Power resigned from Obama's campaign earlier this year.
Power resigned from Obama's campaign earlier this year.

(CNN) — Samantha Power, the Obama foreign policy adviser who stepped down from her post earlier this year after labeling Sen. Hillary Clinton a "monster," is now working for the president-elect's transition team.

According to the Associated Press, Power is part of a team of foreign policy experts tapped by President-elect Obama to help ease the transition at the State Department — the agency Clinton is expected to head up.

Power is also formally listed as part of the State Department agency review team on the president-elect's official Web site and could directly work with Clinton should she be nominated, as expected, for the Secretary of State job.

Power stepped down from the Obama campaign in March after she called Clinton — then Obama's rival for the Democratic nomination — a "monster" and someone who "is stooping to anything." The comments came in an interview with a Scottish newspaper.

"You just look at her and think, 'Ergh,' " Power also told The Scotsman then. "The amount of deceit she has put forward is really unattractive."

Power quickly issued an apology for the comments, but resigned her post days later.

"I made inexcusable remarks that are at marked variance from my oft-stated admiration for Senator Clinton," Power said in her resignation statement.

The Obama transition team did not comment on Power's new role.

Power is currently a professor at Harvard University and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2003 for her book, A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide. In 2004, Time Magazine labeled her one of America's top 100 scientists and thinkers.

The comments were an over-reaction and regrettable. However, let the truth be told…Hillary did lose her identity towards the end of the primaries by resolving to the "kitchen sink" strategy. At times, her attacks had a tone of malicious desperation and I personally could not recognize the Hillary I once knew. Much like what McCain turned into towards election day.

So, Samantha Power does not owe Hillary any retraction. At least not any more than Hillary owes Obama.

I will never forget this primary season. The Democrats have discouraged me from every voting for a Democrat again. The way they threw Hillary under the bus and the way the media portrayed Hillary as the attacker when clearly Obama was the instigator. I still believe Hillary should have been the nominee, not Obama the fraud.

our country is in the worst shape that any of us has ever seen, obama does not have a magic wand, of course it will take time for our country to get better, but obama has already shown more leadership since his big win than what we've seen from our present leaders in the last 8 years. OBAMA-BIDEN bless them both.

Clinton ran a horrible and negative campaign, and the way she and her followers demanded Obama help her pay her campaign debt was disgusting. I would have reacted the same way as Powers did.

Samantha Powers is awesome. A great thinker and a very good communicator. Something we arent used to after 8 years of the Worst Presidency Ever.

At the risk of sounding redundant! Obama is only the President Elect! But he will choose whom he wants for all posts…. and it does not matter what any of you disgruntled loosers have to say about it. This is a man with high intelligence… he will listen to the smartest minds available… then make his OWN decisions!

Seriously…. Repubs…. YOU LOST….. SUCK IT UP! :)

Some of you people on this blog really need to just sign off. Has anyone talked to Obama to find out the real reason for hiring this woman? Has it ever occurred to any of you that there is probably a "real story" and a "real reason" that CNN does not know? CNN don't know everything. Neither does either of you! This is Obama's cabinet and he can chose whoever. He can hire Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble as long as it helps to get us out of this mess we're in! Yabba Dabba Doo!

I'm sure Powers and Clinton have had their hugs, kisses and apologies and it's all over with. Washington can't handle any more drama. So stop with the hankering and let's get this country moving. We have about 2 more months! Yippie Yie Yay!

C'mon!   November 29th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Really, CNN? Really looks like I've said it before? Well then POST IT, YOU FLAKES!

Powers was an Obama surrogate. She said exactly what she was told to by the Obama campaign. Now it's pay-back time, just as it is for all good little surrogates, such as Dashle and Richardson.

Pat in IL   November 29th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Some of these negative comments are so far off base that they don't warrant even getting upset about. They are being made by non-thinking people who don't understand intentional, intelligent leadership when they see it. All they understand are the FOX News and Rush Limbaugh "sound bites". Think for yourselves, and think intelligently. No matter what party and no matter what foibles during an incredibly negatively heated campaign, Obama would be foolish to ignore real talent, and I trust him to use that talent wisely.

Obama Now More Than Ever   November 29th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

Could the hatefest please end now? This woman has a right to her opinion. Hillary did run a nasty primary campagin. McCain and Palin ran the nastiest and most slanderous campaign in history. We the People are sick of it. If you cannot talk about the issues and what you will do and why we should vote for you then you should not run for office.

I don't want to hear lies and distortions and slander against your opponent. It shows your lack of character and integrity. This woman resigned because Obama would not allow his camp to run a dirty campaign. Sometimes people say things they shouldn't in the heat of the moment. However, constant attacks, distortions of truth, and outright lies we saw the Republicans unsuccessfully use need to stop. The election is over and the Republican Party is still telling lies and tryng to keep their hatefest going.

Obama is a good and decent man and he will be a great President. He has surrounded himself with intelligent and experienced people. He has a huge Republican disaster both economically at home and foreign relation and war nightmares to resolve. It will take all of us in support of OUR President to start to turn this nation around and actually return it to the TRUE values we used to know and could trust from our leaders.

CNN – I don;t care what some person I never heard of said a year ago. If she is qualified for the position she is being given then great, Enough with the tabloid headlines. I thought you consider yourself a true news organization. The headline you used in this story actually had nothing to do with the substance of this story. Tabloid headlines do not become you.

Sara Shamili   November 29th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

I think she was right and honest when she called Hillary a monster. But I am sorry that later she regretted her comment. I guess the reason was that she was forced to state that and then resign. It is good that she is back to Obama administration but if Hillary becomes SoS, then Samantha would be in real trouble because Hillary would get her revenge. Clintons are famous for that. Some dead people can testify for it.

WHY?????????????????????????????

Lisa   November 29th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

My idea of a good (if improbable) outcome would be appointing Hillary Clinton to State and then firing her as soon as her successor had been sworn into the Senate. That way, we in New York would be rid of the carpet-bagger, and the country wouldn't be saddled with her, either. Samantha Powers was 100% on target. Considering the amount of capital this country needs to rebuild in the world, we need a Secretary of State with ethics, judgment and the ability at least to coexist with other children in the sandbox — i.e., the polar opposite of Hillary Clinton.

Lene   November 29th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

With all the hell that GWB has imposed upon this country in the past eight years, this issue is a non-story.

We have Bush's economic disaster to clean up after. Our soldiers are still fighting in the Iraq War close to six years after it began. The defibrilatered VP has been indicted. The list goes on and on and on.

To those who are so narrow minded and voted for the moron, it is going to take years to clean up after him.

So those on the Right, Obama is more than competent. And Hillary can more than take care of herself.

