Sen. Hillary Clinton has been mentioned as a candidate for Obama's secretary of state, sources say.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The Democratic Senate leadership is considering a new role for Sen. Hillary Clinton should she decide to remain in the Senate and not accept the rumored offer of a position in President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet, a Democratic official told CNN Wednesday.

CNN reported last week that Clinton and Obama met to discuss the possibility of Clinton, Obama's chief rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, serving as secretary of state. Multiple sources told CNN that Clinton left the meeting with the impression that the job was hers if she wanted it.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's motivation for considering a new role for Clinton at this time was unclear, although multiple Democratic sources said Clinton made it known to the leadership prior to her meeting with Obama that she wanted a new role.

Oh no…I thought we were through with her. I do not trust her, she lies and the country has had too much of the Clintons. What are you thinking Mr. Obama?

G   November 20th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

I never trusted her and niether should Obama. First he offers her the job and than it is leak to the media I wonder whose people leak that out? NOT! And now she is not sure she wants the job after she indicated that she did want it. Why are they bending over backwards for her and creating a fake leadership role. She doesn't deserve it she and her people did nothing but undermind Obama throughout the campaign. Why should she get any special treatment? If she accepts the job than fine what else can be done. But she only has loyalty to herself and her big ego along with her husband a man I once respected. Obama should be careful and nominate people who will not undermine him and his message.

I Hate Hillary   November 20th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

She'd had better not mess things up for Barack. She's a selfish, selfish woman who doesn't deserve to be on anybody's cabinet. She's not smart, she's manipulative. There's a difference.

There's also a difference between her and Sarah. Sarah didn't know she was a drag for John McCain, Hillary does know she's a drag for Barack. She should just decline and go back to the Senate, where there are more vipers just like her.

MikenMississippi   November 20th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Hillary should have been president….you people need to wake up and quit jabbering about how bad she is…educate yourself about her by reading her books and the great things that she has done…you who mock and hate are ignorant people..educate yourselves!

Texas Trail Kitty   November 20th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Hillary won't accept as she is hoping to run for president again. I wish her luck whatever her decision is and I hope a 'no' from her isn't because she doesn't want to work for Obama. Remember Hillary, the people who might vote for you are watching. As for the Republicans who keep posting here – why don't you post to a Limbaugh blog or something? We need serious thought here, not sarcastic biggots who can't stand it that a black man is THE BOSS for the next four years.

JJ in NY   November 20th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

As a life long new yorker, hillary is a complete and total failure in the Empire State senate. All talk and very little action . Perhaps she would have done better in Arkansas .

Barackery   November 20th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Miss Center of Attention makes me sick. She couldn't win fairly so she has to suck Barack's administration dry.

She stole White House furniture and she lies. Is this really what we want?

Hillary will stink up the place. Sad, sad day.

ZSB   November 20th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

We would not have a cabinet stacked with more Clinton’s people even if Hillary Clinton was elected as a President. What a great tribute to Clinton years and what a lack of any change Obama promised. So, what’s the difference Mr. Obama, elect one more Clinton to your administration, since you for sure know that Hillary Clinton is the most able, qualified, competent, trustworthy, best prepared and far better candidate for any position including yours. Hillary Clinton would be superb SOS just by having inherent sense of duty, devotion, capability, and sheer love for our country. But, I think she should not accept the position, because the only position she deserved and fought for was taken away from her. And to think that Bill Richardson would be even considered for SOS is ludicrous. If he was able to betray Clintons as he did to protect his own interests he might betray down the road our country the same way.

This queen bee won't stop until she has sucked the life out of the "change" administration. Too bad, there were such high hopes for Barack.

First of all, she has not been properly vetted. Her husband is a pariah, and she lies. Oh yeah, did we forget that little part–she lies.

Four more years of drama, drama, drama. By the end of the 4 years I'm going to really hate her.

Still for Barack, can't stand Hillary.

Hillary Wins, What A Shame   November 20th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

The whole conversation for 4 years will be about Hillary. I have faith in Barack, but I hope he knows what he's doing. Hillary Clinton is the most selfish person on the planet and she won't change. She'll trash Barack's administration just as she trashed the primaries. She is a burn and scorch, spoiled, sour grapes kind of person and the Cabinet will have the stench of the Clintons from day one.

I hope Barack comes to his senses and starts his administration without this snake coiling around his ankles. With such high hopes for his administration, I hope it's not over before it starts. What a waste.

Veronica Richmond, VA.   November 20th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

More Clinton drama, I was hopeing Obama would keep the Clintons @ bay. I didn't vote for Hillary because she was a liar, make her SOS, there's no telling what she may do to get a 7 million dollar pay to betray our country. Did you all forget, she still owes $7 million dollars from her campaign. If Obama is as smart as I think he is, he will not offer Hillary SOS or any other job. JMO

I like my 401K statements from 2000 to 2006.

Then in mid 2006, after DEMS took over Congress and Senate, I don't like my 401K statements.

Now, there's a pattern.

