Yes, the President could have probably done something to improve the bad situations we are in now. Al qaeda was formed long before GW took office. The terror attacks on 9/11 were planned in the YEARS before GW took office, not just the few months he was in office. The great Clinton was president during that time. He didn't seem to be too concerned about it then.
Yes 9/11 was on Bush's watch–yes Bush may have missed warnings. But Clinton missed warnings and more obvious outward signs for an entire 8 year administration (like the first attack on the WTC in 1993–doesn't get more clear than that what Al Qaeda wanted to do). What did Clinton do while he was in office, besides an intern? Nothing. So anyone that blames Bush exclusively for allowing a an organization like Al qaeda to grow from a few thousand hoodlums into the worldwide cancer that it has become, when the fact is that most of its significant development occurred prior to 2001 is ignorant.

Something will likely happen during Obama's watch. And people will cry and blame Bush–some of it likely justified, some of it not.Bottom line is that are ALL responsible, both those on the clock, both those in the past, both those democrat and republican. Liked McCain as a viable option in the early stages. I always knew he wasn't another Bush... never was.
But, when the moment came to make his first major decision... his running mate... McCain couldn't have shown more weakness or less integrity.
McCain chose Palin for political expediency... he obviously thought he would be able to win over women after Hillary's defeat to Obama.
To me, that just showed how poor McCain's judgment really was. And, frankly, I would have rather seen him choose a VP candidate with some chops who could have lent some credibility in the areas McCain was weak. Instead, he chose Sarah Palin.

Yes, it was his administration that ignored the briefings about Bin Laden being determined to attack using hijacked airliners. Yes, it was his administration whose members stood in front of television cameras as Katrina made landfall and told us, "We are not aware of any people in the New Orleans convention center". Oh, and they said this while the rest of us watched people suffering from our very own television screens, as the coverage from ever major news station was nothing but Katrina. Yes, it was his administration who was STRUCK DOWN by the Supreme Court of this land more than once for the illegality of its policies regarding torture and special trials.

Oh, yes, the list could go on and on for pages here. We all know its true. Even the Bush-Lovers on this blog know these things are true. So, all of the hate going around on here isn't really a dispute over whether Bush was a good leader or not. Clearly, he's not been a great leader. I would defy anyone to demonstrate otherwise. We are clearly worse off than 8 years ago and much of the blame does go to the guy who was supposed to be guarding the till... you know, the President? He's supposed to make sure we aren't robbed blind by the congress.

Still, Bush probably is a nice guy. We all know we thought he'd be great to hang out with and play a little pool or darts.
And, to his credit, he really has made quite an enormous commitment to the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa. So, that's good.

Any quaking took place because Bush sat like a deer in the headlights for seven minutes. And then there were the news reports that no one knew where Bush's plane was and Cheney was in a bunker somewhere. Easy to think that they abandoned us.

Rant on Carter all you want. He was a President who was unable to fulfill many of the things he wanted to do. However, he mediated peace between Israel and Egypt, ending a conflict that went back, oh, 5000 years or so. He brought some stability to the Middle East. That alone puts him above Nixon (whose actions threatened a democracy) and Bush (who presided over problem after problem and had no idea how to fix it).

This is the most poignant and self-reflective I've ever heard Bush. Almost makes you believe that Cheney spending the 1990's building up Haliburton/KBR to be given a no bid contract worth billions had nothing to do with invading a country that didn't attack us.

And he's right, Bush did just continue the same approach of deregulation that Clinton took (which in turn was just an extension of Reagan/Bush). Clinton's presidency produced the dot.com bubble and Bush's the housing bubble. However Clinton didn't just hand over (what is going to be) trillions of dollars to the crooks who caused the bubble in the first place. I don't recall Pets.com getting any $80 billion tax-payer bailout.

We're all going to be paying off this presidency for a looooong time. Particularly the 30,000 + wounded vets from Iraq and the families of the dead.

I enjoy reading these comments and seeing how many different ways that people can take a rather humble statement and twist it into another reason to hate Bush. Paraphrased: "I'm sure it's at least partly my fault that the Democrats ate our lunch in November". Not only is it true (Obama's strategy against McCain was focused on equating him to Bush), it's kind of admirable that the guy is taking responsibility for the fact that the struggles of his administration have hurt the GOP overall.

