A new poll out Thursday paints a bleak picture for the GOP.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The Republican Party has hit a new low.

Just 34 percent of Americans in a Gallup Poll released Thursday say they have a favorable view of the party, down 40 percent from a month ago, before the election.

What’s worse: 61 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of the Republican Party.

According to Gallup, that unfavorable rating is the highest the polling organization has recorded for the GOP since the measure was established in 1992.

The poll of national adults was conducted on November 13-16 with a three percent margin of error.

The numbers are slightly up from a CNN poll released last week that indicated a 54 percent unfavorable rating for Republicans. Only 38 percent of those polled had a favorable rating for the party.

Meanwhile, Democrats continue to bask in the glow of President-elect Barack Obama’s historic victory on November 4. The Gallup poll suggests that 55 percent of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party, with 39 percent saying they have an unfavorable view. Those numbers are mostly unchanged from a mid-October survey.

As the debate rages within GOP ranks over where to take the party, the poll might offer some guidance.

Most Republicans - 59 percent - want the party to become more conservative, according to the poll. Another 28 percent want it to remain about the same ideologically, while only 12 percent would prefer to see the Republican Party become less conservative.

Independents are split on whether the party should track left or right: 35 percent of independent voters say the GOP should become more conservative, and 35 percent say less conservative.

Well, the GOP was taken over by the neo-cons and turned into something that no longer resembles itself. When Bush, Sr. became the VP for Reagan, the neo-con faction began their ascent. Reagan did not care for Bush but was strongarmed into it. Do you really think Obama's choice was Biden? Come on, these people are chosen by the real power in this country. These are all lapdogs. More people in this country must remove the blinders.

frank la may   November 20th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

I have warned you for months John Mccain would not could not win the election. you choose to have him a loser now two times to run against obama who had all kinds of press. what fools you are. now your going to have to rebuilt the party. and i don't think you will see the white house for a number of years. you blew it and got what you earned.

The GOP is like a BAD STOCK everyone wants to BAILOUT or LIKE THE CHINESE MILK that is making everyone SICK and is becoming like three AUTO MAKERS, FLYING IN THEIR PRIVATE JETS AND BEGGING FOR HELP.

Angie   November 20th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Its going to be a long time befort the Gop can come back, they have to cleanse themselves from Bush And Cheny and start by charging them for the crimes they have commited!

LM75   November 20th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

It looks like finally the American people have come to their senses. When they re-elected Bush I seriously questioned the intelligence of the American people. Welcome to adult leadership.

James   November 20th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Day after the election, some on the right including Family Research Council (Bear in mind these people have absolutely nothing to do with family), had a big wig meeting an decided it was John McCain and the Republican moderates who are at fault.

They then chartered a cruise ship and went on a cruise with the likes of Mitt Romney and most likely Newt to hammer this point.

They don't get it! If you don't include the rest of America in your party, this is what is going to happen. The GOP today with the evangelicals, family research council, and with Rovian politics is a narrow, bigoted group of people.

Don   November 20th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Until you start reporting the truth I will consider your Gallop poles as to be a more unbiased opinion until the enjoy your victory.

#1 Yes the Republican Party is in shambles. They brought it on themselves with arrogance, a neglect for the country's citizens, their outdated platform and then trying to disguise themselves as moderate liberals in the last election. I agree. This is old news.

BUT..

#2 Everyone likes Democrats because it is a change in party leadership at the White House and in Congress. Just as simple as they have received the goodwill, it can be squandered quickly if they start doing things that the Republicans have done as well..(i.e. not ending the war in Iraq, corrupted officials exposed, not following through on campaign promises, etc.).

Be very careful, Democrats....you'll also be under intense scrutiny. A failure to deliver could bring up the rise of a third party in 2012...oddly enough, 100 years to the day when Teddy Roosevelt ran as the most successful 3rd party candidate based on electoral college vote in recent time.

Peggy T.   November 20th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

It's been eight years of the GOP thumbing it's nose at the American People. The GOP with George Bush / Dick Cheney at the helm have run this country in to the ground. When you give tax breaks to big business & oil companys, then turn to the American Consumer & say that's the breaks when they lose their homes, their jobs etc. Then it's time for a change. The GOP with George Bush / Dick Cheney at the wheel have given tax breaks to companys that take their jobs over seas. They have given money to Mexico to fight drugs, while we keep two drug enforcement agents jailed for doing their jobs. Under the GOP many People in this country can't get help with their home loans that are losing their homes, many have lost their jobs. All I hear from George Bush & the GOP is ahh so sad, that is your problem. Yet they let wall street & the banking industry run wild with deregulation, then banking industry wants bailed out. The big three auto makers need bailed out some of its due to the government letting them stay the course with out making the changes needed some of it's their own fault, but that being said, the workers at these plants need help to keep their jobs, the government can't afford to let them go belly up. They actually produce a product, they need to increase the mileage the vehicles get & change the dependance on gas to electric or hydrogen or ethonyl vehicles. But, the point is, no wonder the American People are mad at the GOP look at the mess they've created. They did it to themselfs...

