Bill Richardson is expected to be named as the Secretary of Commerce, two Democrats tell CNN.

(CNN) — Two Democrats close to the transition tell CNN that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is now expected to be nominated as Secretary of Commerce by President-elect Barack Obama, pending the final vetting process.

Richardson, one of the leading Hispanics in the Democratic Party, had been seeking the Secretary of State post but lost out to Sen. Hillary Clinton. Obama aides have told CNN that Obama is “on track” to nominate Clinton as his secretary of state after Thanksgiving.

The precise timing on the announcement of Richardson’s appointment is unclear.

Two Richardson advisers said privately that Richardson had been hoping State would be his prize after facing political heat for picking Obama over Clinton, but the governor is willing to accept another post in hopes that he will move up in the Cabinet later in the administration.

Richardson served as Energy Secretary and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in the Clinton administration.

Obama’s pick will now mean that at least three former rivals from the Democratic presidential primaries will be in senior posts in the Obama administration — Richardson, Clinton and Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

Way to go Bill!

Socialism What? Thank you…..Some people are just natural born Haters, no matter what happens!!! In their eyes everything that is wrong with this country is the Pres. Elect's fault.. They need to get over it and try and be positive and help put this country back together, but that would be too much like right!!! YES WE CAN!!

Saad in Sierra Leone   November 23rd, 2008 5:31 pm ET

A US government that is made up of individuals with the reguired international recognition and credibility and a multilateral approach to solving the pressing global problems. That by itself is change (from the recent past) worthy of commendation. I only hope and pray that these former rivals in the DNC primaries have by now dropped the curtain on that phase of their lives and will step up to the challenge to work as a team.

Bush will be gone, Jan, 21. 2008. That is change. I hope you can get over this in a manly way. Change is coming! If he pick every one on the Clinton team it will be change from what it is now. We are going to hell in a hand bag fast.

amorew   November 23rd, 2008 4:55 pm ET

I believe Obama made a big mistake by selecting Hillary. she is not qualified for this position.

jack   November 23rd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Richardson would have been the better choice for SOS. Hillary should have been the Health, Education Welfare secretary . At least one goal was accomplished, getting her out of the Senate.

caryn   November 23rd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

He'd have really kicked butt as Sec of State… too bad Obama chose Hill for that one. I highly recommend picking up Richardson's book. He's chalked full of experience, and I'm a Republican!

Andreea MD   November 23rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Hello ! I will like your onest , logical answer.Forget about being Republican or Democrat.Think about America about your needs. We know Mitt Romney who is himThis guy is brilliant in business and he sense America s economy and he thought that will be good to be president. His election was run with his money. He knew to administrate his money and if makes sense to go further. On another hand Hillary Clinton big politician with big money ( dontations) spent everything and finally she was in minus millions and millionsIf you remember everybody advice her to stop her campaign.Because she is ambitions and determineted for Americas cause like she said she had continued her campaign. And of course she was next to Obama to get her money back mostrly of time. Now my question is who is better for America in this financial crisis a Politician who spennd another people money or a smart business people who knows to make money and who knows to administrate money properly?

Maggie from Virginia   November 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

People are so silly. "where's the change, he's picking all Clinton people". If Obama is half as good as Clinton, he will be way better than Bush 1 & 2.

worriedmom   November 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I think the got used for the Latino vote and then gets a slap in the face when Hillary gets nominated for the position he wanted. Politics is a very strange bedfellow. Doesn't matter who you vote for, everyone is a puppet. I just thank God that I don't have to live my life like that.

MONA   November 23rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER CLINTON ADMINISTRATION TO ME.
I HAD HOPED THAT RICHARDSON WOULD BE SOS, NOT HILLARY
LEAVE H.CLINTON IN THE SENATE PLEASE.

Aida   November 23rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Poor choice. But, this turncoat weaseled his way in to Obama's circle. Mexican-Americans do NOT see him as one of our own. He will turn on anyone to advance his personal agenda.Sad.

DOC   November 23rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Quite frankly, regarding Mr. Richardson's education, political offices held, and personal record of accomplishments, he would have made a far better Secretary of State than Hillary Clinton.

Ms. Clinton sat on the boards of Wal-Mart and several other corporations which one would think would have a greater appeal to serve as commerce secretary.

Me thinks the wheel was a bit squeaky…

Jeffery   November 23rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

This is a great position for Judas! There is no way that a back stabber could have been the Secretary of State. Great job Obama. I voted for you, but you have to keep this back stabber at bay. :-)

geb md   November 23rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Clinton Fringer   November 23rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

why do some people hate obama. he will be your president. so deal with it
—————————————————————————-

Probably the same reason people hate Bush, yet they didn't feel they needed to deal with it……..

