Obama officially named his economic team Monday (from left: Geithner, Romer and Summers).

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) – President-elect Barack Obama named key members of his administration's economic team Monday, including New York Federal Reserve President Timothy Geithner as his Treasury Secretary nominee and former Harvard President Lawrence Summers as the director of the National Economic Council.

Obama's announcement was scheduled just hours after the federal government announced a massive rescue package for Citigroup – which President Bush said he'd spoken with Obama about before it was announced.

Mission No. 1 over the next few weeks for Obama's economic team will be hammering out the details of what the president-elect described this weekend as a two-year economic recovery plan intended to create 2.5 million jobs.

Thank you God for giving us Obama!!!! Intelligence will rain in Washington again!!! I soooo hope its not to late and Bush does NOT give anymore money away to his rich friends before he leaves!!!

Jon   November 24th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Obama will fail miserably. I miss Geroge Bush already.

Linda L - Sedona AZ   November 24th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

I am very happy with the intelligent people he has chosen. Perhaps those of you who don't see "change" (even though he hasn't taken office yet) is that he is picking people that are more than competent to do their jobs... not just cronyism. Another change is that he is asking for our ideas and visions. Just go to Change.gov and become part of the solutions. It's easy to be cynical, a little harder to actually contribute.
And to those who have (mis)understood his economic plans based soley on what Fox and McCain/Palin said about it, you will see that by actually cutting costs on unnecessary spending (unlike the last 8 years) the money will be there to pay for the programs he proposes. And if you are still determined to find fault, at least wait until he takes office. But better yet, join in the dialogue and let's work together to solve the problems that we all face.

Boise, ID   November 24th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Lord, please bless the intellectually less fortunate souls that believe
in trickle down economics. Grant them enough intelligence to see
through the fear tactics of those that seek to use them for their own
gain. Please allow them to see that you cannot blame Clinton for the
eight years after his presidency (Future) while blaming the Democratic
Congress for our current situation (Present) and Obama for the two
months prior to his Presidency (Past). Please allow them to see that
organized religion is evil and has no role to play in government. Allow
them to see how many lives have been lost due to wars in the name of
religion. Please show them that people with different colors on their
skin are every bit as good if not better than themselves. Grant them
the humility to realize that they have no right to project their own
flawed morals upon others that seek to share their lives together in
peace and tolerance. Show them that you cannot drill for more oil and
protect our planet at the same time. Lord, please raise the price of
gas continuously until we finally find something else. Please teach them how to spell so they don't look so dumb when they try to respond to this.

You're doing a GREAT job Mr. New President!

Don't listen to the empty wagons; they're doing what they do best: making a lot of noise!

"No Hillary = No Obama,"

Are you serious or a Limbaugh follower? In case you have not noticed:

Hillary = Obama
(Secretary of State)

Hillary will be part of an intelligent team, including the rest of the Cabinet. It gives many Americans great hope for our country again.

Beverly, NYC   November 24th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Oh My a press conference with a purpose. Much better than what Bush did this morning. Hold a big meeting to say he met with Paulson and to tell Mr. paulson he was doing a good job.
I had Deja vu of the Brownie moment after Katrina, so Paulson better looK out for that bus.

Sue   November 24th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

The country ignored experience when it came to electing a president. Why should we now care about experience in any part of governance?

Chelsea   November 24th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I KNEW there was a reason that my friends...family...neighbors.. neighbor's kids..co-workers... bosses....professors...and I (and anyone else that I spoke with during the campaign..) voted for you... I agree with all who said it before: let's just move Bush out now. I will personally wrap his little knick-knacks in bubble wrap if he promises to leave tomorrow...and move the new COMPETENT president and his beautiful family into the WH...

G.R.I.T.S. - Girl Raised in the South   November 24th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

KG: Just as so many others who choose only to hear what they want, you are failing to recall the other part of the plan – to give breaks to those companies that create jobs and to penalize those that take jobs overseas. So, if employers want to go overseas, they can, it will just cost them. If they want to stay here and create jobs, they get a credit. That's the other half of the plan you, and others like you, keep complaining about. You can't just take one side and beat it to death, it makes you look ignorant and like you've been feasting on sour grapes.

To Peter: Sarah? Palin? Brings dialogue to the table? Honey, she can't even spell d-i-a-l-o-g-u-e. She brings nothing to the table except her own ego.

Give it some time..the GOP had 8 years to bring us down, it might take 8 more years to right evrything. Remember, life is like a circle....