There was a ton of in-fighting in the McCain-Palin campaign, but that was not brought up by the MSM. I pray that Palin Does run in 2012.

Obama has to pick the Clinton administration because he has never run anything except his mouth, let alone a country. The question is which one of these people Obama has chosen is going to run the country. My guess, the Clintons, they know how and Obama doesn't have a clue. Obama will be given a speech to read, because thats all he knows how to do. People have created a man in their minds thats going to fix everything for them and that man does not exist. He sure suckered a lot of people in.

I myself was upset with Clinton at the time on how she was running her campaign. I wished she had not been so negative during the primaries. I did not care who won as long as the other was VP. But, her (extremely) negative campaigning ruined that possiblity. I would have lost some respect for him had he chose her for VP. I am sure alot of his other supporters would have as well. That does not mean I don't think she should play a big role in his administration. I think he would be crazy not to try getting her in a high ranking position. Just like he would be crazy not surrounding himself with the absolute brightest people. We need a true dipolmat in office who will restore our international relationships that Slick Willy worked so hard on, and GW ruined overnight.

Good job President Elect for being able to put your ego aside. It is refreshing to see that this is what we will be getting the next 8 years.

JT from Missouri   November 29th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Do I have to remind people again here that WE NEED TO COME TOGETHER NO MATTER WHAT OUR POLITICAL AFFILIATION IS? For those people who do not know how to stop bashing people just because they disagree politically with you is unacceptable. Whether you are Democrat, Republican, or independent, I want you to read my type written lips, "THIS IS NOT THE RED STATES OF AMERICA OR THE BLUE STATES OF AMERICA, THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" Remember that quote from Obama, and this country will get back on track for sure. For those people who hate other people bashing Bush, I think that personally he is a okay person. It is just that politically he made some unwise choices. I have a personal goal for myself. I will never attack anyone personally no matter how bad of a politician he may be. Anyone who does needs to rethink their tactics. Remember I am only 17 and I have the common sense to say that. I hope their are other people like that as well. God Bless the US.

If it was about holding grudges…HRC would not be considered for SoS. What Power said about Hillary was not worse than what McCain said about Chelsea Clinton in 1998 and yet, HRC still praised McCain more than Obama during the primaries…ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THESE ARE POLITICIANS. And BTW…what makes you think that Power can not defend herself if she ever repeated what she said? But, I honestly, think it is a new day and campaign is over and people are trying to reconcile their differences.

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   November 29th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

If the anti-Obama were paying attention, they would know that the change comes from Obama: He has repeatedly stated that "Change" is his job – his vision and his leadership … not just a "new"face … we need and what Obama is providing is intelligent, experienced people who will follow his lead. Bush picked loyal Bushies: intelligent people need not apply: Brownie was a horse trainer… no wonder why he did such a good job with Katrina!

As for Obama's money: he earned it by writing best selling books: that's more than one book that earned him money when lots and lots of people bought it.

I can't imagine who McCain would be choosing as his cabinet: Lieberman, Lindsay Gramm, Phil (Mr. Deregulation) Gramm with Palin as a VP and Joe the Plumber as the fresh face…

If you are listening, Obama is talking tough times ahead and no instant solutions. Change is how things are going to get done – listen …

I don't know how you run your household budget but I prefer mine to be on the surplus side… So, Irene, do you now understand why we voters elected Obama?

What Samantha Power said about Senator Clinton was not just a slip of the tongue. Her comments were venemous — perhaps the worst I heard throughout the entire 2008 presidential race. I would be interested to know if Senator Clinton has accepted her apology. If not, what is she doing on President-elect Obama's transition team? Her comments show a scary lack of self-discipline.

Jasmine in Germany   November 29th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Peter (CA)   November 29th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

So, is this the first Presidential campaign you guys have seen?
Well, let's look at some facts. #1: They all call each other some pretty awful stuff in order to get the nomination and then they usually come together for party unity. #2: They call each other some pretty awful stuff before the general election and then come together for the "good of the country".
This includes not only the candidates themselves but all of their surrogates also. Note that John McCain hired the very same people who smeared him in 2000 to smear Obama in 2008.
They are all politically minded and most of them probably have personality disorders.
So, sorry folks, no story here.

Excuse me Joe Kiloz

Those of us who follow these blogs know that you were one of the biggest critics of Obama during the campaign.

So don't give us this "Obama remorse" spew. You never supported him. And…stop….the…childish….posting…OK…..?

Eileen   November 29th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Why didn't you people just elect Hillary? Obama is Clinton's third term. God help this country.

Dave   November 29th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Why would Obama have someone like this on his team? Because he has NO idea what he's doing, that's why.

Mark NYC   November 29th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

just shame full… I guess this is what people call change, just sounds like hate crimes to me.

By the way how did Obama make all his money doing public service jobs????
Real tax payers want to know.
I fear this guy more than Bush!!!!!
Very sad,

earle,florida   November 29th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

I'm tired of Harvard, and Yale graduates/alumni pioneering, and engineering this countries domestic, and foreign policies. There postulated acculades, and Doctorates are nothing more than," Recycled Plagiarism" that has plagued former, and past administrations with run-away nepotism. Haven't we thousands of University's,and Colleges in this great country of ours? Unforunately we keep going to the,"same well" for our cool-aid. Mind-Set (PE Obama calls it Group-Think) is a phrase used by MacNamara during JFK's administration referencing the failed,"Bay of Pigs"covert invasion of Cuba (they all thought with-in the box;no independent thinkers) and it was a disastrous failure. Ironically we have alot of high-strung personalities all basically from the," No-Change Clinton Administration on Board" from A-Z with the only "Change " being PE Obama. The bottom line folks, PE Obama is acting more like a dating service administrator, rather than a President? PS, I love personally Princeton & USC……..

I am really disappointed that President Elect Obama would hire this girl back and put her to work with the person she thinks of as a monster.

If he owes her a favor and wants to pay her back then he should place her with Bill Richardson.

This was a dumb move by the Obama team and only makes Obama appear untrustworthy.

Diing in Washington   November 29th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I read her book in 2006 and immediately became a fan. What a profound undertaking by Samantha Power. Respect!

SC   November 29th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Em Hunt,
So, do you want Obama to pick outsider like Palin to make America look funny and stupid around the world? I think Palin alone is more than enough to make SNL funny and to keep American and people around the world entertained. Remember, it's not whom he picks. He can pick the smartest and brightest, who is wiling to follow up and fulfill his agenda. Change comes from his vision and agenda. Not the people he picks. I have nothing against it and don't see anything wrong with it. Period! I think you need to go away and post somewhere on Fox News if they let you do that. Just shut up and be quiet!