Maybe I'm alone in this (and it sure seems like it the more I talk with people about politics these days) but I prefer to oppose policies, not people. Let me explain. I voted for Bill Clinton in 1996, having done almost no research into his policies...I was just a college kid who thought the previous 4 years were pretty good. When the Lewinsky scandal broke (i.e. when Bill admitted the relationship), I opposed Clinton's conduct. Upon some research, I discovered that I disagreed with him in many areas regarding his decisions and policy positions. That was my lone regret in voting for Clinton, is that I did so without understanding what he actually stood for, that I had fallen into the trap of supporting the messenger without bothering to find out what the message was.

This didn't change the fact that I thought Clinton was a good man who was genuinely doing what he felt was best for the country. I thought the same thing about Al Gore in 2000, and John Kerry in 2004, and Barack Obama in 2008. I also thought the same thing about McCain in 2008, and even about Bush. I respect the office, sure, but I can't say I didn't respect any of the candidates I've been presented with in the past 12 years.

I guess my point goes back to a quote from the Godfather series: "Never hate your enemies, it clouds your judgment". In some cases, I adamantly opposed a candidate's policy positions, yet at no point did I ever find myself hating the candidate or their supporters personally, or thinking less of them as people.

Now be honest with yourself...can you say the same?

When Clinton left office, this country had a surplus of money. I just 8 years the country is in the worst financial shape since the depression. We owe China trillions!! His time is up....he should be arrested by the World Court and tried for war crimes. I think W should have to answer fot the crap that he has done!!!

Not entirely true or correct. The democratic vote for 2000 and 2004 was not energized. More than half of the democrats registered didn't vote. In 2000 because we thought Gore had it in the bag; I mean really why would the country pick a knuckle head over an educated environmentalist – fooled us and the world. In 2004, Kerry although he seems like a nice guy really wasn't the choice the democratic ticket wanted and we were as the republicans were this year – without a real candidate we can rally behind. What the Bush presidency did was make us realize how important each of our "one vote" really is. He demonstrated to us that the President really can screw up the land, the country and our world. To Brian-Omaha: when Bush talk office he was warned by U.S. intelligence about Al Queda and Bin Laden's increase of activity, but the neocons in his adminstration pressed for a removal of Saddam Hussein instead of concentrating on that threat. Many of them were members of the Project For the New American Century and had pressed for Hussein's removal since Clinton was in office (they sent him a signed group letter urging him to do it). During the time from Bush's election to 9/11 no one was closely watching Bin Laden and as soon as 9/11 happened the neocons in Bush's administration tried to link 9/11 to Hussein so they could continue their plan to oust him. I am not making any of this up. If you know about this and still think Bush should have gone into Iraq, then you might consider the millions-yes, millions-of totally innocent Iraqi civilians who have died or been displaced since the war began. The U.S. has caused far more harm to all of those dead Iraqis than Hussein.

The sociopathic mentality, without conscience, of the GWBush admin allowed them to do anything they wanted as they focused on Special Interests and a select few, who returned both covert and overt support, financial contributions and promised compensation for after leaving office, all while giving the average American only apathy, the costs and an abundance of subterfuge. We are now suffering the results of all of this and can only hope, in contrast, that we can trust the Obama admin to conscientiously address the problems and to be honestly transparent in the process.

I think that Bush did the best job one could do in a bad time. One thing he has been blamed for lately is the economy. There is currently a worldwide depression, not just in America. The economy inevitably has its ups and downs. As for people's feelings on the war in iraq, the news media has shown only the bad side of the war since that is what people like to hear about. 4,000 dead in five years is nowhere near as bad as many people make it out to be. It is horrible, don't get me wrong, but they were all volunteers who knew America's main foreign policy is as a world police.

You must admit President Bush has an uncanny ability to recognize the obvious. Say what you will about the President but he has given hope to a lot of Americans; if somebody like him can become president then anybody can. On the other side of the coin President Elect Barack Obama has also given Americans a lot of hope for the same reason but in a good way.

To CJ: Why should anyone go to California to start their own country. It would make much more sense to do it in Alaska where there is already a secesstionist organization. And, Obama is not the same as GW Bush. Obama has a firm grasp of the english language and has education in economics and constitutional law. He is already in motion to get things running as soon as he's in. He's proactive not reactive.

I happen to like GW Bush as a person. He's a nice guy and kind of humorous. He, however, is not a good president. He lets people lead him around too much. Obama will accept advice from others but will still be the leader.

By the way, I mostly voted for Obama because I no way wanted McCain in office. He ran his campaign horribly and made a lousy choice for VP. It actually had nothing to do with how I feel about GW.

