Obama rolled out his national security team Monday.

CHICAGO (CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama selected New York Sen. Hillary Clinton for the position of secretary of state Monday.

Obama also announced his decision to keep Defense Secretary Robert Gates in his current post, and named retired Marine Gen. Jim Jones as national security adviser.

Watch: Obama nominates Clinton to lead national security team

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano has been named secretary of homeland security, Eric Holder as attorney general, and Susan Rice as United Nations ambassador.

"In this uncertain world, the time has come for a new beginning — a new dawn of American leadership to overcome the challenges of the 21st century, and to seize the opportunities embedded in those challenges," Obama said.

"To succeed, we must pursue a new strategy that skillfully uses, balances, and integrates all elements of American power: our military and diplomacy; our intelligence and law enforcement; our economy and the power of our moral example. The team that we have assembled here today is uniquely suited to do just that. They share my pragmatism about the use of power, and my sense of purpose about America's role as a leader in the world."

New politic is a fake   December 1st, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Change that he washed our brains up is coming in America !
It is some easy to say things when you are outside , now that you are into it , you r seein that politic is a very BAD game………I still trust B.O but it's becomin a value as well as any other thing linked to the constitution – to serve lobbies – so sad as view and yet true !
The fact that Hillary's head has been pronounced means to me that Obama was pressured about her.
Change is no longer in behaviors and heads (déja vu), cuz in that field Barack lost !
I only hope his team & him will be affording to solve problems ( Change that he promised is now waited in the facts ) like crisis, and so on…………

Anonymous   December 1st, 2008 4:39 pm ET

I think what is needed right now is wisdom, somewhere along the line wisdom has left policy making in this country. The wisdom that Obama possesess is his greatest strength and as I watch him pick his team, I can't help but shake the fact that something good is on the horizon. Obama understands that we cannot look to the past for our future solutions but pering into the future to take care of our present problems. I'm hopeful for this country and the world, I think we were and still are on the edge of total destruction but I believe now that other plans are being made.

Relax Folks   December 1st, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I am amazed that people are questioning CHANGE because folks from other presidential admins have been choosen. The change will be in the direction that the LEADER directs. Surely some of you folks have been managers and business owners before. If you want new direction you need people with PRIOR experience and different ideas. Yes men drive your business into the ground. Just ask the big 3, I am sure they wish they had hired some folks that had a different view point and experience with Asian car makers. I voted for B.O. because he is a sound LEADER and he knows that change doesn't mean a bunch of folks with no experience that won't challenge anything that he says needs to be done. That is how we will get to where we need to be. I have never been moved to comment on these blogs but what I have been reading in the last few weeks from the usual commenters makes me think people want America to fail, that is just nuts!

3strikes   December 1st, 2008 4:07 pm ET

goin from a bad admin… to a worse admin…..from bad to worse. let the questioning of nobamas so called "good judgement" begin. change = pander = 65+ million lemmings believed, now go jump off a cliff for your nov4 decision

Bonnie in Wilmington NC   December 1st, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I don't suppose that anyone on this comment page (including myself) was contacted as an expert opinion or asked to give their expert advise by the people that are actually doing the vetting or making the list of candidates. I'm thinking that the wacky comments here are indicative of the inability to make constructive comments and suggestions are a clue as to why we weren't "consulted". Again, and again, y'all crack me up and give me a reason so laugh at ourselves. Are any of you getting paid to look like fools, or are you just being yourself? Either way, thanks again for the humor. It's all good.
Take a breath, and have a nice day.

Jeff from Atlanta   December 1st, 2008 4:02 pm ET

After reading these blogs for the last 8 weeks it has become obvious that the Obama supporters are hypocrites. You yell to support your PE yet you never supported Bush. (and please don't argue that Bush is the worst president ever. The democrats caused this banking crisis by their policies with Fannie Mae. With Pelosi, they continue to make the same mistakes and take partisanship to a new level). You claim you want change but support the same old Washington insiders. There are experienced people out there that are not insiders today.

I don't believe in Obama. Never had. I think he talks a good game but his policies will result in recalling Bush's presidency days as the "Good old days". Maybe he is smarter than that and will let the economy naturally come back as it always does, but maybe he is a true democrat and will screw it up ever more for the next guy as Clinton did. I’m hoping he is smarter than that and I am willing to give him a chance, but for you to consistently diss Bush and then say don't diss my guy, sorry you hypocrites.

Maggie in NYS   December 1st, 2008 4:01 pm ET

To NY republican – Governor Paterson will be choosing Senator Clinton's replacement. You don't really think he'll replace her with a republican, do you? LOL

PK   December 1st, 2008 4:00 pm ET

What a change ! From Halliburton (otherwise known as Cheney) knows best to let us hear from different points of view.

Mike   December 1st, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Funny. I would have thought that the conservatives would be okay with Clinton as SOS. She's about the most hawkish member of the democratic party.

Truth Hurts   December 1st, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Lets face it. Barrack "I Inhaled" Obama is in way over his head.

He is hiring all of his former rivals for the democratic president slot thinking "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer" but he cant hire all the republican enemies he has or will have.

America is about to turn on Obama. His honeymoon will last a few days, not months, once he gets into office.

Watch out below, Obama approval ratings are going to crash like the stock market.

KJ, GA   December 1st, 2008 3:49 pm ET

I think it's wonderful that Obama's team will conisst of lots of women and minorities (more representative of America than ever!)

Mike   December 1st, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Who will hold these people accountable for all their lies?

———————————————————————————–

The same people that held Bush accountable for all of his lies, mistakes, and blunders.

No one.

Hans Zeunert   December 1st, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Hope of global healing has entered the world with the election of Barack Obama for President of the United States and his choice of Hillery Clinton as his Secretary of State. It proves the correctness of the "Theory of the Unified Mind", and that a new Age of Mankind has begun. There is a Step in Consciousness. This is easy to see.

Cindy   December 1st, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is excellent choice
way to go mr. Obama

PUMA for McCain   December 1st, 2008 3:48 pm ET

We some of the PUMA do not regret voted for McCain. We do not want Hillary to work for Obama for any position. We want her to retied and go fishing with her husband any time she likes.

liz   December 1st, 2008 3:48 pm ET

I am so glad PE Obama understands that the sure way to fail is to try to please all of the people all of the time. He is more than aware that some of these appointments may upset some people and does not care in the least because he is putting the needs of our country first! I voted for him and am more than happy to let him do his job. I often tell my child to take a nap or read a book when she begins to whine as so many posters here have. Try it and let me know if it works for some of you as well.

Ia Guy   December 1st, 2008 3:47 pm ET

At least Richardson didn't get it. He thought it would be his reward for his betrayal of the Clinton's. I can see Hillary getting the last laugh now.

It appears Obama respects substance over loyalty afterall!

Alan   December 1st, 2008 3:46 pm ET

So if Obama picks experience it's "insiders" and we've all been scammed but if he picks unknowns he would be "terribly inexperienced with no one to turn to."

Isn't it interesting how many Republicans can't stand Obama because of all the incredibly intelligent moves he's making just putting together his team, while the "intellects" of the entire world shake their heads in wonder at the total lack of brains exhibited without fail by Palin?

Truth Hurts   December 1st, 2008 3:43 pm ET

What a pathetic excuse for a cabinet. Slap in the face of the year award goes out today to Bill Richardson.

President Barrack "Smokey" Obama is going to have no control over this cabinet, or his presidency.

He will be a one term loser. His selling skills from the campaign trail will not turn into leadership in the White House.

Truth Hurts

ron   December 1st, 2008 3:41 pm ET

no surprise, remember during the campaign when Obama met with Bill Clinton…I am sure Pres Clinton ensured it would be his wife and HIS friends in the cabinet after the election…or he would have withheld his support or even endorsed McCain. I am laughing about it because it finally shows what a pawn Obama is to for Democratic Party Political Machine.

young and informed independant   December 1st, 2008 3:39 pm ET

PETE- as an Obama Lefty, i feel wonderful!!
i am glad to see mr president elect moving forward with the best people possible to help his vision on chaging the way the world looks at us!