If I was Obama I wouldn't turn my back on Richardson. Once a backstabber always a backstabber.

Willy Brown   November 23rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

ME IN FL   November 23rd, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Bill should be grateful that he will get the SOC position. He just went with Obama because of his political ambitions wanting the SOS position.

I hope Judas learned his lesson!! Regarding being loyal, he will not be, because he is not even loyal to himself much less to others.

Obama you are putting up a great cabinet!!!! Keep you eyes open with Judas!!

Anna, ATL   November 23rd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Hillary would never run for President in 2012 against a Democratic imcumbent (even if she stayed in the Senate) unless Obama voluntarily resigns or chooses not to seek reelection, but that would only admit failure, and this is not likely to happen.

If it did, I guarantee all of you the Democratic ticket is doomed in 2012. And yes, her candidacy would be one sure way to get rid of her for good.

Keep dreaming, Hillary haters!

There IS hope for the future>>>   November 23rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

To: Southern Hottie, The current administration DOES NOT run in the second term against the current emcumbent. Only another party can run. Obama will be the only Democrat that CAN run so, Hillary cannot run against him no matter what position (if any) she does hold. Just the same for all other Dems…

CD   November 23rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Richardson should've gotten the position of State. Sooner or later, Mr Obama is going to start acting like the leader of his party instead of holding the door and catering to the Clintons. Last week when she started hesitating about the State job, he should've named Richardson. He's looking weak.

Anna, ATL   November 23rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

And when I say Hillary is the best choice, I of course mean for SOS.
Obama knows what he is doing.

And my first post popped up twice.
Oops.
Batting .1000 today. sorry

Oh, someone said no African-Americans so far chosen?
Not true. Eric Holder, his choice for Atty General, is African-American.

I am proud of Obama; he is truly proving himself his own man.

Thank you for recognizing the gift and potential of Hillary.

list of Cabinet positions in order of importance and visibility:

Secretary of State
Secretary of Defense
Secretary of Treasury
Attorney General
Secretary of Homeland Security
Secretary of The Interior
Secretary of Agriculture
Secretary of Commerce ( lol the Traitors job)
*Secretary of Labor
*Secretary of Health and Human Services
Secretary of HUD
Secretary of Transportation
*Secretary of Energy
Secretary of Education
Secretary of Veterans Affairs

*denotes cabinet position that could outrank the importance of SOC, in these times.

LMAO So Richardson gambled and lost it seems!

Tracy, IL   November 23rd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

I really love how everyone has this crystal ball that allows them to know what decisions Obama makes are good and which are bad. All I can say is if you have the solution to our problems, it is your PATRIOTIC DUTY to apply for a job in the new administration. Otherwise, why don't you give him about 100 days to start governing before you begin your talk of doom and gloom or begin your talk of greatest president ever????

To the person who said what about Africans?? Look up the guy who Obama offered Attorney General- last time I checked he is black.

To those who think Bill Clinton should be given a cabinet position: learn your basics of government before speaking. Due to every single cabinet member being on the list of presidential succession, anyone who is not qualified to be president or would violate the Constitution by becoming president, CANNOT be on the cabinet. Bill Clinton already served his two terms. This goes for Arnold, too (not natural born)!!!!

JB   November 23rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Hillary should have been president. Obama basically bashed the Clintons all through the primaries and now he is basically creating a Clinton cabinet. What a fraud.

John   November 23rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

To Aliou-

What about Africans??? He is the president of the United States, not Africa. If you mean African-Americans, is he not himself an African-American. Last I checked, the next Attorney General is also going to be an African-American. Let's not make this about race too.

Anna, ATL   November 23rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

For all the unwavering support of our President-Elect, there sure doesnt seem a lot of confidence in his choices.

HILLARY IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR OUR COUNTRY, OUR IMAGE AND OUR SECURITY.
END OF THE ISSUE.
And the Clintons have always enjoyed international popularity…even with the WAR in Bosnia! How 'bout that?

Hamas laughed at Jimmy Carter when they met last Spring. Our foes don't respect our Democracy, people.
They are all about control!
Their condition of women in some of these countries is living testament to that.

Well, Hillary is ready, and a LIVING TESTAMENT of the beauty of our Democracy.

John   November 23rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Isn't it amazing how much change looks like the same old game? I thought Clinton was term limited? Well at least his team will carry on.

Clinton Supporter   November 23rd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Dear Mitch (the very first commenter):

Yes, the PUMAs ARE thrilled. This is nothing more, and fortunately, nothing less, than a return of the Clinton Administration, complete with a real live Clinton.

