks constipated, confused and apologetic when he hasn't done anything to apologize for.

ME IN FL   November 17th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Choosing Hillary for SOS will not be a great choice, it will be an excellent choice!!!!!! She has the experience and the guts to tackle the job.

Obama needs to surround himself with people that have knowledge and experience and so far all cabinet members that he is choosing are from the Clinton's days, meaning they have been there and done that!!!!!

Keep it going Obama!! You are in the right path for the CHANGE that the American people need!!!

jim   November 17th, 2008 11:39 am ET

I find this an odd situation. Bill Richardson endorse Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton, now turn around and suggest Hillary instead of Richardson is wrong.

rachel   November 17th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Yes she would be good at the job now billy hush up

mike from New York   November 17th, 2008 11:38 am ET

She seems to be doing everything she can to bail on her "commitment" to the state to which she "moved" to be our Senator.

Debby58   November 17th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Hillary Clinton would be a bad choice because she already alienated many people around the world with her objection to having dialogs with some foreign countries which are adversarial to US and with her treats to "obliterate" Iran. In addition her vote supporting Iraq War is very well known all around the world. These facts would ruin the new foreign policy image Obama is trying to construct. I think Richardson would be a great choice since he has extensive experience in international relations without the drawbacks of Clinton's stance.

FactCheck   November 17th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Wow you Republican are such fools. Why wouldn't Obama give the job to the best qualified candidate available (i.e. HRC) even if it means that she is part of Washington establishment? Whom would you he rather offer the position to… Sarah "I can still see Russia from my house" Palin? What you Pugs never seem to realize is that this is not a game and the future of our nation is at stake. After the last 8 years of such nonsense, one would think that you'd have a little more common sense about this.

Tired   November 17th, 2008 11:36 am ET

I think it is very interesting that Obama can win the election. Not just win, He gave him an old fashion beat down, and most of America is behind him. Hillary should be honored that he is evening considering her, because he can do better. I like her I think she has the spunk for the job. We all need to pull together and support our country, and leave the mess along.

mary, colorado springs, co   November 17th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Hillary is an excellent choice for Secretary of State. President Obama is making highly intelligent choices — whether Democrat or Republican — in an attempt to heal the devisiveness currently existing between the two parties. By the time he is through picking his staff, the government will be running with a first-rate group of people, one that should bring the United States back to its pre-Bush status as the leader of the world.

ANGIE   November 17th, 2008 11:35 am ET

I say no way she doesnt have Foreign policy Experience,And she voted yes to the war in Iraq and Obama was against the war, I think he should consider Wesley clark or Chuck Hagel not Hillary!

tedious898   November 17th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Any idiot that would say "some change" if Obama picks Clintonites, simply needs to see about graduating pre-school before logging on. How can a new president change the outlook for the country with people who have no idea the inner workings of Washington?

Geesh….you know who you are! Shut up and watch grown folks with brains do this.

Tony   November 17th, 2008 11:33 am ET

I also agree with some earlier post here. Bill, you did some great things for this country. Honestly the past 8 years have made me miss you a great deal in the Oval Office. With that said we love you dearly but for the sake of your wife's career…. would you please shut up? If you go around touting her, then people are going to think she is trying to force her way into a job which any rational person knows isn't true. However we have our lesser minds walking around and all it will take is negative publicity surrounding this VERY important appointment to FORCE Obama to look elsewhere. The position of Secretary of State is in a fragile condition thanks to the foreign policies of GWB. So this position needs to be filled by someone who has the confidence of not just the President but the American people and the world. Bill don't screw this up for her with your mouth.

Jon   November 17th, 2008 11:33 am ET

how soon we forget the lies and hatred that hillary spread during the primary campaign…..sniper fire, reverend wright, crying in NH, personal attacks on Obama……she cant even work with her own party let alone bipartisan attempts.

Lesley, Lighthouse Point   November 17th, 2008 11:33 am ET

The way that the Barack Obama is putting together this power team of leadership is impressive. Hilary Clinton would make an extremely good Sec. of State. This is just one indicator that we made the correct choice.

Borat   November 17th, 2008 11:33 am ET

You know why I agree with Obama because the Right WING IS GOING NUTS ABOUT IT . SO THAT TELLS ME SHE IS THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB !

Alexander   November 17th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Hillary would be a good choice, but I agree with others comments. Barack has to pick qualified people who are not part of the Washington Elite, or ex-Clinton Cabinet members. Otherwise it is change, but change of party and not REAL change.

This is very frustrating seeing the same faces as the Clinton era. I would dispute that Clinton's era was great as some people posted. Sure Bill had a rough start and a good 1st term, but his second was mediocre.

