Poll suggests Gov. Sarah Palin is a 2012 presidential hopeful.
Poll suggests Gov. Sarah Palin is a 2012 presidential hopeful.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Barack Obama is still more than six weeks from White House, and the next Iowa caucuses are more than three years away — so naturally, it’s time to start talking 2012, as a new national poll suggests that Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee top the list of potential 2012 Republican presidential hopefuls.

In a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey out Friday that serves as an early measure of potential support for the next GOP presidential nomination, Huckabee tops the list. Thirty-four percent of Republicans and independent voters who lean towards the GOP say they are very likely to support the former Arkansas governor if he were to become their party’s nominee in 2012. Huckabee surprised many by winning this year's Republican caucuses in Iowa and seven other contests before ending his run in March.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain's running mate in this year's election, draws nearly as much support: 32 percent of those polled said they would get behind a Palin nomination. And with the survey's sampling error of plus or minus 4.5 points, Palin and Huckabee are statistically tied.

The survey is an early measure of possible support, not a horse race snapshot.

“It might come as a surprise to some that Palin does better than Huckabee among GOP men but that Huckabee beats Palin among Republican women,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Palin's strength is also concentrated among older Republicans, but Huckabee may have a slight edge among conservative Republicans."

Among voters who consider themselves born again or evangelical, Huckabee draws more support than Palin, with a 9 point edge. Meanwhile, Palin holds a 7-point advantage among non-born again or evangelical voters.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is in third place in the poll, with 28 percent of those questioned saying they are very likely to suport him as the GOP nominee in 2012.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich draws roughly the same level of support as Romney, at 27 percent. In 2007, Gingrich flirted with making a run for the Republican presidential nomination, but decided against jumping into the race.

Twenty-three percent of those polled say they would be very likely to support Rudy Giuliani if he decides to run again. The former New York City mayor was the national frontrunner in many polls in late 2007, before performing poorly in the early primaries and caucuses. He dropped out of the race for the White House in late January.

Louisana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who's considered a rising star in the GOP, draws support from 19 percent of those surveyed, and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist 7 percent.

“Jindal and Crist are relative unknowns. The fact that they get much less support than the others is likely a function of name recognition rather than a true measure of their potential base of support," says Holland.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday, with 460 Republicans and independent voters who lean Republican questioned by telephone.

CW "I caught part of Barbara Walter's interview with Tina Fey last night. She seemed to think that her impersanation of Sarah Palin did'nt hurt her at all. I disagree. I did not see the whole thing, but I wonder if Barbara asked if she was a Democrat? I wonder if Tina would like a try at Michelle Obama? Any one think she'd do it? I don't think so!"

Fey is physically similar to Palin and she quoted her WORD FOR WORD.
When Palin's OWN WORDS can be used to mock her with such hilarious results then the problem is with Palin not Tina Fey!

howIroll   December 6th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

In 1976 the Dems mocked the Repubs who claimed Reagan would be their standard bearer in 2000. He totally flubbed debates that year. Dems and moderate Republicans said, "he's too stupid, he doesn't know anything about foreign policy," etc. But he had something no other GOP candidate did...CHARISMA. And he learned over the next 4 years, wrote a book, appeared on talk shows, etc. Who was laughing in 1980?

Palin does have charisma....she has a lot of work to do but if she studies up and gets herself on sunday talk shows, she's got the personality to draw people in.

I adore Sarah, however, she's not where the RNC needs to go.

I agree with almost all of her stances – but then I'm a woman who doesn't belive that I need to be a feminist. I don't believe that we need to kill our babies (I was raped and had my child and gave it up for adoption when I was 21, so NO excuses).

As much as I think she would be a good leader, the majority of the country belittles her and won't support her so no, I don't think Sarah should run – which is a pity, because she has MORE experience than the Osama Obama bin Obamanation that is going to destroy America.

I believe Palin will be aroung a long time. She is newsworthy. an attraction, and has lots of sex appeal. That sells! She could have gone to 6 more schools, and it would not have made any difference. As long as she stays in Alaska, no harm done. In the meantime, there is a country to run, which happens to be in a world of trouble. Pray we get through 2009 before planning for 2012.

