McCain confirmed Tuesday he’s planning to run for a fifth Senate term in 2010.

(CNN) – Former GOP presidential candidate John McCain denied Tuesday that political considerations — a desire to appeal to Clinton supporters — played a role in his selection of running mate Sarah Palin, calling her “an energizing factor” and telling reporters the Alaska governor has a “very bright future in a leadership position in the Republican Party.”

"She did a great job of energizing our base. I'm very proud of her,” he said at a press conference in Phoenix, his first since losing to Barack Obama three weeks ago. “It's one of the great pleasures I've had to get to know her and her family, and I think she has a very bright future in a leadership position in the Republican Party.

"….I knew that she would be an energizing factor, because she energized me," he added. "Our base, and most Americans, viewed Governor Palin as a breath of fresh air."

Taking a look back at the presidential contest, he said his campaign was dealt a fatal blow when public focus shifted from foreign policy to the faltering economy. “The American people — and I respect that decision, I don’t in any way criticize it – [decided] that the economy was of vital importance. And it is,” he said.

He also told reporters: “We worked hard, and we inspired a lot of people, Sarah Palin and I. I think we look back with pride."

The Arizona senator said that he’s planning to run for re-election in two years, and that an official announcement would come “at an appropriate time.” He praised the president-elect for his cabinet picks so far, especially his reported selection of Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano – long mentioned as a likely 2010 Senate rival — as Secretary of Homeland Security.

Multiple sources have told CNN that Napolitano is Obama’s top choice for that post.

"I have already talked with her, and look forward to moving her nomination as quickly as possible through the United States Senate," said McCain. He said he is also planning trips in the near future to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Even with his stiffest competition is reportedly taking a pass, McCain’s home state has been trending blue — he beat Barack Obama by just 9 points — and the four-term senator told reporters Tuesday he’s expecting a “tough race.”

McCain – keep bringing Palin up. It will definitely keep the GOP down for a loooong time.

Dear Friends,

It is typical of the elite, they want to kill off anything that is a threat, they still talk about Reagan like he was bad.

Guess what, Jimmy Carter was a bad president, and if Mr Obama goes down the same path, he also will be a bad one.

At this point Mrs Palin, is the only one that has given back to the people, and did was right an honorable.

kurt   November 25th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Is the Grand Old Party becoming (or has become) senile?? Surely their concept of a substantive force/player in the future GOP is more sophisticated than what we saw of Governor Palin. No doubt that she is a great 'soccer-mom' but certainly has not paid a lot of attention to the complex world outside of Alaska. If the conservative base wants a junior high school cheerleader as their representative then Governor Palin was indeed the right choice. Following the debate with Senator Biden and the few press interviews she gave, Senator McCain lost my vote then. The many post-election interviews/appearances that she has now given re-enforced my decision.

my hats off to john mcain for being a stand up guy and not blaming palin for his lose of the election. i look forward to seeing what palin has to offer in the future of politics. and all you aters out there palin has done more than anyone of you losers so just go crawl back in your holes.

Well John old boy, you didn't learn much from that whippin you got did you? Didn't the voters make it clear they don't like Palin? Democrats and Republicans alike. Didn't you watch the coverage of the Gov's. convention and see all those unhappy faces on the "boys" who want to be the new g.o.p. leaders?

Sarah Palin – the gift that keeps on giving. Next she's off to Georgia to help sink SucksToBe Chambliss.

If Obama does only half as well as expected, running against Palin in 2012 would be considered potential child abuse.

If she's the best they've got, they're cooked.

Joyce   November 25th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

Sarah Palin has had her 15-minutes of fame in which she proved she is not presidential material. So, now, let's ignore her and maybe she will settle down on her porch overlooking Russia. Let's prove we are serious about the US's future and forget all about SarahNo more discussing, dissing, gossiping about her anymore, right?!

Obama: You mean Napolitano

Palin is dillusional. If she thinks "the good old boys" are going to move over and allow her to slide in, void of any national vetting i.e., 20 months of campaigning, the Republicans deserve what they get from her. Moreover, her base is minimal at best: cultural and social pandering is a dying breed.

The reason you left wing idiots are trashing Sarah Palin is for two reasons, one she is very smart and intelligent, don't know if you know what that means. Number you are scared of her. Oh and a third reason, she is a beautiful woman. It is no wonder the left has their panties in a wad, think of what they have to look at, Reno, Albright, Waters, McKinney, Hillary, Pelosi, and the monkey that will go to the White house. I have a deep and abiding sorrow for the left, not!!! LOL

I will respect John McCain when he admits he "screwed up" by "choosing" her just like he admitted to Dave Letterman he "screwed up" by standing him up. Come on John, give the Republicans a "get out of jail free" card.

What a liar. His Sarah Palin choice was so obviously based on a cheap demographic gimmick. If he really considered country first he would have made a much more thought out and responsible choice. And if he honestly thought she deserved to be at that level of government than that proves that Mcain's judgement is ridiculous.. Thanks but no thanks, we've had a ridiculous president for long enough.

Craig   November 25th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

I'm sorry, but what??? Sarah Palin a breath of fresh air? I don't think so. She certainly is not qualified to hold any political position. She's pretty good at dancing around a question and never answering it ,and that's about it. And I certainly don't trust someone who takes money to be used to build a bridge and then uses it to build a library. Whether she was republican or democrat, I don't want her holding any position in the government!

Jim in San Jose   November 25th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Sarah is little more than a cheerleader for a party that has lost it's way. It's base is the only section of the electorate that she attracts and thus the republicans will be playing second fiddle for many years to come. That is until a real leader comes along (and is recognized as such, a higher hurdle than finding the person). That person will have to realize that the three things the republican party needs most are acceptance, acceptance and acceptance. Their best shot will come in 2016 at the earliest.

Chris in Va.   November 25th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

This 'breath of fresh air' John inhaled was really just a "gust of lust."
If Sarah Palin had been a man, she'd have been Dan Quayle redux. Frankly, it won't bother me a bit to see her provide the Republican Party with its leadership for the balance of my lifetime. I'll just call her my "easy button."

I LOVE OBAMA   November 25th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

I belive Palin woudl've been out of the spotlight already if media outlets such as CNN would STOP POSTING about her already..who cares? We all know a big reason McCain lost was due to the fact that he picked her as his VP. I'm sure the race would've been much closer had he chosen Romney or someone..anyone but her. Why is everyone acting as if this woman would actually have a chance if she ran in 2012???? Even most Repubs can't stand her.

John McCain needs to stop it! The economy did not derail his candidacy. His response to the economy derailed his candidacy. That and running a campaign that was rabid, evil, and devisive. I can't imagine how Sarah Palin has a future in politics. She is DUMB. Worst than that is she doesn't even know she is DUMB.

Republican that voted for Obama/Biden TEXAS   November 25th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

McCain must still be off his medication. Palin is horrible and it's McCain's fault that she is here and won't go away.

Hopefully,Trig will get shoes for Christmas. She is a horrible mother, too.

johnrj08   November 25th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

John McCain appears to be at odds with several of the respected thinkers in the Republican Party, including Peggy Noonan, Kathleen Parker, David Brookes, Christopher Buckley, Colin Powell, Susan Eisenhower, George Will and Ken Dubenstein. My guess is that many more moderate intellectuals who still remain in the GOP feel exactly the same way. McCain puts his own party at risk by continuing to endorse Palin, who only appeals to the shrinking evangelical right-wing of his party's base. And that's not enough voters to win any national election.

Luigi ina California   November 25th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

barbara campbell   November 25th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

The Republican base – the same 28% of the population that still approves of Bush/Cheney – may see Palin as a breath of fresh air but the rest of us see the same old divisiveness, self-interest, and hateful ideology that permeates the right wing. Instead of the usual angry rich old white guys, we have an angry rich young white woman spewing the same lies and propaganda.

Only head-in-the-sand Republicans can't see how their agenda has wrecked America; how the American people stood up to the rich and powerful and took back our Democracy.

Palin's rise in the Republican party simply proves that the neocons are not moving forward with the rest of us.

Minnesotan   November 25th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

A 'bright future' for Palin? Does that mean she's going to get an education so that she doesn't come off as an uneducated, boorish rube?

Michael Arnaud   November 25th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

To Mr. Raghu Bala: So what you're saying is that only the people who got all A's in school have the right to vote? If you have "subpar intelligence" you need to let some who's "smarter" than you pick your national leader? Isn't that what Saddam Hussein and Adolph Hitler did in thier countries?

By the way Mr. Bala, there's school smarts and real world smarts. Just because you got A's in school and scored high on the SAT's dosen't qualify a person to be Pesident of the United States. I'll take someone with real world smarts anyday.

Sarah Palin may have not been a Rhodes Scholar(like Bill Clinton, who couldn't keep his fly zipped by the way) but she was eligible by the Constitution to run for national office. Till "smart" people like you Mr. Bala get that document changed, you'll just have to put up with us "dumb" people running for elected office. Sucks to be you I guess.

Roger   November 25th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

The negative and slanderous comments in this Post are shameful. America deserves much more. In defense of Palin, she did not have the lengthy primaries to sharpen her knowledge of national and international issues. Yes, she made mistakes but it should not be forgotten that she was governor of a State, much larger than Delaware, and she had the experience of being in excutive positions that none of the candidates had. Knowledge of the issues can be achieved quickly and you will hear more from her in the future. Let us not discourage anyone from seeking office. You have a vote on their qualifications in the end. Harry Truman certainly did not have the credentials when he became President but he learned quickly and is now recognized as one of the truly great Presidents of our time. Hopefully, the negative posters will become more constructive.

My cooment and the GOP are awaiting moderation. I don't hold out much hope on the former.

These are the facts. The country is not on the far right. As much as Palin and the right wing nuts wish it were it is not. And it is not on far left either, though for some policies I wish it were. Power in this country should be and mostly is given to the candidate from either party who can excite their base and entice the middle. It is that simple. That is how Reagan won, How Clinton won and how Obama won (it is also how Al Gore won but that is for another article). Barry Goldwater never got to be President, George McGovern never got to be President. Why? Because they were too far to the extreme. Could Palin someday win? Not with the attitude she has now.
But this is America and if the last election showed us anything…things change

I used to be a Registered Republican – now I am a reformed Republican. Palin reinforces the correctness of my decision. To paraphrase an old saw – I didn't leave the GOP, the GOP left me! They have pandered to the religious right wing evangelicals and the fringe elements in the party and left the moderates in the GOP out! They have sold us out to Dobson and his ilk.

Up here in the 'great white north' (Canada) we are blessed with so many national political parties that it is difficult for one to achieve a majority in our elections. Our US neigbours have the luxury of only two serious options. Your recent election showed us clearly how one party can 'throw in the towel' by nominating a Presidential candidate who 'just does not get it' – and a Vice-Presidential candidate who was so unqualified that we folks up north were petrified at the notion that she might end up in a position of real authority.
We thank the USA electors for their wisdom!

We do thank you for ending the Bush-Nixon neocon era, however. New leadership is rising. It may be Palin, It may be someone like Huckabee….or it may be someone entirely new. He would not have been allowed to run if he was not eligible.

He is an American citizen born in Hawaii who is over 35 years old.
Last time I looked, Hawaii was part of the US.

Obama has won the election – he is currently the president elect.

After January, you will be calling him President Obama.

Get used to it.

Marc from Oregon   November 25th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

SARAH THE SELF-SERVIING SOCIOPATH…..the woman is stupid, a boldfaced liar, an environmental disaster, and anathema to animals. Take her out to the frozen tundra and leave her there…..

Lynne   November 25th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

I never got the whole Palin attraction. She really is lacking in the knowledge to be president or even hold a national office and she has a hard time expressing herself. I guess I'd be labeled one of the educated academia bunch because I like critical thinking skills, intelligence, and communication abilities in a president more than good looks and folksiness.

travis   November 25th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Wow, all I can say is wow. Palin STILL scares the crap out of democrats. WOW. For you neoliths that are having a hate bashing party, and all of you nay sayers…….. why are y'all still giving this any thought? Because Palin scares the crap out of you, that is why. Sure, she may have not come off in the first two weeks as articulate, but, hell, Bideon articulates idoitacy and Obama cant articulate at all with out a speach put in front of him somehow. Palin, whom has the skills necessary to hunt and dress out game, has the skill set to fish and clean the catch, raise children, and run a state may not come off to some of you as "intelligent", but I will tell you this- there are only 5 states in the Union that have a budget surpluss and hers is one of them, and second– if the economy really really really really goes bad, she will have the ability to fend for her family— will you?

Steve   November 25th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

There will be no such thing as a Republican Party by the time the next election rolls around. How long did take the Republicans to shake the responsibility for the Depression. They will never shake responsibility for the Depression and this economical mess.
A new political party will be formed an the republican party will disappear.

Roger from CA   November 25th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

John…. John…. John…… You don' t have to pretend anymore….. Just admit that picking Palin was a disasterous mis-calculation, and let it go.

If you are truly the patriotic American you always claim to be, it is incumbent on you to THWART any future ambitions of Palin, to save the country and the world from catastrophe.

Ron   November 25th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

I still don't get it… What is the fascination with that woman? What has she got to offer our nation? Yes, I can imagine her appearing on talk shows, babbling away about moose recipes, how wonderful it was to be on stage with old McCain, smiling at the camera, but presidential material? NO!

BeefyDaddy   November 25th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

Oh, excuse me, I think I just threw up in my mouth…

Rob Johnson   November 25th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

He is right about one thing–Sarah Palin does have a bright future in Republican politics.

However, the Republican Party in general doesn't have a very bright future, so that sort of cancels out. Sorry, Sarah.

Doug - Dallas, TX   November 25th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Based on those comments, everyone should rejoice that kind of flawed thinking didn't make it into the White House.

Sue   November 25th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Does anybody really expect mcCain to come clean about his poor choice of Palin as his running mate which cost him the election ? Come on…Of course he will stick to his guns and keep saying how great Palin is even though he would love to throttle her !

Don   November 25th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

John, John, John……..Still no fool like an old fool. Most Americans came to despise Sarah Palin, and with her out front in your campaign, came to despise you also. She has provided a role model for Alaska in which most people see the entire population as a bunch of uneducated, red necks. As soon as the news media start to ignore her (like they are you now) she will fade away like a bad dream (as you will also).

Shame on you for trying to ram her down America throat. In her case, stupidity I can forgive, but you knew better.

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   November 25th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Palin is fluff.

She is loved by mid-Westerners and people in the South, especially uneducated people who seldom leave their communities to see how the rest of the world lives.

How unfortunate.

John   November 25th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Yes, She has bright future in GOP but GOP sure doesn't have a bright future with leaders like that.

Spencer   November 25th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Gee whiz. If Sarah Palin has a future at all in national politics, and it's with the GOP, then all of the rest of us can look forward to a Democratic government for the next 50 years. The woman is such an insipid waste of time.

WHO ME?   November 25th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

REALLY, AREN'T WE DONE WITH YET?

MESA MICK   November 25th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

McCain's still in denial!
Hey Johnny boy, it was Palin coupled with your "geezerness" that lost it for you – period. Deal with it.
And If you think Palin is good for the GOP you ARE delusional. That hick-talkin' Wasilla trailer park trash is "certainly probably" what the GOP doesn't need more of…

Beverly, NYC   November 25th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

He also told reporters: “We worked hard, and we inspired a lot of people, Sarah Palin and I. I think we look back with pride."

Really, look back with pride!!! Senator McCain surely you jest, look back with pride at what, the dirty campaign you ran, or the fact that your campaign was so lackluster you had to import a dunce like Palin just to energize your base for 2 weeks, and you only got that because for week one no one knew who she was, and week 2 she was the new it girl. Are you really looking back with pride on the stunt you pulled of "suspending" your campaign and rushing back from NY to DC in the record time of 25hrs. All while not reading Paulson's 3 1/2 page bailout proposal so you could maybe ask and intelligent question or come up with half an idea on the "sound fundamentals" of the economy during the photo op with the current "President". Bet you had time to talk to Bono and spped date your running mate through chats with world leaders.

Are you nostalgic for the underlying hate you sufaced, over the audacity of a person of color to run for President in losers like Limbaugh, Hannity and their minnions? So much so that he and his family needed a security detail before any other candidate in history. I could go on but in your heart of heart Senator I think you know you have no honor. As a democrat I do hope that Palin, Guiliani, & Romney are the future faces of the GOP, what Bush hasn't done to your party these 3 will surely finish.