The question is, do we pick experience and risk Washington Insiders to do business as usual, or do we gamble and get some new blood with new ideas? Which is the real driver of change….and which will suit the country better. Tough decisions…

Hillary Clinton will make an excellent Secretary of State. I truly hope she accepts the position!

Kelly   November 17th, 2008 11:31 am ET

NO WAY!!! Obama should get new people. Everyone knows the Clinton's are part of that good ole boy network. Where is Wesley Clark in all of this? No way should Hilary be a part of this administration.

Polkovnik   November 17th, 2008 11:29 am ET

This concept makes no sense, not for Clinton and not for Obama.

The very able Clinton, who wields power and influence in the Senate far beyond her seniority, needs to stay there. She can help the party and the Administration infinitely more where she is. She will also help herself, because the Senate is a much better launching pad for further advancement (if I'm not mistaken, the last SecState to ascend to the Presidency was John Quincy Adams).

From Obama's and our country's standpoint, what is needed in a SecState is a consummate foreign affairs pro, someone who has made his or her bones on the field of diplomatic battle and is recognized as such by friend and foe alike. Dick Holbrooke and Bill Richardson come immediately to mind, and there are a number of others. Clinton is not in that company; her long suit is on the domestic side. (And really, watching someone else do the job isn't "experience").

Come on, folks, this boomlet (which I strongly suspect is a pure media artifact) is good for nobody. Let's get on with the cabinet-building job and leave Clinton, a great Democratic Senator, where she can do the most good. (Next majority leader, maybe?

Bill CLinton needs to stop campaigning for his wife to be Secretary of State. They are so pushy. Why can't they just let things be. She might get it without him interferring. That's why she probably wasn't selected for VP. They are to pushy. Just get out of the way Bill. Be quiet and stay out of the lime light, and maybe she will get it. Who said she campaigned for the job? Why would you bring that up to put in peoples minds.

kcmookie   November 17th, 2008 11:28 am ET

I would say all the rabble-raising going on by PUMA's on here should be all he needs to know about what he will be dealing with if he gives any position to a Clinton. You all act as if Hillary deserves something and should be able to demand it, disgusting. Walk away from her and her following and let them fade back into the nothingness they belong in. I can enjoy a LONG respite from dealing with Clinton followers at least until Chelsea comes of age, and then I am sure I will have to listen to it all over again. Go AWAY, please.

Washington Observer   November 17th, 2008 11:27 am ET

And this from a totally unbiased source. But, on this one I must agree with the former President. A team with Barack and Hillary working together would be a very strong team – and this union also will help unite Americans in their foreign policy initiatives. Now, instead of Obama going to speak with Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela without pre conditions, he can send Hillary —– a powerful team indeed

Virginia   November 17th, 2008 11:26 am ET

And who really cares what Bill thinks–it ain't his call to make! I think it would be a huge mistake, but then maybe not. I didn't vote for Obama, so anything he does to goof up is fine with me….

TO CLINTONFRINGER:

Neither my family members in the military nor myself voted for Sen Obama because we thought he will bring all the troops home. We voted for him because he is knowledgable, wise and most importantly cares about keeping our troops out of harm's way by not fighting dumb wars.

We believe that Sen Obama will create a war out of lies and deceit like Bush, Cheney and their fellow war criminals.

Willie Davis   November 17th, 2008 11:24 am ET

I hope Bill Richardson or John Kerry get to be the Secretary of

another Chief of Staff someone who will not do a lot of leaking

reconsider this appointment. I know you mean well.
Good Luck and God bless all of you!

david dial   November 17th, 2008 11:19 am ET

I'm looking at this from a poker players perspective. Obama has made the final table but has been dealt mediocre hole cards for the first hand and doesn't have a huge stack of chips to bully other players with. The stacks against him… two wars, a staggering economy, a diminished position on the world stage are formidable and he knows he has to establish his credentials early or those stacks will be bullying him for the rest of the game. Then he is dealt Hillary on the flop. He has the first bet and has to decide…fold, limp or raise? All the bets behind him will have to make their decisions based on that decision.

Hillary seems to bring two great weaknesses to his hand. First, her administrative and leadership skills aren't top notch…consider her attempts to shepherd health care through congress during Bill's administration and, more recently, her incredibly mismanaged campaign. Second, she is extremely competitive and, when on the losing side of a fight is susceptable to saying and doing things that do not serve her well in the long run. Those things could make his hand unplayable.

But she has strengths. She is extremely competitive. She will want to win arguments on policy with her boss, in this case President Obama. That is a good thing. She will force him to think long and hard about their differences of opinion. She is also a very forceful, intelligent human being and is perceived as such by leaders around the world. She makes him look stronger and he will be able to negotiate (bet) from a position of great strength.