Bush had 8 years to prove himself as a leader and on the whole, he failed at his job. We had a chance to remove him from office four years ago after his administration defied the UN and the International community to start a War against Iraq under the flag of Homeland Security.....we knew there was no evidence of WMDs, British intelligence admitting that information was "sexed up" to further bolster support for the invasion (keep in mind this fellow subsequently committed "suicide" days after revealing this). After all this, we as a nation re-elected him to another term and surprise, things deteriorated further.

Now here we are today, the Dow dropped another 500 points....people losing their jobs and homes left, right and center. We as a people elected a new face into Office and trust that he will surround himself with the people needed to turn this country around. I have confidence that he can get the job done and thats why I voted for him.....but if in 4 years I dont see progress, he will not get my vote again......lets get behind our president and our country because we are in for some tough times.....its time for us to make our voices heard.

It's comical that some of you think that Bush will go down as the worst president ever. If you read a history book, you'll find oh, about 10 or so Presidents who were much worse.

As for the Presidents comments that he helped elect Obama...well it's true. Bush and his administration put a bad view on all republicans because they didn't follow the traditional republican values. One of the great things about President Bush is he always kept his word and his values. He stuck with what he thought was the best for the country. I like the fact that he never lied to the public. Intelligence said there were WMD's in Iraq, he went on that along with many other contries around the world. He didn't back down even though the intelligence was incorrect, he continued his mission to help free the Iraqi people and help them establish a democratic government.

I just hope that when my President takes office in January, he has the stones to not let these guys get away with what they have done. The Republicans blamed everything bad on Clinton, or the Democrats for the last two years, and are already blaming the recession on the "fear" an Obama Presidency has brought. At least they are consistent. "Not my fault." GWB and Rummy are traitors and should be treated as such.

Mr President, you finally got something right: We voted for Barack because you took our country's economy and public relations and raped it. I am pretty sure it's totally unrelated and unconnected, it's probably a coincidence, but isn't it funny that before this oil man (Bush) took office, gasoline was in the dollar-something range per gallon. When he took office, it was between $2.80 – $4.80/gallon for eight years. Now that this oil man is leaving, gasoline is back to how it was in the Clinton years.

It's just a guess. I am pretty sure this oil man has nothing to do with oil going for his benefit during his presidency and is now back to normal as he leaves office.

Bush did a fine job as president and I will support the Obama administration as much as I have supported the Bush administration. I can only hope that Obama does as well as he did. I don't understand how all you people can point the finger at one man for the hardships that occurred over two 4 year terms. The president does not run the country on his own; he's not a dictator. It's a collaborated effort between the president, his administration, and congress, which is a democratic majority, so stop blaming Bush and the Republicans for all of the problems in the U.S.

I think it's great that Bush understands now how disastrously he miscalculated his foreign policies, but unfortunately that doesn't change what he did. In his own words, there are no do overs. This is the reason why when the subject of war is brought up it shouldn't be rushed as his administration did. It's clear that they had no intention of stopping, they removed all the road blocks by *any-means-necessary*. I think it's the acts like this by which the administration will be remembered.

I voted for McCain/Palin in light of the last 8 years of Bush. The problem is... whenever the economy goes sour, it's been the Republican party holding the bag. Even though, we got two stimulus checks under Bush, tax decreases, and some of the best years for creating wealth. I don't know anyone who complained until this year. It was very, very easy to jump on the Obama/Biden bandwagon, and blame Bush. I left the Republican party not only because of the wars, but due them not knowing how to win, and are out of touch with the country when the economy turns for the worse. I am now a registered Democratic Party member as I believe they know what is in the country's best interests. I do remember my father wanting to explain the difference between the parties when I was 18 and why I should be Democratic or vote for them, but 22 years later I am now realizing the difference. I still don't trust Obama, but believe in the Democratic values. Long story short, Bush has some of the blame, but not all of it. It's very easy to find a scapegoat to take the fall for what happened the last 8 years. One can only think how this country would've gone under Gore and Kerry. I think we'd be in the same mess.

In a way, Bush is right. People voted for Obama because the mistakes Bush has made – from Iraq to Katrina to Gitmo – reminded a lot of people exactly what we shouldn't be looking for in a President. As to Bush's decisions, they were not bad because they were unpopuplar (actually dear, many of them were wildly popular at the time–they only became unpopular when people realized they were BAD) they were bad because they were bad.

