After dropping out of the presidential race, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who had worked in Bill Clinton's administration, endorsed Barack Obama.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico is a serious contender for commerce secretary in the Obama administration, two sources close to the transition said Friday.

The same sources, however, cautioned that Richardson could be tapped for another senior post as well. They do not consider Richardson's appointment to the Commerce Department to be a done deal.

Richardson, 61, was a candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Currently in his second term as New Mexico's governor, he previously served as ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary in the Clinton administration.

Obama only floated the idea of Richardson as Commerce Secretary after Penny Pritzker took herself out of the running and he realized that he is screwing over Hispanics with no important Cabinet posts. Hispanics wont be fooled twice.

Tex, Dallas, Tx   November 22nd, 2008 2:47 am ET

I am deeply disapointed that Gov. Richardson was not the pick for Secretary of State.Richardson has a life time of experience and HIllary will bring us a life time of hollywood drama.God help us.

Richard L McVay   November 21st, 2008 9:03 pm ET

It's time to wait and see. There are many big problems left from the Bush time in office. It will take at least two years to make a dent in the debt and the unemployment caused by the sacking of the national treasury. Strange how all the problems came to light after a new president was elected.

Nicholas from Nigeria   November 21st, 2008 9:00 pm ET

If you think Obama picking familiar face is not change, then you got it because the change he promised is change of policies and not change of washinton faces.

All you need do is watch how his 100days in office will be like before judging this guy. As for me i dont care if he picks a mad man from iran for as long as his administration is able to deal with the world challenging issues and make america more economically viable.

Absolutely!

Change is coming – it just isn't what some expected – one man's change is another man's – SURPRISE!!

The man (OBAMA) is doing his job and doing it well – he has vision and will see it through.

This man deserves as high a post as can be offered him.

Long   November 21st, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Some of you have this primitive notion that Richardson owes some loyalty because he served in Bill Clinton admin. Bill chose him for the job because he believed he can fullfill his duties. That does not mean that you have to serve him or his family for the rest of your life. That a petty mentality.

Having said that Bill Richardson endorsed the then Senator Obama because he believed he was the bet candidate and he justified today because American citizens also believed so.

Thinks own your own instead of following Carville like a servant. Hillary has lost so get over it. SHE HAS

Ridgeway   November 21st, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Boy there's a genius. Commerce secretary? Crap, New Mexico's economy is in the dumps. He hasn't done anything. But then neither has his new boss.

diane08   November 21st, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Unfortunately Obama will be criticized no matter who he picks. If he chooses Washington outsiders, he'll be bashed for choosing inexperienced people at a time when our country needs strong leadership.
If he chooses an experienced staff (aka: Ex-Clintonites), he'll be bashed for abandoning his promise of Change.
I say, Choose the best person for the job REGARDLESS of whether they worked for Clinton or not.

The REAL change should reflect in POLICY, not PEOPLE.

ree   November 21st, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Well, Obama has to give Richardson something. I am glad it's not what Richardson wanted because he does not deserve SoS.

I really want to know where all the change is. Glad to see Obama is getting people who are experienced because we all know he has none.

JAbbey   November 21st, 2008 7:47 pm ET

I can't believe the Obama Administration is selecting a person as unqualified as Bill Richardson for such a critical position given the state of our economy. While Richardson has managed to rack up an impressive list of titles, if you look at what he has actually accomplished in his various roles, you come up with a big zero. Case in point: the state of NM is in far worse shape since Richardson has been in power from an economic, social and educational perspective. Moreover, he has no experience to speak of in the area of commerce.

It seems as though Richardson, who is only part-Latino, was selected presumably to appease the Latino vote. Ironically, the Latino vote does not support Richardson (as seen in the most recent Presidential campaign.)

Beyond Richardson's incompetence, let's not forget all the skeletons he has in his closet from his "extra -curricular" activities.

