(CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama issued the following statement Friday evening regarding news American citizens are among those who have lost their lives during the attacks in India:

"Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the American citizens who lost their lives in the outrageous terrorist attacks in Mumbai. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and with all who have been touched by this terrible tragedy," Obama said in the statement.

"These terrorists who targeted innocent civilians will not defeat India's great democracy, nor shake the will of a global coalition to defeat them. The United States must stand with India and all nations and people who are committed to destroying terrorist networks, and defeating their hate-filled ideology," he also said.

"There is one president at a time. I will continue to closely monitor the situation on the ground in Mumbai, and am grateful for the cooperation of the Bush Administration in keeping me and my staff updated. We fully support the Bush Administration's efforts to protect American citizens and assist the government of India during this tragic time."

Griff what are you on acid?....Haven't you learned anything from the past eight years. You may be a republican but i doudt if your living as well as Bush,Cheny,Rumsfeld or h*ll the white house caretaker for that matter.Do you honestly think when you hear what his approval rating is that the american people are STUPID and would place another republican to the helm of this country.Have you lost your job yet because if not you very well may be soon and then you can go to Texas and see if Bush will offer you one since your so gun ho having him re-elected for a third term.Everyday you post these hateful comments about Obama and guess what I'm loving it because I think Obama's nomination is eating the h*ll out of you because you know he is for change and you can see it progressing everyday with smart people no matter if they are former Clinton members ,old or new Washington politians they are smart and the best.So keep it up and soon your comments will become more and more ignorant that you'll become confused by your own words then you'll just stop posting because then realistically you'll have no choice but to eat your own words.Good night and have a good life

i continue to be astounded by the reactions to global terrorism. Has anyone ever thought why these people would think that mayhem or strapping a vest with
C-4 and blowing themselves up is their best option? Clearly they have the ability to think and analyze and plan. But in their mind they are fighting Western Imperialism. They see their countries exploited by western multinationals with impunity. They see civilians killed with impunity, women and children. They see their governments who should protect them in league with these entities exploiting them and they look for meaning and purpose to hold onto. Often they look to religion and extreme religion to give order, direction , and purpose. They are disaffected, disillusioned, and angry at the injustice as they see it from their perspective and the incongruity because their perceived tormentors propagandize a doctrine of human rights, equality, justice, fairness and equity. If their ever is to be any real lasting inroads made against terrorism we cant simply kill them all which seems to be the mentality of Western thought. We have to look at these people as human beings worthy of dignity and respect and not be hypocritical for the sake of exploiting them and the resources they control. They need hope and change and food and jobs and education and some degree of certainty that bombs or drones will not destroy them. It is from this point of view and the resulting despair that terrorism is born and continues to grow worldwide.

Have you read these posts...you are accusing the republicans of doing the exact same thing that the liberals have been doing to Bush for years.

Why is it ok to treat Bush with such disrespect, but not ok to criticize Obama....... without being labeled a racist, closed minded, or hateful?

For the people blaming Bush for everything....He has made some mistakes, but keep in mind that the Democrats have had control of the congress for the last two years. During which time, Gas went $4.00 a gallon, foreclosures skyrocketed, and the unemployment numbers went up.

"It is really obvious to me that no matter WHAT Obama says the right wing Obama haters will find something negative about it. He could say "good morning" and they would find something wrong with that. Must be sad to be so bitter and hateful that all you can do is sit by a keyboard and whine and type all the negativity that some do. You don't have to like the man nor support him nor respect him, as an American you have that right. But I also hope that your bitterness and hate doesn't consume you because you're going to have from 4 to 8 years to keep doing it."

Lost In Texas – Take out the words Obama and switch with Bush and then you have the same situation from the last 8 years. Doubtful that most Obama supporters would see it that way... this is why we're headed in the wrong direction. It's not our leaders... the blame rests on Americans inability to support anyone if they dont' share their same views.

Politics suck.

rm   November 28th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

@Jim in Florida:

You demand results from Obama? Too bad you didn't demand the same of Bush.

JAN   November 28th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Jim in Fllorida...what are the demands you ever put forward to President Bush in the past 8 years? BTW...if none, then you think that you can now flex your muscles at PE Obama? FYI...not this time and shame on you b/c you should have a long list for the past 8 years!

All of you asking for Obama's change on this board have either not been following the events of this week or are stubbornly refusing to acknowledge the fact that a reporter (Ed Henry) asked Obama a question about where the change was and the PE Obama responded that as the executor change comes from him.

Economic advisors from Clinton error would be on anybody's shortlist unless, one did not live through the economic boom btn 1992-2000. Then, the surplus USA had when Clinton handed reigns of Power to the Bush Adm.

OMG! the deficit Obama is inheriting will be in tens of trillions!!!

FL for Obama   November 28th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Jim, you "demand" results? Well, since you voted for McCain/Palin, you got your results. Obama is not the President yet, so if you want results, why don't you call Washington and ask Bush to do SOMETHING while he's still in office. DEMAND that he take care of the terrorists...you are a simpleton...and a disgrace from Florida.

