You state this man is probably a Republican since the clinton news network did not gush all over him being a democrat please read the entire article next time. the second to last paragraph clearly stated he supported and helped fund Obama so even if he is a republican he is on the "right" side this time.

It is funny until I read all the posts here I did not even notice that the article said he was black.. AI did notice it said he was a baptist preachers son but will not hold that against him still want to know how to donate to his foundation based on his actions here it seems to be one oyu can trust to do good without the strings other foundations use

What a great "feel good" story for the holidays! It does, however, bother me that so many apparently begrudge Mr. Stafford's generosity using the economy as a reason to bash the "bash." I see this as akin to the Make A Wish Foundation...for God's sake...most of the people Stafford is making this available to could never in their wildest dreams think of witnessing such a historic, once-in-a-lifetime even but he's making it possible. No doubt he gives millions to other charities that help on a more basic level. Would you tell Make A Wish not to send that child to Disneyworld but instead to pay for another chemo treatment??? Have a heart folks!

This is a genuine post, regardless of how schmaltzy you cynics think it is. The inauguration gift is one of the loveliest gestures I have ever seen. This man is an angel to do such a kind deed for so many. Does it solve hunger or bring world peace? Sorry, it doesn't. It just is a wonderful act of kindness in an unkind world, and will undoubtedly remain a bright memory for the rest of the recipients' lives.

To Obama change?: The disgrace is spending 10 billions dollars a month x 7 years (over 84 billion dollars in Irag alone) is the disgrace. You want to talk about right is right and wrong is wrong. What about all the people who have lost their love ones because of a war that was started because of a right out lie to the American people, what about the way we treated our own when Katrina hit New Orleans. You sir, don't make any sense in your reasoning. If you want to call a spade a spade then do that, but don't you dare try to make it seem as if Obama's inauguration is a disgrace, especially when most of the money was raised from donors who can do whatever they choose to do with their money unlike the rest of us who have had to support a war whether we wanted to or not.

Can I say something to all of you who say the money can go to other things. How do you know Mr. Stafford isn't already contributing to the poor, education, etc. He has a foundation. What he is doing is adding joy to lives that probably would never have the opportunity to enjoy this type of service in there whole lives. People can live on the experience for years, to say I was there – and in style.

So just bless this gentleman and ask yourself when was the last time you gave something to someone – just because you could.

to 'obama change?' – if Obama's inauguration is 9 million it will be actually on the low side. The second Bush inauguration cost over 40 million.
My other comment is to express my disappointment at the sharp comments on here regarding republicans. just because many of us are glad to see them out of the white house for awhile, it doesn't warrant mean-spirited language when referring to our fellow americans, just because they have modestly different opinions on how our country should be run.

A real nice gesture and a nice humanitarian story, yet it still gets some negative comments from those who don't support Obama. Sometimes I just wonder if my country will EVER be united.

To all the people that think this entire inaugural event is too over the top, take a look at all the parties GW is having at the White House for the Holidays and how much he is spending. Not to mention the parties but they just announced they purchased a new home for when they leave the White House. This all from taxpayers money....Obama's inaugural is from willing donors, not taxpayers money.

That's a very nice gesture by mr. stattford, but who's worried about Obama's big party. There are people that can't put food on the table, or people who can't heat their homes, if they still have a home left. People that can't provide for their children.

About a month ago Obama's team was worried about the inaguration, they only had 9 million dollars to spend. I know this is a big event, but let's put first things first. If they can't through a party for 9 million dollars,[which would feed and house a lot of people] then forget it, give the 9 million dollars to people that are less fortunate.

God is watching us, right is right, 9 million dollars for a party is a disgrace, when they are so many people hurting.

It's really grat that there is a wealthy person willing to give back to the people of our nation, yet for some reason there are people here that STILL find something wrong with what he's doing. Is it just because it's the Obama inaugural and some people just can't let their bitterness go? Great Christmas spirit from some of those that claim to be on the CHRISTIAN right!

Indeed this is a lovely gesture by Mr. Stafford. America has come so far and still has so far to go. The bigotry and hatred that has been imbedded in the minds and hearts of some Americans is so disheartening and disappointing. Barack Obama is not going through anything less than black people before him. White people could never understand the struggle, the pain and the rejection from a country who says "we are all created equal", but have not experienced that equality most or their lives. I am a white women and I can sympathize, but will never totally understand. I share in the joy and hope the black community are feeling because of Obama's success and victory. Just think about it, if you lived in a country where there were only blacks for hundreds of years and you experienced racial discrimination because you were white and struggled just to be treated like a person and respected and then a white man suddenly rose to power beating the odds, how would you feel as a people, white people that is??????? Listen, the oppressor and the oppressed see the world through different eyes. I pray for our nation as a people because someone will have to answer to all the hatred and misjustice of God's people. Please do remember, blacks are God's people too and the bible tells "what you do to the least, you do until me"

At no time does it mention that Mr. Stafford was directing his largess to only black people, yet some of the posts have the nerve to question if the benificiaries will all be black. Why? agree. This brings tears to my eyes! Not only because you are doing it, but also because you even THOUGHT of doing it. So many of us sit around and wait for good to happen and wait for someone to make a move. I admire this in you. I do not have much but I do not mind donating to this very worthy cause. I cannot afford to take myself or my mother to this wonderful event, but I would love to have a small part in helping someone else's dream come true.