While I support Obama and most of the choices he has made thus far for his cabinet, I absolutely do not support having Bill Richardson as part of the administration. In every way, Richardson is a bad choice for the Obama and our country

He is a bad choice for any cabinet position....look how he treated the clintons...everyone needs to watch their back.. hillary showed you can count on her to be loyal..so much for bill richardson

Rick Freezy   November 21st, 2008 7:27 pm ET

There's a few things i would like to throw out here. One. I think Richardson would make a good secretary fo state or Director of Homeland security. I wish Pelosi could get replaced by hillary. I would like to see Powell as secretary of state myself. Or secretary of defense for that matter. I personally hope he's not trying to copy the clinton administration. Would show me an early sign of maybe not being as qualified as I had hoped. But I'm gonna stick with my having faith in the man. Cuz frankly the only thing i think that can stop him from greatness is his own ego.

Keith in CA   November 21st, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Clinton as Secretary of State is the first Obama selection I have a problem with. Richardson would be a far better choice. He has more hands on experience, brings less drama, and can be trusted to support the president and not his own agenda. Sorry, I still have trust issues regarding Clinton.

BILL RICHARDSON IS THE MOST VERSATILE MEMBER OF THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION. Richardson can easily step in and successfully lead the following appointments:

[1.] – Vice President of the United States,
[2.] – White House Chief of Staff
[3.] – Secretary of State,
[4.] – Secretary of Commerce,
[5.] – Secretary of the Interior,
[6.] – Secretary of Labor,
[7.] – Secretary of Housing and Urban Development,
[8.] – Secretary of Energy,
[9.] – Secretary of Homeland Security,
[10.] – Secretary of Health and Human Services

Hillary has many talents but "leader" is not one of them. I can just see all of the confusion at the State Department when she gets there. She doesn't know how to organize or unite her team behind her. Bill Richardson would have been a better choice for that spot. We shall see how this plays out. I hope it works but do not have a lot of confidence in her people skills.

Everyone should realize that any democrat who has been around for any length of time has ties to clinton, if he were to pick a bunch of new young faces, the same people would be crying about the lack of experience. Wait till he actually becomes president and starts putting forth policy before you start to criticize his legacy. The change will be in his thought process and policies, so lets wait to see what happens first.

Linda   November 21st, 2008 5:59 pm ET

Oh goodie, Richardson in charge of Commerce. Mr. Tax the people and give to Corporations.

His expensive outsourced Choo Choo and now the state is about 600 million SHORT.

So of course, his bright idea is to start cutting state staff, where they've have freezes and are short staffed already with people doing 2 and 3 times the work.

The man who promised to have transportation pay for the train and now they just increased sales tax to pay for maintenance.

The man who gives tax dollars to businesses to contributions.

The man who builds a spaceport on wide open space New Mexico, but instead rents the land from two ranchers.

Obama will dEFINITELY be a oner term president.

I see that Richardson will probably be upset, but then so were all those who believed he was a loyal supporter before he decided to go with Obama and hitch his wagon for possible VP spot since it was mentionned about the first black and possible first Hispanic VP. . He'll get some job I am sure for his loyalty but as far as me, personally, he will never be the man I thought him to be after he did what he did.

Canadian POV   November 21st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Clinton is a far better choice for Sec of State than Richardson is. From here in the outside world, the Clintons are respected and taken very seriously. Richardson is suited for other top jobs and should be in the cabinet. Obama is on the right course. For all the people griping about him tapping into the Clinton brain-trust, I simply don't know what you expect. Do you want neophites in the top jobs when there is so much turmoil around the globe? He needs the best and brightest and that is the like he is surrounding himself with. Give the man a chance before tearing him down. You kept Bush in the WH when it was clear what an idiot he was during the 2000 campaign and where was the outcry when he surrounded himself with the corrupt people from the Nixon era? Moreso where was the outcry when Bush & Co were destroying your country? Now look at the mess they are leaving and the utter contempt they are showing with the orders and regulations that they are ramming through now.

CanIcallyouJoe   November 21st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

I don't have any ill will towards this guy – and that is saying something when talking about a politician.

But, here come the Repubs. He's not an old rich white guy who's family used to own slaves and now owns either a bank or an oil company – so they're all upset.

I'd favor to see him as Commerce Secretary, but I'm going to do the Republican thing this time and put in a hate vote: I'd rather see him in the Secretary of State position than Hillary Clinton.