Michael, Houston Texas   November 20th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

So why is it that all you idiots think Hillary is running in 2012? Don't you mean in 2016? There is no way she will run against a sitting President from her own party, and win. First she will be made to look bitter and hateful, which she will lose the majority support. She could try as an independent, but that would not work. Do you know how many people will show up just to make sure she doesn't win? More than what we saw this year. I think she will accept the SOS, Bill will be appointed Interim Senator of New York, everyone will be happy and all will be well.

JackH   November 20th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

So much for change.

SOS, just a different party.

Obama's campaign HYPE is proving to be lies.

A very large part of me wonders how Clinton, who quite possible has the most overinflated resume in the history of politics, would be of any positive service to the Obama Administration as SOS. A small part of me says trust Obama's judgement, which is the reason why I voted for him. Is this a case of keep your friends close (Daschle, Holder) and your enemies closer (Clinton)?

N.A   November 20th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

This is becoming too much of media circus and rating, now that the election is over, the media found new topic oh yeah let's bash more Hillary and Bill Clinton as soon as their name gets mentioned, most of you Obama supporters you were wishing for a Bill Clinton 3rd run, whether you like it or hate it Bill and Hillary have done so much for this country. not everybody hates them like all these puppets in the media claim. so my opinion is: Obama and i respect him and voted for him gracially ask her for the job as a way to unite the democratic party but you Obama supporters you can't help but get angry at her of course with the help of the media. so i wish that Hillary doesn't take the job otherwise you will be blaming the clintons for everything that goes wrong with Obama's administration.

Anonymous   November 20th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

With all the hype over this it might be a blessing in disguise if she found something better to do in the Senate. I blame the media for screwing this up. The media has a habit lately of trashing everything that is going on with the new Obama Administration. I think Colin Powell would have been a better choice (doubtful if he would take it) or Sen. John Kerry.

No Hillary = No Obama   November 20th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

Hillary Clinton should have been elected President and would have been elected president had the media not committed "media malpractice" by it's digusting and insulting male-centric sexist put-downs said over and over with impunity. I don't know why Obama is gloating he did not win fair and square, at all. 225 years and still no female President. Talk about oppression and discrimination.

Don   November 20th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Thank you Mark for telling it like it is. She would sell her soul to the devil for a political position. New Yorkers should be ashamed for letting her and slick Willie move there to begin with let alone elect her to the Senate. Now I know why I do not ever want to vacation in NY.

Chipster   November 20th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

"Did you forget what this woman is about?"

No, I haven't forgotten. She's still about the same things she has been "about" for decades: opportunity, education, health care, justice. She has worked tirelessly and maintained her focus on improving the lives of American families and children despite the accusations, sniping, cattiness and just plain meanness in politics. She's been blamed for her husband's misbehavior, faulted for actually forgiving him and putting her family before her pride, and accused of (Oh my!) ambition!

Still, she moves forward, trying to make the country a better place for future generations. In a time when young girls get Brittany and Paris, they can use a role model like Sen. Clinton.

Debby   November 20th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Well she deserves a good position and it seems the Clintons are still in power today by Obama's cabinet picks, which I have to say are very good because I don't believe Obama has a clue where to take this country with his own decision making.

gl, Pittsburgh   November 20th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Rachel – I have read alot of your comments. You don't like Obama and that's fine. Rachel nobody care right about now either about your ill feeling regarding Obama. So go read a book and stop your negative comments. Obama is the President so get use to it until 2016. Hilliary days are number and husband is her biggest down fall.

Silence Dogood   November 20th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

To all the sexist Hillary haters: That was just for the primaries. Obama doesn't need your hate any more so you can turn it off. Now you are commanded to like her. You will obey.

Plus Hillary is a great experienced person – he needs that.

Hillary Clinton—proven record of real problem solving capabilities, solid track record of accomplishment, remarkable intellect, incredible work ethic. ………………….and we have a an Obama POTUS. What a nightmare.

ME IN FL   November 20th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

HIllary will do a good job in any position, because she is intelligent, experience and hard working and puts her party and her country first!!

It is sad to see that many people regret giving the vote to Obama just because he is surrounding himself with cabinet members from the Clinton administration. Obama is an intelligent man, who is picking his cabinet according to experience and knowledge. These people have gone through the aftermath of Bush Sr's administration. So they are the ones that are qualified to lead us out of the economic mess that Bush Jr is leaving us with, thanks to the people that not only voted once but twice for Bush and even voted for McSame!!

When Obama said "Change" it meant in policies, economic, healthcare, enviromental, etc……. Do you really think he was going to put people with no experience??? See what no experience has costs us the last 8 yrs.