Laverne   November 24th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

To Daniel: At last, someone who knows what they are talking about. You are exactly right. Change does not necessarily mean all new faces. Change also means change in platform, policy, diplomacy, vision and agenda. It is just like working for 2 different bosses withing the same company. They expect totally different things from you and at the end of the day, you carry out their agenda based on the vision that is set forth. It is as simple as that! CHANGE WE NEED AND CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN!

Laverne   November 24th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

I am glad Obama chose Geithner for the Secretary of Treasury job. Summers use to be his mentor and with Summers committing to be the top advisor, what more can you ask for. Obama is a smart man and a clever politician. He will get the job done one way or the other. I get the feeling failure is not an option for Obama!

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 24th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

For all of you who are saying Bush should resign now, that just makes Cheney President. If both Bush and Cheney resign, the Speaker of the House (Pelosi) becomes president. If she resigns too, then it's the President Protem of the Senate, followed by the President's cabinet starting with Secretary of State. There is no constitutional mechanism for Obama to be sworn in early.

Jeff   November 24th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Some are complaining, but one thing they won't point out is that the DOW has jumped up 450 points today, and 250 points alone since the noontime press conference.

The market likes these picks, even as Republicans blame Obama for all the current problems.

Corey   November 24th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   November 24th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

... for all those commenting on Obama's economic skills? You would rather have McCain who bragged about how little he knew about the economy???

Guess what! Obama is an intelligent man who knows who to ask to find answer to the questions. No one knows it all but smart people know how to form teams of people, working together, who can figure out the answers.

All those gloom and doom people – its been less than a month – Obama is not even sworn in yet and you are moaning about things not changing! A little patience? If you aren't part of the solution, then you are part of the problem! Stop whining!

John Morris   November 24th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

My predictions for the newly elected Obama. I predict within 2 years he will be changing the name of the White House. He will say it is racially named and needs to be changed. this is my prediction for Obama, lets all wait and see if it happens.

idm   November 24th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

I'm not that familiar with these people, and I'm certainly not on top of the economics of this country. That being said, I have to give props to PE Obama for even TRYING to get something accomplished, unlike a certain sitting president who seems to have 'checked out' already. To all the doubters, naysayers and angry Republicans I say give the man a chance. We've done it 8 years your way, and it obviously hasn't been what you would call a rousing success. Let's see what someone else can do. It can't be any worse than W's accomplishments.

Change it is   November 24th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Change is determined by how Obama acts on his ideas, so it doesn't matter who will support or carry out those ideas. These members can have any affiliation from the past, because it's about how things will take shape now, not 16 years ago.

Michael M. Noonan   November 24th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Dear American,

You claim "here we go again" because the face of an African American is not shown. I admire Obama, although I didn't vote for him. I wish him all the best.

As for your protracted historical whine, may it be silenced by the intelligent words of a seemingly good man.

KG   November 24th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

2.5 million jobs? Good luck with that especially with the taxes you and the rest of the Dems are threatening to levy against business and the major investors of this country. You can't grow jobs by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor (unless you consider being on welfare a job). Businesses and the wealthy will not absorb these costs. They will offset them by raising prices, cutting jobs, moving jobs overseas, cutting or stagnating salaries, etc.

Anna, Missouri   November 24th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

nom deplume--May I suggest to you that you go to the Wall Street Journal website and read the article-UBS Clients Seek U.S. Amnesty-before you send any money off shore to hide it from paying taxes. Obama has promised to put an end to this practice, and it seems that George Bush's administration has already taken the lead. :) .

rm   November 24th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

@Jim...TX:

You wrote that Obama is economically illiterate. I suppose you think that McCain would do much better, right? Please google the video of McCain being asked about the economy, you can hear the birds chirping while the interviewer was waiting for an answer. You know Obama is the man, come on, it's OK.

Pepe   November 24th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Jim....TX

No, it won't. Obama's socialist economic leanings will have the same effect in the US that they have had in other countries. Growth will slow or stop, and economic contraction will cost more than the handouts can possibly alleviate. Everyone who has ever taken economics 101 in school can predict the results of the Keynsian policies Obama will insitute.
BTW, i agree that Bush didn't understand economics either. the $700 billion bailout is something a wiser president wouldn't have supoorted or pushed. But switching from Bush to Obama is like the Weimar Republic being replaced by the Third reich (economically, Obama's no killer) But don't believe me, just watch the results and you'll see what I mean in about 3 years.

