President-elect Obama called California's governor and the mayor of Los Angeles to express concern about the wildfires raging in Southern California.
President-elect Obama called California's governor and the mayor of Los Angeles to express concern about the wildfires raging in Southern California.

(CNN) – The man once referred to by a rival campaign as “the biggest celebrity in the world” has intentionally been keeping a very low profile in the awkward limbo period between Election Day and his inauguration on January 20.

But on Monday President-Elect Barack Obama stepped out a little and acted decidedly presidential in the middle of a disaster in California.

Obama called Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villraigosa “to express his concern over the wildfires and to receive an update on the situation,” according to a statement released by the Obama transition team Monday.

In the nearly two weeks since Election Day, Obama has taken great pains to make it clear that President Bush remains in charge of the country and its affairs until Obama’s swearing in two months. At his first press conference as president-elect, Obama stressed that the country only has one president at a time and, Obama did not participate in the recent economic summit of world leaders convened to discuss a coordinated response to the financial crisis that has roiled global securities and credit markets.

Update 3:15 p.m.: The Web site of President-elect Obama's presidential campaign, barackobama.com, was altered after Obama's calls to Gov. Schwarzenegger and Mayor Villaraigosa in order to encourage visitors to the site to donate to relief efforts for the victims of the Southern California wildfires. Well Robert....like everything else I won't believe waht the DNC says....please tell me how hard it is to show the American people his Birth Certificate!

FAYE, NV   November 17th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

His birth certificate and been approved and a legal document that is why he was able to run for President. Please go and learn about what is needed to run for this type of office.

Alaskan Fame Junkie   November 17th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Look up Obama's birth certificate at politifact dot com if you are seriously so deranged that you think it's all a ruse.

I don't have my original birth certificate either...only a copy because the original was destroyed a long time ago. Are you going to try to tell me that I'M not a US citizen too?

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 17th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

What exactly is Obama going to do with his 'update on the situation'? Maybe Superobama will just fly to California and use his super breathe to blow out the fire.

Alaskan Fame Junkie   November 17th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

McCain wasn't born in the US. Why doesn't that bother you, Mike?

Whether Obama is American or not he is your new president like it or not. I know you are having a hard time getting over yourselve but with god's help your hate filled heart with soften some day.
I have been following your comments to try to make any sense out of them but your stupidity keeps on giving. Make good use of your time by helping someone else, neighbor, friend, homeless or anybody instead of trying to constantly say bad things about others. Also, seek help because you may not notice, but stupidity is evident in all your comments.

Robert in MN   November 17th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

About the birth certificate thing. The U.S. Constitution provides that you must be a U.S. Citizen to be president. You can bet that Obama's birth records were scrutinized and verified before his name could've been placed in nomination by the Democratic Party. So ENOUGH ALREADY about birth records. If you've got an issue with his policies/positions, then lets discuss them and get off the juvenile topics that are moot at this point in history.

I think Prez Obama is good in dealing with politic.

First, he resigned from Senate position.... making his vote won't count to look fair and neutral Prez instead of talking on behalf of Dems.

Then, he influenced some Republicans on his ideas to gain supports. By doing this, he may gain more votes for the auto industry bailout compared to his one vote.

Okay, so I have a question to those people still talking about the birth certificate.

If this is such a big deal then why didn't either McCain or Palin address this on the campaign trail (heaven knows they addressed everything else that they possibly could)?

If this was a legitimate argument then they would've brought it up ... trust me.

Delano, Gamaliel, Milhous, Woodrow, Birchard, Knox, Grover, Quincy, Fitzgerald, Baines, Walker, Howard, Simpson, Abram, Calvin, Wilson.

What do all these names have in common? They are the middle names of presidents ... and they are all family last names, given as middle names.

And just like Barack Hussein Obama, the presidents who had these middle names had nothing to do with getting those names ...

What makes a person great is what he or she does; character is what counts.

I sat at my home on the Intercoastal Cannal over the weekend, and counted 5 barges moving freight. I normally see 20-30 during a weekend. People, we are in a huge mess.. Obama will leave office filthy rich like all ex-presidents. Thanks for voting Obama, now we are all going to see this country fall apart more than it has since he won. Should that tell you guys something. People are scared of this guy. Way to flaky for me.