Sarkar   November 20th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

The Republicans should wonder why their last convention was attended by only 5% minorities. More or less conservative is not the factor here, they need to stop hatred, fear-mongering, bullying, creating suspicion etc. Arrogance, intolerance, ignorance, and incompetence – all these are now the characteristics of the Republican Party.

Wow.

Nurul Aman   November 20th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

The survey results makes a good sense of the economic and political reality of this country for decades. The so called Reaganeconomics of deregulation since 1980s brought the corporate lobbyists take over the govt. policies and the economy in the hands of a few failed/greedy Wall Street managements. The results are the significant decline of economic growth and standard of living for majority Americans. The so called core values of the Republican Party is so Un-American and obsolete that the party did not show any vision for better future of this country. Like many others say these days, I say the same, "THE GOP IS IRRELEVANT FOR AMERICA OF THE 21ST CENTURY". I can' t agree more with this general perception of the voters and political thinkers. The GOP ship is sinking fast, and will go down under water in a decade or so.

SJC   November 20th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Conservatism, which is the heart of the Republican party, is a failed, bankrupt and now discredited ideology. Almost by definition, conservatives do not progess or adjust their views as times change. Their only successes politically is when liberalism fails or does some really stupid things (and this unfortunately happens quite often). Reagan took advantage of liberal failures and brought in an era of conservatism. And for 30 years they have not changed at all. Bush, maybe the most conservative president ever, ran into some bad luck and with his gross incompetance exposed the dismal failure of conservatism.

As long as conservatives obsess themselves with trivial issues like second amendment rights and building creationist museums and fight or deny proven science like global warming they will fade away and just become a bad memory.

Candy Wilson   November 20th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

What I can not seem to get over and I have friends and family who are Rep. is the aroma of hatred that seemed to burst from Christians.. I am a Christian and I truly believe Obama is a Christian.. It reflects in the simple way he treats his family. And Fox News talks con't about Obama in a derogitory way while praising Gov. Pailn. It was day after day after day. And then complain about networks being biased.. They were the worst.. And I find this to be the equilalent to what the GOP was doing...I met a large amount of Dem. while working the election who were Adv. Degree educated with high-food change jobs. Yet the Rep. make a picture of Dem. as being lazy looking for a hand-out.. You do "reap what you sow..." But then I look at Gov Romney, who I would have voted for for Pres. The Gov from La., and Gov Huckabee. All excellent men that do not spew hatred. Make these people your leaders. I don't feel the way to win is to tear down your opponent but lift yourself up... what Fox News did to Sen.. Obama (SH) teeters on slander. And the Rep. in charge (SP) esp. pushed this and she is a strong Christian.. Where are her values really? I feel at this point is where Sen. McCain himself had had enough and it even took a toll on him. I talk too much but I think they need some "young blood" like the Dem have gotten but not ones who are slanderous.. Again the 3 gentlemen I spoke of will do worlds for this party.. Thankyou

Robert   November 20th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

So far the Republicans have been able to make a mess of the $700B Bailout distributions. There's no accountability or oversight for the give-away that is going on right now. The financial CEOs are reaping in dough left and right at the expense of the American people.
Someone better do something to stop this give-away before there will be no more $700B to work with left. I understand half of it is gone already. Thanks to the Republicans).
Instead of 61 % unfavorable...in my opinion that should be much closer to 100 % unfavorable!

Debbie   November 20th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Glennis, Nobody polled me either, so we negate each other's potential poll. Mine being the smarter of the two, of course...

Robert Batelli   November 20th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

That is obviously just a reflection of what happened during the elections. Wait a year or so after the Democrats are in power for a while. That poll will probably reverse significantly. People arre fickle. It's also very interesting that many individuals did not really consider or understand the issues and they were force fed and manipulated by the media. I fear that critical thinking has become a thing of the past.

CE   November 20th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

What does the GOP stand for? Intolerance, exclusion, mismanagement, borrow & spend, incompetence, hostility are a few words that come to mind. We have the worse economy since 1930 and a horrible image around the world thanks to ideology v. common sense.

GA Independent   November 20th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

I'd have a much more favorable view of the Republican party if they dropped the bigotry, fear-mongering, and religious stuff. The extreme isn't good on either side.

I saw a vote for the Republicans as a vote for Hate in the 2008 Election.

chris s.   November 20th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

We need a new party becuase the neocons bigots have taken over the republican party. First they loose the black people, then the hispanics, now their loosing that 65% white people cushion they enjoyed for so many years. Americans are ready to come together and be one nation under God. Hate and fear of the 60's has finally come to an end. Im a white ex-republican now independent. I proudly voted for Obama and will do so again.

G.R.I.T. - Girl Raised in the South   November 20th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Anne – Americans are fickle. There will only be real change in this country when the majority of Americans get back to strong moral values, and stop believing the crap that the media feeds them.

----------
Anne, I have news for you. Most Americans do have strong moral values, we just believe that we can develop them for ourselves without having them defined for us by a political party or a particular version of Christianity. Muslims and Jews and (gasp!) Wiccans all have moral values, as well. I am Christian and I will thank you to keep your moral values to yourself and not impose them upon me.