Now, I'm delighted that Obama never did have any young, fresh-faced inexperienced people in his pocket to call on in order to make "Change" a reality. He sure did fool you people! By now he's probably moved to right of Hillary, right on over to George.

I conclude that "change" refers to a reintroduction of good manners. I'm all for that.

Nowadays I'm enjoying the "no drama" image he's trying to build. This from the guy who parted the Red Sea, accepted the nomination in a football stadium complete with Roman columns!

"No drama?" Give me a break!

I hoped in change like everybody else. The big problems was with our goverment( coruption, personal interest, old people who doesnt know why they are in the congress, Clinton dinasty , etc.And hey we are after two years of fighting to elect Obama with big hope for 21 century, istorical moment for entire world, Clinton administration is back all that old patern.Where are those genial business people of America who knows to handle business.Do we need politicens like Pelosi or Clinton .Guys wake up now there are not money for politiciens.Dont worry about poor Clinton future he took care with his fondation .

Kara   November 23rd, 2008 3:35 pm ET

to prove my point about SOC being a joke job….without using google can any of you name who the current SOC is???? LMAO EXAAACTLY!!!!!

Luther Powell   November 23rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

So, after Judas "Bill's" betrayal of the Clinton's, Secretary of Commerce is all he gets. Joe Biden didn't endorse either Hillary or Barack but still got the VP slot. Hillary ripped into Barack mercilessly and still gets SOS. The moral of the tale is "be true to your friends".

Kara   November 23rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Being a PUMA, I am thrilled!!! I knew that Richardson was a turncoat and he is getting his just reward!!! What a lame man he is. SOC is a joke job. Used only for "political payback"!! It is STILL gonna be a Clinton Administration!!

Wisest one of All   November 23rd, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Looks like the racist empty suit hussein nobama has picked another business as usual/politicians as usual D. C. insider. The only change that moron nobama is going to give the U. S. is that he is going change us from the worthless bush administration to the catastrophic nobama administration. Proven fact!

IndyVoter   November 23rd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

To all who are dissapointed w/Commerce Sect'y for Richardson:

This is a great position to have! Out of 60 million people in the USA, President-Elect Obama is choosing Richardson to be 1 of less than 20 people to run the agency tasked with making sure that business and commerce are growing and healthy in this country. This is especially important now with the economy the way it is! Our economy is going nowhere but up and Richardson will be a very big part of it. This appointment will be a positive force for Hispanics too, especially those who have small businesses or who would like to start one.

Look at the good side of things instead of having a prideful and/or entitlement attitude. Richardson will be a fine Commerce Secretary.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   November 23rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

GREAT CHOICE BECAUSE RICHARDSON KNOWS THE POLITICAL ARENA AND WILL SERVE OUR COUNTRY WELL.

The clinton people just forced OBAMA to choose her as SOS with the media help just to block the way to Bill Richardson.
Even though she is well qualified for the job and I have no problem with that I think it's sort of a revenge from Bill and Hillary for not getting his support during the primary.

mark from new york   November 23rd, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Huck   November 23rd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

All the residents of New Mexico should rejoice because we now rid ourselves of a Governor who cared little about our state. He gave tax rebates that he knew the state couldn't afford just to deliver the state for Democrats. Throughout his tenure as our governor, he has done nothing but prove he wanted to use this as a stepping stone to either the presidency or a significant cabinet post. Best of luck and goodbye to Bill Richardson!!

All these people around Obama are very good picks. It is going to be amazing to see a Goverment ran by smart people instead of friends….We have to get out these mess and Obama is willing to sit down and listen to others.

Bill, ca   November 23rd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Why would Bill Clinton be interested in a cabinet position, he is getting a nice presidents pension and has his speaking engagements and his foundation.

Sarah Palin will also get a lot of millions thanks to her rhetoric campaihn speeches.

Richardson will be alright for a while with secretary of commerce.

Jack   November 23rd, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Obama ran as a candidate of change yet all he has done so far is name all of the same old players from the Clinton administration to his adminstration. I was hoping that he would bring some fresh faces to Washington when he kept talking about change. It appears that Obama did nothing but talk about "change" yet the only change he is going to bring us is a change in which party is pointing the fingers and placing the blame. So much for all the hope for a brand new world in Washington. It looks like it will be the same people from the Clinton years running the country with the same old Democratic party.

Kevin   November 23rd, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Good pick….. Richardson will be the next President now that Hillary is out. Obama loves this guy.

