The latest debate in Washington: Does Richardson look better with or without a beard?
The latest debate in Washington: Does Richardson look better with or without a beard?

(CNN) – Gov. Bill Richardson showed up to his press conference with President-elect Barack Obama Wednesday morning without the beard he has been sporting since dropping out of the presidential race in January, sparking his new boss to tell reporters he is "deeply disappointed with the loss of the beard."

"I'm going to answer this question about the beard," said Obama, when Richardson was asked where the facial hair went. "I think it was a mistake for him to get rid of it. I thought that whole Western, rugged look was really working for him.

"For some reason, maybe because it was scratchy when he kissed his wife, he was forced to get rid of it.," Obama continued as his nominee for commerce secretary smiled broadly. "But we're deeply disappointed with the loss of the beard."

Obama didn't let Richardson answer the question, but the New Mexico governor told Esquire Magazine in an interview posted online Wednesday that "After the campaign, I grew a beard as a rebellion against those consultants who told me I had to comb my hair, shave, lose weight. I said, You know, I’m gonna do what I want now. That was a good feeling."

I like how both Obama and Richardson have a sense of humor. What a refreshing change.

Ambrose Smith, Borrego Springs, California   December 3rd, 2008 8:11 pm ET

Obama was joking. Pretending it was a huge deal. Having fun. Don't youy get it?

Like when he said that getting a puppy for the White House was TOP NATIONAL PRIORITY!!

Obama is a cool cat.

A transition team loaded with lobbyists, and a cabinet loaded with entrenched Washington politicians…yep, change you can believe in.

I'm laughing as only a political junkie can…this is the fun stuff!

It seems I'm not the only smart woman out here who thought the bearded Richardson was pretty hot stuff! ;)

No, it's not hard news, but who cares? Isn't it time we all had a laugh?

gflan   December 3rd, 2008 7:56 pm ET

Usually I don't care one way or the other about a beard (my husband has one) usually it comes in grayer and makes a man look older than he really is, but on Bill Richardson, I thought he looked GREAT! A little like a sexy Luciano Pavarotti

Pepou   December 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

I was also disappointed when Palin shaved her mustache ….

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   December 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

I am soooo glad Richardson shaved the dang thing off.

He looked exactly like a terrorist.

And yes, those things are miserable for women who want to "get up close and personal."

of all the (my opinion) two faced people president elect obama selected.bill richardson is at the top of my list…. back stabbing his friends after sitting with them on superbowl sunday. then saying he is only interested in staying governor and has no plans with the president elects cabinet positions…liar liar(in my opinion). at least the president can watch the snake(in my opinion) more closely…one thing bill richardson cares about is his political future—no matter what—Hillery Clinton…..WATCH YOUR BACK….

PJP   December 3rd, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Yea ME! Must be a very slow day in the news that CNN had to report on something that Obama said that had nothing to do with being president! This is probably what we have to look forward to in the next few years.

Sarah TX   December 3rd, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Lighten up Judy Mrs.PhD. It's a JOKE-you know, those things ppl say when they're not being serious.

Jmatthews   December 3rd, 2008 7:43 pm ET

I had to smile that this could be a subject of comments – but I'll just add that he looks a little more formidable now, as though he just stepped right out of "The Sopranos". Frankly, he was far more handsome when he had it, and his face looked more balanced with the beard – hope he brings it back!

(Could it be he thinks he'll be taken more seriously with it gone?)

Paul Lennon   December 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

I think he's trying to look like he's lost weight.
But he hasn't.

Fluffy Shoes   December 3rd, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Judy B. Rosener Ph,D.; Ro   December 3rd, 2008 7:17 pm ET

I'm glad he shaved…he looked terrible with the beard. Are we giubg back to the 60's where mess is cool?

Not sure why Obama said what he did….should have not said anything.

Long time Democrat.

Phil from Phoenix   December 3rd, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Dion from Montgomery   December 3rd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Do not judge a book by the cover. I think he looks good with or without it. I just hope he does not rebel too much and add more weight (Not that anything is wrong with it), I just think he will live longer with shedding the weights off, instead of putting it on!

BS VA   December 3rd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

The beard gave his face a purpose and a direction. Now, he looks like a sad man.

Which way does he look more like Brutus?   December 3rd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Richardson is the Brutus of the 21st century and Bill and Hillary won't forget it. Look for that tandem to bury Richardson sometime over the next four years.

Cheese and Whine   December 3rd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Well, the beard showed where one chin ended and the next one began.

Markster   December 3rd, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Beard definetly! He looked like a nice jolly guy with the beard. Now he looks a bit less jolly.

Martin from Germany   December 3rd, 2008 6:13 pm ET

A president-elect with a sense of humor! And a dry wit! A guy who can either think on his feet or is actually prepared when meeting the press. AND gives them a run for their money, either way. What a fresh, new wind is blowing across America!

BrumleyGap   December 3rd, 2008 6:13 pm ET

With all the Lincoln comparisons, perhaps Obama should grow the beard. As little Grace Bedell would say, he "would be much improved in appearance, provided [he] would cultivate whiskers."

Howard Roark   December 3rd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

A transition team loaded with lobbyists, and a cabinet loaded with entrenched Washington politicians…yep, change you can believe in.

Pat Gray   December 3rd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Wolf & Lou – I'm getting tired of your negative comments and your provocative questions to the public that elicit negative responses….we are in a new time with new hope and if we have a collective vision, you two seem to be doing everything you can to put doubt and fear in the minds and hearts of hopeful Americans….lay off…get on the bandwagon of change and hope..we need it desperately.

Kathleen   December 3rd, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Like Riker, he's much better WITH the beard.

Swashbuckle-y.

Still, CNN, this is really more of a celeb story than actual News, but thanks for trying.

Austin   December 3rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Wow is this news? Is this more important than the terror attacks in Mumbai? This obviously is a complete waste of time. Who cares if he shaved his beard or not. What is this country coming to?

as a latina voter I'm glad he has a latino there and he should bring more but to answer the question i agree with this person that said:

SENATUS POPOLUSQUE ROMANUS December 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

I believe Richardson ought to worry about the SEVERAL extra pounds he is accumulating rather than shaving his beard………….

It doesnt matter.

Noel Teku   December 3rd, 2008 5:47 pm ET

He needs it back, for Christmas. He looks more jovial with a beard.

JA from ABQ   December 3rd, 2008 5:38 pm ET

I think Richardson will make a great Sec of Commerce and would have made a better Sec of State. Not to be…

We'll have to wait and watch how many Latinos make this cabinet or we'll need to re-eval and see if we need to use the power of our vote to swing the GOP way.

BTW – I like the beard!!!

Buzz Daly   December 3rd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Whoa! He's got more Chins than the San Francisco telephone directory

did you notice he turned orange in the after picture? What after-shave did you use, Bill?

Stephen   December 3rd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

He should keep the beard. It hides the neck fat. But Richardson is still awesome and he'll be a good commerce secretary, although I still feel he's best suited for secretary of state.

frankie   December 3rd, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Oh well I guess I will miss the beard. I would be disappointed too, I really think he looks better with the on.

With the beard on, I thought he looked more like our Governor Napalitano. And Gov. Rendell does owe Janet an apology for Janet does have a life here. One of ignoring the people of her state when it comes to handing the illegal and crime issues, creating the worst deficit in this state history and unlike Sara Palin who looks hot, Janet does look like a pit bull wearing lip stick.

Most of you people are absolutly horrible. Most of you make fun of his weight on here? I thought you wanted the best man for the job? Not the best looking for the job. Guess what, that's why Democrats won't succeed. They believe in too perfect a world. I voted for Obama because he was best for the job, but overall Dems make me sick.

deb0155   December 3rd, 2008 5:14 pm ET

I cannot believe that with the United States in a recession, our homeless, starving, uneducated, bail outs, and absolutely no way out of this mess for a very long time that Bill Richardson's "beardlessness" would be of any news at all. Quite frankly, he needs to lose some weight and make a role model of himself.

Steve, Columbia SC   December 3rd, 2008 5:14 pm ET

He should keep the beard, it hides his triple chin so much better.

Elaine   December 3rd, 2008 5:11 pm ET

I think Obama should let his beard grow and see how it looks.

Mark   December 3rd, 2008 5:07 pm ET

I am so proud of us as a people. After electing an incompetent individual two times in a row, to see the American people elect someone who is so eloquent, smart and loving of his country and family as we know it, I am really proud of us as a people.

Obama's cabinet is the best of the best in America. No party lines, just competent, able, people. I hear some republicans trying to still stick to their divisive language and behavior like Sen. Chamblis, and it is truly shameful. Eight years of republican administration has proven a disaster for us as a people…..We are one people. I pray all goes well for President Obama who is being left with a real mess to deal with.

Keep the beard, lose the weight. I hear Obama recommends salmon, rice and broccoli for supper at night, and a game of basketball every a.m. Of course, we couldn't all do this without crashing the salmon population; but I don't think there is a broccoli shortage.

Barbara Askew   December 3rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

I agree with President-elect Obama: I am disappointed that Bill Richardson shaved off the beard. It added Lincoln-like distinction.

Ishpeck   December 3rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

I can see how this is critical to the future of the country.

geecee827   December 3rd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Richardson is a handsome man. He isn't exactly a spring chicken after all. Give him a break. And Judas? Why, because he supported Obama over Hillary? Like you guys care he didn't support Hillary even though he was in her husband's cabinet. Can't someone use their judgment now and then and not have to be loyal to a fault. Bush's guys were "loyal" and look what a mess his administration turned out to be. No one tried to buck him except Powell – and he quit!

Cato   December 3rd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

You think Obama was disappointed today, wait until he sees him sloppy drunk. I saw Bill R. in a well known DC restaurant when he was between jobs with the Clinton administration. He was so intoxicated at about 2:30 pm that he had to be literally carried out of the restaurant by three security agents, not a pretty sight for a public servant..

As a long time supporter and early champion of Governor Richardson's campaign I had hoped to have a bearded Richardson as Secretary of State. Now we have a naked faced Richardson as secy of Commerce and an equally naked faced Hillary Clinton as secy of State. Can't win them all I guess.

