Sources say President-elect Obama will nominate Sen. Clinton as his secretary of state.

(CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama will officially nominate members of his national security team at an event Monday morning, including Sen. Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, according to two officials.

The Obama transition team announced Sunday that Obama will unveil the full team at a press conference at the Chicago Hilton around 10 a.m. ET.

CNN and CNN.com will carry the event live.

The officials said Obama is also expected to finally confirm that he is keeping Defense Secretary Robert Gates in his current post, and plans to name retired Marine Gen. Jim Jones as his National Security Adviser at the White House.

Also, two sources close to the transition said Obama will nominate Susan Rice as United Nations ambassador, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as Homeland Security secretary and Eric Holder as Attorney General.

I am so excited for Hilary and for Bill and for the Obama Administration.
Obama will get 2 for the price of one (Bill and Hillary!).
Whether you like the Clintons or not, people abroad do and those are the ones we need to impress.
KUDOS to Hillary!!!

I think the name Clinton does more good than harm globally and I am excited to see them work together. Hopefully, like the mild effect that the announcement of the economic team had on the financial world, this announcement will have a positive effect on the global state of affairs. One can hope.

Good. They'll all be in one spot for the next 4 years. Easier to keep an eye on them while they keep an eye on each other. Of course it will be easy for them. Most lizards can look behind without turning their heads.

Hillary is a loser....   November 30th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

How can she run the State Dept. when she couldn't even run her own campaign?

She hired her friends rather than real pros and blew a 25 point lead she had over Obama. Then she left her campaign $ 20 million in debt.

Is this how we want our State Dept. run?

Joyce in Florida   November 30th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Wise choices for his cabinet. Glad to see that President-Elect Obama is already setting things in place to start from Day One. He will have great minds behind his decisions. Time to get to work and clean up the mess the Republican Administration has made. It will really take some time fixing but I am confident it will get done. Proud to be a Democrat!!!

Good for you barak, and hilary all the best, you sure deserve it.

Her only experience is standing next to Bill Clinton and greeting foreign dignitaries and their spouses. She did nothing for New York other than get elected due to presidential pardons on the last day in a state she was not a resident in. Her only accomplishment in the past 8 years is a failed run for president.

America we have a right as to the say of who is the person who represents us to the rest of the world. Hillary Clinton should not be that person for thousands of reasons. She and her husband bring too much baggage to America for just a couple of "civilians in public service".

The Secretary of State is not a job for lightweights with minimal experience and are only recieving the position for once again political favors.

Demand more from this president elect. Demand real Change. Not political favors. Thats the same not change.

I cannot wait to see Hillary's cheesy smile. I am happy for her. I read in another article that Barack made it clear that she will be able to chose her own staff for the State Dept and will hae direct access to him. Also, kudos to President Clinton for the sacrafices he made to allow his wife to be Secretary Of State.

Gerry   November 30th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

The world remains a dangerous place, as evidenced by the terrorist attacks in India last week. President-elect Obama has made some good choices for his national security team. Among them is Senator Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State. My feeling is that this one appointment could be the most important master stroke of the entire first year of the Obama Administration, provided that it works for all involved. I would have like to been a fly on the wall when Senator Clinton discussed her appointment with President Clinton, that would have been an interesting and revealing conversation. President-elect Obama and the Senator are pros in the field of image making and message sending. My feeling is that this appointment is going to work well because both the President-elect and the Senator want it to.

C. E. Pringle   November 30th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

While I don't want Democrats to lose a Senator with Sen. Clinton's skills, she will certainly be an outstanding Secretary of State. People who ridicule her foreign policy experience haven't bothered to study her public service record. She's capable, focused, and dedicated to serving this country and promoting the general welfare of the nation for future generations. President -elect Obama is organizing an incredible team with a nice mix of experience and fresh ideas. The task before him is daunting but his leadership skills are impressive. I'm hopeful.

sandee in Portland   November 30th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

I am so disappointed in his choice of Hillary for Secretary of State. The Clinton family has been in politics far too long. When people make a career out of being politicians is when they forget the reason they went into politics and begin looking out only for their own best interests, not our country's. I truly believe there should be term limits for every political office.

Jim in Asheville   November 30th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

I'm trying to figure out what Senator Clinton's qualifications are for this position. I understand choosing General Jones with his thirty plus years as a Marine and as the former commander of NATO. Robert Gates was a CIA director and is the current defense secretary. What about Hillary Clinton? New York senator and former stay-at-home mom (okay, she did work at a shady law firm for a short while). A strange choice and one that may cause America problems later. What about an experienced Foreign Service veteran or someone with a heavy academic resume–or both? How about a less political and power hungry choice?

