Caroline Kennedy's name is being talked about for Clinton's senate seat.
Caroline Kennedy's name is being talked about for Clinton's senate seat.

(CNN) - Could Caroline Kennedy, considered to be among the most private members of the Kennedy clan, be tapped to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate seat?

Kennedy - who endorsed Barack Obama in February before the Super Tuesday round of primaries - is said to be considering the possibility, according to an ABC News report.

New York Gov. David Paterson, the man tasked with picking Hillary Clinton's successor, is remaining mum on the process, but a spokesman for Barack Obama issued a statement in the wake of rumors the president-elect is quietly lobbying Patterson to choose Kennedy.

"President-elect Obama has a very high regard for Caroline Kennedy," said Obama spokesman Stephanie Cutter. "But he has not spoken with Governor Paterson or Caroline Kennedy about the race, and has no involvement in this process."

Earlier, similar rumors circulated that former President Bill Clinton might be interested in the job, but the former president's office quickly released a statement saying he was not interested.

Caroline Kennedy's cousin, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., was also discussed as a potential successor, but formally took his name out of the running earlier this week.

Paterson still has a strong bench to choose from. There are a number of contenders, including several members of New York's delegation in the House of Representatives, New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, and Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi.

Whoever is chosen would have to be ready for virtually non-stop campaigning and fundraising over the next four years. Clinton's successor will face a hotly-contested campaign in 2010 to fill out the remainder of her term, then a re-election bid jut two years later.

What a horrible idea!

If she is appointed just because she is the daughter of John F. Kennedy, and that would be the only reason, then Gov. Patterson should be recalled, fired or impeached!

She has never held elected public office, and were it not for her family name wouldn't be considered at all qualified for the job.

The uber-Liberals in the Democratic Party are clearly out of control!

I think Caroline would do a much better job than you-know-who has done. For one think she will listen to Uncle Ted who has some good ideas.

caroline is not senate worthy. Obama will be a one term president.

I bet JFK is rolling over in his grave. Nowadays his policies and positions would be considered more conservative than Mike Huckabee's. There is no doubt he would support Sarah Palin's ideologies over daughter Caroline's any day of the week.

OK– I want to say something to those comparing the Kennedys to the Clintons....

Hillary Clinton worked for everything that she and Bill had. The Clinton "clan" is not the Kennedy/Bush clan. This isn't a legacy she was handed from Bill. His accomplishments were HER accomplishments. They got there together. If Chelsea suddenly gets into the act–I think she probably will–well, that's another story. File her with the Bushes (including HW BUSH, son of Prescott) and the Kennedys.

In Illinois, we have Richard J. Daley (son of M.); we have Atty Gen. Lisa Madigan (Daughter of House Speaker Mike Madigan); We have Todd Stroger (installed when his father John became incapcitated)...we're soon to have the son of the majority leader take his spot. People just kind of smile–sort of like the Caroline Kennedy supporters. It's so anti-democratic, I wonder what our forefathers would have thought.

Well, except for John Adams. I suspect he would approve!

To all the bloggers who don't think she is qualified, why don't you run for office? She is more qualified than any of you. You might do some research on her before you make any comments! Geez, this country is full of IDIOTS!

Soldier 4 OBAMA   December 5th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

With what she had to live through it would be fitting that she would replace Hillary and I am certain in 2016 she would become President if she chooses too! SHE DESERVED THE POST. A QUIET PROFESSIONAL, THAT IS WHAT SHE IS!

I am really tired of the talk over who has the resume and who doesn't. The truth of the matter is resume, citizenship, motive and other things only came into play because of Obama's race. As soon as everyone admits that to themselves, the better. Many people are discrediting Caroline's resume but cannot name what they think Caroline should have to be a Senator and they themselves cannot stand up to that level of scrutiny in the first place. A solid education is a good thing, not a disease, and no one should be comparing it to the likes of Hilton or Palin. That right there is a disservice to women at a large. Almost every negative post on CNN is gender or race based and it is getting pretty annoying. Women are not a monolithic group and some can be qualified while others cannot. Caroline has the making of a great Senator and to the person spitting "election" as a comment, it is law that the Governor chooses a replacement. To the person mentioning Spitzer, you should be ashamed of yourself saying that man should be placed in a position....only if the people at large choose to re-elect him for something else then I guess NYers will stomach that but no way should be be appointed to anything. And to the person calling Obama a liar...I want you to sit down and think about the REAL reasons your feelings are so negative to someone who is not in office yet. Change is more than slapping random people into positions, again, as I comment on every post, it is a change in vision, direction, goal, moving to positive over negative. I challenge the haters to read The Audacity of Hope before you start judging someone over random spew you may read on opinion based sites and not fact.

Ideal choice...

Thinker   December 5th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Caroline has been raised in a ppolitically active family motivated to
serve. She has an excellent education, has served others in many
ways such as improving the schools in New York. She has studied
the foundations of our country, and has knowledge of our laws.
She is poised, articulate and knows how to analyze and make
common sense decions. She cares about others. While some
"experienced" senators need graft, etc. to make their decisions,
Caroline doesn't need graft. I am certain she would rate much
higher than many of our current senators who have many years
of experience sucyh as Ted Stevens. Caroline has never been
involved in any scandal.

Blue balloons   December 5th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

And what exactly qualifies her to be a U.S. Senator?

Family name, just like what qualified George W. Bush to be governor of Texas, even though he failed at everything he ever did.

Only difference is, Caroline is not a lifetime failure.

Caroline's father was a president....

That makes them qualified in the Dumbs eyes..

WHAT A JOKE!! LOL

Rob Johnson   December 5th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

The Kennedy name may not qualify her for the position, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't win.

I see your point, but the simple reality is that all she has to do is run and she would win easily over any possible Republican. This is New York we're talking about.

libssuck1   December 5th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

This is just a media pitch for Caroline. Nobody has heard of this until the media invented it. This woman isn't into politics and she isn't a politician, let alone a crook like Cliton. Leave this poor woman alone.
The idiot media wants to create garbage, we need to silence the media freaks like Piglosi wants to silence talk radio.

GuyInVA   December 5th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Once again, the question of being "qualified" rears its ugly head. The Constitution determines who is qualified. We have redefined qualified as attributes we as individuals deem worthy of election. During the campaign, I quickly got sick and tired of hearing who was and was not qualified for the presidency or vice presidency. As for those of you comparing Ms. Kennedy to President-elect Obama, Governor Palin, President Bush, or whoever, TSL hit the nail on the head: each of them were elected... not appointed. Hopefully Gov. Patterson will take political experience into account when naming a senator who will not have received a single vote from the people he or she will represent.

These things you sheep used to respect, but she isn't part of the chosen ones circle of friends.

Caroline has done what exactly, besides being a Kennedy and being nice and going to charity events and sipping champagne?

I LIKE Caroline and respect her, but again what qualifies her for the JOB of Senator?

Take off those Obama and everyone around him is sooooo great blinders, it is getting old already.

Clark   December 5th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Caroline Bouvier Kennedy is highly qualified to be United Sates Senator and represent the people of New York state. She has earned respect and made a positive difference in her own right. The lives of so many New York City school children have been touched by her hard work and dedication to the public schools sysytem and education in general. Her education and lifetime of experience will serve her well in the Senate. Those who compare her to the ditz Palin and airhead Hilton have abviously not read up on all Ms. Kenneedy has done and achieved in her lifetime. They are obviously still upset about the election...

susie   December 5th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Ugh,
Just to let you know, the President with the LEAST experience in government was: Abraham Lincoln.
He was the only president with no experience as a governor, senator, Cabinet member, general or vice president. Lincoln’s previous experience in public office consisted of one term in the U.S. House, several terms in the Illinois Legislature and a brief tenure as postmaster of New Salem, Ill. He was also an unsuccessful merchant, a successful lawyer and twice an unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Mary - a lifelong Democrat   December 5th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy seems like a decent person who has lived her life with integrity. She went to law school, she’s written a few books, and she is devoted to her family.

However, it is beyond comprehension how being a nice person qualifies her to join the US Senate. What has she ever run for??? What political cause has she devoted her life to? (maintaining the family name doesn’t count). What has she done??

Here’s a question: has Caroline Kennedy ever had a real job – you know, the kind that you have to go to every day or else you get fired?

If the only reason for getting the job that a person can point to is that they are a member of “the lucky sperm club”, then maybe the job should go to somebody else.

You know, someone whose decades of work experience and public service make them a qualified candidate for the position.

Just saying.

IndyVoter   December 5th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Hey Robert,

Did you graduate from Harvard? Do you have a law degree from Colombia? Are you a lawyer? Have you ever been the CEO of an organization and dealt with budgets, human resources and the like? Have you eaten, breathed and lived a life of politics since your youth? If so, then you are in good company, because so has Caroline Kennedy!!! So then your answer is YES!! Both you and Caroline are qualified to be a US Senator.

lonnette33   December 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Isn't it like the Kennedys to think they are entitled. And some what to talk about the Clintons "ambition". Please. The Kennedys are ridiculous.

GraystoneBeatle   December 5th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Think about the 2004 (yes, 2004) election. Know who was the most experienced candidate?

Dubya's second term did amply show,
It's not just experience, you know.
With four years he'd banked,
The economy he tanked,
His gray hairs didn't help us, for sure.

What you need is intelligence, judgement and competence. That, and the right ideology ... I mean left ideology.

lonnette33   December 5th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Can't stand the Kennedys (Teddy). However, Caroline is a good woman. I do line Robert Kennedy Jr. But Caroline needs to stay on the philantrophy side things. She's no politicians that for sure. Terrible choice.