Cody   November 21st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

AEB in Santa Fe   November 21st, 2008 5:16 pm ET

Does anyone remember how as Sec of Energy, this man was sued for leaking Wen Ho Lee's name to the press in an attempt to smear Dr. Lee? How he then thwarted efforts to uncover the full extent of Chinese nuclear weapons espionage at the National Laboratories? How he awarded a plum federal job to his bodyguard? How his girlfriend was given a DOE job to get her out of the state? How he waited till after the Hispanic rich Texas primary won by Clinton, to endorse Obama?
We can do much better than this!

I must put my two cents in this discussion to you who are complaining about every choice. Are you guys thinking about the broblems this country is faced with? Do you not think it makes sense for Obama to bring his well trusted people like Richardson in the area that is most talked about( the economy) if you are not thinking, his success or faileur hangs on how well he puts together the team that drives the economy of this great nation, it is not foreign policy right now. so thing about and be happy that he is bringing his mosted trusted people around.

I am not a citizen but you all ned to shut up a little bit and see what a team he is putting together.

I'm sick of people saying "where's the change."

The change is simple: a change from Bush and failed Neo-Conservative policies.

Richardson is an able and competent statesman. He will excel regardless of the cabinet position he's offered. Excellent choice.

I really like Richardson. Frankly, I think he would make a better Secretary of State than Hillary, but I'm glad Obama will include him in his administraion, even if Commerce is a fairly low-level Cabinet job.

Remember, Richardson's endorsement of Obama was a very big deal at the time, considering his connections to the Clintons. He and Ted Kennedy played a very big role in getting Obama elected.

Moussad   November 21st, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I like Bill Richardson. I think it would add to the historic significance of Obama's election if Bill becomes the first Latino to be SoS. But Hillary seems to be edging closer to the SoS post everyday. In that case, I would rather see Bill appointed as Energy Sec. than Commerce Sec. because i like the ideas he put forward on energy independence for the US, and am not so sure about his position on free trade particularly NAFTA and AGOA

riccarlo, Cal   November 21st, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Gov. Richardson has served his country well; he will be a fine Secretary of Commerce or, better yet, of Secretary of State, depending on what Hillary does; either way, he'll benefit the nation.

Mj TX   November 21st, 2008 4:51 pm ET

Richardson deserves any post and l am happy for him any post he will be appointed to. He supported Barack and yet he was very close to the Clintons.

About Hillary, she can have the SOS post Barack is the president-elect and that the reality. l do not mind if she takes it because aside politics she campaigned for him in the end and was much better than her husband Bill. Youall have to remember that, it was during their years things were much better. l could quit one job and get the next one in the same day. These days you will be lucky if you got a PT job at a 7-11. My paycheck was enough to cover my bills and put enough in my savings these days l can barely make it to work the next day.

Barack is a very smart man and we all need to give him a chance. It may look as though he's bringing in the same people who had been in Clinton's administration but they understood how to do things and they have the experience. He will bring in other people as well but he is trying to get the best. If you want this country to go in the right direction then let him pick the best we may not agree with all his picks but it could be alot worse if we got the McsameMcPalin.

Many people underestimated him but and look how he run his camp the best l have ever seen in the history not that l was born here but l read American History. l am lucky l got a chance to vote.

Give him a chance!!! things will get worse before they get better. Rome was not built in one day. The crisis we're in did not happen in one day.

Governor Richardson is a good candidate to be considered for either Secretary of State or Commerce Secretary. The only thing I don't like about him is his long winded talks. He has to learn to be precise and to the point.
Richard Holbrook will be a better Secretary of State than Hillary Clinton. Unlike Hillary, Richard doesn't come with any past baggage (like coming under sniper fire when she visited Bosnia). If Obama has definitely made Hillary his choice for Secretary of State (SOS), then he would perhaps end up disappointing many people who voted for him. May be she would help him if there is a call at 3 a.m. God knows.

Krystyn   November 21st, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Those decrying the "lack of change" were never Obama supporters, this is clear from your comments.

Let me remind you that you wanted McCain. Let me remind you that he wanted to change NOTHING.

So please do not sit there and complain that YOU aren't seeing change. Its hypocritical and small.

joe   November 21st, 2008 4:49 pm ET

end of Bush error!

