WASHINGTON (CNN) — Soon-to-be first lady Michelle Obama will visit the White House Tuesday afternoon with her daughters, Malia and Sasha, according to First Lady Laura Bush's press secretary, Sally McDonough.

McDonough said Mrs. Bush had invited Mrs. Obama to visit the White House again when her daughters were available.

I'm sure Laura Bush will be totally captivated by the girls.

(I really don't understand all the mean & petty remarks I've been reading. I mean, what's up with that?!?)

STLouisGal   November 18th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Here's the deal, folks. It's the residence of the first family and they get to make it their home. If it helps the girls it's a great idea for Michelle's mom to go with them. And, guess what? ET, it doesn't matter what you think about it. It's their family and their home. Get over yourself.

Kona   November 18th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

To ET,
Go read some history you idiot. In-laws have lived in the white house before (can you say Harry Truman? Thought not, stupid).

Imback   November 18th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

Anyone who takes out their personal meaness and unkindness on little children and their grandmother is a very sad and pitiful soul. You need help and you should look for it today. Really!

Pat Pa.   November 18th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

@ Et and " we need change, tx "

Just what is your problem ? It must be terrible to wake up each day with your attitudes. Grow up ! You are just aggravating yourselves because the rest of us don't care what you think.

It has to be awesome for these girls to have such loving parents and to be able to live the lives they are going to be able to live the next 4/8 years.
Having Grandma with them is a plus. Not all of us had advantages like this. God Bless them all.

Amy   November 18th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

@ET….

You people find anything to complain about!!! Give it a break please…

HATERS!!!

LUPE CURIEL   November 18th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

I am soo proud and honored to be living in such historical times. To think in 50 years I will be telling my grand babys all we have lived through. I am a proud AMERICAN, who truly believes that dreams come true for all, not just the few and chosen. Please lets all support our President elect. Especially in these difficult times. May GOD bless America and President elect Obama.

MAMMEL   November 18th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

Oh, I know the girls will love it…..why can't Michelles mom stay with them? they have plenty of room and who better to help care for the girls then their granny!

Re your comment, "Why is the american tax payers letting Michelle's mother stay in the white house? Hillarys mother didn't stay there to help her child, Obama is acting like Bush, but in a different way, both think they're KINGS"

I don't even know where to start. What have the family dynamics of the Clinton family, or child care choices they made, got to do with this?

It is a great honor to be able to serve one's country as President-elect Obama is able to do, and there will be plenty of wonderful opportunities for the Obama girls, but as the mother of two similarly-aged girls, I can tell you how hard it is for those kids to leave friends, familiar surroundings, extended family, etc., because of their dad's new job. If it works out that Grandma can be there a lot for them, that's great. But really, it's no business of mine, or yours, to comment – the First Family is an American family, and they have privacy rights, just like you and I do.

Linda Thulani   November 18th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

One last comment, then I'm done, Neither Mrs. Obama nor the President-Elect ever said that Mrs. Robinson would be residing in the White House, they didn't say that on 60 Minutes nor did Michelle said that when asked in a recent interview that her Mother would be living in the White House, I do recall her saying that her Mother hadn't decided if she would be coming to DC with them but if she did they would find a place for her wherever she wanted to live.

Hi Hater
quit hating THis is something that black families do. They obviously trust no one but her mother to take care of the girls whats wrong with that?

It is no diffrent then what any other president would do

I hope the cleaning ladies are on call to clean up after Michelle

It will be wonderful to see the Obama Girls grow-up in a such a prestigious home.

And if I were either one of them(Barack and Michelle), I would want Mrs Robinson there to look after the girls…after all. both of them will be busy during day and some nights.

Tubby The Tuba   November 18th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Michelle, take care of your beautiful girls, and let them grow naturally. It is about time to have young kids in the White House. You go girl!

Becky, Midwest   November 18th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Is this really news? Really? Please, CNN get real. Who cares? Did we expect them NOT to visit the White House? Ridiculous.

Bluz   November 18th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

the others who did not have a Mom to stay in the White House …..had nannies! I'd rather my mother was with my children if it were me

mw   November 18th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

The Obama's can have whoever they desire in the whitehouse to care for their children. We don't have anything to say about who they hire for a nanny. Do they have anything to say about who you hire for a nanny?
The best person for all of them, especially the children is their grandmother.

