Well, the GOP was taken over by the neo-cons and turned into something that no longer resembles itself. When Bush, Sr. became the VP for Reagan, the neo-con faction began their ascent. Reagan did not care for Bush but was strongarmed into it. Do you really think Obama's choice was Biden? Come on, these people are chosen by the real power in this country. These are all lapdogs. More people in this country must remove the blinders.

Day after the election, some on the right including Family Research Council (Bear in mind these people have absolutely nothing to do with family), had a big wig meeting an decided it was John McCain and the Republican moderates who are at fault.

They then chartered a cruise ship and went on a cruise with the likes of Mitt Romney and most likely Newt to hammer this point.

They don't get it! If you don't include the rest of America in your party, this is what is going to happen. The GOP today with the evangelicals, family research council, and with Rovian politics is a narrow, bigoted group of people.

What don't you gallop on over here and ask me how I feel? When your information is being reported that is always to the left what more do you expect the poles to say? Until you start reporting the truth I will consider your Gallop poles as to be a more unbiased opinion until the enjoy your victory.

#1 Yes the Republican Party is in shambles. They brought it on themselves with arrogance, a neglect for the country's citizens, their outdated platform and then trying to disguise themselves as moderate liberals in the last election. I agree. This is old news.

BUT..

#2 Everyone likes Democrats because it is a change in party leadership at the White House and in Congress. Just as simple as they have received the goodwill, it can be squandered quickly if they start doing things that the Republicans have done as well..(i.e. not ending the war in Iraq, corrupted officials exposed, not following through on campaign promises, etc.).

Be very careful, Democrats....you'll also be under intense scrutiny. A failure to deliver could bring up the rise of a third party in 2012...oddly enough, 100 years to the day when Teddy Roosevelt ran as the most successful 3rd party candidate based on electoral college vote in recent time.

It's been eight years of the GOP thumbing it's nose at the American People. The GOP with George Bush / Dick Cheney at the helm have run this country in to the ground. When you give tax breaks to big business & oil companys, then turn to the American Consumer & say that's the breaks when they lose their homes, their jobs etc. Then it's time for a change. The GOP with George Bush / Dick Cheney at the wheel have given tax breaks to companys that take their jobs over seas. They have given money to Mexico to fight drugs, while we keep two drug enforcement agents jailed for doing their jobs. Under the GOP many People in this country can't get help with their home loans that are losing their homes, many have lost their jobs. All I hear from George Bush & the GOP is ahh so sad, that is your problem. Yet they let wall street & the banking industry run wild with deregulation, then banking industry wants bailed out. The big three auto makers need bailed out some of its due to the government letting them stay the course with out making the changes needed some of it's their own fault, but that being said, the workers at these plants need help to keep their jobs, the government can't afford to let them go belly up. They actually produce a product, they need to increase the mileage the vehicles get & change the dependance on gas to electric or hydrogen or ethonyl vehicles. But, the point is, no wonder the American People are mad at the GOP look at the mess they've created. They did it to themselfs...

The Republicans should wonder why their last convention was attended by only 5% minorities. More or less conservative is not the factor here, they need to stop hatred, fear-mongering, bullying, creating suspicion etc. Arrogance, intolerance, ignorance, and incompetence - all these are now the characteristics of the Republican Party.

Conservatism, which is the heart of the Republican party, is a failed, bankrupt and now discredited ideology. Almost by definition, conservatives do not progess or adjust their views as times change. Their only successes politically is when liberalism fails or does some really stupid things (and this unfortunately happens quite often). Reagan took advantage of liberal failures and brought in an era of conservatism. And for 30 years they have not changed at all. Bush, maybe the most conservative president ever, ran into some bad luck and with his gross incompetance exposed the dismal failure of conservatism.

As long as conservatives obsess themselves with trivial issues like second amendment rights and building creationist museums and fight or deny proven science like global warming they will fade away and just become a bad memory.

The survey results makes a good sense of the economic and political reality of this country for decades. The so called Reaganeconomics of deregulation since 1980s brought the corporate lobbyists take over the govt. policies and the economy in the hands of a few failed/greedy Wall Street managements. The results are the significant decline of economic growth and standard of living for majority Americans. The so called core values of the Republican Party is so Un-American and obsolete that the party did not show any vision for better future of this country. Like many others say these days, I say the same, "THE GOP IS IRRELEVANT FOR AMERICA OF THE 21ST CENTURY". I can' t agree more with this general perception of the voters and political thinkers. The GOP ship is sinking fast, and will go down under water in a decade or so.