Jack   November 25th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

I think he meant colorful future as she is sure to keep us amused with her idiocy.

matzmaw   November 25th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

KLEE   November 25th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

ughh!

Bill in Illinois   November 25th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

I will be forever convinced that the reason that Silly Sarah was chosen was to counter the fact that Sen. McCain was running against a black man and needed a gimmick.

In the end it turns out that it was a really poor decision and one that will forever haunt the GOP. Sarah demonstrated a severe lack of knowledge of anything beyond Moose stew and snowmobiles. It has to cause a considerable amount of heartburn to the leaders of the party that she is being touted as the new wave of republicans. God help us all!!

I do object to some of the really despicable comments that are being made however. She does not deserve that nor does it serve any purpose other than allowing socically challenged individuals spew a message of hate and evil. Make an effort to be civil folks.

Alain   November 25th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Dear Republican Party:

Please tell me there are far better qualified people in our great party that have what it takes to lead this country!

Otherwise, many folks like myself are giving thought (shudder!) to abandoning this ship until it gets a rudder beneath it.

Steph   November 25th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

al,
Adjust your medication.

Raghu Bala   November 25th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

I, for one, am not at all impressed by Sarah Palin's knowledge of various matters – whether it be geography, foreign policy, economic issues, and more.

Her rah-rah soccer mom cheerleading style lacks substance and he academic pedigree is close to pathetic. The US is where it is now because we chose George Bush – another person with subpar intellectual credentials (albeit he went to Yale due to family connections). When you vote intelligent, bright leaders (Clinton was a Rhodes scholar and many in his cabinet were also super bright people), you end up with a solid economy and strength as a nation.

Ultimately, like the saying goes A's pick A's, C's pick C's….referring to the fact that smart people are usually surrounded by other smart people. There are people far far more qualified in any dimension – experience, intelligence, knowledge, etc than Sarah Palin. She is underqualified and unqualified for high office. So, McCain has it completely wrong. By the way, because he picked a C, he is a C.

Terry B.   November 25th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

McSame still can't tell a joke….

AP from Illinois   November 25th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

Here's an idea….taking a page from the Rush Limbaugh playbook. Operation CHAOS II. For anyone who voted for Obama…vote for Sarah Palin in the 2012 primaries. That ought to make the GOP very very nervous.

I really feel sorry for the people who drank the Palin Kool-Aid. Get a grip. We don't hate her. We just don't think that she is qualified to be the leader of the free world and THAT scares us. Sarah Palin could single handedly erase any chance the GOP has to regain power for the next decade! It is kind of like the Dems having such candidates as George McGovern or Walter Mondale.

I encourage anyone who likes her to watch You Tube videos of her answering questions. She rarely answers a question with specifics. She is very good at the non-answer. If that is what you want for a leader, then I can't talk you out of supporting her.

If can only hope that Sarah Palin does not cost the dems votes in 4 years by NOT being on the ballot!

Jim   November 25th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

While she did energize your base John. The fact is she energized far more Democrats and independents. Though I am a democrat when this race started, Sen. McCain definitely had a chance to win my vote due to his history and principles and Obama's overall lack of experience. The fact is that after her 1st interview, it was a no brainer. Gov. Palin belongs no where near the White house and never will. She will never be President or anything close. This campaign served as a continuous blooper real for her. Try as they might the republicans will never be able to overcome her own words, and would be wise to move on. If she's the best you have to offer America you will never again gain the trust of this country. We expect and deserve better.

Ron   November 25th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

The sad part was that McCain meant what he said… that Palin supporters acctually believe that they are following someone who represents them… Wait a minute, she DOES represent them — the undeducated, inarticulate, illiterate, gun-toting shallow rabble!
I am NOT suprised that she has a following, after all, she WAS Miss Congeniality in a beauty pageant!

Bob A. Looie   November 25th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

always nice to have the base energized…………..no really

Jim COLORADO   November 25th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Just a way to cover up his poor judgment with his pick of Palin. His lousy judgment still shows up with his or Palins opening of their mouths. Just do us all a favor and go away.

Ted, Washington DC   November 25th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Bush with his high deficits dug the hole. for the Grits. The only thing left for McCain which would have some traction was immigration but McCain jumped in the hole dug by Bush. He aligned with Bush and the liberals including the Democrates even on that isue and left nothing for himself to fight. with. He had no chance. He belonged neither with the right nor the left of the political spectrum. Even if the economy had not turned down, he would have lost albeit not with the high margin that he lost to Obama. There was very little that tied him up with the base. And while he may have ilked to refer to himself as the maverick, his eagerness to get involved with the rescue package made him erratic. Palin had agreater affinity with the base but people do not vote for vice presidents. It is unfrtunate because John McCain deserves better than that

Carramia   November 25th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

To all the liberal Democratic hate mongers, what goes around comes around. The sub prime mess, the root cause of the current financial crisis, is the brainchild of the Democrats
______________________________________________________

Here it is again folks the great republican lie "all this is the democrats fault"

Let me point out a few things to you idiot republicans
1) since 1968 the REPUBLICANS have controlled the White House about 3/4 of the time
2) since 1968 the Republicans have controlled the congress about 60% of the time

so for this to be "the democrats fault" it must be true that democrats are better leaders and more effective once they get control than republicans.. so you crying members of the radical religious right which is it?
Is this the fault of the party which has controlled the government more over the last 40 years (Republicans) or are Democrats just that much more effective?

Either choice you make it seems to me Democrats are the ones we want in power now to fix the mess either the Republicans caused it or the democrats are better at governing…

Akinola - Houston   November 25th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

Mccain is still campaigning!

Allen in Hartwell, GA   November 25th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

The statement from McCain that Palin would make a good leader makes as much sense as saying that he lost the election because people focused on the economy instead of foreign policy. Doesn't the man understand that the citizens of the USA are tired of the politics of the RNC and GOP as it has become?

bluejay827   November 25th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

Chris, yes Senator McCain was born in the Canal Zone–while his father was stationed there on military orders. He is a US citizen. This question has been asked and answered before.

Saul- Independent   November 25th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Washington Observer,

Sure, Bush and all the republicans who have been in power for the last 8 years with their free market garbage have nothing to do with the mess we are in. Frank, Dodd and Obama were the bank managers giving out the loans to "unqualified borrowers" with misleading language that lure most to their doom.
if this is the best argument you can come up with, then you are really ignorant about the hierachy of power in this country and how banks work.

IDIOT!!

Debbie   November 25th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Obviously "most" Americans did not find her "refreshing." Most found her ridiculous and frightening all at the same time – which is one big reason McCain lost the election. The people Sarah Palin "energize" are in the minority in this country, thank God.

Yes, the country is going to hell–and you folks keep voting for the same idiots that got us there. The "big shots" in DC weren't about to let any outsider get in on the action–that might upset their gravy bowls! Most of the comments say that Governor Palin wasn't and isn't qualified–so would someone please tell me, what qualification(s) Senator Obama has. Two months as a senator doesn't count for much in my book. But, he won and I pray that he's very successful in turning things around.

Badger   November 25th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

She energized normal people to vote for Obama!

tas   November 25th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

There is such intolerance in these comments. And alot of ignorance too. Good thing you are all in the minority or our country would be in even worse shape.

Vasha, FL   November 25th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

It takes only one chance to make a first impression. The first impression of Sarah is that of dumb, ignorant, and spoon fed. All the images and these impressions she created would be the first to revisit her if she everdecided to come out in 2012. I know that for sure. It's a failure.

Bob Nelsen   November 25th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

She may be a star to you, but I bet you will not have her campaign for you in your senate race.

IJA   November 25th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

These two IDIOTS need to go away! McCain needs to stay away from politics b/c he's old! And the other racist b**ch needs to go home to her kid's before her other daughter becomes pregnant too.

jim   November 25th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

First rule when you are stuck in a deep hole: don't start digging another hole. Sarah Palin in a Bobcat trench digger. The GOP is going to be deeper than dinosaur fossils. Good luck to y'all.

Randy Henrick   November 25th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

McCain is a pathetic old man. His pick of Palin doomed what little chance he had to win the election. She was perhaps the least qualified Vice Presidential candidate in history as her interview with Katie Couric proved to anyone who watched it. She had no grasp of foreign policy and was an absolute hypocrite on her religious right agenda of intolerance domestically. He picked her for blue collar sex appeal and to pacify the Jerry Falwell types who have made the Republicans a fringe party of extremists. I hope the Republicans are foolish enough to nominate her in 2012. Claiming she was more qualified than President Obama was hilarious, perhaps more so than her trying to explain why evolution is wrong and abstinence (which neither she nor her daughter followed) is the only acceptable doctrine for schools and government policy.

Dixie AZ   November 25th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Is Sarah Palin the hope for the future of the GOP? Is she the best they have? Pitiful.

IJA   November 25th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

"The fundamentals of our economy are sound…" "Sarah Palin is a breath of fresh air". — See any similarities? Come one now Senator. Look what an uninformed president has gotten us? If Sarah Palin were elected, that would make W look like a genius

Laura   November 25th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Palin a breath of "fresh" air"? More like a foul stench. She's an affront to women of U.S.

M. Bryan   November 25th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Washington Observer hasn't been too observant. He and a lot of
oithers, including the media, had blinders on, about the meeting in
2004 that changed the regulation that limited the amount of debt
that big investment banks could take on. Without correct oversight,
this alone contributed more to the lending mess than any other. My
small bank always guaranteed that I had sufficient collateral to stand
good for any loan in the event of default. In a nutshell, GREED is the
single-most cause and taxpayers are being asked by ex-Wall Streeter
Paulson to bear the cost with no guarantee that investment banks will
mend their ways. The Fat Cats just will not get it unless they help pay
for their mistakes. Congress, please remember this!

Fleas   November 25th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

G.R.I.T.S - Girl Raised in the South   November 25th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

I understand that Sen. McCain, or any other politician, finds it hard to admit mistakes, but I would have so much more respect for him if he told the truth. The American people, overwhelming, rejected Palin. Yes, we rejected McCain and the GOP, but Palin was the nail in the coffin for many people who initially thought they would vote for McCain. If Sen. McCain would just admit that he made a mistake, based on political considerations, and that the base of the Republican Party is not in sync with the rest of America, wow, his stock would go way up with me, and with other Americans.

Take heed, Sarah Palin is a mother, a wife, a daughter, sister and most of all a Governor, and I would not say anything bad about her. However the thought of her being a heartbeat away from the presidency was a NIGHTMARE in itself, she was just not ready. Sarah a bit of advice, EDUCATION is THE KEY!

Chuck   November 25th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

What you are reading in these comments are one of the true differences in the two parties. The viciousness and arrogance of the left wing elite has no limits. Get over yourself. You won. Now you have to govern. It will be very interesting. Obviously the Obama supporters are not hearing his call for a united America. Sarah Palin has a future. If you people screw up it may be a bright one.

I'd much rather have her than Hussein Frobama.

Ellen M. Wolfe   November 25th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

So far you are my home page for news, but if you don`t let the Palin stories die a natural death I am going to ask my geek to change that and pick a different news source. If she is all they have to offer, the Democrats are SURE to win again in 2012, no questions asked. Not to mention, more gains in the House and Senate for the Democrats too in 2012!!!

Hey GOP leaders, please keep Sarah Palin as a presidential hopeful!!!!!!!!

I'm soooo glad we chose OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drumble   November 25th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

Arlene, you're right.

I'm what you would call a liberal-minded person, and I am happy that Obama is going to the White House, but I don't think we should be casting either McCain or Palin as pantomime villains, they are simply politicians with different ideals than me, and now that the race is over, I have no animosity towards McCain for running, just relief that he didn't win. Let's not forget that McCain's concession speech was very gracious and that he silenced his own supporters who were trying to be derisive. I think that the term Hater is banded about way too much, from both sides, to mark the other, and it's not productive.

Tucker B.   November 25th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

I understand that the extremes of each party are just that– extreme viewpoints. I'm sure moderates from the right and left could have an intelligent discussion if we could get rid of some of the extreme comments. don't think that's going to happen in this forum though!!!

To be quite honest what scares me to the point of sarcasm is that we've had eight years of just plain 'DUMBNESS' in the White House and it has nearly DESTROYED this Nation. I fought for this country in Vietnam and I love this nation way too much to see it turned over to ignorant buffoons once again.

Sarah Palin CLEARLY has little understaniding of the world in which we live. That is all I've ever seen or heard from her in ALL of her public appearances. If you could point me to some information that shows her in depth knowledge of the world in which we live I would gladly read it and consider her comments

Nancy   November 25th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Palin 2012!   November 25th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

A simple apology would have been fine. "Sorry for breaking my promise to run a civil campaign. Sorry for sowing the seeds of racism and hate like George Wallace before me. Sorry for putting an unintelligent, uninterested, fundamentalist, hockey mom THIS close to the nuclear codes. Sorry for selling out. Sorry for trying to scare the living crap out of you to get your vote. Sorry President Obama for putting you and your family in danger by questioning your patriotism, religion and character." I pray to the heavens Palin ends up the leader of the GOP. I've been waiting for so long to hammer that final nail in the GOP coffin. We're almost there folks!

Susie from Austin, Texas   November 25th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Way to go GOP! Please, please, please keep Sarah Palin up front and center. That'll be such a great boost for the Democratic Party.

Calm Down on the Hate Blogs!!!   November 25th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

To the Obama supporters:
I am an Obama supporter and volunteered for him in Indiana yet I remain appalled that so many of my fellow Obama supporters are being so nasty toward McCain & Palin. I like McCain as a Senator but didn’t think he was Presidential material. While I didn’t particularly like Sarah Palin’s approach and disagree with her policies, I think the media and many of my fellow Democrats were extremely unfair to her. Don’t get me wrong I would like nothing more than for Sarah to get back to Alaska and do her job.

To the McCain supporters:
Give Obama a chance he hasn’t even taken office yet. All this speculation about what he’s going to do is just speculation!!!! How about just waiting until he’s in office before blaming him for the mess he’s about to inherit. If Obama turns out to be a great president you’re going to look back at some of the hateful things you said and wonder what you were thinking. To clear a few things up; Obama IS a US citizen, he IS NOT a socialist, a terrorist or the anti-Christ and he WILL NOT take your gun rights away

Really!   November 25th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

Maybe she can sell McCain that bridge she's always referring to.

al   November 25th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

she does have bright future, one of the most popular governors in the country, she makes decisions, no governor ever has foreign policy experience, it was a dumb excuse that the media used on her, some of you people are ridiculous, let's be honest, joe biden?, let me say this, wrong on going into the war and wrong about the surge, on both he was wrong, mccain and obama at least got one out of the two, foreign policy credentials my butt, what else did he say, fdr was president in 1927??, huh? that sounds like a dumb comment to me, lighten up cause she will be kicking your butt in four years and i can't wait to hear the whining from you

Texas Trail Kitty   November 25th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

John McCain must be kidding. This woman became a flashpoint for ridicule and this continues to this day. Keep talking Senator McCain and remind us why you aren't president. But by all means, keep up the praise. I truly hopes she runs for and wins the nomination for president in four years. This should make President Obama a shoo-in.

Herny the Independent from NYC   November 25th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

The base, Joe the Plumber, and Suzy the waitress, are attempting to hold on to values that the elite of the republican party never believed in. The republican elite used abortion, homophobia and the trickle down theory to make money, give money (gifts and under the table bribes) and buy polictical favor. While campaigning republicans poloticians shout these concepts to enrage those that are not ready for social, financial and political change to the republican elites cause. Plain represents that cause which has never had true policy making, building and planning beyond winning an issue. Palin has not conherent policy positions and because I want Obama for another term I beg them to vote for her as the republican candidate. I beg them.

Some advice for the GOP – spend at least as much time trying to save the economy as you are currently spending trying to save your party.

uncle elsworthy   November 25th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Most of these hateful comments on here are always made by the same people who have nothing else to do apparently. Guess none of them have a life and really they should be pitied. They do nothing but lurk aroound waiting for the next article that has the word "Palin" and they are off and running again with the same old tired comments. Their uneducated ignorance is acutely apparent.

I wish them well as they stumble blindly through life, may the Lord bless and keep them in the troubling times that lie ahead for them because of their misguided belief systems.