Cami   November 18th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

I think the gorls will be totally overwhelmed and awed by the White House. How wonderful for them.

I also read somewhere that Michelle's mom took care of the girls while their parents were campaigning. She will only be at the WH part-time and will also spend time in her own home in Chicago. Both she and the Obama's will be keeping their homes.

Texas Trail Kitty   November 18th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Welcome home First Lady and First Kids. It's been along time coming. We love you!

Beverly, NYC   November 18th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

ET November 18th, 2008 5:36 pm ET: Mind your business, the Obama's have a right to have anyone they choose take care of their girls when they have other obligations. These children are being uprooted from their environment to be watched over by strangers. Yet you begrudge thm the comfort of their grandmother's familiar face. I'm guessing ET that you didn't grow up in a multi-generational caring household. Get a life.

Bridget   November 18th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

I'm thrilled to see that Laura B. and Michelle O. are putting any differences their husbands had between them aside and are getting along. Mrs. Bush had said she wanted to meet the girls and it looks like she'll get her wish. I'm sure the girls are going to be nervous at first, but she's a grandmother and they'll sense that grandmother instincts.

Jay   November 18th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

ET stop crying, everyone has guess stay in there house. Plus no one know for sure if she will be staying and for how long. PLEASE

Xanthippe   November 18th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Michelle's mom at the White House will make life more real for the kids. She will help keep folks grounded and she's a tremendous help to the family. I'm GLAD if the kids granny is there. Saves on paying for a nanny. I'd rather have my kids with family than with a stranger, wouldn't you? I think people are just jealous they don't get along as well with their kin.

Proud to be American   November 18th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

ET……Is it really that big of a deal to have Michele's mother living in the White House? I tell you, some people complain for the sake of complaining. GET A LIFE!!!

Lee for Obama   November 18th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

To ET (Why is the american tax payers letting Michelle's mother stay in the white house?)

I think it is wonderful that the children will have their grandmother close at hand. Many American households include three generations and this decision underscores the Obamas' strong family values. I imagine that the cost to taxpayers would be miniscule, yet the message of respect and love is huge. What a lovely family.

Linda Thulani   November 18th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

I am the Mother of a young adult African American male and I put my son through 12 years of private school from pre through 8, graduated from a public HS in a Magnet Arts Program…whatever choice the Obama's make in terms of their children has and will be the best choice for all involved, as one of the other comments stated they know what they want and what has to be considered in terms of security, etc. Let's deal with the "big stuff" and leave family matters alone. They don't need people telling them what kind of "dog" to get, we need to know how he is going to implement national health care and get this country back to work with all the infra-structure $ and other "important" issues, like our 401k's, Social Security and that insane war. Thank you very much, we did our job, now let him do his and let the new First Lady do hers.

Ken in NC   November 18th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

@ ET.

Michelle's mother can stay in the White House if she wants to stay. There is no rule or law that says she cannot stay. She is part of the First Family.

She is the nations First Granny. I'm sorry if you have a problem with it but the girls will have their Grand Mother with them.

Maria   November 18th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Whats wrong with Michelles mother living with them. I admire her for that, because she probably wants to keep her children close to their grandmother. I admire anyone who wants to keep their families together. In my work I see many elderly people neglected by their children and its so sad. Good for you Michelle!

Linda32   November 18th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

ET, how does their grandmother effect your tax dollars exactly? If anything, it probably saves you some bucks, lol. At least they are not hiring nannies. That's their home for the next 4, hopefully 8 years, they can have whomever they want live with them.

Simmy   November 18th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Those precious young ladies are blessed; and what is so wonderful is that they realize how blessed they are. They are down to earth – sweet little ladies! God bless them, and help them to adjust to their new lives quickly!

So are you an idiot or just trying to stir up something out of nothing?

the liar hillary had a LIVE IN NANNY at the whitehouse, you as a taxpayer paid for her, just as you did for kennedy's nanny and the nanny of every OTHER President that had a family in the White House in the 20th and 21st century. The fact is that having Michelle's mother living in the Whitehouse, to take care of the children will save you money.. but hey like I said you are either an idiot or just trying to stir up somethig out of nothing.. why don't you send the liar hillary some money to pay off her debt and leave the intelligent people alone….