Ruby   November 20th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

We need to end this Dem vs. Rep. it's like the North vs. the South.

We are the United States of America. Let's work together.

Mark Davis   November 20th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

THE GOP the "God Only Party". To many ties to evangelicals and the Christian Right, the Christian Coalition and allowing religion to rule their guidelines.

Most Americans do not want religion mixed with their government, Yes they may vote according to faith, but even then they show that forcing religion on all people is wrong.

White male christians.... think about that... what percentage of the Christian Right is run by anything other than?

Nough said. But this will probably not be posted since it goes aginst the Christian News Network.

Charlie in Maine   November 20th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

To Justin in Phoenix,
You say "I don't really see what good the Dem's have done other than raise the minimum wage. So why are they so favored? "

The anwer to your question lies in the separation of powers. The Democrats have run congress for two years but without enough votes to over-ride George W Bush's certain veto of anything coming close to good policy they were not able to do much. ( think about what they stopped though... like putting Social Security in the stock market)
If you have the same critism four years from now I will be looking for a new party to join.

david Armendale, SF, CA   November 20th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Republicans will continue to lose elections as long as they rely on stupidity and gullibility. Sure, there's been plenty of both to go around to make elections close. But more and more Americans, many former GOPers, are seeing through the Republican party's lies and deceptiveness to realize that they've been had. Eight years of being lied to has led many who used to identify themselves as Republican to undergo a political makeover... and we're not just talking a junket to Saks Fifth Avenue or putting a new shade of lipstick on a pig.

Vicki5   November 20th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

I think, in a nutshell, the reason is because Republicans have always counted on their ability to re-write history. With technology being what it is today, people are too informed to fall for some of the trickery. Example: I think her name is Michelle Bachman, and she was on Hardball a while ago saying how the congress members should be investigated to see if they are pro-American or not. Well, last night she was on Hardball again, and she completely denied ever saying anything of the sort, despite video evidence.

Tom   November 20th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

The Dems destroyed the American economy by Barney Franks, chris Dodd and others to get the White House. The Reps did nothing but sit back and take the blame. The US Congress and gov't as a whole is so corrupt and you think the Republicans have destroyed America? OMG, all you idiots (at leaset 51% of Americans that voted for Obama) are spoon fed through the media and gov't exactly what they want. You read the polls as gospel. America is a country of the people, for the people and by the people. You have done this to yourselves.

wonderHugh_Witiz   November 20th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Hopefully, they'll suffer a short, painful political death from here. They still don't get it – they glue themselves to their radios listening to their god – an extra large drug addicted high-school graduate chomping on a cigar. His, and the rest of the republicans' cure-all is to support anything that helps the wealthy get wealthier while stepping on the necks of those seeking to create a better lifestyle. Meanwhile, no accountability is required for their failures, law-bending, law-breaking or incompetence. (How many heads rolled in the Bush administration for their untold sums of flops and disasters?)
All you hear from them now is more of the same AM radio talkshow stupidity and Sarah Palin. Never have I even seen elementary school kids set the bar so low.

Jim   November 20th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Nice poll. Wonder what people think of the Democratic Party. They pretty much suck too.

Luke Brown, Charleston SC   November 20th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Corruption + lack of vision + failure to address the issues that affect the lives of average Americans = bankrupt GOP. Good ridance.

There is so much more under the surface. GOP special interests have had a field day the past eight years. They have lined their pockets at the expense of the average working American ... and it will take years to undo that.

Phil Gramm, Geo Bush, Tom Delay, Dick Cheney, Ted Stevens, Newt Gingrich should be in jail. Mark Foley and Larry Craig were just side shows.

Obama the Messiah?   November 20th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Wow, a lot of you who didn't vote for Obama keep calling him the "Messiah"? Those of us who voted for him think that's a bit over the top. We just voted for him because we think he'll be a great leader.

But it's flattering that you think so highly of him.

tammer hilton   November 20th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Seattle Sue   November 20th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Well the Republicans have certainly earned these low ratings, they worked very hard these past eight years to achieve this rate. I personally rate them much lower. I am hearing Bush wants to change restrictions on the environment, emissions, spying on Americans and a number of other things that will hurt America. January 20,2009 can't come quick enough for me.

kishen c.rao   November 20th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

republican party is a total failure on lot of instances...one of them is BUSH...look at the economy, it is totally in shambles..gas, milk, grocery are way up...dollar has drastically plunged during this bad republican era...too many illigals here without valid visas...DOW is althe time lows...lot of people lost stocks...money...no energy independence...
meanwhile, while, republican governor's meeting, Sara Palin who just lost, IGNORANT MCCAIN TOOK PALIN, was just aiming for presidency while others flately denied and cancelled this meeting in Florida..you think, people are not watching...and Mitt Romney does not talk any sense at all...
these are the biggest problems..surrounding by big ignorants...God bless our nation, the USA

Lee   November 20th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

The Republican party must go back to the base of their base.