Jim   November 29th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Texas Teacher i always enjoy your comments, thank you for explaining things in usually peaceful terms to these brats, its amazing, i mean Linda is it….you have been letting loose for quite some time and whats amazing is you really havent said anything this last year on here, its all just rambling, please bring something to the table when you comment. Anyway, Obama is showing every sign that hes the guy we wanted, im so tired of the comments on here coming from people who probably couldnt tie their own shoes, the way they continue attacking as if the election isnt over, it just goes to show how brainwashed you were lmao. Get with the program is right!! bring history or fact to your points, life isnt cut and dry people. Thats why we didnt vote for the frat ticket. Not to mention about world events, obviously alot of you should read Obamas books to understand where hes coming from, where hes been, and how he would handle it, its not like the information isnt out there, stop being so lazy.

Lets take a real look at what is going on . the "RIGHT" with the whitehoods have already blamed everything on Obama from the stockmarket to people loosing their homes. It's hard to see how anyone with a brain can say anything bad about him as President since he has not even stepped in the Oval office. Who whould you want helping him at this time "JOE THE PLUMMER" or Gov. Palin. is this the change you want .

John   November 29th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Powers actually spoke the truth, just the Clinton fanetics can't admit it. Clinton is all for momentary egoistic spark to excite, to agitate, to arouse exciting intoxication. She is for money and fame. We need to get her out of sight.

Pete Collins   November 29th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

When you're right, you're right! Everything Samantha Power said about Hillary Clinton is true.
Hillary Rodham Clinton actually and openly wished out loud for someone to literally do away with Barack Obama so she could become the nominee. I believe her words were, "…Bobby Kennedy wasn't killed until June, so why should I drop out now?" That was in March, as I recall.
Hillary Clinton is a very nasty person who will say and do anything to further her own ambitions.

MD   November 29th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Ahhh…How everyone seems to know better than Obama!!!

So far Obama has proved himself to be the most intelligent person who has run for presidency in over half a century. He has brought the same surgical precision he ran his campaign with to his transition period. He has tapped the very best in every field. My guess is that he will have the easiest time of all presidents in modern history for confirmations.

Having said that, if Obama thinks that HRC is the right person to be First Diplomat, then I revel in the comfort that Obama knows exactly what he is doing.

I wish people would have given Bush pointers. He sure needed them. Obama doesn't.

Rachel   November 29th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

People kill me. Obama and his advisors tried to ruin Bill and Hillary's reputation in the black community while Obama got away with calling his grandma a typical white person.(imagine if Bill had called someone a typical black person) People just wanted Hillary to be a good little girl and step out of the way and when she didn't the labeled her a monster. Imagiine the audacity of Hillary to keep running until the end of the primaries and wanting all states to have their votes cast and counted I mean really what does she think this is a democracy where there is suppose to be one vote per person and that she has a right to run until the end of the primary. The nerve hun.

Andrew   November 29th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Hilary went almost into republican territory as far as dirty campaigning runs. I believe in Obama though and I will support him. He is going to need it. The right wing hate machine will do anything to discredit him they always put party before country.

Lori   November 29th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Didn't John McCain call Chelsea Clinton 'ugly' at one time? And that is Hillary's child. I know that John McCain lost so how cares what he has to say but why don' t the conservatives focus on that instead?

grahame   November 29th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

OOOOO, She made some disparaging remarks about Hillary Clinton. Any idea that this disqualifies her from being part of the Obama team is just plain stupid. What do you want people? Nice!!!!!!!!……………… or good at the job. And anyway when was politics nice. Not only that but it's true what she said a Hillary stopping at nothing to get what she wants. That just makes her like any other politician. Altruists need not apply for the post.

Rachel   November 29th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I wonder what would happen if Hillary asked Ferraro to come one as part of her state staff. Hillary needs someone looking out for her with all the rabid Obama supporters and advisors salivating at the thought of her failing and them putting her in her place. I think this is a setup. I love the thought of Hillary as SOS but maybe she should stay in the senate and keep her foot on Obama's neck to keep his promises about healthcare. The same people that are screaming for all to be forgotten about the monster comment are the same people who wont forgive Bill for saying fairytale go figure. Hillary watch your back girl I think Obama has his hand raised ready to stick the knife in it.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   November 29th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Believe it and know it!!!

Ken   November 29th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

To all neo-idiots like "Plolicy": after being so dumbfoundingly stupid as to elect G. Bush into office twice, and then to continue to defend him and his rightwing policies even as the unquestionable evidence of his incompetence and failures have mounted over the last 8 years, you can most certainly CHOKE on anything you don't like about President Obama. And count on this: as you choke and gag and provide us with your shrill, ignorant commentary, I will be celebrating your rightwing discomfort greatly……I will certainly be LMFAO at YOU!!!

The utter ignorance and neo-tard delusion coming from ilk like Policy does not bode well for our great country. The stinking rightwing underbelly of America almost destroyed our country, even as they continued to tell us it wasn't their fault. Since there continue to be millions of 'people' who continue to believe that fairytale even in the face of all the evidence against it, it will come as no surprise to me that these same nitwits will go kicking and screaming into the improvement that the Obama adminsitration will bring to our country. I can only laugh at such stupidity…….but as I say, I will go even one-better than laugh, I will celebrate their self-induced discomfort…and I will wonder at God's ability to create quiasi-functional human beings with so few brain cells.

KJL   November 29th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Hillary has been known to behave like a monster. That being said, I think she could be a fine Secretary of State. Samantha Power has impressive credentials, but said something tactless. What's done is done. Now everyone should brush the chips off their shoulders and get to work.

Wanderer   November 29th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Obama has run a different kind of campaign in the U.S. history. The way he ran was more in the righteous way than any other campaigns I knew in my adult life. Probably, some people out there didn’t want to recognize it or couldn’t accept this fact. I am not saying Obma will be a good president, I don’t know, honestly, because he has not officially started his job yet. One thing that I don’t understand is that why many Obama opponents already started criticizing him now. They also seem to already know that Obama will screw the country up. Are they fortuneteller? One thing I know for sure is that he is smarter than many his opponents, he understands what he is doing, and therefore, if he picks Samantha Power, he must have a good reason of why he picks Samantha. This reason must be as good as the one why he wanted Hillary to be in his cabinet.

MO Aviator   November 29th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Every day I look at these boards and am amazed by the stupidity displayed. All anyone ever does is bash bush and demonize Republicans. And anyone that attempts to defend republicans is in turn attacked. What are you clowns going to do when the democrats are in power and bush is gone? Who will you blame for all your problems then? I give it a year before you realize that Obama is not going to just send you checks in the mail and fix all your problems for you. Unfortunately you will still have to go out and get a job like the rest of us. Maybe Obama will do ok. Maybe he won't. Either way I will give him a chance. But I won't celebrate like a moron until I see him actually DO something.