Kenny   November 21st, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Change doesn't mean forcing the left's agenda down people's throat. It means finding the right people with the right kind of experience to get things done. You might not like Obama's choices but he is picking the most experience professionals unlike Bush who picked people who had no experience whatsoever. These cabinet choices shows that Obama is smart enough to know that he doesn't know everything.

joeyjnc   November 21st, 2008 4:44 pm ET

To all the Hillary haters, get a LIFE! She is more than qualified to be SOS. The Clintons are known around the world and are very well respected, unlike some people on this post. Its funny how easily people forget what the Clinton's did for this country during Bill's administration.

TJ   November 21st, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Personally, it seems to me that Bill Richardson would do a better job at Secretary of State, but I'm looking from the outside in, and I trust Obama's judgment. Hillary *is* a *tough* negotiator, so as long as she's willing to keep whatever dissent she may have about Obama's foreign policy behind closed doors (where I'm sure that he'll whole-heartedly consider everything she has to say), then she should make for a strong, influential advocate. I actually think that she should be particularly helpful if Obama plans to really tackle the seemingly impossible mission of a middle east peace deal. She's the perfect person for getting Israel to actually make some concessions, which is the only way that they're ever going to get anything done. I think the people of Israel actually realize this too. While we've been arguing about who is more "pro-Israel" here in the states, they've actually been negotiating and trying to forge a peace deal with Hamas for goodness sakes.

Marcelino R. Gutierrez   November 21st, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Hillary and Bill should not be trusted. They will not be subservant to Obama and will sabotage him whenever they do not get their way. Besides, after that landing under fire by Hillary she ended up with no credibility.

Richard Larson   November 21st, 2008 4:43 pm ET

The Gov should do well in any one of several positions. I list them in descending order: State, Energy, Interior, and Commerce. He would also do well, as already proven, at the U.N. Whatever, I am certain that Bill Richardson will be among the closest of Obama's advisors. The prez should listen to him on a wide array of issues.

jm for sc   November 21st, 2008 4:43 pm ET

For all the bloggers who are worrying about "Change" the change is in the leader not in the followers. The Changes will occur in President-elect Obama's policies not in the people.

I really hope the media would give the new administration time to fill the positions needed.

Jen, Cali   November 21st, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Hillary Clinton should have been the Democratic nominee for president. Obama knows it, and the rest of the nation knows it. Now, apparently, we'll get the Clinton administration back, anyway.

Celeste   November 21st, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Most of you naysayers who are complaining about Obama's picks, are clueless. After all is said and done, the next administration will have the brightest, best and most competent people running this country. It will be two terms of great victory for the American people. Then again, maybe some of the naysayers are Republicans who are just scared that Obama's administration will be a grand success thus leaving the GOP out in the cold longer that the anticipated 16 yrs. Get a new life, and get used to it. Democrats will be in office for as long as it takes to get this country on track again, after the abysmal performance of the GOP over the past 8 yrs., By then, maybe you would have re-invented yourselves after much soul-searching. for now, I WELCOME CHANGE!

J White   November 21st, 2008 4:41 pm ET

I thought Bill Richardson would make the best choice for Secretary of State. Why oh why, can' t they reverse these positions???

Just another CNN poster   November 21st, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Obama Victim

Your thinking obviously is that of a 3rd grader if you think the only meaning of change is people.

The change Obama talked about was how he's going to run the government. Who is going to be focused on, the American people, or big companies like the past eight years.

Invest in stemcell research and grow a brain.

Jen, Cali   November 21st, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Hillary Clinton should have been the Democratic nominee for president. Obama knows it, and the rest of the nation knows it. Well, apparently we'll get the next best thing - the entire former Clinton administration !!!!!!!!!!!!!

hugh ~ california   November 21st, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Bill Richardson is an good and decent man, but Hillary would be the better choice for Secretary of State. Apparently, Barack Obama knows something his distractors fail to recognize–the mental toughness of Hillary Clinton. He knows first hand how much tenacity she has, and how intelligent she is. If you want to negotiation with your adversaries you need those qualities. She has been on the world stage before and foreign leaders know that she commands respect for America’s place in the world. Obama knows what he’s doing.

