Arizona governor top choice for homeland security, sources say

Napolitano is Obama's choice for Homeland Security Secretary, sources say.
Napolitano is Obama's choice for Homeland Security Secretary, sources say.

(CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama's top choice for secretary of homeland security is Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, multiple Democratic sources close to the transition told CNN on condition of anonymity.

One source said he believed the final decision depends on the vetting of the Democratic governor, much like the selection of Eric Holder for attorney general.

Also, multiple Democratic sources say billionaire Chicago businesswoman Penny Pritzker is Obama's leading choice for commerce secretary. Pritzker ran Barack Obama's record-breaking fundraising effort, serving as the campaign's finance chair.

The sources say she would accept the job, which would not be formally offered until vetting is complete. But whether the rigors of the particular Obama vetting process will present a challenge to a business woman with no record in public office - and presumably extensive financial holdings - was
unknown.

  2. Finds it funny

i find it awefully funny how just a few days ago i was watching the cable news shows and heard political analysts saying all his picks are men. where are the women? suddenly, he names a couple woman. i think he waits to hear ideas that are said to the public through news media and then makes his decisions.

  3. Hope She Works Out

I hope she looks at the Corp of Engineers and how they are driven by money only. They couldn't care less about the DHS contractors doing a good job. All they want is money for their agency. It's just like George Bush to have one agency pitted against another. The government is not what it used to be where people cared about service.

I don't know her, but we need a change. I don't think the same person needs to head DHS for more than 4 years. The job is too stressful, and there should be new energy.

In his praise of her, John McCain once again shows why he is so respected and admired by so many.

Great Choice! As Governor of Arizona, Napolitano has done nothing to secure the border with Mexico, except to complain about the Bush Administration. In fact, she fought every effort by Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, to catch and deport illegal aliens. Her claim to fame is her campaign support for Obama, and her reward is to become the top officer responsible to keep America safe? What a stunning collection of retread hacks! At one time this idiot, proposed to install water fountains in the AZ desert so the illegals sneaking in would have water. Bad choice, very pro illegals. What would you expect from the messiah!

Chill out people – yes he is selecting people from the Clinton years. Why is this a problem? During the Clinton years we had a prosperous economy. When he left office there was a budget surplus. As for morality – yes he did lack in that area. However, so does the current president – lying to go to war, condoning torture, etc.

Decisions are made by the President people, not his staff or Cabinet members. He listens to what they have to say, but he and he alone, makes the decisions and is responsible for the outcome of those decisions. As Harry Truman said "the buck stops here."

Don't we want the best people giving him advice?

To all Americans of good will and good conscience:

    No human is ever illegal.
Unless you are an American Indian (of which most undocumented immigrants from Mexico are; surprise!) don't look down on our newest "Americans." the undocumented are building and repairing the country's infrastructure and proping up our construction and farming industries.
Unlike the Puritans and Pilgrims (who didn't get visas or any persmission to take our land) the newest undocumented immigrants are not coming here to steal land or persecute the indigenous people.
Again, no human is ever illegal in this country or this world. to say otherwise just exposes your racist, xenophobic views.
America is not only for those who look like you. sorry.

Foam at the mouth all you want Rick–

Obama is putting together a good mix of Clinton folks and folks who are rising up. Napolitano is highly thought of both in Arizona (no matter what Scott thinks) and around the country.

Scott--would you want back one of the shining Republican Arizona governors? Ev Meacham or Fife Symington?