Chico   November 29th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

In my opinion, such hate-filled people as her behavior has indicated should not be in government. Does Obama not realize that the government is for all Americans, whether liked or disliked? Does Obama not think that Hillary will get even after she is the #1 cabinet member? Such infighting within his own administration, already started…Obama is causing this to happen. He is really not full of love for all Americans, after all.

Logically thinking   November 29th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

It seems interesting that Obama would pick a VP who doesn't think he is qualified for the job and now He pick Powers who doesn't believe that a selection made by Obama is wise. What are these people really saying about themselves? What do those comments really mean about our new President? This goes far beyond the system of checks and balances – it speaks directly to this man's competency!
This is a frightful time for our country – we may have plenty of money but our babies will die, our freedoms will be lost and marriage will be distorted which will break down the greatest and strongest fiber this nature has ever had . . . family!

Shannon   November 29th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

wow the haters are out, I'm repeating what Obama said, he said he would do away with don't ask don tell, now he says it's not important He said he would repeal Bush's tax cuts on the wealthy, now he says he won't. He said no lobbyist in his government, he has appointed dozens. I'm sorry the truth hurts. He said no to FISA and than he voted for it, he said yes to Public Financing than he rejected it. He said no drilling, but now will consider it. Perhaps all those things are fine with you, perhaps a pretty speech is enough for you. Me, I want someone who is honest as my leader, not someone who will say or do anything to get elected. I notice people attack personally, but they aren't able to defend the fact that he made promises and now he breaks them. I admit I didn't vote for him, I went third party. Perhaps when he voted to support FISA that was fine with some of you. Me, I want to respect the Constitution. For the gentlemen bragging about how educated he is, well I'm a college educated accountant. You asked what I have done for my country. Well in previous elections, I have worked tirelessly for the Democratic party in my State. What was it again you have did, besides hurl insults that is, short on facts, big on hate. Typical!

MartzMimic   November 29th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

I'll always remember the 2008 race as being the campaign of the thin-skinned. Everytime someone said something bad about an opponent, the opponent demanded that the statement be disavowed. I mean these people want to be the leader of the free world, but throw a fit whenever someone calls them a "monster?"

JT from Missouri   November 29th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Doing this Obama has shown that he meant what he said all those months ago when he started his campaign to now, and that is willing to be bipartisan to anyone and everyone.I find it interesting that people who are criticizing Obama's decisions are the very people who do not want unity for this great country of the United States. Those people are the very people who made this country the way it is now. While I do agree that Bush has been really incompetent in his decisions, he is not the only one to blame for the mess Obama has to deal with now. It is the all the other people of both parties that has been incompetent. I am a 17 year old high schooler from a town just south of Cape Gireaudeu called Jackson. When I resister, I am going to resister as an Independent. Obama is going to govern from the near center. That is a smart move because if you do that you can form a solution for both parties to agree upon and America will be on it's way to becoming better. Lincoln, FDR, and Kennedy did the same thing, and look at the progress our country made under those Presidents. FDR got us out of a depression from using the "center" tactic. Right now we need a president like that who like FDR will get this economy, country, and world back on track. The only way he can do that is for all people Democrat, Republican, and Independent or whatever party you happen to be to come together to help him out. God bless the United States of America.

Ken   November 29th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

@Jesse Callahan — you are one deluded person. Just what has Hillary to apologze for? Well????

Maybe, being from the state that begat G. Bush, you think she needs to apologize for helping to beat the brains out of neo-tard [R]s since the 1990s? Hey bud, you can go ahead and hold your breath on that one.

Bad headline for this story CNN. You are becoming more and more like the National Enquirer with your headlines.

To all the Obama haters…why don't you just relax and give him a chance. He is now your President too…whether or not you like it. BTW, the "change" is going to be his policies that will be implemented by his staff. Sounds like some people think that Obama, in order to represent "change," should put Joe the Plumber and other stupid regular people in his cabinet. I am so happy that Obama is surrounding himself with the best, brightest and most experience people to help get this country back on track. It is also very helpful that the world is thrilled that Obama is our President…maybe now there will be more cooperation between nations.

Lisa   November 29th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Good. Ms. Powers is a very smart person that will bring a lot to the table. I voted for Obama because he said he will bring change to Washington. He is doing just that. He is surrounding himself with the best team of people the World has to offer in the United States. His agenda of Change was really to change the tone in Washington. He has not worked as President yet, but I feel good as an American that something good has happen. We have a President that wants Americans involved in our Country again.

Also, for all the people that say he has not changed anything…Look where you are today, on CNN bloging about the President-Elect and his team, have you every done this before? If No, you are a part of the change Obama was speaking about….We the people being involved in our Government again.

Chris   November 29th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Everyone makes a stupid or emotional comment now and then… relax people. She's highly respected for a number of things… why not judge her on those rather than a stupid comment che made? I'm sure you've done the same…

Russ   November 29th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Free speech is a great thing. Keeping your friends close and your enemies closer also shows great common sense and intellect. It builds a great team of varied opinions and strong personalities. After the last sixteen years of bubbas and cowboys, this turn of events is extremely refreshing. President-elect Obama promised to unite people. He is showing great creativity and style in his methods so far! Best of luck to you, Mr. President-elect!

Debby   November 29th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

I find it hillarious that the Dems/liberals are suppose to be so supportive of their own and the people. They are the worse backstabbing party in the history of politics.

Matt B   November 29th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

"In light of President-Elect Obama's forgiveness of Senator Lieberman for being the Party's Benedict Arnold,"

Hahhaha, Perusing-Through, hopefully you were being sarcastic. If you think he "forgave" Lieberman, you are crazy. He's just smart enough to know that he needs Lieberman to have a chance at that magic number of 60!

On top of that, you are the perfect example of what's wrong with this country. You want your politicians voting for party over principal. The Republicans did that and look where that got us. We need true moderates in office who vote their conscience. We should be thanking Lieberman, not calling him names.

Les   November 29th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

This man is a gift from god.Why people don't let him rest. Obama just trying to do is job.Jesus forgive us, so why cant he forgive those. The truth is,he is not the one who are say those words. We must now try to teach the children of to day, to love one another,in stead of war.Take a look what happen India,It's all young men in their 20's killing people. We have to started to reach out to those youth. Let them know their is some thing out their for them. Look at Africa the low mind people, who are getting these young kids to go and fight for them.this his where these country as to start to make more school eor these young kids, make more trades school for kids,so that they cannot get in the hands of these terrorists. This is what the goverment off all country must do.