AFAM   November 24th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Daniel   November 24th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Another example of Obama surrounding himself with knowledgeable people.

"Change" does not mean hiring exclusively new faces. If he did that, conservatives would be screaming for more "experience" in the Cabinet. And remember, he hasn't even taken office yet! How about giving it a year or two before determining whether or not his change platform is successful.

And if a movement away from Bush's policies isn't "change", then I don't know what is.

For Jim in TX worried about all of the spending... well, no longer dropping $120 billion/year into Iraq might free up some cash, won't it?

Iroko Nija   November 24th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

With Timothy Geithner as his Treasury Secretary nominee and former Harvard President Lawrence Summers as the director of the National Economic Council and now Hillary Clinton as the secretary of stae nominee, and finally, Joe Biden sitting strong and watching over the foreign affairs ladder, who still wants to hear or talk about inexperience? Truly, an OBAMA has come to justice.

The WH is currently occupied with the most illiterate President in history...his policies(Iraq for just one) has cost us WAY more than any benefits(Halliburton might argue that) and we the people HAVE ALREADY been taken for a ride an dragged through the mud! I pray for Obama and wish him the best! May health and wisdom be with him as long as possible, as the nation, the world needs him to lead in a high spirit.

I pray for Michelle Obama and the two daughters the most peaceful and enjoyable new life in the new home.

At least we know what were in for! I just hope most American's don't jump off this bandwagon if things are fixed in 100 days. It took 8 yrs to get in this fix and one man cannot get us out of it overnight. Be patient America and let him try.

Tim Geithner's proudest moments were his years at the IMF in the 90s when the United States bailed out Mexico's economy. Of course that policy was devaluating their currencies. Devaluing currencies and raising taxes, both extremely federal interventionist approaches.

Low paying road jobs for everyone.., spread the wealth.

Pat F   November 24th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Very smart move by Obama.

Lawrence Summers is the one Obama really wants on his economic team, but Obama doesn't want to subject Summers to the Senate politically correct lynchmob regarding Summers' comments about women in science. So Obama has appointed Summers to a job which does not require a Senate hearing.

Someone has given Obama very sound advice indeed.

America loses   November 24th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Unfortunately the dream team, thinks that strengthening unions is a dream come true with cardcheck loss of the secret ballot, and they think raising taxes on job creators is the right thing to do, and mandating healthcare on businesses struggling to make a profit is the right thing to do, and closing our borders to trade is the right thing to do, and raising capital gains taxes so that less money is invested in the US markets is the right thing to do, and increasing government spending by another trillion dollars is the right thing to do.

I don't call it the dream team, I call is the highway to a Depression team, or better yet the nightmare team. Goodbye American way of life, hello left wing liberal destruction of our economy.

lets see....how could we create 2.5 million jobs.

Well, we could hire more people at the IRS to make sure we have enough to take all of that tax money that will be raised.

We could hire more people at unemployment offices....heck, cut the line in half, hire half to process the claims of the other half...that would cut the unemployment rate by 50% immediately.

we could nationalize the automakers so that employees would now have to be members of the United States Auto Workers and would get a GS salary like other government emloyees.

All of these things would be "great" ways to get more jobs...

Considering that I believe the "Clinton era" was a very prosperous one for us, I also believe Obama's picking a lot of Clinton people to come onboard his Cabinet is our best shot in our financial recovery. I believe creating jobs to salvage our infrastructure is a necessity, and I believe we should repeal or drastically rewrite NAFTA and abandon similar agreements, like CAFTA. We gotta take care of home first!

Let the magic begin!

Califorinan_96   November 24th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Well done! President elected BARAK OBAMA,
That is what the US and the whole world needs right now.

Peter   November 24th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Sara brings dialogue to the table.
As governor, she worked with BOTH sides of the aisle.

The politicians and the MSM bring debate.
They are not intellectually equiped to manage maturity.

Dialogue is harder but requires more intelligence and maturity.

thank you Sara.

P.S.

Whoever is reading this at CNN and will not allow this comment to be viewed (like the last one I submitted) is practicing censorship. I thought that liberals and progressives defended free speech not obstructed it. Are you afraid of a point of view that is different than your own? Is that the definition of "bias"?

Pamela from Oceanside, Ca   November 24th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

I'm sorry Obama. My comment was meant for the Sarah Palin piece.

Califorinan_96   November 24th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Well done President elected BARAK OBAMA,

that what the US needs right now.