Vic   November 21st, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Whatever kind of doggie the Obamas choose for his little girls, it will surely need a caretaker and groomer, especially if it's a poodle. He is such an expert with sculpting his facial growth, he's ready-made.

Jon   November 21st, 2008 4:39 pm ET

This is a strange post. You have the democrats who fight amongst themselves over favorites, then you have some morons who keep citing where's the change? To the morons: the change is getting away from devisive republican theory. Changing the king-like structure of the Bush administration. His campaign didn't suggest that they would staff only inexperienced outsiders. If that were the case you would be complaining about those choices. Simply put. You are morons. Things were great under Clinton, things are terrible under Bush. Obama will use alot of those from one of the most successful presidencies in recent times. To the in-fighting democrats, pull it together! Stop acting like children, Hillary has the experience, the connections, and the international respect. She is the best choice.

worriedmom   November 21st, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I think Hillary will make a good Secretary of State but somehow does all of this Bill and Hillary thing make you wonder if Obama is doing what Putin is doing in Russia?? Who's really gonna be in charge????

Randy   November 21st, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Richard, the Clinton era was one of prosperity. The change will be from one of the worst eras of our time to hopefully another prosperous time. That is the change we need. If that takes some of the old Clinton administration, then so be it. They did us good, very good. Clinton was handed a deficit but left office with a surplus, while we are now faced with a $45 trillion deficit.

It's always amusing to see what the right-wing talking heads are saying by watching the drones repeat it over and over again.

Yes, this is change. Hiring qualified people to do important jobs qualifies as a major change over the last eight years.

I'm disappointed Richardson didn't get Secretary of State, but Hillary will do well and Richardson will do great at Commerce.

Ron Fugate   November 21st, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Governor Richardson would be a superb choice for any number of key adminstration roles. Commerce will be a key post and the governor a terrifc fit.

Carolyn   November 21st, 2008 4:34 pm ET

I am so hoping Richardson will be Secretary of State and this hype on Hillary, is just that hype! Richardson bucked the whole Clinton Tribe and their nasty remarks about him. for doing what he thought was best for the country. I think he has more foresight that good ole Hillary! and would be a great Secretary of State.

Steve   November 21st, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Gov. Richardson is a capable man; with his quiet demeanor and infinite patience, he would have been a great Secretary of State. However, he will be good in any Cabinet position.

I'm confused about the people who are whining because Obama is selecting people with experience. Do you want him to select inexperienced people because inexperience = change? Why can't he choose experienced people, and as our leader, change the way they do business? To expect Obama to choose inexperienced people to lead our government is reckless and irresponsible.

It seems to me the people who are now criticizing Barack Obama for selecting experienced people to be in his cabinet are the same people who criticized him during the campaign for not having enough experience to be president.

Some people are going to criticize Obama regardless of what he does because there is nothing he can reasonably do to satisfy them. He simply needs to ignore these people because giving them attention is just a waste of time and energy.

Jameson S.   November 21st, 2008 4:29 pm ET

SAB   November 21st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Some of the comments on this blog is really stupid. First of all, Hillary will do just fine as SOS. Bill will do fine as SOC. Each of them ought to consider it a privilege to be of a service to our country not to mention the current issues that we face as a nation. All of this egotistical crap makes no sense. It's all about being a team player.

Alex   November 21st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I am very happy Hillary Clinton is apparently going to beat out Richardson for SoS job. She is far more qualified than Richardson could ever be. But watch your backside Barrack Obama. We've already seen what Richardson will do just to get ahead.

John -- White Plains, NY   November 21st, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Hillary or Richardson are both qualified for the Secretary of State position. America it is time to wake up! The people he is picking to help run his administration need to have proven experience so he does not have to feel the need to micro manage. He is basically taking on a Henry Ford approach by bringing in the most talented, capable and confident people so he can spend his time looking at the big picture. He has taken on a monumental task and does not need to be overburdened with a lot of newbies with no previous white house experience. It only takes one person to make a change so quit throwing stones and sit back, wait and watch! Stop living up to the reputation of Americans, a country with no patience. After all, we did not get in this mess overnight and are certainly not going to get out of it overnight. Ask yourself the question; were you this critical of the current administration? If you weren’t perhaps you should have been!