Breath of fresh air? More like a breath of fresh gas. From the moment that woman stepped on stage at the RNC, with her pregnant teen and waving her baby around like a trophy, the country new that we were about to take a trip in time back to 1964. This hate mongerer tried to divide the country right down the middle. I will admit that it was really entertaining watching her clueless answers to simple interview questions. The VP debate was great. It was like watching a 12 year old try to debate Joe Biden. But i'll never forget the ugliness and racism and hate that she promoted. Her hate rallies were something that will go down in American History along side the likes of George Wallace and Joseph McCarthy. Shame on McCain for still lying to us. She was a gimmick. G.I.M.M.I.C.K. WASP lives on!

Undi   November 25th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

helen J   November 25th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

I understand the difficulty that John McCain has saying anything negative about the decision that he made.choosing Palin as a running partner…..but let's face it…..but "energizing" the base isn't nearly so effective as giving the base something to believe in…..like solid policies and proposals that could be implemented in national leadership.

"energy" is no substitute for "knowledge"!

Sarah Palin had no solid policies, proposals or real understanding of what the country needed or wanted. Her antics with "joe the Plumber" and "Tito the Construction-guy" were so incredibly lame that it became pathetic to watch.

Sherri   November 25th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Senator McCain is loyal, but to a fault. Sarah Palin, with her antics and ignorance, destroyed any chance he had to be elected.

The republican base need to think what is best for the party. Palin is a huge negative. On a positive note for the Democrats, if Palin really is a future leader for the Republican Party…The Democrats will RULE!

irene   November 25th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

It's not the economy. Why can't they just admit that they made a mistake? The campaign went south when he bet on Sarah Palin. The GOP foolishly thought that flash was more important than substance and they bet on Bible thumpers to carry the race. Fortunately, we the people have seen the flaws in right wing Christian Conservatism. We want no part of our government dictating policy based on their flawed religous views. Palin is about as stupid as one can get!

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   November 25th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Hmm … didn't the first sub prime loans start BEFORE 2006 when there was a Republicans majority in both the House and Senate? Even if we were to believe your absurd hypothesis both the Republican led Congress and President were in a position to block any legislation they did not approve of.

You also conveniently left out Phil Gramm's (R) law to deregulate the commercial banks which allowed AIG, Lehman and Bear Stearns to over leverage themselves and implode.

Greedy bankers and an unregulated derivatives market caused the sub prime crisis.

I appreciate hearing so many of the tolerant voices of the more liberal political minds out there (sarcasm). I've never encountered people speaking out so hatefully against supposed hate, or so intolerantly about supposed intolerance. Labeling people of a different political viewpoint as hicks or wackos is not productive or cooperative, it only magnifies your hypocrisy – as well as ignorance when such labels are based on your feelings about the ugliness of their eyes. Furthermore, labeling any political, moral, or ethical viewpoint you disagree with as far right/left wing is sickening. What made you and your opinion the barometer for the majority opinion? And who cares anyway about these labels when so many people writing on these stupid message boards couldn't give any logical or coherent explanation for their positions on any issue?

Everyone please just use your heads, bring the self-righteousness down a few clicks, and realize that thinking you're great and intelligent doesn't mean you are.

Madcitychick   November 25th, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Teresa, when you said the following……"All you who have nasty comments about Sarah Palin and how smart you think she's not. WHAT STATE ARE YOU GOVERNOR IN???????"

I think you might have meant is 'What state are you governor OF'? I'm not sure how to re-word 'How smart you think she's not' for you since it sounds like Palineese to me & I don't understand Palineese.

I think you missed the whole point dear. None of the people commenting about her intelligence are or were trying to be the VP of the United States of America or governors for that matter. Big difference.

Palin as VP would be like handpicking a woman you see walking through the mall and telling her she's going to be the next VP of the US because she looks good.

Do some research on Palin. Try reading the Alaska newspapers and read some older stories on her. Read the comments on those stories from Alaskans (made and written long before VP slot). You'll see that she was just as clueless about running a small town like Wasilla as she is as Governor and as she was as a VP candidate. You'll see that after just a few months as mayor of a town of 7,000 she had to hire a city manager because she didn't know what her job was.

You'll see she's made many, many mistakes in her political career because she has no business in a political position of ANY kind. It just isn't her place to be and if she wants it to ber her place, she will have to spend many, many years yet learning about her country, it's history, it's laws, it's constitution, it's people and how it works. As of now, Sarah has no knowledge on these topics.

It explains perfectly why she's gotten herself into so many messes in her state…………..SHE DOES NOT KNOW THE RULES AND DOESN'T BOTHER TO LEARN THEM EVEN AFTER MAKING A MISTAKE!!

Even children learn from their mistakes.

colwell   November 25th, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Well, you could hardly have expected John to say anything else. By saying the American people "decided" again this pair is his way of saying it's not his fault; most "small" people always blame other people for their failures…As for Palin energizing the so-called base, the Republicans have got to find some other base–an intelligent one, to begin with. But this old base is quite happy with Palin for the principal reason that she annoys intelligent and educated people everywhere–and that base is anti-intellectual in the extreme. Let this base thrive on the Palin phenomenon; the rest of us should just ignore them.

I don't think the liberals are bashing her because they are afraid. She can't string together a coherent sentence, I wouldn't say afraid she is hilarious. I can't believe republicans would allow someone like this run there party because she believes that it is ok to to take away the rights of pro choice. I would be surprised if she had an education. Those of you that think it is some kind of major accomplishment to be a mayor of a small town have never been to big city.

Paul DObro   November 25th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

Maybe the media coverage of Palin was not negitive, maybe the media got it just right and when you represent an idiot correctly, it looks like negitive coverage when it fact they tried there best not to make her look too bad, but if you put lipstick on a pig, well, you know.

McCain can't go negitive on her because it just reflects badly on him if he does, but those leaks were intentional and came from teh top of the ticket.

Alan   November 25th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

So many people so confused about Sarah Palin.

The "hatred" you hear spewing here…was brought on by PALIN! Did you LISTEN to her speeches when she was on the trail? Did you HEAR the repeated lies, the "pallin' around with terrorists" the racial slurs?

The woman threw vile hatred carelessly into heated crowds and literally endangered Obama's life and the life of others nearby, willingly, as long as it helped her push forward her own personal agenda.

Any hatred spewing her way now was EARNED.

Lauren   November 25th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

I only have one question. Why are all the Democrats so scared of this lady? Why do they have to slam her every chance they get. Lets put this in perspective. If she really is not as good as you Dems think, why bother putting her down?

Is it because your worried she might actually be good for the country, and you can see where she will make a honest canididate for President, and that scares you???????

John McCain destroyed my beloved Republican Party by chosing Palin. McCain could have won this election with a good smart running mate and his war-time merits, but he elected to chose the dumbest person in this world. Palin the attack dog that spewed negative vibes was the primary reason McCain lost the election. The people that Leader who manage the Republican party must take harsh actions and inform Plain she needs to stay in Alaska – if they want to win another election. If not, the Party I grew up with and loved will be destroyed.

McCain is a fool to deny political considerations were why he selected Sarah Palin. He cannot face reality. Everyone knows better, including members of his own party.

I'm so glad we don't have McCain as next president during these perilous times. He himself admitted economics were not his forte. Can you imagine what terrible shape we'd be in if we had to rely on his instinct and "guts" for leadership right now? Obama is doing everything right, and we are blessed to have elected him at this historic moment.

Let us hope that Conservatism bets its future on the very flawed Governor Palin. It is important for the future of the nation that Conservatism be stamped out of the nation's political dialog. Conservatism has tried to block, defeat, delay, sabotage, undermine, ridicule, or otherwise prevent this nation from growing into a better one. Conservatism was opposed to the abolition of slavery, free public education, voting rights for minorities and women, equal rights for minorities and women, equal pay for minorities and women, the minimum wage, every single proposal to increase the minimum wage, the 8 hour day, the 40 hour week, employee health benefits, overtime pay, child health care programs, affordable day care, affordable college, pre-natal care programs, medicare, medicaid, fuel efficient cars, etc.

Sarah Palin has the talent to crash the Conservative jet beyond repair, and perhaps that is the role that Destiny has picked out for her.

Phil   November 25th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Ohhh, sorry Rebecca. I saw Jack's post here about Palin and mistook it for yours. Still, the same point – CNN is getting carried away! I suppose it's good for ratings.

Mike   November 25th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

"The Shark" sounds exactly like the type of person he is railing against. Most of the rest sound like the typical intolerant individuals they call the opposition. Civility, it would appear, has no place in the left wing of democracy.

Tori   November 25th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

The economy didn't lose McCain the election. He lost because the demographics of the American people are not older white men that believe that abortion should be banned, gays shouldn't get married or that immigrants are only Mexican. Until the Republican party starts to look-like, sound-like and belive-live the rest of America, they will continue to lose elections. They will soon be the minority.

zac   November 25th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

john mccain did you know the more you in the you vip to the cnnmeay

Frank   November 25th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

I've never understood why McCain consistently states that he is so "proud of" Sarah Palin. She is not his teenage daughter, he does not need to be proud of her, it sounds so juvenile.

Toby   November 25th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

When was the last time a failed VP nominee went on to win the presidency? Certainly none in McCain's lifetime.

Trollmaster   November 25th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Those that despise the GOP want Palin to remain in the spotlight and run in 2012 as well. It's only speeding up the downfall of the Republican party that much faster. Bring it on!!!!

Charm   November 25th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

McCain is so wrong on this. The fatal blow occurred once Palin started showing her true colors and would be McCain voters had no choice but to consider (an ultimately select) Obama as their Presidential choice.

Phil   November 25th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Jack, you are totally obsessed with Sarah Palin! I realize she's attractive and interesting… but you're getting really carried away. Seriuosly. How about a few posts about Romney or Jindal or Sanford – just to help get your mind refocused?

TyWebb   November 25th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Love the picture of McCain here…as if he just woke up from a daze.

S@ndr@   November 25th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

John, the economy isn't the only factor to sink your election bid, Palin scared me away too. Up until you chose her as your running mate I could've been swayed your way. But her enthusiam to rally that scary sector called your 'base' sent me running to the Obama camp. You are a reasonable man who chose an unqualified candidate to rally her hick base, but I'm sure a lot of intelligent repulicans didn't vote or voted Obama as they were just as disappointed in your VP pick. I hope she is a the next GOP hope, it will make the next election easier for the Dems but I'm sure it will be nastier and uglier if she has anything to do with it.

Joe The Plumber   November 25th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

No, the problem wasn't the economy. If you analyze the data you will see that the polls began to favor Obama when you made your famous statement "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" as the stock market was tanking. Up until that point, you had a shot at winning but when you made that gawd awful statement, you threw the election away! It is your fault and your running mate's for why you lost. It wasn't the economy that did it for you!

Ken   November 25th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Fred In SC – You, my friend, are officially 'Hanitized'

JN   November 25th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

He still can't talk straight….clearly most Americans did not view her favorably. In fact, her approval ratings were falling before the Wall Street crash. It started with the Katie Couric interview and dove-tailed from that point on. If she is the future of the Republican Party, that's great for the Democratic Party.

Kristy Sanborn   November 25th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

cnn, I do note that my 4:14 pm ET posting still shows waiting for moderation..and other postings have been moderated, approved and posted after the time of mine..please tell you moderator from me not to run from the truth..
And 'the shark's' posting, if that posting doesn't insinuate that anyone who didn't vote for Obama is prejudice to anyone else I would have to say it sure implicates that to me.
Cnn, just look at the postings your moderator does approve..what does that say for cnn?

Trollmaster   November 25th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

McCain lost the general election the second he won the primaries.

Removing the horrible Bush taint on McCain is just like trying to remove stink from doo doo. He was doomed from the start. His countless mistakes in the campaign (including Palin) only made his loss that much bigger.

Ben   November 25th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Wow, can everyone on the left just take a deep breath and relax??? I thought it was Karl Rove and Bushies that were supposed to be the hate mongers. Listening to these posts I'd have to question that. Why so much hate for Palin? They lost, it's over, now move on. My goodness, dissagree with a candidate but stop with all the hateful talk.

Mitch   November 25th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

The GOP see her as a breath of fresh air….but just the hard right conservatives. The rest see her as a dolt. I just don't understand how they feel America can embrace a woman with so little to offer the country than a feeling.

Sue in MI   November 25th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Isn't this the same speech he gave about her right after the election? And didn't the Republican governors basically stay clear of her during their meetings? I know the Republicans are in disarray and scrambling to find their new savior, but I really doubt that the "jet around the country but so dedicated mom, " "workin' hard on the Alaska budget (in Georgia) governor," "fiscally conservative socialist," "pork-grabbing," "happy to be in pro-America" Palin is that person. Hopefully she will lose her job in two years, and go away before she is humiliated at the first Republican debate in 2012.

That Other Jerry   November 25th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

First CNN writer: "Hey, wanna see me get 700 people to make fools of themselves posting childish, hateful comments?"

Second CNN writer: "How you gonna do that?"

First CNN writer: "Easy, I'll just post yet another irrelevant Sarah Palin story on the Ticker!"

Gene Penszynski from Vermont   November 25th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

McCain is probably correct since the Republican Party 'Base' since G W Bush has been studying and courting the three "R's" religiously. The three "R's" being RED NECKS, RACISTS and RUBES !!!!!! All ignorant and all believing that 'DUMBNESS' is OK !

This is the same reason why Palin porbably decided to campaign in georgia for the Republican Senatorial Candidate. She has the three "R's" going for her in force in that state !!!!!! Particularly in the 'DELIVERANCE' areas of the state where there are more branches on natural trees than on family trees !.

iseult72@hotmail.com   November 25th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Government is not "the rock" Jesus is the rock. "Whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on a rock.
Government is not and never will be the solution to man's problems. Solomon says in ECC 3:16 And I saw something else under the sun:
In the place of judgment –wickedness was there,
in the place of justice wickedness was there.

We are not to have our faith in government, or any political candidate or even the President no matter who he or she is. Want another example go back and reread how Rome treated Jesus. Pilate was a true politician. Government will always fail no matter who is in charge, because we are humans and we all have impure motivations.

And to this comment give me a break:
"Together, they would bring brink back something to the presidency that it hasn't seen in a long time: a focus on the average American, instead of large corporations" iseult72@hotmail.com

Why So Partisan?   November 25th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

News flash, lefties: It's over. Your guy won.

It's time to bury the hatchet, and if the Democratic Senate leadership can let bygones be with Lieberman, then I think everybody should follow that lead.

Calling people hicks and idiots because they didn't vote for your candidate isn't exactly turning a new page.

joeb   November 25th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Senator McCain, at one time I had a lot of respect for you…………………..

zt   November 25th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

The economy is tanking and we are still talking about a loser/has-been and his clueless sidekick. Get real! The only tragedy greater than the one we are witnessing on the economic front would have been a McCain-Palin win (shudder)

MJ   November 25th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Energizing factor and breath of fresh air? So this is what Republicans think qualifies one to be President. God help them.

Susan   November 25th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

I can't help but imagine what it would be like right now in the ever- changing face of this economic crisis if John McCain was the president-elect instead of Obama. I can't help but see McCain and Palin stumbling and bumbling right now when every day counts and immediate, well thought out action is necessary. You can say what you will, I still think the American people chose the better of the two. At least with Obama it seems like we might have a chance of surviving this. I'm afaraid I would not have any confidence if the McCain/Palin ticket had triumphed.

Maggie   November 25th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Did McCain forget to take his medication? He's suffering from delusions and hallucinations.

Chas in Iowa   November 25th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

McCain's blind eye to certain truths are the same views that have doomed the GOP.

Sarah Palin is no GOP model.

Her religion cinflicts with most Americans.
She's been voted woman of the year by a group wanting Alaska so seperate from the rest of the USA.
She demonstrated very low understanding of world affairs.
She has no respect for opposing ideas.
She'll say anything to stir the GOP base regardless of who she is demonizing.

She has single handedly fractured what was left of the GOP base.

Go Sarah!!!!!

Joke   November 25th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

After viewing the comments here, just realized that most of the people here are so low. Full of hate, no deep thought, dirty words, and no least respect to other people. No wonder America is declining. Sad!!!!!

Marilyn   November 25th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

I really would love to see Palin as President. A rock-solid strong and powerful force of a woman who does not have the man-hating, unmatternal and unfeminine attitudes that traditional feminists do. A woman who sticks her 3-inch heel right through those who hide from the untrendy GOD AND COUNTRY.

