Senior adviser David Axelrod says it will take the 'best people we can find' to carry out Obama's economic plan.

(CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama's top adviser insisted Sunday that Obama's economic plan would be big enough to handle the country's financial challenges, but he declined to speculate about how large the plan would need to be.

During the presidential campaign, Obama proposed a $175 billion stimulus package over a two-year period, but some of his economic advisers have said recently that the package would need to be much larger.

Asked if Obama would scale up the package, given the economic conditions, Obama's incoming senior adviser, David Axelrod, said he thinks Obama is "going to do what's necessary."

"I'm not going to throw a figure out here. What he said is, he wants a plan big enough to deal with the large challenges we face. And I think there's a growing consensus across the spectrum among economists that we're going to have to do something big," Axelrod said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Obama on Saturday offered an outline of his economic recovery plan to create 2.5 million jobs by 2011, saying American workers will rebuild the nation's roads and bridges, modernize its schools and create more sources of alternative energy.

Details of the plan are still being worked out by his economic team, Obama said, but he hopes to sign the two-year, nationwide plan shortly after taking office January 20.

Obama noted he will need support from both Democrats and Republicans to pass such a plan, and said he welcomes suggestions from both sides of the aisle.

Keep up the nonsense and rhetoric, Republicans, and you will continue to stay in the minority, losing even more members (me included).
OR
You can help work towards finding solutions, as Obama is trying to do for our country. Most Americans choose the latter and leaders who work together.

Annie, Atlanta   November 23rd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

I just hope whatever President Obama decides to do when the time comes, it's enough to help restore what the Republicans have destroyed.

And what is our current president doing? Are his off shore and Swiss bank accounts and those of his friends more than flush after ripping us blind the last eight years? Is that what happened to the $9B in cash that disappeared early on in Iraq?

To clairify my first posted comment, I am NOT racist in any way. My point is ANYONE who enters our country legally, ie; GreenCard, applying for citizenship, etc, should be welcomed and have all the opportunities as anyone else. Just don't expect to be rewarded for breaking into our country illeaglly and taking those benefits and jobs for those already here or working towards being a citizen.

It really dosent matter WHERE they come from or why they are here(jobs, etc). This applies to all. No exceptions!!!

Housing prices, stagnant wages, high interest rates, and high energy costs led us into this economic chasm. To find our way out of this mess, we must travel the same roads that brought us here.

These folks are trilateral and council of foreign relations members. Their goal is to destroy the sovereignty of the US borders and form a n Americas of the western hemispere. David Rockefeller said if he's accused of the goal of wanting to destroy the sovereighty of OUR borders, then he's proud of the accusation. One world order and one global monetary system and a depreciating lifestyle of Americans to finance other people of other lands. That is their intent. They do NOT support the constitution. Never have. The intent........just the ACLU was intended is to create a problem through disruption and allow THEM to fix it. That's how it works. The sad part is, no one beleives it. That is exactly how they want you to think. The news media and entertainment world is dominated by atheist humanist........They shall not succeed. The lord will have final say.

jimmy   November 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Obama, those who have the high obscene income to loose, want you to not tax it or bail out the big firms who caused this problem. Don't listen to them — keep on your path. Tax them and also tax gas to get the US treasury back on track and to get America less dependent on oil.

So, tax the rich AND tax gas? Don't poor people buy gas, too? Let's just raise everyone's income taxes to 50% and get it over with...that's where we're headed anyway. The only fix is to stop spending, and we won't be doing that anytime soon.

Immigrants are people that come to this country with all their documents in order and according to US Immigration laws. What we are talking about here is "illegal aliens", these are people that come, most of them across the border, take away our jobs because since they are illegal they are paid less. They also are taking advantage of our healthcare system and education system besides being a great source of identity theft, they do not pay taxes, you and I do. So you see, they do not provide anything for us, as a matter of fact, they take away from us.

What has to be done is secure our borders, all the illegal immigrants get them out of our country, heavy fines and jail for those who employ them and if they want to come they should come legally, go through the process as many of others have done.

Obama doesn't have the courage or the sense to get us out of this mess. He will in fact not create more jobs simply by taxing the heck out of the business owners. As a business owner who is always looking for good employees, I will have to cut my workforce to handle the tax burden. My plan would be to make welfare only available to working people or the elderly or disabled. We could reduce the amount paid to them according to their income. Now, people who draw welfare don't work and have way too much time on their hands to get into trouble, (crime). Also, I would like to see drug tests in public housing projects, if they test positive, no brainer, kick them out. In order to get people to work again, we've got to make welfare what it should be, a crutch, not a fricking wheelchair.