It has to go back to appealing to fear, hatred of anything "foreign", and away from those pointy-headed "elites" that got too much education.

"Real America" is not dead yet and with the help of Rush Limpballs, Sean Hannity and Fox News it will rise again!

Rob   November 20th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Wow, when did favorable rating mean that something is right or wrong? People are fickle. I bet the Nazi party had a pretty good approval rating in 1932 Germany.

No, I'm not comparing the Democratic party to the Nazi party, I'm just saying that these opinion polls don't demonstrate the best direction for our country, necessarily. And as for the comments about the "uneducated", that's very offensive. Just because I hold politically conservative views doesn't mean that I'm unintelligent. Likewise, just because you hold liberal views doesn't mean that you're intelligent. Before you denigrate "rednecks" you should understand what you're talking about. Interestingly, the term "redneck" comes from union labor in the 1920s (ish). Where exactly does that group fall on the political spectrum?

Adam   November 20th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

The US electorate is ill-informed, swayed by the media, and memorized by the messiah president-elect. Dems have controlled both houses of Congress for the past 2 years and have increased the margin this past election. Just look at the state of our country under the Democrat-controlled congress. Dismal.

OhioMOM   November 20th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Hmm. Comments supporting the Republican party on this thread underscore the reason the party is in trouble in the first place. Lacking a clear message and positive action, the party is resigned to being defended with attacks on the other side a 'la Kari the Genius, whose first post reveals the mind of the GOP in a nutshell.... thanks, Kari! You made our point for us!

Bill   November 20th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

As a lifelong Republican who actively supported Barack Obama, I am ever hopeful that the Republican party of Lincoln and TR will be brought back to life and replace the ugly, elitist, and mean-spirited thing that we now call the Republican party. Another step in that very positive direction would be the defeat of Saxby Chambliss in Georgia. His campaign against a great American patriot Max Cleland was beyond despicable. I am hopeful that the Republican party will reject that kind of politics and make me proud to call myself a Republican!

Brad   November 20th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

You've got it all wrong. You can thank the media's premature coronation of King Obama and the villification of all who opposed him, even other Democrats. And that message of change???? The list of cabinet appointees looks like the reincarnation of the Clinton administration. As a Hillary supporter and then Mccain, it kind of sickens me how he now "owes" Hillary and is throwing her a bone. Even more sickening, her and Bill's tails are wagging at the idea. Hillary, please stay in the senate. Don't be his puppet.

Russ R   November 20th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Perhaps it's because of their sheer Genius!

Wasn't "Drill, Baby, Drill" their primary campaign strategy chant! Where are all the Neo Con oil hawks chanting "Drill, Baby, Drill" now!!! Don't they want oil prices to plummet even further??? Shouldn't we continue to disregard the fact that the oil companies already do not invest in greater production capacity due to the cyclical nature of prices? that's a quote from one of their execs, they already admit they don't exploit the leases they already have, yet we have these idiots like Bush/Palin who think we should open our most valuable natural resources/preserves to these scoundrels.

Americans are fed up with this redneck BS. Grow a brain and use it. Give up your idiotic ideological BS you want to cram down everyone's throats.

vic   November 20th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Well, what has the republican party offered the citizens of the United States? What are their plans? Are they going to join the democrats and help to get our country back on track or are they going to continue to whine and pout and cry? Are they going to focus on 2012 or are they going to focus on right now?
Our country is in dire straits and what do they plan to do about it....fight Obamas every move or try to be a solution and help clean this mess up?
I say they will fight Obama and the democrats at every turn, then lose even more seats in 2 years.

Jeff   November 20th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Well gee, when the democratic/liberal media and hollywood constantly promotes one party as good (democrats) and the other as evil (republicans) you think it has an effect on the public?

Terence, VA   November 20th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

The GOP refuses to serve the good and the interests of the majority of Americans. They serve their own interests, the survival of the party, and the interests of the few. In my mind, the GOP simply does not work for the good of the country. I would like to see them dissolve.

Paul   November 20th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

@ Kari.

There's been entitlement for a long time – the rich getting tax breaks on dividend income.

So your last sentence would CORRECTLY read "Why work hard when you can get it for free- the REPUBLICAN way?".

But keep on voting Republican, Kari. Not everyone can have a brain.

I like the GOP mantra of lower taxes and lower spending. Problem was,Bush and McCain never talked about paying for the war. But more than that the overwhelming problem with the GOP for me is the insertion of religious views into politics. I will not go back to that party until it keeps religion views in the church and and out of politics.

Laszlo in L.A.   November 20th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

This is a marketing issue. It's branding. The Republican brand right now is represented by Sarah Palin and Joe the Unlicensed Plumber. These are not the spokespeople you want for your brand unless you are selling something to customers who are angry, divisive and dishonest. And largely rural white people. Change the spokesperson – Bobby Jindal? – modify the message and the GOP will be back.

MrRevolution   November 20th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

They will go into a deeper hole unless they move away from their right wing social values. Palin had the guts to bring her pregnant unwed teenager on the stage and be proud of her social values. Am I missing something?