Barry, were you lying then, or are you lying now?

Hillary has power and she is smart. She put up a good fight so she should get the job as SOS. Bill is a good honest and smart man and he came out early for Obama but the power that Hillary and Bill have around the world makes her the better pick SOS. America is BACK. We will be ok people. Ok people! The change will come! We are changing from a GOP gangster mentality to an intelligent, thoughtful and engaging administration.
Hillary will be a great SOS because she already has a good relationship with most of the world leaders. And her husband gives us a "twofor". Bill Clinton is a great statesman. He can mentor Hillary and her staff.
Bill Richardson is also a international figure. He has had the hard conversations North Korea and China. But Sec. of Commerce...I think is a waste of talent.
Yes, GOP the change is here. You lost and we have to endure your whinning.
Help Obama succeed and you will prosper! Hope that he fails and it is your own demise!

Obama how could you do this to Bill Richardson!! He came out for in the beginning of the campaign and in the meantime the powerful Clintons disowned him as a friend. He is much more deserving for SOS then Hillary. I supported you when it looked like you didn't have a chance against Hillary and Bill Clinton with all the dirty politics they threw at you. I called your office many times in Chicago saying what Bill was saying about you and the same with Hillary that were out right lies. I was so proud when you didn't buckle under and support her for Vice President. I thought you might offer her something but not this. She is more important than the Vice President with this position. Believe me when I say there will be a day you will regret this. They are powerful and dishonest and you have intregity but I am sad to say you really disappointed me with this deceision. And CNN what's the big idea with your word press highlighting Obama's name in red like an error? Didn't you guys get the memo to add his name to your dictionary?

This guy knew Barack was going to win and so he endorses him and look...he's in. Congrats Hillary

Jack from Stamford, CT   November 21st, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Were you expecting a leader from a boy scout troop in Wyoming or from Cape Cod? There has to be some experience here...Obama's selections have been thoughtful...we don't need another Brown from FEMA...

Scott NYC Independent   November 21st, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I thought him a good pick for Sec. of state but now that the idea of him as Commerce Sec. is floated I think he might be even better in that post. He has the demeanor suited to re-think and negoiate our ill-drafted trade agreements.

Christopher Gilliard   November 21st, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Richardson has foreign policy credentials and he didn't even have to lie about having them like Hillary did. Let her return to the senate and be a junior senator like all others who try and fail to win the presidency. Why does she warrant such special treatment? I can understand Obama's wanting put forth a united front but he doesn't have to be a fool about it. This is still the same woman who called him all kinds of names and attacked his credentials and abilities. For that you give her the Secretary of State position? Stop kissing her behind and be a leader!!!

dor   November 21st, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Please do not pick Bill Richardson for any post. I live in the state of New Mexico and all you need to do is look at the status of this state to see that he is not qualified for a U S government post. He can't even take care of his own state.

Democrat in ARIZONA   November 21st, 2008 4:05 pm ET

If Barack does not keep his promises, we the people who helped him get elected will work hard to remove him from office. I wonder what kind of message he is going to preach in the next election. The change message would not work in the next election.

Bill R should be SOS

Cheese and Whine   November 21st, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Seriously...can we stop the "oh this isn't change" comments?" It is really pathetic.

1. He's not president yet.
2. If he put a bunch of faces in his cabinet that you never heard of, you'd be spazzing out because McCain's entire campaign was run on being more experienced.
3. Change comes from policy not personality. You probably voted for personality the last 8 years and that's why we are in the amidst of economic collapse, at total war with a tactic...not an enemy, and completely socially divided nation.

You can disagree with the selection...you can disagree with the policy...but since he's not President and has not made any policies...Stop your whining. You sound like a child. Leave the internet to the big kids.

Barack ... I'm a Columbia man, like you, and I've got your back but Richardson in Commerce strikes me as quid pro quo.

I like him for Secretary of State over Hillary... i don't like him for Commerce ...

Maybe this is something you feel you've got to do ... politically ... and I'll understand that but I think you should dump Hillary or at least give her H&HS, give State to the former diplomat, Richardson, and find something else for Daschele.