Harold   December 1st, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Everyone who complains about the pick probably have no idea who would be qualifed for cabinet positions. No one on this site has studied the background of possible candidates so opinions are just like a_ _ _ _ _ _ _,everyone has one.
Instead folks should be upset about the current President, doing nothing while Rome ( U.S. economy) is burning.
Sure blame Obama for all the woes the country is suffering that is what whinners do, they look to place blame.
Doubtful this country can get much worse but if it does, then all of you haters will have something to talk about. Until then, your opinions don't make sense or matter!

Matt: honestly   December 1st, 2008 3:38 pm ET

I have some news for all you people saying Hillary 2012. The Democrats already have their candidate. His name is Barack Obama. She can't run as a Democrat in 2012. She will have to wait until 2016 if she is going to run again.

Susan   December 1st, 2008 3:37 pm ET

We are proud of Obama. He is picking an excellent cabinet. We know Hillary will do an excellent job.

Jackie in Dallas   December 1st, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Rainy,

We have enough of our own home-grown idiots in Texas…please don't encourage any more to move here…

Surprise, people, Obama has opinions and beliefs. He told you he might not always do what you wanted, but he would always listen…and he has. I haven't agreed with all of his selections, but remember, HE"s the one that has to work with them, not you or me. I believe he has a plan, and knows what he's doing. It would be nice if you gave him a chance to actually be sworn into office and work for a few months before you start criticizing him. Cabinet members can be replaced if they don't work out; and there's always the election in 2012. Maybe you'll have the chance to see what a real dunce can do if you try to elect Palin.

Sarge in Florida   December 1st, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Why in the world are most you of you bashing Hillary because she will be SOS? We need a Clinton name to save this country that is so hated world wide because of Bush/Cheney screw you attitudes that they conveyed around the world. I went to Germany a few years ago and most of them hated me because I was from the USA and they hated Bush. I had to tell them as an American I did NOT vote for that LIER. Then I was treated better…So you go Hillary and make the other countries love us again just like they did when we were ATTACKED on 9/11.

Janice Illinois   December 1st, 2008 3:34 pm ET

I just want to say to anybody that keeps bringing up Bill in this situation, Bill is NOT running, Bill is not going to do this job, Hillary will , She is her own person and woman, Very capable of helping Obama. Bill doesn't need Obama for any thing, and Hillary don't need Bill to shine on, she'll be just fine , after all she's tough and she is a WOMAN!!

Joyce in Indiana   December 1st, 2008 3:33 pm ET

It is probably not realistic to expect die-hard conservatives to be happy with anything that PE Obama does, but I would ask you to keep an open mind. I was extremely apprehensive when President Bush came to power, but I hoped I might have been wrong. Unfortunately, I was overly optimistic.

Now I hope that those who are worried about Obama as president will at least keep an open mind, and I believe that their fears will be unfounded. No, you probably won't like everything he will do, but that is why there will be another election in four years.

The "change" that some seem to be so concerned about is in the open mind of the president-elect. He is not afraid of dissenting opinions, and seems to be nominating people who will not be afraid to give them. I eagerly await the new administration.

You know whats funny? This is how you know Republicans are hypocrites to the nth power. They say in one breath he isn't experienced enough, and in the same sentence says he knows how to lean far left and then towards the center because he is a seasoned politician. Hahaha

Chuck   December 1st, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Those worryijng about Hillary's experience in foreign affairs need to stop complaining. How many people truly have experience in foreign affairs. Especially people who would not be considered part of the Washington establishment. It takes no great experience to know that one functions as Secretary of State by pursuing the interest of the United States across the globe, making friends where you can and keeping tabs of your enemies. What's the big deal. Speak up front, be honest, fair and firm with foreign leaders and that's all you need to know. Experience – it's overblown.

DX in TX   December 1st, 2008 3:26 pm ET

It's rumored that Jeb Bush will make a run for the white house, but with the arrest of his youngest son and the 2004 Florida voting problems, not to mention the obvious connection to G.W. I doubt Jeb will through his hat in the ring. However, his son George P. Bush is one to keep your eye on. By the time he is old enough the Hispanic population will be the majority in the United States. With his Hispanic / White heritage he will win hands down, but not until 2028 or 2032.

I would not be surprised if Karl Rove wasn't grooming G.P. Bush as we speak.
A scary thought…

Jackie in Dallas   December 1st, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Hey, neocons talking about "no change"…do you think McCain would have had the courage to select someone like Huckabee or Guilini to his cabinet? Not a chance in heck. He would have done just as Bush did and filled it with buddies and those he owed favors to.

I'm not a big Hillary fan, but she may surprise me and actually do a good job in this role. And at least PE Obama is not selecting a group of "yes" people for his Cabinet. I just hope that Hillary is aware that it is HIS policies that she will be responsible for implementing, not her own…

The change will come later…when everyone get's in position to get us out of this mess that the Republicans got us into.
This is going to be like losing weight…it took 8 years to put on, and now it's going to take some time to take it off (the dark cloud).

Puff: Sarah can do what job single handedly? Win that war with Iran? The one only Sarah Palin thinks we are engaged in? Or secede from the Union? Or sell a billion dollar pipeline to the Canadians – and give them a $500 million bonus? Seen any action for that $500 Million? Nope. They haven't filed a single claim, haven't done a single study, and haven't even put a shovel in the ground. Or free American schools from sorcery and witchcraft? Or plan a sanctuary in Alaska for those awaiting the Rapture – since she's stated that Alaska will be a good place to be when it comes? Or maybe start a brilliant abstinence-only campaign. It's hard to know just where she would begin.

Turn Republican   December 1st, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Democrats know Hillary was qualified to be a president. For some reason they trashed her. I still say Obama has no experience that's why he picked the Clinton's administration and some Republican to do the job.

l williams–I think Palin would have handled Sept 11 or that 3 am phone call faster and better than the present Pres-elect! He would have to consult with his many handlers–she is smart enough and has experience and judgment. I bet you libs just love my comments! I find it fascinating that you expect us to prop Obama up after you savaged Pres Bush for 8 years.

When the Hillary supporters got up-in-arms about Obama not selecting her to be VP, they failed to see this choice coming :) . Hillary's strong diplomatic and political skills are exactly what we need in a SOS. I think that even the Middle-Eastern countries where women are treated as objects rather than people will pay attention and listen to Hillary.

If she hadn't taken the SOS position, I would've loved to have seen her as Secretary of Health and Human services. However, I have a feeling she'll be working a little with Daschle on that, too.

Ron in CA   December 1st, 2008 2:59 pm ET

You liberals are such hypocrites. Amazing how you call out us republicans because we don't crawl to your delusions. Why didn't you say to yourselves we need to rally around our current president? Take a look at India. This current administration cares more about safety of America, even with the libs stabbing him in the back everyday, every minute and blaming him for everything, even the high gas prices. Any lib humble enough to thank him for our low gas prices now? No, you don't know how. I just hope to God, that I don't have to carry a sign around because of our president elect and his anointed ones, like those in India, saying "our government is not capable of stopping terrorists". I know, I have been working defense for 25 years, and almost lost everything working to secure safety in this country. So don't blame conservatives, because you have lived in safety because of our president that you would never support, only stab. So, if you are not a hypocritical dem, they why don't you say "we should all be americans, and not only rally around our president elect, but also around our current president".

Some will always criticize President Elect Obama no matter what he does. They can't see past their prejudices, fear and anger which is unfortunately because we are the United States of America and living in perilous times. What a shame to be hating on Obama when there are soo many other pressing issues that face this nation. Obama is doing a wonderful job thus far. He has not even taking office, yet he has found a way to bring confidence to our people which his more than I can say for our current president. He chose to pick Hillary as his SOS, so be it! If anyone voted for Obama based on the fact that you think or thought you could make the decisions for him, too bad! He has a mind of his own and does not mind using it. I don't know why everyone is acting so surprised that he picker Hillary. What people need to remember is if Obama fail, America fail, if Obama succeeds, America succeeds. That is what's wrong with America, too many people who are disloyal to our country. You are supposed to pray for your leaders. God Bless you Obama and everyone in your administration! And God Bless America even the ones who do not act American or treat others in our country like Americans.

first off, this is NOT CHANGE, and i feel betrayed, and is is just awful. If you think you can control your enemy by having them near by, forget that with the clintons, they are beyond all of that..

i am dissapointed , in addition, that this send the same old same odl message we will support the israelis, and a wrong message to the Arab world..

finally, having bill's old cabinet, and his rookies, and then we still dont know who is in the foundation's list_ besides bin laden's brothers and friends..