I'm from Santa Fe, New Mexico and most men's beards look just great; they know how to trim it to look appealing. But with Billy Richardson it’s not a beard at all, it looks like a stepped on scrub pad pasted on his face! I think that’s why he took it off too many New Mexicans were complaining about it!

Obama the great!!!   December 3rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Everything he does is great!
What an awesome show of personality!
I love this man!
You couldn't of written a better comment if you took years and it just rolled right off his lips as if it was nothing!!!
He's so magnificent!!!

Roo   December 3rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Aw, say it ain't so, Bill! Why is the great and noble beard so marginalized in American public life? Men (especially heavy ones like Richardson) look so silly and incomplete with smooth faces. What a shame!

KB   December 3rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Why is this news?

Justin   December 3rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Who really cares? I mean it's as if CNN has not gotten enough of kissing up to Barack yet. I can't wait until he has to implement some polices that will surely upset all his worshippers!

Max in Phoenix, AZ   December 3rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

The beard shouldn't be a main page story… it's not going to determine how he does his job. He was appointed because of his knowledge on the issues and qualifications and I feel he's a good fit for the position. As far as the beard goes, I think he looked better with it.

Carol   December 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

So, he rebels if he does not get his way. Says volumns about his character.

Pamela , NYC / ATL   December 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Richardson looks better with a beard.

jrzgrlxit8a   December 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I agree – I loved the beard!

usualone   December 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

What a pleasant surprise to find out the "hook" only brought us in to read the article and find out the men both do have a sense of humor. We need this in these times with everyone being so cynical. With a sense of humor one does survive — even when the going gets tough. I just saw the headline that people want the Big 3 to fail. What about all the little people who earn livings because of the Big 3? People are showing their cut-throat approach to other human beings. I guess they want these guys to be dour all the time. We need levity to survive.

J   December 3rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

I think there are whole a lot of issues than beard that deserve a front page news report on cnn.

OA, Houston, TX   December 3rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

This headline is VERY, VVVVVEEEEERRRRRYYYYY MISLEADING!!!!!

anon   December 3rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

+1 for the beard. It really suits him.

sam   December 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

that is upsetting. he does in fact look much better w/ the beard.

Larry Isard   December 3rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

go for the beard

Sian   December 3rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

I too am disappointed.

James in Utah   December 3rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

I like the look better with the beard. Of course, news is slow today, hence the story on the beard.

daune   December 3rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

I Like bill richardson with or without a beard , he is a good man with a great sence of humor ,wildly ambitious.so mr secretary of commerce go make us all proud,

Melissa   December 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I am amazed at how many people are too stupid to understand SARCASM and have no senses of humor.

Truly, that is what is wrong with America. *firm nod*

Susan   December 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

At least Richardson is on the cabinet at all, beard or no beard. (I liked the beard). I'm sort of concerned over some of the hawkish types of people Obama is bending over backwards to put around him..(gulp). And, as Michael Moore said not long ago in his newsletter, the Republicans seem to be stealing money out of the cookie jar on their way out. Soo, there may not be money for the programs that Democrats want to implicate for the good of our country. Fingers crossed.

Rosie   December 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I agree with the majority–the beard was great! What a hunk. However there is the saying looks are are only skin deep and its what's inside that counts.

Haz   December 3rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Pro Beard! check out the United States Beard Congress on facebook!
OMG! Keep the beard!

Mrivera   December 3rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

GROW THE BEARD!!!

G Kaur   December 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

I agree with Mr. Obama. Bill, you looked better with the beard. Please grow it back. Besides, it hid your double chin.

Yes, you should consider losing weight though, for your health's sake.

GK, Atlanta, GA

John   December 3rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

EVERYTHING about Bill Richardson disappoints me!!!

Goodbye CNN   December 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

So the link is titled "Obama "disappointed" with Richardson" and then you post some idiotic crap about Obama being disappointed he shaved his beard? I'll be pointing my browser to anywhere BUT CNN.com from here on out due to this kind of idiocy.

Anon   December 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

To be honest, how about he looks ugly both ways?

Democrat to the bone   December 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I'm disappointed too lol

Get over it   December 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

It makes him look older and uglier that he was before.

Mark from Houston   December 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

For those who did not like the news: com'on, loosen up!

Gene   December 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

And here I thought this was a real story.. that Richardson turned down the post offered to him. :)

Welcome aboard Bill.

Steve in Austin, TX   December 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Last weekend I trimmed about 4 inches off my goatee, and now I'm dissapointed with myself.

Ned   December 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

The beard hid his double chin. Should have kept it.

Darrell   December 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Good choice Gov. Richardson has a great gift about him in what ever he does for the United States of America. He is a true hero for all to follow he has held so many positon in the Government and Elective Offices and succeeds in each one, GOOD CHOICE!

Karen - Missouri   December 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

I liked the beard and the more relaxed "rugged" look. I hope he lets the beard grow out again.

Paula Alejo   December 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

I agree, I think the beard made him look sexy.

Harry   December 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

THIS IS NEWS, WHY???

David   December 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Oh man, did any Republicans accuse him of being a Muslim for leaving a beard for so long?

He looked good with the beard. Bring it back!

Former Lifelong Republican supporting Obama, Columbia, TN   December 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Funny…but to be honest, I kinda liked the beard on Richardson. It gave him more character.

Al in South Carolina   December 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Don't look now but Richardson was mediocre at best as the Secretary of Energy under Clinton. Don't expect a lot from him at Commerce.

VB Lincoln Park NJ   December 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

I have a beard.

Hey, Bill, GROW IT BACK!!!!!!

wiiliam   December 3rd, 2008 4:08 pm ET

job performance! job performance! job performance! really don't care about the big ego trip everyone seems to be on except for the average lucky to have a job american.

Tom in NM   December 3rd, 2008 4:08 pm ET

good riddance from NM. Maybe this megalomanic can get pre-signed undated letters of resignation from all the employees at commerce. since he's no longer running for prez it's nice to see him pork out again — oh that's right he wants to make obesity a disease rather than an inability to NOT stuff your fat face.

tony p.   December 3rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Looks like a WWE wrestler with the beard … Looks like a sumo wrestler without it. Either way he's set to kick butt!!!

Nia Hussein- Phoenix, AZ   December 3rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

ummm no Bill…you are going to have to grow that beard back ASAP!!! That was apart of the appeal…DAH!!

...really CNN?   December 3rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Are you serious? On the front page you have a link to an article with the link titled, "Obama 'deeply disappointed' in Richardson" and you link it to this? Really? There's so little happening in the world that you're saying this is front page worthy? This is ridiculous.

John   December 3rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

He looked like a cute bear with it.

Smart move   December 3rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Keeping Gates on was a very strategic move while power transitions. Whenever this many people come and go at the same time it puts us in a potentially dangerous spot. Keeping the national defense guy around is brilliant. And if for whatever reason he doesn't work out, he can be replaced in a year or whatever.

lucy   December 3rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Richardson looks better with the beard. Without it, his obesity really shows.

M. John Powell   December 3rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Mr. Richardson, I like the beard better. I would suggest that you grow it back as soon as possible.

lilacs   December 3rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

good to see some humor in these tough time. glad to see a president that has a real sense of humor but also knows when to be serious.

He should have kept it, it almost hides his extra chins.

Blossum   December 3rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

That beard was false! It fell off in his soup!

Kyle   December 3rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Nooooo, you shouldn't have shaved the beard! I'm sick of all these politicians with their hair slicked back and teeth 20 shades whiter than normal. We want the beard! We want the beard!

Denise Bolin   December 3rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

That's most definitely the change we need – COMPETENCE

Jesse   December 3rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Does this story really merit this site?

Is this really note worthy? I am the one that is disappionted.

I clicked on the story and I becamse furious at the big waste of time.

I guess I am going to have to look to "google news" from now on.

This truely sad….

Bush made Richardson shave his beard. It's BUSH'S fault. Cheney is responsible for Darfur.

Obama '08

Jay   December 3rd, 2008 4:02 pm ET

LOL Funny!

Denise Bolin   December 3rd, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Obama has most definitely kept his promise – he's placing very qualified and intelligent people at all cabinet posts – it's the change we need – COMPETENCE.

For those that criticize at every opportunity – remember this is YOUR President, too and that you should respect his judgment and give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise. This is a brilliant and inspirational leader who, if you can be objective, will prove to the world how great our nation can be AGAIN.

Matt   December 3rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

OH NO! This unabashed sexism is surely going to irk Campbell Brown. I mean no one would make such a comment to a female politician.

Nannie Bouroughs   December 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

The loss of the beard os just the start of things that Mr. Obama is going to be disappointed in with Richardson… wait for it…

Babe   December 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

I too vote for the beard! Grow it back ! Another point in its favor is that it hides a multitude of sins, such as the double chin.

skh   December 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

I really liked the beard. It made Bill Richardson look much professional and handsome. Please grow it back.

The Gloom sqaud   December 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Looks like the gloom squad is out, trying to make funny comments seem like something bad. And for the banana republic guy, you might be onto something. Our nation peaked as a superpower under Clinton, and Bush ushered in our decline. The numbers do not lie. We jumped the shark early under Bush, it didn't have to happen. Here's hoping Obama can fix the mess that the Texas man left us.

Matthieu   December 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Bill Richardson looks better with the beard, it doesn't make his face seem to have any extra skin.

aynes54   December 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

UGHHHHH…another Clintonite with Richardson…..I am deeply disappointed in Obama…..There is NO fresh faces in his cabinet. Same old same old…..What happened to his campaign on "change"????

YOU ARE NOT A JUDAS IF YOU WISE UP AND GO WITH THE DEMOCRATS…IT IS AN AWAKENING!

Ardra-Atlanta   December 3rd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Our new President is so cool! I think it is all very funny… The beard was cool but he does look more professional without it and I heard some anaylst/pundints talking about him so badly I felt bad so for that reason I am glad that he shaved!

NY Republican   December 3rd, 2008 3:51 pm ET

He does look better with the beard. See at least one of us "haters" can agree with the new Prez.