Richard Larson   November 23rd, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Commerce is the perfect place to position the Governor. He is a known quantity when it comes to successful representation of this nation's international policies. He is also known and respected by some of our enemies as being a fair and even-handed negotiator. I would also state that if it were necessary for contact to be made under cover, Richardson would be perfectly positioned, as Sec. of Commerce to carry out a mission that maybe Hillary, at State could not be seen as being involved in. The perfect one-two combination.

I do know this, State and Commerce must work hand-in-hand often times to effect the international policy of the president and that Bill Richardson is a team player.

Another thing is this, I am not certain that Hillary will be content to stay at state for up to eight years. I am almost certain that she will only stay four and even possibly less and that Richardson will be the perfect replacement.

Tweety   November 23rd, 2008 2:45 pm ET

The secretary of commerce job is responsible for job creation. Seems like Richardson is getting a good cabinet post. Obama wants to create 2.5 million jobs in the next few years and will have to work closely with Richardson as secretary of commerce to get that done.

Craig - Hastings, MN   November 23rd, 2008 2:42 pm ET

WRONG position. It should be Sec. of State and NOT that UNQUALIFIED Clinton woman along with hubby "Bubba." Talk about "Change" and what do you get? Clinton III.Real smart Obama. Political payoff if I ever saw one.

no drama, CA   November 23rd, 2008 2:41 pm ET

I would rather have Richardson for SOS. Why did he not get it ?

Sara Shamili   November 23rd, 2008 2:39 pm ET

He deserved to get Secretary of State position. Unfortunately it shows that for Obama, enemies are more valuable and rewarded than friends. If Richardson knew it when he endorsed Obama, and was so much attacked by Hillary and her croines, he would have not bothered. It seems that Obama's cabinet will be dominated by hawks. Maybe there would be also place for Rumsfeld.

Glen   November 23rd, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Hillary carried a bit more clout. She was ex senator. Richardson was only Governor and former sec and UN…he will be SOS next term of Obama and Hillary will have 4 yrs to get ready for after Obama…it's all a big plan…

Sandy   November 23rd, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Richardson should do well as Sec of Commerce. Hillary will be very good as Sec of State. Good choices!

Dr.Mimi De La Cruz   November 23rd, 2008 2:34 pm ET

RICHARDSON IS A GOOD MAN

AND PART LATINO TO BOOT.

CCT   November 23rd, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Richardson is loyal? He was best buds with Bill Clinton. They watched New Years Day football together Jan 1,08. Then he comes out for Obama. Please define LOYAL for us. Loyal would have been to make no endorsement.

David   November 23rd, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Looking strictly at the qualifications, Richardson would be a much better Secretary of State than Hillary Clinton. Unfortunately, as with the Lieberman amnesty, political calculations seem to have taken priority over qualifications and what's best for the country.

Whatever.   November 23rd, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Just look at New Mexico. That place is a disaster. I know, I lived there for five years.

Richardson is out for himself.

joe   November 23rd, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Lol Margo, Richardson is not loyal. The Clintons made him, and he dropped her and endorsed Obama in the Primary. I really like Bill Richardson, but don't tell me he's loyal.

Kenny   November 23rd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Bill Richardson should have been the choice for Secretary of State. His experience dealing with foreign nationals along with his efforts in getting hostages released make him the right choice. The man has been nominated for the Nobel Prize 3 times! I think HIllary is also a good choice, but just not the best one. The one thing I must say is that it seems that intellligent and capable people are going to play major roles in this administration. Man, how long have we needed that? Good luck to President-elect Obama and his cabinet. I feel good going forward.

Linda   November 23rd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

OOOHHHH!

"Two Richardson advisers said privately that Richardson had been hoping State would be his prize after facing political heat for picking Obama over Clinton, but the governor is willing to accept another post in hopes that he will move up in the Cabinet later in the administration."

Well, Billie boy, that may have just ended your prospects all together. Obama insists on LOYALTY. And you just whined and complained in public that you expected payment for selling out the Clintons, even after breaking your promise to them.

And what arrogance, you'll settle for this position, with expectations of moving up later. OH. With this sentiment shared by YOUR Advisers, you showed why you not only don't deserve S O S, deserve, funny word, the Position IS WAY OVER YOUR SKILL SET, but you show a dangerous trait that shows why you shouldn't be in any Cabinet position.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   November 23rd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Richardson should be Secretary of State…. Hillary has ZERO experience for the job, and I'm sick of her grasping feelings of ENTITLEMENT. I wouldn't appoint her a dog catcher.

