Richardson is Obama's choice for commerce secretary.
Richardson is Obama's choice for commerce secretary.

(CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama will nominate New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to be Commerce Secretary at a news conference in Chicago Wednesday, a Democratic source tells CNN's Candy Crowley.

A former rival of Obama's for the the Democratic nomination, Richardson served as ambassador to the United Nations and the Secretary of Energy under President Bill Clinton.

Little ones; do your parents know that you are tinkering with the machine with buttons and a tv screen again?

Go back to bed boys, it's another bright and early school day tomorrow! They're having pizza for lunch!

60 year old white female and proud supporter of PE Obama   December 2nd, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Funny that 78% of Americans approve of Obama's choices which indicates that some very sore losers haunt this site. Amazing how so many believe they are mind readers or motive determiners when they discuss apts. and decsions of PE Obama and those who have accepted.

Sadly, it indicates that the writers are the one who are motivated by what they will get out of something rather than accept that people like those yesterday accepting Defense positions are doing it fir the good of the country. Why else would they give up mire lucrative, less stressful and more thankful jobs to jave to deal with the criticism and derision of bloggers and pundits who have not achieved any where near what they have!!

CMG   December 2nd, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Gov. Richardson is a superb choice. However, I would have preferred him in the Secretary of State role.

curtis in WI   December 2nd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

I am so impressed with President-elect Obama's selections so far. Okay, there are two one I am taking await and see attitude toward.

I like Richardson alot but Commerce? I need to hear more a bout his qualifications in this area. I'd have put him at State.

And did anyone else notice how much he is resembling the late Sebastian Cabot (TV's Mr. French) since the beard?

this was not a duplicate and i did not state that earlier.where did you ever manufacturer this ?

Clarence, VA   December 2nd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

I'll tell you why Richardson wants to move back to uninviting DC. He gets to sit at the table of history. He gets to watch how Barack works his magic in trying to get the Dems and GOP to work together. He gets to watch the first minority president up close and personal. In other words, Richardson wants to be the second minority president. He's in training.

jane s   December 2nd, 2008 5:30 pm ET

richardson's ok but......what happened to the idea that a republican would find a home in obama's cabinet: ? namely chuck hagel. many of usd will be disappointed should obama fail to find a place for hagel in his cabinet. time is running out.

And what does the commerce of secretary do again?

Sherrol in Canada   December 2nd, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Pres-elect Obama most definitely had to reward Mr Richardson for his support during the campaign, but does this particular job in the cabinet sit well with Latino voters?

Word in the media suggests that Mr Richardson wanted to be Secretary of State, can we say he's truly happy being the Commerce Secretary?

JL   December 2nd, 2008 4:45 pm ET

A diverse and smart cabinet. Richardson is a smart Dept. of Commerce choice. This is a dream-team Obama is puting together. I am impressed at how each new cabinet pick springs new hope with most people.– Well, except some people on the blogs who seem to take out their life's frustrations by anonymously being mean and negative. –

I can't believe Obama is going to appoint Richardson. RICHARDSON is not only INCOMPETENT, but also leaves a trail of CORRUPTION where ever his carpet banging practices take him– not to mention his extra-curricular EXPLOITS WITH WOMEN that make Elliot Spitzer look like a choir boy.

Michael watching from Canada   December 2nd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Why would anyone want to leave being Governor of New Mexico, get to live in Sante Fe and enjoy the southwest to return to D.C. Julie   December 2nd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Richardson knew what he was doing when he endorsed Obama and threw away any sense of loyalty towards the Clintons. In perspective, it's really all about ambition and self-serving politics, and Richardson acted like a true politician. On the other hand, there's something about loyalty and being a man of your word that exemplifies a great individual. In my opinion, Richardson brought himself down a few levels under the burden of being considered by many as a very disloyal man.

Rick   December 2nd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Laverne   December 2nd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Bill Richardson thought he should get SOS and that it was owed to him. I am sooo glad Obama is an independent thinker and put folk where he felt the best fit is. Even though he "may have more experience" than Hillary Clinton, there are so many other things he does not bring to the table. I think Hillary will be a more effective SOS than Richardson.

