This is actually good for Palin and the Repubs as it removes any chance of her selecting herself to serve out Stevens' term once he would have been tossed by the Repub caucuss. This gal is clearly not what the Repubs need to get their house in order......a strident religious extremist with limited appeal to just about everyone outside of the evangelistas. Perhaps her absence from the national scene will allow the Repubs to see other better qualified leaders to bring along who appeal to a broader audience and can offer real solutions to 21st century challenges instead of resorting to silly name-calling (like Ms. Palin seemed to like to do so much).

D.Kimbro OHIO~ I must correct you. Palin cannot appoint herself to the seat. A Dem has won. The only way she could appoint herself would be if Stevens had won and was later expelled.

I should also point out that by Stevens argument that he has not "yet been convicted" IE. not sentenced, he cannot expect a pardon by Bush. Bush is OUT 1/20/09, Stevens won't be sentenced until 2/09. He is SOL.

Thank heaven that Palin won't be able to appoint herself! The faster she fades away, the better.

She'll get voted out of office next time around. Her 15 minutes are up and now she's been exposed for the skank she is. Hopefully ALL doors will be shut to her then, except that of wife and mother. Obviously her family has suffered because of her ambitions. Ambitions are wonderful – but not when your children suffer and apparently they have – teenage daughter knocked up and unmarried (or has the shot-gun wedding taken place yet?) oldest son in trouble for drugs forced to join miliary, youngest child has disability. I imagine Willow and Piper probably have some social or developmental problems as well, we just can't 'see' what they are – yet.

I understand he's viewed as a "good guy" by many Alaskans, and yeah, he might've done lots of "good things" for THEM only (pork barrel included), but truth is he broke the law and besides...for Christ sake..he's 85 already!