Polls at this early stage are probably silly. Still, I find the attitudes to Gov Palin very strange. If we can think of a presidential election as a hiring process, and since this is an executive position, then the first question I would ask of any applicants is; what executive experience have you had, for how long and during that period what have your accomplishments been? And can you vouch for these accomplishments with evidence and references. I am not so much interested in what you say you can do or how you say it, but what have you actually done, and what I can infer about your attitudes, knowledge and skills and how you applied them in practice. Of the four people on the ticket recently, only Gov Palin has had executive experience, although I would give Obama creditt for superb campaign management as a surrogate for such experience. No objective person with a sense of justice can deny that Gov Palin has accomplished much in her short time as Gov of Alaska. And at high personal and political risk. And, given her high approval ratings (still) the citizens of Alaska seem to agree. I am sure that in the process of reform she has made bitter enemies, who will dispute this conclusion. Yes, her executive actions as Gov can be critically evaluated. But the point is that there are actions to critically evaluate. The executive actions of the other candidates are pretty thin on the ground. Nor can I find any evidence that Gov Palin has allowed her personal (and obviously sincere) religious convictions interfere with her work as a Gov. There is no evidence that she has banned books, forced education authorities to teach 'creationism', etc. On the contrary, (and I stand to be corrected on this), i understand she vetoed attempts to rescind same-sex benefits legislation. There seems to be a trend abroad too that only unattractive women should aspire to high office. If a State is a microcosm of the US, then being a succesfull Governor is surelyt he best apprenticeship to high National Office. Time will tell but Gov Palin deserved to be given as much fair and just consideration as anyone else.

Evey other poll out there has Governor Palin leading the other front runners, Mitt Romney, Rudy and others by double digits! Huckabee is at the bottom!

In every other poll of Republicans and Republican leaning independents 60 to 70 percent chose Palin!!

This is just more of the dishonest media trying to to create a story!

Face facts, Palin will be the nominee in 2012. Did anyone pay any attention to Georgia?

Palin was a rock star down there. All of the hitters were down there campaigning for Chambliss. Governor Palin flew in and in ONE DAY drew more people than all the rest combined. And by "all the rest", I'm including Bill Clinton and Rapper Ludacris!

The day before Sarah showed up, Saxby Chambliss had a 5 point lead in the polls, and was gonna win anyway, but Sarah took that 5 point win, and turned it into a 16 point BLOWOUT!

By 2012 Governor Palin will have 20 years of chief executive experience under her belt!

You guys just voted in a guy who has never run a city, never run a state, and never run a lemonade stand! Good luck with that!

On the other hand, while the democrats and their social engineering, ACORN thuggery, and stupid mortgage loans have all but collapsed the nation's economy, Governor Palin is working on Alaska's budget that should have a 5 billion dollar surplus!

And Alaska has no state income tax, or state sales tax!

RE: Annie said
While this is quite early, please, GOP. Please do not continue to alienate conservatives who are conservatives for political reasons, not religious reasons, any further. What's that about separation of church and state?
—————————————————————————————-
What does "separation of church and state" have to do with this? Are you saying that a person of faith has no right to run for office?

------------------------------–

I don't think that's what Annie was saying. I think that the Republican party has been using their position as "the religious party" to pressure people into voting for repbulicans. Also, party leaders have been trying to make it look like people who are not voting for their party are somehow 'less religious' than others. I think this is what has been alienating us republicans that would love to have intelligent, qualified representatives to support. Personally, as a Christian, I am disgusted by the excessive use of the Republican parties "God card" that has been used much like the "fear card" and this has been one of my deciding factors in voting for Democratic leaders.

Mike Huckabee must scare those people to death. They are determined to act like he doesn't even exist.

I think this is terrific news. Convince the GOP that Pailn is a viable candidate, without really thinking about it because it's been hyped for 3 years, and we'll get another four of Obama. True, I cannot see the path he will lead, but it will be thoughtful and intelligent and probably the best that can be expected with the current environment. I cannot hope for more from THE leader of my country.

Rather than bantering about Democrats' elitist math skills versus the Rupublicans' belief that with God's help they can defy the laws of math, they may as well just work together to make this nomination happen and postpone the bantering until about September, 2012.

It seems that for many of her supporters, Sarah Palin’s continued presence serves more as an opportunity to veil and safely spew one’s hatred and bigotry towards President-elect Obama then a belief that she would actually be successful as President.

The notion of Sarah Palin as President of the United States is beyond humorous or funny. It would be an utter disaster.