Adriana   November 20th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

I believe most of the media spin about Hillary Clinton and the Secretary of State position has been promoted by the old croonies of the Clintons! They were CONSTANTLY on every media outlet during the primary election, pushing the envelope for her. And now, they are doing the same thing all over again — every day and night they are on CNN, MSNBC, pushing hard for her to get the job! And Bill Clinton certainly had HIS OWN AGENDA against Obama in the primary! I hope the Obama Team won't fall for Bill Clinton's "willingness" to become transparent! It will be a pseudo transparency, because he is a person who will NEVER fully disclose ANYTHING about himself, personal, political or otherwise! He is narcisstic plain and simple! He is ONLY looking out for himself! ONLY if there is something in this deal for Bill Clinton, will he put his seal on it! He cannot be HONEST about anything! Barack Obama doesn't owe the Clintons one single favor! In fact, the BEST Obama can do for himself is to STAY FAR, FAR AWAY FROM THE CLINTONS!! I VOTED FOR ONE PRESIDENT! I CERTAINLY DON'T CARE TO HAVE THREE!! Keep Hillary Clinton in the Senate! That's where she belongs!!

Bill   November 20th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

A question was asked…has any Secretary of State gone on to something other than oblivion? The answer is yes. Thomas Jefferson was the nations first Secretary of State…he became the nations third President and his face adorns Mt. Rushmore!!

The Change Is There
We elected Obama to be President. The change is that President Elect Obama will be IN CHARGE. Bill Clinton will not be the President. President Elect Obama will dictate how he wants business carried on. All of the people he has chosen are well educated and very intelligent. He has surrounded himself with people who have the ability to bring in new information. President Elect Obama seem to like people who will challenge—-not merely agree for fear of offending someone. This man is VERY INTELLIGENT.

ABG   November 20th, 2008 11:58 am ET

It better be a powerful role or she should kiss the Senate good-bye!

All those Dems who asked Hillary to campaign for them must come up with a better job than junior Senator if they really want her to stay.

Hillary deserves the best position possible after all the fundraising and campaigning she has done for Democrats in the House and Senate.

BW CINCINNATI   November 20th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Every time someone bashes the Clintons, they bring up old business deals or resort to Monica. I thought after 8 years of this last group even die hard Republican would think what the Clintons are even accused of doing seems like small potatoes.
Ken Starr spent millions of taxpayer dollars, and in the end with no judicial or financial restrictions only came up with Monica.

Hillary will not use the SOS office for her own agenda. Has there ever been anyone this intelligent who so totally supported others. I like her hard work, and doing the right thing.

This would unite the democratic party, and we will have a competent person in place to clean up after the Bush/Cheney debacle,

Hilary is enthusiastic and bustling with energy to serve the nation I'm convinced, in all capacities. It's no longer about power. She fought hard for Obama to make it and could be instrumental in his ahieving his agenda that really needs not only big but also experienced heads. Patriotic as she and Mr. Cinton are, I believe her contibution will be enormous especially if she realy shows a zeal for it.

WE NEED THE TRUTH   November 20th, 2008 11:50 am ET

This was a Clinton tactical move to get what she wants, until she can run again in 2012, claiming either experience as Secty of State or leading the charge in Health Care reform in the Senate. Either way she will used one of these two items to bolster up her chances for running and winning in 2012.

Hillary and Bill are two very cunning people and believe me, this whole thing has some serious power move motives behind it.

I'm not in favor of Senator Clinton serving as Secretary of State. Just too much of her saying one thing and voting the other way. Too many of her bold faced lies on the campaign trail. Her husband's involvements and quid-pro-quo finances with foreign politicians and dubious links. It is a symbolic gesture to include her in the pool of contenders, but I simply can't support her appointment as Secretary of State. Once the Clintons' finances are combed through the incredibly obvious reasons will appear. Enough said.

Hillary Who   November 20th, 2008 11:30 am ET

She sure as heck doesn't deserve to be Secretary of State while we are striving to rebuild our international image. Doesn't anyone remember her Bosnia lies, the truth being stretched on the peace accord in Ireland, her saying Iran would be "oblitheraged" if they attack Israel, her desire to return to a "cold war strategy"!!!!

I thought America was pretty clear in the primaries when we chose Obama and again in the national election. He may owe the Clintons something even with their initial lack luster support. BUT he doesn't owe them this.

Bill Clinton's tangled web of international business dealings and political favors owed will weigh heavily on Obama's message of change and lobbists.

Clinton Supporter   November 20th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Don't you Change freaks know by now that you've been duped?

Obama and Clinton are look-alikes. Biden also voted to go into Iraq, morons. I, for one, think that Hillary's refusal to grovel before BO and "apologize" for a vote when he wasn't even in the Senate at the time. Bushed LIED, senators voted yes because Presidents usually don't have the nerve to LIE in public. If you want a pound of flesh, why didn't you all complain about BUSH instead of senators who took him and Colin Powell at their word?

Bush is out, and BO's new best friend is Powell – a bought and paid for liar. Explain that.

Obama is re-forming the Clinton Administration. Hardly anybody new, and those that are have less-than-powerful cabinet posts. BO – he knows a good thing when he sees it. Clinton, Barack's nemesis, was right all along – and they did get it done, after all.