I would really like someone to explain to me WHAT IS IT THAT REPUBLICANS STAND FOR? I really don't see what their platform is, and why it's relevant in this day & age? It's not Progressive, it's not beneficial to the majority of Americans, and it seems to me that they are the party of greed, dishonesty, war & fear-mongering, and less government, unless it comes down to Reproductive rights and Civil Rights & Liberties. (The we can have government intervention) GIVE ME ONE GOOD ELEMENT OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!! JUST ONE!

California Girl   November 20th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

This comes as no surprize to me. The reps are too arrogant for their own good. They are stuck in the past, rely on stirring up hate and fear, adn continue to worship at the altar of Reagan (thank you Christine). Reagan promoted the idea it was perfectly acceptable to be selfish – in fact, seemed to regard it as a virtue. This is apparent in the actions of the auto executives who were stupid enough to fly to Washington in private jets to beg for money. And it is horrid how they cater to the lowest common denominator by sneering at higher education and trying to make heroes out of idiots like Joe the Fake Plumber. Look at the way Palin conducted her campaign stops – at times, I felt I was watching a Klan rally. The reps can no longer rely on using the three Gs – gays, guns, and god – as their big issues.

Maggie from Virginia   November 20th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Kari,

Your kind is the reason repubs are disliked.

Joe Regis   November 20th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

The disconnect between the repubs, the GOP and ordinary Americans is palpable you can feel it. They will run deficits after deficits, increase the size of government, supporting people who do not necessarely need to be supported and yet all the while they claim to be for responsible government, deficits free and economics growth.

Under the repubs, the number of American children living below the poverty line increased incrementaly while they favor increase spending for the wars of opportunities that cost billion weekly.

Rob Johnson   November 20th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Only 61%? They can do better than that.

Nominate Palin in 2012 if you want that number to go higher, GOP.

Mike Dallas   November 20th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Yep, clutch those bibles even closer, that is the ticket!

Keep convincing yourselves that America is the problem and not the beliefs of the party.

Keep alienating the young, the educated whites, folks of color and just cuddle up with the rabid religious fascists, that will cause the party to grow among the deep South rednecks, which is a growing demographic you should continue to tap into.

Please!

TimMN   November 20th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Whatever! CNN please stop kicking people when they are down. I know your tainted liberal views don't afford you the luxury of bias news reporting but instead of kool-aid at least give your staff the option of water at the cooler ummmm k!

dave   November 20th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

You don't suppose that a large reason for this is the biased press do you?Check back in about 2 years when the "social experiment" we have entered into takes full effect. This "change we can believe in"is just a re-booting of the Clinton fiasco.I'm actually waiting for Monica to re-appear.

David   November 20th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

The GOP already tried to milk that "entitlement" argument and it
didn't work and it won't work now. Hey, why try to run an investment
firm or bank ethically and responsibly when you can do a sloppy unethical job of it and get bailed out anyway? There's some entitlement for you.
How about getting a no-bid sweetheart contract with Uncle Sam to
do "business" in Iraq at taxpayer expense? More "entitlement".

It's simple – the Democrats and Obama currently appeal to people's hopes, while the GOP has been appealing to their fears. The "fear" approach just got too old.

John Q   November 20th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

How about a story on how Barack's promised 'Change' is already a joke, he's just bringing back the Clinton administration thus far. You people are ruining the country!

Richard   November 20th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Bush, McCain's fear and smear campaign, the economy, and all the Republican legislators who gave Bush EVERYTHING he wanted for 8 years without any consideration for anyone else is the reason. WELL-DESERVED.

Kevin   November 20th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

This will reverse itself real quick....once America realizes what its done by putting the far left Obama-Pelosi-Reed triumvirate in place. Its gonna get bad folks...REAL bad. And the blame is squarely on the liberal congress.

Charlie in Maine   November 20th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

The Republican Party and my mesage have something in common. They are both awaiting moderation. Until they find that moderation they do not deserve a second look.

My favorite thing is when some Republican talking head says that McCain/Palin were not conservative enough. That's right Ms Flat Earth wasn't narrow minded enough that was their downfall, we better get Mitt next time.

JCC   November 20th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

G.O.P. would be a good party if we were still in the 1700's and 1800's....

They are just too outdated and that is a direct conflict with progression...

I would put my money on the CEO's for GM, Chry, and Ford being republican....no visionary plans for the future, inability to understand that the consumers are smarter now, still lost in the system, out of touch, etc......

John Q   November 20th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

CNN is a socialist-aiding evil news organization. You won Barack the election already, why do you have to continue attacking the other side? Are you filled with that much hate? Obviously that was what the dems elections and agendas are always about. You disgust me CNN.

Chris in PA   November 20th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Maybe if they stop spreading hate and try to relate to everyday people they would have a chance.

Robert   November 20th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Cut education funding over and over again, then make policies that appeal to the ignorant and uneducated...I can't believe that plan didn't work.

Joe Green   November 20th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

We live in a modern era.

You can't take a bucket of toxic waste, put a cherry on top and tell me it is a strawberry sundae.

