Barbara Bush recovering after surgery.

(CNN) - Former first lady Barbara Bush started a liquid diet Monday as part of her recovery from laparoscopic surgery to repair a perforated ulcer, according to a statement from The Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Bush, 83, is "in good condition and continues to recover as expected," according to the statement. She may remain in the hospital for "several more days so her physicians can monitor the progression of her diet."

The former first lady showed up at Methodist's emergency room last Tuesday, complaining of severe abdominal pain. Doctors determined she had a perforated ulcer in her duodenum, the first portion of the small intestine after the stomach.

Doctors thoroughly cleaned Bush's abdominal cavity of any contaminants that had leaked through the hole, described by the hospital as being one centimeter in diameter. Then, doctors repaired the ulcer and sewed a piece of the omentum, fat tissue in the abdomen, on top of it to seal it.

I had her doctor ( Dr. Reardon) operate on me with laparoscopic surgery a year ago. He is truly the best at this type of surgery and I wish her Gods speed on her recover.

James: There is a time and place for everything. Not because people are disenchanted with Bush (who incidentally has just 'fessed up' to his mistakes) it means they will bash his ailing mother. Come on!

I personally wish her the best, and I know she tried her best to raise her children well.

Jay, Louisville Ky   December 1st, 2008 5:20 pm ET

James at 45, give it up. Your bitterness is old....you lost....go away..be happy....take your mom out to dinner....get a date...something...just goaway

George has acted like he's been on a "liquid diet" for the past eight years; maybe he can give his mom some advice now that she's on one also.

This lady is the only admirable person in the Bush family. She is such a motherly force. She was always interested in the character of her family, even when they showed a lack of it. I wish her the very best. She deserves it. She is truly a first Lady.

Laverne   December 1st, 2008 4:45 pm ET

I can only relate to Mrs. Bush in that I've had an ulcer for the last eight years that was caused by her little dictator and "decider" of a son. I guess we should all go on a liquid diet after being fed the B.S. and other ideological garbage by this abysmal administration that has ruined our standing at home and abroad.

Bush Legacy-prison bound   December 1st, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Who cares!!... jr would give anybody ulcers!!!

johnny c   December 1st, 2008 4:00 pm ET

NO ONE CARES ABOUT ANYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO A BUSH. THESE TYPES OF BUSHES ARE NOT NEEDED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THEY SHOULD BE A BAN PRODUCT COME JANUARY 20,2009.

Barbara in NC   December 1st, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Her son "W" probably caused that ulcer. I know he's caused me plenty of headaches.

Jackie in Dallas   December 1st, 2008 3:53 pm ET

I didn't like Bush Junior or even Bush Senior much, but I've always admired and respected Barbara. She has her own opinions and is always blunt and straightforward. Godspeed and a quick recovery!

I too began a liquid diet...eight years ago when her son was elected.
Now I am a member of AA.
