Personal to Monica L:

Clinton inherited Somalia from Bush, Sr - should never have goine there!

And Clinton sought appropriations for the CIA, by law, on three occasions to get bin Laden and al Qaeda, but was accused of "waggin' the dog" by the GOP and Trent Lott and enied the funds!

Next time, use facts.

gary n.---right on!

And that is where your argument falls apart, Patrick. Complete free trade only works when there is a level playing field. When the standard of living is higher in one country than another, the first will suffer as the second prospers. The US and India are an example.

Monica---as a Democrat who voted for Clinton, Gore, Kerry, and Obama, I know Clinton made mistakes with "free trade" BUT Bush and Co. magnified every misstep and added to them with more agreements, allowing more companies to move their manufacturing, while spending us the the brink of bankruptcy.

I like Gail Collins's idea. Bush and Cheney should resign now, let Nancy Pelosi become president and enact Obama's agenda starting today, letting him take over on January 20. The problem in the world markets is confidence, and Bush's presence, blabbing about the value of the free market when the problem is the market was too free, is not confidence building for anyone.

Free trade is all fine and well AFTER we get our own house in order. You can't even contact any credit card company and speak to people from America. We trade with a lot of countries that do not pay living wages and so not care about human rights. We need all the jobs we can get here in the USA and it is hard to believe that Bush is so proud of out sourcing so many.
I know Clinton started this with NAFTA but it was a bad idea then and Bush only made it worse.
Most of our politicians have never worked for a real paycheck and have no idea what it is like to be out of work and broke. When your children are hungry and you can't afford to turn on the heat and you get a call from a collector with an accent you can't understand it is pretty crazy!

To Monica and Patrick:
I guess you two are part of the 19% that think Bush is still doing a good job. Get over it, conservatism has shown what it will do to the American people and it isn't nice unless you are in that upper 1% tax bracket. Now for the reason our jobs are being shipped over seas is because we do not have a mandatory health care system. Until we do all US corporations are going to continue to ship jobs overseas. High tax rates on business has nothing to do with our jobs going overseas and not because "every American expects $30 an hr to do a job a third grader can do" (Monica) It's because since their is no mandatory health care system the companies can't afford to pay the high cost of taking care of their loyal workers who retire anymore. It's cheaper to ship their items from overseas than it is to take care of employees that retire. They send the jobs over seas because all of those countries use and abuse their work force. When they start to decline in productivity they just throw them away. Stop with the crap against the American worker. It is conservatism and corporate greed that has destroyed this country not labor unions and the American worker.

We will not be able to compete globally unless we seriously revamp our education and take care of our healthcare problems. When our college graduate still has to use his or her fingers to count numbers, you know something is terribly wrong in our education. We shipped just about all the low level jobs overseas, but we don't have well trained higher level workers to move us into high tech. We should reimburse tuition directly to the auto workers in Detroit for getting more education, not to the CEOs of the three automakers. They should have been fired long ago.

It seems nobody is happy with what they have got. We don't like the tainted Chinese imports and the trillions of deficit, while the Chinese said they aren't happy with the pollution we gave them. The finished or unfinished goods have to be shipped across the oceans, which adds to the global warming problem we recognized today. We have to throw out the junk or tainted goods and add more piles to our landfills. What's the point of making everyone unhappy by trading globally?

This globalization uprooted lots of migrant workers from farming in the remote regions of China. Now they have got nothing if they lose their jobs in this recession. Here, many of us already lost jobs due to the economic downturn. This is the penalty of maximizing profits we are seeing today. When will we know we have had enough?

Can this loser stay in a locked room somewhere until it's time for him to leave? Why is he still trying to screw things up?

The economy is a disaster and he is telling the world how things should be done!! AAAhhhh!! Someone put duct tape on his mouth!!

Also, Clinton did start it, but Kerry wanted to stop it. We kept Bush in office instead, and he perfected it. How many jobs went overseas over the last 8 years, and how does free trade help us? By screwing things up so much we have to give 700 billion of our money to help the rich?

Please, someone drag him from the room!!

Shut up until it's time for you to finally go!!

Bush, haven't you done enough damage? You will not be happy until you leave us as a third world country. You will not speak about the situation here in the USA, but you can speak in another country will we are suffering. Go back to Maine. Why do you allow these countries to sell USA products 10 times higher next to theirs. Japan is a prime example.