The GOP needs to tone down its image as a mouthpiece of extreme right thinking and religious fundamentalism.

Many of the religious right believe that the U.S. Constitution does NOT mandate a separation of church and state and that we are a "Christian Nation". They pine for a Christian version of the Taliban to take over the country and mete out rough justice.

This is the same base that attends Sarah Palin's rallies and shouts out "Traitor" and "KILL HIM!" when Obama's name is mentioned.

Even the "moderate" wing of the GOP seems interested in little more than acquiring power and the doling out favors to supporters.

The fundamental Republican idea of LIMITED GOVERNMENT has been perverted by the like of Grover Norquist into a crusade to destroy government competely.

The funamental Republican idea of LOW TAXES and BALANCED BUDGETS has been perverted into TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH and DEFICIT SPENDING.

The "new" GOP is a scary thing. The proposed solutions (recruiting more from college aged voters, utilizing the intenet) will simply not work, given the odious nature of the product they are trying to sell.

Given the entrnched nature of the bigoted far-right and corrupt business interests in the GOP, perhaps it is time for a new party?

Bryan   November 20th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Bush and cheney must be indicted for their crimes.

Sandra   November 20th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

It's not the party that matters in an election - it's the person. That's part of the reason Obama won. His character and calm temperment are what the country needs.

Eric   November 20th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

The GOP hasn't begun getting what they deserve. And until after they indict their own Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bush and other lead players in the current administration for treasonous acts, they should further lose any/all decision-making roles.

Time for some apologies and groveling.

Glennis, PA   November 20th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I have news for you. I wasn't polled and I have a very unfavorable view of the Democratic Party.

Simpliticus   November 20th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Remembering the old folk tune," That's what you get for loving me!", comes to mind in reviewing this. Those who had high ratings for the GOP probably had one scam going while another fell ruinous. Only those who made money on this deplorable party rate them still as favorable while those being fleeced like the rest of the country do not favor it at all! May go the way of the Whigs even though the Whig party was far more philosophically ethical!

Kris   November 20th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

You can't push all this hate and still expect people to like you.
The Republican lies don't work any more.

Anne   November 20th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Don't worry – in 2-4 years the poll will read 61% of Americans have an unfavorable view of the Democratic Party. Americans are fickle. There will only be real change in this country when the majority of Americans get back to strong moral values, and stop believing the crap that the media feeds them.

Todd   November 20th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

The republican party has become a backwards party that, in it's current state, can only thrive on people's fears, I'm glad that I left that party in the dust and they no longer can manipulate me or my family.

Dave G, Minneapolis   November 20th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

It would be nice in 4 years to hear "the two-party system of Libertarians and Democrats". The GOP is Gone-Out Party and has sold itself to a small group of the religious right.

ben   November 20th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Nobody likes mean people and the republicans do mean better than anybody. The worst part is that they seem to enjoy it.

lm, texas   November 20th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Do you people really think there aren't corrupt people in the Democratic party as well? Has nobody noticed the increasnig trend of politicians in general being corrupt? Why must everyone be so hateful of someone whe has different values and ideas? Can we please remember that we are all AMERICANS? Nothing is every going to change if this hatred continues. I wish Americans would think for themselves, instead of seeing what they want to see in their so-called party.
While reading this blog, I just hear the same hateful words from both sides that don't pertain the actual article. This is just a place for everyone to talk trash and not actually say anything of worth. The real change can come only from us, the people. If we can't change, there is nothing any politician, corrupt or not, can do to "change" our country for the better. There will always be a divide. I beg of you to find it within yourselves to find some common ground and think for yourselves for your country, and not for your party.

CNN PLEASE POST!

Bush is really going out with a bang......

DC Observer   November 20th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Shame on you CNN for putting out one sided news. The GOP rating is quite a bit higher than the rating given to the Democraically controlled House and Senate run by Pelosi and reid. based on the GOP rating, I'd say they are head and shoulders ahead of the Democrats. Why is it that CNN cannot publish a fair and balanced report, and is always looking for ways to diminish the Republican Party.

Bob from NC   November 20th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

34% have a favorable view of the Repiglican Party? On what planet have they been living for the past 8 years. Perhaps that Texas grand jury can send Cheney and Gonzolas off to Gitmo for some " water therapy" to prepare them to give their testimony. Perhaps the results of that trial will sway a few of that 34%.

tehevo   November 20th, 2008 11:59 am ET

We already knew this, that's why we voted how we did........Republicans are crooks period.

Chris from San Antonio   November 20th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Perhaps if they went back to their small government, no nation-building, fiscal conservativism roots, they'll make a comeback.
But with social conservatives maintaining their stranglehold on the GOP, perhaps it's time to make a new party.

Thomas   November 20th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Hmmm...can you say "Karma"?

Jason   November 20th, 2008 11:58 am ET

"...down 40 percent from a month ago..."

do they mean down FROM 40 percent a month ago? I highly doubt the republicans had a 74% approval a month ago.