Kevin in Denver   November 25th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Jon: I love Sarah Palin. She will be a welcome change after 4 years of disaster at the hands of man-child Obama.

Man you are a joke. A BAD joke. Since when does a man child put himself through law school at Harvard and Columbia. Of course you love Sara Flailin……. Idiot men like their women even dumber.

romack   November 25th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

She may very well have a "bright future" as a GOP leader, and maybe a shot at the White House…

…but she needs to go back home. The GOP needs to r-group, and she needs to fade into the background for now. Doesn't she have a state to take care of? Let the dust settle, the new President to take office and then, we'll see…

draz   November 25th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

thanks shark ——————-very well put and so right on the money.
good bye GOP———————-rip

LizTooProudfoot   November 25th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Who are these people who really think Palin is a contender in legislative government?…You know how Americans are seen globally? We are seen as ignorant buffoons with no sense of dignity. Since the election of Obama, the world celebrated in a victory of rising above ignorance and achieving common good. It's not just a national achievement, it's a global achievement…

Palin represents what's wrong with this country…low educational standards, no integrity and ethics, and complete narcissism beyond repair…Palin needs to stop being so ambitious to be the next great GOP leader and take the time to raise her children!!!!

Milhouse van Houten   November 25th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

Well, here we go again, another insignificant story about an insignificant female who must be salivating at all the attention she is receiving.Again,if Sarah Palin is the future of the GOP,then the
possibility of the party staying on the outside looking in is greater than
they would like to admit.McCains'statement about energizing the base
is only factual in terms of that base becoming less and less in numbers. The faction of the GOP that Ms.Palin energized proved to be no match for reasonable, egalitarians throughout the land.

Kevin in Denver   November 25th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

Theresa: All you who have nasty comments about Sarah Palin and how smart you think she's not. WHAT STATE ARE YOU GOVERNOR IN???????

Wow you sure skipped 10th grade grammar… "smart you think she's not?
what state are you governor in?" pretty bas sentence structure. You do NOT end sentences with prepositions!!!

Jay   November 25th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

The Shark…I'm glad you seem to think that just because Obama got elected everything is all better and America is now a true democracy. America has been and will continue to be a democracy. It's funny how you Democrats will say that Republicans are racist, and yet I've seen ten times as many Democrats calling McCain or Palin names than I have Republicans calling Obama names. Why is it that when interviewed on television did people not have a valid reason for voting for Obama, other than his whole "change" theme? It's because a lot of those people did not even pay attention to the issues at hand, and unfortunately some voted for Obama just because of his race. If this is an example of the Democratic Party, I'm glad I'm not a part of it.

CW in the Heartland   November 25th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Unbelievable really. If he were 16 I would say it is just harmones talking but McCain is too smart and wise for that. I feel (or felt) sorry for her because she got used. I don't think she understood how foolish she sounded, nor do I think she understood that most Americans were laughing AT her, not with her on all her verbal blunders. I can see the GOP wants to lose in 2012.

dickt   November 25th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Sara Palin has about as much future as Dan Quayle and Walter Mondale had after losing their VP bid.

Peter (CA)   November 25th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Washington Observer—
Spending time on the right wing sites I see.

Frank and Dodd are not blameless but the Fannie Mae problem is bipartisan. When McCain brought this up, the Repulbicans controlled the Congress and the White House. Why was nothing done?

And about the money…Obama got his contributions from Fannie and Freddie employees. McCain got a larger amount ($169,000) than Obama did and he got it from the board of Fannie and Freddie and their lobbyists.
I know the right wing wants to revise history but the facts are out there.

indiana voter   November 25th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

To The Shark: For someone who is calling the Republicans a bunch of hate-filled people, you sound pretty full of the hatred yourself. By your statements, it looks like the Democrat party is set to replace the Republicans as the "party of hate", as you like to call them, using hate-filled speech of your own. You are not the only democrat on here spewing hatred, while calling the Republicans the "party of hate." Take a look in the mirror!

PDX Gal   November 25th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

He is either demonstrating a bold-faced denial of the obvious, or else he is a horrific judge of character.

Either way, we dodged a giant bullet by voting him down.

JoePub   November 25th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

I never seen such hateful comments for another human being. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. There is one thing to have an opinion but quite another for crude comments. This is the result of a "change that we need" ? No thanks, I'll take an America where there is decency.

Are you kidding?   November 25th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

She is the brunt of jokes…Joe the plumber, Turkey Gate this week, cult church witch doctor, foreign policy because of proximity to Russia, the disaster interview with Katie Couric, Africa the Country, the pregnant young daughter, the baby that actually may be her older daughter's, field dressing a moose, the $250,000 clothing sprees, the folksy winky chatty stuff, Caribou Barbie…these were the topics about Palin. No solutions, no policies, no intellect.
Yuk. She set back women's issues 50 years.

Jerry, Bronx, NY   November 25th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

At this point Sen McCain has no choice but to stand behind Sarah Palin. To do otherwise would amount to a confession that he, and the GOP leadership, made a HUGE blunder. McCain may be old fashioned, but he is not an idiot. I'm sure he regrets gambling with our future, and his, by selecting Sarah.

Steve   November 25th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

It has become clear that McCain has lost his ability to think reasonably or rationally. Cognitive skills are the first thing to go as one ages, and his age is showing.

These statements do not reflect well on Mr. McCain. Either he is a complete incompetent when it comes to judging character, or he's lying to make himself look good. In either case, it's not good.

Never the less, we need Palin around. If we don't keep her around there will be a lot of comedians and news commentators with nothing to do.

Tom   November 25th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Wow, the Communist News Network (CNN) sure has some Obama Koolaid drinkers. I will love watching your Messiah make things worse for the next 4 years. Bet you will all be Bit*ching about him soon.

Tom   November 25th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Poor Poor liberals. You don't have any way to refute anything that is being said about your new Messiah so you fall back on your time honored tactics of attacking anyone and anything that does not agree with you!
Change? The new "Stimulus" package looks like the WPA and CCC – you remember FDR don't you?
How come you guys are so happy to have Joe Biden as second fiddle? The Democratic party has rejected him before! Is it because the new Messiah has no experience? Who is really in charge? Joe, Hillary, Bill?
Did we ever figure out if BO had an uncle in the read army or are we going to re-write teh history books so his grandfather and Patton can liberate Auschwitz? Imgine the uproar if John McCain or Sarah Palin had made a mistake that big!!
BTW – Sarah Palin never said " I can see Russia" that was Tina Fey. You folks were duped by the Main Stream Media! I hope you enjoy your new TV President!
P.S> Better dust off that old copy of 1984 and study up! You can read can't you? Or are you waiting for Larry King and Bill Maher to tell you what to think?

Al   November 25th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Yes. No political motivations. He chose her purely based on professional merit. Anyone – I repeat – ANYONE who supports this woman for political office is laughed at by the world. Energizing the base? Please! This base being referred to is the racist, extremist right fringe that still thinks Obama is a muslim. Worse yet, this part of the republican base has a problem with anyone who is a muslim. Because they are all "evil." Listen to the words of Colin Powell, wannabe republicans. When accused of being a muslim the RIGHT answer is not "Obama is a Christian." The right answer is "so what if he was?"

Kim J: Here we go again with all of the Obama uniters spewing their hate toward people they don't even know. This is gonna be a great four years.

The problem is we DO know them. We know them to be inept half wits due to their own statements. And IT IS GOING TO BE A GREAT 8 YEARS!!!!!!!!!

Pat Pa.   November 25th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

When he makes statements like this, I really think that anyone who voted for him should say a small prayer that things did not go their way. It is very sad that this man could have been president. Thank God enough Americans realized the truth before it was too late.

Sarah Palin has NO FUTURE in politics and I think that will be evident as time goes on.
John McCain–I hope the people in his state see the problems with this man before they elect him for another term.

brian in nh   November 25th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

What is it about Palin that the left-wing morons seem to fear so much? The shrill liberals never stop wailing, do they? They're still crying about Gore in 2000. With Obama already back-pedalling furiously on campaign promises and filling his cabinet with the same old Clintonites who were at the root of the financial problems, we'll soon see how much real change happens.

She did a great job of alienating Democrats and Independents and thankfully giving Obama the election. McCain was a fatally flawed candidate whose party forced him to pick a shrill, right-wing wingnut like Palin. The Republican party needs to stop being so anti-intellectual. Comparisons of Reagan and Palin being similar are an insult to Reagan.

Yeah man, she was totally a breath of fresh air. Intoxicating even… intoxicatingly asinine.

sandee in Portland   November 25th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

I would have more respect for McCain if he would just admit he made a mistake. Palin's energizing the base (far, right wing evangelicals) wasn't enough, and if the republican party hasn't learned that they need to step up to the 21st century, they are a goner. Having been a republican my entire life, I have voted for them in the past because they were the fiscally responsible party, but no more. They are now the borrow and spend party. Their party is either made up of extremely wealthy and extremely uneducated people. The party has to learn to be centrist and not let the far right wing control it anymore. Their base is outdated for today's world along with more of their politicians. I will never vote for a republican again until they move more to the center.

Gia in Los Angeles, CA   November 25th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Palin has a very bright future as a GOP leader??? I sure hope not! If she does, then this country is either in deep trouble or, more likely, the dems have a very long future in power!!

McCain, your party should have been prepared to handle any major issue that the american people wanted to know about. Palin was one of the major reasons you didnt get elected. Sarah Palin energized the GOP base in the first two weeks after the RNC because people wanted to get to know her. For those two weeks, her stump speech was almost word for word of the speech she gave at the RNC. When she finally became accessible to the media, American voters saw that Palin lacked everything that we have come to believe represents an educated, intelligent leader. Each time that Sarah Palin was interviewed by the media, she presented a defensive attitude. Then came the ode and buzz words that incited her rally attendees to shout words of violence — and Sarah smiled. Those buzz and code words conveyed to many Americans of color that Sarah would be a good candidate to lead the White Superiority Women's Party — but not any position representing ALL Americans.

Yes, Sarah Palin might have a future with the Republican party, if they had a future. With politicians such as Sarah Palin being the best that the party has to offer, they have no future.

Maggie SC   November 25th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

The reason for the shift, senator McCain is because of the CNN coverage and the biased news they allowed in their news room. Comentators like Cambell Brown, Wolf, B, Anderson Cooper and all the other loud mouth news commentators who like to hear their own voice and spoke so loudly to be heard over the other person/s voice. They mighr as well get a mirrow and tape recorder they like to be seen and heard so badly. Of course our economy is bad and was bad. It is not that it is any better now, it is just that people have gotten so used to hearing about it they have gotten somewhat immune. Just watch and see whn ever something comes up that is good about the Republicans and President Bush CNN will down play it and harshly critize all the good until it becomes so waterd down to be unreconized.

By chosing Sarah Palin as his running mate, John McCain showed us that he was not the leader we neede. The RNC has so much work to do to re-build the party that it is truly a shame that we still talking like this. The RNC is in ruin – so lets stop pretending like Palin was a good choice and that she has any future in politics – she DOES NOT. Please – can the RNC just act like responsible leaders – Please!

God help us – she actually makes George W Bush look SMART!!!!!

And these people who said they voted for her because 'she is like

country. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!

Deborah   November 25th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

No, Senator McCain, had "most Americans" viewed Governor Palin as a "breath of fresh air" your ticket would have won.

Given that you did not, your statement is false, just like nearly everything you and your running mate spewed during your nasty campaign.

Now, please, Put America First and tell her to be quiet and to stay in Alaska!!!

I think it's best to say that we were spared 4 years of continued ridicule from the rest of the world by getting this election right. We should all be proud of what we've done.

For John McCain, I am sure that it hurt to have seen the Obamarama that took over the world on election day, and the excitement that has followed. Everybody wants 5 minutes with Obama, and even world leaders are eagerly awaiting to take their turns to be in his company. Everything "Obama" is unprecedented, and darn–I've got to admit it feels pretty good to me, but John McCain's thoughts must turn dark every now and then–because this would never be happening if he were elected.

LyonsPhilly   November 25th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Tired of immature trolls bashing Palin and McCain unfairly. Your guy won so let's see what change and hope Obama is going to bring because so far he has not with all of his appointments. Just the same old, same old nonsense and bull. Suppose that is the reason many people on this site and at this network have such a great need to continue to criticize and scrutinize Palin.

Sam   November 25th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

How about sending Anderson Cooper to interview and investigate Paulson, Bernake and KashnKari? How about asking real questions like who is lining their pockets with those billions($) just donated to fixing the economic mess? How about asking how come regular joe would be fired and/or go to prison for the type of derivitive shenanigans played by mortgage brokers and the hypergreed displayed by Wall St? What has happened to journalistic integrity? I bet Edward R. Murrow is whirling in his grave.

Honestly do you all actually think McCain would come out and admit that she was a major player in his downfall? Of course not. He will defend his choice till the end of the earth and at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

I do respect him though and I respect that he is willing to work with the Pres. Elect now that the campaign is through. He has moved on. Some of you should try that too.

pam Eugene OR   November 25th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Come on John at least be honest. Palin is good for the Republican base but beyond that no one wants to even hear from her. We have serious Palin fatigue!
The Republican party is loosing members so fast they will not be able to rebuild for many years. Someone as far right as Palin is can not bring in any independents or right wing Democrats.
Palin needs to get out of the headline and go back to school. She simply is not smart enough to govern. She needs grammar, diction, history and world affairs knowledge. Please educate this woman before insulting the American people again with her.
A wink and a smile will get her nowhere and every reasonable woman is turned off by her thinking (or lack of thinking).
She is a turkey wink wink!

hjon   November 25th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

If Obama sort of "breaks" a campaign pledge its due to conditions of the economy. Its shows real leadership to think about the problems that may arise from breaking the promise. Its the same with Iraq. Obama may not be able to withdraw troops exactly on the timetable he wanted due to conditions on the ground. Republicans make this Iraq arguement so they should be happy the rich won't have their taxes raised for a while.
Palin was a complete flop like McCain. If the media circus around Palin continues and she grants the interviews it shows a complete opposite stategy could have worked had she done these interviews during the campaign. Blame John McCain and Rick Davis for the clamp down of Palin.

Vigla   November 25th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

McCain's alright   November 25th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

C'mon people. I'm an enthusiastic Obama supporter and a staunch critic of the policies McCain supports. Palin horrifies me. But really, if you read McCain's words, he's being very fair. Palin did energize the Republican base. And Palin does have a future if that Republican base grows. I personally think the base will have to change before it can grow, and I don't think Palin will be a part of that. Therefore, I think McCain is wrong about Palin's future, but at least he's not playing the blame game and so far he's supporting President-elect Obama.

McCain's campaign was a disgrace, but the man is trying to earn some of his dignity back. You've gotta give him credit for that.

Mary   November 25th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Listening to all this vile from Democrats makes me wonder what type of change is coming.

I don't think so John. The extremists of your base were energized, the moderates and center-leaning members of your base turned tail and fled the GOP the moment she was announced as your running mate. Once her lack of vetting and intelligence was made apparent, the American people turned out in record numbers to make sure she got nowhere near the White House.

Yes, she's a governor, but her husband sat in her chair 50% of the time running things. She has a Sarah Do It Yourself government in Alaska and as long as those people want her, they can have her! I am a former Republican, now a conservative Independent. I used to make excuses for Gov. Palin as far as her stances on environmental issues. The final straw was the awful turkey video. She needs to realize that not all Americans share her views on hunting and other related subjects. I think its extreme. It is also way premature to even suggest that she be considered for the 2012 presidental run. She needs to become much more moderate in her environmental views and more knowledgable in world issues. Unless that happens, I am not interested.

Staunton, VA   November 25th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I have a humble suggestion for most of the posters here: ever since mid-October, my resolution has been NEVER to type the words "Sarah Palin" without also typing "and her monkey-waving supporters."

Choose whatever appalling image ("kill him!" "I can see Putin rearing his head from my airspace," "wink-wink,") you like. For me, white rednecks waving monkeys at her rallies said it all about the kind of AmeriKKKa she and her kind prefer. But pick your own favorite negative image and let's make sure that it dogs her for the rest of her "bright" career.