But with the blessings of God, we were smart enough to elect someone who has the intelligence and know-who to try to fix this mess.

For those who voted for George W., we forgive you. Although, when you cast the ballot for him, you played a role in where we are today. Well, maybe it would not have made a difference whether or not you voted for him; the plan was to steal the election anyway.

President Bush has really lowered our expectations I must say. This would not be a news item before Katrina disaster.

Folks – this should be a norm and not an exception. You can raise your expectations a little bit and expect our President to keep in touch with the natural disaster situations like the current one in California. There is a lot about our new President Elect that is impressive and even down right amazing, but this particular one – you can simply expect going forward from all the Presidents except for President Bush...

Some people are so critical of President Elect Obama before he has had a chance to effect change. Were you ever that critical of President Bush? You have formed criticisms and made decisions based on unfounded hearsay. Many still support President Bush for lying, for awarding contracts to friends without bids, usurping more power than any other President, allowing Americans to suffer and die needless from Katrina without even the smallest care to call about their welfare, and to take this country into this financial disaster; not caring about the everyday people losing their jobs, but concerned over only Wall Street. This man concern is for Americans who eat with sterling silver flatware, his own kind, not for those of us who eat with plastic or stainless steel.

Scott Tucson   November 17th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I think it is a sad commentary on the American people that, judging by the comments here, we don't seem to have any inclination to give Obama the benefit of the doubt. Who are we that we try so hard to find fault with anything our leader tries to do? I wonder sometimes what kind of life a person has who can only seek the worst in others? Who can only attribute negative motivations? If all we look for is something to criticize we will probably find it, but what does that make us? How can we improve anything that way?

Actually, Obama's call to Schwarznegger wasn't to express concern about the fires but to get Bradgelina's, Bennifer's and J-Lo's cell phone numbers!
His call to Villaraigosa was to congratulate him on the latest hottie he was seen with on TMZ!
Obama is a figurehead and any serious questions or issues are above his 'paygrade'!

Greed is not good   November 17th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Ash all over the place and very hard to breath in So Cal. Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts Pres. Obama.

sine   November 17th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

what we should be mentioning is the fact that the CURRENT "President' hasn't said or done anything in regards to California – Obama the President-Elect is going above and beyond, even if it is just a "phone-call".

rusell   November 17th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

can anyone say '" THAT'S MY PRESIDENT ".................

Blue is my favourite colour   November 17th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

AJ, Ha ha, you're funny. Obama huffing and puffing and putting out fires.

He actually probably could–but there are too many fires that Bush started, so Obama's lung capacity is in overdrive. Right now, it simply can't reach that far across the country.

Ken   November 17th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Alright people just need to calm down a bit here. I support the guy but we have to keep things realistic. Man, its like people are expecting him to fix the whole world. On the other hand I have to say, it is nice to see him reach across the isle with his former opponents. I just hope that they can get things done.

DOH!!!   November 17th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Thanks for caring Mr. President-Elect.

Michele   November 17th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

to BM: what does Governor Palin have to do with this story? You need a chill pill.

Wendy: You will be wishing you had Bush back in about 6 months.

BM   November 17th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

It's unfortunate that Americans have less confidence in the newly elcted president than the Russians. 80% of Russians would have voted for Obama, yet his own people are still finding fault. But of couse, Jesus wasn't accepted by his own either.

Dave   November 17th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

That's all it is as you stated: an act.

Rob   November 17th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

His only questions were:

How's Oprah's house?

What are you doing to protect Oprah's house?

Or maybe, seeing as the rich people live there (the ones who are going to do their 'patriotic duty' and spread their wealth), he's making sure not too many of them have their posessions burned, so he can take them when he gets into office.

Matt   November 17th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Pretty sure he isn't being sworn in next month CNN.....

Jackie   November 17th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

What difference does it make. Obama is the shadiest president of the U.S. ever to be elected. Who knows what he is going to do or what he wants to try to do?