Mike   November 28th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

To Shelly, IN November 28th 7:32pm

You exemplify the problem with a lot of liberals and democrats. You keep waiting for the government to take care of you " In other words, the money will trickle down. Well, I'm still waiting and it's not happening" When the economy is working, the money trickles down in the form of Jobs, not government handouts. Stop waiting for someone to take care of you and start taking care of yourself.

Mike   November 28th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

And these are the types of people that Obama wants to sit down and reason with.

My condolences to all the victims and their families.

mm, are you stupid? Obama isn't in the white house; yet, you're making a judgment?

Chipster   November 28th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

People are so anxious to get a fresh start with an intelligent and educated President. It seems that everyone is sort of offering to help Bush pack and – do ya need a ride to the airport – sort of rush. However, Obama is not the President yet and some have expressed disappointment that he hasn't begun to make changes yet. There is adequate evidence that he is gathering a skilled team – so will bring vital experience and others fresh ideas. There's a lot of damage to undo and it will take time, hard work, and patience. So much depends on the success of this new Administration. They will need our support.

dustin   November 28th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

mm: you do realize he isn't president yet, what is he suppose to do other than say he sends his condolonces, i kinda doubt you voted for obama, you seem to lack the sense to have done that

Mwalimu Daudi   November 28th, 2008 9:55 pm ET

"These terrorists who targeted innocent civilians will not defeat India's great democracy, nor shake the will of a global coalition to defeat them."

What coalition? Obama and the Democrat Party told us that 9/11 – and everything that followed – was all the creation of George Bush and set out to destroy anyone who took an aggressive stance against Islamofascists. Hate-filled leftist maniacs set out to punish pro-coalition governments in Great Britain, Spain, and Italy – and succeeded. Or was all that Democrat talk of “losing the support of our allies” just another Democrat lie?

In the middle of a war we traded Winston Churchill for Neville Chamberlain. Nice going, Obamanation!

GIVE PEACE a CHANCE   November 28th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Give Peace a Chance Please.

The recent attacks in Mumbai have the potential of causing reprisal attacks. This would be just as wrong as the terrorists. Lets take a a page from Gandhi and modify and use his techniques.

First a Fact:
The only way these radical groups will stop is when modern/moderate Muslims stand up to them. For various reasons this is not happening.

So until there are no terrorist attacks in India for one year we will all boycott any Muslim business. This will not be easy but it is important as much as possible. Don't go to their restaurants, shop at their stores or even hire them. Walk away and do business with a Christian, Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, Mormon or someone who has no religious ties.

I know some people say "listen to the terrorists and negotiate with them." This will just lead to more demands and it will never end.

Let us try for peace by a simple boycott, it may be the only chance the world has.

If you can try to send this to one person for every victim of the terrorist attacks. That would be the least you could do.

Simmy   November 28th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

God, please help the people in Mumbai. Comfort those that mourn. Thank you.

What, pray tell, do you expect him, specifically, to do?

Joyce   November 28th, 2008 9:45 pm ET

MM-Barack Obama is President-Elect. He is NOT the president until January 20. After that date, you may look for change and if you don't see it, complain. Until then, be patient.

Ernie   November 28th, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Never give in to terrorism! We can't let them win!

Obama will have the nerve and the fortitude to do what needs to be done – a cool and steady hand.

It is so sad to see all the posts from such negative Americans?? – Shut your mouths and open your hearts and ears! there are such brave and good people all over the world – we will all stand in the end against this evil – wait and see the spirit of good will prevail. It will take a united world to defeat the horror that terrorism uses to try to divide us. It will take time and intelligence – not just chest beating and ugly words.

Paul   November 28th, 2008 9:41 pm ET

to Barbara in NC I do believe you will be disappointed once Obama is in office. You sound as if everything will be peaches and cream once he's in office. the Dems in Congress are already fighting amongst themselves. It will be hard to get anything done. By the way the President has been on the phone to the Indian Prime Minister seeing what the United States can do to help and not just sitting on his thumbs. And to True Independent The Pakistani government has been cooperating with the US for years and there are still problems. Do you think the terrorists will stop every just because Obama takes office? I hope Obama does well president but I'm a wait and see type.

Obama has stated all along that the terrorist are near the borders of Pakistan . I think this is proof, and that sanctions against Pakistan need to be an option. We can make a stand by capturing Bin Laden and letting the Pakistanian government know they will bring him to us or face the consequences.

Gisele from NY   November 28th, 2008 9:17 pm ET

Jonathan M in a Red State wrote" It's acts like these that make people want to kill Muslims". Why would you want to kill anyone if you hate terrorism? Even worse, it is Muslim extremists who are involved in this kind of terrorism, not Muslims. Big difference. Until you know the difference, you will continue to be as hate-filled as the terrorists themselves.