Finally it is people like you who got Obama elected, most American's are sick and tired of the vitriolic colloquia that is the Republican Party and it's far right wing.

I applaud and thank you for your efforts in getting Obama elected, you and your cohorts have done the country a great service. You have shown that America still believe in positivism and hopefulness, your rhetoric has proven once again that short sighted, fearful, doomsayers such as you are marginal at best.

During the primaries Obama showed the world his grandiosity. I think he needs a reality check. This is the problem with narcissism,- every thing can be fixed, every thing has to be bigger and better, he will offer grand plans and leave people feeling disappointed. Listen to what he is saying now – millions of jobs created, the economy fixed – this is just a sampling of his grandiose thinking. I don't recall JFK offering the country a silver platter, but then again, JFK was a true leader.

The good time of the 90's under Bill CLinton will be here again. Obama's recovery plan will have an immediat impact I believe. The sluggish ecenomy will start to briskly recover by the middle of Dec. of 08; and it would not be surprising to see the dow goes to about 10,000 again by year end.

This is the most comprehensive plan since the 30's.

I am amazed that there are some people crying that what Obama proposes is a "socialized economy" on their dollar. So you think corporate welfare is okay. What about sending billions of dollars of aid to foreign countries? And spending...if you look at history you will find that Republicans have been the ones responsible for increased spending. You want to point the finger and say Democrats tax tax spend. Republicans borrow borrow spend. That's why my kids and grandkids will have to sell off parts of America to pay off all of our debt.

Former republican army wife   November 23rd, 2008 3:04 pm ET

My goodness people, can we ever get past the silliness? Does anyone really care about Obama's aunt? There are millions of illegal immigrants here. How, in any way whatsoever does this affect the Obama presidency? This is pathetic, bitter, sore-loser, silliness! Illegal immigrants, should be dealt with, however to keep complaining about one in a sea of millions is kinda sad. I really feel bad for these people who just can't let go of their bitterness about their candidate losing. This is a news story about the economy, yet one troll always has something to say about some obscure campaign argument. Get over it people. Complaining about Obamas aunt isn't going to fix the economy, not going to get Obama out of office, it's not going to help end the war. It's old news!!!!!

Eisenhower warned us about the parasitic military industrial complex 47 years ago. It has grown astronomically since then and put our nation into over 10 trillion dollars in debt. Dismantle it, and bring all US troops home from abroad. That should pump about $800 billion per year into the productive economy.

As long as he stops putting former clinton administration people in his, as well as keeps people like the former NY Treasury Secretary out, he might do ok, but the way things are going, he's gonna pull the same / more stuff that clinton did, and contrary to popular belief President Bill Clinton, his administration, and the Democrats are what caused this economic crisis.

Presidential effects on an economy lag 4-10 years behind their implementation of economic plans, and Clinton had nothing to do with the surplus of the 90s. That came entirely from Reagan and Bush Sr's economic plans.

If it weren't for GW Bush's tax cuts, we would have had this crisis start around the time they were implemented, but instead it was staved off for some time and could have been averted but alas, it was not.

FreeNLovIt   November 23rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Tax breaks for creating jobs here and keeping them here.

It seems that my Economics major make me so much smarter then some people here. This can't be.
Steve
- So cutting taxes on working Americans is discouraging work?
-You say lower taxes but are against tax cuts?
-From the moment you work you ARE paying taxes, from the moment you spend you ARE paying taxes, if you haven't figured that out you need better education.

Sandy
-Every nation, during economic hard times has seen the worst in it accuse the foreigners, (the US, Germany,etc..) So keep going down that path.
-Every study (you know actual proof?) has shown that in the long run immigration labor has created more work for the simple reason that it creates demand (you know what the firm need to actually produce something and hire people?)
-If you make it unprofitable for the US companies to compete you destroy the US economy. If you believe that you can live in autonomy go ask China in the 60's, go ask Zimbabwe.

I thought this was not rocket science until I read some of you guys post, apparently it is.

Obama, do what you know is right - don't listen to the 'experts' on the trying to get you off track to fill their own Wall Street/oil/auto interests. The Fix has to come from the bottom, up. Not from the top, down. The bailouts are not working. Get those Anti-Trust laws back and let the giants, who caused the problem, fall. Get people jobs and income and their spending will get the economy going. Get money to finance your plans from incremental taxing of income of the millionaires who own 95 % of the nations wealth, also from taxing gasoline at the pump (keep it just below $4) - will get us off oil dependancy and into alternate energy. Tax luxury items, remove tax from staple foods.

