Attorney general collapses giving speech; he's alert in hospital

CNN

Watch Mukasey collapse while giving a speech Wednesday night.

(CNN) - U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed while giving a speech Thursday at the Federalist Society dinner at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington.

Mukasey, 67, was giving a spirited defense of the Bush administration's legal policies when his speech began to slur and he lost track of his thoughts about 30 minutes into his talk. Seconds later, he became rigid and then began to slump.

Mukasey was rushed to George Washington University Medical Center, said Peter Carr, a Justice Department spokesman.

"The attorney general is conscious, conversant and alert," said Carr. "His vital statistics are strong and he is in good spirits.

He fainted while praising the current regime. I think his body would not allow him to continue. Saying Gitmo has stopped attacks? Our brave men and women on the ground have stopped attacks. Get well soon.

I have watched that video several times, and I agree with CNN's Dr. Gupta that was some kind of a stroke, even a TIA (mini-stoke). I don't think it is just a case of fainting.

Whichever, too bad it happened. And to one poster who made a remark about this guy needing term limits, I think you might be talking about is age. Age 67 is NOT old these days, folks. McCain was going to turn 73 six months after he got into office had he beat Obama.

yup – God's punishment to him for being a Republican. Shameful and ridiculous – these comments are the kind of tripe that Jerry Fallwell spews about catastrophies that impact liberals.

Divine intervention! Let it be known, for anyone who has the audacity to defend the Bush administration's so-called "legal policies!"

The AG was sucking air after his remarks to the Federalist Neanderthals because he was overwhelmed by the fundamental intellectual dishonesty of the whole "originalist" revision of constitutional interpretation espoused by blowhards like Scalia, and he swooned as he contemplated the paltry lack of support for this bogus "wedge-issue" theory developed by right-wingers in the early 1980s.

I'm glad to hear he's alert now. It would be the first time since his confirmation.

He suffered a stroke....can't tell how serious....but it looks like that's what happened....why does he look older than 67? Someone mentioned term limits in the White House...their should be age limits too...When you get up in age, there are some things you just shouldnt be doing... (driving is one of them, in my opinion...!)

Real nice, people.... A man has a stroke, and it's all of a sudden "payback" or "he gets what he deserves". It is so scary that some people actually think that way. I am a Republican supporter, but I would never wish anything like that on a Democrat. Please, grow up.

"Mukasey, 67, was giving a spirited defense of the Bush administration's legal policies when his speech began to slur and he lost track of his thoughts . . ."

    I hope he recovers fully.

It's interesting that he was defending the Bush legal policies as he suffered his disability.

Did I say that? Heck no! It is an urban legend.

Some of your comments absolutely disgust me. Just remember, what goes around comes around and for those who are making fun of this serious situation, your day will come. It makes me sad to see the lows people will stoop to over politics.

    Get well soon, Mr. Mukasey!

Mr. Mukasey, you are doing a wonderful job. Democrats are quiet after you took over. I wish you well. To add to it, George Bush have appointed smart and experienced persons to his cabinet. barack cannot find any decent person to support his policy so he has decided to take in everybody from Clinton can including Hillary. What a change. Our markets are going down the toilet and Barack is silent. He cannot even appoint a treasure secretary so that people can have a direction and gain confidence in te wall street. Barack is responsible for these chaos.

I wish Mr. Mukasey well, on personal level.
However, man of his age, known non-drinker, does not slurry his speech, sway and collapse, and later being given clean bill of health!
It is a stroke, even if it's minor. He should had transfered his responsibilities.

It was scary to watch the tape on CNN this morning. Politics aside, wish him well soon enough to get back to life.

We are lucky to have elected a young leader. Who says age does not matter? Who says health condition does not matter?

As a politician, Mukasey sucks and his support of Bush and Cheney has affected millions of people negatively. I'm a firm believer that you reap what you sow and that bad karma can come back in any form. But.....as a human being I would rather see it be in the form of legal punishment, not a physical illness. I hope he gets better.

This guy obviously can't physically handle the job.
We are a nation "at war"
He should he told to resign. He can't serve the American people, as a non-elected person, from a bed.

As much as the inevitable comments on this happening due to his
"spirited defense of the Bush administration's legal policies",these kind of events clearly show the toll taken on individuals who serve in the public domain and should not be made light of.

Why are some of you people so mean and nasty ? The man has a medical problem. This is America and just because someone doesn't agree with you does not mean that you have to wish bad things on them. Remember, " what goes around, comes around ".

I personally cannot stand Bush, to the point of feeling physically sick when I see him or hear his voice, HOWEVER, I don't wish bad things on everybody connected with him.

    Geezz !!

Ah, Noah. Good to see you continuing to post your special brand of delusion. After reading your post, I was curious, so read through many of the other comments here, and guess what? I didn't see a single poster expressing 'joy" at Mukasey's callapse. There were a few snide comments about his political leanings and abilities in general, but that is a far cry from expressing joy at his plight. Clearly nothing more critical and cynical than what was IN FACT posted on these blogs by you idiots when Kennedy's condition was a story.

So actually, it is not "us liberals" who are disgusting. It is you rightwingers who are the disgusting ones.....making up stories and lies, and feigning shock at slights that don't exist. But let's face it that is nothing new for you neo-dimwits. You and your ilk are quite the drama queens, and you are clearly bad losers from the beating your head drama queen took at the hands of the electorate. Go back under your rock before something falls on you. I would call you a hypocrit, but that does not quite capture it.