Pam   December 5th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Caroline's resume is quite impressive She is a Harvard University graduate and advises the Harvard Institute of Politics. She is also a Columbia Law School graduate, has written and edited many books and is a remarkably intelligent woman but I think she should stay out of the Senate as it is just not her calling.

Dianne   December 5th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I believe Caroline is a superb replacement for Hillary Clinton. She is very well educated, knows how to speak to the public, and has been around politica her entire life. I can only imagine some of the debates around her family that she has listen too. Also, I am sure Jacqueline Kennedy her mom, taught her many things about politics having lived her life before the public. These are things that put her above the curve and she will not make those mistakes. I believe her education, her life experiences more than make her qualified. I hope if Caroline is offered the position; she takes it.

Enitan   December 5th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

That would be wonderful, she just like Hillary care deeply about little people.

Chelsea Clinton should take her mother's senate seat until the election. (She'd be a super campaigner/fundraiser too!)

Wizard from San diego   December 5th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Let me get this straight, Experience? So I guess people like Stevens (that have been in the senate longer than my natural life) are more qualified than Caroline, what a joke....it is because of the "experienced" political dinosaurs that this country is in the shape it currently is...Caroline's father presided over an age of enlightenment in America, it is only fitting that she would be part of the process that gives hope back to our country after eight years of moral corruption and the systemic destruction of our national essence. I bet that people in the right would keep their mouths shut if people like O'Reilly or Hannity ran for congress just because they talk about politics in their own twisted ways. We had to deal with Bush for eight years..It is time for our country to get in the path of rehabilitation. GO FOR IT CAROLINE!!!!!

Jeff - Tulsa, OK   December 5th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is extremely well educated, intelligent, well-spoken, and a person of high moral character and integrity. She would make a fantastic Senator. So of course the righties don't think she is a good choice. What else would you expect from the crowd who reveres bush??

To gw bush, if you happen to be reading this: "integrity" means you're a truthified person, and to "revere" someone means you think they are way good.

I want the demographic that is most like me   December 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Tom D'Angora   December 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Anybody but her. She isn't worthy of Hillarys hand me down pantsuits let lone her senate seat. We new yorkers have been spoiled, for 8 years we've had the best senator in the U.S. If a Kennedy is going to replace HRC it should be one that supported her like Bobby Jr. I know there are millions of huge Hillary supporters in NY that will do anything they can do make sure Caroline Kennedy isn't rewarded for stabbing Hillary in the back. So many of us will max out and volunteer and canvas for who ever runs against her in 2010...

I do not live in New York, but I believe New Yorkers would be very fortunate to have Caroline as their Senator. She has endured past family crises, has been private in her charitable works, does not seek power or fame or fortune, and has grown into a mature, intelligent and sincere woman who loves her country and wants to serve. I believe she would be an excellent choice.

MLH   December 5th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

She is a brilliant woman. I'm not sure she would want the job, but we would all be better off for her taking it.

Josh   December 5th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

First of all, I have no idea how people can put Gov. Palin's and Paris Hilton's names in the same sentence, like I just did. (SHIVER).

And to the person who listed all of Caroline Kennedy's accomplishments – Gov. Palin HAS done a lot more than that.. Like – um – running the state of Alaska? She came from a normal American family and went to college and became a mayor (without any special treatment just because she's related to a bunch of politicians, like Ms. Kennedy) then became governor. And she's done extremely well and could tear Congress apart when dealing with energy reform. She has over 25,000 employees as governor and has so much more executive experience than the man we just elected to – well, basically be the most powerful man in the world.

Caroline Kennedy got all those HONORARY positions that are listed (the NAACP, the Harvard Law Institute, and (oh good gracious) the Ballet) BECAUSE OF HER LAST NAME! She is on all of those boards because she's a Kennedy. That's it! She's not special! She got handed those positions – she didn't work for them!

TSL   December 5th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

This is insane. We are talking about the position of senator from one of the most important states in the country, not a feel good media story. There are plenty of people in this country that graduated from ivy league schools but that does not qualify them to be a united states senator. Her biggest accomplishments are president of her own family's foundation (i am sure she had stiff competition for that position) and being a director, honorary chairperson or "adviser" for various irrelevant not-for-profits. Shouldn't the position go to a well deserving ELECTED politician, perhaps one of the top NY state legislators who was ELECTED by the people of New York state.

Chipster   December 5th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

To Ugh...

Flimsiest resume? You need to do some research before making such statements. President-elect Obama has a far better resume than most, especially our current President. His education is outstanding. His years of public service and work ethic prior to and including the IL and U.S. senates qualify him for the position. Caroline Kennedy has a resume that will stand up to anyone. Sounds like you've been reading too many of phony and inflammatory email campaigns instead of researching reliable sources.

catherine   December 5th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

What kind of experience did those guys in 1776 have? The requirements mention residency and age and the like, but not, "have you already been a US Senator, or other elected official in the past? Anyone who is "eligible" is also "qualified". That's how new people step up. Her education and experience qualify her, just like I'm qualified. I personally also believe she would represent NY very well. You'd be lucky to have her in DC.

Rob Johnson   December 5th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

If she wants it, it's hers for the taking. It's hard to picture somebody with the last name Kennedy losing a Senate race in New York.

Given Ted Kennedy's failing health, it's worth asking: When was the last time there wasn't a Kennedy in the Senate? JFK was elected in 1953, but I think there was a gap between 1960 and 1962, when Ted first got elected.

With Caroline's support of Obama, it would be a rich irony if she does end up replacing Hillary in the Senate.

Brandon   December 5th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

I really do not think the New York Governor should give the seat to Caroline Kennedy. It should go to real New Yorkers.
If the Governor does, the next governor of NY will be somebody else and not him.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   December 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy grew up around politics. I'm sure she knows a lot more then the comments here give her credit for. She is not like the other Kennedy's you don't hear any scandal about her or her children. She is well educated and always conducts herself like a lady. I would vote for her. I wish her well no matter what she decides to do.

Meka   December 5th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

For all the Post . . . requiring EXPERIENCE!

GW BUSH had experience . . . and look at THAT RESULTS!

Carolyn would be a great choice, as Senator. She brings LOGIC, apparently something MOST AMERICAN'S ARE LACKING . . . they allowed BUSH to be SELECTED **TWICE**!

sam   December 5th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Great-More change we can believe in. Isn't Chelsea available? How about young Barbara Bush? There must be someone from a established political family to carry on the nepotism which controls our political system. I know, let the Obamas buy a home in N.Y. and Michelle can fill the seat with her ample behind.

Anonymous   December 5th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

@ John 11:49am:

Why do you blame Obama for everything!!! I mean really, it is supposed to snow here in the east tomorrow. If it doesn't, is that Obama's fault too. Get a grip.

white female   December 5th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Thanks to James, Chris, and all those with some knownledge of fact.
It is so shameful for those who compare her to Sarah Palin, and Paris.
She will make a great law maker, She is so refined, and has such moral upstanding, and has done a great job of raising her Children unlike someone we know (Sarah Palin, low life standed) get over it people of right wing haters.
Clean up your own backyards, get a life for a change and stop falling for (o) zero's and pick hero's for once in your life time.

New life, new beginings, OBAMA/BIDEN & Company 08-20016

Karen, Arkansas   December 5th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Larry
This is absolutely insane, are the only qualifications for Democrats in political office their last names???Doesn't an important job like Senator require some experience, you just elected a Democratic president that is doing on the job training, what are you thinking????

Are you referring to Dubya or Jeb?

Silence Dogood   December 5th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Are Obama followers programmed for or against Washington dynasties now?

Robin   December 5th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Of all the Kennedy's she has demonstrated tremendous integrity and humanity in her work and books published. I have wanted her to serve our country for a long time because I feel like I can trust her. I believe she shares the ideals of RFK much more than any other Kennedy in the public eye.

Rick   December 5th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

She's a loser.

Sharonella   December 5th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Come on. Get real. Obama patronage should not win the day. Let's give the Kennedy charisma a rest, and bring some serious contenders to Hillary's old position.

Mike, Ohio   December 5th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

I love that woman. She would be perfect for the job. She’s intelligent and knowledgeable of how Government works, Caroline Kennedy 2016!!

giri d   December 5th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

To all those who has written against the Caroline Kennedy I can say that this great country of U S of A is going to DOGS and indications are what has happened in last eight years and the candidacy of likes of SRAH PALIN and people promoting the morans like JOE the Plumber.
Kennedy has lost a generation in the service of this nation. inspite they have continued to serve the country.
We need intellectuals not the DUMMIES.

Lala-Waxhaw NC   December 5th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Not caroline, I think Robert

LLW   December 5th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

ANOTHER KENNEDY REJECT!!!!!!!!!

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   December 5th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

Democrats, New Yorkers, and all Americans would be well served by the thoughtful, intelligent daughter of JFK. Our country should be so lucky as to have her in the Senate.

Eric   December 5th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Seriously could we stop having the same old families ruling this country and start electing other qualified people who don't happen to come from a well known powerful political family. This is a democracy not a monarchy!

JOHN   December 5th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Graystone Beetle are you actually comparing that list of all be it "decent" accomplishments with being the govenor of the largest state in the country?

Chris   December 5th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is a well-educated, intelligent and articulate woman who would undoubtedly be a fine senator. Those who are trashing her here obviously know nothing about her background and only display their ignorance with their ridiculous comments comparing her to Paris Hilton and Sarah Palin.