Allan   November 23rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Steve, we tried that for the last two decades and it has destroyed America, and led to the people choosing Democratic Party control for all branches of the government.

If you can find a Fortune 500 company that actually pays a 35% tax rate, I will personally come be your servant. The tax code is so full of loopholes and incentives that American corporations actually end up paying the second LOWEST net effective tax rate in the industrialized world.

Just keep lying and watch your precious Republican party shrivel away to a radical fringe element. Oh wait, they already are.

Lynn in NM   November 23rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Of course he will. Raising taxes is the number one goal. To create more jobs – start taxing the companies who take their business overseas, and out of the country. If the credit card companies can't hire people in the US to do their collection calls, they don't need to receive part of the bailout funds. Oh wait, then there would be no need for a bailout. They scream that people aren't paying their bills, but they won't hire Americans. Makes sense to their minds, I suppose. Cut NAFTA, too. That's another bonus Clinton left us and Hillary loves.

SICKandTIRED!   November 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Some Americans are whinning, gripping and complaining about where all the money is going to come from for rebuilding our own economy, something that will actually benefit us.

When we are spending at least $10bn every month in Iraq alone for the last 5 years which amounts to at least $ 600bn, something that we as a People of America are not benefiting from, I don't hear anyone ask where is that money coming from. The truth is every month, from Janauary to December, $120bn is pretty much wasted.

We seem not to question the source of our finances when it is been used for something that is unprofitable to the United States i.e Iraq war. But when it is been spent to help our own economy such as building our infrastructure, bailing out the auto industry, renewable sources of energy like the President -elect said, people are questioning the spending.
Stupidity is an understatement in my view for those criticizing this move by President-elect Obama.
I am for anything that will Help this economy and against anything that will be a waste of money.

Ray Fisher   November 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I have always jokingly taken credit for things never under my control therefore, I will take credit for the Clinton balanced budget since I braced then Representative Bill Richardson at a town hall in New Mexico years ago to fix the budget and begin paying off our debts. Sometime later, Clinton hired Robert Rubin who bought back old debt with new lower interest debt, balanced the budget and we had a surplus. Not one to waste a chance a glory, I claim credit ergo can I please have another chance??? Mr. Rubin is one of Obama's advisors and one of the best ever so can America enjoy his wisdom just once more???

trish, nc   November 23rd, 2008 1:13 pm ET

At least it will be a change from the past eight years, which has gotten us into this mess.

Conservatives should study both current news and history to see that:

A.) The GOP JUMPED at bailouts - and Bush is still in office, if you are looking forward to a socialist economy, you can thank them first.

B.) This is not SOCIALISM. Any self-respecting socialist I've ever read about would laugh in your face at the suggestion it is.

I can see the vindictiveness and spite that began under the Cheney/Rove dynasty will continue. Too bad for this country.

Susan   November 23rd, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Sandy – Pa., I agree, but I go one step farther. We need to find a way to bring the rest of the world UP to our standards, not allow our big businesses to go there and get rich off the backs of poor labor that can be worked like slaves.

I recall about 15 years ago or even more talking with a visitor here from Mexico. She said that the big American companies come to their country and build factories. Their workers live in paper shacks around the plants, so that they can sleep close by and save time going home. She said that they work them 16 even 18 hours a day seven days a week for little of nothing. She said that if the people complain, they tell them to leave that there are people waiting in line for their jobs. I was appalled. That sounds like turn of the 20th c. U.S. labor without unions.

We fought to change that evil and won. Now our companies go to 3rd world countries, and repeat the same deplorable policy of working people like slaves with no benefits to anyone but themselves. If we learn from history, we know that this is unacceptable!

Man's inhumanity to man must end, and we are the only ones who can end it! We, the People, of the world... beginning with We, the People, of this country. Call me a dreamer... I probably am. But I think Obama has the drive to make this dream of world equality and peace come true... not in socialism or any other ism, but democracy.... fair government and equal opportunity the world over for all the People, not just the few.

Sandy in Pa.

Sounds like good sound Conservative principals. Do you REALLY think Obama and his Dems will support any such ideals?

From what I have seen so far, all I hear out of Obama and Pelosi, BAIL THEM OUT. Everyone who has mismanaged thier companies in the last 12 years will be rewarded with a bail out.

EXCEPT the common taxpayer who is up to his or her butt in debt because we can not afford to survive without charging or borrowing.

I heard this morning, Pelosi wants to give the auto makers 75 billion now instead of the 25 they asked for. Whats up with that? Pelosi and Obama owe the UAW some votes do they?????

