aweful comments guys. The Obamas sent their children to private school while they lived in Chicago. This is not uncommon, this is how highly educated people deal with such issues. although I am not the smartest guy in the shed. Something tells me that the Obamas will be willing to pay the most amount of money that they could afford for their children to have the best education. How dare those elitist!!!!!

THink about the added security burden this would put on a public school where there is open access and there can not be true restrictions. I really believe that the choice was based on logistics and not that the school is any better than the public choices, etc.

THink safety folks, not a slight against the public school system.

so what some of you are saying is that no conservitive white folk that are in the public eye send their children to private schools, how dumb and short sided can you be, if it was my child I would want them to be as safe as possible

The Obama daughters deserve the best education that they can get–let alone security- and cannot be used for the politics of their father, such as to show those objecting here that he is sending his daughters to public school .

Any child can attend private school because it depends upon the type of sacrifice that a parent is willing to make on the front end. Because if the child performs well then they have many scholarships available for them to pay for school. My kids attend private school and it is taking a HUGE bite out of my pocket, but they are worth every penny of it...Guess what..they will receive scholarships to pay for their tuition...

There are many that do not like our new President-Elect, but his girls have NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT IS GOING IN THIS WORLD. They need to be safe and not have to worry about the total madness in this world. This madness going on now was not caused by our President-Elect, he has got to 'clean up' the mess left behind.

Leave the kids alone..If you want a parent to snap....mess with the children !!!! Stand in line to get your tail jacked !!!!

For heaven's sake, it is easier to provide security in a private school and that's an important aspect. As to choice, if parents want to send their children to a private school, it is within their rights, isn't it? I'm a public school teacher and I am NOToffended by their choice! If there had been a good private school near when my son was in K-12, I would have considered it. Meanwhile, I do everything I can to serve students in the public schools.

Why does it matter if it's a private school or not?

Many parents send their children to private schools. :D

Just show some respect for the Obamas to make the right choice.

Obama and his family will be in the public eye enough – give them SOME privacy, seriously!

I don't understand why some people are angry over Obama's choice of school for his daughters, these kids used to attend a private school in Chicago why now they should attend a public school? I thought we are living in a free country and everybody including the president has the right of choice.

Brilliant! I am very happy the children of this wonderful family will be blessed with such a fine education. They deserve every bit of it.

    Yes we can.

Not surprised. It is of the utmost importance that the school not only provide a good education but be a safe place for the girls. With so many hateful, nasty people in this world, their safety should be a top priority. For anyone to criticize this choice is absolutely absurd. I doubt any President's child attended a public school. So get over it people.

Shows wisdom in putting his girls in a school that will challenge them intellectually. Do what is best for your children, not what will pacify critics. That is capitalism. You earn more money, you have more options.

His kids should go to public schools or public charter schools. He is just a typical politician. Too bad he really isn't different like he claimed to be. ALL children deserve the same education...no matter what their parents do for a living. I wish he believed it, too.

Anybody who can afford to send their kids to private school and wish to do so, more power to them. I'm not a wealthy liberal. I sacrificed and sent my kids to private school. All you haters, get over it. Let's work together to get our public school system where it needs to be. After all, our tax dollars go to pay for the system. We should demand that it work for students who can't afford or choose not to go to private school.

Enrolling his daughters in a public school does nothing to fix our broken public school system. Show me one mother and father who doesn't want the best education the family can afford.

Considering the number of hate crimes that have been occuring since Obama has been elected I think that this is a great choice.

Wow, judging by the comments here I guess Michelle and Barack should put the safety of their daughters at risk and disrupt the workings of a public school with secret service agents or their hypocrites.

I voted for this man due to his intelligence and the judgment he has thus far displayed. He and his wife are sending their daughters to a private school which already has children of diplomats in attendance and is much more able to handle the security aspects of their safety than a public school – an excellent decision, as their safety should be paramount.

Their children need to be protected from the unbalanced, disturbed people out there, who are no longer able to vent their bigotry and frustrations by attending McCain-Palin rallies.

There's a high level of security and privacy that is needed for those girls and a private school is the only way that can happen. How can anyone even comment that the president of the US's kids should go to public schools nowadays?

All of you criticizing the Obama's choice of school need to just shut the hell up. You sound so petty. They did what they felt was in the best interest from an educational AND safety standpoint ( Something that THE PRESIDENT has to worry about on a bigger scale than average parents) . If it were some of you haters were in the same position as the Obama's you would do the SAME thing. It's utterly amazing that some of you idiots find fault in a president elect and his family vetting both private and public schools for their children and choosing a private one, that Bill and sent sent Chelsea to, and the Secret Service is familiar with as well. Then again, it's not that amazing to believe that some of you would find fault in this. You are probably the same tools that listen to Limbaugh, Hannity, and other neocon blowhards and voted for Bush twice. GET A LIFE, neocons ( along with the fresh ideas) maybe someone will take you seriously again.

Support for public schools and actually attending one are different things. The school system in DC is horrible, quite possibly the worst in the country. I don't think it's feasible for the girls to go to a public school considering security and everything that's involved. Instead of railing him for this decision, please name former president's children that have gone to public schools.