Last, but certainly not least, there is Bill. He is the wild card in all this. Being dealt Hillary on the flop Barack can be pretty sure that no matter what the turn brings he has Bill on the river if he needs him. That, for a good poker player, is like knowing after the flop that, while you don't already have the nuts you have a lot of outs to get there with.

If I were him, I think I'd like having those two cards in my hand. I'd know it was still a gamble, but that's the nature of the game. It's not just hold 'em or fold 'em. I'd raise.

ziadroa   November 17th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Obama is creatinig a strong, experienced team. Hillary would be an excellent SOS.

Fred   November 17th, 2008 11:17 am ET

I think it is funny how everyone is pushing for Hillary to be secretary of state. While she would be a good fit. Just think of what republicans would say,"hey he said he was going to change washington, yet he has the same people that have been in washington for a long time." Where is the change he promised? just think about that. Hillary is a good candidate but she would be just another punchline for republicans who would claim, Barack Obama promised us change but we get more of the same washington elite.

Kelly   November 17th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Hillary would be a Fantastic Sec of State. She is very tactful and can be persuasive. Also, she can be forceful and stern if it's necessary.
She appears to have good insight and could read -betweeen- the- lines of foreign diplomats. She would not be fooled by their outward signs of good will. She would look after America's interests very well.

Hillary would be a wonderful Secretary of State. Obama needs experienced people like her surrounding him in his cabinet. Notice who he's been picking. He is proving to have sound judgment. I didn't vote for him, but I like what I see so far—he is reaching out to those he thinks would be best for these positions, and best for the country and putting his own ego aside.

Helen   November 17th, 2008 11:14 am ET

Chuck,

You are really a small minded person. Let the past be the past. We need to look to the future so your snide remarks about Bill Clinton shows stupidity, ignorance and just plain nasty. I am sure you have made mistakes in your life, we all do, so why don't you just crawl back into your little hole and let the intelligent people get on with trying to get this country out of the mess it's in.

Vasilios Birlidis   November 17th, 2008 11:13 am ET

Clinton is the perfect choice to unite that party and also place someone who would make an excellent S of S.

However, Bill Richardson would be the worst. Considering his actions during the primary, to someone who he owes a tremendous amount to, shows me that loyalty isn't a trait he holds dearly. It's not the point that he didn't support Clinton. His attacks were so vicious that you couldn't walk away without thinking that he has a major character problem.

Abraham Lincoln who I consider to be one of the greatest presidents did the same thing.

Inviting those people into his administration is a huge mistake that will slow down the change America voted for. We heard the Republican attacks and arguments for two years and voted against them. The Republican LOST the election, and in a lopsided fashion. They need to act like that is so and stop preparing to say "no" to what America has resoundingly said "YES" to. Obama doesn't need his political enemies inside his administration and he doesn't need to ask their permission to do what American has told him we want done.

Many of these comments I do not agree with. Obama has said he wants to promote the best people for the job. OK. This has nothing to do with change. After all anything different from Bush/Chaney is welcome change anyway. You have to promote the best people for the job. This does not mean that you go to the nearest unemployment line and pick somebody just to change things. You've got to have quality and people who know what they are doing. The only way to know this job is by having served in Washington. So to disparage any choice because they are in government is counterproductive. We do not want Joe the Plumber.
I'm so proud. I didn't read the name Sarah Palin once in this blog.

She sure is more qualified than Bill Richardson!!!

Interesting how Obama, who vociferously campaigned against the Washington 'insiders' and against 'old style politics' is filling his Cabinet with Clinton insiders who are also Washington insiders. My sense is that as President he will be little more than a very articulate and eloquent mouthpiece for the partisan democratic party and the very special interests he condemned. All we have done is switch one set of idelogues for another. How does that saying go? You can fool some of the people some of the time…….

As for the comment that in 2012 Hillary will be too old to run for President…are you thinking she would consider running as a Republican? I'm fairly certain Barack Obama is running for President in 2012 on the Democratic ticket. I'm also sick of people degrading the youth of the nation for finally getting more involved in the political process, and I don't think anyone has been indicating that 'only the young have good ideas'.

Pat in IL   November 17th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I think that Hillary will do a very good job of whatever she chooses to do. Those who don't like her just because she's married to Bill, or because she "wears boring pantsuits", or whatever, are just being silly – or worse – not discerning about who is best qualified for what job. Also, we don't know everything. Barack Obama and his advisors are much more savvy about what is needed for SOS, what the job really entails, etc., than we are, so it is definitely his decision to make and we should respect that.

Loyal Dem in Paris   November 17th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I liked Hillary until the primaries, where I think she showed her true character (do anything to get power). I still like her (not as much as Obama), and love Bill Clinton, but aren't her talents better served as Secretary of HHS? I think SoS is not her specialty, her policies are not in line with Obama, and it puts her too much in the limelight – especially for someone as power hungry as she is.