A Sousley   November 30th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

The only ones I hear yelling about change are the MSM and the Republicans. I voted for Obama and I am fine with who he has picked so far.

I know where the change comes from. He is the one who sets the tone and the policy. He is the one that will collect the information and then decide which course the country will be set on. That's how it will be. So, that's where the change will begin.

Give it a rest people. Give him a chance to get his cabinet together and get into office. Then if things aren't right, we can yell then. But at least let him get in the door before we start yelling.

chuck   November 30th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Clint   November 30th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

For a number of reason it is disappointing to see the possible inclusion of Senator Clinton in the Obama administration. First reason for disappointment is said in her own words during the campaign for the Democratic presidential nominee: landing under fire during a friendly European trip with her daughter. This was not the truth as we have all since learned. What country in the world will not have some concern about her integrity?

The many scandals involving the Clintons that speak boldly and loudly for themselves. The bare knuckle anything goes politics employed by the Clintons may make any country, at least initially, intransigent in their position(s) regarding international alliances and policy.

During President Clinton's presidency he made some lasting good decisions, and some bad. Nobody is perfect, so mistakes are expected from any human being. But their tactics and long list of scandals and questionable dealings can only make one think that they must live in the biggest and best trailer in the trailer park on the south end of town.

There are valid reason why President-elect Obama would choose Senator Clinton as Secretary of State. But at least for me they do not out weigh the reasons I voted for him to be our president and our agent of government and political reform.

I'm watching "After the Party" with the Conservative commentators who are claiming that Obama is just doing the "same old, same old" with his nominees, both Democratic and Republican; I beg to differ. He is NOT basing his choices on ideological stands but on the expertise and abilities of the people, regardless of party affiliation. Get over it! Obama is doing exactly what he said he would do — he's getting the BEST, regardless of affiliation!!

In movie, "The Remains of the Day", American Lewis said something that fits today very well. He asked all the famous lords and princes at Lord Darlington's mansion, "Can we afford to have amateurs handling such international crisis as Nazi's uprising? We desperately need professionals." Of course, his question was ignored. I don't think we are living in a much safer world than just before WWII. We should ask ourselves the same question. Can we afford an amateur as our top diplomat?

Launching Hillary at the world
Nov 18th 2008
From Economist.com

The surprising idea that Hillary Clinton could become Barack Obama's secretary of state

"But if he gives the job to Mrs Clinton, he would be ceding a large measure of influence over the reconstruction of America's reputation abroad to a former, and perhaps even future, rival who he could find hard to control. “Never appoint someone you can't sack”, commented one old hand this week: and Mrs Clinton would be almost unsackable, thanks to her huge popularity among a large section of the Democratic Party and the status as an ex-president of her husband.

Her appointment would also marginalise Mr Obama's vice-president, Joe Biden, who, as the outgoing head of the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee, had been expected to play a big role in foreign policy. A secretary of state of somewhat less personal political stature, a Bill Richardson, perhaps, or even a Republican such as Richard Lugar, would have allowed the new president to maintain the primacy of his White House over foreign affairs. It is all too easy to imagine Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton disagreeing messily. Bill Clinton's complex web of business dealings (he has raised large sums of money from foreign companies and governments, both as a speaker and in order to fund his foundation) is also a potential complication."

Can we afford an amateur not long after Russian invasion of Georgia?

Annie, Atlanta   November 30th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Although I am a Hillary Clinton fan and her and Bill are both recognized and respected worldwide, I never understood naming a woman as SOS. As much as I hate it, there are places in the Arab world where women can be murdered by male family members for doing something as simple as talking to a guy who is not family. How effective is a woman SOS in these places, how effective was Ms. Rice, and would it not be considered an insult to send a woman there to represent us in the first place? Like I said, I hate it, but it's a sad reality in our world, even today.

Sara from Arizona   November 30th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I think all the right choices are being made. I only hope that Bill Clinton doesn't "screw" Hillary with his organization and its donations. It's time for Hillary to be in the lime light. It would also reflect badly on Obama-Biden if Hillary had "issues" caused by Bill.

Sara   November 30th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

It is just great that Republicans are so pleased with Obama's selection of his cabinet. It proves beyond doubt that Democrat's favour candidate trunrs out to be so close to Republicans that you might think that McCain could have also appointed the same persons. Forget about any change in policy either.