Let's recap–unnecessary war is BAD (particularly when popular).

Waging war without a clear strategy for victory and without plans for withdrawal is BAD.

No-bid contracts are BAD, especially when you eliminate any audit of said contracts.

Gutting regulation and oversight and letting the banking industry write banking laws is BAD.

Gutting the FDA is BAD (remember the outrageously high number of bacterial contamination cases there have been in the past 8 years...)

Alienating our allies is BAD.

Ignoring the warning about "terrorists determined to strike inside the US" was BAD.

Torture is BAD.

Spying on Americans because they oppose your political decisions is BAD.

We must also remember that he had the support of CONGRESS on all policies, including Iraq. It would be very hard for me to think of good things that have happened for our country during the Bush/Cheney years in office. I really do not see this as "bush bashing" it is more of a reality check than anything else. I do not feel that my government has been handled in a way that I am proud of. Bush/Cheney have given us such a bad reputation in the rest of the world and the problems here at home are so big that it seems hardly fair to not say that this was the worst Presidency in my lifetime- which is over 60 years – this would include from Truman thru Bush 43. I wish Bush many years of retirement but get started sooner rather than later – as for Cheney I could care less.

Bush is only partially right. When Obama and McCain were first running for president, I wanted to be fair and check them both out. I listened to Obama and then tuned in McCain. Half way through McCain’s speech, my head started to hurt. How can an intelligent man say what he was saying and not feel dumb? When McCain chose Palin for VP, my ulcer acted up.

So, he was right. However, McCain lost the election because he is still living in the past.

Obama was the first politician who ran for office who was told us what he was going to do and how he was going to accomplish these ideas. McCain walked down the old road. He just told what he was going to do, but not how he was going to accomplish anything, which lead me to believe he is just a bag of wind.

The scariest part about Bush leaving Washington is that he's now going to be coming back to my home state of Texas! Isn't there some way we could banish him to some remote tiny desert island somewhere?? If he had to figure out how to feed himself all by himself– I think he would starve to death in a weeks time. The man isn't very bright or resourceful.... in addition to being incredibly lazy.

I have great hopes that from this point on the media and American society in general will do what it should have done with Nixon – ignore this and all other Bushes to oblivion. Having voted for republicans for many years, I proudly voted for Obama year. I had been a McCain fan for years but Obama had a clearer vision. It wasn't a anti Bush/McCain vote, it was a pro Obama vote.

If the [R]s wanted oversight of Fannie and Freddie so badly, as they now disingenuously claim, it would have been done...or at the very least it would have come up for a vote (which it didn't in either house). This continuous deflection of blame by the GOP, in the face of such obvious realities as their one-party rule for 6 years, speaks to a stunning level of personal and political immaturity. It is so stunning, that I again call for DNA testing of all those remnant [R]s that deny any blame for the mess our country is in, those that worship Bush and speak so highly of Palin as their savior. Good grief, for the sake of our country, let's find the genetic disorder that causes people to be sooooo stupid!!

I think when Bush's administration is analyzed, it will be seen to be the most dishonest, disprudent, irrational administration ever to lead our country. While I'm glad I never voted for Bush, I will always regret that others did.

I voted for Obama/Biden because they presented the most intelligent and progressive campaign. I considered McCain until I had a real good look at Palin – which clinched my vote overwhelmingly for Obama! Bush, my friend, you had nothing to do with it in my mind – I always want to see what the people running have to say not the past. I am very happy with the Obama President – elect and the team he is putting together. I am also very tired of the continued pointless comments about how Obama isn't doing what he said he would do and everyone including many in the news media also picking apart every choice Obama is making – give it a rest and get to the real news – stop all the drama!

I served in the Army and in Iraq under this president, the people of Iraq are better today than they were suffering under Saddam.

The problem is that it was clear what and who Bush was prior to his being elected the first time. He never really changed much. Just a constant display of ineptitude, incompetence and arrogance from start to finish. The sad thing is that at least half of the American people elected him not once but twice. We should be looking at ourselves to understand why Bush appealed to so many of us when he is clearly not qualified for the job, and moreover why he was chosen over candidates who were demonstrated to be much more qualified than he was. I can't believe private investors are going to throw their money away to help build a Presidential Library for Bush. What good things did he accomplish in 8 years that can possibly be put on display in a Presidential Library. Better yet, who would pay to go and see it?