Christopher, Madison, WI   December 5th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

We have Obama...you had Bush. Enough said...just take your ball and go home now righties!

Mike   December 5th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Is Caroline Kennedy a resident of New York? And no, I don't consider a "working apartment in NYC"" to qualify as a resident. Does she actually live here? Does she have a NY driver's license? Does she pay (or would she have to if not for a legimate exemption) NYS income tax?

Hillary "carpet-bagged" her way in to the position, but at least bought some property in the state.

If Ms Kennedy isn't, she shouldn't be among the individuals being considered.

Gary D'Orazio   December 5th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

It would be nice to see CNN show Palestinian babies crying for their mothers after having been separated from them by the ISRAEI DEFENCE FORCES. CNN should be balanced.Truth is a form of freedom which Americans love.

Jon G.   December 5th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Well, whatever her "qualifications" may turn out to be it is certainly transparent that being a Kennedy is what has allowed her to be a candidate.

I am willing to see if she bears scrutiny but being a Kennedy is certainly a negative in my book. We neither need, nor can we likely sustain another aristocrat who worships at the altar of the state from some misguided sense of Noblesse Oblige.

And, to simply to point out the obvious, degrees from ivy league institutions are no guarantee, or even any indication of competence, especially from one of such substantial circumstances. I would be far more impressed with a business owner with no degree than a lawyer with many.

If you believe government is the answer then you don't really understand the question.

Greg, San Francisco, CA   December 5th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is highly intelligent and highly qualified but I doubt she would accept the position. She's lived her entire life in the fish eye lens of the press and I don't think she would give up her well earned right to a private, personal life to serve out a short 2 year term in the Senate. The Dems will want someone who will actively and aggressively pursue the seat and the necessary fund raising that goes with it for the 2010 election. Odds favor Andrew Cuomo in all regards – also removes a potential Dem rival for NYGov from Patterson.

JLS   December 5th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Well at least Caroline has lived in NY most of her life, and is not a carpetbagger like Hilary.

Ed Terry   December 5th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Ms. Kennedy gave one of the best speeches at the Democratic Convention considering the circumstances of her presentation. The entire weight of her family rested upon her shoulders and her uncle's appearance and situation also weighed upon her that Monday night. Despite all that, she gave an articulate, forceful speech without a single betrayal of her emotion or burden. A true champion! She would be a great addition to the US Senate.

Christopher, Madison, WI   December 5th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Any US citizen can run for office. We won and you folks on the right lost. It's our party and you are most definitely not invited. You had years in total control (thanks to the republican filibuster machine in the past 2 years). The American people realize that the United States is a "we country" not a "me country". The right's side of division, hate and government waste is has been exposed. Not only did you destroy our economy, you destroyed every other countries' as well. Nice job!
It's time to return to fiscal responsibility. Tax and spend works every time. Only spend what you have. Never run to Communistic China for a hand out.

marcus   December 5th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

I think that the final decision on this would be hers, I like the idea, I think that she would be a very good senator.

Vickie   December 5th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

ONG! Can we PLEASE exist without any more Kennedys, Bushs, and
yes, Clintons? Isn't there anyone out there fit for office that doesn't
have all the baggage that comes with these families? Please, someone new!

Ken   December 5th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Super D said: "Dems obviously don't rate experience very high, just look at Obama." This hypocrisy coming from a ripe neo-tard that supported the inexperience AND incompetency of Bush and Palin.

You rightwing true-believers should not forget that back in 2000 YOU guys pushed aside the experienced McCain and foisted the PROVEN incompetent Bush into office. So, it is YOU [R]s who clearly do not value experience. And now in 2008 you are upset that your own re-tread, McCain, the guy that you yourselves labled 2nd-best back in 2000, did not win our approval? And you attempt to blame us, and how we rate experience, for this outcome? The depth of your delusion is breathtaking!

nnie   December 5th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Can you hear my sigh of relief??? I totally approve of Caroline Kennedy and also Andrew Cuomo.

No Hillary = No Obama   December 5th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Why not.

RBlake   December 5th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

She should have ran for President. She is a wonderful woman and mother.

evie   December 5th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

id like to know who these people who suggest Bill Clinton take Hillary's Senate seat. Thye are beyond ridiculous!! hello? he was PRESIDENT! you know, leader of the free world...why on earth would a former President want to be Senator???? that's just plain dumb.

Tony   December 5th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

There is one thing we all should know to be evident in America: There will always be a Kennedy or a Rockefeller in politics.

Michael, Houston Texas   December 5th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

I have a question for some of you? What makes you think just because a person had not worked in politics all of thier lives that they are not qualified to be Senator etc. Let's look at what would qualify a person to be Senator,

1. Has to be over the age of 30
2. Educated
3. Be able to fairly represent their states
4. Not corrupt
5. No criminal background (well at least have not caught)

And the list goes on. I laugh at some of you because if you were presented the oppurtunity to become Senator of your state, you would jumo on it, and most of you are one step away from "would you like fries to go with that burger". So all this experience crap is just that crap. GWB and Cheney had lot's of experience and you see where we are at. On the flip side of that coin, "The Govenator" Arnold, he was a ex bodybuilder movie star with no political experience and he has done a great job in California. Oh and let's not forget, Reagan was an ex movie star who had no experience either. I know, I know Dems you hate Reagan, but he was one of America's Greats, like him or not.

mike   December 5th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

I have to say I HOPE she gets this position. Mr. Obama is showing masterful politcal skills by placing his FORMER rivals in his cabinet AND endorsing a DECEASED foremer Presidents daughter (lets not forget his name is Jack FREAKIN Kennedy). So yeah, I hope this does happen. It would give some continutiy to the Kennedy legacy. Uncle Ted will not be in the Senate much longer, and it gives the public someone to root for in the Senate. Wow. This guy is good and he has not taken office yet. Go Barak go!

Brandon   December 5th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

As Ted wanes we need another Kennedy in the senate. They are the doppleganger of the bush clan. A family not only dedicated to public service, but to serving the real needs of the nation, serving the powerless.

Bert   December 5th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

How about appointing a Hispanic instead since there are no hispanic senators!

Dorothy in NC   December 5th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

What an incredible great choice. I have been wanting Caroline to get more active in politics. I don't think there could be a better candidate to take Hillary's place.

Godluvr   December 5th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

This disaster was 8 years in the making. It will take time, and a lot more than President-Elect Obama to undo all the wrongs! He is doing his part, promoting and investing in change. Citizens will have to do their parts by staying involved, and pressing their representatives to support the PE's administation. This mess wasn't created in 2 years, and it won't end in 60 days! But we as a people will get there, with God's help!

God bless you PE Obama! We're daily praying for you and your administration!

God bless America!******America, bless God****** (The True Reason for This Season)!

Funkarella   December 5th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Bert   December 5th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Monica   December 5th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Sure is a lot of IGNORANCE on this board!

Josh, Charlotte, NC   December 5th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

I am a Democrat, but I DO NOT believe Caroline Kennedy is qualified to be Senator of New York. She hasn't even been a governor, let alone a mayor!

mb   December 5th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

This would be great, just the kind of person America needs. I hope she is appointed. What is Caroline saying?

Hank Castle   December 5th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Ha ha. Funny to read the sour grapes from the Republicans here. Like George Dubyah Bush wasn't the biggest liar and likely the worst president ever elected. Did he not appoint his buddies and his daddy's buddies to prominent positions? What about that idiot he put at the helm of FEMA, you know, the guy who watched as New Orleans went underwater. I guarantee you Caroline Kennedy is a much safer pick and one in a position to do a lot less damage as she gains experience.

Denise P Quinton   December 5th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Of course Caroline will land a spot in OBAMA's administration but is she qualified enough to replace such an outstanding representative with integrity!
Caroline funded most of OBAMA's campaign and pretty much has been hidden for years but all of a sudden she wants to be involved in politics.........why now?

obama-mama   December 5th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Republicans are such pessimists....I would be a pleasure to have a Kennedy. The blog idiots who compare Caroline to Sarah Palin and Paris Hilton should be arrested

Chuck in LA   December 5th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

"If Al Franken wins in Minnesota, and Caroline Kennedy is appointed in New York, and Chris Matthews runs in Pennsylvania, I think it sets an incredibly dangerous precedent."

You know what else sets an incredibly dangerous precedent? Invading a sovereign nation based on faulty intelligence, suspending habeas corpus, firing US attorneys for political reasons, issuing signing statements, outing CIA agents, and the list goes on and on and on.

kenobi   December 5th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

I love how the moron repukicans broadcast their ignorance whining "what has so&so done" or "we don't know anything about him/her". If they bothered to read once in a while instead of vegging out in front of FOX "news" or neo-nazi talk radio, they'd discover that the rest of the world with brains is very well aware of Caroline's & others' qualifications. Anyone who can't tell the difference between an educated, knowledgable, involved woman like Caroline Kennedy & the dimwit that is Caribou Barbie doesn't deserve a voter's registration card. Please Louise, save us from the idiot right-wingers of the world!

gerri   December 5th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Maybe we can bring back Richard Nixon for all the Kennedy haters on here,he was such a swell guy wasnt he?

Bruce   December 5th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Ok I see a great deal here about experience...look at the mess that people with experience got us into...perhaps new blood with new ideas is what is needed.
By touting the "experience" issue over and over, you are basicly saying that anyone who is not expereinced in politics cannot run for office. A premise that I will argue is short sighted.

HouseDiva   December 5th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Caroline would make a great senator if she were to be chosen for the seat.