BIG MISTAKE FOR OBAMA

FreeNLovIt   November 23rd, 2008 2:16 pm ET

I'm so glad Hillary accepted the Secretary of State position. Now, i can sleep better when Obama gets those 2 AM phone calls. The Clintons will be a great filter against un-necessary demands upon Obama.

Obama for President   November 23rd, 2008 2:16 pm ET

I wish Richardson would be Secretary of State. I think he has more foreign policy experience than Clinton. Kerry would have been better, too. They both supported Obama strongly when it counted, and Clinton opposed him. Go figure.

nancydrew1711   November 23rd, 2008 2:14 pm ET

do you people ever look at facts?? i live in new mexico and it is high in poverty, dwi drivers, no real commerce. obviously obama is just looking to fill debts with who he is picking. lots of change, right back to clinton's administration. good job.

FreeNLovIt   November 23rd, 2008 2:10 pm ET

FreeNLovIt   November 23rd, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Bill Richardson could hardly face up to heat from the Clinton camp for choosing Obama over Hillary in the primary.

Rather, he kinda winged it with his tail between his legs instead of
taking a stand as to why, when the Clintons helped take him where he is.

You have to have a strong, confident personality to Sec'y of State. If Obama thought he was cut out for it he would have given to him, because he does HAVE the experience.

Clearly, Obama thought differently.

At least there is one man on this Earth who isn't afraid of a strong confident women…or at least two- Michelle, and Hillary.

good for you, Pres-elect Barack Obama!

Very Professional and dicipline to accept the situation even though everybody knows that Gov Richardson is more qualified for SOS than Sen Clinton. But another quality he has is versatility. He move up the latter after doing a great job a Commerce.

And yes We could be looking at a Future President!! He is certainly Qualifed and he would get my Vote as Barack Did!!!!

carolflowery   November 23rd, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Seems to me, Obama is just bringing in all the people that were
pumping him up during the primaires, and HIllary is a must, he must
jkeep her under his thumb. Richardson was a judas, but hey, i didnt say that, james carville diid

Simmy   November 23rd, 2008 2:01 pm ET

I don't believe for a minute that he doesn't want the job! Who in Clinton's entourage did you talk to? (Citizen know it all!)

I think Gov. Richardson will be happy to serve, and he'll be loyal!

I don't think President Obama knew Hillary was going to go run and open her big mouth! She was merely one of the contenders. Bill Richardson was also a choice.

But when Madam MisSpeak opened her mouth, and her possee ran with the story, to avoid any more drama, President-elect was stuck with her as SOS.

She had better do a good job and not bring any extra baggage with her, or she'll be out the door within a year!

Timber (ex dem)   November 23rd, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Duh! This was the price of being a snake and betraying the Clinton's and endorsing Obama. All the rats are getting spots they were promised. Please! Also, when asked about the economy, Obama says "I will do what needs to be done to fix it". How vague is that?? No other politician could ever get away with that. I don't see Katie Couric attacking that.

Jim Jam   November 23rd, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Ya'll need to give this man a chance. I have seen "Impeach Obamb" stickers already… And he hasn't even gotten into office yet.

We all need to work together to get this country back on track, this is a smart man, give him a chance, and be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Failure with your guy at the helm is not better than success with ours…

I think Sen. Clinton would do best in the Senate..especially with more power offered to her……….

Erik, Austin TX   November 23rd, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Richardson is far more qualified to be Secretary of State than Hillary, and he should have gotten that post. For someone who obviously wants to be President, I would think remaining as a governor would be better for his political career than a post like Commerce. State would have been a good career move, but I'm not so sure Commerce would be.

Sorry. I don't get it.   November 23rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

This guy only cares about himself.

I lived in New Mexico. He hasn't done much there except give away incentives to the rich in Hollywood for making movies in his state.

That's it.

He couldn't even get rid of cockfighting.

KJ   November 23rd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

I knew all along that the only reason Richardson endorsed Obama is because he was expecting to get a big appointment out of it. Same with Kerry.

Barack Obama is his own man.

Socialism what?   November 23rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Socialism – Weren't we already dipping into socialism under President Bush and all other presidents before him? Unions, Fannie and Freddy, Welfare programs, social security, etc. etc., etc. Why is socialism now all of a sudden an Obama thing? Why is he being blamed for something that was already in place before he graduated from college.

Economy – When did the economy starting going bad? Who was in control when our economy took a dive? Why is Obama being blamed for our economy – he wasn't in office for the last 8 years?

Abortion – Did President Bush stop abortions? Did President Reagan stop abortions? What is the difference between abortion and taking an innocent life with a gun or fighting in wars where innocent children are being caught in the cross fire? Murder is murder! The bottom line is that we all have a choice and our choice should be to do the right thing – no murder, no abortion period! We have a choice, the bible states that. So don't blame Obama for choices.