I guess, we will see what happens in the next year.. she wont last long, she will try to do soemethign against Obama and hopefully then he learns…………….

All you people who are screaming that this isnt what you voted for – please give Obama and his cabinet a chance before you jump to the negative conclusions you have already. So far all of his people are intelligent, thoughtful, experienced. Did you think he would pick you? When he said he was the candidate of change he most likely meant that he was going to change Washington so that is finally started to do the job it is supposed to do. I hope all of the readers skip over the negative comments.

Bush is president. Is he fixing the economy? Is he fixing our national security and foreign affairs problems. Is he addressing health care? WHY NOT?

Instead we are blaming Obama for imaginary stuff. How about worrying about reality? That is the change Obama brings – a focus on reality.

Most of the comments here are so detached from reality it is insane.

You can either get on-board and help with improving this country, or you can wallow in your rightwing grief and dogma. I get a kick out of the Republicans posing as Dems or Independents who voted for Obama but are already criticizing him. Keep complaining about "lack of change" because of the people he is chosing.

You show that you don't have the brain power or foresight to understand that the change is in the policies not necessarily the people.

Keep whining and complaining because your candidate didn't win.
We'll move forward and you can stay behind with your radical ideological beliefs, the rest of the Nation will move ahead and progress.

I'm very happy that there are a number of women in top positions.

All good people and respected and I think they will do a great job.

Give them a chance, folks! Most of you posters are still young'ns and don't have the history that I do as a senior retired woman who worked hard to give you many opportunities we didn't have, such as decent child care facilities that were non-existent when I was your age.

And insistance that we get our rights to birth control and owning our own bodies.

Etc. Etc.

Since I don't know anything about Janet Napolitano, I don't know if she is qualified to be Secretary of Homeland Security. I don't know why Obama picked her. That said, I think the rest of his choices are excellent. I am not sure what Democratic outsiders there are that would have the experience to fill these important positions.

Now that Barack Obama has officially named Robert Gates and Gen. Jim Jones as part of his new administration; it would be nice to hear some of the airheads on Fox news and others of their ilk to admit they were wrong in telling the public that Obama was unable/unwilling to reach out to capable conservatives. It would be nice; but DON`T hold your breath. As usual; they were completely wrong.

Guess what folks, the word "change" is used by the President elect during the campeign as strategy to influence the young votes. We are tired of the same washington's faces" he used to say; as if he had a better way to lead this country. How many of you not to understand the Obama's strategy today? Do you really believe our troups will be withtrow from Irac in 16 monts as he has promised it during the campeign? How many of you not to notice that the kitten ate the tongue of the man?Wor many of you not notice his skripy face ?

I learned something from a great man" Sometimes you have to stop playing with the words to prevent them playing against you somedays" Good luck America!

Obama is proving himself to be nothing but a typical politician. Change? That is laughable. He suckered all of you in and you know it. You will support every decision he makes from now on just so you don't have to face the fact that he is inexperienced at nearly everything at this level. I am worried for my country and my family. Your hatred for President Bush, fueled by an angry media, put this man in office. God help us if we are attacked again with Obama in charge. Way too frightening to imagine.

It amazes me that some on the far right, that are so quick to judge and call someone "un American" or "un patriotic" want more than anything to see Pres-elect Obama FAIL as pesident of the US and complain about every move this man makes. I never once voted for President Bush, but I never wanted him to fail as leader of our country. As the president goes down so does our nation, yet some right wingers are willing to sacrifice or nation just because they don't like Obama for one reason or another and it may NOT all be just racism. The Wicked Witch is NOT Dead   December 1st, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Appointing her was a big mistake. I didn't feel the love this morning. It was all about Hillary again once she was on stage.

If America wanted more of the Clintons then why the heck didn't she win the nomination? Was it that we voted for change? Was it that we believed Obama would not have his presidency run by insiders? Or was it was her ill managed campaign and Bill Clinton's mouth and now we have her as Secretary of State and Bill hovering somewhere in the lights.

Any of the above reasons are more than enough not to have them hanging around him and for God's sake taking our nations message forward to other countries. I kind of remember his "misspeaking" on Bosnia.

Extraordinarily shrewd move. Hillary is a hawk with backbone and name recognition, maybe not as intellectual but probably just as capable as Condoleezza Rice. Plus, having her in a high-stakes, high-visibility position puts Bill on a short leash. He'll have a full-time job just running his foundation, keeping his nose clean and his pants zipped. Well, okay, his nose clean anyway.

Abe Froman - Chicago   December 1st, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Not so sure Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State is the right choice. What experience does she have in Foreign Affairs (aside from being shot at as she landed in the former Yugoslavia). I would of liked to see someone there with a little more experience. The other issue I have is when you get one Clinton, you get two. Whose Presidency is this?

His other choices are fine, not this one.

Pete   December 1st, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Hey all you Obama lefties, how are you feeling today?

Len Of Colfax, WI   December 1st, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I think we really need to wait and see how it works out.

A question: Has there been any discussion on how the Obama administration will be handling Art. 1, Sec 6 Clause 2 of the US Constitution as it affects Sen. Clinton?

Someone made the comment that the salary for the Cabinet was raised in January. In a comment I read it appears that in 1909, the salary was lowered to the previous value to accommodate another senator who desired to accept the position of Secretary of State.

And based on the wording of the US Constitution, is there the possibility that her appointment would be challenged since the wording just mentions an increase during the time of the individual being a Senator (and does not mention the addition of a corresponding lowering during the same time period)? Even if there was a return to the previous salary, there was still an increase while Sen. Clinton was a Senator.

It is interesting that the wording says "he was elected" rather than "he / she was elected" even though the first part of the clause says "No Senator".

Good for Senator Clinton — 4 years as Secretary State and then on to the Presidency in 2012.

If Clinton remained in the Senate, she would’ve had an independent voice to allow her to run against a seating president of her own party in 2012 but her taking the offer just helped Obama consolidate his power in the DEM party. It will be hard for her to divorce all Obama policy positions she’ll be tasked to implement for the next 4 years and if she does run against Obama in 2012 she’ll just look like a bundle of confusion.

The difference between a clear concise mind and one clogged with the pressure of his peers. It is obvious Obama took his efforts at getting an education seriously and not just a place to meet girls and party such as both Bush and mcCaine did. To all of you leaving the country, where are you going to go? To Canada, where they have single payer health care (socialism, i know)? Britain, where they have national medicine? France, Spain, Germany, all have 'socialist' governments compared to ours? Are you going to go to Russia? Are you going to move to China to join in the great experiment? Where are you going to go? To Brazil? Venezuela? Sweden? Norway? All 'Socialist' compared to us. Are you going to move to Africa, oh I know…Australia!!! What a great idea. Go to Australia, go to New Zealand and see how popular Obama is there…quite popular actually, as well as many of his foreign policy positions. No, you're going to be like many of us under the Bush Administration: whiners; haters; not helping.

Oh yes, and to all of you wide eyed idealists who voted for Obama…guess what, he was running for President of the United States, not to be Executive Director of your favorite non-profit or anti-war group. Are you really surprised that he picked Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State, are you really surprised that he picked a general to be his national security advisor? What world do you live in? That's how the game is played. Turn on the T.V., take off your coat and tin-foil hat, and stay for a while, it's fun here.

"Napolitano as secretary of homeland security?!?
Is Obama serious?
She can't even keep AZ secure let alone an entire nation.
Hopefully she will take her buddy, Mayor Gordon with her.

Good thing is that with her gone, it will put a Republican in charge of AZ.
Let's hope our new Governor can dig us out of the $2 billion deficit Janet put us in."

This is funny,…

Ms. Napolitano is NOT the reason for the deficit here in the State of Arizona. look back a the loss of $1 billion dollars that was lost in the fraud years ago that BEGAN LONG BEFORE she became Governor of Arizona, due to the " renewable fuels vehicle fraud".

And as was said be Napolitano herself, "the boarder of AZ and Sonora Mexico is a federal concern", in regards to the number of illegal immigrants crossing the national boarder. I know the federal government in the past considered it their responsabilty to prevent drug trafficing into Canada from the U.S. and not New York State, so why wouldn't it be the same for boarder security along the states that boarer with Mexico?