30-m-PA-Democrat-voted McCain   December 2nd, 2008 4:02 pm ET

bernj,

I actually sent Campell an e-mail congratulating her for a wonderful piece on Obama. Remember Obama is not the Messiah and deserves scrutiny as much as any other elected official (something that was lacking in this past campaign season). I honestly believe that if the media was at all neutral Obama wouldn't have made it past the primaries.

NY republican   December 2nd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Another Clinton-ite, another original idea from President – Elect of "change". I don't know much about Mr.Richardson but I'm thinking that even the Democrats didn't want Hillary, why they would want "the rest of the family baggage" is beyond me. I do hope you are all right about his resume. It seems good on the surface.
To Terri Ann – they leak this stuff to see what the reaction will be if they really do make this, the choice. If the reaction is bad it was only a "rumor" if the reaction is good it was "my greatest idea yet".

nmoverrichardson   December 2nd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Unfortunately Obama has not yet seen the true Richardson, and I do not mean the obvious backstabbing two faced Judas everyone was exposed to during the campaign, but the deceitful fork tongued snake many New Mexicans were naive enough to believe had their best interests at heart.

marcus   December 2nd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Mike   December 2nd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Guess you don't need experience in Commerce to be Obama's Secretary of Commerce. So far, only the Treasury and Defense nominations are people with the necessary qualifications; the rest have the same qualifications as the incoming President – i.e. none.

Kevin   December 2nd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

No opinion on Richardson. I still like Obama but I will agree with people who are confused by the "change" he promised. What has changed so far? And i don't want to hear that now we have democrats running the country instead of republicans, that's not what the change was about. When is Obama going to appoint some Republicans or more moderate candidates. This just looks like we're going back to one party ruling all parts of government. That is never good.

VoteRepublican   December 2nd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Is that all Bill Richardson got for supporting Obama? He deserves a better role in Obama cabinet than a commerce secretary!

Lance from Az   December 2nd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

I thought we elected an intelligent president.......

and then came the HRC nomination to the sec of state. Wasn't HRC's foreign policy positions the main thing Obama attacked her on. Then Napalitano for Homeland security is the biggest joke I have ever heard. this should be an affront to any latino that voted for Obama. Obama is giving a powerful position to someone who occupies the governers mansion in a city with the most racist sheriff in America.
A nice article was written about him in the washington post.
"Sheriff Joe Arpaio thinks he has found the answer to the problem of illegal immigrants in the United States. It's not the National Guard. And it's not amnesty. "Fuhgeddaboudit!" growled Arpaio, his Boston accent unbleached by the desert sun. The sheriff's solution: Lock 'em up." Too bad they didnt have the cajones to report on Sheriff Arpaio and his cronies favorite past time. They love going to predominately hispanic neighborhoods in the poorer sections of phoenix, picking up illegal hispanics, beating the tar out of them, and dropping them off on the outskirts of phoenix upwards of 50 miles from where they live. he does this to the undocumented workers that he catches but cant charge with an anti-smuggling law that he uses to lock up non-criminal immigrants. then my personal fave is Bill Richardson. I like the guy and he would have been perfect for Sec of State, but commerce is a joke.

But I guess he had to give HRC a spot and state is one of the very few that makes sense and then of course even though richardson would only be worthwhile at sec of state he had to give him a spot as political payback.

Shawn   December 2nd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Look at all the fighting going on in this blog, you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Grow up and lets worry about THINGS THAT MATTER!

Charlotte   December 2nd, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Bob from Down Under – you are a moron. If you think Richardson's appearance has anything to do with his qualifications, you are worse than a moron. So is everyone who is blasting Richardson based on their own warped perceptions trying to second guess 'what he wants." We New Mexicans know him far, far better than you people. He will be an excellent Commerce Secretary; he is a very capable and adept person who knows how to negotiate and who knows how to achieve things. And J.P. – you also are ignorant. I bet you've never even read Karl Marx.

Neutral   December 2nd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Richardson the Traitor is not suitable as a Janitor let alone the Commerce Secretary

Sara   December 2nd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

i guess the people of new mexico realize now that their governor didn't care about them at all and only used the position to get back into washington dc, this is the same man who didnt even know obama's tax plan a week before the election, sounds great to me, and another thing, richardson is definitely something new right? of course another person from the clinton years, anyone keeping track of the new faces of change?

Harold   December 2nd, 2008 3:36 pm ET

If the guy didn't want the job, he could turn it down. After all he is employed. So forget he didn't get the SOS position, hell he wanted to be president and didn't get that either.