Samantha Powers has done nothing wrong. She is extremely smart and probably knows the world better than Hillary Clinton. They both should work together in the State Department to actually do something meaningful for America and the world. I personally believe she is an amazing person, as for those who still complain about her comments she made long time ago, please get a life. Hillary made more crazy comments about Obama than any other candidate.

Karen   November 29th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

To those of you who are so horrified at Obama having the nerve to staff the government with his own choices without having the decency to call and ask your so well informed opinion. Get over yourselves. He won. He can forgive who he wants to, hire who he wants to and then fire who he wants to. I can't figure out what those of you with your nasty and vile comments want more — Obama to fail to prove your own variation of hate or another four years of the just "outstanding" job the current administration has done. Either way you sure seem to want to destroy this country.

Peggy the Unemployed   November 29th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

What Ms. Powers said about Hillary Clinton was hyperbole at its best. Things got said on both sides during the primary that both sides probably regret. I don't think Hillary is a monster, nor did she or her husband lie any more than most politicians. Barack Obama won't be president for almost 2 months and yet people are already second-guessing all of his choices. Give the man a chance.

Aida   November 29th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Phoenix   November 29th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Obama promised change in the way business is done in Washington. It is amazing to me how people are criticizing a man who is not even in office yet. Name another president who has introduced his transition team in the same fashion as Obama. He introduces them to America, and helps us understand how they fit in line with his vision for the country.

Em Hunt obviously your comment has racial undertones using phrases such as bro and sistah. If you believe Obama is that transparent, perhaps President Bush was equally transparent when he used God's name to reclaim the presidency, and used disguised racism to reclaim the presidency. Or perhaps, the blatant racism used by Palin/McCain was also transparent because it is obvious nothing gets past you.

Perusing-Through   November 29th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

IF NO SAMANTHA POWERS, , , THEN NO HILLARY CLINTON

I can't remember the exact wording, but to paraphrase Ronald Reagan, "Thou shall not attack, trample, or destroy fellow party members; especially at the behest of the opponent party". First it was Hillary then it was Lieberman that broke the party commandments. Hillary did it when she publicly stated she and " . . .McCain (a Republican) had the credentials to lead the nation and all President-Elect Obama had is a speech from 2004″.

Yet Obama has saw fit to include Hillary in the nation's highest cabinet office as Secretary of State. If Hillary's "skunk-spitting, kitchen sink attacks" can be forgiven, then Samantha Powers comments is a non-starter. Time to move on!

Al   November 29th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

"Alongside her advocacy for Barack Obama's candidacy, Power is best known for her efforts to increase awareness with regard to genocide and human rights abuses, particularly the Darfur conflict. In 2006, she contributed to Screamers, a movie about the Darfur, Armenian, and other genocides of the 20th and 21st centuries."

What a horrible person! Why would Obama want someone like this on his team? He needs more people in his cabinet to increase awareness of the plight of poor rich people who will suffer as a result of a small increase in their taxes.

I find it funny that the neo cons in here who have called Hillary worst names than a monster have the nerve to come in here and hate on Power for what she said.

So what? she called Hillary a monster…..waaaah, shut up!

She said nothing sexist, or call her anything profane, and she stepped down from the campaign for it. Obama wanted to have a positive campaign; Power understood that, and she did what she had to do to save face.

Good Obama brought her back; she said nothing wrong in the first place

Gazing into the fishbowl   November 29th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Perhaps it would be best for Senator Clinton to remain in the Senate, and bide her time. More and more it seems the appointment to Secretary of State is not one of respect, but one of control on the part of Obama's team. Although I think she would be superb in the role, it may not be in her best interest politically to accept the job.

Al, California   November 29th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Good to have there a highly intelligent honest person. And, again, somebody who really knows Hillary.

Maggie Muggins   November 29th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Reading these blogs about an article with little or no relevance to what is going on in America and the world today and GOP trolls jump all over it just to spew hate against their in coming President.

I would suggest all those who are intent on degrading Obama before he even takes office take stock of where the U.S. ranks today in relation to the other countries in the world on all major items.

Once you do the research and see the U.S. ranks either just above or in some areas below third world countries then maybe you will realize the problems you are facing and the need to get over the petty politics that seems to be driving these comments.

The fact is George Bush and the Republican party have taken you to the point you are at right now and believe me it's nothing to be proud of no matter what your poltics.

Clinton WAS acting like a monster. Politics made Power apologize but truth made her right. I'm personally glad to have someone who could speak the truth in a game of half-truths and having Clinton as Secretary of State is probably also part of the political game that no man or woman can escape.

Willy Brown   November 29th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

She was not kidding. Obama picking all old Clinton re treads has released the monster on America again starting 20 Jan 2009

arlene, CA   November 29th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

I welcome her back. I like all of Obama's picks except Hillary Clinton for SOS. She is a proven liar with no credability. Remarks about landing in Bosina under sniper fire, that is a seriously disturbing lie for a S0S to make plus exaggerating all of her so called foreign policy experience. She tried everything possible to destroy Obama in the primary, so I don't see how anything Powers said can be held against her. She does speak the truth. I do hope she gets approved for this spot.

toyin isijola   November 29th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Change has come to America. Unfortunately for some of us, Samantha is part of that change. I hope the best for Obama but it seems more and more like he's George Bush 3.0.

Perusing-Through   November 29th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

WHY IS THIS AN ISSUE? WHY IS THIS A SURPRISE?

In light of President-Elect Obama's forgiveness of Senator Lieberman for being the Party's Benedict Arnold, an act of forgiveness by Obama that "chilled the heels" of those who were rightfully ready to "politically lynch" Lieberman for his disgusting & disparaging remarks; – - – - – - I would say Samantha Power's return to the "Good Ship Obama" is both a heartwarming and welcomed addition to the transition efforts. Any other view of her return is a non-starter.

Go OBAMA-BIDEN!!! Let's get this party started!!

David   November 29th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

I didn't want her to exit the campaign after saying about Hillary what we were all thinking. I'm glad to see she's back. I wish she would have a larger role than the one she's playing.

Sam Powers is brilliant and I'm glad to hear that she is back.

Her words describing Obama's opponent were, strictly speaking, off the record and harsh, but not necessarily untrue.

She can be a significant contributor, and I actually would like to see her with a more significant role.

So far, he has not announced any change except to support prisoner saggy pants (LOL), stepped out of his chicago mansion and pretend he cares for the poor bro and sistah by giving out (not a single cent donation from him) meals during thanksgiving. He filled up his cabinet with old "bailouters" for rip off wall street.