The 2008 compaign, which ended but three weeks ago, lasted for more than two years. Don't you have anything better to do than to start speculating about who will run in 2012? A lot will happpen between now and then and if you have any sense of history, you will note that post election speculation about who will be the losing party's next nominee is usually dead wrong. Think of Ed Muskie.

Except for a few ultraconservative GOP base most of us can see the hollowness of Palin. It is ok to speak the truth even if it angers some in GOP.

Pat   November 25th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Foreign and Economic policy are both important, and McCain had nothing new to say about either of them except a continuation of old policies. Out of all the republican candidates he could have chosen he picks this odd ball from alaska that nobody knows. Right then and there he lost the election because it shows what kind of goofy decisions he would have made as president.

slim   November 25th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Breath of fresh air? That is the whole problem with the Republicans…..they ignore the people. 90% of every opinion on Palin was negative. If she is the hope for 2012, there's gonna be some disappointed people. The reason why McCain picked her is because he thought ( his campaign thought ) that the American people were stupid and all the Hillary supporters would jump on the bandwagon… and that type of decision is what turned people off….until Palin actually opened her mouth..then people just totally bailed. If they want to energize things, get a young, SMART and real person to run..then they might have a chance.

Also the party will have to let go of their far right wing ideologies (anti-abortion/gay rights) those 2 issues will divide not unite this country. It is a simple fix if you don't want an abortion don't have one, if you don't like gays don't hang out with them.

She divided the country, then the Republican party, and finally the campaign people. She has a knack for getting everyone fighting around her. It must be her winning personality.

Kristy Sanborn   November 25th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

One example of many 'wanna be intelligent people' running down Palin on here would be 'CAL' that Palin cannot put "to" complete sententences together….last I knew that would be TWO…
And 'Franky' McCain/Palin was not "BEATEN DOWN" as you put it. When you take the few million votes (not to count maybe the many possible fraudulant votes rumor has of) that they lost by, and numbers of the whole population of our U.S….the difference in number of votes would only be the equivelant of a few large cities in our Country…that doesn't quailify for your 'beaten down' calculations.

and what would you expect him to say? even if he regretted his decision in picking her as his VP (and he probably did), he would not feel comfortable coming out and officially saying that she didn't measure up.

and she didn't–measure up.

I feel fortunate that she will not be holding the position of VP. I thank the country for a change, for making a more informed, intelligent decision.

I completely agree with Andrea. Palin is George W. Bush's female counterpart. She is energetic and exciting, but she lacks substance, and this lack of substance made her lose credibility (and ultimately, votes).

I think they would do better taking a chance on someone like Romney or Huckabee!

Proud to be American   November 25th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Wow back in the day we would say that McCain is just saving face. If he really loves the GOP he would not encourage her as the next Presidential canidate. However, since I truly love the Democrate Party I say we welcome her in 2012 …… On the top of the ticket ….

Sanibelle   November 25th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

I jumped off McCain's ship when he selected SP to be his running mate. If he doesn't have the sense to keep his mouth shut about this inappropriate choice, he doesn't even deserve to represent the people of Arizona in the Senate. They deserve better. I also decided it was time for Lieberman to go when he not only backed McCain but then had the audacity to praise the choice of SP as his VP. Time to get some young blood in the Senate, especially on the Republican side.

jackjack   November 25th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Seriously, I find it hard to believe that she has much of a future nationally in the GOP. It should be obvious to most people that she is devisive, and that moderates will not vote for her. Sure, she energized the far religious right, but she hurt McCain with moderate Republicans and independents. I think he would have lost either way, but it would have been closer. Need proof? Look at how far she fell in support with women. Right after she was announced as McCain's pick, she had huge support with women. As they figured out who she was and what she fell for, that support shifted to Obama. I'm sure she'll run for the nomination in 2012, but I don't think she'll get it. And if she does, she won't win unless something horrid has happened to Obama's presidency and/or the nation.

Vik   November 25th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Let her run, do whatever she pleases. Didn't we already find out with the election that the majority of the people want someone intelligent, good and inspiring to lead our country. All she will do is fall flat on her face when she tries for higher office. It's mentality like the RNC that got them to this place, so if they can't learn to be inclusive, none hate spewing, and hateful of anyone who doesn't act like them, look like them, then the will continue to lose.

Wow…even after winning the election the left wing commentators here are full of hate and venom. So much for uniting.

You talk about how McCain put the nation at risk by having someone inexperienced as the VP nominee. Yet, couldn't the argument be put back on the Democratic voters who put someone with comparable experience at #1 on their ticket. The only difference is that Obama didn't have to face the same harsh media treatment and he's a more eloquent public speaker.

I could learn to like her if she would moderate her views, Believing in science is a good start also
she could stand to show humility and intellectual curiosity.

That being said everyone's entitled to there believes and that includes Sarah Palin. I just wish people
like her would acknowledge that legislating the bible is bad idea because not every American is of
Christan faith and to force the laws of one faith on those of another is cruel and unjust. She and
others like her need to remember they share this country, no this planet with people of other faiths
and even those without and that is freedom.

Hard to understand how McCain can be so tone deaf. The exit polls showed clearly that Palin was a "significant" factor in 63% of uindependent women and 54% of independent men voting democratic. Therefore, whatever chance he might have had was killed by choosing her.

I was going to give her and him the benefit of the doubt until I watched the Couric interview. After that I find it impossible to belive that any thinking person could have voted to put her a heartbeat from the Oval office!!

Seems to me that the GOP should be hoping that she'll stay home and raise her brood and try to not ruin Alaska!!

Sarah Palin was an excellent choice for the Republicans. She has good Christian Values and that is what the liberal media don't like. That's why the U.S. is in the state it is in. CORRUPT leaders who have been 'flirting with corrupt people'

At least Sarah speaks her mind, is a true example of a 'working mother', and does not put up with the controversy that the media have genered up against her.

She is quite popular now and everyone wants to write books, do movies, have her at speaking engagements, etc. She has had many, many, many invites. Not bad for a northern Alaskan GOVERNOR.

I really wish Republicans would stop saying that MOST Americans viewed Sarah Palin as a breath of fresh air. If we had, McCain would be the president-elect. He's not. When will politicians admit they made a mistake instead of digging themselves in deeper and sounding more foolish by the day.

What we found with Sarah Palin is someone who doesn't think before she speaks and takes every advantage she can and more than she's entitled. Not a breath of fresh air, more like the same old pollution.

Charles   November 25th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

If the Republican Party banks on Palin they are truly bankrupt and delusional. The US needs substance and leadership–not fluff and buff. That's why they chose Obama-Biden over McCain-Palin. Once again the Republicans just don't get. And they're revving up the very same way for 2012. Duh…

This is the month of November, 2008! Give me a break — and I mean A BREAK FROM SARA PALIN! Many of us could care less what McCain's opinion is of her! And the majority of us are NOT focused on 2012!! The Republicans have tanked it for this year! Maybe John and Cindy McCain could "migrate" to Russia (via. Sara Palin's house)!! They could ride a Canadian Goose from Canada right to Sara Palin's front door! Cheap transportation that would be, and definitely "a breath of fresh air!

Greed is not good   November 25th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I hope she does…it will spell doom for the GOP if so.

Jason   November 25th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Keith Oberman a liberal hater? Why is it that if a Repub shouts their oppinion they are "strong" and "forceful" and "sounding of authority" and if in the Repub view a Dem does the same thing they are a
"Hater"? Ms. Palin has one huge mark against her – she really isn't very bright and she mocks those who are. We have just seen the result of 8 years of too dumb to do the job. We can't afford that ever again.

Patrick   November 25th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

For Mike Snyder – a soldier or sailor's heroism in war is not related to political opinions of the war. So whatever John McCain did in Vietnam (and yes, it absolutely was heroic) should not be tainted, regardless of what you think of the war. He fought for the country, his fellow military men, and for American honor. Show him some respect – at least for that.

And when I read some of the posts about Sarah Palin, calling into question her basic intellect, I'd sure like to see them written in a way that indicates the writer has some intellect. She's clearly leagues ahead of most of you emotional liberals out there.

Ken   November 25th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Well, there's a reason he and the [R]'s lost. Your choice; either: (1) she obviously is a horrible choice as a GOP leader, and McCain's word just highlite his continuing disconnect from reality that started when he veered right and kssed G. Bush's rump to gain the [R] nomination; OR (2) her obvious intellectual shortfalls continue to be irrelevant to the [R] true-believers who let her be their fearless leader, and thereby lock-in their irrelevancy to America's near-term future.

PG   November 25th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Craeg fr Canada   November 25th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

People might consider that the distain people have for Palin is pretty well founded. The verdict on the Bush asmin. and the policies that the Republicans supported created a crisis on many levels in the US. People are angry that someone even more Bushy was presented as a potential leader of your great country, and they are angry that this highly unimformed person allowed herself to be in such a position. The anger toward Palin is rational. The anger toward Obama is based on false information, fear, racism and something else abour human nature that is difficult to explain.

Jim Jones   November 25th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

I'm curious how McCain thinks most Americans viewed Palin as a "breath of fresh air." I found her stagnating, and the public opinion polls suggest I was not alone, not by a long shot.

I'm also still curious how McCain considers himself the better when it comes to national security issues. Last time I read the news, most experts agreed with Obama's stances, and even the Bush administration is finally starting to lean that way, with a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq, actually having low-level talks with Iran, etc.

As for the future of the GOP, go ahead and let Palin lead. What better party for her to head than the one that is fading into obscurity, just like she eventually will?

Bubba   November 25th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

He also thinks the fundamentals of the economy are sound and the Earth is six thousand years old. She energized his base all right – they showed up at Party Rallies with their hoods on, burning crosses and yelling racist threats. The GOP will never recover from what future generations may call the Palin Revelation.

carol   November 25th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

"Obama is not eligible to hold office of President"……is that old story still out there, where do all these folks come from that want to believe that is true?
They must be wishing and hoping like hell for that to be true….do they not think if that were the case, wouldn't it be head line news everyday and why do we not hear about it????
Time to wake up from your dream and come back to reality…..McCain will not be President and Obama will, simple as that!!

Norm'   November 25th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Bush, May 2006 Arizona

"Thanks to being the most productive workforce in America, and I might say, thanks to good policies, this economy is strong and it's getting stronger," Bush told supporters.

Noting that 68 percent of Americans own their own homes, Bush said, "Home sales were the highest ever recently. That's exciting news for the country."

mike jones   November 25th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Sarah Palin is a breat of fresh air, and the people that think othewise are ones that are stuck in the "good ol boys" mode. She is honest, not afraid to go against her own party or anyone else when she thinks she is right, and she has more legislative experience than Obama. It's easy to sit back and make snide remarks about someone when you don't know what else to do. Over the next four years I'm sure she will become more knowledgable in foreign affairs, etc so she will be even more qualified to rpresent the Republican (conservative) Party.

carmen   November 25th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

"A breath of fresh air" coming from a breath of hot air. She definitely "energized" the possible swing vote to run away from her and her party in digust and disbelief. The base was always there and would never in a million years voted otherwise or made a difference in the outcome. If McCain and Palin have any doubts about this, they should check the Nov. 4th results- THEY LOST.

Joe in Austin   November 25th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Politics is about more than the base. McCain lost because he was a one-issue candidate, and the issue changed. Worse, a one-issue candidate SHOULD lose. Even worse, he wasn't really qualified on that one issue.

Sarah's best hope is not to run for office, but to get some "real responsibility", as she likes to say when putting down the work of others, on issues that she cares about. Learn something and contribute something. She would be much more viable in 2016 or 2020 or even 2024 than 2012. To consider 2012 only proves she is a "rock star" trying to capitalize on her celebrity – the same criticism she leveled at Obama.

But then, she didn't run her campaign on integrity.

the number of times McCain mentioned Palin was a brilliant individual is zero.

ANAG LOS ANGELES, CA   November 25th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

That says a lot about the GOP- sad.

Speider   November 25th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Aside from the negative feelings and blunders of Palin, what does she truly bring to the party? Most compliment her on her conservative views but views and plans and the ability to lead are much different things.

People loved her "folksy-ness" but that is who she is as a person. People thought her approach to "family values" were her strength. People thought she was a "maverick" to insider politics. As it turns out, however, more people though those were her weak points and flawed in the light of reality.

The choice of Palin was one of extreme foolishness and if the insider rumors are true, done to thumb a nose at RNC control. I can not believe that the RNC would be foolish enough to think that Palin would outshine Romney or Huckabee or dozens of governors who await their turn in 2012. If Palin truly is pushed as THE candidate and finds her way to the nomination, I will shake my head in disbelief for Americans as functional members in a global community.

Greg Pottstown, Pa.   November 25th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

I love you libs. You make no specific statements. She lied, she is a hate monger, she is illiterate, dumb or has no values. Back that up. If one of you has a brain then back up your statement with facts. It will be interesting to how many of you would post lies about her. oops I forgot you are just spineless liberal zealots. none of you would respond if i had not called you a name. I know this b/c I have asked just that many times and none of you ever respond. All you know is that she ran against Obama and that makes her evil.

Elizabeth Renant   November 25th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Sure, "most Americans" viewed her as a breath of fresh air. That's why they voted for someone else.

And that's why you lost – because you're either stupid or a liar or both – and still trying to pretend that up is down and down is up, and insulting our collective intelligence as you do so.

Goodbye, McCain. Don't the the door hit you on the way out.

here's the thing– just because you like someone and they seem like they would be fun to talk to, and they seem like they would be great to have a beer with, doesn't mean you have to elect them president! Isn't Palin kind of the female equivalent of George W. Bush? Likable, gregarious, charming….but not particularly intelligent, intellectual, or curious about the world? We've had enough of the frat boy mentality for the last 8 years, and it just wasn't successful for the country. I like the fact that the incoming president is well-educated, well-read, well-travelled, etc. How sad that somehow being intellectual is spun to be a negative. Let's have a nerd instead of a cowboy for awhile :)

Ray Anderson   November 25th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

We would love to have Palin run for president in 2012, or any other national office. It would be fantastic to have her up against Democrats. It certainly would make any Democratic candidate a better choice, including independent Mickey Mouse.

I did not think the Republicans could out-do themselves after Bush and Cheney and Rumsfield. But they have with Palin, who actually is less intelligent than any of them. Of course do not under-estimate the power of her appeal to Joe Six-Pack, Joe the Plumber and Joe the Turkey…..

Mr. McCain is a great man but he is so wrong about Mrs. Palin being the future of the GOP. She needs more experience for the first thing, but she seems to be one of those people that people love to hate. If she's not careful right now she will be another Tanya Harding, her only hope is to go back to Alaska, work hard for her state and family, do good things and later make a comeback.

Alex   November 25th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

McCain should face up to the fact that he lost on the foreign policy front too. Even without a financial crisis in the works, his candidacy offered little other than irrational hawkishness and the fact that he's not Barack Obama, neither of which did anything to secure independent voters for him.

Jim D   November 25th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Yep, it was apparent that she "energized" him…eveytime he looked at her rear or she winked at him. It's so apparent that the only reason she was picked as the VP nom is that she excited the dirty old men of the party. Of course, judging by their trackrecord (divorce, adultery, fun-with-pages, etc) that's just about all of them. The rest are braindead, stepford wives & others for whom brains & substance aren't necessary.

Ted van Tol   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Fred!

Are you dreaming?
"That one" will be you best President in History!

Scott from DC   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

I hope the GOP nominates her in the future, the GOP as a party is constricting faster than the economy. Palin, a divisive, and not a student of the game she's trying to play, will make the chances worse until the party is no more. The GOP has to come to grips with a changing and non-white electorate. When and if they become inclusive of all non-whites and not just talk, but real inclusive policies, they may have a chance, but if Palin is one of their stars, and they look forward to her running or being President, God forbid, we'll hold the White House until 2024…at least

Jay   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

hitobito, you obviously don't know what you're talking about! Sarah Palin did make a lot of mistakes, but she's just as experienced as Barack Obama. Two of his years in his first term in the Senate were spent running for the White House. He voted "present" over 100 times instead of yay or nay. Part of the reason he won this election is because the media was so in love with him and that's all you tended to hear about throughout this election, which is really sad. I hope he can live up to his promises, because if not, the Republicans will certainly win back the White House in 2012. But I for one am hoping to see the Republicans make a comeback, especially here in my home state of Virginia! I'm a Republican and I'm worried for the fact that our country just elected one of the most liberal politicians ever to the White House.