You people who don't like Obama hang onto anything to hide behind the real reasons why you hate them. I'm not falling for your hate act. Get a life!

joanjuneau   November 23rd, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Obama continues to build an impressive team with great starpower. They are the best, the brightest, the most experienced and the most talented from every field. More power to all of them. Our future is looking up.

Jeff Brown   November 23rd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Bill paid his dues, he's entitled to a cabinet position…

Carrie   November 23rd, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Congratulations to Richardson, I'm sure he will do well in his new post. Obama has put together an excellent, well respected team.

SOUTHERN HOTTIE   November 23rd, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Look, Barack is not stupid. I'm glad the nod for SOS is going to Hillary. This means that in 2012 it would be absurd for her to run for the presidency against her boss. This is a very wise political move for him.
Richardson? Eh. He'll be okay as Commerce secretary.

Obama08 but...   November 23rd, 2008 1:44 pm ET

KJL- His resume is better than Obama's. It's not about resume in case you haven't already figured that out.

Obama08 but...   November 23rd, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Commerce secretary?????

What happened to Secretary of State?????

Is HiLIEary really going to get that job????

I knew I shouldn't have voted or went with Ralph.

Darn it. Should have known this was going to end up a Clinton administration after all.

DB25   November 23rd, 2008 1:43 pm ET

I used to work for the Commerce Department. I think Richardson is a great choice…he knows the ropes around the Government and would do a good job.

John   November 23rd, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Marie,

Many people are confused about the NAFTA agreement and see it as a major problem for the United States. It is actually beneficial to many Americans. There is a tarriff freeze and jobs are heading south or even further east, that part is true. The benefit comes in what the United States gets. Remember Canada? Its our largest trading partner and the largest supplier of natural resources in the world, notably ENERGY. According to NAFTA Canada must ensure 80% of its gross energy and natural resource products in 1994 levels are exported, with the soul beneficiary being the United States. Not only does it divert clean water reserves to the mid west but the hydro electricity it produces (p.s. its the largest supplier) powers most homes stretching both from the eastern to western seaboards. We might want to think twice before negotiating NAFTA, think about how badly we need that energy right now!

CAROLE   November 23rd, 2008 1:38 pm ET

I am just ecstatic that Bill Richardson is getting an extremely good post and nothing less.

I am an African-American, but felt that Bill Richardson showing his loyalty early deserves to be in an extremely good post all the long.

**The Hillary Clinton I thought I knew, would have made me happy. I just hope the one who exposed her 'sour grapes', attention hogging and power hungry personality can be contained. I belive what is smart about Hillary as SOS, she is great for the job, but NOW her PUMAs will see the real story now.

Helen K   November 23rd, 2008 1:37 pm ET

To my Children, Grand Children, and Great Grand Children:

It's a beautiful thing! In all my long life and its been long one–I have never seen a any thing like this election!!!! All those thousands and millions of people standing for hours in line to vote and then gathering for hours to see the outcome. I'm so glad that I was able to witness this.

For the younger generation who helped this happen I thank you and also for the older ones who had faith. Maybe all those companies who left the U.S. to make millions for themselves while their fellow men suffered and lost so much will have to make it up to them. The whole world was watching this happen and they are just as happy as we are. I hope you all remember this election –I don't know if there will ever be an other like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love to all PEACE FOR ALL

CCT   November 23rd, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Richardson already has the job of Brutus…knifed the Clintons in the back after all they had done for him. He could have not endorsed either Obama or Clinton and looked like the Hispanic gentleman he thinks he is. Obama would have still come courting. So, the lowly job of SOC is what he deserves.

There IS hope for the future>>>   November 23rd, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Some people are questioning the word Change. It's going to take time and just because Obama is vetting/picking former Clinton people (along with Hillary herself) does not mean there will be no change. Change is what will happen on 01.20.2009 when the current admin. is OUT! THAT IS THE REAL CHANGE!

as for being loyal look what he did to clinton he is not loyal, he did a poor job as energy sec, and he would be terrible as president. but he fits right in with the mess obama is about to make.

Joe - STL   November 23rd, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Richardson's diplomatic skills are just what is needed to help stabilize commerce, esp. with foreign countries. A good pick, IMO.