Now, I'm happy to see Clinton people running things again. But you Change freaks must be sorely disappointed. You bought what BO had to sell. "Change."

Will the real "liar" please stand up?

Kay Langmuir   November 20th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Hi guys,
Seems this vetting process for Secretary of State is taking a while. Now there's talk of a new role for Hillary Clinton in the Senate.
I think Barack Obama has been a chess player in this from the get go. I think he knew from the beginning that the vetting process would be very onerous for the Clintons, and more than likely unsuccessful for them. But this way he gets to appear magnanimous, building bridges with Hillary and appearing to reward her for her help during the campaign. Yet at the same time he is able to distance his administration from all the Clinton baggage, and keep her in the Senate where she can still be immensely helpful to him.

You have to mix it up with experience, which means former clinton staff members. There is no one in politics that is not tied to someone or some company. Everybody has dirt including you. AJ   November 20th, 2008 10:57 am ET

She should be Majority Leader. Reid has been a dismal failure.

Reality   November 20th, 2008 10:56 am ET

What happened to elected representation? The Dems have turned the senate into a popularity contest akin to an elementary school student body election. Things were not run in this fashion prior to 2006. Ridiculous.

GObama!!!   November 20th, 2008 10:56 am ET

I think she would do an excellent job as Sec. of State. She knows most of the foreign leaders anyway. And it sets her up for 2016. This means that after Obama's first term ends and all the cabinet secrataries have to resign, he won't pick her back up again. If she does run again. This woman will be a powerhouse no matter whatever she decides to do. I was hoping John Kerry would get the job too, though.

Bob from NC   November 20th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Stay in the Senate. the last thing we need is Fox News morphing back into the "24 hour Bill Clinton's Unit Channel". She'll be dodging non-existent gunfire for 4 years. Bill Richardson's experience overshadows Hillary's 100 fold.

Gaylon Barrow   November 20th, 2008 10:54 am ET

I THINK IT WOULD BE UTTER FAILURE FOR HER POLITICAL CARRER IF SHE TOOK A POSITION OF ANYTHING TO DO WITH OBAMA. HE WILL ONLY BE AROUND FOR FOUR YEARS THEN PEOPLE EVERYWHERE WILL BE OH SO WILLING TO KICK HIS REAR OUT. THEN WE WILL HAVE A REPUBLICAN AGAIN FOR 8 MORE YEARS. NO I THINK IT IS COMPLETE DESTRUCTION THE DEMOCRATS HAVE DONE TO THEMSELVES.

Grace Needed   November 20th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Personally, I believe that Senator Clinton, who is my senator, should take up this offer in the senate. She is a self-proclaimed "fighter" for the forgotten. She is NOT a gifted diplomat, nor does she accept well others authority over her. I can certainly relate! SO, with all that former President Clinton would have to give up and she would be compromised by, plus their poor past history of polarization and raw power politics, I think it would behoove her to reject the Secretary of State to allow their old friend, who has recently been banished (which is another example of poor tone for Sec. of State) from them Gov. Richardson to step up to that plate, while she "blooms where she is planted".

LIES…….HATE……FEAR……..AND…..DIVISION?

Matt in VA   November 20th, 2008 10:44 am ET

To TrueIndependent. Maybe you should get off of "defence" and open your eyes. I HAVE lived in this country the last 7 years, actually the last 57 years, and have not made anything related to defense contracts. I have seen promises made by both sides. Consider this: in 2007, the DOW hit 14000 and unemployment was low. What has happened since the Dems have had full control of Congress? The Dow is now under 8000, unemployment is skyrocketing and homes have hit record foreclosures due to the liberal lending practices of Fannie/Freddy. Chris Dodd got a special loan, so shut the heck up about the DEFENSE contracts and look closer to home to the ones profiting by the lending policies, especially the liberals who lined their pockets with millions of dollars while running Fannie and Freddy into the ground. Until people get over this partisan BS, we will continue to make the same mistakes. BTW: A Democrat Carter admin with a Democrat controlled congress led to the worst economic crisis in the last 60 years; consider this as you watch Obama enter office. The biggest mess the Dems have to clean up is the one they are the most responsible for and so my question to you my friend is what color is the sky in your world? I am guessing rose colored.

Obviously, some people do not understand CHANGE. Change does not necessarily mean throwing out the old, it means doing things in a different way. Here are a few examples of CHANGE that President-elect Obama talked about:

Getting rid of Bush & Neocons….. check
Governing in a way that will keep the best interest of our Nation as its goal.
Respect and adherence to the Constitution of the United States
BRINGING IN TO THE CABINET THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST.
CHANGE OUR FOREIGN POLICY SO THAT AMERICA REGAINS HER MORAL AUTHORITY AND HEALS THE RIFTS WITH OUR ALLIES.

ETC., ETC.

CHANGE IS MUCH MORE THAN "NO MORE CLINTONS" ……..CHANGE IS A NEW VISION….A NEW WAY OF LEADING….. AND TAKING A ……DISASTER……. AND WORKING HARD TO TURN THINGS AROUND FOR THE GOOD OF OUR NATION!