ITS NOT,…

And Ms. Napolitano has a thousand more times knowledge on this issue then almost all the idiots in Washington,…regardless of their party affiliation.

Not to mentioned she has been endoresed by McCain & John Kyl and several other Republicans as well.

I am so disappointed that he picked Hillary. Aren't there far more qualified people than her. It's time for the Clintons to be out of power; they've been in power far too long. That is what's wrong with Washington. They are all career politicians. Representatives and Senators were never meant to be career positions. These people are elected to serve the public and then they're in office so long, they forget that and begin serving themselves and their own interests instead of ours.

I understand he needs to pick people with experience, but what experience does she bring to the table for this position?

Pretty thinly veiled and typical of the right wing drivel.

Answer is: depends on the quaterback and the support he has. Remember Rothliesberger went 13-0 as a rookie for the Steelers a couple of years ago and Matt Ryan is doing great in Atlanta this year.

When you have a talented QB like Obama and a great team around him, the answer is easy.

Politics is a strange business and sometimes one must turn left to either avoid the problems to the right or to take the long route to succeed. This process is like buying a house blind and then having to deal with the problems and changing plans to make it livable.

Flexibility is the key to success in any job and unless you work at screwing the tops on toothpaste tubes eight hours a day, then you know this to be true.

Barb from Houston   December 1st, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I, for one, am pleased with Obama's selections so far and I voted for McCain, partly because I thought Obama was too liberal. He has shown me that by selecting qualified people with divergent views he plans to govern from the center. Change happens in how he implements his policies not so much on the picks he's made for his cabinet and administration, who by the way can all be branded as a "Clintonian" or DC insider. The last democratic administration was Clinton! No one should be complaining about change until after a year or two into his term – not 50 days before inauguration!

Or how about the spineless-lemming [R]-led congress that was in place for most of 2000-2006 that also helped to perpetrate the current mess on us? I suspect you would not like us to remember those things….its the only way [R]s win office….they count on the people to be either too dumb to notice or too partisan to remember.

Zero Positives:

For most conservatives, only one positive thing came out of the presidential election this year. That was when Hillary Clinton was eliminated by Obama in the Democrat Primary election. Now Obama has messed up the only good thing he has done this year by bringing back Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. Is Bill Clinton going to be included in this bad deal. That may depend on what their definition of "is" is.

This is a perfect example of how politics plays out and how logic isn't always the driving force in choosing to do anything from policy to filling in cabinet positions.

So far Obama great leadership skills are shining through and with the perfect temperment.

No Hillary = No Obama   December 1st, 2008 1:24 pm ET

It should have been the other way around. Anyway, it will be Hillary Clinton running the country behind the scenes. At least Obama has enough sense to know who will be watching his and our backs.

I guess once "moved in" and actually looked around she didn't like what she saw. Maybe our Governor will appoint a resident of the state to take your place. Hey Bush-lovin neo-cons,

Just keep up the criticism.

Since 2000 your type of leadership has resulted in Democrats taking control of a majority of of state legislatures, a majority of governor seats, a majority in the US House of Representatives, a majority in the US Senate (including 14 seats in a little over 2 years!), a new Democratic president, AND the greatest percentage of Americans identifying themselves as "Democrats" than in decades!

Thanks! Keep up the hard work, neo-cons. You're doing more for the Democratic party than we ever could!

President – Elect Obama's cabinet can and will work together to get
the problems of this country under control. Hillary Clinton was probably
the best choice for Secretary of State. I'm happy. Change is gonna
happen with the decision-making, and execution of processes that this
cabinet will make, in the best interests of the people of this country.
You can't change the country by bringing in all new people. That would
be the final nail in the coffin for all of us.

It's about time we start believing in our government again. Obama is off to a good start. He's got an all-star cast in his cabinet. He just needs to keep them working as a team. That, above all, is so necessary in these troubled times.

I think, if anybody can do it, Obama can. And to the skeptics and naysayers… well, he's got his work cut out for him… he's got to prove you wrong.

All who are crying "Washington Insiders" fail to realize Joe SixPack cannot clean up this mess. It will have to be the Insiders. Change will come from the leader. PE Obama is very strong willed and hands on. I am sure that he will be on top of everything that is going on in his administration. Sure, they are all politicians, but I am counting on PE Obama to inspire them to be better politicians.

Zaga, TX   December 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

People, change is a relection of the leadership not the team, it would be like a sport team that going in the wrong direction, you don,t get rid of the players, you get rid of the Head Coach and that coach will lead that same old team in a new direction.
A business that is failing, you don't need to get new employee what you need is a new manager or new idea from the top, so folk that are focusing on the mean and not the leader of the team is dumm), Can you see he is puting to gether a old team in a different way. When have you ever heard of a Presidential candidate becomming secutary of state? that in it self is a new kind of politics.

Give the man a chance. (all you critics and haters, atlease give him time to failed if you think he will, remember you did not belive he would win, so you already prove yourself wrong, now let him alone)

Bridget   December 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Mr. President Elect Obama, a great list of people to follow your lead and protect our country. You have my and most Americans full support because more than anything we want a safe country and world to live in and financial security.

Ted   December 1st, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Obama's trying to put intelligent people who know the job in the jobs. He's not pandering to old pals and drinking buddies. He's not padding the posts with "yes" people. He's trying to get a diverse enough group in place so all possible scenarios and concerns can be covered. We've had 8 years of uselessness and futility and stagnation. Obama's doing what a president is supposed to be doing.

And people are complaining?

Larry   December 1st, 2008 1:10 pm ET

I can tell from the comments on this issue that Obama making the right moves. Some people like his choices, some are skeptical, and the haters as usual will never like anything he does because that's what haters do.
For those in approval I say temper you enthusiasm this will be a bumpy road and mistakes will be made. It's too hard not to. Fro the Skeptics stay vigilant but keep an open mind as you always do consider all the facts before making a decision. You don’t want to “hanatize” the situation by injecting false, bias and misleading information. Besides you’re not being paid as much as he is.
Haters, I suggest you either leave the country or stick to fEAr and un-BALANCEd fox news as they cater to the lowest common denominator.

Milhouse van Houten   December 1st, 2008 1:09 pm ET

For all of you latent paranoids out there that seem to think that Obama is some kind of extreme left ideologue, his choices for cabinet thus far would appear more centrist than socialist.

I am glad to see this team. They all come with great strengths and will balance out each others weaknesses. I applaud our new president once again for demonstrating clear, thoughtful thinking in his selections. I also appreciate his steady, consistent message on who will make the decisions and who will be charged with carrying them out. Americans need to support President-Elect Obama whether they voted for him or not. He is coming into office at a time like no other. Everyone of us is losing money in our retirement accounts and it makes no difference your party affiliation. Get behind our next President.

Look, many of you liberals who were duped by the theme of change may now change your tune as well and say that you are pleased with Obama's appointees. That's fine, as long as you at least admit that "Change" was nothing more than a slogan used to win an election.

I mean 1/2 the democratic party had really mean and hateful things to say about her during the primaries and all of a sudden…as long as she isn't president…she's a good choice?? That makes no sense. If she wasn't good enough to be president, than she should not be good enough to be Sec of State.

I'm 30 yrs old and I'm afraid I'll never see a women president in my lifetime, mainly b/c what woman would want to be treated in the manner that Clinton and Palin were? It'll never happen.

Change does not come overnight. I am impressed with President-Elect Obama's methodical preparations for the daunting tasks ahead. You need to have some people involved who are "insiders", otherwise it becomes even more difficult to effect change.

The Obama Administration Team is being announced and will be soon taking the field. I am excited to see what is yet to come. It's unfair to claim there is no change until AFTER the man takes office and has an opportunity to put change into gear.

You might want to think about stopping the McCain campaign's negative nonsense…you know, seeing as how it didn't work then…and oh boy how it didn't work. Try some intelligent and constructive criticism instead.

All I have to say to you people is "Don't worry there are elections in the US every 4 yrs. Maybe you can convince 60 million + people that bush had the right idea." I look forward to a palin transition team and administration.