Still upset with MO   November 29th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Let's see. Pulitzer prize, Top 100 thinker. Yeah, good call. Obama is putting the best people on his team regardless of ideology. That is what he promised to do. He has the strictest policies re: lobbyists. There is no way he could put together a strong team without former Clinton people or former lobbyists. True, Power said some stupid (yet true) things. However, she and the Obama campaign are so smart, I would not be surprised if that was a planned way of getting that statement out in public. Now, she is getting her reward for being the fall guy. That's politics folks. Regardless, she is still infinitely qualified.

To Shannon: Don't ask, Don't tell will be repealed, period. Obama has a team of former military lined up to take it down. Now is not the time. Obama realizes that ~70% of Americans named the economic crisis as their biggest concern and he is taking that on head first. The rest, including repealing the Bush tax cuts for the rich, will come sooner rather than later, just not in January. Those tax increases are a tool to reduce the deficit, not build the economy. Once the economy is back on track, you'll see those rates go back up, as promised.

Jessica   November 29th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

@ everybody hating on Shannon

Her opinion was valid. Obama has changed positions, maybe on things that are important to some people, maybe on things that aren't so important to others. He did promise to filibuster FISA and then turned right around a voted for it. I believe The Nation was quite upset about that change.

Not everyone who dislikes Obama is a racisit, just like not everyone who dislikes Clinton is sexist. It's the people who attack others with such spite that promote hate.

Monsters Clinton and Obama combined, it is the same same old Democratic party's policyt with big spending, big well-fare system, higher taxes for the those who work hard, and less traditional moral family values and less freedom for the American people. Bush did not sell his soul, but Obama did even though he claims to be a Christian, but the Muslims and pagans and liberals no better. What is in it for you, if you gain the whole world, fame and power, but lose your own soul, eternally??

Thisw is fantastic .There is sense that every one has to grow beyond themselves for a inch at least if they wont to be in Obama administration. So it could be first test for MS Clinton- she can do it or she can not. It is right time to be sure since she will be asked for many compromises, as everybody else . Only problem could be that she is n ot realy ready for that part and therefore ready for creating drama on every step.Obama got over Bidens coments, Clinton's, Mc Insane's Pailin's……you name it , so his closest colegues should be able to do it as well.

Further more, who care, Obama and Clinton said things they should not have during that campaign and they know it. If Obama can forgive, or at least pardon Lieberman this woman who has no real power can work for the transition team until January. Everyone on both sides need to chill out! Wait for the man to do something wrong that actually affects the country, (and he will) but could we PLEASE WAIT until then to launch unreasonable criticisms.

I pity your small-mindness and that of people such as yourself who would rather hold grudges and overlook the talents that all of these people bring to the table. Obama has forgiven Joe Lieberman who betrayed him and the Democratic party, and lied about him repeatedly. He has chosen to forgive Clinton, who also chose the low road in campaigning against him.

He is interested in the raw talents and experience that all of these people bring to the table. He does not hold grudges, and if Clinton was offended, she should not hold grudges either because she did and said worst things against Obama… and he forgave her. Put aside your pettiness and anger, Shannon. Try forgiveness, and put the nation first! This is far more than Bush ever did!!!

Who amongst us has not opened their mouth before their brain was in gear? Maybe more should be expected of those in the public eye, but they are also human and sometimes impulsive and irrational. I imagine she regretted the words the second they left her mouth. The heat of a campaign often portrays people at less than their best. If she has something to contribute to the Obama administration, then let sleeoing dogs lie.

jeff   November 29th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

It shows Obama has a lack of respect for Hillary by bringing this woman back.
Hillary should stay inthe senate and watch Obama be a one term president and she will be able to say to her party.
I told you so.

Rumsfeld   November 29th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Consequences of words, campaigns and behaviors. Awkward to say the least.

Ed Barczak   November 29th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

In the heat of battle, oft times, things that are said, are said without
thinking, I believe this is one of them. She has apologized, if personally to Sen Clinton, all the better; so, I believe all is forgiven along with time heals all. The ironic thing is that she is working to help with the transition of the State Dept. I am sure that all the people helping with State's transition are cleared with Sen Clinton; and she will do a good job.

HoldenLitgo   November 29th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

To Shannon, who calls Obama a liar after stating you think the wealthiest are "among us." Could you be any further detached from reality believing both those things in the same mind? The man's not even in office yet and he's a failure to you people. At least you gave Bush a few years to realize – if you ever did – that he's an utter failure.

JT   November 29th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

Stop crying Shannon, this man has not got into office yet and everybody wants to be a critic. Let him get in office first and see what he does. You never know, Clinton and Powers probably made peace before he put her on his transition team.

36 Year Old White Woman   November 29th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

To 60 year old white female: I see your comments here often, and I am just wondering: Have you erected a shrine to Obama yet? Do you worship at his feet?It is obvious that you worship him. I, for one, worship no human.Every human being has imperfections, which is why they are human. You, however, are blinded by what you see in Obama. As for Samantha Power, the fact that everyone remembers and still comments on what she said is proof positive of how disgusting her comment was. My only hope is that Hillary Clinton will be her boss if Power works at state. She will then see without fail that Hillary is no monster and willing to forgive. This move is not a reflection of Obama, it is a reflection of Clinton. But, of course, people like 60 year old white female who are blinded by their image of Obama will see a reflection of the power of Obama's forgiveness. What did he have to forgive? Nothing. Hillary is the one to forgive. See the facts.

susie   November 29th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Obama kept her on the back burner all this time. Hillary is a fool if she takes the job.

Marge   November 29th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Think she was looking in a mirror. Most people who rant and rave are jealous of the one they rant about. She must be also. And by the way if obama is as honest and pure as he says he is she has no place in his administration.

Jay   November 29th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

SHannon,

Obviosuly you are a disgruntled republican. First off, Obama did NOT go back on Don't ask Don't Tell (Obviously you are getting your facts from Fixed Noise AKA Fox News) As a matter of fact just about everything your comment said was not the truth.. Truthfully, Obama has said change starts with HIM not with his cabinet. HE is the president not Samatha Powers…. Perhaps you need to get over the fact that McCain and Caribou Barbie lost!!

Dee   November 29th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

I am disappointed that Obama is bringing back someone so tactless to be part of the transition team for State Department. The State Department requires people with diplomacy, a quality Samantha Power – whoever she is – is obviously lacking.

James From Chicago   November 29th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

I am truly sorry I voted for Obama. If I were Hillary I would put her
through a wall. Shame on Obama to even think of putting this nut
on his team. Alot of people I have been talking to are regretting
their vote for Obama. The only intelligent thing he did was
put Clinton as Secy of State.