PLEASE, OBAMA, SUPPORTERS, GIVE OBAMA A BREAK! HE NEEDS OUR CONSTANT SUPPORT. YOU VOTED FOR HIM………NOW TRUST HIM!

You need to google Obama and read about his experience. If you do, the only way you would continue to belittle the experience he has is your brain is also plastic. The man has been working to help people all of his life. When you average his age and the years he has been working in public affairs, you will be confident that he is well qualified to be president of the U.S. His wisdom is outstanding.

We all need to relax and give this administration a chance.

A few people are sick of the Clintons who have been successful yet they are the same people who enjoyed 12 years of the Bush's with glee. Give me Bill and Hillary Clinton, warts and all any day over George and George (and I mean no disrespect to George Herbert Bush) but Junior has been a disgrace and may even do jail time once people figure out exactly what his tax cuts and his running two wars on a credit card did to the economy.

pam Eugene OR   November 20th, 2008 10:39 am ET

Clinton can do a lot more if she stays in the Senate. She has earned a leadership role.
Give her Liebermans chairmanships or anything else she wants but please keep her out of this administration.
I do not trust her or Bill. They left the White house with a few million dollars. Look what they have now. Do you think Bill has earned all that money just by giving speeches? He is selling more than talk.

Hillary Clinton has been a distinguished first lady, has done a wonderful job as Senator from NY and would do an excellent job in any job she has. I don't get it. It seems that there is a failure for most to understand that Hillary is well-qualified to serve wherever she may be called…again, hopefully, she fills a United States Supreme Court seat…the equilibrium of the Court 's scales are not only out of balance, but today, they aren't even attached. This is where Obama's change policy need to be directed to – HILLARY…one of our nation's NINE elite 'higher powers'!!!!!

Sue   November 20th, 2008 10:28 am ET

Ah, so much anger at Obama. I remember when Hillary lost, we were all blasting Obama then too. But we saw the light, and the rest of you will too. America is not blind, nor "swindled," nor any of the other hateful words I have heard us called. It will be extremely difficult to clean up any of the messes Bush has left (and is still creating as we write,) but you can't honestly think that McCain would have fixed anything, can you? He would have bombed Iran before Feb. 1, and we would have all been under a nuclear cloud the next day. There's the change America needs!
Hillary is not Bill. Bill is not the devil. All this vitriol because a virile man had a few blow jobs by a woman of age, and got caught. By whom? Oh, just Republican lawmakers who were doing the same things or worse, but because Dems don't call them on it, they can do one thing and get outraged by same. Did Bill err when he hedged the truth in front of the committee? Yes, but who among you would have not done the same? These things have been going on with Presidents forever (ever hear about JFK and Marilyn?) Was he impeached? Does that make it right, no, but it's life. These people are human beings. McCain cheated on his injured wife with Cindy the heiress. Did that ever come up from Dems during the campaign? Nope. Not the issue, any more than Bill Ayers was an issue, or Sam the idiot plumber.

Terri   November 20th, 2008 10:28 am ET

How disappointing for so many Obama fans – he's picking all Washington Insiders – Vote for Change? Maybe Barbara Walters should have had Sen. Obama on her show and asked him the same question she asked Sen. McCain – "What are you going to change? You?"

It's business as usual in Washington – Sen. Clinton for SecState and President Clinton's former picks, a lobbyist (Daschle- even though he's not registered as one), a Sen. and Democratic party insider for his Chief of Staff …..just for starters….he's filling the cabinet with party favorites and all politicians – where are the experts who actually know how to do things other than run for a political office?

I suppose it's time to say "Gotcha" to the youth and other misguided folks who really believed Sen. Obama when he said "Vote for Change". But, I guess that they're probably not paying attention to the details – never did – that's too hard.

Roger From Florida   November 20th, 2008 10:27 am ET

To jrzshor:

The first Secretary of State was Thomas Jefferson. Other early SoS's include James Madison, James Monroe, and John Quincy Adams, all of whom went on to be presidents.

In the twentieth century, some notable SoS's have included William Jennings Bryan (a key figure in reforms around the turn of the century), John Foster Dulles (more bang for your buck!), Henry Kissinger, and Madeline Albright.

I've left a couple out, but yeah, a few of them are far from obscure!

Hillary should take Reid's job since he has been a terrible leader in the Senate and the Dems should look for a replacement for Pelosi. Our new President will require plenty of support from Congress to repair our nation and dealing with "leaders" who only give excuses is not acceptable. We need buldogs in both houses to reregulate our financial industry, repair our economy and balance our federal budget. Reid and Pelosi have a reputation for taking things off the table and allowing our nation to crumble without recourse. If America is to expect true "Change", leadership in Congress must be an integral part of the plan!!!