Bill, I love ya, but you need to step aside and let Obama make his own decisions without pressure from his supporters. He knows what is best.

I for one hope that he chooses Richardson, but whomever he decides to choose, I am certain it will be for the good of the country.

Linda   November 17th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I didn't vote for Hillary Clinton in the Primary. Her scorched earth campaign truly turned me away (and many others) from supporting her as the Democratic nominee. However, I think that she would be a fine Secretary of State; or perhaps Richard Holbrooke. I am not too sold on Kerry for that specific Cabinet position.

President Elect Obama seems like he is building a strong coalition from both parties to best put this country forward. But I don’t think that McCain should be chosen as Secretary of Defense or National Security. His erratic temperament could prove to be dangerous in such a position.

Debra   November 17th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Bill Richardson is all about spotlight. This is not who we need in any position unless it is press secretary.

Hillary for SOS   November 17th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Bill Clinton had to make the record straight that it was Obama who called her. He is still fighting this ego thing. Regardless, I agree with most posters it will be a great move for Hillary be on the World stage. The Country needs her.

chuck   November 17th, 2008 10:33 am ET

When the CAT is AWAY the mouse will PLAY. I hope Billy"s fitness is good because there will be lots of young, middle, and old ducks quacking in the pond for some TLC.

Proud to be American   November 17th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Hillary would do a good job at whatever serving our country however, I think she would do best as Secretary of Health…. this way she and Kennedy can serious get our health care up to par.

pam Eugene OR   November 17th, 2008 10:33 am ET

right Bill. You did it out of the kindness of your hearts! Of course Bill and Hill want something and the want something big, like Sec of State.
Please do not put the Clintons' back in power Barack. Keep the out of the Federal government. I voted for Obama and NOT Clinton!

Garry   November 17th, 2008 10:33 am ET

I think she would be excellant in this position, she knows how to be tough and she knows how to listen and understand.
Too old to run in 2012? Please, she will be the most excellant choice for 2012.
I think Obama has a long road ahead of him, but he needs to focus on jobs, health care and EQUAL RIGHTS!!

Bridget   November 17th, 2008 10:32 am ET

Wow! Th Clinton Dynasty is still fighting for a Royal seat in the United States of America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

August 26, 2008 the Democratic Party gave Chelsea a prime spot on CNN coverage for the media world yet Former President Carter did not have any impotant coverage time!!!!!!!!!

Mickey   November 17th, 2008 10:32 am ET

He's the problem – with Hillary, you get Bill. I was a supporter of his, but lately he's a loose cannon. Can't he just retire?

Don   November 17th, 2008 10:31 am ET

Wow how shallow some of you people are. Here your still hung up on Hillary. She and her husband did everything they could to undermine Obama. They said cruel things about him and yet you think she is worthy of the Secretary of State post? Give me a break and please its too early in the morning for you to be smoking so much. Let your head clear and then make a valid comment that has more substance than her being worthy of the post.

Marie banderas   November 17th, 2008 10:31 am ET

BIG conflict of interests between Hillary and Obama..maybe he just simply wanted to ask her "opinion' on a few things ! She is definately NOT the right person for SOS…

r sisk, nevada   November 17th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Can you imagine, Obama, Biden, Clinton in the same administration. What a powerful team!!!!!

KLK   November 17th, 2008 10:30 am ET

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dole   November 17th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Hillary would make a good Senator of New York

sharon   November 17th, 2008 10:29 am ET

Hillary would be the most fabulous choice for Secretary of State – eminently qualified and would send a real signal to the rest of the world to have such a high profile person as Secretary. It also speaks volumes about what Obama is all about – putting his ego and any petty squabbling between the two of them aside to pick THE best person for the position. Kerry or Richardson??? They would each be a disaster

Heidi   November 17th, 2008 10:29 am ET

I think Sen.Clinton would make an excellent choice and would help unite the party. I read somwhere that Powell only wanted a position having to do with education.

Debra   November 17th, 2008 10:29 am ET

Clinton would be a great choice. Everyone said that Rohn would be a bad choice too but Obama still picked him. I wish everyone would get over themselves. Obama is choosing who he wants in those positions – not who you want. You would have America slammed into a depression with our enemies attacking us in our own country. Shut up! Get real! Your fantasy that Obama's message of change meant no old Washington is unrealistic. His change is more in tune to getting Bush out and getting Washington, and the nation, working again. He needs the best people out there to get that done.

Clinton Fringer   November 17th, 2008 10:28 am ET

MY question is………..do you think all of the young troops and their familes have realized their "obama will bring my baby home" vote was wasted? Have they figured out that he will not only NOT bring them home but will send them to Afganistan instead AND increase numbers to more than we have deployed now. Wonder how he will find so many people to send? Think that's what he meant by we must all work together? Where are all the anti- war hippies or celebrities out there protesting that?