Bobby Wilson   November 29th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

"Time Magazine labeled her one of America's top 100 scientists and thinkers".
What was she thinking when she made the "monster' statement. Must have not been top thinking that day. Harvard Grad and Professor?
Intelligence ignorance, I would say.

pamelagray   November 29th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

I was shocked to see senator announcing on the news when Obamas starts is Presidentcy in January.I been working so hard for no money. But I happy for him to take over I pray the economy will get better I have alot credit bills I have to subsidized soon.

nicole   November 29th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Honestly, now is not the time for petty arguments. We have a country to save.

Don Kadlec   November 29th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Stepping down was obviously the right thing for Power to do at the time; but on the other hand, does anyone remember the name of the Fox anchorwoman who labeled Barack and Michelle Obama's playful little on-stage gesture as, and I quote, a "terrorist fist-bump"? I do not recall any outrage, nor do I recall anyone resigning over that statement.. And to refer to a candidate for the highest office in this nation as a "terroris"t on national television is absolutely reprehensible.. Welcome back, Ms. Power.

chuck   November 29th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Sean P. Seattle, WA   November 29th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

sorry typo that should say they wouldn't KNOW a qualified person for the job if it bit them in their A$$

Joe Fox   November 29th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

To Texas teacher. Amen

Sean P. Seattle, WA   November 29th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Hmm no "some change" or "Clinton third term remark by the Gone Out Party (GOP) membersor the democrat step children PUMA haha…but the last part says it best Powers is a Harvard University Professor and Considered ONE OF AMERICA'S TOP SCIENTISTS and THINKERS…My god how wonderful it is to look forward to having a Qualified President and QUALIFIED Cabinet members all working together.

Get used to it GOP, these are People Who Know what they are doing and they are back in control…but you'll find Something to gripe about…will it be the economy that has been fixed by obama? The great healthcare we all have? Or the fact that new and innovative Jobs are making America a world leader in time to come? Or perhaps that Internationally we will be seen by 99.999% of the world as the model of Democracy we should ALWAYS be?

HAHA, leave it to Republicans to Complain about having the job done right? But then again who can blame them they wouldn't not a qualified person doing a job if it came up and bit them in their A$$!

Qualified People>The Bush/Republican Yes Man War Criminal Society.

Necie   November 29th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

So??

johnrj08   November 29th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

This is disappointing to read. This kind of remark is no better than what Palin said during the campaign. Just ugly, divisive rhetoric, that doesn't even qualify as legitimate criticism. She shouldn't have been allowed back on the transition team, no matter how "smart" she may be. I'm no fan of Hilliary, but now is no time for this kind of petty crap.

Simmy   November 29th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Redeemed! She should never have left! Blessings to you!

Barbara   November 29th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Why would they bring this person back? Is the change we want?

John Foff   November 29th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

I think you have completely missed the boat on this one. What about her comments on ow Obama will not rely on campaign promises to determine his Foriegn policy when it comes to Iraq and the withdrawal of troops? It is amazing that Obama was portrayed as a candidate of change, yet we are seeing time and again that what he said is not what he is going to do. He is following the same policies that Clinton and McCain said on the campaign trail, and not the ones he was saying. The media really did an unjustice to the US people in there drive for the President they wanted. Imagine if McCain won and he hired Phil Gramm to head his economic team, how hard would you be trying to rip apart McCain's credibility. Instead of going after the real issue here you have left the door open for a great photo op where Clinton can say she is forgives Powers for her comments and that campaigns can be ugly at moments and people can misspeak.

robert   November 29th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

its called forgiveness should bill richardson hate carville for a statement methinks no. should obama not heed advice from bush despite the bashing… should blacks hate bill clinton… no no there is something called forgiveness. sara palin can work in an obama administration its called forgiveness folks…

Antonio Beasley from Kentucky   November 29th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter, but I can't wait to see how this works. lol, it could be made for TV material. But, no matter what, the bottom line is she is part of the transition team. Hillary will be the head of her Secretary of State Dept. She may not allow Ms. Powers to be on her staff after the transition. And if she does, no matter what, she will be the boss.

Texas Teacher   November 29th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Lizbobb…………. Powers is NOTHING compared to Palin when it comes to UNDIPLOMATIC…. or even CLOSE when it comes to LACK of intelligence! She may have errored in her judgement with the comment, but after listening to the attacks from all sides on Obama… perhaps she did misspeak from pure disgust!

But there is NO DOUBT that she does NOT hold a candle to the Republican/McCain/Palin's long term viciousness that has still be unrefuted by that camp!

Get over it…. Seriously! YOU LOST…. suck it up! :)

Democrat in ARIZONA   November 29th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Well that was nothing compared to how Hillary threw the kitchen sink at Obama. Sam power is I am sure a hard worker and definitly needed. Welcome back Ms. Power.

celine   November 29th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Powers' excuse was that she was too drunk–on obama koolaid…

Clinton is the best choice the newbie will be making. Funny, how he dismissed her experience when he was running, and now he will have to depend on it and her star power around the world…

RufusVonDufus   November 29th, 2008 11:59 am ET

It won't be long before the Rev. Wright is back on Obama's team as the person in charge of being critical of the U.S.A.

Gonzo in Houston   November 29th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Hillary is not as thin-skinned as some of her supporters. If Powers keeps her foot out of her mouth, works her tail off and gets results, all will be forgiven and Powers will have a useful spot in the administration.

If Obama can accept Hillary in his cabinet, Hillary can accept Powers on the transition team.

Tony, Enterprise, Alabama   November 29th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Is the Obama transition team still playing high school games?

How petty and small of them to bring this woman back when they seemed to have risen above such child's play.

Hillary Clinton is still better than Barack Obama and all the tiny little men and women that are working for him.

I hope she becomes Secretary of State, we need some grown-ups in the government.

Texas Teacher   November 29th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Wanderer, I, for one, am sick of Politics as usual! Barack Obama ran a different kind of campaign than the status quo. And it probably got him elected! He has proven that you NOT have to attack, lie, and defame your opposition to win an election!

I can see where this new kind of President is going to be hard for some of you status quo folks to follow until you get used to him! I say, buckle your seat belts and get ready for the ride!

You lost….. Seriously…. GET OVER IT! :)

Sharon - Irondale, Alabama   November 29th, 2008 11:55 am ET

The primary is over. That was in the past. Time to get down to serious business with brilliant serious-minded people.

catmom   November 29th, 2008 11:55 am ET

And, a lot of these comments are probably coming from people who think Sarah Palin is intelligent enough to run the country. Will you people stop whining about what Obama is doing. How about you ask Bush to accept responsibility for what he has done to this country since you all want to find something, anything to complain about.