Oh BTW, I have said this before but it need repeating:

"Change comes from the president not from his administration"

We are no longer dealing with republicans with there friends first country last ideas.

Paul C.   December 1st, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Great choice Mr. President and one of the many reasons why I voted for Obama, INCLUSION! Eric and the other righties, you really are pitiful. Day in and day out all you do is whine like little babies in your cribs. You just can't stomach the defeat you so deservedly were delivered last month. You make no concrete or factual proof and anyone complimenting or supporting Sarah Palin really need to get their heads checked. It's gone beyond comic relief and thank God the woman will never be the Commander In Chief. But to try to legitimize Palin and keeping this pitiful idea alive that somehow she's going to be the Republican Nominee in 2012 will ensure a Republican defeat. So again, if I were you idiots I'd be more worried about how I can repair my party from the tattered mess that it is now and not make up things to make myself feel better. Now that it will be at least a decade before you ever hope to achieve any kind of majority in the government, try to open your minds more and don't carry on with this arrogant hubris that you shoved down the rest of the country's throat with W. Try to think of something bigger than yourselves, like your country for instance, and not be hateful towards Obama but help him and us put the country back together again. Otherwise you will be the cast outs of this country. You basically are yelling at the wind when no one hears or cares to hear the diatribe you consistently talk.

I would encourage a number of writers on here to see how foreigners see the United States and its President elect.

I think you would be surprised by the favourable ratings he receives for his security and economic team. His actions are bold and represent a sharp break from the outgoing administration. The break is not based on ignoring experience, knowledge and expertise or differences in views but rather embracing them as part of the process of forming policy in these most difficult of times.

Obama at heart appears to be a pragmatist and not ideologically driven at least compared to the outgoing President. Will he make mistakes? Of course but what he does seem to be is a quick learner and willing to acknowledge those mistakes and change policy accordingly. This stands in sharp contrast to the current President who seems almost impervious to new facts or evidence being presented to him that conflict with his rigid ideology which he confuses with adhering to principles.

Tessmaria   December 1st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

New beginning? Change? Sorry, but selecting a cabinet that consists of a bunch of "has-beens" who have previous records of making poor decisions is no new beginning. Tell me again why New York's skyline hasn't been rebuilt to the pre-September 11th view (and Hillary is in charge of what state)? Thank heavens someone in the DC area didn't decide to tear down or leave the gaping hole in the Pentagon simply because some idiots flew a plane into it and we're too afraid that it'll happen again.

I think that President-elect Obama wants to see just how ready Hillary is on day one to handle the 3am call and take action. Now is the time she has to prove herself as a value and not a liability or a backstabber. If she is truly for the Democratic Party and for the people then she'll do well so that she can run in 2016.

Barack Obama's first big mistake. We do not need and do not want Hillary Clinton as the SoS. She lacks any credible experience other than imaginary sniper fire and a failed run at the presidency.

Barack promised change so far all he has delivered is a bunch of Clinton cronies and one of the Clintons themself. This is what you can expect with Obama no change other than skin color and a lot of political favors.

I mean it is not like Hillary didn't earn this spot with all those great laws she created as a senator? Ohh right she did nothing as a senator.

George Marshall must be weeping for his country today.

Pundits are saying this is a Clinton redux. Look…situation is different – much, much worse. We have a smart leader who has the moral fortitude to talk the talk and walk the walk. Clinton's DLC is seasoned, but aged with new wisdom. This will be a better Administration under Obama, who has the poise to make tough decisons and make them palatable to the public. This is about big ideas and the future, not Dick Morris and appeasing the middle with marginal change.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   December 1st, 2008 12:49 pm ET

President Elect Obama has shown nothing but the even handed brilliance that made me a believer of his in 2004, that made me vote for him in the primaries, and again in the general election. I am not a fan of Senator Clinton, but I can understand why he has her as Secretary of State. I think she brings credibility and intelligence to the role. Having a statesman such as Senator Clinton brings heavyweight credibility to any discussions with foreign leader.

Anonymous   December 1st, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Why is everyone so shocked? He'd been praising Senator Clinton for a long time, even during the bitter primaries – it should not come as a surprise to anyone that she would be a chosen as a cabinet member. I was certain that they had cut some deal during their meeting after Hilary's loss. I'll admit, I was thinking more along the lines of HH&S so that she could push her healthcare plan, but I guess that wouldn't have been high-profile enough – and no one puts a Clinton in the corner!

I use to be a liberal but now I’m an independent because I realized that liberals are just as stupid as many conservatives. Too many liberals and conservatives make dumb decisions based on their ideology. Domestic and foreign decisions should be handled with care and made in a pragmatic way and the individuals on Obama’s team will do that. They are all centrist minded thinkers and hopefully their decisions will not be influenced by the crap democrats and republicans have been spewing. This might be a shrewd way of doing things but I think it’s the only way to regain America’s prominence in the world.

To all the rocket scientists out there continuing to criticize President elect Obama's choices for a cabinet, one question…

Where exactly does one go to find qualified people to get our country out of two ill-advised wars, a crisis in our economy, and a world image of our country that is hilarious? He could go to the Bush/Chaney/Rove team that created those problems, or go to other government professionals with the experience to do the right thing. Frankly, I would rather have as many experienced non Bushies as possible. This is not a time for on the job training.

Not sure if I support this choice. Hillary has always seemed just a teensy bit hawkish, and by teensy bit I mean she is far too fond of bombs and blood. Almost Thatcher-esque, and frankly nobody wants that again.

That's not to say that this pick isn't fully expected. If he wanted any hope of maintaining a strong approval rating, Obama will have to appease that shrinking-but-still-extant segment of disgruntled Hillary supporters by giving her some high-profile cabinet position. Oh well. "Team of Rivals" and all that.

AP in PA   December 1st, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Worst choice ever and not the change we are looking for!

What's really going on here and in other blogs is that the Republicans are terrified to the point of filing their pants. We're finally going to have competent, rational, reasonable people running our country and so far only one person on the team is a Republican. It's a sad day for them because it highlights that the No. 1 thing that needed to CHANGE was getting rid of all the incompetent, corrupt, self-serving Republicans that have been damaging our country for 8 years. So let them whine and fabricate irrational criticisms all they want…we know it's just that they're in denial about the CHANGE they need to make in their own party and ideologies.

By not defining what 'change' he meant, Obama has allowed each of his supporters to fill in the blanks. Now many are 'surprised' by his cabinet picks. Perhaps you should have demanded more specifics when you had the chance before the election rather than buying into a campaign slogan.

Electra   December 1st, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Its alright K, you can have your worthless useless president back! Idiots like you wont ever understand that the reason noone globally united behind Bush is because he DID steal the election and therefore was not meant to be president- Al Gore should have been, my little moron. Obama stole nothing- did you see that very comprehensive victory? Gotta hurt! Obama really is your president. Bush nearly had a chance after 9/11, but blew it big time. Just be greatful she was given a position considering the things she tried to do to derail Obama during the primaries. I am a woman and I for one do not believe that Obama was guilty of any sexist treatment towards her, I do believe on the other hand, that she was very rude to Obama and disrespected him at every chance she got. But it's nice to see that because Obama is a good man, and has a good heart, he elected her as SOS. I doubt she would've extended the same kindness towards him if she had won. But whatever its all in the past. For all of you who are screaming for us to be happy to Obama is leading us out of Bush's major problems and the economy that Bush made etc etc etc. I go news for you. Bush didn't create this mess. Granted, he did fail in oversight, but he is NOT THE ROOT CAUSE. The root cause comes from the Clinton administration demanding that banks let people who have no business getting loans, get loans. Everyone was mortgaging the American dream and alot of folks couldn't afford to own it.

Bush didn't destroy our economy, greed did that. The greed from banks, the automotive industry etc. And now you want Obama to bail out the big three? That is ridiculous. You want to give 25 billion dollars to a group of people that can't manage the money they already have? Wanna know what the definition of insanity is? And, with the nomination of Sen. Clinton, after the most intense pre-screening, vetting by the Obama-ites, should end or put to rest the lies, gossip, and conspiracy theories directed at the Clintons. Of course, those on the Far Left and Right will not let go of certain negative fantasies … by letting go, they admit to promoting falsehoods, participating in attempts to destroy others, and perpetuating lies for ideological gain.

