Watch Mukasey collapse while giving a speech Wednesday night.

(CNN) — U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed while giving a speech Thursday at the Federalist Society dinner at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington.

Mukasey, 67, was giving a spirited defense of the Bush administration's legal policies when his speech began to slur and he lost track of his thoughts about 30 minutes into his talk. Seconds later, he became rigid and then began to slump.

Mukasey was rushed to George Washington University Medical Center, said Peter Carr, a Justice Department spokesman.

"The attorney general is conscious, conversant and alert," said Carr. "His vital statistics are strong and he is in good spirits.

To all the satanic bloggers on this site: REMEMBER that the AG is a father, grand father, husband, uncle, brother, a fellow American etc. How would you feel if other Americans wish you the same? Get well soon AG Mukasey!

Ken in Dallas   November 21st, 2008 2:11 pm ET

So Mukasey's an old man and he had a stroke. It doesn't make his legal positions endorsing the behavior of the Bush administration defensible.

I don't know whether or not defending Bush's crimes causes him stress, though I observe that this is what attorneys do every day. Likely he just had an unlucky day. The fact that he was lucid shortly after he woke up is a very positive sign.

They haven't announced a diagnosis because a stroke is a disabling illness and he would have to be replaced, at least temporarily.

Get well soon   November 21st, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Some of you just don't get. This is not a rockect science. Is a human that fell ill.Regarless of his support to his Boss, we as American s must not forget to pray for our enemies. This platform is for ya'all to wish him well and nothing more.

Biff   November 21st, 2008 1:55 pm ET

People… this is a man we are talking about.

Feel better soon.

An Independent Hillary   November 21st, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Hope you are feeling better, Mr. Mukasey. How awful it was to watch this on the news last night!

beckley   November 21st, 2008 1:46 pm ET

divine intervention?

jonny   November 21st, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Sounds like God struck him down for his evil lies.

Ken   November 21st, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Ah, Noah. Good to see you continuing to post your special brand of delusion. After reading your post, I was curious, so read through many of the other comments here, and guess what? I didn't see a single poster expressing 'joy" at Mukasey's callapse. There were a few snide comments about his political leanings and abilities in general, but that is a far cry from expressing joy at his plight. Clearly nothing more critical and cynical than what was IN FACT posted on these blogs by you idiots when Kennedy's condition was a story.

So actually, it is not "us liberals" who are disgusting. It is you rightwingers who are the disgusting ones…..making up stories and lies, and feigning shock at slights that don't exist. But let's face it that is nothing new for you neo-dimwits. You and your ilk are quite the drama queens, and you are clearly bad losers from the beating your head drama queen took at the hands of the electorate. Go back under your rock before something falls on you. I would call you a hypocrit, but that does not quite capture it.

Pat Pa.   November 21st, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Why are some of you people so mean and nasty ? The man has a medical problem. This is America and just because someone doesn't agree with you does not mean that you have to wish bad things on them. Remember, " what goes around, comes around ".

I personally cannot stand Bush, to the point of feeling physically sick when I see him or hear his voice, HOWEVER, I don't wish bad things on everybody connected with him.

Geezz !!

Milhouse van Houten   November 21st, 2008 1:12 pm ET

As much as the inevitable comments on this happening due to his
"spirited defense of the Bush administration's legal policies",these kind of events clearly show the toll taken on individuals who serve in the public domain and should not be made light of.

Apples for sale   November 21st, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Get well sir.Hiding the truth is a very strenous job.

Will18E   November 21st, 2008 1:04 pm ET

This guy obviously can't physically handle the job.
We are a nation "at war"
He should he told to resign. He can't serve the American people, as a non-elected person, from a bed.

Helene   November 21st, 2008 1:01 pm ET

That is what happened when you are waterboarded !

Daryl from Seattle   November 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

As a politician, Mukasey sucks and his support of Bush and Cheney has affected millions of people negatively. I'm a firm believer that you reap what you sow and that bad karma can come back in any form. But…..as a human being I would rather see it be in the form of legal punishment, not a physical illness. I hope he gets better.

cool onlooker   November 21st, 2008 12:43 pm ET

It was scary to watch the tape on CNN this morning. Politics aside, wish him well soon enough to get back to life.