What I can not seem to get over and I have friends and family who are Rep. is the aroma of hatred that seemed to burst from Christians.. I am a Christian and I truly believe Obama is a Christian.. It reflects in the simple way he treats his family. And Fox News talks con't about Obama in a derogitory way while praising Gov. Pailn. It was day after day after day. And then complain about networks being biased.. They were the worst.. And I find this to be the equilalent to what the GOP was doing...I met a large amount of Dem. while working the election who were Adv. Degree educated with high-food change jobs. Yet the Rep. make a picture of Dem. as being lazy looking for a hand-out.. You do "reap what you sow..." But then I look at Gov Romney, who I would have voted for for Pres. The Gov from La., and Gov Huckabee. All excellent men that do not spew hatred. Make these people your leaders. I don't feel the way to win is to tear down your opponent but lift yourself up... what Fox News did to Sen.. Obama (SH) teeters on slander. And the Rep. in charge (SP) esp. pushed this and she is a strong Christian.. Where are her values really? I feel at this point is where Sen. McCain himself had had enough and it even took a toll on him. I talk too much but I think they need some "young blood" like the Dem have gotten but not ones who are slanderous.. Again the 3 gentlemen I spoke of will do worlds for this party.. Thankyou

So far the Republicans have been able to make a mess of the $700B Bailout distributions. There's no accountability or oversight for the give-away that is going on right now. The financial CEOs are reaping in dough left and right at the expense of the American people.
Someone better do something to stop this give-away before there will be no more $700B to work with left. I understand half of it is gone already. Thanks to the Republicans).
Instead of 61 % unfavorable...in my opinion that should be much closer to 100 % unfavorable!

That is obviously just a reflection of what happened during the elections. Wait a year or so after the Democrats are in power for a while. That poll will probably reverse significantly. People arre fickle. It's also very interesting that many individuals did not really consider or understand the issues and they were force fed and manipulated by the media. I fear that critical thinking has become a thing of the past.

What does the GOP stand for? Intolerance, exclusion, mismanagement, borrow & spend, incompetence, hostility are a few words that come to mind. We have the worse economy since 1930 and a horrible image around the world thanks to ideology v. common sense.

I'd have a much more favorable view of the Republican party if they dropped the bigotry, fear-mongering, and religious stuff. The extreme isn't good on either side.

I saw a vote for the Republicans as a vote for Hate in the 2008 Election.

We need a new party becuase the neocons bigots have taken over the republican party. First they loose the black people, then the hispanics, now their loosing that 65% white people cushion they enjoyed for so many years. Americans are ready to come together and be one nation under God. Hate and fear of the 60's has finally come to an end. Im a white ex-republican now independent. I proudly voted for Obama and will do so again.

Anne - Americans are fickle. There will only be real change in this country when the majority of Americans get back to strong moral values, and stop believing the crap that the media feeds them.

------------------------------
Anne, I have news for you. Most Americans do have strong moral values, we just believe that we can develop them for ourselves without having them defined for us by a political party or a particular version of Christianity. Muslims and Jews and (gasp!) Wiccans all have moral values, as well. I am Christian and I will thank you to keep your moral values to yourself and not impose them upon me.

THE GOP the "God Only Party". To many ties to evangelicals and the Christian Right, the Christian Coalition and allowing religion to rule their guidelines.

Most Americans do not want religion mixed with their government, Yes they may vote according to faith, but even then they show that forcing religion on all people is wrong.

White male christians.... think about that... what percentage of the Christian Right is run by anything other than?

Nough said. But this will probably not be posted since it goes aginst the Christian News Network.

To Justin in Phoenix,
You say "I don't really see what good the Dem's have done other than raise the minimum wage. So why are they so favored? "

The anwer to your question lies in the separation of powers. The Democrats have run congress for two years but without enough votes to over-ride George W Bush's certain veto of anything coming close to good policy they were not able to do much. ( think about what they stopped though... like putting Social Security in the stock market)
If you have the same critism four years from now I will be looking for a new party to join.