Rorschach   November 24th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Try to imagine how this scenario would be unfolding if Sarah Palin were the president-elect....

mitch   November 24th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

with all the clintons and former republicans i aint seein much 'hope' for 'change'.

Rich   November 24th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

I did not vote for him but I wish him the best of luck in his administration. I will stand by him and support him in his presidency. This is what makes America great.

Pamela from Oceanside, Ca   November 24th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Why is she still in the news? Go away Sarah. I'm tired of hearing anything about you. Please go be a hockey mom from Alaska and be a much needed mother to your underage pregnant daughter. How does that work out for ya?

Laverne   November 24th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Good Job President elect Obama! I know you will make our country proud no matter what the nutty right wing say and a few nutty dems too!

nom deplume   November 24th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

That's nice. Now I am naming my economic team–bankers in the Cayman Islands. Obama can't tax what he can't reach.

Ah! The birth of Socialism.

Start spreadin' the weatlh...it's handout time!

xargaw   November 24th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

The country is in the biggest mess of our lives. We have a chance to dig ourselves out over a long period or time. This is a good start; at last a smart President that has chosen smart people instead of political hacks.

No Hillary = No Obama   November 24th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

As Obama builds his "brain trust" because he has to have "the best people", let's see if this makes any difference at all. It looks to me as if he has to shore himself up which is why he went with Clinton vets. When all is said and done, it will be the Clinton's running the country.

Mike Dallas   November 24th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Now, if the shrub will just resign on 12.15,08 there may still be time to avoid financial armagedden!

David in Dallas   November 24th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

This should be a fundamental answer to the critics who say that some of Obama's picks don't represent enough of the change he promised in the election.

The area where we most need change–the economy–is where Obama is tossing out the Washington insiders and tapping the nation's economic intelligencia.

I have no illusions–things aren't going to turn around in the next several months. I'm also sure that Obama will identify some areas that aren't going as well as planned and correct them, because unlike Bush, he's married to results instead of ideology. His picks show that.

In the end, I am confident that Obama can rebuild in 4 years what Bush destroyed in 8.

TrueIndependent   November 24th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

I am appalled at how desperately the Republicans seem to want the President Elect to fail, even before he takes office. They are disappointed that his selections thus far have not being as 'liberal' as they expected. That is not patriotic. Get a life!

PRESIDENT OBAMA, SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A PLAN. WONDERFUL. BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T HAD A president since 2000. dumby bush and crazy cheney have done nothing but destroy this country and just like PRESIDENT CLINTON

Adrian from Chicago, IL   November 24th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

I never heard of any of them, but I am sure if he chose them they are just as shady as he is. We are up the creek.

Texas Vet   November 24th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

It's too bad that Amercia has to wait until the end fo January to swear in President Elect Obama.

The best thing Bush could for the Country is to let Obama's Finanial start mking some of the decisions before the remainder of the so called TARP funds are spent wisely.

Giving money to the Banks so executives can continue to receive bonuses is not working.

Baze   November 24th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Good luck

No bailout for the automakers!

Spencer/NY to VA   November 24th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Judgement to lead on day one.

-President-elect Obama

Milhouse van Houten   November 24th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Time to roll up the sleeves and be prepared to hit the ground running
come January, because there is going to be a hell of alot of work to be done before this mess is cleaned up.

deb in Colo   November 24th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Where the heck is BUSH? He doesn't act like a LAME DUCK – he's acting like a DEAD DUCK. The economy is imploding while "Zero" fiddles....

katiec   November 24th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Thank God we will have some people in key positions who are
qualified and can get our country on the road to economy.
What is frightening is Bush, Paulson and crew still have the
power to make decisions on the future of our country.

sam   November 24th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

how do you spell relief.........Obama

Yes!   November 24th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I think we hit the jackpot as far as brainpower America.

Bruce   November 24th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

he is inheriting a mess from an administration that has non clue, and no plan and is basicly running out the clock. Too bad therere is still time for them to furthere damage.
Obama is a bit late addressing this, but think that he now realizes that Bush and his buddies are just running out the string.
Will be interesting to see how the market reacts.

Purple Nurple   November 24th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

His cabinet is starting to look really good. As far as how well they do is yet to been seen. I have confidenince that this team is going to get our country starting on the right path. It's all about jobs baby!!!

Also, reguardless of who you voted for, I want to say HAPPY THANKSGIVING everybody!! May your turkey/ham day be full of happiness and laughter!!!!!!!!
