Sources: Richardson a 'serious contender' for Commerce post

After dropping out of the presidential race, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who had worked in Bill Clinton's administration, endorsed Barack Obama.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico is a serious contender for commerce secretary in the Obama administration, two sources close to the transition said Friday.

The same sources, however, cautioned that Richardson could be tapped for another senior post as well. They do not consider Richardson's appointment to the Commerce Department to be a done deal.

Richardson, 61, was a candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Currently in his second term as New Mexico's governor, he previously served as ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary in the Clinton administration.

He's in like Flint. He only took the Governorship because he wanted to run for the presidency. It's all a chess game.

Obama saw how quickly he turned on the Clintons – probably didn't want to deal with the same thing down the road. Obama doesn't need him now – just that simple.

I like Richardson and he has a great international resume. But what background does he have for Commerce Secretary? I'm not sure that's a good fit.

He has been a great Governor for New Mexico and will be an excellent SoS or Commerce Secretary!

I don't have any ill will towards this guy – and that is saying something when talking about a politician.

But, here come the Repubs. He's not an old rich white guy who's family used to own slaves and now owns either a bank or an oil company – so they're all upset.

I'd favor to see him as Commerce Secretary, but I'm going to do the Republican thing this time and put in a hate vote: I'd rather see him in the Secretary of State position than Hillary Clinton.

By the way, I also think Hillary will be a great SoS – she rocks!

Clinton is a far better choice for Sec of State than Richardson is. From here in the outside world, the Clintons are respected and taken very seriously. Richardson is suited for other top jobs and should be in the cabinet. Obama is on the right course. For all the people griping about him tapping into the Clinton brain-trust, I simply don't know what you expect. Do you want neophites in the top jobs when there is so much turmoil around the globe? He needs the best and brightest and that is the like he is surrounding himself with. Give the man a chance before tearing him down. You kept Bush in the WH when it was clear what an idiot he was during the 2000 campaign and where was the outcry when he surrounded himself with the corrupt people from the Nixon era? Moreso where was the outcry when Bush & Co were destroying your country? Now look at the mess they are leaving and the utter contempt they are showing with the orders and regulations that they are ramming through now.

I see that Richardson will probably be upset, but then so were all those who believed he was a loyal supporter before he decided to go with Obama and hitch his wagon for possible VP spot since it was mentionned about the first black and possible first Hispanic VP. . He'll get some job I am sure for his loyalty but as far as me, personally, he will never be the man I thought him to be after he did what he did.

Here is yet another well-thought-out choice by our president-elect. I am so glad he is filling posts with intelligent and independent people, rather than yes-men and -women or political cronies.

It is so wonderful to imagine the possibilities for our country with people who know what they're talking about in the highest positions of authority.

Can someone please help me the whole 'change' aspect to the upcoming presidency? I really don't get it...all of these appointees he's floating are all retreads from previous administrations? So, it's not really 'change," it's just change from the previous 8 years...um...OK...

Commerce is a great fit! He is qualified for SoS but no star power. Richardson definitely deserved a big prize and glad he got one!

McCain supporters stop adding comments like you are a Obama supporter. Anybody is better than Bush or McCain.

I Still think OBAMA is BRILLIANT

By giving the liar hillary the SoS position he removes her from Congress.
    Smart so far,
After six months, when she has shown that she cannot be trusted to do the job as the President wants it done, he fires her. She is out of the government completely!

    like I said BRILLIANT MAN!

by using Richardson and not a sitting Congress Person he does not reduce his support in Congress again Brilliant!

****BEWARE****** OBAMA SUPPORTERS OF THE FAR-RIGHT TRYING TO DIVIDE US, OR SECOND GUESS OBAMA!

Can someone tell me what ACTUAL experience all of Obama's appointments have? So far all they have is meeting experience. What hands on experience with the specified areas do these people have? (Not condescending, but no one will report what these people have actually DONE)

Richardson has been politically expedient and lack character in his career. He is not respected at all by most Asian countries whereas Hilary is truly a rock star in the best sense of the word.

Oh goodie, Richardson in charge of Commerce. Mr. Tax the people and give to Corporations.

His expensive outsourced Choo Choo and now the state is about 600 million SHORT.

So of course, his bright idea is to start cutting state staff, where they've have freezes and are short staffed already with people doing 2 and 3 times the work.

The man who promised to have transportation pay for the train and now they just increased sales tax to pay for maintenance.

The man who gives tax dollars to businesses to contributions.

The man who builds a spaceport on wide open space New Mexico, but instead rents the land from two ranchers.

Obama will dEFINITELY be a oner term president.

Everyone should realize that any democrat who has been around for any length of time has ties to clinton, if he were to pick a bunch of new young faces, the same people would be crying about the lack of experience. Wait till he actually becomes president and starts putting forth policy before you start to criticize his legacy. The change will be in his thought process and policies, so lets wait to see what happens first.