Republicans will continue to lose elections as long as they rely on stupidity and gullibility. Sure, there's been plenty of both to go around to make elections close. But more and more Americans, many former GOPers, are seeing through the Republican party's lies and deceptiveness to realize that they've been had. Eight years of being lied to has led many who used to identify themselves as Republican to undergo a political makeover... and we're not just talking a junket to Saks Fifth Avenue or putting a new shade of lipstick on a pig.

I think, in a nutshell, the reason is because Republicans have always counted on their ability to re-write history. With technology being what it is today, people are too informed to fall for some of the trickery. Example: I think her name is Michelle Bachman, and she was on Hardball a while ago saying how the congress members should be investigated to see if they are pro-American or not. Well, last night she was on Hardball again, and she completely denied ever saying anything of the sort, despite video evidence.

The Dems destroyed the American economy by Barney Franks, chris Dodd and others to get the White House. The Reps did nothing but sit back and take the blame. The US Congress and gov't as a whole is so corrupt and you think the Republicans have destroyed America? OMG, all you idiots (at leaset 51% of Americans that voted for Obama) are spoon fed through the media and gov't exactly what they want. You read the polls as gospel. America is a country of the people, for the people and by the people. You have done this to yourselves.

Hopefully, they'll suffer a short, painful political death from here. They still don't get it - they glue themselves to their radios listening to their god - an extra large drug addicted high-school graduate chomping on a cigar. His, and the rest of the republicans' cure-all is to support anything that helps the wealthy get wealthier while stepping on the necks of those seeking to create a better lifestyle. Meanwhile, no accountability is required for their failures, law-bending, law-breaking or incompetence. (How many heads rolled in the Bush administration for their untold sums of flops and disasters?)
All you hear from them now is more of the same AM radio talkshow stupidity and Sarah Palin. Never have I even seen elementary school kids set the bar so low.

They still don't get it – they glue themselves to their radios listening to their god – an extra large drug addicted high-school graduate chomping on a cigar.

Corruption + lack of vision + failure to address the issues that affect the lives of average Americans = bankrupt GOP. Good ridance.

There is so much more under the surface. GOP special interests have had a field day the past eight years. They have lined their pockets at the expense of the average working American ... and it will take years to undo that.

Phil Gramm, Geo Bush, Tom Delay, Dick Cheney, Ted Stevens, Newt Gingrich should be in jail. Mark Foley and Larry Craig were just side shows.

Wow, a lot of you who didn't vote for Obama keep calling him the "Messiah"? Those of us who voted for him think that's a bit over the top. We just voted for him because we think he'll be a great leader.

But it's flattering that you think so highly of him.

Well the Republicans have certainly earned these low ratings, they worked very hard these past eight years to achieve this rate. I personally rate them much lower. I am hearing Bush wants to change restrictions on the environment, emissions, spying on Americans and a number of other things that will hurt America. January 20,2009 can't come quick enough for me.

The Republican party must go back to the base of their base.

It has to go back to appealing to fear, hatred of anything "foreign", and away from those pointy-headed "elites" that got too much education.

"Real America" is not dead yet and with the help of Rush Limpballs, Sean Hannity and Fox News it will rise again!

Wow, when did favorable rating mean that something is right or wrong? People are fickle. I bet the Nazi party had a pretty good approval rating in 1932 Germany.

No, I'm not comparing the Democratic party to the Nazi party, I'm just saying that these opinion polls don't demonstrate the best direction for our country, necessarily. And as for the comments about the "uneducated", that's very offensive. Just because I hold politically conservative views doesn't mean that I'm unintelligent. Likewise, just because you hold liberal views doesn't mean that you're intelligent. Before you denigrate "rednecks" you should understand what you're talking about. Interestingly, the term "redneck" comes from union labor in the 1920s (ish). Where exactly does that group fall on the political spectrum?

The US electorate is ill-informed, swayed by the media, and memorized by the messiah president-elect. Dems have controlled both houses of Congress for the past 2 years and have increased the margin this past election. Just look at the state of our country under the Democrat-controlled congress. Dismal.

Hmm. Comments supporting the Republican party on this thread underscore the reason the party is in trouble in the first place. Lacking a clear message and positive action, the party is resigned to being defended with attacks on the other side a 'la Kari the Genius, whose first post reveals the mind of the GOP in a nutshell.... thanks, Kari! You made our point for us!