A Woman In California For Obama   December 3rd, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I like men in beards. However, I would not want to kiss him. It looks great though-makes him look years younger.

karen-phoenix   December 3rd, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Richardson would have great as Sec of State BUT at this very critical point in American history Commerce is just as important if not more so!!! Richardson will be out and about the entire world building business for America, especially redoing the mess that has been created in South America!!! We NEED South America as an ally–not an enemy!!! Richardson also knows how very important it is to rebuild American commerce re: solar, wind, biofuels etc.!! Another great job done well by Obama and staff!!!! God Bless you all!!! And God Bless America!!

Sandy   December 3rd, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Much, better looking with the beard!

brian   December 3rd, 2008 3:51 pm ET

nice hook CNN.
very clever journalism.
i am not being sarcastic.
that is the way you draw someone in.

everyone should write to Richardson and tell him yes or no.

my vote is yes and i agree with Obama for once.

Kurt Guseman   December 3rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Dude: A big mistake, you looked GOOD with the beard…

Voter08   December 3rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

This is news? CNN really wasted time and space for this topic. They even wasted or misled the people with the headline.

Jerks!

P. Mathew   December 3rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

I guess it's been a quiet day in the world of politics. No exciting news eh?

With the whole beard thing, I'm waiting for Richardson to talk about global warming…he might even make a movie about it….or even win a Nobel prize. Then people would take him so serial. :|

george   December 3rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

I Guess that speaks to the overall intelligence and vision that our President Elect possesses…WHO CARES…whether any of the new Cabinet Member has a BEARD OR NOT….Does that make him a more effective Cabinet Post member…I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT.

xys   December 3rd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Yes he looks better with a beard!!!!!!!

Bill Bailey   December 3rd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

This guy's got more chins than a chinese phonebook!

Daniel from El Paso TX   December 3rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Must have been the reason Hillary got the Secratary of State job over him. She definately looks more manly than Richardson with his beard shaved off….

4 more years   December 3rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Ok, please President Elect, do not give us four more years of Bush.

Richardson's beard really isn't important. By you trying to be cute and funny, you sound as bad as Bush does when he tries to be.

We really don't need that. And frankly, you're not very funny.

P.S. Another thing you do like Bush: if you don't have a written speech in front of you, every other word is "uh". Doesn't show well for a Harvard grad.

ALAG76   December 3rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Seriously? Who cares? I can't believe I wasted time clicking on the link "Obama 'deeply disappointed' Richardson shaved beard" to find this out. This is what CNN calls news worthy?

Thebe   December 3rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

He's cute, but cuter with the beard.

Randy   December 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

I like the beard.

I think it makes him looked more distinguished. He's a good man for
the post and I wish him sucess with his new career.

Bring back the beard BIll.

In the middle of all this crisis, such type of comment from a President-elect is not exactly what we're looking forward to listening to, Mr. Obama!

Wow CNN. What's with the 'hate America' sentiment that is going on. Your headlines seem to be geared towards anti-Americanism.

Searching for non-biased media. Any suggestions?

wayne   December 3rd, 2008 3:44 pm ET

grow it back to cover the fat face he has

Bobby   December 3rd, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Now, now. CNN does invent lots of news, but this is all in good fun. There is a fine line between "stories" that aren't actually of any value or news and those that are not really stories but make for a good laugh upon the endless amounts of negative news we hear everyday.

Kristina   December 3rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

I liked the beard. It made him look youthful and spry. I hope he grows it back!

Republican in VA   December 3rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

the heart of the matter   December 3rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

grow it back!!

Linda Walkingshaw   December 3rd, 2008 3:42 pm ET

I prefer the beard too.

Everybody in the administration of government doesn't have to look like an IBM clone. We, of the 60s generation, appreciate and understand individualism, and are not uncomfortable with it.

Please, grow back the beard! You are ever so sexy and handsome with same.

Debra   December 3rd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

So this is the kind of think the president-elect has on his mind?
Great, just great.

FREEMAN   December 3rd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

It's truly amazing what a beard can do to someones looks. Governor Richardson looks almost handsome with it.

THANK YOU BARACK OBAMA FOR FIGHTING BEARD INTOLERANCE IN THIS COUNTRY!!

Michael in San Diego   December 3rd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Shame on you CNN… I had to read this story to find out why Obama was so disappointed in his newest appointee and I find out that the comment was made in jest. Please change the header for these kinds of stories so they don't confuse and distract those of us looking for "real" news stories to read.

Pat McCormack   December 3rd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

I liked the beard (the fact that I wear one is irrelevant), Richardson looks better and younger sporting that facial hair.

deb in Colo   December 3rd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

He looks better with the beard…he should have kept it.

Harry A. Haney   December 3rd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Hey LA-LA-LAND,

Our great nation has already been reduced to a banana republic much like Chavez' Venezuela. Barrack Obama will be trying to build it back up to the great country that it once was before Bush/Cheney and the republicans drove it into the ground. Say what you will. Anything is better than the current republican administration.

Lorraine Robinson   December 3rd, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Richardson is handsome, lovable, courteous intelligent and polite.
He will make a wonderful commerce Secretary that the US will be proud.

He appears to have a pleasant disposition and to be easy going. He is just a lovable teddy bear.

I do prefer the beard on him though.

Meg from Colorado   December 3rd, 2008 3:40 pm ET

I agree with Senator Obama that Bill Richardson looked better with his beard. It gave him a more relaxed and youthful appearance. Without his beard he looks old and grumpy. Let it grow again, Bill!

PSU Student   December 3rd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Don't mean to mean to Governor Richardson, really like the guy and think his nomination for Commerce Secretary is a great choice, but he should have kept the beard. It looks like he has a fanny pack strapped around his neck.

Emmanuel   December 3rd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

OB1 has spoken and i agree with him Bill should have kept the beard. Stop calling him Judas all you PUMAS.

Mary   December 3rd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

A reporter asked a question, Obama answered. It was TIC, a joke. Of course there are more pressing issues, but are we not allowed a moment of brevity? If we dwell on the doom and gloom that is our economic situation, we'll all go crazy.

Derek Thomas   December 3rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Just yesterday I was thinking how I was done with this network due its irresponsible coverage of the attacks in Mumbai. Not only was it a vulger dispaly of carnage, but many believe you were irresponsible in disclosing the whereabouts of certain victims.

And now, to put up a headline that says Obama is disappointed in Richardson….. Its disgusting, misleading and completely irrelevant.

Tabloid journalism is not the direction I would like to see any network head unto. Good riddance!

Deborah   December 3rd, 2008 3:37 pm ET

I vote for the beard, too. Without it, he looks like Fred Flintstone.

ben   December 3rd, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Beard or no beard. Your choice Mr. Secretary of Commerce to be. Either way, I think you'll do a great job.

Shar   December 3rd, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I don't understand why you put such misleading headlines on your home page that reference the ticker. It seems that CNN has been doing this a lot lately and I wish they would get back to the accurate news source they used to be!

Christine   December 3rd, 2008 3:33 pm ET

The beard gives him a handsome, rugged look! No baby-face for this girl!

Mike   December 3rd, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Because of its proven history of working well with Gov. Richardson, the president-elect has nominated Richardson's beard for Secretary Of Energy.

Linda   December 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Gary, Georgia   December 3rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Jesus H. Christ! With all that is going on in our country,i.e. wall street meltdown, auto companies about to fail,CNN considers whether or n ot some guy in Obama's cabinet has a beard to be newsworthy? If I wanted to read that kind of crap, I'd pick up the national Inquirer!!

S.M   December 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

I liked the beard as well. But what matters is Richardson doing the job to the best of his ability.

Chipster   December 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Wow, there are some really nasty and personal comments here about the man's appearance. I wonder how beautiful the people are who are so critical of Richardson's personal appearance. Beauty, which is completely subjective, is only skin deep but ugly goes clear to the bone. There are some really ugly people on this blog, regardless of how they look. Is it really necessary to be so mean about something so frivolous and irrelevant?

Donna - Los Angeles   December 3rd, 2008 3:28 pm ET

RIDICULOUS

Why don't you give us news rather than infotainment? My God, CNN is becoming Fox. Have you no standards?

Voter   December 3rd, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Richardson spent a lot of time trying to look "Hispanic" because it got him some votes and more attention. He wanted a job, any job, so he decided to look as Hispanic as possible.

He's so fat he looks gross, and the lack of beard reveals the heavy layers of fat lolling and shifting under his chin.

"Tubby" had best drop at least 100 pounds, or he'll wreck every photo op and drop dead like Tim Russert and so many other obese men.

Poor Hillary has to look at this gob of fat for 4 years.

What are you joking or are you an idiot! Obama was making a joke and implementing laughter into press conference.

You're probably one of those people who finds something to dislike/ distrust about Obama no matter what he does. Good Grief!

Scott   December 3rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I think it's great that Obama has the time to make Comments about things like this but doesn't take the time to answer Genuine questions from the Media…

It's just awesome that people care more about what dog his kids choose than the economy, and he cares more about one of his cabinet members beards than a nuclear armed Iran in the first term of his presidency…

President Elect Obama and Commerce Secretary Richadson are going to be great together. I love them both.

Mikey   December 3rd, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I really thought Richardson would get something better than the Commerce job. Oh well…

Watch out for the nasty Repubs…rumor has it that they have a site out there that is a smear machine – but this one is supposed to give codes out to GOP operatives. Can't remember what it's called though. Any help???

Melissa, NC   December 3rd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Hi! I saw the press conference and truly 'laughed out loud' when Obama answered the question about Bill's 'beard'. It's nice to see a little humor these days! Glad to see that Obama and Richardson have a sense of humor. And, Bill…you look great with or without the beard!

M   December 3rd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

CNN is silly for the title of this article. Sensational journalism to a new level.

BGL   December 3rd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I like him with the beard. But, I have to complain a little. The headline on the main page said Obama was disappointed with Richardson. I'm like, 'Don't tell me he said no to the job'. But, nooooo! It's about his beard! That's called 'bait n' switch'!

Leah from FL   December 3rd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

zach   December 3rd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

do not advertise this story as obama "dissapointed" in richardson – looking for a hook for people to click the link. for many who read headlines, they are getting false news. don't stoop down to that cnn

people its ok to laugh:) Its unhuman to think ever now than Obama its allowed to tell a joke or two.