I also hear that HUD is going to Miami Mayor ... don't know much about that new face...

I love Eric Holder, another Columbia brother for top cop at Attorney General. He is THE BEST qualified pick you've made so far.

Emmanuel ... the real pit bull ... will be good and making sure people don't sit on their you-know-whats and do nothing.

I like Summers for Treasury ... no time for lightweights ... Ladies get over your view that Summers is sexist ... he's not.

Napolitano is new blood at Homeland Security ...

Will be looking for several new faces to serve as the Deputies to these many Cabinet secretaries so that the Dems build the pipeline for future talent.

Works for me......and by the way change is in the policy of the Obama Administration, change is in the ethical governing of doing the right thing for the American people, change is what lies ahead for all of us as we step into 2009 with a desire to change the course of our economy and change the way we are perceived throughout the world.

Sol...another Obamabot.

Richardson was THE most qualified of the ENTIRE field. But you clowns fell for glitz, smooth lines, and the chance to 'make history'. It's HILARIOUS that so many people didn't see Obama for the con man he is.

Obama before the election:

"We need change we can believe in!"

"We need change now!"

after the election:

"About that change...yeah, that's probably not going to happen..."

"Let's slow down on that 'change' stuff..."

LOL, suckers!

Travis In Colorado   November 21st, 2008 4:01 pm ET

If I were Hillary Clinton, I would turn down the job. For months Barack ranted about how Hillary wasn't qualified to be president, and how the Bill Clinton Administration was lousy. So Hillary wasn't good enough to be president but Barack needed her so bad to campaign for him because he wasn't good enough to do it himself. And NOW she's good enough to be Secretary of State. And of course, we have Bill Richardson. This man owes his career to Bill Clinton, and then he turns on the Clintons and endorses Obama. This turncoat should get the job for the way he behaved, Barack needs another snake in his administration. Hillary, save your career, tell them to keep their job, and stick with the Senate. You'll be better off! We still love you Hillary, you and Bill!

Bill Clinton is sooooh happy.   November 21st, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Bill convinced Obama to make her Sec. of State just so she would be out of the country a lot and he could play with the Monica Lewinskys of the world.

He's so cool for a guy who managed to get himself Impeached. I don't think people internalize that he was Impeached and what that means.

Sam   November 21st, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Richardson had one of the best qualification when running in the primary he will do an excellent job whatever he does. Obama is doing right by choosing previous political opponents unlike the one sided unreliable cronies of the current administration.

Sara from Arizona   November 21st, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Oh, the next four years will be fun. If Obama was really smart, he would steer clear of those Clintons.

Doug in New Mexico   November 21st, 2008 3:58 pm ET

2Nurselady   November 21st, 2008 3:57 pm ET

I do not think Bill Richardson has anything to add that is positive to this administration. I think he has not done well in his own state or in any other way since he's been in politics. He only got a tiny percentage, similar to that along the lines of Ralph Nader, IMO. I do not think he would do much for the Obama cabinet. I would rather see others with more capability.

Lee in Illinois   November 21st, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Patriot from ATL GA   November 21st, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Bill is an excellent choice for any position. Finally the team takes shape and the idiots are on their way out.

Why would anyone have confidence in Hillary as Sec. of State?   November 21st, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Hillary ran a terrible campaign by losing a 20 point lead she had over Obama. She hired the wrong people who did a terrible job and she finished the campaign $ 20 million in debt.

Is this the kind of performance we want out of a Sec. of State?????

Also did we vote for Obama to find the people we voted against (Hillary) in the positions most closely surrounding him???

thomas   November 21st, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Okay, but he might want to lose the "sieg heil" salute.

Santa fean   November 21st, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Although Gov. Richardson is a businessman, his strength is diplomacy and he truly should be Secretary of State. I say this with all due respect to Sen. Clinton.

Sarah   November 21st, 2008 3:55 pm ET

I hope if he doesn't get this, he gets another position. He is qualified and deserves a high position in our government.

Patrick Quigley   November 21st, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Commerce? How does that make sense? He's the qualified one for SoS. If Obama wants him as a Secretary so bad, give him the position he is qualified for and will be good at!