It's a shame he wasn't nominated for Secretary of State. He's much more qualified then Senator Clinton.

I think he will do well in this role and hopefully transform it into a much more prominent position then in year's past when it's typically been glossed over and filled by a close friend or donor of the sitting president.

CC for better country direction!   December 2nd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Yay Bill!

whotoo   December 2nd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Richardson is qualified and able to. He's my kinder of leader. Good choice OB and JB. Real Mavericks.

Burly   December 2nd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I can't stand that man! He has no integrity, no talent, and absolutley no intellect. He has been a complete self-serving loser for his state and his country! That's the FIRST BIG CABINET MISTAKE for Obama!

Joel   December 2nd, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Wow Sandy you sound a little bitter. Hope you voted for Obama.

Tulsa   December 2nd, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Another worthless pick.....What kind of change is this, we all got taken for a ride. I know the next time I will be voting Republican

Sheryl   December 2nd, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Good choice!!!!!

Pittsburgh John   December 2nd, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Make him stop growing a mullet first.

JAS   December 2nd, 2008 2:59 pm ET

This is not about winners and losers. This is about pulling the
best people together to clean up the shi–y mess that Bush is leaving behind. For once, can we all pull together???

Mirta Rodriguez   December 2nd, 2008 2:59 pm ET

All I can say is "Bad Choice!"

NB Stewart   December 2nd, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Welcome aboard, Bill Richardson, we've been waiting for you!

dbacchus   December 2nd, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Yeah, Sandy, and Hillary got the job that SHE wanted :) )) Get a life, would you?

dbacchus   December 2nd, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Good! Congratulations Richardson!

Andrea/ CA   December 2nd, 2008 2:56 pm ET

I don't think anybody who get to serve in the new administration is a loser. Maybe they are a lot more mature then that. Congratulations to Bill Richardson and all the other Cabinet members. We need a strong, smart and diverse team. We are in a mess and we need them to get us out off it.

Terri Ann the Tex Ann ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~   December 2nd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Ya know, if I were Obama, I would find out who these "sources" are within his organization and smack them up beside the head. Why do some people think they have to "leak" this information to make themselves feel or look "important"? What happened to personal responsibility & integrity?

Ayanna   December 2nd, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Ba da ba ba ba......I'm lovin' it :)

Greed is not good   December 2nd, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Good call. Richardson is a solid choice.

Michael   December 2nd, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Not the post he wanting for sure, but he should do well!

Greg Hodges   December 2nd, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Barack Obama continues to impress me with the vision he has for reaching out to every segment of the American family. There is no doubt that the Latino vote was instrumental in Obama`s victory on Nov.4 ; but there is absolutely no doubt either that Bill Richardson is a man who has earned this post. He is one of the bright lights in the Democratic Party; and I have no doubt he will do an outstanding job as the Commerce Secretary. Lord knows what a huge responsibility it will be; but I trust Mr. Richardson will prove up to the task.

chuck   December 2nd, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Why is CNN giving updates on Barbara Bush? No one in their right mind cares anything about the Bushes. They are long gone.

frank   December 2nd, 2008 2:47 pm ET

I just don't trust this guy anymore.

J.P.   December 2nd, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Really? I'm amazed Obama-lama-ding-dong didn't dig up the dusty bones of Karl Marx and prop him up as Commerce Secretary. On a related note, liquidate your investments NOW while you still can.

bernj   December 2nd, 2008 2:43 pm ET

I guess we will have to hear another stupid comment from Campbell Brown about this too. Her tirade against Obama last night only shows that you can take the girl out of Mississippi but you can't take Mississippi out of the girl it seems. No bias no bull???? Yeah right.

Obama4me   December 2nd, 2008 2:43 pm ET

GREAT NEWS!! Let's hope he can make a difference in stimulating commerce in the mess of an economy that Bush let happen.

mikeice34   December 2nd, 2008 2:41 pm ET

i am glad we barack Obama as president because i believe he can make this country a better place less the wars but it is going to take time for him to straight everything up

Sandy   December 2nd, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Gee, I hope he gets to sit next to HRC at the cabinet mtgs. It should be really cozy since he threw her under the bus. Ironic that she got the job he wanted. He's the loser here.

lou   December 2nd, 2008 2:40 pm ET