Carlsbadkangaroo   November 17th, 2008 10:27 am ET

Hillary, tell Obama to stick it. He didn't want you on his ticket so let him get some other inexperienced idiot like himself for Secy of State.

Notice how he wants to surround himself with EXPERIENCED people to tell him what to do so he can get re-elected!

Bob   November 17th, 2008 10:27 am ET

She would be a most excellent choice. RIchardson or Kerry, are you kidding?

thomas   November 17th, 2008 10:27 am ET

Secretary of State is fourth in the Presidential line of succession, but if she remains in the Senate and becomes President Pro Tempore, she would become third in line behind the Vice President and the Speaker of the House.

Scott NYC Independent   November 17th, 2008 10:27 am ET

How could Hilary ever be a great Secretary of State – she still believes she is the most current viable candidate for President. If she became Sec. Of State she would effectively remove herself from a 2012 race. Besides she is not controllable.

Mary Renter   November 17th, 2008 10:26 am ET

Obama won because he promised change, yet he is surrounding himself with many people from the Clinton Administration – thats not change, its more of the same that didn't work – what a joke, he's all smoke and mirrors, and totally inept to lead even a group of Boy Scouts!
Heaven help us all.

"Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."

— Sun-tzu

Chinese general & military strategist (~400 BC)

Sound advice, Senator Obama. Keep Hillary as close to you as possible.

If you let her "free range" in the Senate, she will pick apart your Presidency, block your legislative initaivies, and generally position herself for a 2012 run.

bruja   November 17th, 2008 10:26 am ET

Great choice! Obama is a VERY smart man: Keep your enemies close…. Mrs. Clinton is more damaging in the senate…

CHERYL   November 17th, 2008 10:26 am ET

Hillary would be great in this position because she has a lot of experience in this area.
Hillary will be the one to decide if she takes it or not, She may prefer to stay where she is.
I will support her either way because she is a very smart woman who runs her own show.
It would be great to have her be part of Obama's administration in any capacity.

Elizabeth Martin   November 17th, 2008 10:26 am ET

I agree strongly with Jax of Florida, that Hillary would do much more good as Sec. of Health 7 Human Servies, give her strong focus on health care reform.

Bill Richardson could do far more good in the position of Secretary of State.

kim   November 17th, 2008 10:26 am ET

I think she is a BAD CHOICE. Maybe she'll start talkin bout whizzing imaginative bullets again during a policy talk. that is what we need. her imagination in that post

darryl from st. louis   November 17th, 2008 10:26 am ET

Let the man get in office and get a cabnet together before all the negitive remarks surface she hasn't given a answer yet. The answer will be no she is bitter. Really

Tafari   November 17th, 2008 10:25 am ET

Bill, why not shut up. You talked enough during the primaries.

This Is Crazy   November 17th, 2008 10:25 am ET

She'd be trouble, because trouble follows the Clintons. I like Barack and wish him well, but if he choosing Clinton so be it. I don't want to hear, read, or see all the drama she will bring to the table. She will be a huge mistake and Barack will find that out.

Hillary and Bill are the most selfish people on the face of the earth and starting a "change" administration with the two of them is a mistake.

Hillary is NOT Bill. She is her own person. Get over it!

Nick, Rochester, NY   November 17th, 2008 10:23 am ET

Great news about Senator Clinton! When the proverbial phone call comes in to the White House at 3:00 AM, the prerecorded message will say:

"We are sorry, the president is asleep right now dreaming of a better tomorrow. If this is a real emergency please dial 1-800-HILLARY"

Steve - Minneapolis   November 17th, 2008 10:23 am ET

This is a much better match than VP. I think a lot of us have been hoping for this arrangement all along.

To mm: Get over it. The best way to keep someone on track with you is to have them work with/for you. Barack can manage the situation and who could be more qualified and internationally respected than Hillary?

just a thought   November 17th, 2008 10:23 am ET

there have been so much hate and lies during this election, it's hard to know who can be trusted, let's just hope whom ever is chosen will be honest and sincere and have all america's best interest at heart.

Mary   November 17th, 2008 10:22 am ET

Here we go again bashing Hillary. This woman is so intelligent and great that even common non-government people are scared of her

jeff in seattle   November 17th, 2008 10:22 am ET

Why not choose someone that actually has foreign policy experience? Entertaining the wives of heads of state does not qualify you to be Secretary of State. Hillary spent a lot of effort exaggerating her experience in foreign affairs. Remember the sniper incident? But the truth is that she really has little to none. She would be better suited as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

MR G   November 17th, 2008 10:22 am ET

Wake up America, we have to talk to all country's to resolve issues and some of these are Muslim / Islamic lead. The Muslim's don't have much regard for women in their culture. Will they give the time of day to a women Secretary of State?

