First White House Chrismukkah cards accidentally sent

A card sent to Jewish leaders had a distinctly Yuletide flavor.
A card sent to Jewish leaders had a distinctly Yuletide flavor.

WHITE HOUSE (CNN) – Whoops! A picture of a Christmas tree is not the first thing you would expect to see on an invitation to an event celebrating Hanukkah, but that is exactly what recipients of invitations to this year's White House Hanukkah reception initially got in the mail.

The invitation sent to American Jewish leaders on behalf of the President and First Lady, requesting "the pleasure of your company at a Hanukkah reception," bore an image of a Clydesdale horse-drawn cart, carrying the White House Christmas tree, with a Christmas wreath-adorned White House in the background.

Mrs. Bush's press secretary, Sally McDonough, attributed the snafu to a "staff mistake" in not printing separate cards for the different White House holiday events, as has been the custom in years past. "Mrs. Bush is apologetic, It is just something that fell through the cracks," she said, referring to the role of the First Lady's office in sending out the invitations.

The card as originally intended featured a menorah given to the White House during Harry Truman's presidency. That mailing was to have gone out today, according to Mrs. McDonough.

McDonough added that the White House had received "dozens" of calls of support from members of the Jewish community to express their appreciation for what President and Mrs. Bush had done for them through the course of Mr. Bush's presidency.

Bush is the Charlie Brown of Presidents...so what's new that everything Bush touches turns to crap. Humiliating.

As an observant Jew, I am not offended by the mistake (I actually find it quite humorous). I receive many holiday cards from both Christian and Jewish people, and I don't have a problem with people wishing me a Merry Christmas.

Just don't patronize me by stating that the trees, wreaths, lights, etc. are not Christmas symbols. A Christmas tree might have been a pagan symbol originally, but it is called a "Christmas" tree now. I could argue that the Hannukah menora is just a candelabrum, but that is just as silly.

SUre must be a slow news day. Who cares about Christmas cards etc. My concern is for the thousands of troops that should be home but instead get to spend the holidays wondering if the next second will be their last when they should be home instead of under fire because of Bush's lies and mishandling of 2 wars, citizens rights, the enviroment and the economy. If the Christmas cards was all he and his staff screwed up we'd be in great shape.. Jan is almost here thank goodness. Can't wait to get somebody in the white house that has the best interests of this country and it's people at heart.

The Christmas tree is a druid symbol.

Hey 'Not a Hater', having hate is a prerequisite to join the Republican party these days. That and having ineptifying stupidtude.

Much ado about nothing. Now if the invite said something about offering a feast of roasted ham and lobster tails or if they failed to invite any Jews at all..........THAT would be a screwup.

Of itself it is embarrasing: after all, this is the office of the president. In the big scheme of things it is a goof, and should be treated as such. On top of all the other things done by the Bush administration this could be viewed as lack of attention to detail, which is the only polite way to describe the Bush administration.

NOTE: there is no hate here, just stating the facts.

To AJ – the Dems wrecked the economy? Where have you been?

Bush and Company have been in charge for the last eight years, cutting taxes for the wealthiest, deregulating Wall Street and the lending industry, taking us foolishly into two wars that will financially burden American generations to come!

Everything President Bush has touched in his life has turned to crap! After President-Elect Obama and his team get us out of this mess Bush has left us with, we'll be so thankful Bush didn't sink our country completely!

"Ramadan here we come!" Give me a break! You, AJ, are an idiot!

Who cares? I mean really are jews upset over this? It was hardly offensive and barely news worthy. It was a mistake big deal who cares? Send out the Christmas card with a menora on it and we are even. People are just way too sensative these days. Grow up and get a thicker set of skin.

Horrors!: Wow! Could you be a little more sarcastic and condescending in your anti-Semitism?

Also, thank you to the poster who set the record straight on the symbolism of the tree! Finally a bit of knowledge and sanity! (And I am not being sarcastic or condescending. Really. Thank you!)

And now we will have President Obama who does not know how many States are in the Union leave alone confusing Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton and not knowing who liberated Aushwitz. If you consider Bush stupid for clerical mistake of Laura's staff, what can say about Obama's own stupid statements?

AJ is obviously living in a parallel universe. Perhaps he will wake up one day and realize that he too won on November 4. Doubtful though, because that would require an open mind and actual logic. By his posts it is obviouls that those things are beyond him. Just another American who is happy there is not an IQ test required to vote.