I find it totally incongruous that Americans act so surprised and outraged at the attacks in Mumbia.
An illegal war in Iraq America has killed 1,200,000m people countless tens of thousands in Afghanistan dead, used mercenaries ( illegal combatants,Terrorist) currently 160,000 in Iraq. Tortured indiscriminately freedom fighters and non combatants including teenage children.
Quite frankly America and Britain deserve all they get maybe hopefully this will make these two terrorist states think twice about mounting another war using these illegal tactics, the only way to resolve this is to bring the war criminals responsible for these tactics to the Hague war crimes tribunals to be hung, just like Saddam Husein. Bush and Blair should face the same Gitmo methods of extracting information to be used against them in the war crimes trials. .

They need more than talk and no show out of you OBAMA . If you're going to be President you will have to act when terrorist strike nations like this. In other words be ready to send troops to where they're needed. If you haven't the stomach for it as so many Americans have then you're the wrong man for the job. Talking of withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan is not on the table for stalwart Presidents. And a tough man is what we need to run this country. Yhave to make tough decisions.and not listen to the whiners. The children of flower children will let America sink.

carlton barker   November 28th, 2008 8:47 pm ET

crime terrorism is reported on the news constantly. It induces crime. they get noticed. But if no crime or terrorist was put on TV there would be no use in crime/terrorism. Its all done for attention, if no attention then whats the effort? it TV programs were restricted to only kind news then we would be in a better world. However, they wouldn't make as much money. I hope one day this happens. I love to hear about nice things but its all about crime and terrior. Carlton Barker

Suren Mahidhara   November 28th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

This carnage has been going on for almost 48 hours now. I strongly suspect that the terror outfits infiltrated and have the "embedded" employees in place at these Hotels. Once the operation started the "embedded" employees joined the "storming terrorists". Indian Hotels employ more help per guest in the luxury Hotels than the ones in the West.

These terrorists can't act without sleep for 48 hours. Someone has to releive them when they rest. Unfortunately this may go on for a couple of more days if not more since the innocent people caught in the fire and structures have to be saved.

Pres.-elect Obama has-and this should be expected of him-in an eloquent manner addressed the horror of the effects in Mumbai caused by a hateful band of religious extremist thugs. In doing so it must be noted that B.O. chose to indirectly include the outgoing president in a civil and positive tone; Wich is thankfully better than some of the vile and outrageous comments that have emerged from some quarters regarding the legacy of pres. Bush.
The tragedy od Bush's tenure,it can be argued, was his self induced
"mission" to bring "democracy" to the countries of the world, even if those countries did not request it,or even were ready to accept this type of government. It was perhaps his arrogant show of telling the world that America is giving the undisputed best example to be followed.Nevertheless, under NO circumstances do we have the self determined right to villify this man who has also shown us many good sides of his character; After all,it is WE who wanted him as C.I.C,judging by our past voting margins........

I am slolwy being so dissapointed at Obama, he is doing the same thing every other president has done..

we are now stuck with the same old same old clinton dynasty
just mark my words, in a few years, hillary will have chelsea run for senate
now obama in his statements, while i want him to recognize the loss and tragedy of our citizens, what about the lives of the Indian people, the Jewish, and others..
it is like the same old same, old,

I am totally so dissaopinted and sad WHERE IS THE CHANGE????
i have heard teh same statements from old billary, and old bush..
old politicians..
this is sad.. very sad..
to think i gave him my vote and the little money i could not afford, just like millions

Jonathan M in a Red State   November 28th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

It's acts like these that make people want to kill Muslims (let's face it, these people were Islamic terrorists targeting Westerners). People overseas don't play the same ball we do here. They will kill who they want when they want when it serves thier purpose. Why should we not do the same? I'm not trying to incite hate and I hope you won't see me as that way. I'm just trying to convey the facts that other people don't have the same world views as we do. They will kill children based on the knowledge that thier is an afterlife and they will be rewarded. But is that a reason to rob a child of his/her life? Also, in times long forgotten holy men were untouched by battle. They were viewed as medical help and were not to be touched on the battlefield. A rabbi was killed in this attack. Keep this in mind

Texas Teacher   November 28th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Well said, Mr. President Elect, well said...

I can't help but notice as I watch the constant coverage of this event that the terrorists inside the buildings know exactly what is going on outside including who is headed toward the building, because the media is broadcasting that information constantly! TrueIndependent   November 28th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

This is weird, but this was what Obama warned about 3 years ago when he said the Iraq invasion was a mistake and a wrong focus. Then, I thought Obama was being gloomy.

I am sure that the attacks in Mumbai were intentionally orchestrated by the terrorists so that blame will be placed at the door of the Pakistani government. The goal is to resurrect the rift between India and Pakistan.

When this happens, Pakistan will be distracted from cooperating with the Obama government in getting rid of terrorists hiding in the Pakistan/Afghan border. The terrorists must be scared of the support Obama will get and the potential success in neutralizing them in that area.

I hope for the sake of world peace, all parties are calm and rational. Especially when you note that both countries have nuclear weapons.

This really is the time for talking. We need to come up with solutions for this global challenge.

I hope those who post on this unfortunate incident will at least be non-partisan, and come up with solutions.
