The Obama girls on their way to school in Chicago

(CNN) - Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter confirms to CNN the Obama daughters will attend Sidwell Friends school in Washington, DC.

"They looked at a lot of great schools but they felt Sidwell fit their best interests," spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter told CNN.

Chelsea Clinton also attended the school when her father was in the White House.

Considering all the HATE being directed to the Obama's from the right wing nut jobs in our country, a private SAFE school would be the logical choice. I know that "logical" part throws some of you dropouts.

You people criticizing this decision are really sad. It would not have mattered if they had gone to a public school, a private school or Mars, you would have criticized it and denigrated the Obamas and liberals in general. You are such sad, hate filled people. You take every opportunity to spew your hate filled rhetoric at liberals no matter what the subject is.

I was taught that if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

His children are in the spot light now. If I was in this position, I would certainly put my children in a school that kept them safe and with some privacy- He still supports education, public schools and teachers. Him sending his children to a school with will allow them some normality, doesn't have anything to do with his support for public schools, teacher and his morals. We certainly can get off base about the issues.

First of all the children were in private schools prior to coming to DC so why should that change. I don't view this as elitist and considering the safety factor, they had to go with a school that could accommodate that. Chelsea Clinton went to the same school so what is the problem????????????

It's not surprising. I'd do exactly the same, since it is a Quaker-founded school and may still retain its original pacifist teachings. Hopefully it also retained its Quaker egalitarianism and treats everyone absolutely the same, regardless if they are Presidential offspring or not.

Oh all you haters just shut up. A sitting president cannot send his kids to a public school.

Would YOU send your kids to a public school where there would be a 95% chance of kidnappings, bombings, shootings, etc? And what of the disruption to the other kids in that school?

Think about it – they are the children of the President of the United States!

    Get a life.

If Obama went out tomorrow and captured Osama bin Laden (read that carefully... it's a different guy) single-handed you'd say he just lucked into it or wonder why he's spending time in Pakistan when there are problems here at home. Just come to grips with the fact that you hate Obama and won't like anything he does. Your first step in wising up will be to stop watching Hannity and Limbaugh.

OH MY!! People who think he should send his 2 young daughter's to the horribly failing – and crime ridden – DC public schools are crazy!

OH PLEASE – so because he admits these schools need help, he's supposed to send his daughters there? For what? To send a message?

DC schools aren't just failing they are DANGEROUS.

I live 3 miles from DC & our schools aren't that great – if I could afford Private School I would! The nightly news always has something that's going on in or around these schools.

DC schools aren't just falling apart physically, the students and neighborhoods are a problem also.

These girls are going to have secret service with them and will be shuttled around in special cars, etc. This school and others like it, have the know-how to handle these families.

If the girls had gone to public school it would have been such a show every day – and crazy.

The people who are criticizing him for this obviously didn't vote for him and are just trying to find any excuse they can!

Look up the facts on the DC public school system!!!

Doesn't bother me none, already knew they were going to a private school being that they attented one in Chicago. And plus, it was said that it would be harder to protect the girls in a public school environment, so as long as they are getting a good education, great. Besides, didn't they not say the public school's in D.C., to put it quite frankly, they suck. I wouldn't send my children there either if I had any. I would want all our children to receive a good education, we need to reform our school system and parents to get their children into their books.

Yeah right. What about my children?. I want to send them to a safe and a good school too. But no money for it.

Very Strange. Obama is sending his children to the very schools he opposes. His stance on private schools for his family is different than his stance for ordinary people. I don't get it! I guess the rich will continue to set double standards and tell us poor people what we should do.

The Obamas have a lot more to consider than educational standards. They have to.... no, MUST think about the safety of their young daughters. That school looks like a fortress... I HOPE IT IS! When we have had nut cases shouting terrorist, kill him, etc.; we and they have to expect that those girls are not exposed to anyone or anything that can hurt them! That would be THE way to hurt our President most, and believe me, there are people right here in this country who want to hurt him! Terrorist may be the least of his worries. I pray for them all daily!

Given the chance and time, I believe the country will realize what a good and wise man we have elected. But until that time, our first family needs to be protected... especially the weakest of them, those little girls!

Let's face it: some nutcase is going to try to kidnap or kill those girls within a year. I think they need all of the security they can get. If that means a private school with secret service experience, so be it.

This is our country's first black president. We need to make sure he is safe and the girls are safe. We all need to stand behind him and his family right now and have faith that he is going to lead our country into a better direction.

For all those pointing out that it's a "safety issue", doesn't it disturb you to concede that public schools aren't safe enough? Remember that Obama is the candidate who was touting the greatness of the public education system.

Believe it or not, Washington DC actually has a handful of really solid public schools: Oyster, Merch, WIS. So the fact that the Obamas are not sending their children to a DC public school is NOT an indictment on the system. Sidwell Friends is just another good school, relative to some of the good DC public schools.

Also, please do not label all DC public schools as failing. The DC School superintendent is putting alot of hard work and capital into fixing the school system.

Just another pol. He works with Ayers on schools, then sends his daughters to schools outside of the reach of him and Ayers.

Obama = Carter. At least we only have 4 years of this. Then again, it is really a Clinton administration.