T.G.   December 3rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I understand that Bill Richardson had to shave his beard to look clean and presentable after bring nominated as Secretary of Commerce, but I feel that he could at least keep the goatee.

W8nting_A_ChnG   December 3rd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I think we're missing the point here: Its not about the beard being shaved, who cares, but the type of character Obama is by pointing it [the beard] out. Good move. I think Obama puts personality in being the new Prez. and not just making it seem so "faux pas" to have character, while being the Command and Chief. We all noticed subtile things, but having someone who can be just as normal as one of the American people is awesome.

Karl   December 3rd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

We are disappointed in Gates as Secty of Defense and Obama backpedaling on his campaign promises……..

Reese from NC   December 3rd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

I'm with Obama on this one. I really liked the beard on Richardson. Let it grow back, please!!!

G   December 3rd, 2008 3:18 pm ET

I think its funny but for a minute there I thought he rejected the offer Obama made to be his commerce secretary.

LA-LA LAND   December 3rd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Yeah, cool dude Obama, so hip, wow man, awesome! (This is what we have now in the respectable office of the Presidency of the United States of America! By the time Barry is done with his little ego-boosting adventure, our great nation will be reduced to a banana republic much like Chavez' Venezuela.

Janice Illinois   December 3rd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

With or with out the beard, your still able to see the shifty eyes of Judas. When you are so eager to stab the backs of the people who made you, the only thing left is to say once a traitor always a traitor!!

T. G.   December 3rd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Inunderstand that Bill Richardson had to shave his beard since he got nominated for the commerce secretary position in order to look presentable, but he could at least keep the goatee.

B. Riley Hanson   December 3rd, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Oh my god, me too! My girlfriend and I were just discussing this. Richardson's beard gave him such a distinguished look….

Why is it an expectation of American politicians (and businessman alike) that their faces be clean shaven?

Beards 2012!

justin   December 3rd, 2008 3:16 pm ET

any other serious issues to report? richardson can color in a beard with a marker or paint if nobamas really attracted to the beard.

Bill from Grande Prairie, AB   December 3rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I didn't know of Bill Richardson until he campaigned to be nominated as a presidential candidate. The first time I viewed him he had a beard. I never cared to grow a beard myself but it looks good on some people and it looked good on Bill Richardson. However if it actually is scratchy for his wife when they kiss, then the beard sould stay off. I'm pleased that Bill is in Obama' cabinet.

Godluvr   December 3rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Mr. President-E,

I agree!

Please order Gov. Richardson to grow a new beard immediately!

Still loving the whole process – This is one smart President we have in these United States of America now!

Critic Beware: there's some crow waiting outside your door!

Jose   December 3rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Alan   December 3rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Virginia December 3rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

"And this is news??? Who cares–he is just another Dem who will be up there running things in the "good ol' boys' club" they call change……"

Virginia, Virginia, Virginia — who would you recommend President-Elect Obama put on his cabinet? The bowling league? Billiards buddies? The CHANGE you refer to is happening — it's an ATTITUDE change, starting with a president-elect who is carefully thinking through and mapping out an INTELLIGENT plan and already putting his team together so he can start working us through this gigantic mess the moment he hits the White House.

But — I have you pegged. When Obama zigs, you'll feel he should have "zagged." When he "zags" you'll ask why on earth didn't he "zig?" It won't matter to you so…guess you'll just have to try again NEXT election.

Sorry but the majority ruled. You lost. Get over it. And get WITH the program or please stand out of the way so we can try and get this horrific eight-year nightmare mopped up.

Mark in Arizona   December 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Me too! I was hoping it might help hairy guys make a comeback.

Marcia   December 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

I think it's a bit racist, actually, to refer to Richardson as fat and repulsive. The endomorph body type is common among people with his ethnic heritage and at his time of life being built like, well, Obama, for example, would be both unnatural and impossible for him. He's a handsome man in late middle age. Get off his case!

I'm glad he's in the cabinet, and I think commerce is a smart choice for subtle reasons. I am starting to see a very complex and long-range chess gambit in the Obama appointments.

Samilton   December 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Keep the beard and lose some weight. I think a beard adds (positive) to the look of most men.

Former republican army wife   December 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

How is Richardson Judas? He owed the Clintons nothing but his friendship, and that, he still gives them. People have a right to vote for anyone they feel like voting for. You people need to grow up!!! Richardson is a grown man, and he can make his own decisions.

As far as the beard, I liked it. Thought he looked a little rugged, and less of a typical politician.

Bill, Albany, Georgia   December 3rd, 2008 3:09 pm ET

As Sec of Commerce he should have no trouble doing business with China, he has more chins than they do………

Ken in Dallas   December 3rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Well, Bill, you've stepped in it now.

Since you went ahead and shaved, I guess the next concession to conformity has to be to cut five pounds… and five… and five… until you can stand those B-ball meetings with the Chief. I truly wish you success if you take that challenge up.

Karen, Arkansas   December 3rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Wow CNN what news! I had read the headline "Obama Deeply Disapointed in Richardson." I thought the man had turned down the post Obama had offered him. Sheesh, CNN, you are turning Tabloid!

Norm   December 3rd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

wow cnn, this is so pathetic, you're headline for this story is "obama deeply dissapointed with richardson" and all it is is his stupid beard, way to sell a worthless story.

Thomas/Washington State   December 3rd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

I think Obama and Richardson should both grow beards or goatees. Look at some of the presidents of the past, when facial hair was the norm. Not the Castro jungle militant look, but a nicely trimmed goatee will definitely add character and a presence to Obama's looks. Just like it did for another politician from Illinois 150 years ago..

Bryan   December 3rd, 2008 3:06 pm ET

It must be a lot of work shaving that beard…..it's on 10 chins!!!!!

Stan   December 3rd, 2008 3:06 pm ET

This is probably the only "change" we'll see…OH WAIT—— "off the cliff in the next 48″ that's another "change"..

Readyfor2009   December 3rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

The headline for this article was very misleading. The headline should have indicated that it was a humorous comment, something like "Obama Teases Richardson About Beard" rather than making it sound like there was some kind of falling out or problem between them. Yes, the "deeply disappointed" is a quote, but context is important here! One shouldn't have to read the article to realize it was a lighthearted moment.

Singh   December 3rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

I LIKED THE BEARD!

Daniel   December 3rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

How did Richardson shave?

Did he take the knife out of Hillary's back and use it?

ChicagoSuz   December 3rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

I like the beard, as well.

Chris   December 3rd, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Viet Vet   December 3rd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

I concur- -lose the weight

hugh ~ california   December 3rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

I agree with Senatus Romanus. Richardson needs to focus on lowering his cholesterol, instead of lowering the length of his facial hair. He needs to change his diet, otherwise he'll be making frequent doctor visits with that good health coverage he has. Gov. Richardson please work hard and don't let us down, but Romulus don't ream us. He'll do a good job if he stays healthy.

Chris   December 3rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

I don't know why he shaved it. He definitely looked cooler with it.

Kal Ven   December 3rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Who cares whether Bill Richardson sports a beard or not? He should learn the habit of answering questions straight. During the democratic presidential debates, Richardson's way of answering questions was really boring. Anyway, Secretary of Commerce is a low profile job that requires very low interaction with press. Hope he does well.

Jim   December 3rd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Dear No Hillary = No Obama and all others alike

Get over yourselves. The country has spoken and Hillary is in support as the next secretary of state. I can not imagine a more suitable way of Hillary showing her support for the President elect. If you can not get over selves leave the country you are doing no one any good.

Obama is da man! The 18 million cracks seemd to have been sealed up for good!

Chris   December 3rd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Bill Richardson is indeed a handsome guy. And the beard really brought out the Latino in him. Bet he'll grow it back. And, ya gotta give credit to the pres-elect. He's got a great sense of humor and a quick wit.. Kinda brings back memories of those great JFK news conferences. With all the sorry news lately, it's refreshing to have a bit of humor.

no bailouts   December 3rd, 2008 2:59 pm ET

grow it back richardson.

Anthony   December 3rd, 2008 2:59 pm ET

Bill Richardson, if I get to pick should have the beard and the secretary of states job. (Actually he should have had Obama's job but thats a whole other story)

You people decided to write a misleading hed to attract my attention and waste my time by writing an article and hed that has no significance to the concerns of your readers and their lives.

I am taking your website off my list of bookmarks and I am never watching your channel again.

You're supposed to be journalists with excellent news judgement and an understanding of my limited time. If you can't do those things then you don't deserve my time, support, nor my donations.

What do you mean, his wife does not let him kiss her, HA.

Robert NYC   December 3rd, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Well, maybe he will grow it again for God Obama.

It's just a sin. CNN, can't you provide us with some worthy news?

patti   December 3rd, 2008 2:56 pm ET

I told my husband when he had his mid-life crisis that I would not kiss him until he shaved his beard. The thing about beards is this: It keeps food in places where it should'nt without a preservative. Ha! He is much better looking without the beard!

J Hallmark   December 3rd, 2008 2:55 pm ET

My vote is for the beard !! Looked good on him.

I hope Obama keeps a little levity in the press conferences. Makes the dreary economic news or other unpleasant news a little less worrisome for minute or two.

Grow the bead, Gov….

Amber   December 3rd, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Awww man…

With the beard he was BILL freakin' RICHARDSON!! LOOK OUT WORLD!

Now he just look like… some dude.

Doug   December 3rd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Yet another former presidential hopeful that Obama is giving a job to. So much for change.

Stephen Trask   December 3rd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

If we wants to appoint someone with a beard, how about Charlie Christ for FEMA.

TSlaven   December 3rd, 2008 2:52 pm ET

With the beard he looked like Luciano Pavarotti. I'm glad he decided to join the living and get rid of it — but more time on the treadmill is necessary still.

Jon   December 3rd, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Welcome to the next 4 years…

witch   December 3rd, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Love the beard!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He will make a great Sec of Commerce.