The Clinton and democrat haters are just whining again because the republicans had the White House for 8 years and proved again that they were inept. Miller   November 20th, 2008 10:16 am ET

I acknowledge that traditionally, a former Secretary of State has a difficult time making a solid Presidential run, but given her campaign achievements this year and her household familiarity with average citizens, I doubt she'd be faced with the same obstacles as those in the past. Everyone already knows that she's strong on Domestic Issues, and she has the Clinton name behind her, as well.

That said, however, I think that Hillary should take the Secretary of State role rather than being enticed back into the Senate. Eight years may as well be light years away, and I'd be surprised if she'd be able to make a viable run in 2016 regadless of her actions over the next two terms. No matter what Harry Reid promises, she will not be a ranking member of the Senate. Secretary of State is a great consolation prize, and it's her best chance of getting anywhere near the White House again.

Ann   November 20th, 2008 9:40 am ET

This new job offer seems so phony. On her losing the candidate position Reid said she would get no special treatment on her return to the Senate just like everyone else. The Kennedy surrogates ridiculed and put down her request to chair a new committee about health just about a week ago. Now all these offers – are they afraid that Hillary will taint poor Obama and all of a sudden he needs to be protected from her and they will try and woo her to keep her in the Senate away from him? Seems Daschle has gotten himself some nice plum position as head of HHS and will be working with Kennedy – two of Obama's largest backers – so why is Hillary's opinion on health so important now when it wasn't last week? If I was a conspiracy theorist I would say the good old boy's network seem to want to make the show all about Obama and will do just about anything to keep "that woman" in her place and out of the way of him. The more promises of change, the more things stay the same….

She'd be good as secretary of state.
She's a good senator.

She'd be an excellent addition to Obama's staff, no matter if she's secretary of state or secretary of another department. She's intelligent, independent, witty, politically savvy. Goodness knows that we haven't had that since General Powell left (which was a very good decision on his part — being attached to the Bushies isn't something I'd applaud on a resume).

We've got a chance for the first time in 8 years to see America be the America we want her to be. It'll take longer than 4 years to undo all the damage the Bushies did, it might even take longer given the extent of the damage both at home and abroad, but we've got a new president who has brains, ability and the opportunity to make America great again. It's definitely the dawn a better time in America than we've had in a long time.

RealityKing   November 20th, 2008 9:32 am ET

3/4's of Obama's cabinet is already old dog Clintonians.., might as well bring them back too. Defacto co-presidents, which includes Bill of course. Before acting on any of Obama's agenda, we'll look to the Clintons for their nodes of approval..

Rodney Foushee   November 20th, 2008 9:30 am ET

What substantive qualifications does Hillary have to advise and implement U.S. foreign policy? Her appointment would be a cruel joke on America.

Pete   November 20th, 2008 9:28 am ET

They live in a disfuntional house.

Maggie from Virginia   November 20th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Hillary is great, but I want Bill Richardson as SOS.

Anna, ATL   November 20th, 2008 9:27 am ET

If they were cowtowing they would have made the nominee!
She is worth her service and THEY ALL KNOW IT!

We need a strong, resilient person as SOS and Hillary is Obama's best candidate.

Or didn't anyone catch the charming Al-Queda commentary last night concerning our recent election?????
Pretty Ugly Bigoted Stuff.
Al-Queda HATES non-Muslim Everybody-Liberals too!
Yes, they kill Jews, random civilians and US soldiers but they torture and humiliate Western journalists (before they kill them!)

Hillary for SOS.

The Patriot   November 20th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Hillary is one of the strongest politicians I have every had the opportunity to observe. She should have been the POTUS, however due to our sexist, biased society (media is mostly to blame for this one), we are stuck w/ BO. However, he would do well to appoint her to SOS. That way, people can see her in action, even those self hating women out there, and if BO fails, she can run again.

Where is the change?   November 20th, 2008 9:27 am ET

I thought Obama was the agent for change. Looks like I may have wasted my vote because he is trying to bring in a "same old, same old" Clinton retread administration. Hillary most likely won't take the SOS job because it might hurt her chances to take over the big chair in 2012. She had a scare when it looked like Sarah Palin might eclipse her as potentially the most powerful woman in the world.
Hillary is about Hillary and how she can maximize her power and wealth. The SOS gig might taint her if things go bad and Barack has to ditch her for commenting on presidential matters if and when she tries to act like she's the president.

C'mon Barack, don't taint your potential legacy by bringing in the same hagged out politicians that brought us into this deep dark economic abyss.

Looking for Truth   November 20th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Hello. I used to be Rick but a far left leaning fellow has taken that name and i don't want to confused with him. I am not far right but more right middle. Just so some of you clowns would know. Especially Peter (CA) the biggest clown of all. So thanks for reading the truth

ED   November 20th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Hillary as Secretary of State? That is a laugh!!! She is a selfish single minded person, along with her infedel husaband Bill! We as a Nation need to move on, we do not need two Presidents, for that is what she would try to be! Both the Congress and the Senate need to wake up! They both need to stop helping the Corprate greed, and focus on those who really are hurting, do they greed! The American taxpayers!