God help us all. I can't imagine we could be so stupid as to elect Palin or Huckabee. Then again I can't believe Bush was re-elected and that is exactly who Palin is Bush w/breasts. The main difference between Bush and Palin is when Palin is stumped during an interview or debate she flirts with the camera or reporter. We don’t need or want another Bush, especially one that takes advantage of her sex.

James Glynn   December 5th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Only a few weeks ago there was a significant amount of discussion whether or not Palin had the necessary qualifications to be vice president. Talking about a 2012 run for Palin must be the result of the Republicans post election retreat where they were going to reevaluate the parties positions.

As I read all the negative comments left by CNN's readers who are all obviously left-leaning, I'm reminded that this is the party that preaches tolerance and acceptance of all. How can you people be so vengeful? I mean, she/McCain lost, Obama won. You have your victory.

The fact that Obama beat McCain isn't that surprising to me. The Republican party is at an all time low in popularity, and honestly, rightly so. I'm a Republican and the last 8 years have NOT been conservative Republican values. Spending is way high, wars of aggression, civil liberties eroded ....

I cannot imagine another four years of someone that comes off with even less intellectual capacity. So, it's not fear, it's oh my gosh can you believe that Republicans have changed so much that they mirror the Middle Eastern countries in religious zealots? Our constitution is backed by great forefathers who knew that religion should be put aside when it comes to politics.

tony   December 5th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

C'mon folks. Get off Palin already. You Dems won the election. The people spoke. Relish in the victory. Why continue beating up Palin? Ya got nothing better to do than sitting in front of yiour computer waiting for another chance to bash Palin. You guys are sick, sore winners!!

Imagine waking up on Christmas morning and finding the shiniest, prettiest package of all under your tree. Imagine opening it and suddenly realizing that it is completely empty. That is Sarah Palin. Great packaging with nothing on the inside – NOTHING.

John M, Grand Rapids, MI   December 5th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Ron Paul would have beat Obama this election and he could beat him 4 years from now. Ron Paul is everything the Republican Party needs but isn't right now. Honest, Principled, Intelligent, good moral character. Paul/Jindal 2012.

C W   December 5th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

God help the GOP! I have friends and family who are Republicans who absolutely would never vote for Huckabee or Palin. Why? Because they don't want to live in a theocracy run by religious police demanding we all adhere to a narrow interpretation of the Bible, disregarding science and common sense.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks Palin's obssesion with the limelight is a great way for her to avoid all her challenging family issues? Shouldn't she be taking care of her special needs child and unwed daughter instead of galavanting around promoting herself as the next Messiah?

Peter TX   December 5th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

NO Palin in 2012 or beyond   December 5th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

I viewed comments from another fellow Alaskan and I totally agree, I will do everything I can to get Palin impeached and out of office in our state. People in the lower 48 just don't get it! Palin was nominated as V.P. because McCain did not look into this women's credentials but Alaskan's know she was only Riding High On The Wings of others hard work!

Susan   December 5th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Serious question.....for those of you suggesting perhaps Jindal, aren't his views more extreme than most? And, I believe that hell will truly freeze over before Silly Sarah is ever elected to any national office.......

apples and oranges   December 5th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

if the republicans can't find a better canidate than palin, they should just give up their party all together, it's plain they don't care what the majority of the voters want.

Al   December 5th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

The 43rd President is still in office and the 44th President doesn't even start his first term for another 6 weeks. Hey if these 2 want to run in 2012 go right ahead. I would be very happy to have Obama for a second term.

Oh Crap...   December 5th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Puhlleaase Republicans is this the best you can come up with.

I hope Gov. Palin runs for POTUS in 2012 so as to make it easier for PE Obama to win his second term. She is one of the best Secret Weapons I have ever seen the Democrats come up with.

Wonderful! I would enthusiastically support a ticket with either one of them, especially Palin. I would LOVE a ticket with both of them on it!

In the meantime......four years of mental/political hibernation for me until the Obama term is over. I hope for the best.....expect the worst.

No Hillary = No Obama   December 5th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Said it before, will say it again. Until the media – all of them – implement standards of conduct in print and word, with a no tolerance policy of sexist comments, no woman should even consider the VP or PRez position because she will be demonized just like Hillary Clinton and lose. I don't understand how we can have laws that prohibit sex discrimination in the work place, yet have these media conglomerates have a free-for-all with sexist, demeaning comments with impunity. Palin should forget about it.