Daniel Wagle   November 29th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Let bygones be bygones. Powers stated what she stated in the heat of the campaign and Hillary stated what she did about sniper fire in the exhaustion of her own campaign. Both Powers and Hillary will be valuable members of the new administration.

paul   November 29th, 2008 11:54 am ET

BE A MAN OF YOUR WORD, Mr OBAMA. Ms. POWERS HAS NO PLACE IN YOUR ADMINISTRATION. Out of 300 million people in the population there has to be someone else with the same type of credentials and with A LOT LESS MEAN SPIRITED AND DEVISIVE rhetoric then MS Powers.

MAKE THE CHANGE YOU PROMISED.

zgomer   November 29th, 2008 11:53 am ET

Why apoligize for something that is true and we already knew about the Clitons! This young lady knew first hand what a witch she is, so know we will see the vengeful witch Cliton get her fired this time, Obuma sure isn't to smart is he you libatards.

Fred NH   November 29th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Another exmaple of O's approach to getting the nation's top thinkers thinking for him, regardless of some questionable past issues.
Getting the best and brightest people and giving them reign to think out loud will be O's hallmark. We will all need open minds to accept new ideas and, united in cause, put down those who will naturally oppose these changes.

FAYE, NV   November 29th, 2008 11:47 am ET

There were a number of comments made back when, now it is time to work together and bury the hatchet. Congrat to Ms Power and President elect Obama would not have hired either if they were not able to do the job.

Al   November 29th, 2008 11:47 am ET

It was obvious that she would be back; she represents part of Obama's power hungry "pc" crowd — they are disgusting because they are so self righteous. Powers is not a good team player and it makes Obama look, once again, like a politician who does what it takes to get elected but behind closed doors or after the polls close, anything goes. it is also bad form to have her around if Hillary is SOS; Powers tried to damage Clinton's campaign. Really — she isn't all that good.

But for record — we will soon see his minister back in the fold. I give him six months on that, give or take.

Shannon   November 29th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Another example of this man not meaning a word of what he says. He knew he was going to bring her back, so much for hope and change. What a joke this man is, and the poor pathetic people who supported him too. In a few weeks he's gone back on his word about don't ask don't tell, hiring lobbyist and most importantly, he is now not going to repeal the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest among us. He is a liar!

lizbobb   November 29th, 2008 11:46 am ET

While probably a true authority on genocide, Ms. Powers was the most undiplomatic figure in the entire 2008 campaign. Her role ina state department transition is very misplaced.

Shrimp Barnicles, NJ   November 29th, 2008 11:44 am ET

The first medicine to administer to a gaffe is a quick acknowledgment and an apology. Powers did just that and look where she is.

California Gold   November 29th, 2008 11:44 am ET

True it was imappropriate for her to discuss her opinions about a rival candidate when she was on another candidate's team. True Clinton was acting like a "monster" and someone who "is stooping to anything." Clinton lied through her teeth exaggerating her experience as First Lady, e.g. running across the tarmack in a hail of bullets and dimissed reports to the contrary until confronted with video and still images. Pictures don't lie, but Hillary kept on. Indeed that does qualify as "stooping to anything" to give herself an "edge" and added to her fictional accounts. In the end Clinton cost herself her nomination.

dejah thoris   November 29th, 2008 11:44 am ET

She either lied when she called Clinton a monster or she lied when she apologized and said she admired Clinton. Why is a liar being allowed anywhere near the White House?

FreeNLovIt   November 29th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Ah the beauty of being able to forgive :) That's America.

Dorothy in NC   November 29th, 2008 11:40 am ET

If Powers is one of America's top thinkers, perhaps she should think before she talks.

GuyinIowa   November 29th, 2008 11:38 am ET

"great thinker"? Umm.. obviously she isn't too smart.

Ken   November 29th, 2008 11:38 am ET

…and THANK GOODNESS! Her mind and perspective will benefit our country greatly over the next four years! And if making insulting comments precluded people from serving in public office, then NO ONE would be able to serve there.

Ruth in Arizona   November 29th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Maybe she should stay in schoo l. She is to full of herself. When you start pointing fingers at others you will always find that there are more that one finger pointing at you.

Texas Teacher   November 29th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Oh, my…. Did she ever! *LOL* If you choose one, please let it be the corrected version. :)

Corrected Version:

Oh, my… and tut, tut….. After all the crap the McSame and McBarbie came engaged in, Ms. Powers is criticized for stepping over the line….. THEN apologizing AND resigning!

Pray tell, WHEN will we hear an Apology for the ugly inflammatory language that came from the McCain Camp? As I recall, Sen. McCain gave one limp wristed back step to the mud slinging at ONE of his campaign stops…. maybe EVEN two when he raised his hands and said, "No, No, none of that!", but he NEVER put a muzzle on HIS pit bull dog, Palin. Even recently he praised her for her part in the campaign and her political future!

You can BET that Obama DID reign in Ms. Powers! And it was done quietly without a big fuss, because it was not just a ploy to gain more press…. but a sign of how Obama handles things!

We have done well electing Barack Obama for President! And time will prove me correct! :)

So get over it, Repubs…… Seriously…. YOU LOST! Suck it up, and let's get on with it! :)

Wanderer   November 29th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Samantha Power did tell the truth, could have told the truth, might have told the truth, or revealed at least half of the truth. For all politicians, this is not news at all. If we pay our attention to politics, we all knew it, too. Samantha was a politician. Therefore, she knew it better. It was not necessary for her to issue an apology.
She did what all politicians have been doing.

Are you kidding me? In the Obama transition team on foreign policy? Hillary Clinton slated to be the next Secretary of State? This is remarkable idiocy on somebody's part. Either Hillary is out or this is a way for Obama to neutralize the effectiveness of Hillary. Either option seems exceedingly divisive at this time. Or maybe Hillary has a big forgiving heart and so does Obama. What do I know?

Larry C   November 29th, 2008 11:29 am ET

I don't think she would be good in the Obama administration, for any position, because of what her comments were, in the past. She is much more educated than that, to be making such crude remarks, especially if she is not going to get along with the Secretary of State,
Hillary, which is probably the most intelligent individual for that position. We will start gaining respect throughout the world, get along with other countries, and make the world a much safer / better place,
after Senator Clinton has been in this position for about a year, or so.

The final paragraph outlines her qualifications; she will provide an excellent balance to the rest of the team.

If Obama can overlook Leiberman's, Clinton's and McCain's comments during the campaign, Powers off air comments should not seen as a problem. Time to move on with the best minds available.

Ray Fisher   November 29th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Free speech is the centerpiece of democracy yet only if others approve of wht is said, apparently. Somehow, we must stop trying to be offended by everything and simply let free speech actually be free. Has everyone forgotten the old "Sticks and Stones" ditty???

Me thinks Ms. Powers speaketh the truth. Lady Hillary doth bear watching.