Mr.Stafford is indeed a man sent from heaven with a Heart of GOLD. I have read about this man and his family. They are humble and truly loves God and their fellow human beings. Try checking out what the Stafford Foundation has done in the lives of very many Americans. Let us all appreciate the gift of God, while also pleading with people like Christy to put aside the bitterness of racism. America is in dare need of so many Staffords and I am confident many more will soon turn up to give a helping hand to the failling economy and to individual Americans who can no longer afford to live a standardised life. Perhaps if John McCain was in "black face", it would ease tension for those of you who simply cannot get beyond the fact the Barack Obama is a Black Man, and "Oh by the way the President of the United States"! You see, while some simply want say it, the color of Barack's skin, regardless if he was 59 years old with 25 years of experience, is and has been, throughout the 22-month campaign, the HUGE pick elephant in the room. Reagan had ABSOLUTELY no political experience, but he was a "white man", so that trumped everything. Get off the "no experience" wagon. I, like many Barack supporters, both black and white, are resolved to the fact that regardless of what OUR PRESIDENT does, how effectively he does it..and he will be effective, and how it positively affects the nay-sayers, some will NEVER accept the fact that he is President of the United States. Their conscious will NEVER, EVER let them. What pity and a shame! President Obama is not even in office yet and so many of the nay-sayer and negative bigots already know what he's NOT going to do! Poor nay-sayers never want change, they just want supremecy. However, there's an out! Flee, get out NOW and go into complete exile forever! CNN please add a link so those of us here who want to help in this endevour have a place to send what little remaining money we have. this is an inspiring story, and while it may be only one day of food, comfort, and exposure to many who post on here, for the terminal, the poor, and the veterans who recieve this gift it will be much more it will be making them a part of our nations history. Many of them can not just stay home and watch it on TV as not many cardboard "homes" have a TV.

I sure hope that whoever receives this generousity has a great time on inauguration day. I also hope that once these poverty-stricken or disabled people go back to their lives on January 21, they value that one luxurious experience more than the sum of what it cost Mr. Stafford. I just KNEW there would be people on here saying "He should be giving to this" or "He should be giving to that." Are you people who are saying this republicans, by any chance? It's funny – you don't want your tax dollars to be spent on any social programs (screaming socialism, which it isn't – socialism is more like government ownership of homes, like buying up mortgages, or government ownership of business, like buying up bank stocks, you know, what the current administration is doing). Yet, you feel like you ought to be able to dictate what someone else spends their after-tax dollars on, and criticize anyone who spends money on something you happen to disagree with. Where in this story were the races of those selected to go mentioned, I certainly did not see it. I don't see why so many are offended by such a selfless gesture. Even if every last one of the people selected were black, why should it make a difference to you. There are so many instances in which blacks are excluded and nobody notices because it is status quo. I don't know about where you live, but in my city, most of the taxpayer money spent on revitalizing neighborhoods goes to historically white neighborhoods while street lights and road conditions in predominately black neighborhoods are in serious need of repair, but who cares then right. If Mr. Stafford chooses to spend his money to let poverty-stricken and terminally ill black Americans be a part of the inauguration of the first black president in the history of this country who are you to complain, it's not like he is using federal dollars.

I agree with most of the posts on here. This is the kind of thing President-Elect Obama said his campaign was about–not only what he could do, but what we could do. He was hoping to inspire all of us to work on behalf of others, to care for others, to do what we could to improve the country and the world. Mr. Stafford answered his call. God Bless him for giving ordinary Americans the chance to participate in history.

Um... why was Mr. Stafford's race pertinent to this article at all? The fact that it needs to be pointed out reveals that there are still some very deep racial divides in this country, and charitable things like this are going to be overshadowed by the inevitable racial questions:

- What if he only allows blacks?
- Is it bad if he chooses to only allow blacks?
- Is it not as charitable if he hand-picks who to give the packages to?

Criticism #1: For those of you who feel that the money could have been put to better use – I disagree because an experience such as this will surely positively impact each person’s life and carry them on to better times. Giving people hope and a reason to believe in this country again is priceless.

Criticism #2: I don’t care what color the people selected are, but I hope that some of the people who were left destitute in New Orleans are selected. Katrina was one of the most disgusting events in our history (in my opinion, second only to slavery).