We are lucky to have elected a young leader. Who says age does not matter? Who says health condition does not matter?

Anonymous   November 21st, 2008 12:43 pm ET

I wish Mr. Mukasey well, on personal level.
However, man of his age, known non-drinker, does not slurry his speech, sway and collapse, and later being given clean bill of health!
It is a stroke, even if it's minor. He should had transfered his responsibilities.

Helen, VT   November 21st, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Mr. Mukasey, you are doing a wonderful job. Democrats are quiet after you took over. I wish you well. To add to it, George Bush have appointed smart and experienced persons to his cabinet. barack cannot find any decent person to support his policy so he has decided to take in everybody from Clinton can including Hillary. What a change. Our markets are going down the toilet and Barack is silent. He cannot even appoint a treasure secretary so that people can have a direction and gain confidence in te wall street. Barack is responsible for these chaos.

David   November 21st, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Some of your comments absolutely disgust me. Just remember, what goes around comes around and for those who are making fun of this serious situation, your day will come. It makes me sad to see the lows people will stoop to over politics.

Get well soon, Mr. Mukasey!

Don_N   November 21st, 2008 12:32 pm ET

"Mukasey, 67, was giving a spirited defense of the Bush administration's legal policies when his speech began to slur and he lost track of his thoughts . . ."

I hope he recovers fully.

It's interesting that he was defending the Bush legal policies as he suffered his disability.

Did I say that? Heck no! It is an urban legend.

Jen   November 21st, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Real nice, people…. A man has a stroke, and it's all of a sudden "payback" or "he gets what he deserves". It is so scary that some people actually think that way. I am a Republican supporter, but I would never wish anything like that on a Democrat. Please, grow up.

SOUTHERN HOTTIE   November 21st, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Even though he was defending a twerp–erm, Bush–I too hope he gets well soon.

liza   November 21st, 2008 12:30 pm ET

He suffered a stroke….can't tell how serious….but it looks like that's what happened….why does he look older than 67? Someone mentioned term limits in the White House…their should be age limits too…When you get up in age, there are some things you just shouldnt be doing… (driving is one of them, in my opinion…!)

California Gold   November 21st, 2008 12:25 pm ET

I'm glad to hear you are doing better Mr. Mukasey. It was very scary to see the video footage.

Ken   November 21st, 2008 12:21 pm ET

I'm glad to hear he's alert now. It would be the first time since his confirmation.

wait!   November 21st, 2008 12:20 pm ET

we want to see you on the other side of justice.

don't collapse until JUSTICE is done!

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   November 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

The AG was sucking air after his remarks to the Federalist Neanderthals because he was overwhelmed by the fundamental intellectual dishonesty of the whole "originalist" revision of constitutional interpretation espoused by blowhards like Scalia, and he swooned as he contemplated the paltry lack of support for this bogus "wedge-issue" theory developed by right-wingers in the early 1980s.

PL   November 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Do any of you think Bush poisoned him??

Dave in NYC   November 21st, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Divine intervention! Let it be known, for anyone who has the audacity to defend the Bush administration's so-called "legal policies!"

earle,florida   November 21st, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Poor soul, just another victim of this diabolical administration!

geraldine   November 21st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

yup – God's punishment to him for being a Republican. Shameful and ridiculous – these comments are the kind of tripe that Jerry Fallwell spews about catastrophies that impact liberals.

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   November 21st, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I have watched that video several times, and I agree with CNN's Dr. Gupta that was some kind of a stroke, even a TIA (mini-stoke). I don't think it is just a case of fainting.

Whichever, too bad it happened. And to one poster who made a remark about this guy needing term limits, I think you might be talking about is age. Age 67 is NOT old these days, folks. McCain was going to turn 73 six months after he got into office had he beat Obama.

Mel   November 21st, 2008 11:56 am ET

He fainted while praising the current regime. I think his body would not allow him to continue. Saying Gitmo has stopped attacks? Our brave men and women on the ground have stopped attacks. Get well soon.

Dorothy, Kansas   November 21st, 2008 11:51 am ET

Why isn't the retirement age extended to politics?! Why are these old people allowed to practically die in their positions? They are too old and this is ridiculous! After a certain age there should be a cut-off point and they should be required to turn in their congress pin! I'm so glad we didn't hire a 72 year old president! Wake up people! These men are too old, get them out!!