How about a little editing CNN

Lost in Texas FOREVER   November 20th, 2008 11:58 am ET

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the right wing and religious right have hijacked the party of Lincoln and Reagan, trying to appease the Rush, Sean, and Bills of the airwaves and have forgotten what real America wants or even looks like. America is not going to the left, nor the right, but to the center and the GOP needs to do the same. The RNC in St. Paul hardly looked like what our nation is, whereas the DNC was a rainbow of ALL the backgrounds of our fine nation. Nothing wrong with diversity and more tolerence and you can't tell me these people can't change if they really want to. Just in once session I saw a party that condemnned unwed mothers as sinners and welfare queens to one that embraced Sarah Palin's young daughter and I even saw buttons saying "GOP supports unwed mothers"! So they can change.

Rodger   November 20th, 2008 11:57 am ET

This would be a good time for the party to ask Senator Hagel to serve as National Chair. Instead of concentrating on getting re-elected, we Republicans should concentrate on doing the best job for the country and not our friends. If Republicans did the job they are capable of they would reap better approval and fell better about themselves. The country needs us. Well, most of us. Not the fascist nutsjobs. we can do very well without their 22%

Christine   November 20th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Kari,
I have to disagree with your view on a sense of entitlement prevailing in our country. While yes, it may true for some, the majority of people really would just like to have equity, not handouts.
We hold these truths to be self-evident....all men are created equal.
In essence, there should be a sense of entitlement for American citizens- don't you think?

Ex-Republican for Obama   November 20th, 2008 11:57 am ET

The GOP has become a joke. They have embraced right wing religious zealots pushing agenda's that have absolutely NO business being political talking points.

They need to start representing ALL of america if they are to survive. The day's of robbing from the poor and giving to the rich are over. The day's of murdering our sons and daughters in foreign lands are over. The day's of torture and revoking of civil liberties are over. The day's of shipping our jobs over seas are over. The day's of fear mongering are over. The day's of corruption and betrayal are over. The days of taking american citizens for granted, are over!

A big change is needed, and I don't think they have it in them to drop all the miserable policies they have become habitually attached to. To prove my point, wait and watch the remaining GOP supporters come on here and discuss the topics listed above. Watch as they slam democrats for things that happened while BUSH was in office. Watch as they deny that this country is in one of it's darkest hours EVER, all because the GOP 'JUST DOESN"T GET IT!".

RIP GOP!

Angie-OHIO   November 20th, 2008 11:57 am ET

they should start now so they can get all the back stabbing out of the way, and hopefully after that there won't be any gop left to destroy America again. they are greedy, lying ware mongers who don't think of anyone except the rich or super rich. they don't understand workig people (the ones that make this country great). they want to talk about morals and they can't even spell the word. morals do not put food on the table or a roof over our heads. so they need to come up with something that will actually help people, help themselves. we don't want hand outs but a hand up.

Briana the college student   November 20th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Kari there are teachers, firemen, policemen, social workers who will never make 250k and they work hard everyday. They deserve money more than AIG executives.

frodo   November 20th, 2008 11:56 am ET

The republicans have no convictions...They used to be the party of fiscal conservatives and have now become the same spenders as the democrats. But republicans still talk about smaller government, fiscal responsibility and lower taxes, all while growing government, spending and raising taxes...any person voting for republicans on the basis of what they say are truly misguided.

At least, we know where the democrats stand...Tax us to hell, and spend on everything.

This year, the Libertarian party saw huge growth due to there now really being only one political party...the Republicrats who are bailing out companies left and right and spending all they can get

Purple Nurple   November 20th, 2008 11:56 am ET

No surprise here. You GOP types need to drop the crazy right wingers!!

Living in a Republican state   November 20th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Unfortunately, it seems to me as the Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford doesn't have a clue as to what goes on in his own state, so why ask him about the country?

We, being 9th in the nation in HIV/AIDS cases, the South Carolina government just cut a program called project F.A.I.T.H which was the only AIDS prevention program that we had in the state, yet we need to get back to our values. Not to mention the homeless rates are soaring through roof, which has gotten worse instead of better since he has been the Governor of our state. Did I fail to mention that his mansion sits in between the Salvation Army shelter and the homeless shelter and the park where the homeless stay through out the day until the shelter opens back up at night. Our education levels speak for itself, we're always rank in the bottom. Depending on the district that you live in here in Richland county where the Governor resides determines the quality of an education a child receives, but he wants to get back to basic conservatism.

Oh, did I forget to mention that African-Americans are the majority and not the minority here in SC, but they still fly the Confederate Flag on the state house grounds.

So, please tell me CNN was it worth the time to get this governor's perspective on President – Elect Obama? Come to the great state of South Carolina and check out for yourself. You might see things in a whole new light.

I just pray that the citizens of this great state will take heed to what Virginia and the North Carolina citizen and turn this red state blue in the next elections, We seriously need a change here in South Carolina.

Abyssinian Lion   November 20th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Only the extreme right evangelicals and bigots will be left in the Republican party. They are driving moderates and intelligent minded people out of the party.