Montana Blue   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

JGalt,

Sue is correct. Palin is an idiot.

Beth   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Whatever, McCain. 60+ million people thought otherwise…about you AND her.

Palin is, and will forever be an idiot. Much like most of the GOP, also.

Pearl   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

I disagree with Senator McCain's comment regarding Sarah Palin that "she energized his campaign". I can't imagine what he was thinking when he selected her as his running mate. Why is the media so intrigued with Sarah? Once again the media insults the
intelligence of the American people by portraying her as an individual who projects political leadership. Enough is enough of Sarah Palin!

James   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Hey Sarah, I can see the end of your political career from my house!!!

Ron, Chicago, IL   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Of course. He will never concede the obvious – that he made a purely political calculation in selecting Palin and that it backfired. I'm more concerned about his seeking another term in the Senate. What is it about these old geezers never retiring?

Beneatha Mann   November 25th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

She can't have a "very bright" future with the GOP. That would make her future brighter than she is.

Anna   November 25th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

McCain and Palin are both reputable and gracious people. The comments here spewing ageism, sexism, elitism, etc. is just as bad as spewing racism. Most everyone here needs to clean up their potty mouths, quit repeating gossip, and just plain quit being so nasty. If your candidate won, please be as gracious as John McCain is in his defeat.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   November 25th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

We rejected her.

Fred in SC – Yea that's the Republican base for you!

Ignorant, uneducated, racist, and clings to their hypocritical religion because they are not able to think for themselves and let other ignorant , uneducated so-called "Christian" pastors tell them how to live their lives and what to think and who to hate.

I live on the border with SC and the state is full of people just like poor Fred. They live in trailers, did not even graduate from high school, work low-skill jobs, drive beat-up pickup trucks with the naked woman mud flaps and fly the Confederate flag in their front yards. They decorate their yards with old tires and the billboards near their homes scream about how God is going to send everyone to Hell.

Yea – that's the Republican base for you and Palin is their true leader.

Sarah Palin can take her breath of fresh air right back to Alaska. She will never become president. She showed Americans and the world what an airhead she really is. Gobble Gobble

Woe   November 25th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

OK enough already with Sarah Palin. The Repugs lost. If you think for one minute that a Pentecostal Evangelical would be good for the White House. Guess again. We don't need a Bibie thumper on Pennsylvania Ave. Most Americans think that Sarah Palin was just a stand in because Hillary lost to Barrack. That is obvious. Who ever heard of Sarah Palin before the campaigning began. Also it is obvious that conservatism does not work for America. Look at the track record of every Repug President in recent history. Hmmmmmm

Sherrol in Canada   November 25th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Someone please tell McCain to get his brain tested, the man is totally out of touch, and again and again keeps demonstrating poor judgement. Thank god you americans did not elect him president. Can you imagine what his cabinet would have looked like? Like a joke, that's what!!!

God bless America & Obama!!

Marge   November 25th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

John McCain you need more than just the right to win elections. The more you have Palin talk the less you have a chance to win.. as for me I am sick of her. Good christain women don't bad mouth the other guy especially if you don't know what your talking about. Isn't that one of the 10.

Amber   November 25th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

For those saying that Sarah Palin should just go away and get out of the media spotlight:

It's not going to happen. On this board alone a typical post gets about 150 hits. A Palin Post gets about 700. She is just too big of a ratings draw.

If people out there are really dissatisfied with her continuing presence in media, then there is only one option. It worked when the AP did a media blackout on Paris Hilton for a week last year. The only option is to just ignore her.

Lisa   November 25th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I'm so praying that Sarah is the face of the Republican Party for the next 8 to 12 years.

it's a wonderful thing to see someone who has the spirit move through her like wind through a screen..

Once the American people see her true positions on things that matter, they will ultimately reject her.
But please , oh please Republicans keep on running her.

T   November 25th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

she is a good woman, but I don't think she has a future as a President or Vice president of united states soon.
She need to try contest to be a senator . make sure she is foreign policy senate committee, shake off all those her ideologies that doesn't fly with american people.
May be 16 years from now she may win GOP nomination for President? if the democratic party nominated a dumber candidate.

SO SAD   November 25th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Hope for the future   November 25th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

First, let me tell you that I'm a white, educated female who has traveled the world. Sen. McCain, here is the thing. When you picked SP, you put the country at risk.

The RNC audience consisted mainly of old, bored looking, white males. You guys got energized by a bimbo who has a lower IQ than my cat (no insult to my cat). So you think the right pick is someone that looks like a hooker, does not know how to talk, has no IQ, watches FOX news, and spews hate faster than she can blink. Good grief.

GOP, you have a very big problem.

Courtney   November 25th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Palin is the embodiment of what they accused Obama of being…a celebrity and not a politician. She is no different than Britney, Lindsay, Paris, et al. To the end of the campaign, she was never able to state what the job of the VP is.

I think McCain meant a breath of fresh air in the looks department. While I don't get the fascination with her looks, I will agree that she is better looking than most politicians. But if the future of the GOP is Palin, they better get used to losing elections.

hugh ~ california   November 25th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

These anti-Palin tirades spread by naive left-leaning voters are as bizarre and far from the truth as the anti-Obama rumors, lies, etc. perpetuated by the far right.
When she was announced as McCain's running mate, he immediately received a tremendous boost in the polls. The fact is he was running neck and neck with Obama up until the string of bank failures for which he was unjustly shouldered with blame (based solely on partisan anti-Republican rhetoric)

wdl   November 25th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Let's wait to see what Obama does before we ordain him the next John Kennedy , who by the way gave us The Bay of Pigs, the Cuban missle crisis, and Viet Nam. Maybe Obama shouldn"t use Kennedy as a role model.

This is not about libral media, even though you love beating up on them. It is about Sarah Palin's incompetence and lack of substance that cost them the election. people like you amaze me, She spent 75% of her speeches attacking Obama but yet no one can say anything against her.
my idea of a good presidential/ vice presidential candidate is one who is intelligent, well read, good education, informed aobut world issues, selfless and bring about unity. Please tell me which one of these SarahPalin possess.

Bob   November 25th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

I'm stunned that Senator McCain is really this clueless. Unless of course he thinks that letting that 'base' run the country further into the ground is a good thing.

We've had 8 years of a C Student. Now McCain thinks the answer is someone who took far longer than the average moose to graduate, and took over 4 schools to do it. Yeah, that's someone that would bring me back to the Republican ticket, you betcha!

Senator, its time for you to retire, step down, whatever you want to call it. I'm sure CNN or Fox has a pundit spot just for you.

Another column filled with comments by ignorant fools who think they really know whats going on in this country today.

This election was the dirtiest run election by any set of candidates ever and was won by record numbers of people who had never voted before showing up to vote for "the black guy" because they were black and most of them couldn't tell you one thing about any issues he stood for.

Come on people, we didn't have a good set of candidates to choose from this time around on either side. I only hope the democrats as a whole keep their heads out of their rear ends and fix some things over the next few yrs.

Confused   November 25th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Im confused….I thought America was a nation of good natured people…but after reading most of the comments on this post….what i got was Americans are Haters…. none of the criticism was constructive just hateful…..Sarah might be unqualified (thats a different debate) but she still a human being….you "Americans" should be ashamed of yourselves….Democrats: Postive change takes place when you stop being so negative Republicans: Did any of you step up stop scapegoating…. let those who are clean cast the first stone..

Woodman   November 25th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

There was a day when the phrase "energize the base" meant something in GOP circles. However, with that power base getting smaller and smaller, Mrs. Palin's ability to lead the GOP out of their doldrums is dubious at best. As long as members of the GOP delude themselves by primarily focusing on their base, while at the same time ignoring the rest of the country, they will continue to lose power and influence.
By the way, Senator McCain: another part of the delusion by the GOP was thinking that the race was ever focused on foreign policy, as you say in the article–it wasn't. It was always the economy. The GOP was slow to pick up on that fact.

Jeanne H.   November 25th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

"Most americans" consider her a breath of fresh air???? Oh Pllllleeaase!!!! I think McCain should really be put in a rest home now. E in Boston   November 25th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Was Palin energizing the party base when she spent 150K donation money on makeup, clothing, luis vuitton bag for her and her family?

Was she energizing the base when the only things she talked about during her campaign were false accusations about Obama?

Was she energizing the party when she displayed total ignorance about constituion, domestic / foreign policies, and her lack of education?

Independent In NY   November 25th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Blame it on the economy or Sarah Palin, but 700 million in private contributions is a movement, and there wasn't anything McCain could do to win this election.

It still troubles me to see the hateful posts in this room, we really need to pull together if this country is to survive the next few months. Hate Obama if you must, but he really does represent the majority of Americans by 7 million votes………..

C W   November 25th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

If the standard-bearer of your party is 72 and obviously way past his prime, all it takes is being younger to be a "breath of fresh air." Pretty low standards, indeed!

Andy   November 25th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Keep on bashing Palin you open-minded bunch! Hey, BTW, notice how the Obama promises are falling one by one, day by day? Guess what….you bought yourself more of the same….a Chicago Politician who is bringing in all the ex-Clinton's (who were hated by the Obama crowd). You are getting your change….soon you will forget Palin and realize you bought the same old BS! Good work Heroes!

Brett   November 25th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Wow, this is pathetic and sad to read most of your hateful comments. The election is over. Why do most of you insist on being so negative to a woman who was ASKED to run for vice president. No matter who you are for, enough is enough.

Dianne   November 25th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

This is laughable….Do you think in your wildest dreams Palin could handle 2 wars, a sinking economy, a huge deficit. She is simply not bright enough and if Republicans pin her as a star they are more out of touch than anyone can imagine… she is a joke……!!!!,, a liar, doesn't even know what newspapers she reads, avoided the press…….give me a break!

Holly   November 25th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

I think it's telling that even McCain admits that when voters actually consider the issues that matter most to their own lives–the economy–they pick Democrats. Maybe that says something about the priorities of the Republican party? It's almost like he saying, "If only we had kept voters focused on issues other than their jobs, houses, and savings accounts, we would have won."

Pathetic!

Washington Observer   November 25th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

To all the liberal Democratic hate mongers, what goes around comes around. The sub prime mess, the root cause of the current financial crisis, is the brainchild of the Democrats in trying to get otherwise unqualified and non credit worthy people into home ownership. The protectionist policies surrounding Fannie Mae can be traced to the three individuals in DC who received the most in campaign money from Fannie Mae over the past two years:

1. Barney Frank – MA – House Chair of Finance Committee
2. Chris Dodd – CT Senate Chair of Finance Committee
3. Barack Obama (humm, now why would a junior senator get so much money from Fannie Mae)?

I could learn to like her if she would moderate her views, Believing in science is a good start also she could stand to show humility and intellectual curiosity.

That being said everyone's entitled to there believes and that includes Sarah Palin. I just wish people like her would acknowledge that legislating the bible is bad idea because not every American is of Christan faith and to force the laws of one faith on those of another is cruel and unjust. She and others like her need to remember they share this country, no this planet with people of other faiths and even those without and that is freedom.

NotNowMookie   November 25th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

McCain still is oblivious. Does he understand that he lost the election? Is he too proud to admit that Palin only energized the uneducated underemployed gun-totin' barrel-bottom scum of America? If McCain was energized by this half-wit then perhaps he is not fit for Senate office.

Marnie   November 25th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Sigh. Just when I think the news about Palin has stopped, it rears its ugly head again.

What ever happened to the Republican Party being about wisdom, intelligence and economy? Now it just seems to represent the Christies and dumb hicks–people you supposedly want to have a beer with? If this party gets behind Palin for ANY future political office, they have learned nothing from the past election. This is very scary.

KRO   November 25th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Is that the base now? I saw a lot of well qualified & educated people on TV representing the Repubs and yet they were not highlighted or encouraged to talk. Joe the ignorant plumber on the other hand became the poster child for the campaign. Isn't this moving the party backwards instead of forward? Just a question.

Hey I'm a Dem, but I'm getting confused here.

An Independent for Obama   November 25th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

The economy helped derail Sen. McCain, but Palin was the nail in the coffin. Too many Americans had you know, common sense; and realized what a train wreck she is. If she is a rising star in the Republican party; it guarantees the Dems many years of White House and Congressional control.

Let him be.

Debra   November 25th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

"Energizing the base" . . . . doesn't this actually mean just stirring up the lowest common denominator of voter, the stubbornly religious and the recklessly under-educated? Palin may have also DEFINED that base in a way that made it very clear that the GOP thrives on uninformed GOP-bots who are driven by fear, their faith, and the idea that freedom from the government is the cure for what ails ya' . . . .

Glenn in California   November 25th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

His dementia is obviously showing. Picking her was a disaster. What a ditz (both of them).

Doug R.   November 25th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

The overwhelming majority of American have an unfavorable view of this Sarah Palin. She's a clueless dimwit who can't even speak in complete sentences and is incapable of rational thought. Wasn't she the one who said Africa is a country and that planet Earth is six thousand years old. If McCain actually thinks Palin has a bright future with the GOP, he's living in a fantasy world. She's one of the reasons McCain was beat like an old drum.

J Stuart   November 25th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

I thought John McCain was out of ideas and out of touch with America. He is continues to confirm this.

But when you look at what is happening in the country today and the challenges we face, all I can say is "Thank god John McCain didn't win!!!"

Tafari   November 25th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

If Palin is a breath of fresh air, we all need to stop breathing! That woman is the perfect dim wit.

Mickey-Texas   November 25th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

To paraphrase the NY Governor, "If Palin(Mccain) is the answer, the question must be ridiculous!"

Charley   November 25th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Who is this fool that keeps asking, "WHAT STATE ARE YOU GOVERNOR IN???????" Since when do you have to be a chicken to have an opinion about eggs.?

What a turkey !!! Careful not to lose your head over this.

Sam   November 25th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Please John take your head out of your 'you know what'.

Bea   November 25th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Sen. McCain – do your self a favor and tell Sarah to go home and stay home

Louis   November 25th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

When did mediocrity become so desirable? I want my leaders to be far more intelligent than average. The fact that many people find Palin a viable candidate does not bode well for the future of the Republican Party.

Caroline   November 25th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Okay, Teresa…
Obviously nobody on this blog is a governor of any state. But I'm not quiet sure what, exactly, your question even means? I may not be a pilot, but that's doesn't mean I can't tell a good pilot from a bad pilot based on their performance! Any blind person can clearly see how awful this woman is (not to mention her political astuteness and insanely annoying voice!).

But really, explain your question about being a governor of a state? I'm missing the relevance of it….

Nifty 60, female and white   November 25th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Fred in SC……your still don't get it, how sad. I am glad that you are a repub because your kind doesn't not belong to the human race. Your hatred is still spewing. I take greatest pride in the fact that our new president is of African-American desent and you hicks will have to live with it. But fortunately people like you won't live for ever. I can be just as hateful as you and your uneducated hateful kind. GO PRESIDENT OBAMA !!!!

Trueman   November 25th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

What's the deal with people saying Palin will be running against Obama (and winning) in 2012? Are the leftist, elitist, fake-america, terrorist loving, freedom hating pigs going to forget to vote in that election? McCain didn't just lose (like Kerry or Gore) he was routed. Unless Obama comes up with a juicy sex scandal, black baby out of wedlock, or Watergate style screw up, he's not going to run things into the ground like W. did. So Palin, who "energized" more Democrats than Republicans to get out and vote, will not even be on the radar if the GOP stays off the bottle.
"IF" they stay off the bottle.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   November 25th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

I suspect Obama is going to do a great job and Sarah will be the GOP sacrifical lamb to run against Obama, just like Dole in '96 and McCain in '08!

Steph   November 25th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Someone please tell McCain, Palin and CNN that the election is over.

Lisa   November 25th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

The woman is a walking disaster, John McCain needs to stop pretending he was happy about having to pick her, we all know that is just not true.

JGalt   November 25th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Sue, your comments sound like the real hate inciting moron, not Sarah Palin. Stick with your hate inciting liberal media folk, like Keith Olberman. You're made for each other.

jroper   November 25th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

One of reasons McCain lost this election was picking Sarah Palin as his running mate. I hope GOP members are smarter than Mr. McCain.

mm   November 25th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

oh lord, all i can say : he is creepy she is brainless

AEK   November 25th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Unfortunately for "the base" she's energizing they keep getting smaller and smaller, I, of course mean in numbers, not in their ability to understand the real issues facing the country! That was already miniscule! Maybe she should just join Rush Lamebrain and Billo the Clown and get her own talk show. That would save the folks in Alaska a lot of money paying her expenses as she campaigns to resurrect her image. But stupid is as stupid does!