People can criticize our newly President Elect Obama but he knows what he is doing. He is putting experience with certain expertise in certain areas. Also, Obama was right about what happened in India. He predicted this on September 10th, 2008. If you watched the interview Obama gave Bill O'Reilly off of Fox, he predicted it. He said that Iraq was not the problem with new terror cells. He said Afganistan and Pakistan was getting stronger and building while our troops was focused on Iraq. He also said that Pakistan was gearing up to attack India. And that is what exactly happened. I feel safer with Obama on Foreign Policies and the Economy!!!

Congratulations to President Elect Barack Obama for his astuteness, intelligence and integrity in selecting individuals who are leaders and visionaries. This team will undoubtedly be individuals who will once again bring integrity and honesty to the USA and not the destructive vileness of the current administration.

For all of you who disagree and feel you need to leave the USA because you disagree with the Man who will one day be defined as one of the BEST President's the US has ever had….please do not go to Canada. They don't want or need you.

I would suggest you move to Mexico or better still Saudi Arabia where you will probably feel more at home. Then again maybe you can all camp out at Bush's ranch with Bush and Cheney.

Congratulations to all the Americans who saw the light and chose a true and dignified leader. The world appreciates your doing the right thing.

JackNC,
After the disastrous 8 years of Republican MIS-ADMINISTRATION and utter bungling of everything it touched, the last to foresee problems with the future Administration should be a Republican or an Independent who voted for G.W Bush 1 and 2.

Please think twice, before writing nonsensical forecasts!!!!

Why can't people understand that the "change" that Obama campaigned on was a change in the way politics are run. Not people. If he brought a whole bunch of inexperienced, unknown faces, people would call him irresponsible. Some of the same faces, yes, but that old school rhetoric, partisian politics, no…there is the CHANGE.

Michael-Ventura,CA   December 1st, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Barack Obama takes this job with all the seriousness and purpose that should be a requirement for anyone that takes the Oath.
I trust President Obama to make the choices that are best for America—even though some of those choices aren't real popular with some of us.
We have to get past division and work together for the good of the Nation.
I am glad I worked 21 months for Barack Obama!

Hey ' K ' , Your right obama does not know how to run a country. Now that he is in charge I bet the country will suffer from a major financial crises. We will probably invade a country for no reason and stay there. Then I'll bet that right before he leaves office during a collapse of major financial firms he's probably going to the american public and tell them we need a 700 billion dollar bailout or our country will face sure dire straits. And then when he get's the$700 billion he won't know what to do with it. Your right! ALL HELL'S GOING TO BREAK LOOSE!

Personally, I think the American people need to fight the power, and take our country back! Obama is an accident waiting to happen and the ones that are going to be affected by this accident are the American People!!

That's exactly what we did on Nov 4th …. took the country back (and handed it over to the able hands of PE Obama) from GW and the repubs who had driven this country to ditch.

Napolitano as secretary of homeland security?!?
Is Obama serious?
She can't even keep AZ secure let alone an entire nation.
Hopefully she will take her buddy, Mayor Gordon with her.

Good thing is that with her gone, it will put a Republican in charge of AZ.
Let's hope our new Governor can dig us out of the $2 billion deficit Janet put us in.

It looks Barack cannot find cabinet members for his CHANGE. I am sure this is alarming to American people who have elected him. His inexperience, his knowledge is troublesome for our nation. Those who write here have no clue. We can have a big Government a huge team of advisers. Waste fo money, really.

Those two deserve each other…unfortunately the rest of who didn't vote for either of them will have to pay the price for their egos…this should be fun watching them head butt each other!"

If you didn't vote – you really forfeit the right to have have a voice in what happens IMHO. It's a cowardly approach to not express an opinion via your vote and then to complain about the approach of the administration – regardless of who wins. If you care about this country, then exercise your right to vote.

Regarding Obama's choices to date – he is showing good solid pragmatic leadership! And he's staying fairly balanced and bi-partisan. His appts appear like strong choices. They still need to be held accountable and prove they have what it takes – but great start!

This is what we seem to get with Barack

A lot of Bush-Lovers complain that there is no reason the Republicans should "unite" and move the country in a positive direction, because the "Left" didn't support Bush.

Nobody is asking Republicans to support Obama if he destroys the country. Remember, Bush's approval rating was around 90% after 9/11, 75% at the start of the Iraq War, and tapered off from there to the current 25% range. Sorry to break it to you, but people, including half of the people who voted for him, apparently, lost their confidence and support for him because of the direction he led the nation. He had the support, he blew it.

With Congress, he had a policy of unilateralism. He basically told lawmakers they were either "YEA" voters for the Patriot Act, or they were "With the Terrorists".

Try to remember a bit of recent history.

Is Hillary Clinton better or more experienced than Colin Powell, who is secretary of state under George Bush? He is loyal to both Bill Clinton and George Bush, so he will be loyal to Barack Obama. When it comes to foreign policy, in a dangerous world, who is better, or more experienced and qualified, than commander-in-chief Barack Obama or secretary of state Hillary Clinton, or the Democratic party? Remember Jimmy Carter?

Bushwhacked in Eugene, OR   December 1st, 2008 11:59 am ET

Will all you naysayers please stop whining that 'this is not change'!

Change comes from the top, from the policies of the President, not from bringing in a bunch of new people who haven't a clue how to do anything in D.C.

I voted for Obama because I liked his vision of change — the things he wanted to change, and I have every confidence he will govern with that basis of change in mind.

I think he's done a great job of selecting people whose best interests are in the United States of America, not in political ideology.

carmen   December 1st, 2008 11:58 am ET

So Bill Clinton can be even more hotly pursued by foreign governments and businesses in 4 or 8 years. What a good plan for the Clintons.

@Dan: While I'm not anti-Hillary, I'm still failing to see all this foreign policy experience she supposedly has. Someone please enlighten me

Suhasini Sakhare   December 1st, 2008 11:58 am ET

Go Ahead Hillary!

They say one woman cannot change the world for all women. Margaret Thatcher didn’t change the world for women in the UK, Indira Gandhi didn’t change the world for women in India. Each of them strove to outperform men at a game set up by men, following rules thought up by men. Both of them lived personally as feminists, neither of them dared to call themselves feminists.

Never before in modern history has a strong woman, so unashamed of being identified as such first, achieved what you have achieved. We have high hopes from you, that you will change the world not just for the women inside the US, but for all women everywhere, simply by identifying yourself as one of us.

We cannot dream of becoming a Margaret Thatcher, nor can we dream of becoming an Indira Gandhi, but all women who dream today, can dream of becoming Hillary Clinton.

Your success is almost a forgone conclusion, you are set on the path to the presidency, sooner rather than later, and richly deserved. In your success, the world will move forward with you. Things will never be the same again.

Onward.

Dictator?   December 1st, 2008 11:57 am ET

Is anyone else struck by the way Obama speaks…"ME", "I", "MY Team", "MY Advisors", MY Vision". I mean, I understand that narcisism is a characteristic that any President would have, but this is rediculous.

I'd be afraid, but I think that a lot of it is due to the "nouveau riche" effect…Obama's obviously not yet confortable with his new position of power and authority (at least, this is what I'm hoping).

k   December 1st, 2008 11:56 am ET

Mickie   December 1st, 2008 11:55 am ET

Change is in the policies a President sents, not necessary picking all new people who have no experience. His critics would find fault with that too as picking people who don't have any more experience that Obama. Let's face it, people who did not support him will find something to criticize. I beleive people should give Hillary a chance too as Sec. of State. Just because she campaigned against Obama doesn't mean she won't do what she feels is following his policy in dealing with the leaders around the world. Some people are just miserable and they will be miserable no matter what happens around them.

Competence IS the change we voted for you republican idiots. Just because we have heard of the person before doesn't mean they aren't a refreshing change, to include Hillary.

After he lets a major city sink into an ocean, starts an unneccessary war, torchures people, and tries to appoint his cleaning lady to the supreme court, appoints his college roommate to FEMA without the required qualifications, and allows his treasury secretary steal 700 billion dollars to give to his buddies, then your argument will hold water, until then, your petty criticizm is just stupid.

We are extremely fortunate that Obama had the parents he did, because they were both very intelligent and his mother instilled in her son a strong sense of responsibility and urgency for a good education.