Obama idea of fixing the economy is printing more money and giving it to the white collars of this country.

Why do they just not give every american a share of the bailout money? If you have a mortage, that money MUST go to pay that, direct deposit right to your loan institution.

Hello again! I agree with Sandy and Joe The Drummer inasmuch as I wish our government would adopt the same policies. We too have seen our work devalued occupation by occupation through the shortsighted policies of the neocon element. What our government failed to realize is that when you hurt your tax base, your economy is under serious threat of sinking completely. Now our government is talking about running a deficit in order to 'stay the course'.

Due to some short-sighted changes made to attract voters, the Conservative Government of Canada is breaking its promise to not run a deficit.

There are many many more Canadians now that are a paycheque away from being homeless thanks to these policies, and it can get cold up here. I have great respect for your country's choice of your next President, and wish you well. Rock on America! :D

Hello everyone;

Oh! but that should not surprise anyone, right?Course not!,...wait until pres elected Obama takes the helm in Washington,...he-he THEN! IS WHEN WE ARE GOING TO DROP LIKE LEAD DOWN -DOWN TO THE DEEPST ABYS OF FINANCIAL TOTAL OBLITERATION.And then, we become the weak nation as our enemies wanted us to be just like almost magic!

I Told you Obama is a 'TROJAN HORSE FACTOR' for the downfal of our great country,...nobody want to look hard on this , everybody is like still hypnotized by the 'Obama collective-syndrom' ,...pity!,...we are aproaching the point of no return.

Not too far in the near future all those COCOZOIDS, who voted for Obama, will wish to have a TIME MACHINE to go back in time and undo what is done.

Well, sleep well in your illlusions, until the big crack emerges.

Sincerely,
Daniel Cabrera

Report positive news and people will follow. America is in a depression we need some positive news. Send a positive message across the airway. We are tired of hearing about the hate, one or two people actions are not that of everyone.

simple – lower taxes. obama's grand marxist plan to stimulate the economy is to steal from the productive and handout to the unproductive. tax and spend spend spend.
like usual liberal policy, we'll certainly be paying for it for decades to come. his "tax cuts" – which are really redistributive welfare, will discourage working. it seems obama's only answer to getting what he wants in any industry is TAX TAX TAX.
taxes don't create jobs.

give us an ACTUAL tax cut, not "tax credit" welfare, and slash the absurd 35% corporate tax rate so we can be competitive with the rest of the world. the government and the unions have latched on and leeched off of the productivity of america and we need to burn those leeches off before we can get healthy again.

Are there any people that run a small business in Obama's crew.
Someone that started one and made it go? You know one of the most important business people. Its kind of a joke that he is only bringing in BIG business and investors.
Sad.. Another broken promise.

Tony   November 23rd, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Marie banderas   November 23rd, 2008 12:27 pm ET

JOBS,JOBS,JOBS, and HEALTH CARE, fix those 1st ! Then we the people can more easily stand up for you Obama..without these, the people have nothing ! America comes 1st..Take care of us 1st, then worry about the rest of the world..For if there is no us, then there is no reason for you..Charity begins at home..we need JOBS, HEALTH CARE..we need to be manufacturing things HERE, and getting paid decent wages to do so..FINE companys that are sending our jobs away..then expecting us to keep supporting them with taxes etc, that we cant pay if have no jobs..and if we the people cant take care of our own familys, then there is no one left to take care of other countries either..AMERICA 1st....

Joe the Drummer   November 23rd, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Going back to Americas traditional trade policies of tariffs would fix everything in Americas economy. Free trade and globilization has driven down wages and cost many good paying American jobs thus driving down Americas purchasing power. No matter how much you cut taxes for the wealthy so they can supposedly create jobs when wages are too low very few goods are sold. Even a drummer knows an economy has to have buyers to work. Protectionism rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

Sandy - PA   November 23rd, 2008 12:19 pm ET

I think it's pretty simple if you want to create more jobs:
1) STOP bringing people from every country on earth into the US to take our jobs. End The H-1 and L-1 programs, and others like them.
2) STOP outsourcing our jobs. Make it unprofitable for US companies to outsource jobs. End tax breaks for companies that outsource jobs, and add news taxes, levies, or whatever it takes.
3) SECURE the US/Mexico border. An estimated 1 million people are crossing the border every year, and many US companies view these people as cheap labor, and they take advantage.

Do these 3 things, and there will be jobs here. This is not rocket science.

Soon to be President Obama has started right out of the gate to get us on the right track. Refreshing.
