(CNN) – Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter confirms to CNN the Obama daughters will attend Sidwell Friends school in Washington, DC.

"They looked at a lot of great schools but they felt Sidwell fit their best interests," spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter told CNN.

Chelsea Clinton also attended the school when her father was in the White House.

Sidwell is a Quaker school and the Society of Friends (Quakers) have always stood for peace, justice, equality, fairness and simplicity. Congratulations to the Obamas from making this thoughtful choice.

it's a shame, as it would've been fantastic support for the public school system...on the other hand, I worry for his family givne the hate in this country. Obama shouldn't bet his kid's security for ideals.

I am sorry but Obama does not need to try and prove a point with his little girls lives by sending them to a public school, he needs to worry about running the country, not worring about his girls safety while they go to school. We all know we have nut jobs in this country, I think this was a very good choice................

The girls are already attending private schools in Chicago, it doesn't make any difference if they are attending another private school in DC.

It's pretty normal for children of high profile people to attend private schools. I can't name one child of a celebrity living in NYC that is attending a public school.

President- Elect Barack Obama and his wife, the future First Lady, Michelle Obama have shown by their actions just how much they do love their kids by putting them in private school. Putting them in public school would have been ludicrous.
Public schools need a lot of re hauling and restructuring before it is ready for any child. People enroll their kids in public schools because it is mandatory and they cannot afford a good education for them. Putting one's child in an inferior educational situation to prove a point is stupid, and the Obamas' are not stupid.

Honestly people....are you that out of touch with reality? No matter how wonderful a public school might be...it is no place for the president's children. It has nothing to do with race, economic reasons, or his policies on public schools. How in the world can you critisize the man for wanting what is best for his children? The school he chose will be able to provde a safe environment where they will have the best chance to learn and be successful. I teach 6th grade in a wonderful public school. This does not outrage me in the least. What does outrage me is the insensitive and irrelavant comments some of you make.

    Shut up you hate mongers.

I wouldn't put my kids in the public school system either, not after how the republicans have completely reduced them to worse then third world centers of child abuse and mistreatment. The places suck thanks to all of the horrid treatment the Bush administration has bestowed upon them.

Had the democrats not been vetoed the past two years and outnumbered the previous six, our public schools would be a good place to have our children gain an education. But as it stands, the republicans have made them nothing more then a good place to get pregnant, get high, or get killed at.

Amy Carter went to public school while living in the White House. They didn't handle it well and she is still a basket case. Sidwell Friends knows how to do it.

This is actually a savings for the taxpayers since the Secret Service is at Sidwell anyway for Biden's granddaughter.

You people ripping the choice are morons. It would be irresponsible to put them into a public school for safety reasons alone. Look how Jimmy Carters daughter was treated in public school, it was a disaster. At least this school has a track record dealing with high profile students. I think the Obama's have shown wise judgement looking out for the best interest of their girls, not for how it will look politically.

Okay. who cares if he is sending them to a private school. Obviously there are going to be crazy radicals who could hurt the girls. They are not average children. They deserve more security. What is wrong with people these days...

DC public schools suck. Of course he's sending his girls to a good Friends school. It's green, progressive and teaches properly.

Now. it's indicative of getting on path the proper way. Stop "cutting taxes" (like McCain promised) and let us all help the public schools get back on track. It's easy to tear down when you're not involved in the process, but I'd like to know who is going to be a good American and give a little more money to get things back on track.

10 trillion, people. That's the deficit! Not going to cut defense in a time of terrorism. Let Obama become president and funnel some money to education, and not "teach to the test for everyone" like No Child Left Behind (P.O.S.).

    Thank you. goBama.

This is where the girls should attend school. Obama sending his daughters to a private school isn't making his outrage towards public schools any less. It doesn't mean that he does not support public school teachers. I am a public school teacher and this is the best choice for his girls to be safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be just as upset as all of you who feel they should send their children to public school if it wasn't for one minor detail...

    HE'S THE PRESIDENT!!!!

Let's not pretend that they are the typical American family.

If you people on this board haven't figured out that Obama is pure fraud, too bad.
Obama is a greedy, self-agrandizing elitest, just like all the rest of the DC insiders.

I am not a fan of his...obviously....but as a father, i respect his committment in doing what is best for his daughters. He chose a school based on safety and quality of education. What parent wouldnt?

It's a security issue. They are the first family and they should attend the best school fit for the first family. Why would someone questions President-elect Obama's standard when he as brought the coutry to a place of equality and pride. Now that the girls have a school, they can move to the next item on the Obama's to do list.

    Love my First Family

    Miss Lady.

I just say look at Chelsea Clinton, who went through Sidwell. As a brilliant and poised young woman, what better recommendation could the school have. Everyone hopes the very best for these two little girls.

Good choice, the secret service knows the school well, the school knows how to protect their privacy. Those kids are adorable and I hope they are happy with their new home and make a lot of friends in their new school. I wish them nothing but the best!