Tim   December 5th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

A BIG MISTAKE IF GOVERNOR PATERSON NAMES MS. KENNEDY FOR HILLARY CLINTON'S POSITION.. WE HAVE MORE QUALIFIED PEOPLE IN NEW YORK THAN HER. DO NOT GO FOR LAST NAMES GO FOR THE ONE THAT KNOWS THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK.

WHAT HAS SHE DONE FOR US NEW YORKERS? NADA. SHE DOES FUND RAISE EVENTS BUT WITH THE RICH AND FAMOUS. I NEVER SEE HER IN HARLEM OR THE PROJECTS HELPING THE NEEDY. GIVE ME A BREAK.. JUST BEACUSE SHE HELPED OBAMA WE HAVE TO PAY BACK THE FAVOR? SHE WENT TO HARVARD GREAT BUT A DEGREE DOES NOT MAKE YOU BETTER FOR A POSITION KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE DOES.

MD   December 5th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Bravo GraystoneBeatle... I could have said it better myself...

Steve   December 5th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

There are a significant number of our Senators and other representatives who came into their jobs with little or no political experience, and have managed to do a pretty good job. There are very senior politicians who are in Congress who are doing an abysmal job, and should be removed. We have governors who have the qualification of being ex-wrestlers (Jesse Ventura of Minnesota), and ex-beauty queens (Pain, of Alaska), and they seem to have done OK. Kennedy is intelligent, well-educated, and has moved in political circles for years, as well as being a part of a very well-connected, politically-active family. She is certainly more qualified than some of the people now serving. Let's give her a chance, and see what she can do. If it doesn't work out, Bill "Tantrum Boy" O'Reilly can tell us all "I told you so!"

Kevin   December 5th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Give me a break. The same people who considered Sarah Palin inexperienced and unworthy are now touting this totally unknown quantity. Because she is a Kennedy, it makes her a good choice?????? the Kennedys have done NOTHING of value for this country.

America will be free again   December 5th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

To Ugh...
Just because you can blog free on CNN doesnt give you the guts to talk ill of anyone...If Sara Palin could be Gov of Alaska anything is possible in USA. We have had 8 yrs of A president who cant make a complete sentence in english...which by the way ridiculed the intelligence of highly educated people in this great country. Its time to put educated people in office who can think and see farther than morals and old time principles.

Lake side   December 5th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Many of these nasty comments show that the die-hard Hillary supporters are still very bitter about the election.

President-elect Obama has a 68 percent approval rating, but the bitter fringe elements always have something hateful to say about even well-respected people like Caroline Kennedy.

By the way, what were Hillary's qualifications when she ran for the Senate? Being married to Bill?

James From Chicago   December 5th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Kennedy has never been involved in politics, she has no experience
we have had enough of people that don't know what their doing.in
the senate. Just because she is a Kennedy dosn't make her
qualified. What is Obama thinking.

Greed is not good   December 5th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Her resume is and education is solid. End of story. Her IQ is at least double that of Sarah Palin.

Adam Smith TX, USA   December 5th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Before making negative judgements please do some research into
this issue ... then you won't be "removing all doubt" (re: guessing as opposed to knowing you are stupid.)

Sam, Lincoln,NE   December 5th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Hey Ugh... You seem to have forgotten that the present occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is related to a political family. As the last eight years has shown, he was certainly unqualified for the job. Don't let the facts get in the way of showing the world how ignorant you are.

What's the harm in letting Al Franken, Caroline Kennedy, or Chris Matthews serve? Any one of them could do a better job than George W. Bush. For that matter, my wife's chihuahua could do a better job than Bush.

Danny G. Boca Raton, FL   December 5th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Gov. Patterson will make the ultimate decision. one that will affect New york for the next few years. if they vetted Caroline and she is indeed willing to serve; I believe she will be a terrific choice.

Tony in Oregon   December 5th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

I don't think she would accept the appointment. Caroline like her late mother is a very private person and we should all respect her privacy.

Matt   December 5th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Boy, I wish I had a great family name, connections and rich parents. My fancy degrees, achievements and experience just aren't enough to land things like this in my lap for no reason. Oh, but she's a Kennedy, she simply MUST be qualified to be a politician...a Senator even..after getting a couple of degrees and writing a couple books but having no experience holding office. bah.

eddie   December 5th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

I thought Hillary couldnt accept the position of Sec of State because of the pay increase. Thought she wasnt eligable till 2013?

Kennedy in Wa. State   December 5th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

All the way with JFK was the quote of his campaign, so maybe Caroline's should be CBK(her initials)Come Back Kennedy, which also works just fine!(CBK)

NY you need her more than you know!

A New Day Is Dawning!   December 5th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

She's a fine choice for NY Senator.

Patricia   December 5th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

I'm sorry, but this is getting ridiculous. I actually like the Kennedys for the most part and am a life-long Democrat, but shouldn't one have to have SOME type of legislative experience at the state level before becoming a U.S. Senator? So Carolyn comes from a political family and she attended law school, but she never practiced law, never drafted a bill, never served in any government or legislative office, and in fact has made a point of staying out of the public eye and having no involvement in politics her entire life. Just having the Kennedy name and supporting Obama during the election does not qualify one to become a member of the U.S. Congress. If she wants to enter politics, let her do what everyone else has to do, and start serving at the bottom of the ladder. Put the time in, learn something about how our government operates and THEN run for a seat.

UnitedStates1776   December 5th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy would be a perfect replacement for Sen. Clinton. She has lived in NY for many years, is a very intelligent and well-respected person, and would well represent the people of the state of NY in the US Senate. A perfect choice.

JIM   December 5th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Lets stop speculating, because everyone speculated McCain's VP nominee and we got Gov. Palin. Let's wait and see what actually happens.

Andy   December 5th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Great. Another Kennedy in office. Great promises Obama, more of the same old same old. First we get the clinton admin again and now another name piece.

Sue in MI   December 5th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Why? What has she done politically? She is an excellent editor of her mom's poems and other writings, but what has she herself done that qualifies her to be a Senator? Being born a Kennedy? If that's all that's required, let's give the seat to Chelsea.Let her run for a seat like everyone else...this doesn't make sense.

Daniel   December 5th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Great! A President with no experience. Now a US Senator with even less experience. This is exactly the reason why I no longer support the Democratic Party. Let me look on the bright side, she has not killed anyone, had numerous affairs or raped an underage baby-sitter ... yet!

This country is going down!

Kim   December 5th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Excellent educational background; she has been a thoughtful and intelligent writer. Common sense, low-key. Her qualifications have nothing to do with her family history. Excellent idea, but my bet is she will not accept.

BigVin   December 5th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

YES TO CHOOSING CAROLYN KENNEDY. BY ALL MEANS, YES.

bob in LA   December 5th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Obama is proving he lied before he even gets into office.
More political favors, more insiders in place.
The man for change is the same old song.
I voted for him but reluctantly and did not expect him to dissapoint me quite this fast!

CHECK YOUR FACTS   December 5th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

For those of you who say Ms. Kennedy is unqualified, do yourself a favor and take 5 minutes to do a quick Google search of her. Accomplishments of note: her education, her writing (articles, op-eds, books), her dedication to social responsibility, and the many other positions she's held. If you feel the need to compare, look up stats on other Senators before they were in office. I'd venture to guess she is MORE than qualified, especially technically and comparatively speaking. She is also extremely eloquent and intelligent, has grown up around politics, and is by no means an alienator or divider like so many people on the political scene today. If she wants the seat, I would be very happy to see her have it!
And kudos to Gene for pointing out that "what's funny is that the same people complaining that this Harvard grad isn't qualified to be a senator are the ones that were trying to push Joe the Plumber to run in 2010"– not to mention the ones supporting Palin. How true!! And the comparison of Ms. Kennedy to Paris Hilton is perhaps the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard... in fact, it's downright wrong and insulting. Pity on you for being so misinformed, but don't spread your ignorance to others!!!

johnny   December 5th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Oh stop all the whining and bellyaching! The same people crying boo-hoo, aren't expressing the same disgust regarding Jeb Bush taking another stab at political life. He may be the more talented brother, but he's still a nut off the same tree. It is time for someone else to run the country.

Benson, MS   December 5th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Uhh...Joe the Plumber or Caroline Kennedy....that's a tough one–NOT.

Don't be morons, go with the Harvard grad.

DJ   December 5th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

What we really need are "public servants", not professional politicians. People that are willing to serve for the common good, like school board members, scout leaders, etc. that are willing to donate their time and talent for a term, and then get back to their full time careers. No more elitests, no more politicians that vote in their own raises, no more jobs for life at the public trough!

Eric Warren   December 5th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Eric Warren   December 5th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

She she even live in New York?

j williamson   December 5th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

I'm sure Caroline Kennedy is a lovely person, but should someone be appointed to such a high position based mainly on a family name?

Susan, Macedon New York   December 5th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

I've been hoping one of the Kennedy's would get back into national politics for years now! The family exemplifies service to their country and Caroline is an intelligent and well-educated individual who actually managed to get good grades (unlike our current president)!

The republicans are so terrified that another strong woman will be entering the political arena that they'll say anything!

If you're going to be part of a dynasty, the Kennedys are the family to be in! Unlike the Bushes who are crooked and corrupt to the core.

Pros:

Will probably be helped by Senator Ed Kennedy's staff immediately.
Experience with public speaking, especially during critical times.
Well Educated.

Cons:

Will not have her around to pitch hit for Senator Ed. if he decides to become a full time Life Guard.

Eddie   December 5th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Are you TRYING to make me throw up? Cuomo is the logical choice! Sheeezz!

theresa rossi   December 5th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy would be the PERFECT choice. She defines dignity and service. I am 100% for her to be nominated! YES!!!!!