Tom   December 5th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Way to go, GOP! Back to the future! Please, please pick one of these. It will be a walkover for President Obama, who will win regardless, but very easily over either one of these extreme rightwing nutballs.

Marcos Vargas   December 5th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

I would love to know which "poll" decided that those two deadbeats led the predicted GOP nominations for 2012??!! Has anyone heard of La. Governor Bobby Jindal? He is arguably the most intelligent politician in the country, as we speak. (Graduated from Brown University with Honors, attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and was accepted to Harvard Medical School and Yale Law School – only to turn down both to start his political career in Louisiana).

Instead, this "poll" chose a Religion major (and seminary dropout) -Huckabee; and Alaska's version of Katie Couric (also, a dropout of multiple junior colleges) as the early leaders to represent the Republican Party in the quest to be the next leader of the free WORLD!!?? Oh wait, Sarah Palin is a "soccer mom". She's qualified.

Huckabee-Colbert in 2012! Now that's a duo I'd cross party lines to vote for.

Palin though, she's like the Paris Hilton of the GOP. So dumb, so spiteful, such a trainwreck, but so painfully fun to watch stumble around.

One question. Who were the top two Democratic contenders for 2008 back in December 2004? Why I believe that would have been John Kerry and John Edwards. Palin will be a footnote in history...never President or VP.

Andrew   December 5th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

It'd be nice to see Jindal as President. He's like the Republicans' Obama, except with actual accomplishments....oops, is that racist?

Dee   December 5th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

It amazes me all of the hate on Sarah. She is a much better person than most, if not all, of the current Washington insiders. I guess our left loon leaning nation wants more corruption rather than to have some representation from someone who will represent the average citizen. I guess it is fear that she will rat on all of the cons in Washington.

JohnTTTr   December 5th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

I just can't stand her voice. Sarah reminds of a female boss I had. I felt miserable every day at work. She talked to everyone like she talked to her kids and her husband in her kitchen. She had an answer and an excuse for everything and nothing. She talked around and around very fluently about anything, defined everything her own way with absolute confidence and made extremely spontaneous decisions upon her PMS. She believed everyone loved her and looked up to her.

Jeff   December 5th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

So far it looks consistent. The two biggest clowns of the GOP ready to roll! Amazing. Does Huckabee need a wardrobe allowance too?!

If this is the absolute best the Republicans can muster up for 2012.... I have all the confidence in the world that the Democrats will hold on to the presidency office. Shame to be able to think like this when they havent even taken office yet.

hsmith   December 5th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Huckabee and Palin are both good candidates; however, Huckabee is a better speaker and can navigate the minefield of news reporters and inpromptu speaking opportunities. Huckabee was truly the Republican candidate for this year, but the establishment turned their back on him, and with his weak financial resources, he had little chance of winning. Perhaps, the east coast Republican establishment will wake up and realize that Wall Street can not win the presidency for the party.

sandee in Portland   December 5th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

@Lesle...I don't think Annie meant a person of faith shouldn't be able to run for office. I think she meant the person of faith running for office shouldn't try to make laws that require the general public to abide by the theories of their faith.....like most of the conservative right wing evangelicals want and that includes illiterate Palin.

Mike Mc   December 5th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Dave S.   December 5th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

What a (horrifying) concept!

Are there really THAT many ignorant people in this (great) country of ours? Say it ain't so! Or is God really hugging them THAT much closer, so close, that he is cutting off their oxygen supply?

I love "down-to-earth" people just as much as the next "Joe". Though, is an "outsider" who is so out of touch with the rest of the country (except those parts there are out there that are really great ones), and so unfamiliar with Washington, and is so (uncomfortably) inexperienced with foreign relations, REALLY an individual that this (great) country wants in, or anywhere near, the Whitehouse?

It has been my experience in life that when a bad decision is made, recognize it, admit it, apologize and then move on. Don't go into denial, forge full-speed ahead continuing to deceive, ignore facts and lack of knowledge of them. Respectably and responsibly do what is best. Spare those who already have been, and will be affected, further turmoil. "Bite the bullet", don't direct it into humble, innocent, helpless victims.

When hiding nasty peas in a small pile of delicious mashed potatoes, the peas conveniently disappear. The now, once attractive, pile of mashed potatoes becomes much larger, though it is obviously and abhorrently unattractive and tainted. What remains is a big mound of waste that only belongs in the garbage disposal. Continue this process over time, and in the end, a LOT of what was once good becomes mere garbage. Rotting and festering into toxic bacteria.

lynne   December 5th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Peter   December 5th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Neal in Pa   December 5th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Any ticket with Palin on it will definitely NOT get my vote!!!

