its funny that people are so petty as to criticize them for picking a private school. When it comes to children, you don't use them as a prop to make a point about public schools, you have to put them in a place where they can be protected and to cause as little disruption to the rest of the students and i know that couldn't happen all that well in a public school.

....furthermore, george, kathleen, et. al. If public schools are unsafe for our children, imagine how much more unsafe they would be for the children of the first family. I mean, surely you can understand that.

Is not the media not concerned about the welfare and safety of all the children in that school. I am sure it is a good school and want the children to be protected well. The media should really be more careful about what they report to the world.

People are being so silly. The Secret Service wouldn't have been able to protect those girls in a public school, that had already been discussed and made clear. I don't know if they wanted to send them to public school or not, but it's a moot point – they wouldn' t have been able to.

Children of the US President have security issues that would be very difficult to address in a public school. I'm not surprised the Obamas chose a private school. His choice for 2 students is not as important as the choices he will make regarding long term funding and focus for all our public schools. I remain confident that this Administration will get it right.

I'm glad his girls are going to a school that can provide the
necessary security that a public school cannot provide.

While raising my Kids we were poor... and still sent them to private schools..... Instead of whinnnnnning..... if you had an interests for your own children why did you not look into it...

The truth is if they sent them to public school you would complain on how the public were inconvienced... by the secret service.

Kathleen and George: Do you really expect the President of the United States to allow his children to go to a public school? Safety for regular students at some public schools is questioned at times and being the daughters of the most powerful man in the world would just add to the danger. There is absolutely no reason for them to be exposed to that sort of chance.

I'm relieved they chose a private school because of the security. Too many right-wing nuts and racists out there.

    George,

Obama's moral outrage about what is happening in public schools is exactly why he chooses to educate his daughters in private schools! Public schools FAIL the test! They currently don't educate!! That is what he wants to focus on fixing during his terms!!

It is much better for the First Daughters to attend this school for their safety if for any other reason. Obama can still support public schools, there should no moral outrage attached to this, it was a very wise choice one that was advised by the Secret Service so that they can better protect these girls. My grandchildren attend public schools and they are safe there, who knows about the schools in Washington, DC. The President will have plenty to worry about when he takes office and the safety of his children should not be one of them. At any rate Friends schools have always been great ones and the public schools can learn much from them.

Before Obama became the president-elect, his kids has been going to private schools..so its not a surprise as long the kids are safe and the school is well secured, public schools especially in D.C are not that safe and secured.. I wish them GOD'S protection and guidance

You angry people should take a "HAPPY PILL". It must be misable to be so angry all the time. Everything our President Elect does you people find something to be angry and critical about; happy, healthly people don't do that. And every last one of you angry mean people know that if there wasn't so many stupid, hateful, sad evil people in the world, those girls could go to a public school. The safety of those two beautiful girls is more important than any of you angry people. If you want to waste your sad life, being mad and upset about what school those girls are going to, well just be mad because don't nobody care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get a life and be happy.

I see the nasty individuals will continue to nic-pic every little thing going on with the Obamas. They can't even send their kids to a decent school without negative people complaining.

Enough with the snarky comments about the Obama's sending their children to a private school!

Sending the girls to a public school would be terribly disruptive to the school. In addition, it will be much easier for the Secret Service to protect the children at a small school that is used to high-profile students.

    Common sense, not politics.

Excellent choice on the part of Barack and Michelle Obama. To those who would criticize it as elitist, I would like to ask how they would feel if their own children were at risk of being kidnapped or killed, would they not base their decision on what is the safest school possible and not worry about public opinion? The choice of private, public, parochial or homeschooling is not something that in any way affects Obama's ability to govern. These two little girls are going to under extreme scrutiny and will have to sacrifice a great deal of their freedom as it is, let's just wish them well and not try to turn every action their parents make on their behalf as a political maneuver.

Security of President-elect's daughter is more important so all cries about him not chosing public school is rediculous.

I am a public school principal and I send my son to a private school. I do not see anything wrong with wanting more for my son. That doesn't mean President-Elect Obama doesn't care about public school students or teachers, it just means that HIS children come first. As they should.

I cant believe the American Public actually expect the children to go to public school.

The amount of secret service activity that is going to be required at a public school is tremendous.

It isnt because Obamas are elitist or not poor – its because its the most sensible thing to do.