J.C.   November 25th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

I think Obama will need his help, too.

JU   November 25th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

that wasn't 'fresh air' i was smelling……

Gisele from NY   November 25th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

That's great. The bright future is that the dumb will lead the dumber. We all told her to go home, but Palin just thrives on attention -any attention.

Gee   November 25th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Fred in SC—— NEWS FLASH the election is over.. Let me introduce you to the next POTUS….. BARRRRRRRRRRRRRACK OBAMMMMMMMA,,,

:)

Political Asylum   November 25th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Will you libs please find something else to moan about? Palin was trashed by everyone during the campaign and you got your dream of Jesus, I mean Obama, becoming president. Please go get a life some of you.

Caroline   November 25th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

To Love My USA/Do You?:

Seriously, your lack of coherent sentence structure is exactly why Ms. Palin worked most people's (including mine) last nerves. While I respect her as a woman, mother, and Christian, I have a difficult time digging through the unnecessary verbiage and fluff to whatever it is she's trying to say. I wish, for the sake of her and the Republican party, she would lay low for the time being. She's got beauty but not much for brains in terms of politics…sorry!

And to answer your question, yes, I do love OUR USA. Tha'ts why I'm so thankful Barack Obama has been elected President and pray daily that the Lord guides him as he leads OUR country towards better days. God bless America!

NIK   November 25th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

I'd only have respect for McCain if he said "Gosh, sorry about inflicting this woman on the rest of the country! My bad!"

Mickey-Texas   November 25th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Oh for heavens sake! McDemtia has finally lost his mind!

Greg Hodges   November 25th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Peggy Noonan said it best. The Republicans are caught in a time warp where it is always 1984; Reagan is their Moses; and the poor olde Democrats have no one to challenge him. They just can`t seem to get it in their pointy little Neo-Con heads that the world has moved on; and all those pathetic little tricks of Karl Rove don`t work anymore. I laughed when Bush talked about the 'angry' left. It is the right-wing fanatics that are turning purple over losing power so decisively on Nov. 4/08. They are already dreaming of 2012; still not realizing they have given the American people absolutely NO REASON why they would ever want those idiots back in office, Palin is a joke!!!

rob   November 25th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

wow–so sounds like the GOP is in trouble if they think she is their bright future. They mean a nasty divisive sos future. God forbid .She's a destroyer , not a uniter

hsl   November 25th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Stop it! Stop telling us about her all the time.

RAR   November 25th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Sarah Palin will be a breath of fresh air when she able to clearly articulate her positions and offer us real solutions. At one time she was in favor of "the bridge to nowhere". She offeres no comprehensive energy policy, believes global warming is not impacted by burning fossil fuels, and collects travel benefits from Alaskans for working out of her home. Her leadership is the future of the Republican Party? She will work on her image, polish her interview skills, campaign everwhere but the question will be has she changed her beliefs that are at the core of her extreme positions. I suspect she won't.

Mike Snyder   November 25th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Some people may have considered McCain a war hero – and I'm not one of them – but his legacy is going to be that of a real jerk who chose a spectacularly unqualified running mate that speaks English like a second or third language. Why doesn't he just shut up rather than making himself look dumber and dumber? Does he think he convince us that the Wasilla Hillbilly wasn't out of her league long ago?
The Vietnam "war" was a failure of epic proportions, so McCain's part in it was hardly glorious. The tawdry way he ended his first marriage was hardly noble; his political career was indelibly stained by the Keating mess; and his campaign for president was ugly, negative and (fortunately) poorly run.
So, who in the Hell cares what John McCain thinks about anything?

Jonathan   November 25th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Sarah Palin is a 'breath of fresh air' if that phrase means attaching one's mouth to the tailpipe of a running SUV.

California Gold   November 25th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

That Palin "breath of fresh air" has turned to putrid pollution sensible people want to avoid.

BBB   November 25th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

The only thing Palin is a thread to is "intelligent thought." The woman scares the daylights out of me… as long as SHE is the new GOP, this lifelong Republican will be voting Democrat!

Bill Charlotte,NC   November 25th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Is this the same prophetic voice who said, "We have them right where we want them?"

Tell John, the American people have a better sense of judgement than he. We can tell an empty head when we hear one!

Jim Q.   November 25th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

What's been the saddest thing about McCain is how he deluded himself and his supporters. It was very telling that on election night, the flaxen-haired self-proclaimed "McCainiacs" were never told when Obama won a state, just when McCain did. As a result they were very, very surprised to learn that he had very firmly lost. It is a nice metaphor for the whole campaign — never quite honest enough on even the basic issues. It is one of the reasons it was such a failure.

Republicans would do well to learn a lesson here.

Yogi bala   November 25th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

GOP barely needs Sarah Palin as its leader – GOOD LUCK GOP.

Sarah the Palin and Joe the Plumber are going to be the GOP candidates for year 2012

John the McCain and Joe the Lie-Berman are going to be the GOP candidates for year 2016.

Kim J   November 25th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Here we go again with all of the Obama uniters spewing their hate toward people they don't even know. This is gonna be a great four years.

Jose conseco   November 25th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

She is not really interesting person, just kind of makes weird comments and awkward gestures.Maybe she should be governor of Idaho, where potatoes were invented.

HAWK, TEXAS   November 25th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

John, you need medical attention, NOW.

Independent Mary   November 25th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

The only thing she energized were HATE MONGERS. The rest of us just couldn't take our eyes off of her …..just like watching a train wreck!!

WakeUpPeople   November 25th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

He will never admit that she is a dumby! If he does he will look even dumber than she does! So sad.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   November 25th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

and that says it all…. the woman is a moron with no experience and she has a place of "leadership" in the party? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA……

E in Boston   November 25th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

McCain continues to lie about Palin's dis-qualification.

Palin energized him, because he's an old man and working with a younger, decent-looking woman like Palin would make him feel energized.

It's doubtful that McCain didn't and doesn't know that she was not remotely qualified to be VP. However, admitting that is like admitting that his intention to put his campaign before the country.

Truth will set you free   November 25th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

I love the hate mongering and cynicism being SPEWED by the mightier than thou libs on these boards.. There is the hate and name calling. You have no decency or respect. You are all animals.. I am glad I am on the other side.

Until the next election there is no president for me. Just a liar that got elected..

Bob   November 25th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

maybe, by the time of the next election, we will finally have caught osama bin laden, too! not very likely, is it?

Max   November 25th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

I like the picture matching with the story. It's like McCain is shielding his eyes from the blinding glow of Palin's very bright future.

Wes   November 25th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Well what do you expect him to say? "I was an idiot for selecting someone so unqualified and out of touch."

A bright future in the Republican Party huh? Well I guess McCain is condemning the GOP to a long stay in the wilderness if she is its bright future. Anyone so clueless as Palin which she continues to demonstrate with Turkeygate having a "bright future" in the GOP speaks leagues to how bankrupt it is.

Yeah sure, she "energized" 30 percent and repelled the rest of the population. The GOP isn't going to win back the executive branch that way if Palin is the best they can do. Come on, get serious. The best place for Palin is Alaska and she needs to stay there. I only wish media outlets would stop wasting the effort on this clueless wonder and report on something of substance.

What, you are serious? Oh, well, now I just feel bad for you……

Sorry John, most people I know saw Sarah Palin as an ignorant person and a very poor choice as a running mate.

con me not   November 25th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

She energized him all right. The old coot was thinking with the wrong head when he chose her for his running mate.

Sean   November 25th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

As party idiot maybe.

FAYE, NV   November 25th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Sorry McCain but you were going to lose anyway and espeacially when Sara was picked.

McCain can not say this Sara is smart all he said was she can energize the party. McCain knows Palin is dumb and she can ramble about nothing because half the times she makes no sense.

It would have been nice to see an educated lady out campaigning for the VP job. Many of women are insulted by his pick and how she made women look. Oh, by the way what about her taxes, grandbaby, marriage of her daughter and per diem at her house, the medical records.

Cynthia a conservative voter   November 25th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

As one loser speaks about another. Palin is history, and I am glad. Let's get some real leadership Republicans!

Chuck   November 25th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

I'm extremely proud that "REAL AMERICANS" let their voices be heard loud and clear November 4th. The Republicans don't get it though. That's because they are lacking the same thought processes as Palin is.

virginia for obama   November 25th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

TO: FRED in SC.

So you are saying that the FBI nor the CIA haven't vetted Obama to find out that he is not legal, but you did. Why aren't you working for any of these agencies instead of being on the internet with negative comments. Here's a quote from the last great Fred Sanford "YOU BIG DUMMY".

chris   November 25th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

also, to fred in SC who says

"Obama is very, very, shady…. he might not even be legally eligible to run for or hold the office of President of the United States. Keep your eye on that one!"

and to others that i have heard say that Obama would not get security clearance to visit the white house… umm your obviously wrong.

Not for nothing, but to be a president you need to be born in the U.S., and albeit the election is over, McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, which is not part of the U.S.

TNTX disgust   November 25th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

I laugh at you people as do many Americans. You got your change – but wait the president elect is appointing middle aged white men who have all been serving with previous leaders including President Bush – now that is change – you're right!!! Congratulations.

Lani in Los Angeles   November 25th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Let em keep talking up Palin FOR NOW. They won't be able to keep it up past the next 6 months. It won't be long before she's a mere vapor.

david   November 25th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

thinking mccain was a fool to have picked palin as a running mate. he might have made it had he selected say, romney. mccain should retire and just go away. he was defeated, trounced, humiliated.

CAL   November 25th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

What else is he going to say, his selection of that stupid woman mad his judgement look bad and it was a devastating selection for mccain. They can say she energized the party all they want, I'm not buying it it only energized the men who started to drool over her, period. palin is a complete idiot who cannot put to complete sentences together and yet a lot of stupid women say she speaks for them. well if you allow this moron to speak for you, you have very little to say. Go back to alaska and stay there nobody wants to hear your dumb remarks and annoying voice.

matchmaker   November 25th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

i Love how McCain makes one little comment about his running mate and you make it "A STORY". How much money is the government stealling from the citizens? Theres a strory, check it out. But you just want to beat your chest and continue to discuss why they lost and get the sheep all pumped up about the win. Let it go, and find a story with substance. MOVE ON SHEEP, THERE NOTHING TO SEE HERE!!!!

cmc   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

During the interviews he had with her, the look on his face, Don't know if it was "what the H..L! He knows what she did to their campaign, but if he admitted it, people would start questioning his judgement. He knows and the country knows what happened. If you say "it" enuff you begin to believe your lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

carol   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

If that's the best they can put forward as GOP leader…Sarah Palin, well I guess the Dems will be in power for years to come.
She is definitely an energizer alright…..the energizer bunny, as that goes on and on and just round in circles. Sarah Palin is like showing a red rag to a bull……but if they want another comedy show on the road again Sarah is the gal to do it.

Teresa   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

All you who have nasty comments about Sarah Palin and how smart you think she's not. WHAT STATE ARE YOU GOVERNOR IN???????

Don   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

It's nice to see that the tolerant and diverse left is at their hateful best again. I particularly like the ones that paint all conservatives as dumb. Typical liberals. Conservatives are either dumb or are criminals in their minds.

It is important to energize the base. Obama did that during the primary and McCain wasn't able to. Obama then shifted to the middle. Let's wait and see where he shifts to once in office.

George, AZ.   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Perhaps Palin could run with Sean Hannity. They would make a great pair together. One lies, the other one swears to it.
NORTH TO ALASKA……… and stay there.

Hopeful for Tomorrow   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

@Fred in NC — Are people still trying to push that lie on the American people?

Otto   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

President elect Obama; this is John McCain. I am calling to thank you for winning the presidency because I have no idea how the economy works.

As for Sara, she needs to return to school and obtain a PHD at least before she can run for national office. I must be frank with you my friend; I had no idea she was so ignorant. I though she had at least an MBA but was I mistaken.

There is one thing for certain my friend; she can see Vladimir Putin from her kitchen windows, and that's good for our national security.

Anna, Missouri   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

It sounds like the Republicans have learned nothing. It will take more than the base being energized to win an election. The base of the Republican party has shrunk. Someone needs to learn some basic math in the Republican party if they ever want to win again.

Marc   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

That's cute. But too bad the GOP doesn't have a future.

E = Mc 2   November 25th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I hope and pray that she will just go away , maybe to Russia , seeing as how she can see it from her house ……

Al, NY NY   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

if he needed to energize the base, he was doomed from the start. The Lipstick Fido sunk his campaign like a lead balloon and her further delving and prominence in the party will send them out to the wilderness for years

Tim   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Sarah Palin is the future and hopes of the Republican party???? The GOP is in dire straights for sure. How depressing. She was a mojor reason McCain didn't get elected…hello!!!

rj   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

i am almost looking forward to her running for president. they were able to shield her from the media or have her only sit with them if an adult was present–either mccain or lieberman or someone with some education. when she runs for president, she'll have to do that on her own. hopefully the questions will be tougher than "what magazines do you read?" i think it would be entertaining to watch her run for president…..an office clearly out of her league.

Rich-NJ   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Sarah Palin is the best thing that ever happened to the Democratic party!

midwest mom   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

to Fred-get a clue, get a life…Elvis is dead, there are no aliens in the desert and your conspiracy theories about Obama are just nothing but hilarious. YOU LOST THE ELECTION, the republican party is struggling to survive…it is time to stop talking craziness and get to work to fix the party you apparently love.

McCain wouldn't dare criticize Palin although we know he has thought many times…"How stupid could I be?"…..I dare any other republican who want to actually WIN office to invite her along for the ride…..she is toxic in many ways.

Carlos Jean-Gilles   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I've got news for you Senator McCain: Most Americans saw Sarah Palin as a nincompoop who was totally unqualified for the VP position. If Sarah Palin is the best leadership that GOP has to offer, the party has no immediate future. After saying that the fundamentals of our economy were in good shape and then changed your tune a few days later, Why should any American in his or her right mind remotely believe anything you have to say? After watching the debacle of an economy that you, Senator, have helped create by your lack of foresight, wisdom and leadership, I think you should resign from the Senate and give the good people of Arizona an opportunity to elect someone who possesses the core competencies needed to handle the mess of your legacy.

Carlos Jean-Gilles
Saint Louis, MO

Jon   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I love Sarah Palin. She will be a welcome change after 4 years of disaster at the hands of man-child Obama.

Jim Q.   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

The first step to fixing a problem is admitting there is a problem. Last time I checked, didn't the polls all say that Palin alienated more people than she energized?

EG   November 25th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

This is why we didn't pick your JUDGEMENT, goodbye.

Steve   November 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

H-Town   November 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

GOP is out of ideas…..shrinking fast into ideology nothingness.

globalgroove   November 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

If McCain truly believes this then it's a good thing he lost. His thinking is delusional at the very least….completely warped at best.

pleas, i respect john mccain, but did not vote for him. but palin, she is a total right wing wacko and i wish she would just fade away into an alaskan glacier

Jeff   November 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

McCain finally got it right: "She did a great job of energizing our base. I'm very proud of her” .

Sad that he had to make a pick to energize his own right wing nut case religious right base! If he would have picked anyone else, say Lieberman or Ridge, you would have had a landslide of the Reagan/Mondale poportion.

A Real American   November 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Sarah Palin irritates me!

Peter (CA)   November 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Love My USA—-yes, I do. That is one reason I recognize the threat that a charlatan like Palin could bring. She has no intellectual curiousity and wants to run the country like she runs her household.
She is completely incapable of holding this office, not matter how you and the other right wingers bleat for her like her little sheep.
Run her in 2012. It will be fine with us.

Fred in SC—That ship done sailed. But, I guess your little delusions is all that the right wingers have left to hold on to.

RAC - Illinois   November 25th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I guess that one of the reasons that Obama is where he is right now, is that he lives in reality. And when he makes a decision, you can be confident that he and the people of intelligence and experience that he surrounds himself with, are pretty sure that it is the right thing to do. In other words…. he never would have made a mistake like the selection of Gov Palin. And sure as heaven would not continue to deny that he had made such a blunder if ever he did! Sorry, but the selection of Palin was just dumb! I wish that McCain could admit it.