Pamma   November 23rd, 2008 1:24 pm ET

What does he know about Commerce? He has been in the PUBLIC sector TOO long.

jill   November 23rd, 2008 1:24 pm ET

what position is for Al Gore ?

arzai   November 23rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

John Edwards would be the ideal Secretary of State

Steve in Las Vegas,NV   November 23rd, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Obama is building a cabinet of the best and brightest minds no matter if they are Democrat or Republican, or former rival candidates.

We need people who can get the necessary work done and done well.

This work may take a long time to complete as it didn't happen overnight so we must be patient. Have faith, Team Obama is very disciplined as seen during the campaign. This is the sign of change to come.

Nope   November 23rd, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Disgraceful….Richardson is more experienced for the SOS job and fits Obama's policy better than Clinton.

Sammy Y   November 23rd, 2008 1:19 pm ET

is this Obamas Administration, or a Clinton Administration ?

jesuino leduino rosa   November 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

good choice , is time to get the spanishes we they deserve.

deedee   November 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I love Bill Richardson. He's done a fantastic job as governor of New Mexico. I hope too he moves up the ladder. I believe he is a man that can do anything he puts his mind too!

carment   November 23rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

J.C., I suspect the multitude of Americans who have lost their jobs, or have to work 3 and 4 jobs to meet their bills, probably feel that the Secretary of Comerce is a darned sight as important as the Secretary of State right now.

sandra Bierman   November 23rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Obama so far has used intelligent selection for his political choices — very sound. I also hope he selects Hilary for Sec. of State. What a learned and capable team he is putting together!

Rachel   November 23rd, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Bill Richardson loyal? thats laughable. People talk about the Clintons Obama better watch his back with Richardson

Susan   November 23rd, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Obama is picking an excellent cabinet!! We hope to hear very soon that HIllary Clinton is the Secretary of State.

Good going Obama!!

Ray Fisher   November 23rd, 2008 1:05 pm ET

I'd still rather see Bill as Sec. of State in his expertise but realize that politics and the Clintons in general trump common sense!!! I just hope Hillary doesn't come under more fake sniper fire or watch too many John Wayne movies. As a New Mexican, I of course am partial to Bill, not only as the governor of our state but as a person. New Mexico is a big little state, big in land area with a little population and we routinely see our elected officials in everyday locales and just shoot the bull with them. Bill is one of our good ole boys whom everyone likes not only here but around the world. By simply chatting with him, he disarms with his humor, wit and wisdom. His self-deprecating humor was evident in his campaign ads as he is just like that on a daily basis. We are always proud of Bill whether freeing our hostages or sharing a Coke and a smile. He will do America proud anyway he serves!!!

Turn Republican   November 23rd, 2008 12:59 pm ET

He's a betrayer. He betrayed Hillary and thought he'll get a chair next to Obama. Wrong he was not in Obama's mind. The person in Obama’s mind was the cheater John Edward.

Fire Hillary   November 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Waste of talent! Should go to Foggy Bottom! I'm with you Margo!

Lauren   November 23rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Who did America elect President?

It seems to be it will be Bill Clintons White House all over again, with a few exceptions.

Is that number one on Obamas list,,,
" served in the Clinton Administration"

So much for change.
Whats next for Obama, Lewinsky for intern?

60 year old white female and proud supporter of PE Obama   November 23rd, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Pieces of the jigsaw puzzle coming together nicely. Remember all you naysayers….only seven of sixteen cabinet posts have been "allocated"…lots of time to include diversity in region, race, etc.

…and for the Republicans critics…please tell what the alternative in a McCain/Palin cabinet would be like…Lieberman, Guliani, Romney, Phil Grahm….all with a 2oth century mindset!!

Texas Teacher   November 23rd, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I am quite amazed at how many people did not listen to Obama's speeches and/or went to his website to read his plans for our and the world economy.

He clearly stated that he wanted a global economy, but a fair one to Americans. He said that we should have more fair trade agreements. That countries that send products here must fairly accept our products. That taxes on imports and exports should be reflective of the other not one sided. So many more things that bring about a fair world economy where everyone profits, NOT just Big Business! I'm not an economist by any means, but I know when something sounds logical and makes sense. Obama makes sense. Read his book, The Audacity of Hope, and you will know how his mind works…. where he is coming from.

I feel Barack Obama will do what he has promised as much as he can and will be allowed to do so. Right now he has to bring our economy back to something more like normal. I think his plans sound wise. And he is surrounding himself with the wisest people he can find, not his cronnies! That alone gives me hope!

Turn Republican   November 23rd, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Obama-nation = Abomination   November 23rd, 2008 12:52 pm ET

KJL- That is Richardson's goal, but if you do a little digging around in New Mexico, you will find that there are too many skeletons rattling around down here.