Patrick says, "But by opening up free trade we help 10 times the number of people that get hurt. "

Right - ask that to any worker in a country in which the Unites States has a free trade or similar deal with. Ask them how much it has helped.
Do your homework on the outcome of globalization, or simply look around.

Get real, Bertha, you may wish yoiu could hear him again befoer it is all over with. President Bush has done great things for our country. Only the ignorant and ileterate cannot see that. He is for freedom in our countgry and what he has done is protect us from our enemies for 8 years without bowing down and scraping to the enemies. He has kept our military strong and stands behind our defense system. The democrats will wish they had asomething to shield them from when the big nuclear attacks come if the defense system is not finished and kept inplace.

Yes, Clinton signed NAFTA, but Bush doesn't have to continue that ruinous policy.

In addition, Bush is now pushing regulations on a woman's reproductive health - birth control, etc. These are things he has no business interfering in. Can't wait 'til he's gone!

Okay, I READ Obama's economic plan over and over. I'm in IT. Do I now have to pick up a shovel? Thank you for those manual labor jobs, but they're not good enough to grow the economy. Someone told me that under Clinton, he allowed X amount of jobs to be offshored, so we had IT jobs. With W in office, MOST of the IT jobs were offshored or outsourced -offshored. For example, Blue Cross Blue Shield, outsourced most of their mainframe jobs to IBM. In return, IBM just offshored it. Bottomline, stop bleeding TECHNO jobs overseas unless we are all employed first. We pay taxes so we should be offered jobs first before any offshore.

Thank you for free trade, but remember, we pay taxes so jobs should try to stay here...

It's amazing how selfish people can be. Sure we can be a protectionist country and MAYBE save a few jobs. But by opening up free trade we help 10 times the number of people that get hurt. But people are selfish and only see things in the prism of their own daily lives. We are one people sharing this world. What is good for everyone is good for us. Free trade is what we need more of.

All free trade agreements should be contingent upon the country who wishes to export to the US ensuring a living wage for workers, reasonable effective health and safety requirements, both for the workers and the products, appropriately stringent environmental practices in the factories and their suppliers, and true freedom in their markets for US goods. Otherwise, no dice. There is no real free trade without fair trade.

It just amazes me how ordinary people can believe free trade helps their economic situations. The U.S. and Canada cannot compete with Mexico and the Asian and 3rd world countries unless we lower our working and living standards to what exists in those countries.

People that think the Autoworkers should lower their wages to match those at Walmart are as much to blame for the poverty as is Bush and his gang of thiefs.

Well said all of you. I just don't understand how he can be so proud of his 14 trade agreements when our people are jobless, our businesses are closing and our economy is in the toliet. He is totally clueless and it is so disheartening to realize we not only gave him 4 years to do his damage but gave him 8 years. I say 'we' even though I DID NOT vote for him either time. It was 'we the people' who did it.

Our country is totally without a leader right now! Please God, help us!

Shrub merely continued Clinton's ruinous trade policy. Obama appears to be another Wall St. puppet if his recent appointments are any indication of coming events. I admit I voted for O for change, but appointting Hill at state gives me a really bad feeling. These Clintons are sick to death in love with themselves. Why people continue to hold them in such high regard is puzzling. Play it forward O, not backwards.

This guy just amazes me with his indifference and moronic cluelessness. His country is reeling from the effects of his inept policies--but no leadership is coming from the White House during the worst economic crisis in memory. Instead he hides and chooses to lecture foreign governments on the benefits of free trade! The poor shmuck must really believe what the hard core neocons keep feeding him. I'd be tempted to say all those who voted for him a SECOND time got exactly what they asked for---except his mismanagement has hurt us all.

Bush should be in the United States instead of flying off to Peru. This is the kind of mentality he has, poor priority. We have bigger economic problem at home and he is doing nothing to help the cause. He should resign his office before his rating goes down more. Just bidding this time for over a month is too long since gutless Congress to impeach him.

I would just like to remind everyone that Clinton signed the free trade agreement, Clinton deregulated the mortgage industry, Clinton did not allow a military strike on Bin Laden when we had a chance, Clinton pulled our troops out of Somalia (now another terrorist breeding ground).

Yet this is all Bush's fault??

RML - All the jobs are leaving this country because American workers expect to get paid $30/hr for a job my ten year old son could do.

The thing is, protectionism does work, in America at least. Americans are the worlds biggest consumers and we love buying exotic things from other countries, so if American workers have jobs and money, we WILL trade with the world. Freely.