H   December 5th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

CAROLINE KENNEDY DOES NOT DESERVE THIS POSITION. HILLARY CLINTON IS MUST BETTER. SOMEONE WITH MUCH HIGHER STANDARDS NEED TO BE APPOINTED.

ch   December 5th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

She has done nothing to earn this seat.

Hillary Clinton is a political superstar who worked her heart out for NY over the past 8 years (which is why she won re-election by 69% of the vote in 2006).

Caroline Kennedy is NO Hillary Clinton.

jm for sc   December 5th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Awesome

Nice change   December 5th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I don't think Caroline really wants it.
That clinches it for me, Sen. Kennedy.

Sharonella   December 5th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Yuck. No way. Family name is not a sufficient credential to earn this plum position, and it makes Obama look like he's pushing patronage.

Amber in Orlando   December 5th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Whoever it is, it needs to be a woman. We are severely under represented in the Senate. Out of the 100 senators, there are only 16 women. When Hillary leaves, there will be 15 unless NY Gov. Patterson appoints a female to fill her spot. I hope he doesn't let the women of America down by appointing another man.

Peggy the Unemployed   December 5th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is at least as qualified as many others who run for Senator. Aside from being in the military, what did John McCain do? Or John Kerry or many others. She is educated and knowledgeable. And to compare her to Sarah Palin is a joke. (Although I do think we should give Sarah a break – she is not the anti-Christ.)

chris   December 5th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

The last thing NY needs is another inexperienced politician.

Hillary did nothing in the time she was in office other than collect a hefty paycheck while looking for another job.

It's time the kennedy's simply go away.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   December 5th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I think Robert DeNiro would be a great choice. I bet he could play the role as a Senator better than any of the other choices for two years.

conservatve   December 5th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Good lord couldn't the democrats come up with someone more original with a teensy bit of leadership ability other than Kennedy money ? this country is lost for leadership !!!

Chuck in LA   December 5th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Comparing Caroline Kennedy to Sarah Palin is like comparing steak to the ground beef in my Taco Bell value meal.

Maureen   December 5th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

EEEWWW! Is she going to ask her kids for legislative advice, too? No thanks!

Why is NY going to crown this princess? Is it a monarchy, now? Get somebody with some fortitude and REAL LEGISLATIVE EXPERIENCE, instead of treating this position like the ultimate Christmas present for the very rich and iconic.

At her public zenith, CKS was best at age 3, when she rode horses and said very little. She should return to those activities, and receive the thanks of an grateful Nation.

Debi   December 5th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Can we focus on something more important than dynasties? Why is there no term limit on congress or senate.
If term limits we imposed on congress and senate more would get done and there would be no "dynasties".

Also, Why is Caroline Kennedy "tapped" for the seat? Why do the voters not get to elect whom they want to take this and any other seat being vacated?

This, and any appointment to an elected position, should be handle by special election so the people do not have to put up with an elected official they do not want.

Mike H.   December 5th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

If her name were anythng but Kennedy this would be a joke. She has never run for elective office and has no qualifications for the job.

For those who are raising the issue of Sarah Palin's qualifications, keep in mind that she was elected Governor by the voters of Alaska. That's the democtratic route to public office as opped to getting the job simply because you are a member of a famous family.

Helene   December 5th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

I love Caroline Kennedy but I really don't see her as Senator. Unless she campaigns and gets elected.

TP   December 5th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Everyone wanted change .... here you go.

At least Bush put in qualified people to help run the nation, rather then a popular name with no experience.

Gene   December 5th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Larry.. on Obama's "On the Job Training", he's done more to reach out and work together with people before even being sworn in than Bush has done in 8 years.

What does "On the job training" really mean for a president? All presidents get on the job training.. none of them have experience being a president.. it's new to everyone. So I guess between 14 years of state and US senate.. he's had no experience. That's just a moronic comment coming from a bitter person.

Carolyn has a quality that transcends experience.. she actually seems like genuine person who actually wants what's best for this country. Everyone has to start somewhere.. and I think a lifetime of being in a family that is entwined in politics gives her more experience than most.

How can someone in one breath argue that she doesn't have experience, and in the next complain because she's lived her whole life entwined in politics? Those arguments counter each other out.

FL for Obama   December 5th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Umm...since CNN decided not to post my previous comment...(SURPRISE!)...may I suggest that Caroline is divorced now. But that shouldn't be a consideration for a Senator (like adultery and abuse of power)...I'm just sayin!

Kyle Indianapolis, Indiana   December 5th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I love this idea! Kennedy for Senate!

williefloyd   December 5th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

To mention Caroline's name in the same sentence with Sarah Palin is a disgrace to Caroline! A Harvard & Columbia grad compared to one who can't form a simple, coherent sentence is laughable. There are many forms of "experience", IMHO Caroline probably possesses more than most of us are even aware of.

kay   December 5th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Barack is still asking for $ for his bash – how sick! Doesn't anyone get it that most people are going broke............
He can nominate anyone he wants for the various positions, like C. Kennedy, but the fact remains..........Obama knows NOTHING and heeds people who do have experience and are not just tokens that were voted in on false pretenses.

Elle from Dallas   December 5th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

HRC senate seat should be filled by a person that will represent
the interests of upstate NY residents. Upstate equals all of NY state
except New York City metro area. As a former 28 year resident of Western New York, I would be greatly disappointed if Caroline Kennedy
was chosen.

Don from Jersey   December 5th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

I have been a Democrat all of my life. I have respected and admired the Kennedy family, especially RFK. I have admired the Clintons and I thought that Hillary would have been an excellent president.

If Caroline were given this seat, it would confirm my suspicion that the Democratic Party is becoming loonier and increasingly fixated on money, cronyism and celebrity.

demwit   December 5th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Bozo the Clown could replace Hillary. Big hair, lots of make up and he is a liberal..., right!?

Lucille   December 5th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy? There's a big difference between signing books and being a Senator. I like her fine, however, I believe it would be a disservice to New York to place her in the Senate in a job she knows nothing about. Truth is, Andrew Cuomo is the logical choice in my opinion.

Lana Bushnell   December 5th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Caroline's father was a president, so she is qualified to fulfill a senator's role?

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   December 5th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

The decision belongs to New York Gov. David Patterson. He may surprise everyone.

James   December 5th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

I am sick of hearing this whole he/she is not qualified. Bush was not qualified (Lacked morals and Intelligence). I would prefer to have an "unqualified" intelligent; moral person, than a "qualified" immoral dunce. It’s not like she has no knowledge of politics. Caroline Kennedy seems to be intelligent, well spoken and moral; someone not looking for power but to serve. Who better to serve.

Cher   December 5th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

How can you compare Caroline Kennedy to Paris Hilton or Sarah Palin? Caroline has an undergraduate degree from Harvard and law degree from Columbia. Paris has a GED after dropping out of high school and Sarah took 6 years to get through several community colleges and finally a state university communications degree. They are intellectually not in the same league.

Ugh...   December 5th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

If Al Franken wins in Minnesota, and Caroline Kennedy is appointed in New York, and Chris Matthews runs in Pennsylvania, I think it sets an incredibly dangerous precedent.

Just because you are either A) related to a political family, or B) run your mouth every week about politics on cable news, or C) tell political jokes, doesn't mean you are qualified to be a lawmaker in the upper body of the United States Congress.

Now that Obama has won with the flimsiest resume ever for a U.S. President, it's all style over substance.

RAYMOND   December 5th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy......wow i guess she's owed something for backing another inexperience candidate why break the streak go for it.

Chris   December 5th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

If I lived in NY I would vote for her. She is smart, well spoken and knows when to speak and when to stay slient, politically savy, knows government, has a law degree and knows public policy. She is more than qualified. Would be great if she would.

Dorian   December 5th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Couldn't the powers that be in Albany consider someone for upstate NY for a change. There are many qualified individuals who would be honored to serve and maybe the rest of the state would get some consideration not just NYC.

sara chichester   December 5th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Our country was founded by people believing that it was what you did or what you could do that makes your leadership good for the country.

Not, who owns you,or; what political party wants you as a poster-child,
or which wealthy controlling family you are representing.

To think that we shunned royal families; what will another reign of
Kennedys bring upon us? Yes, they are smart, rich, and supported by the same. But, can they really say they are in touch with the average
American. Or can the average American be owned by publicity and
promises.

DJ   December 5th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

CK? Deserves it? Another elitest from an elitest family. How is this change? Why not have Paris Hilton then. We will never get reform in Congress unless we start electing new and common people. Harvard and Columbia educations are not minimum qualifications for office. How about actually running a business for profit, balancing budgets, etc. ?

GraystoneBeatle   December 5th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy's resume (from wikipedia):
B.A. from Harvard University
J.D. from Columbia Law School

Wrote two books with Ellen Alderman:
* In Our Defense: The Bill of Rights In Action (1990)
* The Right to Privacy (1995)

She has also edited several books and written one on the Kennedy family.

She is currently President of the Kennedy Library Foundation, a director of both the Commission on Presidential Debates and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Honorary Chairman of the American Ballet Theatre. She is also an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics, a living memorial to her father.

Does this sound like Paris Hilton or Sarah Palin?

Ravi   December 5th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

She would be a wonderful senator! Of course, as a Missourian I wouldn't be able to vote her in, but hopefully the people of NY will make it happen. She's absolutely beautiful too.