TJ Johnson   November 20th, 2008 11:55 am ET

I don't favor the 'gimme/gimme' attitude of democrats and the 'anything goes/no moral standards' attitude of liberals. We need to look more closely at the wisdom of holding onto our conservative culture that has brought us to the greatness we enjoy today. Liberalism/democraticism will destroy all that, make no mistake.

Abby   November 20th, 2008 11:53 am ET

Well earned!

Sam Schiftt   November 20th, 2008 11:53 am ET

This actually makes me happy. I am hoping the Republican party favorables go down to somewhere around 10%. That way, when 90% of the country has sold its soul to the Obamessiah, we can watch the universe-sized expectations shrivel.....and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......and shrivel......all the way down.

Briana the college student   November 20th, 2008 11:52 am ET

We didn't need a poll for this. Did you see how many states turned blue?

Christine   November 20th, 2008 11:52 am ET

I don't think this comes as much of a surprise to anyone, especially after all of the negative campaigning and diviseness during the general election. The GOP ran a poorly organized campaign and came across as angry and desperate toward the end.
In addition to that, I think that its clear that the American people have had enough of this type of politics in government. We all have real problems, and real solutions are needed in the best interest of the country as a whole- not just a select few. The GOP is looking as though preservation of the party is the goal, especially now, with such descension in its own ranks- moderate vs. neo-conservatives, religious right, etc.The truth is, in the 21st century, its time to get religion out of politics and government. It's time to step up to the identify and solve these issues with communication, ideas, and bipartisan efforts.
Religion and spirtiuality are important- yes. But it has no place in our government. That's how it was set up by our founders, and why its not working anymore.

Al, NY NY   November 20th, 2008 11:52 am ET

It's clear that the thumpers and creationists are still trying to dominate the party, even though it's against the party's best interests. If they want to continue to be the gun-totin' gay-hating, abortion-opposing party with no real issues to run on except their ideological and Taliban-like agenda, then they will continue to lose support. Oh well, good riddance I say

tom   November 20th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Justin> The Dems are favored b/c they're not the Repubicans. Also, they seem more forward-looking. The Republicans seem sort of...old-fashioned, with out-of-date policies.

Mervin M.   November 20th, 2008 11:50 am ET

The G.O.P. needs a reboot! They need to stop worshiping the late Ronald Reagan - with his now-antiquated devotion to granting wealthy people tax breaks (a Republican mainstay since his time) - and they need to dump the Christian Right! They could ALSO stop appealing to the worst in white America - a la 'Larry the Cable Guy' and Joe the Plumber - read: rednecks!

Denise Walters   November 20th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Any surprise? They got us into this entire mess, not to mention playing the lowest common denominator of fear and hate to the "less-educated".

Sophia, 23, FL   November 20th, 2008 11:49 am ET

DUH!!!!!!!!!!

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   November 20th, 2008 11:49 am ET

I think the GOP should become more fiscally conservative and stand on those principles. Those are good principles that most Americans can get behind and understand and what can attract the “bigger tent”. But, for me, the social conservatives always scare the holy moley out of me because morality has and always will be a personal choice for me. If they can exorcise the Grumpy Old Protestants and keep the Good Old Pennysavers, then I might be more attracted to the GOP.

Accountability   November 20th, 2008 11:48 am ET

The GOP is corrupt and their ideas bankrupt and repudiated...time to start over Republicans...

Ian Minneapolis, MN   November 20th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Yeah well, thats only because Palin hasn't been in the news constantly for the past couple o days

Justin W.J. in Phoenix   November 20th, 2008 11:47 am ET

I'm a little surprised that the Dem's rating is doing so well. Of course I'm not at all surprised the republicans are so unfavored. I don't really see what good the Dem's have done other than raise the minimum wage. So why are they so favored? It could be that a lot of Americans are putting faith in Obama's presidency and this is weighing positively on their view for the party.

Liberal and Proud of It   November 20th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Conservatism (same as Republicanism) has almost destroyed this nation. They (Reagan, Bush, Bush) have increased the federal deficit from 2.5 trillion to over 10 trillion so the nation is crippled in its ability to get credit in an emergency. (Note that China is not only loaning us money for our "bailout" but China is paying for its own bailout from its surplus. Communists, for goodness sake, are more fiscally responsible than American Conservatives.)

They have pushed these "free" trade agreements like NAFTA, etc. so that America no longer produces what she consumes. American manufacturing is almost gone.

America needs to stamp out Conservatism before it destroys the country.

Lisa   November 20th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Beth   November 20th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Yes, I have an unfavorable view of the GOP too, I voted for Obama. But I think the GOP still has a chance to come back, especially if the nonsense so far continues. If Obama listens to Pelosi too much, if he agrees with the auto industry bailout, if he does not do the right thing about the 700 billion (so far badly spent)... we may look at a GOP takeover in 2010 – remember the two years after Clinton took office?

Nathan,   November 20th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Someone has a favorable view of the Republican party? I think that's the real story.

Kari   November 20th, 2008 11:42 am ET

"What’s worse: 61 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of the Republican Party."

Why? Because people feel ENTITLEMENT in this country now. Why work hard when you can get it for free- the DEMOCRAT way?