Ed

Mello in New Mexico   November 20th, 2008 9:24 am ET

As great a position as Secretary of State is, I believe that Mrs. Clinton could do a lot more good for NY as well as for the Country, in the Senate.

RealityKing   November 20th, 2008 9:24 am ET

Plan B..

Monique ,Fl   November 20th, 2008 9:24 am ET

I think she just doesnt want to serve under Obama so she can run against him in 2012 but that want help our economy. We need 16 yrs of Dems to put this country back on track; 2 terms for President Obama and 2 for Hillary. We will have the healthcare reform in this term, was she paying attention to what was being express to the American people by her formal rival. I say get over yourself , step up to the plate and lets do what is right for all Americans. If he didnt think she was best qualified for the position, why would her consider her? She doesnt want the position because she is a sore looser just like John McCain.

Dixie AZ   November 20th, 2008 9:23 am ET

All the positive attention must have put a smile back on Hillary's face. I hope she goes for sos. That office would keep her in the spot light, rather than a contrived position in the Senate.

Meka   November 20th, 2008 9:22 am ET

How about "Interim President", starting immediately. Bush is still pushing for another Free Trade Bill. Also, Bush has pledged to Veto "Extending Unemployment Benefits". He has put the knife in America . . . and now 'laughs', as he Turns the Knife!

Chris from Frisco TX   November 20th, 2008 9:22 am ET

For God sakes, you Republicans, we Democrats have had to swallow your and Bushes failed policies for eight years. Do you have your heads in the sand? Do you not watch the news? Do you never read? One would think so from your comments. Obama will pick the best of the best for the positions in his cabinet. Hillary will do well no matter where she is. She wants our country to succeed and become the most admired country in the world once again. So does Obama. The mess they will take over may not be fixable, no thanks to G.W. Bush.

Mary from Sarasota FL   November 20th, 2008 9:21 am ET

I wish the people on the posts who think Hillary could take Senator Reid's place as the Senate Leader would check the rules.
She is just a Junior Senator. A sophomore in the Senate with no real pull … She works at the pleasure of the senior senators…
She would have a whole LOT more pull if she becomes the SOS.
and the rest of you people who hate HIllary Clinton and the Clintons per se: PLEASE either Get OVER IT or stop whining about it.

echeweozo   November 20th, 2008 9:21 am ET

OH NO,IM TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT HILLARY,WHAT MAKE HER THINK AMERICA WANT HER DIRTY POLITICS?GOD FORBID

60 year old white catholic woman for obama   November 20th, 2008 9:18 am ET

hillary clinton is a smart hard working dedicated woman who will be great in what ever position barack and she decide on. he is going to be the best president this country has had in a long time. we've had a few this century ie FDR, JFK, WJC and he will join their ranks. i see hope in this country again, something that has been missing these last 7 1/2 years. the world awaits his and her decision and i am so very proud of them and us again. i will be going to DC for the inauguration to see history happen so i can say "we were there". thank God the long nightmare is almost over.

PELOSI SUCKS   November 20th, 2008 9:18 am ET

I don't want her to be bo's servant. She should stay in the senate. They need people like her who work across the isle and actually get stuff done.

Striving4abetterme1   November 20th, 2008 9:18 am ET

I am sure that President-Elect Obama knows what's going on and is just letting the Media and others blab about what they think. Hillary will stay in the Senate and be a leader of some sort but not Secretary of State. I hope that President-Elect Obama makes Bill Richardson the Secretary of State and Hillary be placed in some kind of health position. After all she did say that she had to duck from sniper fire and lied about so many things when she was running to be President so her character is in question and her truthfulness is also. We are trying to get America's credibility back not keep it tarnished.

Locutus of Bama   November 20th, 2008 9:15 am ET

This Clinton unit will serve well under the Obama Administration. Should Obamamatrix 1 decide to use a Republican, the Chuck Hagel unit would be an adequate choice as well.

GLORY BURKE   November 20th, 2008 9:15 am ET

Hiliary Clinton is indeed a fantastic and fabulous professional to be in offered some outstanding role in this government. She will add much to the running of things in Washington, due to her knowledge and affability.

Any offer to her should not be perceived as bringing back Bill Clinton 's cronies to Washington, swindling or cowtowing. Barack obama offered Change from Bush,'s screw-up of things, not change from what was good hithertofore.

Photon Torpedo Dallas, TX   November 20th, 2008 9:13 am ET

She should stay in the Senate and should work with Obama. His success is her success and vice versa.

Yes We Did!

Fed Up   November 20th, 2008 9:13 am ET

Jackie in NY
What difference does it make we are screwed no matter what at this point.

Jackie, please wake up! We have been screwed for the last eight years. Is it so difficult to think positive and actually get behind someone who is truly trying to make a difference for everybody! There is a lot of hurt and pain going on in this world. Why is so wrong for the world to be optimistic about a new direction? Is it the American Way for people to suffer to find jobs and put food on the table to feed their families. Shouldn't you be able to work hard and retire and actually have money to retire on? WHAT IS SO WRONG with people wanting a better way in life, not a handout, just an opportunity! The country will be greater for it.