John   December 5th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Gotta love dynasties, Kennedy, Bush, Clinton, Dole, Rockefeller, throw a real monkey wrench in it and pick a name that no one has heard before. Doesn't the state of NY have any qualified "no-name" State Reps or Senators???

Larry   December 5th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

This is absolutely insane, are the only qualifications for Democrats in political office their last names???Doesn't an important job like Senator require some experience, you just elected a Democratic president that is doing on the job training, what are you thinking????

Gene   December 5th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

What's funny is that the same people complaining that this Harvard grad isn't qualified to be a senator are the ones that were trying to push Joe the Plumber to run in 2010 :)

JerryD   December 5th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

I pray so. If she declines ( Ihope she doesn't) Then RFK Jr. how fitting would it be he would inherit his father's old seat.

Support Caroline   December 5th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Many that have commented here seem to not have a clue as to the woman Caroline Kennedy has become IN SPITE of her name. She has 3 children; she has been married TO THE SAME GUY for decades, she is an attorney and she has written 'In Our Defense', our bill of rights in action; she's a very inteligent woman and has been through hell with her family's legacy. I think she's the PERFECT choice for Hillary's seat. If she wants it.

Caroline Sunshine   December 5th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

i hope she goes for it. shes smart, savvy and would be a success at anything she did. lets face it. bush had 8 years in the same job and would have been canned at my company. so lets NOT talk experience folks.

Anonymous   December 5th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Didn't grow up during the Kennedy era but I'd like if they gave that seat to a woman.

Donna Cunningham   December 5th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

dkc
The public knows little about her. She's a very strong person, very well educated, has written a book and knows how our government works. To compare her to Gov. Palin is the ultimate insult !!

Jay   December 5th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Is she a resident of NY? Just one of things that many of the supporters of this seem to overlook. NOw I know this migh be news to some poeple out there, but this hingy called the CONSTITUTION states taht Senators must in fact be residents of the states they represent. What a quaint idea.

Last Honest man   December 5th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

What a joke our Congress and Senate has become. Some of the most unqualified people I have ever seen. A Male Senator dies....the answer is let his wife finish his term. I mean I know the people in Minnesota are idiots (Ventura/Franken), but come on folks wake up. WAKE UP!!!!!!!

Sara from Arizona   December 5th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

None of these people have an leadership abilities. Gone are the days when we had true leaders. The Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves.

Michael Shea   December 5th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I am a Kennedy loyalist. I worked on the campaigns of Jack, Bobby and Ted.

Despite some of their personal transgressions, they have all been magnificent leaders . They along with their children fight for the forgotten man and woman.

I would support Caroline or Bobby Kennedy Jr. in a river minute. Both of them have made their own mark for mankind. Neither of them are knee-jerk liberals. They use common sense and try to reach concensus on important issues, much like Barrack Obama.

The Kennedy family has paid the price and bear the burden of giving the ultimate price, their lives for our country.

I don't want Andrew Cuomo. He's another Clintonista. If I have one criticism of Barack Obama whom I have supported since the primaries began, he has hired too many Clintonistas to his cabinet. I beleive they caould serve as temporary paid consultants. Obama should hire people independent of the Clintons including Secretary of State.

DOMINICK   December 5th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

her family comes first w/her..she's great super smart..but may not want to leave New York City ...she will work, support in another capacity...

Deborah Marinelli   December 5th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

I so appreciate her work in improving public schools. It's been quiet, efective, and has changed some young lives. Great pick.

California Gold   December 5th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Well I don't think anyone "deserves" to be a member of Congress and I understand the sentimentality Caroline Kennedy evokes. Whether or not she is interested in national politics is a different matter.

"Francie" who has no idea what Caroline Kennedy's adult life, public service, philanthropic involvements and interests are you might try "google" to get up to speed before admitting to all that you live in a bubble.

Republicrat   December 5th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

That's just what we need another senator that will be crying over poor "Teddy, Teddy, I love you Teddy" (R.Byrd) ..........We need to flush the toilet in Washington not add more waste...........WOLVERINES!!! Are ya with me folks.

Raeford NC   December 5th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I'm afraid some nut would try to kill her. There's enough Kennedy haters right here on this blog. It only takes one nut-ball out there with a gun who hates anything Kennedy. I hope she decides not too take the position, then all you Kennedy haters can just shut–the you know what–up.

Bob   December 5th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Why is it the Kennedy family just will not go away. Sure Ted is a good senator but look at his personal life. What a mess. There are way too many of them and they don't have the brains or the work ethic to handle any job. They leave all the work to the hired hands.

Bill Edgar   December 5th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

I have had 3 family members die tragically. Do I deserve it more? or should we base it on something trite like qualification?

Bill
Ohio

jovana   December 5th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

I am a democrat and admired her dad JFK – BUT Caroline has avoided the political arena all of her adult life until after the death of her brother and recently the illness of her uncle Ted. So my question would be what experience does she have? None is my answer. Would she have been elected by the people, I doubt it. So my feeling is that she is not qualified and someone else should be chosen to be the senator from New York. If Caroline wants the position she can run for it in the next election.

Brian, NJ   December 5th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Is she qualified? She's over 30 so under the constitution...yes.

If the citizens of NY think otherwise they can vote for someone else in 2010.

sjf   December 5th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Kennedy is a graduate of both Harvard University and Columbia Law School. She is an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics....to name just a few qualifications.

Why not Caroline for Senator? You don't have to have any qualifications anymore to be in public office. Just look at Obama.

Mike   December 5th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

She's quite intelligent and capable and has been around politics her whole life. Her politics is also in line with the majority of NYers. Who does this remind me of? Hmmm sounds like a certain woman senator from NY who did a pretty good job as Senator for the past 8 years.

Tony in Alexandria   December 5th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

I would hope that Paterson would pick someone from upstate now that the NYS legislature is completely in NYC's pocket. I'm not completely in favor of Mayor Brown getting the nod, but think Rep. Higgins would be an excellent pick.

Matthew   December 5th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

People saying that Caroline Kennedy does not have the experience to be a US Senator are probably that same people dying to put Sarah Palin a heartbeat from the most powerful position in the world. Get a clue...

Having said that, experience shouldn't always be the only criterion used to decide if someone should be eligible for a job. Strength of character, an even temperment and obvious intelligence, none of which Caroline Kennedy is lacking.

RCLGuard   December 5th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is well-known to New Yorkers. She has quietly and effectively led initiatives to aid the NYC public schools among other efforts. She is smart, well-educated and a quiet but hard worker. We, and and other state, would be lucky to have her as a senator.

BROOKLYN   December 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

The OLNY experience this woman has is that she is a Kennedy.

Obviously, the Democratic party wants to groom her to run for President in eight years...

Honestly, choosing her is a joke! A bad joke at our expense.

Drill, Baby, Drill   December 5th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Darn. She probably won't want to tear up the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge beacuse of this $4+ gasoline. Oh wait, it's under $1.50 now..gee I guess McCain, Palin, and the rest of the Republican Oil Barons were wrong - again! Go Caroline, love your genes!

RCLGuard   December 5th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Phil in KC   December 5th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy would be a very interesting choice. But, as noted in the article, she is a private person and I wonder how well that would play out.

Jack   December 5th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Caroline seems like a great person, level headed etc... but what experience does she have...give me a break... why not put in Chelsea ... she has a political name too!!!

Paula   December 5th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

She is a SUPER choice!! Please let RFK Jr be in charge of the EPA!

Bill   December 5th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

The real answer is that dirtbag Obama and most Liberals treat the constitution if if it was worthless. Hillary can not be Sec of State, end of story.

Funny how the libs with failed plan after failed plan continue to change the landscape to suit their selfish, self-centered needs. The Liberals are the cause of almost every major and minor internal problem that this country has ever had. Including and especially the current financial crisis.

Bill Nash   December 5th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

For all of you that have apparently had your heads in the sand, McCain would not have one the election, with or without the ecomonic breakdown, period. McCain was never in it. The short-lived bounce he received after the convention would have dissipated. Palin was/is a disaster. Unless the GOP can figure out how to attract blacks, women and latinos, they will never win again. The majority of american's will be minorities by 2040, leaving the white minority at a distinct disadvantage. The GOP is a white party. So there are the facts. Obama will do a great job. Hillary will be elected in '16 & '20. the GOP will probably have self-destructed by '24.

Joe   December 5th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

What she does'nt know i'm sure her uncle will sure wise her up real quick. Give her a chance like everyone else gets that goes into politics some don't have experience either. Just look at what we have in there today with experience. Nothing,

Al, NY NY   December 5th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Dan so eloquently says.."It's obvious that you only need to be a celebrity to be 'qualified' to be a US Senator (Al Franken). I suppose the day is coming when we'll be hearing about the Rosie O'Donnell and Joy Behar candidacies."...well Dan, how about hearing in the future Elizabeth (the vacuous) Haselback, or Chuck Norris candidacies?

debra   December 5th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Caroline? Give me a break. She was on the team selecting a VP and made a lousy choice with Biden. SHE WAS A LOUSY CHOICE FOR EVEN THAT! What qualifies her? NOTHING!
If she gets the post it is only because of pressure from Obama. She has no credentials. If she wants a political spot, let her run for one like everyone else. CREEPY!

dannie of New York   December 5th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

I think Gov P. should put Condi Rice in that position. NY would lover her! I don't think it's wise to go with another Kennedy especially with Barack so heavily involved with the decision making here. It's best if he stays out of state affairs.

Well why not we have an unqualified Pres. elect.

JTR   December 5th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

I have a suggestion for the NY Senate seat: Cuomo - not Andrew, but Mario! He's be a great choice for the interim period, allowing voters to make an independent selection in two years.