Leslie Somerville   December 3rd, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I am disappointed that this is "ACTUALLY" news worthy………..I agree with Marc in Cally. (I'm deeply disappointed with Obama for chosing this joker as his Commerce secretary. He's an ugly human being inside and out.) Richardson transmigrates to where he feels the winners are and asks them for a job. Thank God Almighty Hillary Clinton made it to SOS. President Elect Obama made a brilliant chose not to put Richardson in that position–smart man.

Patstooks   December 3rd, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I'm "deeply disappointed" too. He look so much better with the beard. With the beard, he looks like someone who knows what he's doing and is very confident that he can help you know what you should do.

GROW IT AGAIN!!!

Michael   December 3rd, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Way to be misleading, CNN.

Missy   December 3rd, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Uh, for those of you who are complaining, Obama didn't mean for it to be 'news.'.. IT WAS A JOKE!!!! There's nothing wrong with a little levity once in a while. Lighten up! I'm glad I was able to get a little bit of a laugh.

Jay   December 3rd, 2008 2:47 pm ET

It's not news, it's CNN.

Obama for President   December 3rd, 2008 2:47 pm ET

What's the matter with these losers on this blog who are so vicious about Richardson? He's a good guy. Personally, I liked his beard. And he speaks Spanish.

Alicia   December 3rd, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Richardson's sudden…beardness after the primary was a shock to me – he looked rather disheveled. But it's grown on me now and, like Obama, I'm sad to see it go. C'mon, Bill. Don't give into The Man just because you have an awesome job now.

P.S. to the people who made the weight comments: Get over it. We let Cheney be vice president for eight years and he's a fatty, too. Maybe not the best example, but he did survive…as far as we know, anyhow.

John Hine   December 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Bill,
Go with your gut instinct!! I do think you look better with the beard. It makes you look younger and thins your face. Regardless of appearance, Obama made a great choice in picking you!!! Carry on!!

Lauren   December 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

This headline is misleading. Shame on you.

Anonymous   December 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Bill looks younger with the facial hair….this is definitely against the normal way of things (as of course normally men with facial hair normally look older) but there you have it. Grow it back Bill! By the way, it was awesome to hear him speak Spanish during the conference!! Another awesome pick Obama! :-)

From NYC   December 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Yeah bring the Beard back Bill Richardson!!!

It was definitely Young, Hip and Stylish…. very Consistent with the new Obama Administration. You looked liked Robert Deniro in the movie "Heat".

Stylized but also "Sharp".

Greed is not good   December 3rd, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Well he had to shave and get a haircut for the interview…
He looks cooler with the beard though yeah.

carol814   December 3rd, 2008 2:44 pm ET

That is none of his busiess what this man does or doesn't do he has that freedom to do what ever he feels like doing and that is a fact.

This man who thinks is our President does have the right to get into anybodies space he is not a dictator. Maybe he is uncomfortable with it or maybe his wife doesn't like it there are so many reasons why he shaved it but that is his choice and that is a fact.

Just for that I would tell Barry to take that job and shove it where it "don't" hurt and make sure to do it now.

regor60   December 3rd, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Obama's bizarre comment on Richardson's hairless visage continues to demonstrate he needs to hire a humor consultant…quickly. We've already had 8 years of Bush's facial tics during press conferences to deal with, I don't think I could stand another 4 of nerdy half-witticisms.

Don't get me started on Richardson…the guy is not bright.

Lynda   December 3rd, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Grow the beard back! Not all men look good in a beard but Bill Richardson really does.

Matthew   December 3rd, 2008 2:43 pm ET

PAT California   December 3rd, 2008 2:42 pm ET

If Obama chose him for the job, he's the right one for it, with or without the beard. Personally, I like the beard better. It gives him character and it makes him look younger. My son shaved his too because it was coming in GRAY!!!!! Same reason?

MikeH   December 3rd, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Bill looks like he has a gular pouch for storing fish.

Dan   December 3rd, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Okay, I have to say that this is very odd. Not even close to a news story in any way shape or form. I can't even begin to figure out what significance this has.

Pat in IL   December 3rd, 2008 2:41 pm ET

I like and trust Richardson….beard or no beard. Some idiot on this board called him "ugly". That person is an idiot who may or may not be considered "beautiful" or "ugly" on the outside, but the inside is obviously not only ugly (for making such a dumb remark), but also really, really shallow. Is that kind of thing relavent to the intelligence and talents of people committed to public service?

peter kempf   December 3rd, 2008 2:40 pm ET

I think we should start a "Bring Back the Beard Bill" campaign!!

drinkwench   December 3rd, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Jimmy in Texas   December 3rd, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Maureen   December 3rd, 2008 2:38 pm ET

NatV, NYC   December 3rd, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Now the Pres-Elect will decide for his cabinet members if they are allowed to answer any questions even personal. What a power grabber!

Krista   December 3rd, 2008 2:38 pm ET

This was a little moment of levity during tough times for this country. It will be nice to have a president who can make jokes once in while and not be the butt of them like Shrub has been.

Bill congrats on the job! Please grow the beard back! It looked great!

Rush Lameduck   December 3rd, 2008 2:38 pm ET

@Proud American & True American"

Firstly, you two(probably the same person) need to change your names on this blog. Proud and True you are not. Secondly, it is easy to call someone ugly when you are sitting behind a keyboard. Grow up.

Gene in PA   December 3rd, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Jared CA   December 3rd, 2008 2:36 pm ET

So much for Obama being bipartisan. Where are all these Republican cabinet members he told us he'd have? I DOthink that Richardson will be good as Commerce Sec.

It's funny how the only people who have a problem with Richardson, are the people who were the Clinton die-hards during the Democratic primary. Yeah, um, Hillary is now a member of the Obama administration, and yes, so is Richardson, or "Judas" as you sore loser dropouts like to refer to him. Hillary is over it, Bill is over it, AMERICA IS OVER IT!

Get on board or just shut up and join the dark side already!!!!

Thomas L. Boise, ID   December 3rd, 2008 2:30 pm ET

A beard should not be a prerequisite for being secretary of commerce. Governor Richardson made an excellent choice in shaving his beard. He's sending a powerful signal to the American public that he's a very nice clean cut gentleman who's ready to perform his duties accordingly. Being clean cut is the better way to go; otherwise he could have been badly criticized for being too darn lazy to take a shave.

bobo   December 3rd, 2008 2:30 pm ET

He looks ten years younger with the beard.

T. Jackson   December 3rd, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Bring the beard back!!

Johnny V   December 3rd, 2008 2:28 pm ET

As a former New Mexican, I'm glad he got the cabinet post. He shoulda got the Secretary of State gig, as he is much more qualified than Hillary.

Definitely needs to bring back the beard.

Nick   December 3rd, 2008 2:28 pm ET

It's depressing to me how seriously some of the commentors seem to have taken this and how important appearances seem to be to them. The story was clearly just to highlight Obama's sense of humor. Relax.

Bread and Circuses   December 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Why is this news?

Jerry   December 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

To those of you on here that are obviously lacking a sense of humor, and in some cases a pulse, it was a JOKE! Geesh! At least now we have a President we can laugh with, and not at! C'mon people!

Maryam   December 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Interesting,,,,, it seems loads of u out there have nothing better to do but pettiness….. im having goose bumps to c adults condescending so low analysing a beard or looks ! my friends lets worry about the recession and the way forward than ugly comments .
We all have a right to our looks n style. i wish we could post pictures of our famous commentators… perhaps mum will be the word…..

Mav in Midwest   December 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Bring back the beard!

John G   December 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Welcome to the next four years. Facial Hair and fundraising to pay off the losers campaign debt is the name of the game.

Lauren   December 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

You have got to be kidding CNN,,,,,,

Obama commenting on a beard is NEWS?????????

Joaquim   December 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Most men of spanish heritage look good with facial hair. Macho

Dan Henrich   December 3rd, 2008 2:26 pm ET

He's absolutely right to be disappointed. Gov. Richardson needs that beard to define his neck, and who wants a Secretary of Commerce without a neck?

t   December 3rd, 2008 2:26 pm ET

I love all you people going on about how fat and ugly he is. The anonymity of the internet is a beautiful thing. I'm sure your all just way super hot!

Old White Virginia Female   December 3rd, 2008 2:25 pm ET

All of you folks with the Judas fixation in connection with Richardson need to get over it. I believe the man had the same morality problems with Mrs. Clinton that I did and could no longer support her. That is not a Judas. That is a decent man and that probably has more than anything to do with Obama wanting him on his team. The question is when is Hillary going to screw Obama to the wall. She is the one person whom he has taken a chance on who is not only capable but very probably going to upset this apple cart. And all because of 18 million cracks, certainly not expertise in foreign affairs. His best move was getting her as far away and as busy as possible with something OTHER than health care since he couldn't sweep her under the rug, unfortunately.

Sue   December 3rd, 2008 2:24 pm ET

I loved the beard….makes him look younger!

R. Beard   December 3rd, 2008 2:23 pm ET

I wish I could see pictures of the people who put negative comments about Bill Richardson's look and weight on this bog. They are probably are the ones that look Butt-Ugly and have no significant meaning or accomplishments in there lives.

I have watch B.R through-out the whole presindential primary and he seems to be a very honest nice person and knew his studf. I've even read about all his past post and accomplishments while he was under Bill Clinton's white house and the man has never has a negative review about him. So Obama has done well to put him in his cabinet. So for all you Haters….Get a life and get over it with him endorsing Obama over Hillary. He like the 56% popular voters got it right.

Obama/Biden 08

JL Picard   December 3rd, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Commander Riker!?

Anna, ATL   December 3rd, 2008 2:22 pm ET

The beard hides that ghastly neck of his.

There is no loyalty with Richardson. Zero. Keep at the bottom rungs as much as possible, if we have to have him at all.

Desperate for a Story   December 3rd, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Why would a reporter waste a question on such a stupid inquiry?
Why not ask him a semi-intelligent question?

Joe   December 3rd, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Please tell me why I should care CNN.

FEDUP   December 3rd, 2008 2:21 pm ET

I'm getting quick sick of the "alarmist" headlines. "Oh no, Obama is disappointed in Richardson… WHY???" Ha! Joke's on me… I read the article.