Bush will go down as one of the most incompentent presidents in modern history. He lead us into a senseless war in Iraq which now is very difficult to leave. He let Bin-Laden off the hook by diverting resources away from Afganistan. He has lead us into economic peril which has resulted in millions of Americans being unemployed and our economy in shambles. He has isolated this country from our alies and potential alies. He has helped create millions of new jihadists in the world all wanting to take aim at the U.S. No, I have no respect or sympathy for a man who was so stubborn and that manipulated intelligence information to get the American public to back his ill conceived war. He should pay a thousand times over for his follies, not be remembered any other way.

As much as these men are presidents, they are also simply men – not perfect, certainly not the embodiment of all that America hopes for, and definitely not the ultimate solution to our nation's woes. But they deserve our respect for trying – and in that collective spirit of uniting and supporting for the greater good, we all just might find that the real answer lies in us – and our ability to reach up and across to those we may disagree with, but that we share our great home with. What a difference civil discussion, respect and true willingness could make in the United States of America.

The "Dems" have not run the country for the last several years. In case you missed it the Republicans had control of the house and senate from 1995 to 2006. In 2006 the Dems won a majority too slim to override a veto or block filibusters. The Republicans have had the white house since 2000. The Bush stimulus checks were sent out starting in Feb 2008, he had been in charge eight years, and they did nothing to help the economy, which was already in trouble. We now have record debt thanks to your "figurehead"

FIRST the economy when clinton turned the running of the government over to bush was doing very well, stock prices up, oil prices low, the average spnedaable income of Americans was on the rise for the first time since Nixon., a SURPLUS was in the offing. So the economy was NOT failing when he took over, the tech bubble burst AFTER bush was in office.. I feel it occured as a reuslt of him getitng in office.
SECOND I have worked since I was 18, did 21 years in the military and put myself through college (sorry no GI Bill for me I was under VEAP) now have a full time job, and am NOT looking for a government handout and resent you thinking that because I voted democratic this year I am some poor person on the dole.. I am not.
THIRD the stimulus check was to bail out the failing economy after 9/11 attacks and bushes failure to respond adequately to them in a reasonable time.. guess he was too caught up in the story about a goat....
FOURTH The dems have NOT run the country for the last two years, they do not have a veto proff majority in the Congress and bush has vetoed most of the legislation they tried to put in to get control of his almost dictatorial powers (which were supported by a republican ribber stamp congress for 6 of bushes 8 years)
FIFTh and FINALLY the fact is clinton did not take care of biun laden when he had a chance.. however look who FUNDED bin laudens rise to power, it was reagan and bush sr. bin laden was considered an ally to the US during their terms.. as well as they put saddam hussein in power, they also stopped the palestinian.isreali peace program that President Carter had started, as well qs reversing many of President Carter's policies towards the middle east which would have prevented those like bin laden from rising to power on his hatred of the US so if you want to lay blame I would point to the republicans long before I got around to pointing to the clintons.

I don’t think people voted for Obama because of Bush personally, although it was his policies were against....they voted for Obama because they saw a fresh, young face with new ideas, that just wanted to get this country back on track.
Bush was so out of touch and has been for years, he has totally lost the plot when it comes to understanding what the country really needs and how to go about fixing it. I do honestly believe he is a nice man outside of politics, but Presidential material he never was as far as I’m concerned.
I do however wish Bush and his family all the best after he leaves office, I'm sure it can't come quick enough for him and it can't come quick enough for me to see Obama as our new President.

The problems we are facing are a result of many things that went wrong, both before he took office and also from other people in Congress during his time, and other people in his administration. Sure he probably made some poor choices, and is not a good on-the-fly speaker like our new president elect.

Yes he took us to war, but if you had to make that decision, and its a couple years after 9-11, and you have your brightest advisors giving you intelligence that terrorists are making and piling nuclear weapons in iraq, and iraq repeatedly refuses to let UN inspectors in, can you tell my you gaurantee you would not choose to go with your advisors? I'm not sure what the answer is, but I don't think he was facing an easy decision.
And to compare him to a cruel dictator like Saddam Hussein is both silly and unfair. Everyone who has studied this dictator at all knows about the creulty Saddam inflicted on his own people, and that he has killed countless people for no reason. I love this country, am excited about Obama, and respect the job that Bush had to do during his tenure. He was a victim of the times so to speak, and I don't think anyone else sitting in that chair over the last 8 years would have been able to do something remarkably different in a more positive way.