I take my hat off to this wonderful person. Everyone else is riping everyone off. Why do people and businesses have to raise the price of everything everytime there is a big event. The rooms, food and everything else is not any better then it was at the regular price before the event. This country has become so greedy it is sicken. With the way everything is we should not be spending the thousands of dollars it is going to take to do the inauguration. I think that is very nice. I wonder if Obama thought of this for the little people who contributed. I mean, the little people like me, and others who contributed $25.00 and $50.00 and live paycheck to paycheck who really could not afford to contribute to his campaign but did. Did anyone ever consider opening up a stadium or some other venue where there are big screen TV for the poor folks? Obviously, if you don't have money, you can't be apart of the festivities.

It is truly sad to see someone putting so much time and effort and money into something this uneventful. There is a reason that you can watch this on television, need not being a spectator. If this gentleman truly wanted to make a difference he would have donated this money to a society that has a worthy cause rather than blowing it on a hotel stay and some fancy dresses. There is so much suffering and so much hurt in this nation that could be aided with this donation and would show benefit and make a difference. I applaud you for your generosity, but am saddened that it is not for something more worthwhile.

I simply don't understand how anyone can be mean and cynical about this. There are too many people out there who are way too concerned about making sure no one is getting some goodie they themselves are not getting. I saw it here when the grocery workers were on strike – people saying "my benefits at work aren't that good, so why should these people have better benefits than I do?" It is sort of "My life sucks so yours should too." Here, this man is providing some people an incredi8ble experience. It makes me sad to think anyone could find something to be mean about.

He could have bailed out some people loosing their homes to foreclosure...it shows more practicality to his own spending.

Thats true but for some of these people, terminally ill, disadvantaged, or the people who were wounded fighting for our country. It wouldn't matter one bit, even if I had the wealth of Bill Gates, I would not waste my money on that party nor will I waste my time watching it on TV or reading about it in the newspaper. Life is to short for me to wasre it on useless hype. "Change" anyone?

What a wonderful thing for Mr Stafford to do it will be a day they will never forget, to anonymous who said the money would be better spent buying them food that's true... but for one day in there lives to live the dream gosh we should not take that away from them. Yes there are alot of family's hurting so do what we are doing find a local charity and go help a family by buying them food and clothing this Christmas time with stores selling everything for more than half off we can all do our bit.

I think that what Mr. Stafford has done is a wonderful gesture towards a group of well-deserving individuals/families. We all recognize that these families have other needs, however, sometimes it is such a blessing to be removed from your everyday circumstance. A lot of us have never had to live with day to day poverty, hunger or disability, so we can only speculate. God has blessed me and many of my fellow posters so that we do not have to face these trials everyday (or in some posters' cases, they no longer have to face these circumstances). Let these people have their moment to shine, it will be a memory of a lifetime.

May God continue to bless and keep them all and Mr. Stafford, as well.

How sad that some readers felt compelled to be cynical about this, that they can't see that giving a day of dignity and celebration to the disadvantaged–even if it gives only temporary escape from the stress of their lives–is a beautiful, selfless gift.

Sure the money could have been spent on more "long-lasting" things, but think of how much this will stick out in someone's mind. This will be something they carry with them forever. One special night that they might otherwise never get. I think it's a great idea.

Outstanding story! It's great to read something good in the news. Wish there were more people like him... such a noble thing to do.

I'm sure terminally ill patients and wounded vets would've been better servied if all that money was donated to charities to find cures for the patient's illness and to treat the vets. What a waste! Shows where this guy's priorities are...and I bet, he'll only give the golden ticket to certain "kinds" of people, if you know what I mean....

Who cares what the money could have been spent on. He could have just kept what he had, but he CHOSE to allocate the cash for that particular experience. I say more power to him. The GOP is against the government taking more of their money and then choosing how their money should be spent. Wonderful indeed. But I can't help wondering if Mr. Stafford's generous gesture is reserved for the minority/black disadvantaged or does it include poor white Americans in its sweep. Fifty years of minority focused government policy has brought deserved and equitable change for minorities but only if you're a non-white minority. The double standard still exists, only it's reversed. I once saw a (white) man bring his wife into the ER for medical treatment–he said he hadn't worked in a month, that he lived in a tent with his wife in his mother-in-law's back yard, had no money–and even after hearing his plight the (black) hospital worker gazed steadily at the man with an "oh well..." look and said because he HAD been making 2.75 hr he didn't qualify for free help. He'd have to pay. He took his wife and left. I had to wonder then if the ER packed with minority's also had to pay for their treatment. This wasn't a private hospital either; it was Ben Taub Hospital which served the poor and indigent. I lived in the south for over fifty years and watched a slow, painful transformation of attitudes. But it hasn't all been good. Whites will never be called "minority" no matter the disadvantages they face. It's a bit unreal to see a white person struggling to survive, unable to qualify for government benefits because he's not considered a minority and for a minority to all but laugh in his face with a smirk that seems to say "yeah now you know what it feels like". If that's the way a minority really thinks I have to wonder how much has really changed. President-elect Obama and men like Mr. Stafford have an unparalleled opportunity to show us the fight against racism is working by covering ALL American's with the same blanket of hope. If this sort of thing doesn't happen in your neighborhood, your state, a huge high-5 to you.