Chuck   November 25th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Fred in SC, you are very, very, stupid and I'm sure a conservative Christian nutjob just like Palin is. The IQ of the GOP has gone down consistently over the past 20 years, along with the brain dead followers of this most archaic religion that divides us and keeps all Americans from enjoying the freedom and equal opportunities as granted in our bill of rights and constitution. The GOP better start campaigning now for 2012, as they will need 4 years to get Palin brushed up enough to know that Africa is a continent not a country.

Richard A. Spomer   November 25th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

As I looked at others responses to this write up. Those of you negative individuals should "shut it", because you have not or have not done anything but complained any way! Start looking for the good they have which you are most definitely lacking!!

Linda - WI   November 25th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

The fact that McCain still maintains that Palin was the right choice to be his running mate says volumes about his decision-making skills. Voters made the right choice by rejecting that hapless ticket.

Mark Ramsey MD, Milwaukee WI   November 25th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

I was a P.U.M.A. (party unity my —). I was angry and bitter at what I thought was a primary , and media coverage, unfair to Clinton. I just wasn't gonna vote. One week after McCain nominated Palin, I was signing up to volunteer at the Obama campaign. So, like the commercial says "Thanks, Sarah Palin".

Andrew   November 25th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

The people posting on this thing only seem to have hateful things to say. I thought Obama was about a change away from destruction politics. I guess Obama supporters are hypocrites we can believe in.

chris   November 25th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

let Sarah Palin run in 2012… she is a buffoon and 2/3s of Americans know this. The people that like Palin are the same people who still like Bush…

Tamer   November 25th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Honestly is this stuff for real? Are the republicans joking?

The mere fact that anyone would consider Sarah Palin or most any current representative member of the republican party should immediately call into question their patriotism. These people are a disaster for America and the world. They are dim-witted, uneducated, and most importantly, dangerous for the future of mankind.

I don't believe in the legitimacy of the political parties because they lump and polarize people. That being said, I do believe that the republican party is in dis-ease. It is completely floundering because it's so-called "principles" are based either on religious grounds (which are completely radical, just like extremist Muslims or any religion for that matter) or by scaring people into believing in sensationalized and dangerous propoganda. It's a pathetic attempt at stealing leadership from certain individuals with a thought path that includes the common good.

DOWN WITH STUPIDITY, UP WITH REALITY.

longhorn   November 25th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

The election is over, McCain. You can tell the truth now.

SAB   November 25th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Fred in SC your a ignorant to say the least. People should keep their eyes on people like you that make stupid remarks. Some thing is wrong with John McCain. Sarah Palin does not have the intellect for national politics. She supposedly have a degree in journalism and have such a difficult time expressing her self on current issues.

Frank, Dayton, Ohio   November 25th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

It just kills me how politicians (especially one who proudly rode the "Straight Talk Express") can't come clean and admit that a decision that clearly was political was political.

Annie, Atlanta   November 25th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

That certainly doesn't say much about the GOP, but then we saw for ourselves what they stand for these days, thanks to the vivid memories of the Sarah Palin hate rallies.

Ed   November 25th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

The democrats ran a dirty campaign. McCain was spent 5-1. The democrats bought the election and that is how the republicans lost. Plain and simple – Money…

G. SMITH   November 25th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Gov Palin will be our next President in 2012, after Obama the destroyer ruins this country in the next four years, you asked for change, you got it, I just hope this country can survive four years of THE OBAMA CRISES.

Mickie   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

TO CNN: By the way, I love how you don't let people respond to the "Time" article. According to a republican source, McCain attends more hollywood celebrities' parties and events than anyone in politics.

Commedians   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Better than Obama, run by the so-called celebrities, commedians and clowns such as Bill Maher, David Letterman and Madonna. Do we really know Barack Obama, and his wife, Michelled Robinson Obama, who likely will be the first woman president of the United States?

Eddie VanMeer   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Fred in SC, you really are a bitter man, aren't you?

Florida Joe   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

If she is the future of the Republican party….The Republican party has no future………

She needs to GO AWAY………….

Rick in WA   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Palin did not destroy the Republican party. The party was weakened (it will be back) by leaders trying to be too moderate and abandoning core values (smaller, leaner government; strong states' rights; individual liberties; freedom from excessive regulation and taxes; etc.). George W. Bush did more to hasten the disease than anyone.

Bill, N.M.   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

What is he gonna say, he can't tell the truth.
PALIN is no leader

Adebukola   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Senator John McCain should be commended for being such a gentleman. What else should one expect him to say about the person chosen as his Vice Presidential nominee for the Republican Party. I don't believe for one moment however, that Senator McCain believes she is a viable choice to lead the Republican Party back to the time when we were proud of being Republicans. Back to the time when Newt Gingrich stood on the steps of the Capitol with the Contract for America in his hands. Then to be a Republican meant being intellectually curious about the governance of this country as well as global initiatives as well as global affairs. Sarah Palin is not qualified to be Vice President or President of the United States, and the next four years will not find her more ready than today.

Jude   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Well, here we go…saying whatever after the elections. You got beat fair and square. Palin was a drag on your ticket. She may have energized the GOP base but she also energized the Demos and moved the Inddependents away from you. Bottom line is that Palin is too devisive to make an impact on this country.

Bob (Illinois)   November 25th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

"Our base, and most Americans, viewed Governor Palin as a breath of fresh air."

"Most Americans"? Really? I'm afraid Senator McCain has lost touch with reality.

katiebee   November 25th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

why was this "press conference" necessary? Just to hear McCain spout the same ol' tired rhetoric about Sarah and inform us…what??? that's he's going to run for Senate in 2 years?? And this "urgent" news couldn't wait?

He just supports my theory that he and Sarah still have not come to grips with the fact that the campaign is OVER and not only is is over, but THEY LOST!! Please. Go away, catch up on your rest.

Joseph, Los Angeles   November 25th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Why does McCain still refuse to speak the truth?

djb   November 25th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

I just finished reading two articles that give advice to Michelle Obama as she considers her role as "first mom". Let me say that I am SO GLAD that the Obamas are our "first family role models", rather than the Palins. The Obamas truly have "family values"…they live it rather than just talk about it.

JB   November 25th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

I bet she fizzles out, unless she appoints herself Senator.

sally   November 25th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

really, what else can he say?

Gaylon Barrow   November 25th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

I certainly hope so. With Palin I believe what you see is what you get. And that is a person set on doing what's right for this country with no ulterior motives. Besides all that she is pretty too. So if she was President for eight years there would be something pleasant to look at on the screen when she gives a state of the union message unlike what we've had and especially have now.

Richard A. Spomer   November 25th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Senator John McCain is a very gracious and humble leader in which the Obama Administration would be greatly energized by bringing a leader of this caliber into his Administration! Obama stated he would reach across the political isle to unite, and bring this country together and this sort of action is warranted!

Craig in Washington   November 25th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Judging from McCain's highly successful campaign strategy, it's obvious he can spot a good leader.

And Fred, you are not eligible to write intelligent comments. Obama is a legal citizen of the U.S. Are you?

Judy   November 25th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

John McCain will never admit that he made a mistake choosing Palin to be his running mate. Following his choice, the McCain camp announced (to the media) that she was the most popular governor in the USA when most of us had never heard of her! Today, he says that most Americans view her as a "breath of fresh air. Who in the heck does he think he's fooling?

Mikey   November 25th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Was that the look on his face when he said it.

To all Republicans: Please react to the colapse of your party with a very hard right turn and nominate Palin for President every election for the next 20 years.

Seriously, if the moderates – the reasonable wing of the party – can take control after this debacle, the GOP stands a chance of being relevant in the next decade. If not, well………

Repubshateamericans   November 25th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

She has a very bright future for the GOP. Too bad for her the GOP is on its death bed. The youth of America are done with the white nationalist party. RIP GOP.

Tim in LA, CA   November 25th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

If she's has a very bright future as a GOP leader, then the dems have a much brighter future for years to come.

matt   November 25th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

She just needs to go away. NEWSFLASH: we dont need MORE people that "don't believe in science" in our government. Those are the people that have screwed up the environment almost beyond repair. Lets get some people that…you know….believe in science and facts and not just talking snakes and rapture and all that.

Mike   November 25th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Senator McCain is still delusional. Even if the debate remained on foreign policy, the Repubs would have lost. "Most Americans" did not view Sarah Palin as a "breath of fresh air". They barely tolerated Palin as she only really connected with the Republican base. More women voted for Barack Obama than men. Allow Palin to be the leader of the GOP and the Republicans may not see the White House for a very long time.

hitobito   November 25th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

If you are a democrat, the news that Sarah Palin is the part of the "bright future" of the GOP, this is great news indeed! There are many very smart women in the Republican Party, but Sarah Palin is not one of them. She is intellectually pathetic, has a total lack of humility, and was unable to construct and use intelligible sentences in the English language! Her education must have been abysmal! The only base she energized were the uneducated, Pro-life, anti gay, racist, religious conservative wing of the GOP. If this is the definition of the GOP of the future, they are in deep trouble! She is attractive as a female but her vacuous persona is a real negative!

Nick   November 25th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Sue   November 25th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Senator, if "most Americans viewed Governor Palin as a breath of fresh air", as you say, you would have won. Since you have some time on your hands as you are not planning your inauguration, I suggest you take a few lessons from your failed campaign. Foremost among them: Just because you say something, doesn't make it so. Most Americans viewed Palin as a hate-inciting, moronic, ill-equipped, unprepared, spiteful and race-baiting fool who quite possibly cost you the election.

Please keep talking her up. I look forward to the Republicans making the same mistake in 2012. The world has changed, and left Karl Rove and his ilk in the dust. Although personally, I can't get enough of her! They can't keep the greatest entertainment of all time up there in Alaska, you betcha!

al   November 25th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

please run Sarah….you are the poster child for what is wrong with Republican politics…and will cause the Overton window to move even more to the left

Chuck   November 25th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Truly shows how out of touch McCain and the rest of the GOP is. There divisiveness drove a wedge in this country that won't be repaired for years. The only good thing that came out of this election was that it energized people who are true Americans for equal rights for all, not just for christians.

Phil-Little Rock   November 25th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

She energized him alright. Him and his loins. Lord knows, that alien xenomorph looking wife of his couldn't do it.

andrea from MA   November 25th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

stop giving him press coverage !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sbp   November 25th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

What's the point of "energizing your base?" They are voting for your party anyway! The Republicans are always trying to pacify "their base." You never see the Democrats aiming at the far left. Regardless of how the right characterizes the Democratic candidates, they are almost always moderates. Which pulls in the independents. Which makes it all the harder to figure how W. won in 2000 and 2004.

chucky1169469   November 25th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Sara is a breath of fresh air. Liberals may hate her, and they have good cause. Many of us are looking forward to the day when she will be in a position to take on many of the liberals. For those of you who thnk you hate her, it is because she is a Threat to the liars and double talkers in Washington. Some of you who are Sara bashers, you have been watching to much of of Saturday Night Live..

Simmy   November 25th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

This must be a move of desperation for the Repubs to try and stay relevant! Bless ya hearts!

Shari, NY   November 25th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Wow! Palin stories are like the Energizer Bunny.

gary n.   November 25th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Just what are you smoking, old man ? Wink , wink.

Diane Panama City Fl   November 25th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

For Palin to have a "bright future", shouldn't she at least be "bright"? But, looking at the average Republican these days, I guess it doesn't take much to reach the top when the top is so low to the ground.

Gloria - Minnesota   November 25th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Oh my, he still says he's proud of her, and he also says that most Americans viewed her as a breath of fresh air!! Which Americans is he referring to?? Oh, the Republicans in the base perhaps!!

Perhaps when he runs in 2010, he will have Sarah Palin at his side campaigning for him…God help us all!!

Mary   November 25th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Enough about Sarah Palin. She cannot put a coherent thought together, let alone be a leader of anything. If McCain thinks she is the future of the Republican party, Democrats will be in power for a long time!

Christopher   November 25th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Was Palin "energizing the base" when she spewed her accusations of terrorist ties regarding Obama?

Was Palin "energizing the base" when she stood in front of crowds that chanted "Kill Him" about Obama and she said nothing?

Was Palin "energizing the base" when she botched a simple question like "what do you like to read"?

Come on Sen. McCain…

Jesse from Berlin   November 25th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Is that the best that the GOP has to offer?…
I bet that the GOP would do worse than this year..

Irma in North Carolina   November 25th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Sure John she cost you the election, especially the hate rallys she gave and you did not stop her and by this she was the cause of the threats on Oboma life. The only people who like Sarah are just a few republicans. You guys ran to nasty of a campaign. And as Sarah would say it was a task from God to let you two loose the election. At least Americans can sleep better at night knowing that Sarah could of been running the campaign. I will say tho you gave a very decent concession speech. Cannot believe that Sarah was so dumb and thought the VP canidate was to give a speech. Thank God your campaign did not let her give that speech, it would of been full of hate.

Will, NJ   November 25th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

So much for rebuilding the party.

gpm   November 25th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Let us hope that if she is the future of the GOP, then the Democrats will be in power for a real long time.

Bushwhacked in Eugene, OR   November 25th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

I'm getting old — with any luck, I'll be dead by the time this woman gets to be president, if this country is dumb enough to elect her.

I sure feel sorry for the younger folks, however.

Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   November 25th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Palin was a destructive force for the GOP and was one of the main reason John McCain lost this electon! I am tired of people saying she was good because she energized the conservative base. It was not the conservative base that McCain had to win, it was the independent moderate middle that he failed to secure and this was entirely because he sold out his political soul to the right-wing extremist of the GOP and selected the idiot Palin as his running-mate.

Larry Kincaid   November 25th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

She might be a "breath of fresh air, but most American's were rightfully frightened of her leading the country.

Ed   November 25th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

I questioned McCains selection of Palin right from the get go. I figured it was totally to try and swing those women supporters of Hillary and that as it turned out was a huge failure, of course watching Palin's attempt at intelligent conversation become an embarressment to anyone who saw, well then I questioned if this man had all his marbles..well I think at times he did but then he'd have a spell or two every once in a while, example the Palin pick and once again this example. He is just having another spell when he speaks of Palin. God Bless his heart.

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   November 25th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Please, God, let this painted ditz be the leader of the New Repellicans so they can chart their course as the permanent minority party of the brain dead into the middle of the twenty-first century.

David Newport, OR   November 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

I guess I am not one of those individuals McCain refers to as "most" Americans. I am proud of that fact.

indyred   November 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Sarah Palin is like the Energizer Bunny–she goes on and ona and on and on…

Wilson, Seattle   November 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

I think the campaign ending brought back McCain's dignity. He could so easily throw her under the bus or use her as a scape goat. It would be true and she would deserve it. It seems McCain is staying loyal to her despite all she's done.

It could be that, or maybe he just doesn't want to admit he made a mistake.

Franky   November 25th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

"He also told reporters: “We worked hard, and we inspired a lot of people, Sarah Palin and I. I think we look back with pride."

Last time I checked, you got BEAT DOWN on election night! You didn't have any upsets and the upsets my boy had was Virginia(by the way, what happen to "real" Virginia, huh?), NC(North Carolina), Indiana, Florida just to name a few. And by the way, my boy only lost Montana by 3 points and guess what? He only visited that state no more than 10 times and imagine if he visited more…

Even the Oklahoma City Thunder have a better say than you guys…

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   November 25th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

If she, with her anti-intellectual attitude, is the future of the Republican party, then they are really in trouble. She may have energized the base, but she is not good enough to move forward. We never heard enough about her own ideas or what she had done in less than 2 years in Alaska as governor.

The Republicans need to show that they don't hate being smart or people who are smart. What do they stand for more than just cutting taxes and being anti-abortion? What do they see as the role of government? What should government be doing?

Rick   November 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

There's one thing I just don't get. McCain (and other Republicans) keep talking about the "base" of the party. Since when did the religious right become the "base" of the Republican party? Somewhere along the way, I think the true Republican party got lost and hasn't been able to find itself. It never will as long as it keeps thinking of the religious zealots as the "base" of the party.

ANGIE   November 25th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

McCain appears to be stuck in La La Land. I don't believe for one second that McCain doesn't have any regrets picking Palin. He has to – he lost big time because of her – - and Thank Goodness they did.