What's next???? "BUSH RESIGNS" (Bush resigns autograph because his orignal signature was smudged)

Pathetic! Stick to the news and leave the sensationalism out of it!

Mrs. Richardson   December 3rd, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Don't get me started…

Rod Haper   December 3rd, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Most definitely better with the beard. Grow it back, Bill.

Am   December 3rd, 2008 2:20 pm ET

O""Big lord who care for his beard.

Sharon Kitchen   December 3rd, 2008 2:20 pm ET

The beard look was great.
Either way- Bill Richardson is a good person and will due a good job.

Anonymous   December 3rd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

I deeply agree with you you only live once so do what you are please to do and what makes you happy nobody lives for you so i am with you a 100 percent thank god for the thick people having the mentally to do whatever theywant to do thick people are on the map too.

Veronica   December 3rd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Bummer – I was kind of partial to the beard …

Lisa   December 3rd, 2008 2:18 pm ET

I love the beard, hope he grows it back!!!

Bonnie   December 3rd, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Thank you for the humor. I can always use a chuckle during the day. If someone doesn't see the need for humor or why this is fun, then you really really do need some humor. I don't need to have gloom and doom all day every day to make my day meaningful. A little perspective please people.

Helen   December 3rd, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Richardson looks much better with his beard. It hides his double chin or "cluck" (like a chicken)

Rosa Birmingham, AL   December 3rd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

I like the beard. He probably should lose some weight though for health reasons.

peopleguru   December 3rd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

The beard was awesome and he is the kind of empathetic, collaborative and generous man we need in the Cabinet. Regardless of his official role, he is going to a voice for common-sense and fairness. He (and Napolitano) will provide the perspective of those in the southwest whose voices we need more of on the national stage.

Alex   December 3rd, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Yeah, bring back the fuz, lose some weight, it's awwwright.

CJ/PA   December 3rd, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Wow, some of you people are downright critical and ugly yourselves with your comments. Bill Richardson is one of the finest negotiators around, and he will be a credit to the job of Secretary of Commerce, which is also a vital part of the Administration as far as job creation, trade, and economics go. Please lighten up — you slammed Obama when he gave Joe Biden cupcakes, and now he makes a joke about Bill's beard — we need a little levity during these times, and humor is what, eventually, will help all of us get through these tough times! Relax everyone – help is truly on the way (if we can just get through the next 49 days!!)

Dennis   December 3rd, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Bill Richardson would have been a much better choice for Secretary of State than Hillary. I think he can be diplomatic. Something I can't see Hiallary doing.

Jim   December 3rd, 2008 2:15 pm ET

great reporting CNN. Keep up the good work.

rb   December 3rd, 2008 2:15 pm ET

I think it's a great look for him…well trimmed, and frames his eyes and smile very nicely.

E_va   December 3rd, 2008 2:15 pm ET

To beard or not to beard…LOL. This is news?

Jerri   December 3rd, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Bill Richardson is a very handsome man with or without the beard. However, for his sake and those that care about him, he really should lose weight.

brian   December 3rd, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Dude – Keep the beard or lose a little weight Bill..

Come on man! One pound per week…

Amy   December 3rd, 2008 2:14 pm ET

The real question is, what kind of puppy will he be getting? I mean, THAT'S news, right?

Kevin   December 3rd, 2008 2:13 pm ET

He should have kept the beard showing his rebellion, polticians should be distinguishable and original, grow it back.

Audrey   December 3rd, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Grow the beard back!!! I liked the beard.

Angi's mom   December 3rd, 2008 2:13 pm ET

I won't comment on his appearance if he doesn't comment on mine. : -)

Mary Chrisman   December 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Grow, Bill, grow!

McFly   December 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Jeez people, lighten up!

Brother Richardson … don't listen to all these haters, they are just jealous. Now, go give 'em hell at the Commerce Department!

Delta Tau Delta FOREVER!

RepublicanForObama   December 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Duuude, they were kidding! Why are there serious folks commenting here. He's not the president yet. And the current one is watching our country crumble. Judge him when he steps in the White House.

Geees.

IndyVoter   December 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Definately better with! But still guapo and he'll be a great Commerce Sec'y to boot.

TexasAnnie *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*   December 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Yo Bill-
The consultants were right about the fact you needed to lose some weight.
The beard thing is your choice.
Personally, I'm disappointed that Obama included him in his cabinet. This is the only cabinet selection I disagree with thus far.

Quick   December 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Wow, some of you need to lighten up some.

I believe this post was merely intended to be humorous.

Soccer Nana   December 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

My vote is for the beard!

CZS in FL   December 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Kissing a man without a beard is like eating an egg without salt. Richardson is the first candidate I ever donated money to for his election. He is highly competent and I am glad he is in this administration. Get the beard back!

Solomon Studenberg   December 3rd, 2008 2:11 pm ET

He really let himself go. The pig outs must have been prodigious. He now looks like an overfed turkey, fattened up by the canibals for a feast, where he would be the main dish. Anyone who has so little self respect, cannot be good for Obama.

rich   December 3rd, 2008 2:11 pm ET

That's change u can believe in folks! lol

lonnette33   December 3rd, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Yep! The beard is what he needs to worry about. Not!

How about joining Weight Watchers. I've lost nearly 15 lbs thus far Richardson ?

Suzanne   December 3rd, 2008 2:11 pm ET

I love his beard

mike… seriously?

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   December 3rd, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Bill Richardson was my first choice, but he didn't make it to Texas.
I'm behind Obama 100% and know that Richardson will be a great Sec'y of Commerce.
Oh yeah, I liked the beard.

Liz   December 3rd, 2008 2:09 pm ET

I think the beard made Richardson look pretty suave. Hope he decides to grow it back.

Judi in Los Angeles   December 3rd, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Please, please bring the beard back! I, for one, think it looks great!!

Jan   December 3rd, 2008 2:06 pm ET

George   December 3rd, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Boy that Obama has a quick wit, doesn't he?

Business Owner In NY   December 3rd, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Someone took time to write about this?

Steve in VA   December 3rd, 2008 2:04 pm ET

What difference does it make, both he and Obama are extremely shady characters with or without beards, mustaches, goatees, or whatever.

Reality   December 3rd, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Here come four years of democrat elites rolling around in their own pretentious offal. This is the news you can expect. Nevermind the historic troubles facing America. Party before country. Pun intended.

Meh   December 3rd, 2008 2:00 pm ET

I love Obama's sense of humor, but is this really news, CNN?

Bill Charlotte,NC   December 3rd, 2008 1:59 pm ET

I love this guy!

"Barry" Moore   December 3rd, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Did Richardson throw the beard under the bus like he did New Mexico? That is a typical action for an Obamaniac. Nothing permanent and dependable anywhere!!

JOE THE DRUMMER   December 3rd, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Richardson needs to get liposuction for his double chin he looks like a bull frog. A diet could work also.

Kevin   December 3rd, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Why did Obama comment about this? What does a beard have to do with Richardson's appointment?

Why did reporter feel the need to write about this? Was ANYONE REALLY CONCERNED about this?

proudliberal   December 3rd, 2008 1:57 pm ET

bring back the beard. it covers up those other 2 chins.

Peggy the Unemployed   December 3rd, 2008 1:56 pm ET

I thought he looked "hot" with the beard. Hope he grows it back.

Pepou   December 3rd, 2008 1:56 pm ET

I agree. He was much better looking with it. More intellectual …

Tim   December 3rd, 2008 1:55 pm ET

As PeeWee would say, that's so funny I forgot to laugh.

Anyone here think Obama has a sense of humor?

ETTA   December 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I just recently suffered a heart attack so I say drop the weight and be healthy, life needs to be enjoyed for a long time.

California Girl   December 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

The beard helps structure his face to appear thinner. Bring the beard back!

Laverne   December 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

At least the beard hid some of that fat hanging from this neck. Maybe Obama he can hang out at the gym with Obama?

albania   December 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

This beard should cleaned up as soon as he had the position, unles people mostly in the USA DON'T accepted him.

"Barry" Moore   December 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Obama, you have pulled in most of the democrats who ran against you during the primaries. Where will you put Kucinich? and Dodd?
All these egomaniacs fighting against one another, all believing themselves to be superior to the others, etc. You're in for a rough ride, and you think you can control all them with your "Coolness"? You will probably throw them all under the bus before long, just like you did your 20-year pastor and your grandmother (and Michelle, too, it seems). ???

VeroNM   December 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I agree, he looks better with the beard. Now hopefully people will realize that New Mexico is part of the United States :) we're all proud of him back home!!!

Doug   December 3rd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

The real tragedy is that Bill Richardson looks like John Belushi if he had survived rehab. Wow! Our next commerce secretary having a food fight at the White House!

Muz   December 3rd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

His neck looks weird, bring back the beard

Bill   December 3rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

I don't mind Bill Richardson as a person or politician, but I haven't seen anything in his biography that would seem to qualify him for this post.

C Spurgeon   December 3rd, 2008 1:51 pm ET

I didn;t care for his beard at all and now he looks younger, I think he will do a great job as Commerce sec though and wish him well,

CHANGE IS COMING - FINALLY!!!   December 3rd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

hmmm, battle of the beard!
!

Christie Avalon   December 3rd, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Gov Richardson was the most knowledgeable of all the democrats who ran for president, but he did not campaign effectively. He rolled over very easily when the going got rough and even though he had nasty things to say about Obama and Hillary, he will now change his stripes just like he did his appearance. He cannot be trusted, but still he fits in very will with the new administration.

MLD   December 3rd, 2008 1:49 pm ET

"deeply disappointed". I guess that puts Obama's feelings about a stupid beard (hiding a huge double chin) on the same level as Russia's invasion of Georgia in Obama's mind (less).

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 3rd, 2008 1:49 pm ET

What was the stock market impact?

Doctor J   December 3rd, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Jackie – no goiter, he's just fat. The beard hides it a bit. If you see photos of him in an open neck shirt he simply has a couple of chins.

Marie in California   December 3rd, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Richardson looked bad enough with the beard. Without it, he looks like a grown-up version of the Gerber baby…..only not cute at all. Uggghh!