Evan in Chicago   December 5th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Should Ms. Kennedy be interested, she would be qualified for sure.... she meets the requirements as laid out by the rules for being a senator..... just because you may not agree with her positions or ideas doesn't make her un-qualified... just means you don't support her in the role....

ChicagoSuz   December 5th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

She did grow up in New York. On the other hand, apparently Hillary grew up everywhere BUT New York.

I thought she was interested in working for Pres-elect Obama in Washington...

Sherrol in Canada   December 5th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Bottom line is, a Kennedy, any Kennedy has to be rewarded for the unyielding support they bestowed on Pres-elect Obama. The question is, what job would be best suited? Does Carolyn Kennedy really possess the qualifications required to be a US Senator? If she does, then let the deed be done.

LIP   December 5th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Registered Republican that votes like an Independant and I say that Caroling Kennedy is as qualified as the next person and if Ms Kennedy wants the job, she should get in line like anyone else and interview for it. Good luck to her.

Robin in SC   December 5th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Maybe no obvious or official experience, but Caroline is behind the scenes more than most may realize. She's with Uncle Ted quite often and did a great job in her position with the Obama campaign. I think its time for another Kennedy to dive into the political arena and Caroline has the connections, good judgement, common sense, and "the family business" in her favor. She's an "insider" but she's "outside" the beltway...best of both worlds if you ask me!

Bob   December 5th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

I think that she would be a good choice but the Gov. should select a person of color. The U.S. Senate shouldn't be lilly white in this day and time.

Louis in Brooklyn   December 5th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Her Cousin is more qualified. Caroline stabbed the Clintons in the back by folding to her kids and endorsing Pres Elect Obama very early on.
Bill Clinton was very supportive of her family especially during the time of her brothers death / burial. A Navy or Coast Guard ship was alloacted to bury his ashes at sea and maintain family privicy. I recall President Clinton taking a flack for that kind gesture.
Regardless, Caroline has zero experience as a politician except by family name and exposure. she could never get elected on her merits.

gerri   December 5th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

Great choice. The Republicans better find a new name plate, they look and sound like an Edsel car to me now.Rove was right,he just got the party wrong.

Change   December 5th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

Great the woman has no experience at all, but that doesn't matter she is a democrat.

j   December 5th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

I'd like to see Robert Kennedy, jr replace Clinton and Chelsea Clinton replace Robert Kennedy, jr in the House. Got to get the next Clinton generation started.

Actually, I'd like to know if Caroline is qualified. Other than being a Kennedy, what does she know about the legislature and implementing good laws?

SueWKline   December 5th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Let's stop giving people great jobs based on their last name. There are very many New Yorkers who would fit the bill nicely. Just because Caroline endorsed Obama does not give Obama the right to have a say in New York's politics. Ask Governor Patterson who he wants. He is the guy who will decide.

STLouisGal   December 5th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

FYI...CHANGE meant no more repubs in the white house. CHANGE meant no more wars for politcal and business gain. CHANGE meant no more favors for the richest Americans. Get it?

Jeanne   December 5th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Hillary Clinton did not "get" the senate position because of her name. She was voted in. If that was the case, then she would be our president-elect.

STLouisGal   December 5th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

The difference between Caroline Kennedy and Sarah Palin...Kennedy has a brain! McCain was sailing high? LOL! He picked Palin and it was all over. The bitter repubs on here are so entertaining! McCain lost. Get over it.

From New York   December 5th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

I can say that Hilary Clinton has done absolutely nothing for upstate New York, Buffalo had the highest gas prices in the country a few months back and she was nowhere to be found. Her "perceived influence" was just that, perceived. I say, anything is better than her in office, she was an ABSENT politician.

david   December 5th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

I believe we will see a female president in our lifetime. It's not going to be Palin or Clintion, I predict it'll be Caroline Kennedy.

Miranda   December 5th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

At first I tended to agree when people mentioned that Caroline has no experience but then I started really thinking about it and maybe that's what we need....someone who isn't bought out by lobbyists or other political players.....someone to think outside of the box and come up with a different strategies. I mean look what the experienced ones have done and where our economy is. Maybe new faces are what we need. Also, let's not forget that her dad didn't have all that much experience per se behind him when he became a very youthful president.

Gary B   December 5th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

I agree same old faces, families, and politics.

How about nominating Brian Higgens from Westerm New York. I am a Republican but found him to be honest and hard working.

He actually is accessible to the public and looking out for the residents of Western New York. It's only fair that someone down state be part of the solution for New York. I believe he would do for New York what he has done for Western New York .

The whole state doesn't revolve around NYC.

OBAMA GIRL   December 5th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

All you idiots talking about this ISN'T change. The new senator is NOT Obama's choice so please with the negativity! You're lives must really be miserable.

Anway, Caroline doesn't come to mind when I think of experience for this position but at least she's a level headed person and I respect her.

Olivia   December 5th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Oprah should interview Caroline Kennedy to see if she wants to continue supporting Obama as a senator.
I'm glad Palin ignored Oprah after she snubbed Sarah during the election. On the other hand.....Sarah's "natural beauty" may have blinded her and given us a little bit of satisfaction.

BS not Maverick   December 5th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Great Choice!!!

bill c.   December 5th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

it's fine by me... myspace.com/william_jefferson_clinton

Valerie   December 5th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

From Someone who grew up in NY, and currently lives in rochester, ny this would be beyond stupid. she would ONLY get it SOLEY based on her name. Oh wait, isn't that how Hillary got Elected to a state SHE'S NOT FROM? NYC IS NOT NY, ny is Buffalo, Syracuse, rochester, Ithaca, etc. absolutely not, and if i could, i'd run against her, since i'm a republican, and that is what is needed to clean up NY politics as ususal.

NO TO THE CLINTONS, BUSHES, AND KENNEDY'S!! WE NEED CHANGE, NOT BACKWARDS POLITICS.

LYNETTE IN CA   December 5th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

She would be fabulous!

Go Caroline!

Tiff of lithia springs   December 5th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

I don't think she is in politics that deeply. I could be wrong. But is seems she dabbles at her convenience.

All those judging Obama he couldn't possibly do any worse than "W". which will stand for WORST president ever!

Deborah   December 5th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

I would love to see Caroline Kennedy in this seat. She is the most private of the Kennedy's, but that's because she doesn't crave the spotlight, not because she isn't an intelligent, thoughtful, incorruptible individual who would be a great proponent for the people and not let politics and special interests get in the way.

Central FL   December 5th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy would be an excellent choice. She is widely respected and knowledgeable. Caroline's genuine appeal could greatly contrast against Guiliani's shenanigans in 2010.

Cathy Brandes   December 5th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

The change was in policy! The cabinets appointees so far have been excellent choices. How about you let him take office before you judge!
The only ones who should have any comment about Senator Clinton's replacement should be the citizens of New York. The rest of us can stay quiet.

Soccer Nana   December 5th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

I hope she accepts if the offer is made.

Nelson Colorado Springs Co   December 5th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Outstanding for Caroline Kennedy

mk   December 5th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Comparing Caroline Kennedy to Sarah Palin or Paris Hilton is why republicans lost the election, they stil do not have a clue. Cuomo is also a great choice. I'm sure the governor will make a sound choice. I wish I had the same confidence in my own governor here in Illinois. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Nat   December 5th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

She's a dork? My, what a sound and intelligent arguement.

rachel   December 5th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Where's my post? none complaining about the kennedy dynasty noone talking about the skeletons in their family? drinkin, murder etc...

Karen   December 5th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

She is about as unqualified to be a senator as Sarah Palin was to be vice-president. What has happened to us? Don't we have any standards around experience when we make these suggestions? Is it all about star power these days? No No No for the people of NY.

Joe   December 5th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Why not i'm sure she knows about politics as any one else because she has been around it all of her life. I'm sure she can really handle the job very well.

dave   December 5th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

WHY! Hillary is not eligible for the Sec of State job until 2013, nice try!

Laverne   December 5th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

To FreeNLovIt: McCain was never flying high. He never made it past the 50% mark. He did okay following the introduction of Sarah Palin and coming out of the convention, but than again, Obama also got a bump after the Democratic convention. McCain would have still lost the race even if the economy didn't tank. America wanted change and voted for Obama, and most all the undecided voters who did not want to publically admit they were voting for Obama did so at the last minute because they got a good hard look at what a McCain presidency would mean. Sorry, but you are delusional!

rachel   December 5th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

What no one crying about a kennedy dynasty?

Dan   December 5th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is a bright well-spoken woman. She could be a great senator, especially with her legal background and her noteworthy published interests on public policy. And she definitely knows the insides of the party. My sense is that this woman could make a difference. While being a Kennedy is the icing on her cake, she merits this on her own account.

FL for Obama   December 5th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

I think she'd be a great choice!

Pennie Johnson   December 5th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Please Gov. Patterson, give the seat to Caroline. It's hers by proxy anyway. Had her brother lived, HE"D be the Jr.senator not HRC,whom I believe pirated it for a presidential run. She'd be great and have SINCERE interests of New Yorkers in the forefront.

Ron   December 5th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Experience? LOL – who needs it? If Obama can get elected as president with no experience why would she need experience? She couldn't do any worse than the clowns that are already there.

Camelot Returns   December 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Hey,

We could do worse with slimeballs like Stevens and that idiot in the airport restroom. I think Caroline would be a breath of fresh air in the Senate.

Kudos to her if she decides to run. Of course, there goes her privacy, but I think she's probably thought about the consequences.