But, then again, Obama, who can't even prove he was born in the U.S., did manage to get elected, so I guess anything is possible.

J.C.   November 23rd, 2008 12:51 pm ET

According to his two advisers, Governor Richardson doesn't seem very interested in being the Commerce Secretary. Although the 2007 budget for Commerce was only 6.2 billions, the smallest slice of the pie, it will be a critical component of the government in this globalization era. If he has the choice, he would most likely prefer the SOS job as diplomacy is part of his nature. It looks like he will have to work up the ladder. Commerce Secretary is exactly one step ahead of Labor Secretary. Congratulations!

edu of NOVA   November 23rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Richardson would have been an impressive SOS. However given the state of our economy, I think that commerce is just as poweful a position as SOS. Richardson will do great. i Si se puede !

Obama-nation = Abomination   November 23rd, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Another Clinton person. So much for change, but then again, I didn't want Obama's promised style of change anyway; I will gladly take a second Clinton admin over Obama's promises of Socialism.

He's doing about as well as I could have hoped with his picks, showing he's just another Dem.

ken   November 23rd, 2008 12:39 pm ET

I wonder what position Bill Clinton will get in this Cabinet.

Margo   November 23rd, 2008 12:38 pm ET

He was the one who deserved the Sec.of State nod! Gracious, no drama and loyal.

G   November 23rd, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Congrats.

Ken   November 23rd, 2008 12:32 pm ET

I believe that this is not a good choice! He has two faces and is only looking out for himself, not the American people.

He is being used to help and maintain the "Latino" voters, along with all of the ILLEGAL ALIEN supporters.

If there is an attempt for amnesty of the 12 to 20 million ILLEGAL ALIENS, the American people will need to rise up and stop him!

WE DO NOT NEED ANYMORE ILLEGAL ALIENS WORKING IN THIS COUNTRY WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY AMERICAN CITIZENS OUT OF WORK!

Suzy   November 23rd, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Excellent!!!!

Chase, SC   November 23rd, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Robert   November 23rd, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Be careful America and President-Elect Obama. Turncoats don't change their colors and Richardson is the biggest turncoat of the primary season. He will be awful as a Commerce Secretary – just take a good look at what his positions are. Worst decision President-Elect Obama has made to date! Richardson does not have the best interest of America at heart – only his best interest.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   November 23rd, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Clearly this is going to be an administration of clear thinkers with exceptional knowledge, not a group of "make goods" for friends without qualifications!!!

Norman Maneta are you listening?!

John "The Crooner" Ashcroft are you listening?!

Donald Rumsfeld are you listening?!

Abu Gonzales are you listening?!

Condi Rice are you watching?!

Marie banderas   November 23rd, 2008 12:21 pm ET

On commerce and free trade, I have some questions..
1st. If there are no jobs here for us, there is no money either, so WHO is going to buy those imported products then ?
2nd. Since so many of our jobs have been sent out, does this free trade ( or fair trade) agreements mean that the very jobs that should have been American jobs, are now making the products that we the american people want and need but no longer have money to BUY ?
I dont see the logic in this ? what good is free trade if there is no one left able to bUY these things ??
Good things for Richardson to ask too and and change..How many products areWE manufacturing and exporting ?? Seems to me more is imported than exported..and who controls how much is paid for imported products and how much is paid for exported products..I would love to see MORE "Made in America" products that even WE can buy…

Ann   November 23rd, 2008 12:14 pm ET

It appears that Gov. Richardson's switch during the primaries now seems to be more self serving than was apparent before, even though many of us thought it to be how he could advance his own career rather than a staunch support of then Senator Obama. It is unfortunate that he pledged allegiance to Obama figuring he would get Secretary of State and now I wonder how he feels about his relegation to a lower tier than he expected. But if the article is correct, then his taking it in hopes of stepping up the ladder later, seems once again his willingness to serve only depends on what is in it for himself and his own gains rather than the country or Obama's. How sad.

Michael -Ventura,CA   November 23rd, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Good choice! I would have liked to see John Kerry as Secretary of State though.

KJL   November 23rd, 2008 12:12 pm ET

He is building an impressive resume. We may be looking at a future president.

Independent Voter   November 23rd, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I guess Richardson can ditch the beard now. He's been so busy looking "More Hispanic than Thou" in order to weasel his way in.

Richardson is such a WASP name in a world in which it is much more lucrative to be Hispanic – Obama's World.

Obama better watch his back, though. This guy is FOR SALE to the highest bidder.

New Day   November 23rd, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I would've liked to see him get Secretary of State but, all things being equal, I can see why Clinton is a better political choice.