SF from GA   November 17th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Well, Ry..that would be why he is called Present-elect..and not President Obama

Sue in MI   November 17th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Keep on hating him, Republicans. How long was it again before Bush reacted to 9-11? Katrina? Losing in Iraq? The housing meltdown? For goodness sakes, if Obama WASN'T taking an interest in everything going on in America, you'd be all over him for not being prepared to take office. But I guess you all want to see him fail, so you can't quite get in through your heads that he won't. Time will tell, but time will show that this man is the most intelligent President we've had in a long time. He's also the most methodical, honest, and ready. But, hey, he's half-black, so there must be something to hate, huh? And I get a kick out the the Messiah remarks...the Democrats never have called him that...that's the Republican perception.

I wonder why you never heard us call Gov. Palin the Messiah for her hopefulness, inspiration of millions, and wonderful ideas for the betterment of the USA? Oh, right.

AL   November 17th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Does President GW Bush even know about the fires in California???

Jealous Joe? LOL Guess that now that the focus is off plumbers making $250K a year you've found a new past time in between waiting for your first album and book deal to come out right? Bawhahaha

Lance   November 17th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

To AJ:

Who said that Obama was the Messiah? Rush Limbaugh? Really, it's time to let the bitterness go. It seems to me that the same people who were calling Obama unpatriotic for not wearing a flag pin are the truly unpatriotic ones by not rallying behind the democratically elected President of the United States. Dissent is patriotic but hatefulness isn't. The Limbaugh's, Hannitiy's & AJ's are just being hateful. May God bless you & give you relief from all the hate you're carrying around.

cool onlooker   November 17th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I feel saddened by some jealous and vindicative comments here. We should count our blessings that we finally see a wise leader after this many years.

Let go your envy and relentness. Obama is wise man.

California Gold   November 17th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

It's dismaying to read the anger and caustic remarks directed at Obama and CNN. Let's not forget how many families are now homeless and only have the clothes on their back. The holidays are going to be grim. Families with children are going to need all the kindness and support to cope with the emotional damage of their lives going up in smoke. If anyone has suffered catastrophic loss due to acts of God you might think more about these families than using this as a platform to spew venom.

Ry   November 17th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Sorry, some editing is needed here. "President Bush remains in charge of the country and its affairs until Obama’s swearing in next month." Pretty sure that he isn't president until January 2009.

Central Scruitinizer   November 17th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Nazir Jamal. Hopefully weve seen the last of her. Listening to Sarah trying to communicate what is gratiously often mistaken for thought, I am often taken back 40- 50 years ago to the era of the cheesy Sci-fi movies. Mainly the ones with the evil robot that is meeting its final demise and as its having its "brains" beaten in by a pick ax , is still trying to deliver its monosylibic pleas for mercy as it flails and flounders around the room. Her total lack of cohesive thought and the ability to blend 3-5 sentences into one totally diconnected sentence that runs on for a paragraph is very indicative of bipolar illness stuck in manic phase. Would LUVVVVV to see those medical records!!!!!

God Bless Obama!!! He will truely care about the American people!!! He was NOT born with a silver spoon in his mouth and knows how middle America works!!! He's done his own laundry and grocery shopping. Obama truely understands!!!

endithinks   November 17th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

We all need to take a breath. Bush is still president. Of course it is okay to show concern over these fires. Any of us who call relatives in california or who send money are doing the same thing.

Let's at least agree that being concerned for your fellow American is still okay in this country.

Your are sooo right   November 17th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

HE IS ACTING – He will surround himself with people that are very knoledgeable, experienced etc. He has to, he does not have a clue. I thought he was going to be independent of Washington – looks like that was a lot of hot air – no surprise!!!

The fires in California keep getting worse because of the flawed thinking that no one should cut brush, trees, etc. If people don' t clean out the forest, nature will.

The Iraq war was just a really, really long bad dream.

Unfortunately, by believing Bush was president, we effectively slept through the last eight years, so, yes, we really are this broke.

Bush needs to continue to preside over the crisis for as long as required. By the time Obama takes office the situation will already be on the mend.

November will continue to be a dull month, but by the middle of December a significant recovery will be on the way in economic activities.