I applaud Mr. Stafford's efforts. I personally am not an Obama supporter, but recognize the historical significance of this day, and am proud that I am from a country that has moved past the color of a person's skin. To the person that posted regarding change, I would submit to you that this country has always been a great and gracious country. This change is not change created by President Elect Obama, but rather a much larger recognition of extending beyond racial barriers. I would also point out that we are in a recession, and that in the past, regardless of the president, Americans as a whole have always stepped up to the plate to raise our country. Remember Victory Gardens and Rosie the Riveter. So, while this is an incredible story, and it is touching to see the kindness of the human heart, let's remember that this is a person in America working to make a change, not President Elect Obama.

I am truly amazed at the greatness people are able to exhibit despite the bitter taste of our current situation. Its a bittersweet era we are experiencing here and I am glad to call myself American.

Where's the change?

I was in line the other day at McDonald's and the person in front of me paid for my order! I had never met her and do not know if I will ever see her again but I was extremely touched by her kindness. I decided to "pay it forward" and did the same for someone at a different store a few days later. What I came to realize was although I was moved by someone paying for me, it felt even better to help another person. Congratulations to Mr. Stafford and all of God's angels here on earth!

I think that it is wonderful what Mr. Stafford is doing. He has the right idea. I am a physically disabled senior and I am lucky if I get out of the house twice a year to go to the doctor because I have no transportation.

This is a true example of human kindness. Now that the election is over we all need to come together as a country and get past our differences.

When I read this article I got a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. This is truly a man of GOD. He has studied the Bible and follows the teachings of OUR HEAVENLY FATHER. When I think of the many wealthy people (there are no absolutes) who call themselves christians who don't want to pay taxes, or pay a decent wage, only care about money it makes me wonder if they ever read Matt:24-25. P.S. Something tells me that Mr. Stafford is also the kind of person needed in many of these huge companies that have lost sight of the grand scheme. Thank you Mr. Stafford. What you are doing is the reason I served in our military. Because that would only happen here. And without this great country, people like you would not exist.

Thank you for doing something that we all should be doing. Thank you for spreading the American dream. Thank you for saluting the volunteer veterans of our military in a way that does not patronize them in exchange for self gain (as many politicians have done recently.) And thank you for recognizing the wounded and their irrecoverable donation to the ideals of freedom world wide.

And so thank you for not only being yourself, but for perpetuating the cycle of the American Dream. Perhaps some day I too will have the resources to give back to those who now protect me and to those for whom the dream has not yet come.

The Inaugeration is little taters, I'm waiting for the reaffirmation of his campaign promises signaling our recovery. We must face facts that this is not a normal inaugeration nor normal times. They'll be time enough for partying after the job is done.

As we continue through this purging period I am beginning to see the need for the economic turmoil- to cause us to rethink our true purpose in life. What a wonderful thing to do. I tried to get a room so that my boys and I could witness this momentus occasion, but sadly my wallet could not accomodate the travel costs. Thank You Mr. Stafford for making so many people happy.

It is heart warming to know that people like Earl Stafford still exist today. I know that there are many philantropists out there who do so much good work. But to actually include the disadvantaged and the marginalized in such a historic event that many people will "die for" is truly amazing.

It's easy to see why he is so successful – just the fact that he was smart enough to rent a bloc of rooms early on is a good indicator but then add the return via Karma for giving to others who are less fortunate. I too voted for Obama but do not agree with all of his policies, but I certainly like his principles better than any other candidate I've seen.

That is such a nice thing to do for the less fortunate! This is going to be a grand and certainlyl historical event. I plan to attend and am very grateful I will be able to attend without the millionaire's help.

What a good person; I wish the media would focus more on people and things like this. Knowing that someone like Stafford is out there just about made my day.

I'm in favor of anything that gives an opportunity to the veterans and the voiceless to play a role in an event that is supposed to be a celebration of US democracy. The peaceful transfer of power from leader to leader, especially during a change of the political party in power, is the benchmark we should be setting for the world.

I worry for our country when I see only the rich, powerful, or connected people getting to attend the functioning parts of our democracy. While this is just one man, one rich man, I applaud his efforts to give a place in the process to the people who normally wouldn't have the options or ability to be there.