To Pheonix:

So inother words, Obama wasn't clear enough with voters when he kept saying change? Are we now trying to change the meaning for him in order to protect him from being attacked for once again breaking from his campaign promises? Face it everyone, Obama ran a great campaign. During the general election he ran to the far left to get elected. Now he is running back to the center again. He knows politics and he knows how to get elected. He is a seasoned politician. I Gaurantee that he wouldn't be there now though if he had said he was going to appoint all washington insiders to his cabinet during the general election. But we'll never know. I am waiting till he gets into office and actually makes decisions as President before I make any judgements on him as a President. I think his appointments are showing that he is trying to be more center, than left or right. And I voted for McCain, so I am pleased so far.

That is nothing but BULLS–t, when she has already decided that his supporters aren't as thoughtful as she is and simply have the messiah complex. If you ask me, it is the Hillary supporters who have a "female messiah complex" and close their eyes to any negative qualities she had. By the way, I am female, 64 and a blue collar worker from PA. If you truly want to give Pres. Obama a chance, wait and see what he does before criticizing him.

Well done, President-Elect Obama! I like the team. A lot of people are complaining about this not representing change, using "Washington Insiders", etc. Obama doesn't need to choose unskilled, inexperienced people in order to help effect positive change. Simple ousting the Neocon philosophy from the White House is PLENTY!

As for the few random posters who actually think Clinton would run against an incumbent from her own party in 4 years…I have a hard time believing these are Americans posting. One has to believe that all American citizens are intelligent enough to know that there is absolutely zero chance of that happening.

To the people who say "this isn't change"…who exactly did you expect P.E. Obama to appoint to these positions? The clerk at 7-11 and his kids' school principal? People with no experience in their appointed positions are dangerous, which was proven when FEMA failed to respond adequately during Katrina. In order to be qualified and experienced for these jobs, you need to pick people who have done something like this before…therefore, people from previous administrations fit the bill. Why don't you all wait and see how these people perform at their jobs before you shoot them down? Obama didn't get elected our next president by being stupid.

It annoys me that she was not officially announced until after the holiday last week. It is evident to me that, while we were all expecting this, it was delayed until after Thanksgiving so the holidays news would not take away from this announcement. Hillary must make sure she gets all the attention. Many have already been picked but leave it to Hillary to draw as much attention to herself as possible.

Everyone crying "more of the same" are simply ignorant. First of all, if Obama decided to keep Bush's dog, you would scream "more of the same". Second, what is change for the same of change? Do you change your health plan just because the new cycle rolls in? I mean, come on, if you change the people in Washington and the culture persists, you have achieved nothing. Why are you whining about the people he feels can get the job done? I can understand debating failed policies if/when he has some, but pointless bickering about the people who will implement his policies, is plain useless. Believe I wholeheartedly dislike his selection of Hillary. I believe rivals should dance because someone is going to get stabbed in the back.

I am extremely happy that President-elect Obama has appointed two women for Cabinet posts in his adminsitration.

Senator Clinton and Governor Napolitano will do a great job in their respective positions.

President-elect Obama, the Vice-President elect, and Senator Clinton, the newly appointed Secretary of State are all lawyers and will uphold and respect the rule of law and the Constitution.

As an initial supporter of Senator Clinton and a supporter of President-elect Obama, I am very glad that the cabinet has strong and knowledgeable people that should do a great service in their respective positions to our country.

The Obama Change is a change in attitude, change in course, change in policy. I'd be really disappointed if he appointed a bunch of unknowns with no experience in these dismal times. We need change, but we need people with experience, respect, and true desire to implement the change Obama envisions. I see all of his picks as simply brilliant.

Walt, Belton,TX   December 1st, 2008 11:42 am ET

Like Bush with General Powell, Obama chose a Washington insider and political general to stand next to for appearances sake and General Jones should do a credible job in this role. His time inside the beltway and lengthly service in the Pentagon should serve him well in dealing with the Washington in-crowd. Hopefully, he'll let Gates do his job without trying to over-supervise.

Joe   December 1st, 2008 11:42 am ET

For all of you criticizing what Obama has done thus far and may do in the future can you be so blind as to ignore what W has done to this country over the past 8 years and his complete lack of respect for the office and this country as he hides out during his lamest of lame duck days.

You should all be thankful that Obama is on deck to lead us out of this Bush-made disaster.

Casy   December 1st, 2008 11:42 am ET

Barbara in NC, I couldn't agree wit you more! We DO need to start doing something positive for this country! Personally, I think the American people need to fight the power, and take our country back! Obama is an accident waiting to happen and the ones that are going to be affected by this accident are the American People!!

worried american   December 1st, 2008 11:41 am ET

look to me like Obama will conduct business as usuall in washington. One thing for sure after he started receiving the same briefings Pres. Bush recieves he has change his tune and decided he needs some experienced people in his administration. Got a good feeling he understands Bush's policy better too. This country is facing some great problems and he needs people with experience glad to know he realizes that now. We have a very inexperienced Pres. Elect. He sees the need to surround him self with experienced people. they will run this country for him he will just be the spokesman.

Dan   December 1st, 2008 11:41 am ET

DC Observer are you braindead or what? She lost and she won't be president until at least 2016. She has accepted it. Why can't you? Moron. She will not run against Obama in 2012 but if she did decide to she would lose. He is actually setting her up quite well for a possible run in 2016.

While I'm not anti-Hillary, I'm still failing to see all this foreign policy experience she supposedly has. Someone please enlighten me. Given his own lack of experience, I really expected Obama to pick someone with a much more solid background in the area. I think there were better picks for State and I think there where better spots for Hillary, such as HH&S (to push for healthcare reform, which had been her issue) or AG.

But I wish her and the entire Obama team well!

Pete   December 1st, 2008 11:41 am ET

Barbara in NC, your love it or leave it comment should have applied over the past 8 years. Many of your hollywood palls indicated they would leave if Bush was elected, but rescinded on their promise. Much like Obama is now doing on many of his "promises".

It's ironic that you have to put the word "promise" in quotes when talking about Obama's promises.

Change you can believe in. Change your promises once you are elected.

So, if he picks people of respect with experience he's just proving he doesn't know what he's doing.. yet if he picks inexperienced people to lead himself, then he's just being arrogant.

how about giving him a chance, you're stuck with him whether you like it or not.

Benjamin   December 1st, 2008 11:40 am ET

President elect Barack Obama has carefully chosen the brightest minds to include in his administration. He said he would reach out to those regardless of party affiliation to make this country better, and we all know this country has a lot of room for improvement. Hilliary and Barack had a good hard fought primary, but that was then and now stones lay dormant. The time is now for the country to stand behind this President, this administration and bring this country together. Racism is not a family value, so let's bury that term. This is a great country, has been a great country and will continue to be a great country. Hilliary Clinton is an excellent choice for Secretary of State. Or would you want a Sara Palin type. (don't laugh, I was being serious.

Lynn   December 1st, 2008 11:40 am ET

I think Obama is making some great decisions. Some of you may not like Hillary Clinton, but the rest of the world does, so it was a sound choice.

Sara Palin for what in 2012?? Her own talk show, sure that would work, but for president, did you fall and bump your head when you woke up this morning!!

Let me ask you this?? How do you think Ms Sara Palin would have handled the crisis on September 11th???

docb   December 1st, 2008 11:38 am ET

Obama picks clinton and the market tanks!!…Think he covered most of what was needed…

This is a shift in power…not concentrated in one appointment but spread across a broad spectrum of experienced people. The SoS appointment will be limited to sharing power with those who are truely respected and experienced! Biden, Jones, Samantha Power, Susan Rice—stoke of genius! Clinton as the token!!

Very shrewd of Obama….It took me a week of screaming to get to it!

Diffuse her and Bill in one stroke with knowledgable people covering your back!

She appeared reflective and pensive…may have just dawned on her that she is part of a team….lead by Obama! Again WAY TOO WORDY!

Go Obama!!