Milhouse van Houten   November 30th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

The next while should be interesting times. It will be a feather in the cap of the new administation if all the factions can work together.

Lauren   November 30th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Well, it looks liek the change this country voted for is INDEED going to happen. We are changing from the Bush administration, to pretty much the same as we had back when Clinton was in office. Maybe not all the faces, but the same points of view will carry on.

Putting Hillary as SOS is perfect. There has never been a SOS run against the stnading president. So put Hillary where if history dictates anything, she will not run against Obama in 2012. Exactly what Obama wants.

So tell me, where is this change Obama preached?????

There is already talk of him backing off of the majority of his promises.

MEDIA CONTINUES TO FALSELY SLAM CLINTONS ! ! !…..

What cowardice ! ! !….. What stupidity ! ! ! …..What blatant partisanship ! ! !…..

All they have on the Clintons is an extra-marital affair between two adults which if truth be told represents fifty per cent of ALL U.S. Marriage problems ! ! !…..

Funny… but no mention in the media is made about the criminality, corruption and suspicions of wrong doing by the Bush family for one ! ! !…..

One Bush relative was an executive in the air line insurance industry at the time of 9/11 and as soon as Bush promised to bail out the airlines he resigned
quietly ! ! !…..

Another Bush relative became a board member of a company doing business
with the Defense Department whose sales tripled and when bought out by another company this Bush relative received one million seven hundred thousand dollars ! ! !……

One Bush brother went to jail in the savings and loan collapse the other brother,
a former Florida governeor, excaped prosecution because his partner in crime
wanted by the Justice Department fled to South America ! ! !…..

Why doesn't the media keep bringing up these really serious and provable events, crimes and suspicions like they due interminably about the Clintons…

…anyone ? ? ?…..

Hillary--Don't Run the State Dept. like you ran your campaign   November 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

I am so disheartened by this choice for Secretary of State. President-Elect Obama should not have to make any concessions or conciliatory gestures toward Hillary Clinton. She comes with her own baggage and that of her husband.

Well, onward and upward. However, I hope this doesn't come back to bite him when she peels off like an onion skin to jockey for favor and position in a 2012 run for the presidency. I didn't vote for her in the primaries and I won't ever vote for her for anything. She's a pit viper and she won't be able to shield her true nature during her tenure in the Obama presidency.

Looking forward to Monday to know who Obama's security team will be, it looks as if he has a good team so far from what we've seen.
All we need now is Jan 20th to come so he can get all his team working to get this country back on track again….I doubt all his choices will please a lot of people, but as long as they work for the country that's all I'm concerned about.
I do think the country will see a definite change once Obama has free rein to implement his plans…..will it be quick and easy, I don't think so but I am prepared to give him a chance and I hope those who didn't vote for him will do the same.

If Senator Clinton wants to abandon her constituents in New York to join the administration then let her leave. It does not make any difference whether Hillary has been a senator from New York or not. She has been preaching the health care reform during her campaign but failed to reform the health care in the state of New York (her own backyard). Clinton overpromised but never delivered. Senator Clinton has obligations, commitments and responsibilities before her constituents. When you start doing something you finish it before starting something else. By accepting the position, Hillary was being selfish and put her personal career above the welfare and well-being of her constituents.

You should not have to "watch his back" as you so often say. He has high-paid people to do that! McCain will probably not run again, unfortunately. Pleas leave this American Hero alone–although he would say–"that is why I fought for America–so Americans could have Free Speech" You Dems savaged Pres Bush for 8 long years–time for you to have a taste of your own medicine—Cheers and God Bless America.

I can truly applaud Obama and his team for moving the Americans forward out of the dark ages they have been subjected to with the current administration! All the eyes of the world are looking to meet with the new leader and erase the downfalls and separation that has come from the White House again and again throughout the world. It is time to reverse the backwards flow of time and look towards a new enlightened period for the hopes of ALL mankind. Come back to the table and shed the old "cowboy-you're either with us or against us" philosophy.

Let's hope Senator Clinton is better at international diplomacy than she was at diplomatic relations inside her primary election campaign.

Good luck Hillary. Nice picture of her CNN.

Well, at least Clinton and Obama will be on equal footing in the diplomatic arena. Neither has any experience and both are loaded with charisma (or something)…………………………

Why bother – the brilliance of CNN (again – sarcastically) has already made the decisions and has the people basically installed – according to Blitzer, et al.