Kate   November 21st, 2008 11:36 am ET

Get well, AG! Take it easy. It's a tough job and you need a break.

Iowa Mom   November 21st, 2008 11:34 am ET

Aw, I hope he gets better soon! I hate seeing things like this happen to anyone, no matter if I dislike them or not.

Jon   November 21st, 2008 11:27 am ET

To those of you making the predictable "he fainted because of [fill in the blank anything to do with Bush]" comments:

You are low-lifes.

Linda - WI   November 21st, 2008 11:18 am ET

Drunk? I don't think so because he was speaking just fine prior to his collapse. Like others suspect, I'm thinking he could have had a small stroke. Glad he's feeling better today.

Carol   November 21st, 2008 11:16 am ET

I believe someone needs to look at term limits in Washington, some of these people are way beyond the point of being useful.

Sarge in Florida   November 21st, 2008 11:16 am ET

God is paying him back for covering up the Bush/Cheney/Rummy LIES..I would suggest that all the others who have LIED for Bush repent immediately…GOD is watching this country. Was there a priest nearby when Mukasey collapsed?

Noah   November 21st, 2008 11:16 am ET

You Liberals are disgusting. You find joy in the news of a Republican collapsing yet just a few months ago when Ted Kennedy fell ill you were beside yourselves and called for everyone including Republicans to pray for him. Hypocrites.

Saad from NJ   November 21st, 2008 11:15 am ET

Sincerest Well wishes to you AG… but please refrain from doing what you were doing when you collapsed. Not because I don't want you to be doing 'THAT' but because if you do, it'll happen again and believe you me, there is enough bad news in the market, we do NOT want to hear about you collapsing again. Once again, sincerest well wishes for you and your family sir.

Just another CNN poster   November 21st, 2008 11:12 am ET

Fainting spell my butt. You don't lose your ability to find and form words from a fainting spell.

Even if it was a mini stroke, they still can't be honest.

All that aside, I wish him and hope he gets better soon.

Matt in Dallas   November 21st, 2008 11:10 am ET

Bring back Alberto Gonzalez to fill in before he's formally indicted for obstruction of justice. The U.S. has the largest prison population in the world. The Bureau of Prisons budget has increased by 2000%. Dick Cheney has invested heavily in the Vanguard Group, an investment management company with substantial investments in private detention centers. Some of these prisons have been cited by human rights groups for engaging in cruel treatment of inmates, that includes torture. You do the math. It ain't all that fuzzy.

Read some report that stated he had a fainting spell. That seems highly unlikely. At a minimum, the man probably had a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attach): temporary low blood flow to his brain secondary to narrowing in his carotid artery(s). I would hope his doctors would study his corotids to rule out corotid disease. It would not suprise me if he doesnt have some artherosclerotic placques in either of them that resulting in this "fainting spell."

Nice that some people have such really good health care benefits. People have babies and are sent home within an hour. A friend had a mastectomy at 9 am and she was home by noon.

Don't we provide nicely for our government official's health care? Low blood sugar or old age for them gets free overnight stay.

I work for Ford Motor Co as a manager. Here is the secrets that the union and Ford executives agreed to:

1. The UAW workers get 90% of their salary with full medical benefits, if they are laidoff. All the layedoff employees need to do is volunteer in their community 5 days a week. I investigated most of the employees and found they are not showing up for the volunteer work.

2. UAW employees salary is $25 to $30 an hour Most or not working. They are stand around talking and hiding from their supervisors. Ford do not care about the customer just keeping the uaw happy.

3. Do not bailout or loan the money. Ford executives will take the money and retire.

"Mukasey, 67, was giving a spirited defense of the Bush administration's legal policies "

Well, no wonder he fainted. That's more than any human could possibly accomplish. The waves of irony and fraud must have overloaded his system. I don't blame him – the amount of evil in the Bush Regime could overcome any normal man.

While I hope he has a smooth recovery, has anyone ever met a man of 67 who was on top of current world views and relevant to today's ideals? Didn't think so.

The Bush Regime MUST be tried for war crimes and high crimes against the American people, if not the World Population.