Val from Philadelphia   November 17th, 2008 10:21 am ET

Bill will do and say anything to make his wife busier and get her out of the country more often.
I like Hillary, but this administration needs new blood….new life.
The Clintons are the past. And they have too many skeletons and too much closet space.

Dilligaf   November 17th, 2008 10:20 am ET

Bill would be a tremendous to her! He's very good at foreign affairs. What a despicable couple to have travelling the world representing our country.

ursula   November 17th, 2008 10:19 am ET

whine whine whine

Its President elect Obamas decision… not ours. Quit whining about everything and just accept everything for what it is!

If Hillary accepts the position, I'm sure she will do great at it. If she doesn't, she's a great senator.

Everyone needs to stop the drama!

FLewis   November 17th, 2008 10:18 am ET

I don't think Hillary is the right person for this job. Bill Clinton will be trying to run the show. I think Obama should pick Bill Richardson. Bill is a nicer person and I think people around the world respects him more then they do Hillary.
Colin Powell is also a great choice.
What is Obama thinking???
Obama needs to find another position for Hillary. Like taking care of the Obama's dog at the White House.

ran   November 17th, 2008 10:18 am ET

I would like Bill Richarson for SOS. I believe Clinton would do better in the Senate. Also Chuck Hagal or Colon Powel for SOD. Bill clinton like in the primary race would be a distraction not a help.

Scott   November 17th, 2008 10:14 am ET

I think Hillary should get the Secretary of State position and Bill should be appointed to her Senate seat. Maybe it's political incest, but I can't think of two smarter or more qualified people.
Bill Richardson strikes me as nothing more than an Obama sycophant.

Rachelraye49 - MD   November 17th, 2008 10:14 am ET

Jano 1234

Really do you think Obama needs you behind him now? Why weren't you behind in the election because he won the nominee and not Hillary. So you defected to the losing team. Let Obama do one think that you don't like as in not choosing her for Secretary of State and here you go again not being in his corner. You need to check your hearts at the door.

mm   November 17th, 2008 10:13 am ET

HOW IS THIS CHANGE ??

I AM DISSAPOINTED IF HE CHOOSES HER, NOT ONLY WILL SHE UNDERMIND HIM TOTALLY BUT SHE WILL MAKE SURE OBAMA GETS NOTHING DONE

NO BILL
NO HILLARY
SORRY CHANGE MEANS CHANGE

Tabby   November 17th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Hillary would make a great sec. of state , nice choice by Obama i wonder what Bill Clinton will do once she is away on foreign missions , did we forget Monica Lewinski , good old 90's … i miss those days i bet Bill doesn't.

Obama Refuses to Support Gay Rights   November 17th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Obama said everyone is welcome under his tent and that he's the unity President.

Then why is he not supporting gay rights? He didn't support gay rights in the Calif. Proposition and he's not supporting gays as they march across the country demanding their rights.

Are only blacks entitled to their rights? Is this guy just another slick politician not supporting gay rights because blacks voted 70-30 to oppress gays?

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   November 17th, 2008 10:09 am ET

and can you say CONFLICT OF INTEREST with the many multinational Clinton projects?

NO HILLARY
NO BILL

Jeff - Jax, FL   November 17th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I think she'd do a better job as Secretary of Health and Human Services, given her drive to help with health care reform.

But we'll see what happens.

random comment   November 17th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I think Hillary would do well, but I wonder if Clinton Foundation donations would represent a conflict of interest, since many donors are foreign nationals.

Jan   November 17th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I hope Hillary won't take this position. This President elect & his wife are so arrogant. Hillary & Bill are so humbel, Hillary deserves better.

longhorns4life   November 17th, 2008 10:08 am ET

if he offers Hillary the job, that would be about as logical as offering McCain the Secretary of Defense job when he meets with him today. While H. Clinton and Obama's domestic policies are quite similar, their foreign policies are not as compatible. Add to the the rampant potential for conflict of interest with all of B. Clinton's dealings and it is a recipe for disaster. She should remain in the Senate or take a different cabinet position like Health and Human Services to focus on Health Care Reform. She is sorely needed there and would be much more effective.

Richardson? NO.   November 17th, 2008 10:08 am ET

I lived in New Mexico. Bill Richardson is a joke.

xys   November 17th, 2008 10:07 am ET

She would be a most excellent choice for secretary of state!

NO   November 17th, 2008 10:07 am ET

I hate that they recycle Washington jobs. If she's selected I don't know how our foreign policy is going to change. It would pretty much be the same as Pres. Clinton's. I have a fear that if she's Secretary of State, it will be the same old cookie-cutter foreign policy.