And he's still a Judas.

gab   December 3rd, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Keep it!

Ken   December 3rd, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Gosh, what a relevant topic! I'm so glad the Obamessiah is taking time out of his busy schedule to address the REAL concerns of Americans.

What a joke.

01/20/2013: Obama's Last Day

cornchips   December 3rd, 2008 1:42 pm ET

that's the same guy?

Michelle   December 3rd, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Um, I really don't understand how this is news. I don't care how my commerce secretary wears his facial hair as long as he is making good decisions for America.

Elaine   December 3rd, 2008 1:41 pm ET

He looks better with a beard.

matt   December 3rd, 2008 1:40 pm ET

why is this even news?

Alan   December 3rd, 2008 1:39 pm ET

He looks fatter now too, he had a good thing going with the beard thing

liz   December 3rd, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Oh No what a tragedy…….Oh c'mon CNN!!

Boyd   December 3rd, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Bring back the beard! It's just the right touch for him.

G.Q. Romero   December 3rd, 2008 1:39 pm ET

He's more popular outside New Mexico. LMAO at all these favorable comments! What a (double)chin!

wait a minute   December 3rd, 2008 1:38 pm ET

I am much disappointed that Richardson isn't our SOS with or without beard.

desk jockey   December 3rd, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Doesn't look like a goiter – just one of the chins the beard's been hiding. Yes, the beard must come back! ;)

Austin   December 3rd, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Grow it back quick.
Does your face hurt, cause it's killing me !

Consuela   December 3rd, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Bill, please bring the beard back! Please!!

Truth Hurts   December 3rd, 2008 1:35 pm ET

What a slap in the Face!!!!

Obama doesnt give Richardson the job he is qualified for, he gives it to Hillary who isnt qualifed.

Truth Hurts

NikkiNew   December 3rd, 2008 1:35 pm ET

He looked happier with the beard.

GH   December 3rd, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Too bad……..I liked the beard also.

Before the beard, he had a 'van Dyke' (mustache and goatee) that didn't work as well for me as the beard but either is superior to the clean shaven look. Grow it back, Bill….take the advice of your soon-to-be boss and grow it back.

I'm glad BR is on board in the cabinet. I would've preferred him in Hillary's slot as SOS but he's too good a resource to leave out. of the new admin.

Dee-Norfolk, VA (NorVA)   December 3rd, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I agree with the Vegas Barbie…

The beard was hot…bring it back!!

Josie   December 3rd, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I read the reviews and have 1 question, why people are so evil and say mean things what about the person you are demeaning. You can speak life and death with words.

CMJ   December 3rd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

As one who suffers from the same weird neck thing – I envy the fact that Richardson is a man and can grow a beard to cover it up. As a woman, I on the other hand have to live without a neck in full view. Its not attractive. But oh well, great personality right?

Bad neck genes I guess!

AJ   December 3rd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Who cares about the beard!! Obama should be more concerned about integrity, honesty and loyalty, none of which are adjectives that could be used when describing Richardson.

Steph   December 3rd, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Dear "True American",

I sure hope you don't call yourself a "True Christian" as well. Try asking yourself that old question, WWJD?

By the way, I liked the beard!

Sammy   December 3rd, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Well since this is big news, and since the comments are still open, why not say something…

Ummm, does Bill Richardson look better with or without the beard… ummm… u really wanna know what i think don't u…

do u really care???

Mr, Kitty   December 3rd, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Great choice. Big Bill inherited a budget surplus and after 6 years of being gov. he is now leaving us in NM with a projected $300-500 million deficit. Good time to leave town Bill, this time do us a favor and stay gone. I', sure as a member of Obama's economic team, your experiance will help turn this economy around.

Vadiva30   December 3rd, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Bring the beard back. It helps hide the weight gain. Grow it back and try to lose the weight.

An American   December 3rd, 2008 1:29 pm ET

God, who really cares????

George   December 3rd, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Bill, grow the beard back. It adds character and singles you out from the rest of the clones.

S Callahan   December 3rd, 2008 1:29 pm ET

lol….who cares if he has a beard…I'm more concerned about what he can do in his new role to keep jobs, help create new jobs, and how we are going to be self sufficent for energy..including our vehicles…..

Of course, if the beard makes him smarter and or stronger…then heck, grow it back! :-)

Ed C.   December 3rd, 2008 1:28 pm ET

I think he needed the beard, he needs all he can get to cover that up.

ELAINE N. RAMEY   December 3rd, 2008 1:27 pm ET

AS HEAD OF ELECTRONICS UNDER CLINTON, BILL RICHARDSON TREATED DISABLED WORKERS POORLY. My disabled son who worked in an unconditioned post office in 116 degree temperature under Bill Richardson said Richardson knew how to make employees miserable AND DID IT.

Walt, Belton,TX   December 3rd, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Hopefully, that wasn't the only reason Obama offered a cabinet post to Richardson……………………

No Hillary = No Obama   December 3rd, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Obama should grow one. This statement is open to interpretation.

Nebs   December 3rd, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Bill,
Grow that beard now or i will stop supporting the Hispanic community…
Just kidding… i like the beard…

American View   December 3rd, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Who really cares. How about some news!

Rob Johnson   December 3rd, 2008 1:25 pm ET

One of the things I've always liked about Obama is that he has a sense of humor and doesn't take himself too seriously.

Richardson is a good guy and will make a great Commerce Secretary.

Mboka   December 3rd, 2008 1:24 pm ET

I love and respect the Rich. One of the strongest statesmen we have in the U.S. I would have been much happier if he was chosen for the Secretary of state position. But I understand why Hillary got it. I am sure he understands too.

Marc in Virginia   December 3rd, 2008 1:24 pm ET

I'm deeply disappointed with Obama for chosing this joker as his Commerce secretary. He's an ugly human being inside and out.

AD   December 3rd, 2008 1:23 pm ET

My vote is pro-beard. :D

Let's see if he grows it back.

Dave T.   December 3rd, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Please, bring back the beard!

dennis_k   December 3rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Are we really going to have a president that has both intelligence and a sense of humor? After 8 years of The Bush, my head is reeling!

Obama/Biden '12

Jackie   December 3rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

It looks like he has a goiter on his neck. How's his health?

karen raleigh   December 3rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Great appointment and hes right -its his face-to have or not to have hair is entirely up to him.

Gerald C, Madison, WI   December 3rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Definitely should have kept the beard.

Ken   December 3rd, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Beard or no beard, he is still the one who betrayed the Clintons. Fortunately, he did not get the top cabinet post and can envy Hilary while he does nothing consequential for President Obama.

billy   December 3rd, 2008 1:21 pm ET

I think he looks better with the beard, he seems more approachable and for some reason I wanna sit down and have some soup with the guy or go fishing, weird I know. But maybe that is the kind of image and approach we need for other countries to take a interest in doing business with us again.

Daniel P   December 3rd, 2008 1:20 pm ET

I think Sarah Palin should grow a beard and then ask Obama to appoint her to his cabinet in disguise in order to test how thorough his vetting process really is…..

Almost the end of THE error!   December 3rd, 2008 1:19 pm ET

He looks much better with the beard. Its so funny that this is mentioned because I thought the exact same thing. He looks like he has gained some weight, and it may be because the beard was covering up the double/triple chin. But now its out there for all to see.

GODDY   December 3rd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Beard mucho good!

Jaye   December 3rd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

I personally love the beard!!!

Dylan   December 3rd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

As a man who also sports a beard, I was very disappointed when i turned on the press conference to see Richardson beardless. I'm crossing my fingers though that he'll grow it back. Bearded men across this country also need representation!

Max   December 3rd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Seriously?

Four years of non-news that will be eagerly embraced by so-called "information" sources, coming up.

Tom in Delaware   December 3rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I know just how you feel Barack….I'm deeply disappointed too.

jeff in MA   December 3rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I agree, the beard brought a pizazz. Its a good thing he's not secretary of facial hair…zing

Sophie   December 3rd, 2008 1:15 pm ET

I would suggest that in lieu of ad naseum discussion of his beard, we ask him to look at some sort of insurance (medicare/medicaide) starting at age 60 so millions of american who have the ability to retire early will do so and open up millions of well paid jobs?

JT   December 3rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

He should have kept the beard.

Virginia   December 3rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

And this is news??? Who cares–he is just another Dem who will be up there running things in the "good ol' boys' club" they call change……

David Snyder   December 3rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

With the beard: distinguished.

Without the beard: conniving.

Ernie   December 3rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

He is ugly either way. He needs to lose 100 pounds instead of the beard.

DC   December 3rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Why is this news?

Tito   December 3rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Great to see an eminent hispanic in this most diversified mix of the Obama's team of potential transformers…way to go!

Candid   December 3rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I agreen with Mr. Obama, Bill Richardson looks much better with the beard. Fortunately he can get it back easily, it just takes some time.

Susan L.   December 3rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Another vote for the beard! Please grow it back, Governor! It looked cool and a bit rakish. Not that many men in Washington try to get away with that look. It's high time someone did!

Decided Independent   December 3rd, 2008 1:10 pm ET

I miss the beard too. It looked good, and it was a refreshing display of bravery and defiance, and of individuality above the overly polished cookie-cutter politician look.

I say, on behalf of all bearded men (and bearded women too, I suppose), that we need more positive bearded role models like Bill Richardson.

kishen c.rao   December 3rd, 2008 1:10 pm ET

it really does not matter whether he grows beard or not…what matters is his ethics and job performance in the government….he does not need to be a hindu-saint or muni….

Staff   December 3rd, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Beard looks better. It better disguises the double chin and chubby chops!

60 year old white female and proud supporter of PE Obama   December 3rd, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Richardson will be an excellent Secretary of Commerce which could prove to be as important as Secretary of State in this global economy. He brings all sorts of talents to the job and obviously PE Obama sees this role as a very key one both nationally and internationally.

Pundits, naysayers and speculators can say what they will but it is all speculation until January 20th and after.

BL   December 3rd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Beard looked great – Richardson is a good guy, either way.

Rick   December 3rd, 2008 1:08 pm ET

He looks better with the smile then without the smile. The beard worked for him too.