Obama08 but...   November 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Hey Obama, what the heck? You ran your ENTIRE campaign on change, and now it's Clinton this and Clinton that. We didn't WANT them OR their regime. What are you pulling?

Marc M   November 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Hillary Clinton is nothing but a shameless opportunist.

Her entire political career has been motivated by nothing other than her own needs and interests.

Why did she run for Senator in New York to begin with? She never lived there. She had no ties at all to the state.

Simple, She saw it as the easiest way to springboard herself onto the national political spotlight for her own agenda.

Why would you want someone to have any part in government with that mindset?

Irene   November 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Your right Jackie in NY its still a real mess no matter who he brings in. Why did the media hate George Buss so much, he said what he would do, no surprises, He will go down in History as one of the best Presidents ever. The young people of today, have no values, no knowledge of the world, the way it used to be and its very sad. Obama is a joke, change, Ha1

Alaskan Fame Junkie   November 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

You know…life is a lot easier and more rewarding when you don't act like such a whiny pessimist.

And MD, TX – it's "kowtow". And I don't think they are doing so at all. As much as I did not support Clinton's presidency bid, she is one of the strongest Dems in the Senate. It never said she was demanding a promotion…it only insinuates that maybe she is interested in being more involved in this administration. Stop seeing the terror and awfulness in everything. You will be much happier in the long run, I promise.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   November 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

She wants! She wants!

Old Shrillary still doesn't get it, does she? I'm sick and tired of the Clintons and their ENTITLEMENTS….

NO CLINTONS

Bill   November 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

I'd rather her stay in the Senate and offer pro-administration leadership on the important legislation that will be coming up. I also believe, that despite all the talents and gifts that HRC would bring to the state department, Gov. Bill Richardson would still be a better choice.

marcus   November 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

I think she is the best person for the job, it will help him politically in the future to have her in that post. I think she will be a very good seceraty of state.

arc, Lugano CH   November 20th, 2008 9:10 am ET

Hilary Clinton would be a very strong choice for Secretary of State. But there are others too. However, in the time since June, and in the future will Hillary Clinton and her Hillaryland supporters be able to accept that the world no longer revolves around her and them and work with President Obama on carrying out his agenda?

Artrina   November 20th, 2008 9:09 am ET

As a NY resident who believes Senator Clinton has done a lot of good for NY, I hope she stays in the Senate. As a USA resident I hope she does become Secretary of State as she'll do a lot of good for the country. Either way, I win.

mike   November 20th, 2008 9:09 am ET

"although multiple Democratic sources said Clinton made it known to the leadership prior to her meeting with Obama that she wanted a new role."
People in Hell want ice water.

Obama08 but...   November 20th, 2008 9:08 am ET

Please not Secretary of State
Please not Secretary of State…..

G   November 20th, 2008 9:07 am ET

I think Hillary would do an excellent job being the Secretary of State.

Carrie Pa   November 20th, 2008 9:06 am ET

God, I don't trust this woman!

Rachel   November 20th, 2008 9:06 am ET

Clinton haters in 1..2..3…

All these unnamed sources is just bull. It's probably beign all orchastrated by Obama. He probably never thought bill would agree to vetting or that Hillary would want the job. Now he needs to do something to stop her from becoming the SOS quick call Harry Reid make her an offer. Obama is full of drama either publicly offer her the job or offer it to someone else just stop it.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   November 20th, 2008 9:04 am ET

I know every media source has HRC moving right into the Sec. of State Position, but I don’t think that is where she wants to be. It doesn’t make sense for her politically. The last Sec of State that moved to the Presidency occurred 152 years ago (thanks Hardball). In the Senate, she has the best of both worlds, so to speak. If Obama succeeds, she can say that she worked diligently with Team Obama to ensure his legislation was enacted and that his agenda was became law in 2016. If Team Obama struggles out of the gate, she can say that she is the alternative and pull a Ted Kennedy and run in 2012. You can run as an outsider when you are an insider…

Nat   November 20th, 2008 9:04 am ET

Take a breathe, you two. The world will keep on turning. Obama hasn't even been given a chance yet and even if he does turn out to be a horrible president, we've survived them before. Jackson, Hoover, GEORGE W. BUSH!

Doug R.   November 20th, 2008 9:04 am ET

MD, TX…America certainly was swindled…under the very worst President in our history, George Bush. What a joke he was (among many other things).
Hillary should replace Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader.

Michael watching from Canada   November 20th, 2008 9:01 am ET

America will be well served no matter what Hillary decides to do.

MD, TX   November 20th, 2008 8:58 am ET

Amazing that the democrats have to cowtow to this woman. This is the "leadership" that Americans elected into power? What a horrific joke. America has been swindled.

Jackie in NY   November 20th, 2008 8:58 am ET

What difference does it make we are screwed no matter what at this point.
