When people say "values" these days, they tend to mean religious fixations that allow them to excuse any form of egregious behavior. This is sad, because it can turn a good man like President Bush into a tyrant. We should learn from this, and refuse to elect into office any man or woman who shows such tendencies.

The foreign policy was terrible; he had good intentions but his inexperience in that area forced him to rely on advisers who did not share his values.

On domestic policy and in the way he did the job of being President, there is much to like and much that future presidents would do well to emulate.

His harshest critics have failed to clearly articulate why he should be considered incompetent or to present evidence of malice or deceit.

Bush is a good man and an effective leader, and he had generally good domestic policies. But there was a serious conceptual gap between his understanding of international problems and his prescriptions for them on the one hand, and the true nature of those problems and the best approaches to them on the other.

And by the way, this conceptual gap is not limited to Bush; it has been a problem for America generally in the post-Cold War era.

How nice to know that he feels ok with sending our troops to die in Iraq when the attackers where in afg/Pakistan. It will take awhile to wash off all the blood on his hands. Bush's intentions are irrelevant when paired up with what has been carried out against humanity in order to achieve them. His "legacy" will be one of a man who's naivety and poor judgement allowed others to effectively run their own agenda. One that was representative of a narrow sliver of special interests and certainly not in the interests of the american people. This is what happens when we elect a president who as a man has fallen short at every venture and prospect he has come across. A man who did not earn his position by selflessness, and hard work, but by riding the coattails of his father, and the repbulican election machine.

President Bush was dealt a tough hand on 9-11 and did the best anyone could have done. The rabid attacks from the Left began the day after the 2000 election was decided. It's clear that for Bush winning the White House was for extrinsic motivational factors only. I remain dubious that he had any clear positive vision for the country other then helping line the wallets of the wealthy on the blood of others, and I don't see him as being engaged in the political process once he hands the reigns over to Obama on January 20th, 2009.

For Bush, 'winning' the White House is his trophy, he will certainly not leave the world, or US more empowered then he took office. American history is revisionist history, so I expect that Bush will go down in the books as being an unwavering, determined commander-in-chief who stuck to his guns. Sad, but in all reality probably true.

Bush believed that he had a mandate from God to liberate Iraq and set up a democracy. That he lied to Congress and the people of the US isn't going to shake his belief that he did what God told him to do. As a social worker in a nursing home, I deal with the elderly and their families on a daily basis. And I can tell you first hand, the Medicare prescription drug program that Bush claims "helped elderly" could not be further from the truth. It has been a nightmare since it rolled out in 2003. So many are in the donut hole and their costs have increased dramatically. But I guess a president with "values" only sees things through his narrow lens. The same lens he uses to desribe as the "liberation of 50 million"....Iraqis? This man is so in denial, no wonder he will go down in history as the worst president in history...except in his own warped world!!!!! Good-bye and good luck. although my grandson was fighting both in iraq and afghanistan, i still think that President Bush had certain information that led us to this. whether it was correct information or not is not the issue; he thought it was and did what anyone else would have done to protect this country. i don't think any president has ever gone into a war knowing it was not a necessary action; at least not in the United States. many men and women who fought the war and suffered or are suffering now because of it did not do so in vain; please let's remember this President (Bush) as a President who did not back down when confronted even by members of his own cabinet. He believes what he did was and is correct and was not bullied by fear. I have had and still have a great deal of respect for President Bush; thank God we were born in the USA where disagreeing with him doesn't get you killed or worse. Thank you President Bush for doing what had to be done. May God bless you and Mrs Bush when you are finally relieved of this job and can go on to a normal life.

President Bush had a very difficult tenure in office. He quite frankly, had to deal with things no other President has ever had to dealt with. In the process, mistakes were made....people became frustrated, but in a situation like we faced seven years ago, if anybody thought we were going to recover from that with no mistakes being made....well then you are insane.

I'm seriously trying to remember one good thing Bush did in the last 8 years....something Americans will remember him and be grateful for....and, I'm sorry but I have nothing.

He did have a very unlucky presidency...no one really blames him for all the tragedies be it security, economic, or natural catastrophes. What I personally hold against him is the way he reacted, or not acted, to them. All these events were missed opportunities to do something great for the country and for his name...in fact, leaders are not proven great by a "smooth sailing" presidency, but by how they showed strength, good judgment, and empathy during the hard times.

Farewell Bush, I'm glad you never gave up your values...but you might want to redefine your values.

Remember, the UN security council had to take the meeting to Nairobi, Kenya. You worked so hard through Sen. Danforth to bring an end to the civil war in Sudan even though you didn't do enough in Darfur.

A Reality to Remember: The last eight years, with the Bush-Cheney policies, have proven beyond any doubt that cutting taxes for the wealthy and/or patronizing Special Interests neither stimulates the economy nor does it create jobs. What we have experienced really indicates the exact opposite. Small businesses and all businesses simply do not thrive and hire people because their taxes are lower but rather grow because the economy is good and because people are spending money; that is simply Business 101 honesty. Then the reality is that the way to increase income for businesses and even for the wealthy is to simply insure more people have more money to spend. The ‘trickle down’ theory is a fraud as our economy has always been more of a ‘bubble up’ action and then stimulating it at the bottom really does benefit everyone. The rationalizing that more consideration for the top end stimulates the economy is not only false but it causes the focus to be in the wrong place and to be counter-productive for everyone. Giving more money to those who already spend all they want on whatever they want only makes the wealthy wealthier and likely stimulates campaign contributions but not the economy. That is one thing the Republican Party under GWBush’s leadership has thoroughly and clearly demonstrated and is something that should be remembered.

I have to laugh when people say Bush 'is the worst president in the history of this nation' because apparently they do not know their history. Try reading about and learning about Grant and Hoover. Andrew Jackson was impeached as well as Grant due to corruption. I'd say that Bushes values are very askewed. Hence the conditions for which he is leaving the next president. But it's OK. He has good "christian" values that he tried to use to take freedoms away from millions of Americans. Boy what values! I guess if you say you are a "Christian", whether your values are evil or not really is irrelevant and we should all be thankful. NOT!!!

I have great respect for the office of the POTUS. But individuals have to earn my respect. He lost mine when the world discovered that Iraq did not have any WMD. He lied to the world and took us into a war where thousands of our American heroes, and thousands of innocent Iraqis have died. That's some legacy, Mr. Bush. I hope you picture those innocent faces – and those who are not jobless and hopeless because of Wall Street deregulation – while you retire in Texas.

The first 3 individuals to comment provided emotional responses... decisions need to be logical. Bush's decisions (though many were wrong) were, in fact, logical.

We as Americans are short-sighted and impatient - all good things take time. Many of Bush's decisions, while not popular, will be proven logically sound ones in the years to come.

Mr. President please tell us the values you came into office with. You tried to sell us a "war of choice" by invading Iraq by lieing to us about "the pending mushroom cloud". You lied to us in your "State of the Union" speech. You came into office the most intellectually detached President in modern history. You appointed policitcal cronies; rewards for their loyality to you rather than their intelligence and experience. You promised to "work together for the common good" yet presided over the most partisan White House in history. Your "fiscal conservatism" turned budget surpluses into a mountain of debt. And now as you leave office you want to be remember as someone who didn't sacrifice their values. Perhaps the outcome would be differnt if you had. May history be fair to you. Your presidency is a colossal failure!!