Greg from ATL   December 3rd, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Now he looks like Jim Belushi.

Diablo   December 3rd, 2008 1:06 pm ET

On second thought…

saidy ceesay   December 3rd, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Richardson look better without beard. I like his personality face look during the campaing 2008. I have no daught that he will be a great team player to the Obama cabinet. He will be a good secretary. of commerce for our nation.

Saidy Ceesay

Liberal and Proud of It   December 3rd, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Richardson was my first choice for president, then Edwards, Biden, Obama, and Clinton in that order. I'm beginning tot hink I was wrong to under-rate Obama because his performance since the nomination has been pretty much flawless.

My opinion of Richardson is still as high as ever. He will perform ably in Obama's cabinet. I hope he will move up to State when Hillary moves on after Obama's first term. He might still be my first choice for president in 2016.

Karen -San Antonio   December 3rd, 2008 1:05 pm ET

He looks much better and younger with the beard. It hides his chubby chin area. But it really doesn't matter what anyone thinks, it is all about how he feels about it himself…and he seems pretty happy. So that's always a good thing! Barack will be alright with it and so will I.

ET from Omaha   December 3rd, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I tink with the beard he looks better.

Proud American   December 3rd, 2008 1:03 pm ET

The man is butt ugly with or without a beard!

Perhaps losing some weight will help him a bit!

Voted for Obama/Biden in NV   December 3rd, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I always liked Bill Richardson – I agree with Obama, to bad he shaved his beard it gave him charecter – but I am so glad he will be part of the team

Pedro   December 3rd, 2008 1:03 pm ET

He should have kept the beard. And he should play weekly basketball games with Obama, Biden, Gates, Jim Jones, Rahm Emmanuel, Podesta in the White House to loose some pounds.
He put on a lot of weight and that's not healthy

Mia and Mike   December 3rd, 2008 1:02 pm ET

I liked the beard too. It made him look much younger and more manly

steve   December 3rd, 2008 1:02 pm ET

who really cares?

Flex   December 3rd, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Obama, I'm deeply disappointed that you won't grow an asymmetrical mohawk!

Theresa   December 3rd, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Glad to see a talented Hispanic in the Cabinet.

Mirror   December 3rd, 2008 1:01 pm ET

All they want is to mirror the image of their "god," or the new boss. But, only the Creator knows his heart, and ambition, in the long run. It is imperfect and sinful human nature. God sees the whole picture, while we limited human beings see only the snapshots.

Kimberly   December 3rd, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Wow! He looked much younger with the beard. Grow it back… pleeeease!

Vegas Barbie for Obama   December 3rd, 2008 1:00 pm ET

The beard was hot.

April   December 3rd, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Good for you, Governor Richardson and Congradulations on the cabinet post of Secretary of Commerce. I think it is a good fit for your expertise.

Grow the beard back, it adds to your appearance

boered1   December 3rd, 2008 12:59 pm ET

too bad the better person did not get the Secretary of State position, I would ahve been proud to see Richardson, with or without beard, there

but on second thought a few months after the liar hillary is actually in the position of sos and has proven her incompetence they just may move Richardson over there to fix what she will have, undoubtable, screwed up

Sweetie   December 3rd, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Richardson still looks like a Snake to me!

Look up what his main job for Bill was and you will consider him a Snake as well!

I hope Obama doesn't use him the same way Bill did!

Sleaze all the way !

chuck   December 3rd, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I think he was told to shave his beard. Well someone had to to the dirty job.The beard was just horrible.

Dan   December 3rd, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I think he looked better with the beard….

Petena   December 3rd, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I don't like beards – they look nasty.

Texas Teacher   December 3rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I'm glad we have a President elect with a sense of humor…. it's refreshing…. :)

A man who can laugh at himself and display a delightful sense of humor over little things…. simply does not take himself so seriously as to feel like he is the know all, end all of reason. It is to my mind the mark of true intelligence.

Contrast this to the snickering humor of Bush. I will never forget the "I am the decider speech." So many times I spit up in my mouth over the pure ignorance of the man! And now they talk about little brother Bush getting back into politics…. Pardon me… I just spit up in my mouth again. My gag reflex is pretty weak after eight years of Bush and Cheney!

LW In Texas   December 3rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I Love this guy, he is so darn refreshing, He his going to be great for our country. As a guy who has a few extra pounds myself, I am glad to see Bill out there.

gary n.   December 3rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

What does Sarah Palin think about this ?

Truman   December 3rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

I think that he should have kept the beard for "change" sake. It would have shown that facial hair is not taboo, in America.

MIAMI-FL   December 3rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

You tell them Richie!!!!

Chelsea   December 3rd, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Are they serious? Reporting about a beard (or lack thereof…)?? This is strange.

Kelcie   December 3rd, 2008 12:56 pm ET

I think he will be a wonderful commerce secretary.

Also, he definitely looks better with the beard.

Jimmy Edu   December 3rd, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I regretted also that Richardson didn't make it to the Secretary of State position, as against. But then, beard or no beard, he'll make a good team player. Good job.

E = Mc 2   December 3rd, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Judas just got paid !!!!

Dave in NYC   December 3rd, 2008 12:53 pm ET

I thought the beard looked sloppy so I'm glad to see it go… I do agree that he needs to watch those extra pounds, though!

Obama's Joke writer   December 3rd, 2008 12:53 pm ET

I'm disappointed that Gov. Richardson got rid of his beard but hey Gov. Crist is getting a new beard Dec 12.

mike ikem umealo   December 3rd, 2008 12:53 pm ET

as long as the brain doesn't grow hairs, bill is fine with or without.

Daniel Adewumi from Canada   December 3rd, 2008 12:52 pm ET

That is irrelevant to his ability to deliver. He should be able to decide for himself how he want to look afterall he is not the president who is contitutionaly required to shave.
I am unhappy he did not get the Secretary of State.

Kate B.   December 3rd, 2008 12:51 pm ET

I have to confess… I LOVED his beard and am also very disappointed he shaved it off. I agree with Anne E…. He'll make a great commerce secretary, beard or not, but a far sexier commerce secretary WITH it. I don't believe that was one of the elements President Elect Obama was looking for though…LOL.

rich   December 3rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Richardson needs to push himself away from the table so that he may live longer and serve the nation. He has two or three chins going on there. lol. He should have kept his beard to hide them, but being the gentleman he is, he came out clean shaven for the moment.

Ian   December 3rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Interesting. And what about the 2010 social security crisis? You know, the one with $30 TRILLION in unfunded liablities?

Andrea   December 3rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

I rather like the beard!

aliceblue   December 3rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

I giggled like a total dork when Obama answered this question–mostly because he was voicing my own disappointment at the loss of the Bill-beard. I thought the Governor looked impossibly more cuddly and adorable with it and was devestated when he shaved it!

I love that we're going to have a President who can be so goofy and funny without being a smirky frat boy. So refreshing.

Even though I wanted him for State, I'm excited by the Commerce appointment. It sounds like he's going to be very active and influential in the new administration.

Rosie   December 3rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

The beard was sexy! Bill might have been President if he'd grown it sooner.

Dee   December 3rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Richardson was hot with the beard ;-)

True American   December 3rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

He is fat and repulsive with or without the beard. He should try wearing a paper bag over his head next time!

M   December 3rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Is Bill Richardson growing another face?

Brittany   December 3rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

With Beard

JOHN   December 3rd, 2008 12:46 pm ET

slow news day, eh?

ANAG LOS ANGELES, CA   December 3rd, 2008 12:46 pm ET

He looks pretty bad without it thats not the point though CONGRATS GOV. RICHARDSON on your position even thought you were robbed by hillary for sec of state

Darla (Edmonton, Canada)   December 3rd, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Bill … the beard was sexy!

Roberto   December 3rd, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Bill Richardson needs a beard to hide his triple chin. I love the guy, but he has a face made for radio.

suzyku   December 3rd, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Richardson does look better with the beard!

Matt   December 3rd, 2008 12:44 pm ET

He can't sell beard rides anymore now that he's going to be SoC, so why bother keeping it?

Nick   December 3rd, 2008 12:44 pm ET

He shaved it? It gave him a "cool" factor.

Gary   December 3rd, 2008 12:43 pm ET

I think its stupid that Obama would even make an issue out of it.

A person's choice of appearance is none of his business.

scaramooch   December 3rd, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Without the beard, I think he resembles J. Edgar Hoover.

KJL   December 3rd, 2008 12:41 pm ET

I think he looks very distinguished either way.

cool onlooker   December 3rd, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Beard or no beard, he is Richardson. I respect this gentleman so much. He had all the guts to come out endorse Obama when so many controversies happened at almost the same time to Obama. He has insight.

Don't worry about the extra pounds. The country and the position will get you to do more exercise than ever to lose them.

: )

Yvenst Miami   December 3rd, 2008 12:38 pm ET

I agree.

Richardson should not have cut the beard.

He looks like a nerdy bully withou it.

brett   December 3rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

in his defense, it was no shave november. he's gotta wait till razor-free february to get that beast going again

Iowa Mom   December 3rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

He looked a lot better with the beard..and thinner possibly.

Diablo   December 3rd, 2008 12:35 pm ET

I told him to.

Chris-Chicago, IL   December 3rd, 2008 12:35 pm ET

If he had that beard while running for President, he would have had my vote.

Jazz   December 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

That was a good disappointment joke Obama.

Anne E.   December 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

I'm deeply disappointed that Gov. Richardson isn't our Secretary of State, but I know he'll be a great commerce secretary, beard or no beard.

SENATUS POPOLUSQUE ROMANUS   December 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

I believe Richardson ought to worry about the SEVERAL extra pounds he is accumulating rather than shaving his beard………….

Dakota   December 3rd, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Obama didn't let Richardson answer the question, but the New Mexico governor told Esquire Magazine in an interview posted online Wednesday that "After the campaign, I grew a beard as a rebellion against those consultants who told me I had to comb my hair, shave, lose weight. I said, You know, I’m gonna do what I want now. That was a good feeling."
——-
haha, what a funny guy. I like Richardson's character. I just hope he does a good job as Secretary of Commerce.