Dexter Skagway   November 17th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Change means more of the same. My expectations for the Obama years have imploded. We just swing like a pendulum between the same parties, changing nothing but which group of insider greedheads get to oink and glut at the trough

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   November 17th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Bill Clinton thinks his wife would be great for the job? I think my wife would be great as Secretary of State too guys, how do I get her on the shortlist?

LIP   November 17th, 2008 10:07 am ET

There seems to be some conflict of interest with Bill and a particular organization of his where Hillary sits on the board. Could someone expand on this?

Denise P Quinton   November 17th, 2008 10:05 am ET

It would be in the best interest of our country if OBAMA was concerned and caring enough about the status of our beloved country to choose a qualified, exemplary, women who has such grace and intelligence for this position.
If should have been the other way around but at least Obama is smart enough to realize he does not have the knowledge for this position, and needs real help.

demwit   November 17th, 2008 10:05 am ET

But, but, what has happened to Obama's tough job application?

Or is hangin with known felons OK in Obama world? Oh…, of course it is, Obama can't expect more than he has given himself.., or can he??

Michael   November 17th, 2008 10:05 am ET

You people are UNBELIEVABLE. Lay off the Clinton's already! Bill was THE MOST popular and ONLY 2 term Democratic President since FDR.

bill, alabama   November 17th, 2008 10:05 am ET

With her knowing world leaders already and their fondness for her husband, Hilary woud make a great choice for secretary of state.

I would like to see Colin Powell for secretary of defense also.

Catholic-mom-4-OBAMA   November 17th, 2008 10:04 am ET

@ SUSIE….. you are so right! Thanks for your comment! One of the FIRST things President Obama should do is cancel all of our FOREIGN AID! The money is desperately needed at home!

David, Silver Spring, MD   November 17th, 2008 10:03 am ET

Every time Bill talks about his wife and Obama I get the feeling he just can't accept that Obama won over Hillary fair and square. Does the country, do other countries around the globe, really need this lack of certainty about who Hillary would be working for as SoS?

Richardson is a much better choice. He doesn't take the spotlight off Obama, he has great diplomatic credentials, and he opens doors throughout the Western Hemisphere that Clinton does not. If we're going to be reevaluating our relationship with Cuba or working to counter the influence of Hugo Chavez in the region, I'd much rather have someone there who speaks the language.

jt hall   November 17th, 2008 10:03 am ET

He just can't shut up – that's why hillary should not be secretary of state… what a disaster… voices of this administration would come from every corner of D.C.

Dorothy in NC   November 17th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I was a great Bill Clinton supporter when he was President but now is the time for him to step down out of the limelight. I think Hillary would make a wonderful SOS but Bill should have learned from the campaign that he really hurts her credibility by always being in the media scrutinizing hers and Obamas every move.

Steve, Madison WI   November 17th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I think Hillary would be a good choice. But to correct you Bill, you did not campaign hard for Obama – Hillary did, you did not. As one of your past ardent supporters, I am highly disappointed in your egomaniacal behavior since leaving office. So Bill, leave the future to Obama and Hillary and save whatever legacy you have.

Getting It Right   November 17th, 2008 10:03 am ET

Bill is a top-notch intelligent leader, but he is so old school with the games he plays – Bill: Work on the CGI and stay out politics. You got your money, so let Hillary do what she does best; she is just as intelligent (if not more so) than you and she needs to stand on her own – we all love her.

Karen - Proud of This Country   November 17th, 2008 10:02 am ET

I say ok to Madam Secretary Clinton. I like the idea of Senator Clinton being in the cabinet… Make this happened Obama.

RealityKing   November 17th, 2008 10:02 am ET

So much for foriegn experience having ANYTHING to do with ones abilities to fill a government job…

Doug R.   November 17th, 2008 10:01 am ET

…and Bill can fill her vacant Senate position.

therealist   November 17th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Except that, the only foriegn experience Hillary had was a lie.., something about dodging sniper fire in Bosina. But hey.., maybe she can hire Sarah Palinn as an advisor..

Michael watching from Canada   November 17th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Yes, Hillary has earned a great deal of respect around the world. She would make a very good SoS. But, the Clintons better be very careful that there will be absolutely no conflicts of interest between Hillary being SoS and Bill Clinton's global initiatives.

And again, I really hope America is patient with their new President-elect. It is going to take time and a major change to some of the altruistic habits America has gotten used to.

Tom T.   November 17th, 2008 10:00 am ET

By stepping in to remind everyone that with Hillary we get Bill, I suspect that Bill has now torpedoed his wife's nomination.

bitter_in_pa   November 17th, 2008 9:59 am ET

So much for change. If Obama picks her its a sellout to the power brokers.

lou, Mississippi   November 17th, 2008 9:59 am ET

NO WAY! Governor Richardson deserves that appointment. President-elect should go with the most qualified person. I would whether him stay with Dr. Condi Rice instead of Hillary Clinton.