Angie-OHIO   November 18th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

I think it is great that Michelle wants her mother at the White House. Lets the daughters have a familiar person in their daily lives. Because I'm sure there will be times when Michelle will want to be there but 1st lady duties will have her away. Good going Michelle. You and your family are in our daily prayers.

jim   November 18th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

J.P.   November 18th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

How lovely… the children of MISTER Obama, Democrat and general all-around good-guy and simple man of the people, will be sent to private school. Yet, the junior senator opposes vouchers to simply recollect MY OWN TAX MONEY to send my kid to a school of my choice.

Democrats, as always: do as I say, not as I do. The hypocrisy is breath taking.

Robert in raleigh   November 18th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

In response to ET that said why the grandma should stay in the white house, I don't know the details but here is info for you. I am glad if grandma can stay and take care of the kids instead of some stranger. Having multiple generations living under one roof strengthens family and may be this will teach many Americans that taking care of elders is their duty. Not rotting away in some nursing home!

Samilton   November 18th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

I HOPE THIS DOESN'T CHANGE THE OBAMA FAMILY….

I'M PRAYING FOR THEM.

Kristin   November 18th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

ET, I woud like to respond to your comment about Michelle's mother staying in the White House.

You know, her mother did help take care of the kids when both Michelle and Barack were campaigning in order to provide the two girls with stability while their parents were away.

Michelle already said that she wanted to continue to provide that stability for her kids. Let's think about it..do you think Michelle is going to be sitting up in the White House eating all day and picking up her kids from school? I think not!

Peggy - TX   November 18th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

ET – You may be disappointed and a bit angry after your candidate lost so miserably, Dems swept the house, and now Dems are obviously solidifying their new found power, but you are NOW way out of line. Obama and his immediate family will move into the white house and you are nit picking because it might cost tax payers a few extra bucks to feed Grandma. It is not like they are adding to the 16 rooms reserved for them. Get over it and try gripe about something of substance – please do not take it out on Grandma.

Bob   November 18th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Responding to the comment about taxpayers paying for the grandmother to stay in the White House: My grandmother stayed in our house when I was a child, and I don't believe it cost very much more, perhaps for a little more food. In return my grandmother read to me, looked after me when my parents were busy, and just generally was nice to have around the house.

As a taxpayer, I don't mind at all that the Obama children's grandmother is staying with them.

Why is the american tax payers letting Michelle's mother stay in the white house? Hillarys mother didn't stay there to help her child, Obama is acting like Bush, but in a different way, both think they're KINGS
______________________________________________________
To ET,

Hilary probably had a private nanny for the child. And even if she didn't, If you don't know anything leave the people alone.

If it weren't for the mother in law, OBAMA would not be president. While they were on the campaign she took care of their children, not knowing whether he would win or not. If Obama's grandma were still alive and he decided to bring her into the Whitehouse, would you have a problem with that too?

Mark C   November 18th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Pretty sure you've been anti-Obama from the get go, but I'll break it down for ya anyway. President-Elect and Mrs. Obama can have whomever they wish live with them at the White House. Nancy, MD   November 18th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

This is great. The kids will be able to be the hostesses for the Easter Egg Roll. What a great sight that will be. The Obama kids are adorable and they are good kids. It's much ado about nothing.

Also, Mrs. Robinson, the girls grandmother should be allowed to stay there. Why not. The girls will be comfortable with her and not some stranger while their parents are out of town.

mavericky   November 18th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

ummm most places of employement allow breaks in which you can use the computer… it's not the dinosaur age Jen

Marcy, IN   November 18th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

Dear ET,

Mrs. Robinson won't be the first mother-in-law who stayed at the White House, Bess Truman's mother stayed there, as well as Franklin Roosevelt's mother.

Also, what first lady had children as young as these kids? We haven't had kids this young since Caroline. Amy Carter was one child. So I think Mrs. Obama needs her mother and the kids need their grandmother. There are 16 rooms in the family quarters and surely they can let her stay in one of them. I'd much rather have her than somebody who "pays" to stay in the Lincoln bedroom, as they did with Bill Clinton.

Michelle will be a better first lady, knowing her kids are with her mother. I don't blame the Obamas one bit for moving her in that house.

Rave   November 18th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

To ET,
For the mess that our current president created in terms of expenses and debt…. Obama could probably let a 1000 Americans per day in White House and finish his 2 terms by 2016 and it still wont cost a 1000th part of what they spent in just Iraq war alone.
Go back and tell this to your Looser McCain