Serge Crespy   December 1st, 2008 11:38 am ET

I harbour no prejudices and I honestly believe President-Elect Obama will make a Great President; I simply ask ANYONE for enlightenment: The Federal Trade Commission labels products "MADE IN U.S.A." as, " All or virtually all, the product has been made in the U.S.A.; that is, all significant parts and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Products should not contain any or only negligible, foreign content ". Having a U.S. born mother and a non-U.S. citizen father renders Barack Obama, as a bi-product of his parents, only a fifty-percent "MADE IN U.S.A." product …. A definite " Head-Scratcher " for the F.T.C.!

Anyone complaining about Hillary Clinton being the Secretary of State voted for Bush twice. Do their opinions really matter at this point?

I wonder how Clinton got past the "he's not ready to lead" belief that she repeated throughout the campaign. And I wonder who will pick up the 3:00 AM call.

I just finished reading "Audacity of Hope". Every American wheather you voted for the man or not NEEDS to read this book! It will explain in a very bipartisian way the direction this country NEEDS to go! It was excellent and his choices for his cabinet are excellent. We, the American people finnally have a reason to be hopeful and secure!!!!
And I've been a registered republican for over 40 years!!! Good job so far President Obama!!! God Bless you and your team!!!

Interesting statements LB considering you voted for a man who has 0 executive experience to be leader of our country. That's right, 0…but hey, atleast he picked the Clinton administration to be his administration.

kim   December 1st, 2008 11:36 am ET

Well, it will be the idiots like Maureen Dowd and the rest of the foolish media that will continue to make strife where Senator Clinton soon to be Madam Secretary is concerned, as a Hillary supporter true and true. I have mixed feelings about her nomination, on one hand I am extremely proud of her and I know that she is qualified to do the job, on the other hand I fear for her career being placed in the hands of Obama. I enjoy the fact that this is a kick in the face to the idiots in the media and the left wing nut cases that are blinded by the messiah complex, but I fear that she will be used as a scapegoat. I trust that Hillary knows what she is doing, but I fear that the President elect may not. I am wiling to give him a chance and I will feel more comfortable at night, knowing that she will be the one handling the 3 a.m. crisis if the call were to come. It's mixed feelings all the way around, but it makes me happy to know that today, all of the Right wing kooks, and the left wing moonbats and the nasty media people especially those Female haters that tried to bring Hillary down are just burning up inside. It's a small consolation for what they put her through and I know that she will shine in whatever she does.

Hillary is not going to step down after two years. She knows when she has to EXERT her influence and she knows when she has to STEP down. She FOUGHT for healthcare in '92, but she also knew how to step down and do what is right for her man and for the country. She is the epitome of what it means to be a woman, biting the most painful defeats and making 'good' out of it.

BTW, he makes me whoosy and not in a good way! Your guy Obama is showing he does know one thing…that he doesn't know how to run a country so he's surrounding himself with people who do so THEY can tell HIM what to do. Kind of hard to win that "Bush is a puppet to Cheney" argument now though! I keep seeing his defenders state it's his policy of change that will matter, not who he puts in his administration…one DOES have to with the other, people!!

"It is time for ALL Americans to step up and show their support for the betterment of our country."

Ah yes, Terri Anne, just like the left did for President Bush during his time in office. Look, our current administration is a disaster and I'm glad to see it go. But this team that the President-Elect has selected is the same recycled politicians we've always had. There's no change there. I've read several posts that say to hold off being critical until he atleast takes office yet these are the same people who are annointing him the greatest President we have ever had and that it will be a great 8 years. He promised change, his supporters promised change and all he has done is play the same old Washington game. That's the reality and it's something his supporters should atleast acknowledge.

Joseph Johnson   December 1st, 2008 11:30 am ET

This is a strong and diverse team. It will be a challenge for President-Elect Obama to manage all of these strong personalities. But you can say that these are not just "yes" people and will tell Obama what they think is the right approach to situations. With this, you'll get the best compromise possible and the best decisions made for the country. Good job. This is exactly what I voted for. Even saying that, I'm sure I may disagree with some things the new administration does, but that's fine. There will be a lot I agree with as well.

I think SOS is a great place for Clinton to be. In the Senate, she could be a real detractor to Obama's policies. For all you doubters out there attacking this decision of President Obama…you doubted that he couldn't win the Presidency and HE DID…He obviously knows what the heck he's doing, so shut your traps about him picking Hilary and any other of the members of his cabinet! What he was referring to when he said "Change" was bring something different from what we've experienced over the past 8 years! That didn't mean he was going to nominate a whole bunch of newborns to his cabinet! He's bring strong, intelligent, experienced people to his team and to this country..and i say here here! I think his picks are as intelligent as they are bold and strong! Excellent choices Obama! Keep moving forward!

At least we'll have someone who is impervious to sniper fire, so Obama can send her to Mumbai right away and other dangerous places with peace of mind.

Good luck and God speed to each of these nominees as they move forward for the security of America. They have an extraordinarily difficult job ahead of them due to the ineptness of the departing administration. It is time for ALL Americans to step up and show their support for the betterment of our country.

Fabian Blache, Baton Rouge, LA   December 1st, 2008 11:11 am ET

I am pleased to see this process being handled as efficiently as the primary, and general campaigns.

This man is a natural born leader and someone who truly understands the value of weighing other's opinions in his deliberations.

Spectacular!

Amanda, MI   December 1st, 2008 11:10 am ET

Great future president, great team. The future is getting brighter and brighter.

Spencer/NY to VA   December 1st, 2008 11:09 am ET

This sounds like a winning team to me. Each person in the administration has their own weight to bare. I love it! This what you call ACCOUNTABILITY.

BJGT   December 1st, 2008 11:09 am ET

Obama is not perfect, but he has great judgment, he's shrewd, he has great political instincts. I don't expect to agree with or even understand every decision he makes. I expect him to govern as promised and I expect to have disagreements and I expect some campaign promises to be broken. It's called politics and situations change.

And I expect him to be a great leader of this country.

Sérgio, Porto, Portugal   December 1st, 2008 11:08 am ET

The New Dream Team? Maybe.

Scott Tucson   December 1st, 2008 11:08 am ET

OUTSTANDING! Now we're finally getting rid of Napolitano and getting someone that can fix the budget mess that Napi left us.

great picks all around

America is on the verge of greatness again. The last eight years were unacceptable. I am extremely proud of what the American people did on November 4th. We showed the world what democracy is all about. We proved that the majority of Americans want change, and that those who don't are now in the minority. America means freedom for all of it's people, equal rights for all of it's people. Freedom from Religion for those who choose none. Freedom to love who you choose without Religious interference. Freedom to be who you are no matter your race, sex, age, sexual orientation, and all aspects of the American dream that require equality. I want to see this dream come true in my lifetime. Too bad that religion will pay such a little part in this great achievement, as it has always been a dividing factor in equality.

Becky   December 1st, 2008 11:07 am ET

Ah, yes, now is the time for change. So, let's hire all kinds of folks from previous administrations. That's change you can believe in.

setys   December 1st, 2008 11:07 am ET

Excellent team. God Bless USA.

Angie-OHIO   December 1st, 2008 11:04 am ET

Way to go President elect Obama. You have chosen a very excellent and strong team. May God be with you all.

Steve in VA   December 1st, 2008 11:04 am ET

We need to hurry up and bring the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay up to the US mainland. That way, they can escape and attack our cities and innocent civilians. India is having all the action now, it's not fair.

Michelle, PA   December 1st, 2008 11:03 am ET

I like most of the people on this list individually, but I wonder how well they'll work as a team. I also wonder how much involvement Biden will have in this area. That's a whole lot of big, hungry fish for one pond. Hope they play nice!

DC Observer   December 1st, 2008 11:03 am ET

Good for Senator Clinton — 4 years as Secretary State and then on to the Presidency in 2012.

Silvia, Maine   December 1st, 2008 11:03 am ET

OBAMAAAAAAA!!!! Love this guy, he will do great things for this country.

Coleman R. Brice   December 1st, 2008 11:00 am ET

I feel utterly disgusted and betrayed. This is change? A woman who lied about dodging sniper fire while accompanied by her child will be Secretary of State? This is is not what I voted for… Thanks alot Obama

Barbara in NC   December 1st, 2008 11:00 am ET

I'm very proud of our President-Elect.

Some of you rabble-rousers need to stop stirring the stink and start doing something positive for this country, or maybe even just one of your neighbors that is hurting. It's people like you all that make me ashamed for you.

Love it or Leave it.