Andrew   November 17th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Hey Guys how about that Sarah Palin book deal? 7 to 8 millions, are you kidding? Joe the plumber book? All those are no Barack Obama

Praetorian   November 17th, 2008 9:58 am ET

I can see it now—world impact!!!

Hillary–Secretary of State, U.S.

Bill–General Secretary, U.N.

What power team.

Dennis   November 17th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State would be like throwing gasoline on a fire. Bill Richardson would be a much better choice.

Dixie AZ   November 17th, 2008 9:58 am ET

If Obama asks and if Hillary accepts, I hope we won't be getting 2 Clintons for the price of one. I have alot of faith in Hillary, but don't have much respect for Bill Clinton.

Alan Jarman   November 17th, 2008 9:58 am ET

I wish the media stops trying to push Hillary on Obama, let him make his own decisions. If she wasn't so pushy, she would have been the VP. We didn't like it before, so why would we like it now, We know she only did what she did for Obama to salvage her political career, but Hillary only cares about Hillary

NuDeal   November 17th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Any opportunity that the President-elect has to put the best talent around him is a good move. I just hope they are ready for politics that is service oriented and not politics that are surface oriented.

AL   November 17th, 2008 9:56 am ET

I think she would be a great choice..

S.   November 17th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Hillary Clinton is a well respected, intelligent senator. I cannot think of anyone better than her to be the next Secretary of State. I have always thought Fareed Zakaria would be a great Secretary of State as well. I am thirlled with the way Obama has been conducting his business so far – meeting with Sen. Clinton, meeting with Sen. McCain!

Angie-OHIO   November 17th, 2008 9:55 am ET

And so do we Mr President. I hope she is our next SOS.

m. mckenzie   November 17th, 2008 9:54 am ET

Hillary would be fantastic as secretary of state. She is well liked and very knowledgeable.

Mary   November 17th, 2008 9:53 am ET

is wife would be great but Obama isn't great.hmmmmmmmm

Mickie   November 17th, 2008 9:53 am ET

Bill Clinton should learn how to keep his mouth shut and fade into the background, especially since it may just be his connections that may cause Hillary the appointment. He still has not learned he is not the only past or present president and his terms are DONE!

Susan   November 17th, 2008 9:53 am ET

Yes, she would! Obama is picking excellent cabinet!

Jano1234   November 17th, 2008 9:52 am ET

Well, my husband and I were for Clinton and after she was not the nominee, we did vote for McCain. However, if Obama selects Clinton for Secretary of State, we would definitely be behind him. That would show us a great deal about the man and his plan to help America. Clinton would be fabulous!!!

Powell_For_Secretary_of_State   November 17th, 2008 9:52 am ET

Obama should consider Powell, Kerry or Edwards as secretary of state. Powell has experience as secretary of state under Bush, he now probably wants a post in the new administration. Obama needs all the help he can get, from people who are qualified and tested.

Chris   November 17th, 2008 9:51 am ET

I think this would be a great Job for Sen. Clinton. Hope you get's it.

i, for one, am shocked.

YS from Missouri   November 17th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Hilllary Clinton for Secretary of State!!!

Dirty Blue Widgets   November 17th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Alice Brinkley   November 17th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Why is Bill still around and having so much to say about US presidential politics anyway? Goodness knows, his escapades brought down the moral standards in our country, and he thinks no one noticed?

MikeNC   November 17th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Bill Clinton – I loved you, voted for you, and still in some part idolize you. You are one of the greats in my opinion! So when I say this, I do with fortitude and humbleness….

SHUT UP!!!!!!

Lee B.   November 17th, 2008 9:44 am ET

I just don't think Hillary Clinton is the one for the job. I think she is too bossy and would try to run the show.

LyonsPhilly   November 17th, 2008 9:44 am ET

I'm excited. I hope Hillary will takes the position….I believe her an Obama would make a great team.

Alice Brinkley   November 17th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Hillary might as well take the Sec/State job since in 2012 she will be too old to run for President from a senator position. She will be approaching 70 which is senility to the young whippersnappers in the country who mistakenly think only the young have good ideas.

Cindy from NC   November 17th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Isn't it funny that he always says she would do a great job at this or that but she makes it clear she is not looking for the job. I think Bill Clinton keeps doing his wife a sad disservice.

susie   November 17th, 2008 9:41 am ET

I don't understand what the problem is. Our government helps out different countries, with billions of dollars, Yet, the government doesn't want to help out our own industries. Our industries and their employees have paid millions of tax dollars. Why shouldn't we help them? The government is the one who open up trade among countries, they are at fault for losing so many jobs here in America. When the trade was open, that is when everything started to get sucked out of our country. We need to help our own before helping other countries