Judas as a Cabinet member. Go figure.

Paul   November 21st, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Richardson is a very good person, and a very good politician.
Although he campaigned for the Presidency, I think even he knew he wasn't there to win the White House.
Anyway, I would prefer him as SoS, but Clinton seems like a good choice, too. Commerce for Richardson could bring Latin America (not just Mexico, but all the countries in the south) closer to the U.S.
Latin America really has a very poor political perception of the U.S. thanks to Bush's foreign policies.

Anonymous   November 21st, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Commerce? How does that make any sense? The guy is qualified to be SoS, and should be! If Obama wants to put Richardson in the Cabinet, then give him the position he's actually right for

Linda, NC   November 21st, 2008 3:53 pm ET

To Obama Victim: what did you think change was? Change of people? Did you expect Obama to fire every one in Washington and run a new recruitment for the office in 2month time?
The change Obama promised was change in policies and a change in the way washington works for the american people. I am positive that we will see that soon after he takes office.

David   November 21st, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Richardson doesn't deserve any post. Americans should consider loyalty and respect to be important traits of anyone that will represent our nation on the international stage.

His blatant lack of both characteristics that came through when he endorsed Obama, and not Clinton after all that family did for him, should be a clear indicator to Obama.

If Obama really does have such great judgment, he should be able to clearly see that Richardson doesn't care about his administration, or anyone but himself for that matter.

Eddie OHIO Independent   November 21st, 2008 3:51 pm ET

RF   November 21st, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I'm glad Richardson will be getting a senior post in the Adminisitration, but it really should have been Secretary of State. It has nothing to do with liking or disliking Hillary, either. It's a simple matter of who's most qualified. Just look at Bill's resume compared to Hillary's! Hers is nothing to sneeze at, but come on – he's the CLEAR choice for SoS. I have a feeling there's some pandering going on here...

Here, here!! At least you know he has a back bone and "balls". He took a lot of flack for endorsing President Obama for President instead of the Clinton machine. He stood his ground and delivered his state for our new president. This is a real man, and would you say "Maverick". And I am glad to see people coming to the white house from the border states, they have a unique insight to many of this country's most pressing issues and will bring balance. I say welcome aboard to Gov. Richardson, we are looking forward to having you on the TEAM!!

TrueIndependent   November 21st, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Richardson would make a better S of S than Hillary.

Hillary as S of S? I really don’t think this is a wise choice, simply because unlike McCain, Hillary has difficulty being led and being a team player.
With the Clinton's penchant for drama, my fear is that with Clinton's foreign money making activities curtailed because Hillary is S of S, Bill might get bored and start paying attention to other women. If that happens, the Democrats should forget 2010 and 2012.

Richard`   November 21st, 2008 3:45 pm ET

DC in AZ   November 21st, 2008 3:45 pm ET

I'd would have much rather seen a Richardson Sec. of State, however the name Clinton commands respect worlwide and as long as Obama keeps her in check it'll work out fine.

By the way I am so sick of Republican haters. Every Single One of You is closed minded and bitter. ALWAYS tearing people down. Just because it's not a Repub in the White House you are fine with sitting on your hands and actually hoping that this nation gets worse just so you can say "see we told you Obama and Dems are no good!" Like I tell the people at the office...if it's that important get involved and do something. You have lots of gripes but ZERO answers, same as your guys Rush and Hannity. Why do you think they sit behind a mic. a jabber hate...because if they had real answers the would have run for office and done something. You guys wear me out.

I agree, Helen   November 21st, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Kerry deserves something too.
The only reason I want Hillary in any Cabinet position is that Barack will be her boss and she will have less power than if she was in the Senate. The man is dumb like a fox!

Kevin   November 21st, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Richardson deserves Secretary of State after what he did in Korea. If someone isn't familiar with it, you should google it. He is well respected internationally and obviously is doing something right. He won't get it because of Clinton but it should be him.

Due to the abuses of the past 8 years, we need the smartest, most dedicated and well rounded people available to help get things on back track. It's the policy that represents a change, not all of the players, and even they are a change from the disastrous Bush regime.