Rush Lameduck   December 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

She would be a great pick.Maybe she could find that 700 billion dollars Paulson hid.

JOHN   December 5th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

larry in texas....she deserves it? she deserves it? you are supposed to earn things in life....not deserve it

Michael-Ventura,CA   December 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I would LOVE to see her take that position! This just gets better and better! gwb and his cohorts can't leave soon enough!
I think with all the Dems in the Senate and House, it will insure that CHANGE can and will happen!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   December 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Just do it.

Sherri   December 5th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

It would be terrific for Caroline Kennedy to take on the Senate position. She is intelligent, thoughtful and certainly worthy of the job. It is a breath of fresh air to see civility and intelligence returning to America. I thank President-elect Barack Obama for setting that tone.

wait a minute   December 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy has her father's character and courage. It's not just in the name. But we shouldn't ignore other candidates. It's bad for our democracy to recycle the famous people through D.C. like Clinton and Bush.

FreeNlovit Is Not Free   December 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

@FreeNlovit

You're wrong. Barack would have won even if the economy had not tanked. It is racist like you who can't stand the fact that he won on his own merit, so you have to invent some whacko excuse like the economy. Americans rejected John overwhelmingly by 8 million votes, that's 8 million votes. What does it take for you knuckleheads to get it. Barack won because he was the best person for the job.

Get a life–and stop being so mean. I blame your mother for raising you stupidly.

Bring it on, I'm waiting for your reply.

Tony R.   December 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Please, no. If she hadn't vetted for Obama, would Patterson have really thought her worth considering? I think there are better choices in New York to chose from rather than giving away political gift to friends.

strong   December 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

It is the same old faces, the same old families or clans who get these jobs: the Kennedys, the Clintons, ..... didn't someone say something about "change" not too long ago ??

endithinks   December 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Personally I like her, but what are her qualifications for a position as important as New York Senator? I truly think she is a wonderful person; I just don't want celebrity to possibly outshine substance.

Pat F   December 5th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

More Obamatons' nostalgia for Camelot. How sad, really.

Nancy   December 5th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Oh I hope not. Flat out she has no qualifications for the job. She is somewhat of a polarizing figure, after her support of Obama in NY. Bear in mind Senator Clinton is widely popular here, especially upstate.

There are many much more qualified women in NYS government and its Congressional delegation. For that matter, there are far more qualified non-sexist men as well. There's been no mention of Bill Clinton (yes, he can if he wants to) or Congressman Maurice Hinchey, who is also from upstate.

James   December 5th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

What has she done? Another empty suit. She's not qualified, I don't care what her last name is.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   December 5th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Personal to DC Observer:

Caroline Kennedy is very highly thought of by people on both sides of the political spectrum and is consulted, regularly, on all issues by members of both political ideologies. She can put a sentence together and is not a punch line at cocktail parties.

Sarah Palin is as vacant and phony as she appears! You are obviously a Republican – be proud of the future selctions your party has and look no further than the current White House to explain why we are in the mess we are in – you helped elect a drunken, coke-headed frat boy lout to the POTUS. He should never have been allowed to run, let alone get installed!!!

Reality   December 5th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

awesome !!! I can see her becoming the first woman as President someday !!! :)

Brian   December 5th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

yes, yes, yes. A thousand time yes. She is the least tainted of all.

Theresa   December 5th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Kennedy would be wonderful!!

Kennedy For Senator   December 5th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

She'd be an excellent choice. I would vote for her in a New York minute.

Super D   December 5th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

This trying to re-live the 60's and the Clinton Administration has got to stop.

Caroline Kennedy is a pampered princess who does not know a thing. It's about as good as a call as naming Paris Hilton for this Senate spot.

Dems obviously don't rate experience very high, just look at Obama.

nick   December 5th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Take it Caroline we still need a Kennedy in our political lives.

Francie   December 5th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Where has she been all these years???? She's a total stranger
to everyone....and would be appointed ONLY on the strength of her
Kennedy name – nothing more.

That doesn't sound acceptable.

AJ   December 5th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. would be a logical choice. Caroline? Please.

Dave   December 5th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Interesting

Virginia   December 5th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

I hope that Caroline doesn't do it. She doesn't have the experience, and her name doesn't qualify her. But more than that, I wouldn't want to follow in Clinton's footsteps, and I would hate for her to meet a fate similar to the rest of her family, either death or some criminal activity. She is too nice person for that. Don't Caroline!

dan   December 5th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

It's obvious that you only need to be a celebrity to be 'qualified' to be a US Senator (Al Franken). I suppose the day is coming when we'll be hearing about the Rosie O'Donnell and Joy Behar candidacies.

Robert   December 5th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

My last name is _______________! Can I step in and take Clintons seat? My entire family has grown up political...but not really wealthy!!!! not well connected, and not a historical family. But really, can I take Clintons seat? My experience is pretty thin, but really, I could do the job!

chris @ Stl   December 5th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Caroline seems a good fit. We need some one with common sense and not bound by 'ideology' in a time like this.

I have been watching the hearings in congress on auto bailout ... I don't know how some of those congressman got elected. Most of them did not even read the proposal sent in advance by the CEOs. Kept on asking irrelevant and stupid questions .... The person who really irritated me was Sen. Shelby ....

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 5th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

OMG! From bad to worse. Caroline Kennedy has no experience at all. Larry in Texas, bad family luck is hardly a credential for a US Senator. She in no way 'deserves it'. Clinton got the job because of HER family name. Now it's time for someone truly qualified.

Chuck   December 5th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

John, I laugh everytime I hear anyone say anything about Obama being a liar. You must have been in a coma for the past 8 years of the Buch/Cheney liars administration in Washington. Caroline Kennedy is extremely well educated, in touch, and has incredible integrity. She also is a humanitarian, of which I have yet to meet a republican that can make that claim.

Angie   December 5th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

How wonderful that would be. Senator Caroline Kennedy has a nice ring to it. And we know she would do a great job, politics is in her blood.

simmy1   December 5th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

She is as qualified as anyone else to get the seat! Some people's experiences have proven to be nothing more than 'politcal con artist trickery.' They are experienced at playing the game. Fresh ideas, and people who exude change, are being called upon at this time in history!

hjs   December 5th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Creds?

I'm just asking...

David   December 5th, 2008 11:58 am ET

As long as she is like her father and fights the Federal Reserve. Not like the current fat and happy ones.

Empty suit, empty promises   December 5th, 2008 11:58 am ET

So she get's it based on what exactly, her being part of the "chosen ones" inner circle or because she is a Kennedy?

My bad, I should know better than to question the great one and his friends.

I will go back to my job where I get paid and promoted based on nothing but MERIT, I apologize for questioning this.

Please do not post harsh things about me.

chris   December 5th, 2008 11:57 am ET

well, why not–that's what this country has come to. A monarchy. Install the children of Bush, why not more kennedys. Running for election is such a drag.

Retired Veteran from New York City, NY   December 5th, 2008 11:56 am ET

As well known that the Kennedys are, I would prefer the State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Because in just two years, it will be another race for reelection and somebody like Cuomo that just ran a State Wide eclection will have the momentum to maintain the Senate seat.

FAYE, NV   December 5th, 2008 11:56 am ET

That would be wonderful if Caroline took the seat. I love the Kennedy's, a great family.

DC Observer   December 5th, 2008 11:56 am ET

This would be a joke -- The Sarah Palin of the Democratic Party

Dave   December 5th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Carrion. A choice between the Boogie-Down and anything else isn't really a choice.

proudliberal   December 5th, 2008 11:55 am ET

she would make a better sos than hillary.

Patricia Bray   December 5th, 2008 11:55 am ET

This has to be a joke! The Kennedy name does not equal quaification and experience for a political office.

Frank, Dayton, Ohio   December 5th, 2008 11:55 am ET

She has expressed no interest in politics before now; why would she step into the ring at this point in her life? This reminds me that they were supposedly considering her for the vice presidency. While I have the highest regard for the Kennedy family and for Caroline, this notion of her being in the Senate is just plain silly.

Mark   December 5th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Great idea!

PJP   December 5th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Why not, Caroline would probably do a lot better than Clinton. Some of you people can say what you want to, but it is not always about the money! It is about power and the more power someone gets the more they can control. The power is what the Clintons are all about!

Rick   December 5th, 2008 11:50 am ET

And what exactly qualifies her to be a U.S. Senator?

Tracy M.   December 5th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Proofreader looking for work. It looks like you could use one.

I love Caroline Kennedy. I'm not sure why she'd want Clinton's seat, but if her writing is any indication of her integrity and strength of character, I'm all about it!

susie   December 5th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Kennedy should have experience not get in by name only.

JOHN   December 5th, 2008 11:49 am ET

more political paybacks for Obama's friends....change....what a liar.

jim   December 5th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Great news, honestly I hope she is president one day, I think she's a great person and will lead for the better good.

FreeNLovIt   December 5th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Cuomo or Robert will be fine. She's a dork and endorsed Obama for the presidency. She has rotten judgement. She's lucky the economy crashed, otherwise, Hillary would have been right, McCain would have won. He was sailing high.

Larry in Texas   December 5th, 2008 11:46 am ET

She Deserves it, for what her Family has been through, from J.F.K. to Robert in 1968 / to J.F.K.'s boy (airplane death)

Larry
Texas

Lynne   December 5th, 2008 11:43 am ET

No, she won't. I doubt she would take it if offered. How about we wait and see, rather than speculate.

Scott NYC Independent   December 5th, 2008 11:40 am ET

As quiet as its kept – this would be a major improvement.