MLH   November 17th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

I'm not sure how much of this article is news. President Elect Obama has behaved the way one would expect a president-elect to behave by not being in President Bush's face. As for calling about the wildfires, why wouldn't he? Didn't Obama and McCain make sure they got updates on economic woes while they were running for office? I don't see how calling the Governator is any different.

just a thought   November 17th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

obama is a graceful man, america is blessed to have this caring man as our new president.

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   November 17th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Leave it to Obama to be concerned. Bush probably can't find California on the map even. The fires in Calif seem to get worse every year too.

CNN...BREAKING NEWS......

CNN is now reporting that Barack Obama has descended from the heavens and is now in the middle of the valley fire. He has stomped out (with only his bare feet) 90% of the fire and is awaiting the thousands of firefighters to put out the other ten percent. CNN can also confirm that Barack Obama has stopped the Santa Ana winds and made them into a gentle cool zephyr.

BM   November 17th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

This is a message for all you bigots that are wishing and hoping for Obama's presidencey to fail. Well, let me be the first to offer you a shovel to dig the hole, but make sure that you dig it deep and wide, because if by chance he should fail, you are going to have to get in that very same hole with him and don't expect McCain and Palin who you obviously voted for to pull you out.

Proud to be American   November 17th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

It is nice to know our President elect is in touch with America.... we all know like Obama stated that there is only one President but to show sincere concern is to be applauded not condemned.... will I be spending my whole time while he is in office defending him? Give Obama a chance and take him off the microscope.

Thanks,

Carlo, Raleigh NC   November 17th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

I really don't get why conservatives are in such a panic, it's amazing seeing it every where you go. Seems like over night conservatives and McCain supporters were no where to be found or heard, now you can't get away from the constant rants about how Obama is going to turn us into a communist state, palin will save the day in 4 years and even a nut job catholic priest basically breaking with official church doctrine and unilaterally making voting for Obama a sin.

Listen people, now is the time to come together for the good of the nation. If John McCain him self can do it, then I ask you to follow suite. Hell even Mr "You're either with me or against me" George W. Bush is taking this a lot better than the over whelming majority of you. From my perspective, this appears to be the sad effects of rove politics, I hope that in 4 years you will all recover.

Tom in Delaware   November 17th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas acted presidential too...big deal.

Het, did you guys hear that BigFoot thing last summer was nothing more than a hoax!

Tammy - KCMO   November 17th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I think it's safe to say that a majority of us wouldn't mind if Bush got dumped now and Obama took over immediately. When will you post the news on Bush's latest gift to the oil and gas industry?

Bush can't be gone soon enough!

I wish Sarah Palin would take some initiative and act prseidential, whether we like it or not I can vision Ms. Palin running against Obama and may win election by a landslide in 4 years.
DON'T COUNT Palin Out!

Go Palin, Go.

JJ in Chula Vista, CA   November 17th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

I think that as much as he's kept a low profile and has been trying not to step on George Bush's feet, I'm sure Barack Obama's working diligently to make the decisions of who should be in his cabinet, even with all the opinions swirling around the news and the blogs. I, for one, think that with the election results, 48% of the people would actually be happy to see John McCain be asked to be the next Secy. of State or the next Secy. of Defense, given the confidence that the American people had in John McCain's foreign policy and military experience.

White Christian Mother for Obama   November 17th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

I have NEVER seen a president start taking some amount of control and set up as early as I have seen Obama do it. This man is very presidential and very ready for his position and even now he researching, studying, learning everything he can about everything so he can make the adjustments he wants quickly when he takes office. Most if see start looking at everything seriously after they take office. Obama wants to make change just like he has been fighting for and he is still working on doing it. Its just amazing!!! I feel my tax dollars that pay his salary is very worth it... VS those presidents that just sit in that seat in the oval office and do nothing on my dime while the country just wastes away!!!

Soccer Nana   November 17th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

What is wrong with making a telephone call to inquire about the disastrous wildfire? Who knows; perhaps he is also being invited to a meeting. The transition team, afterall, released the statement.

Obama is not selling the magazines to people; the magazines' publishhers are "using" him to sell their magazines.

Hey Jerk of a Govinator ....

President Obama would deploy some federal resources to help you out but you were such an immature, sophomoric, muscle-headed jock bully type that he has reconsidered.
