First White House Chrismukkah cards accidentally sent

A card sent to Jewish leaders had a distinctly Yuletide flavor.
A card sent to Jewish leaders had a distinctly Yuletide flavor.

WHITE HOUSE (CNN) – Whoops! A picture of a Christmas tree is not the first thing you would expect to see on an invitation to an event celebrating Hanukkah, but that is exactly what recipients of invitations to this year's White House Hanukkah reception initially got in the mail.

The invitation sent to American Jewish leaders on behalf of the President and First Lady, requesting "the pleasure of your company at a Hanukkah reception," bore an image of a Clydesdale horse-drawn cart, carrying the White House Christmas tree, with a Christmas wreath-adorned White House in the background.

Mrs. Bush's press secretary, Sally McDonough, attributed the snafu to a "staff mistake" in not printing separate cards for the different White House holiday events, as has been the custom in years past. "Mrs. Bush is apologetic, It is just something that fell through the cracks," she said, referring to the role of the First Lady's office in sending out the invitations.

The card as originally intended featured a menorah given to the White House during Harry Truman's presidency. That mailing was to have gone out today, according to Mrs. McDonough.

McDonough added that the White House had received "dozens" of calls of support from members of the Jewish community to express their appreciation for what President and Mrs. Bush had done for them through the course of Mr. Bush's presidency.

Can you even imagine if Palin had become our President? How do you think she would handle the current economic crisis? It is mind-numbing that people want her to run in 2012. These must be peeple that dont care.

And everybody complains about the government spending money. When they do something that saves money people get offended.

Interesting that the Republicans are anxiously waiting to attack Obama. We have only attacked Bush because he has been a horrible president. Republican's don't want to even see what type of president Obama will be, they are just eagerly wait to attack.

The Worst President Ever didn't get one thing right in 8 years, so why should he start now? Incompetent president, incompetent party. Real America is rejoicing that the repubs have been kicked to the curb. Now the smart guys get to take over.

I find it hilarious that so many dems use this minor gaffe as "another example" of presidential policy. Do you also think the CEO of your company will stay up all night licking envelopes and "signing" your generic corporate holiday card? Get a grip. You haven't liked Bush since the day he was elected and will use any excuse to justify your blind partisan politics. I'm so happy we elected Saint Obama.

Thanks for reading my thoughts! I think it's cool. And I shouldn't of group the whole Dem's on being mean. It's all over, it's that sad. Why does that have to happen? Why are people so mean to others? Like the bullies on the playground! Can't we just be friendly?

So many ignorant people in this country . . . no wonder we are so screwed up.

Please raise your hand if you never made a mistake(which was made by a staff memeber and not the President himself). What, no hands raised? Then shut up you stupid idiots. No one is perfect, even Obama.

I make mistakes every year and really . . .. is this even relevant.

I don't think the Jewish community is going to be upset as much with this snafu as the one fast approaching them in the coming year....Obama and his administration allowing Iran to continue to build a viable nuclear weapon to sit a top their new pride & joy (long range ballistic missle).

i get a kick out of the radical right who tell us that they hope we enjoy complaining about every mistake the bush administration does because they will be doing it throughout the obama administration.. you see we already KNOW you will do it then, after all YOU taught us how to do the whining during the CLINTON administration.. if you had been more reasonable then we might have given the idiot in the white house more of a chance this time.. oh wait we DID then he invaded Iraq for no reason, ignored katrina, spyed on us, trashed our constitution, ... guess we did not learn as well as we thought.. so please teach us again so in 16 years when a repub is in office we will know how to start out by not giving them a chance instead of waiting until they proved they are worthless like the last five repub presidents

as for the card yes mistakes happen but you see :"attributed the snafu to a "staff mistake" in not printing separate cards for the different White House holiday events, as has been the custom in years past. " This means that they KNEW the right way of doing (they have in the past) they just DISREGARDED that knowledge and experiance.. which sums up the bush administration quite well

For Apple who wrote: "I'm curious– Is the Jewish community really offended by this?" Well, would you be offended if someone sent you a Christmas card with a picture of a menorah on it? I don't think it's a major thing. But, we have to lower our expectations of the current President since he is getting dumber by the day.

Oh, and why are the Bushes having any holiday party when taxpayers are losing homes and jobs daily? Who pays for these parties?
