(CNN) – Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter confirms to CNN the Obama daughters will attend Sidwell Friends school in Washington, DC.

"They looked at a lot of great schools but they felt Sidwell fit their best interests," spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter told CNN.

Chelsea Clinton also attended the school when her father was in the White House.

To the critics – would you seriously endanger the well being of your children in an attempt to prove a point/further your political agenda on an issue such as this? I think not. Sending those girls to DC public schools was never an option and not in the best interest of anyone including any kids being educated in DC public schools.

HYPOCRITE OBAMA! Public schools have to be GOOD ENOUGH for everyone else, but only the best PRIVATE SCHOOLS for your precious daughters. Afro-americans, do you still think he is still one of you? What kind of example is this to set? A great opportunity to show confidence in public schools was lost. Of course if he has no confidence in public schools, I guess we shouldn't be at all surprised. Palin's son goes off to war, all of McCain's family served this country, and yet Obama would not even risk sending his daughters to public schools? I understand the school "best fit their needs"? What would have best fit this country's needs would have been to elect a President who walks the walk in addition to talking the talk. Obama, you are as FAKE and two faced as they come!

They attend private school here in Chicago, so it should be no surprise that they chose a similar school in D.C. As one poster stated earlier, with all the anger and negativity about Obama the girls should be in secure situation. No matter what decision they made someone is going to be unhappy with the choice. I wish them all the best...

I think it's perfectly rational to send their kids to a private school that deals with children that have high security needs. I wouldn't want my child to go to a regular public school that couldn't handle the security issue.

We all know that if everyone could afford to send their child to a private school they would do it, so everyone whining about it needs to shut up.

The girls definitely need to be at a school capable of handling all of the securty requirements without being too intrusive upon the entire student body. I'm sure they made the best decision for their girls under the difficult circumstances. Regardless, this is a private family matter.

The people questioning Obama sending his daughters to private school are really scratching at anything to say negative about him. They will be the frigging President of the United States kids you morons so no they aren't like everyone else's kids. When your kids go to school do they have secret service with them? If you can't recognize there is a difference then I'm surprised you have the ability to use a computer in the first place.

Kathleen, george, Shannon – do you think it's possible in these times to provide security for a president's children in a large public school without really inconveniencing all the other kids? I would think it would be highly intrusive to the other kids whereas in a small school, like this one, it would be less of a burden to the other kids – and likely safer for the prez's kids. I don't know – not a security expert – but strikes me that way.

The school the girls used to attend cost about $20,000 a year per child.

In other words, it wasn't private.

As much as he's been following in the Clinton's footsteps, I'm beginning to think we should have elected Hillary!

you can't blame them for wanting to send their children to a nice safe school. honestly, where would you send your children if you had the choice?

maybe obama will work hard to make sure more families have that opportunity.

would all the nay-sayers here honestly say they would send their children to a low-performing school just to make a political point. i guess you would be happy if the Obamas found the worst school where their children would receive the worst education. but no matter what he does you will hate him. shake the haters off.

CNN once again leaves out critical information in its articles - let's just say it was for political purposes. Once again Obama is acting as the usual Washington, D.C. politician. His word is meaningless.

Kathleen, George! Get a life and stop hating! What parent would not do everything they could to protect their children!?! Those girls would not safely be able to attend a public school simply because of the position their father holds. In addition to the dangers all of our kids face on a daily basis, they now have to be extra careful because of who their father is. Thank God they have parents who choose to put their safety ahead of public opinion. God Bless those kids and yours too!!

LOOK: This is not a comment on the public school system. These poor kids are going to be the target of every crackpot loon out there. The Obamas have to consider security in their decision, and sadly, there just is not a way to completely lock down any public school in the District. There just isn't. I'm pretty sure that is the number one reason they picked Friends; because the Secret Service knows it well from the Clinton era, as it was where Chelsea went. I'm sure they'd love to make a statement as great as trusting the public school system, but, from a security standpoint, it's just not possible. This is a hard decision not just from their point of view (of course they have their children's best interest in mind), but from a national security angle. I mean, imagine the tragedy if something happens to these poor kids?

No matter where he decided his kids should attend, those who don't like him would have something to say. The sad fact is that this will be the mose scrutinized Administration since George Washington. The Obama's as parents have an obligation to make sure that their girls are safe and get a good education at the same time. Safety, especially in light of the hate & anger still swirling around the Right wingers demands that they attend a private school. Perhaps in a few years, they can move to a public school, but I don't trust the fringe thinkers to leave them alone. They don't have to attend a Public school in order to get the schools fixed.

Re: Obama School choice for family

Security is a must for this family, so please quit the nasty attacks and wish the future US First Family well. Barack Obama and his wife Michelle were not raised with silver spoons, or government handouts, so let's work together a help this newly elected President make the much needed necessary changes. PEACE!