Chuck   December 5th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Huckabee should've been on the ticket this time but people with influence wouldn't endorse him because they didn't think he could win. They're the reason we're in this situation. Huckabee could've won!

And, Palin? As a conservative Christian Republican I have to say "NO WAY!" She may have values similar to mine, but she can't say 'ing' to save her life, and trying to find her sentence structure is impossible.

Getting It Right   December 5th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Wow – they have some talent and they refuse to utilize it: Governor Crist and Governor Pawlenty are strong leaders, but the GOP keeps going for the shock – far right wing philosophy.

Tony   December 5th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Does anyone think this matters at all? 4 years from now is a lifetime in politics and the polls now mean absolutely nothing. How about we have our next President take the oath of office before we waste money and time on who the Republican nominee might be in 2011?? People are idiots.

Dace Tucson   December 5th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

I am so Mike Huckabee 2012.

I supported him in '08, but we'll have to wait a few years first.

Palin isn't bad, but not quite as good.

I wouldn't mind Newt Gingrich either, but Huckabee is best at this point.

Huckabee was the "ONLY" candidate between both sides I would not choke to death voting for. It is sickening to me when people claim they are quote "CHRISTIANS" and "GO TO CHURCH" yet they vote pro gay and pro abortion candidates. What they really mean is they say that they are but they vote with their wallets. Money will not get you to heaven. That is the reason I refuse to set foot in a church unless it is the church that Huckabee is a member of. I do not understand how we had supposed success with a former Ark. Governor so why not put another one in. In the words of a Green Day song welcome to "IDIOT AMERICA". I have nothing personal against OBAMA but he BETTER DELIVER all that he has promised because I am a firm believer of Personal Accountability. Something else that has been missing in America.

I don't think she is stupid she is a smart lady. i just can't believe how hateful the liberals are, i used to be a hard core liberal but i grew up and realize that liberalism means doing the wrong stuff. I am not a complete conservative but closer to it than a liberal. This country started to get screwed up when tha ACLU was started. This country was based on christianity and it is going to stay as a Christian country and if you don't like it get out we don't need you here. Huckabee can string a sentence together, so that is progress for the GOP. I have heard him speak, and even though I am a liberal Democrat, I can see why he appeals to many people. I still think Romney would do better. A Romney/Huckabee ticket would probably be a good ticket. Too bad that the GOP's best likely won't be good enough in 2012.

Sean Schubert   December 5th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

I live in AK and am truly ashamed of the current gubernatorial office holder, although she really hasn't been the Gov since McCain's announcement on 8/29. With that said, if everyone agrees to stop giving her a national stage, we will accept her back for the betterment of the rest of the nation. Hopefully, we can elect a competent and intelligent person in 2 years. Maybe Fran Ulmer will run again and then the rest of America can see that there are women of integrity in AK.

I rather like Huckabee, even though I tend to be one of those independents who usually-but not always-vote Democrat. But Palin? No way, no how. Personally, I'd like to see Bobby Jindal as the Republican standard bearer. He's almost as bright as Obama and definitely represents a fresh new direction for the GOP–away from the insulting,dumbed-down "Joe the Plumber" campaigns of the past. It would be an interesting match-up: one that would be good for the country: a real political discourse instead of the usual smears and divisive fear-mongering.

Obviously this site is meant for liberals only based on the opinions expressed. You all seem to be VERY afraid of Sarah Palin. Whenever the left spews the kind of hate unloaded on Sarah, it means their nervous. It is the ignorance of the left and non-thinking Democrats that got Obama elected (see howobamagotelected.com). He is more inexperienced than McCain, but Sarah Palin as well. He has questionable ties to extremists and the left acts like he is the messiah. He's not – he was bought and paid for by the extreme left and he will do as he is told by those heavy handed, strident individuals. I am at a loss to think why lefties think he is going to do so great. Lefites hate Bush beyond reason, but he did keep this nation safe which everyone should be thankful for but no one on the left has even one shred of decency to acknowledge. Believe me, your glee will not last. Obama is not the messiah. Oh, and Ms. Rotten – you are indeed that, but you also need a spelling lesson. I'd say we could start you off at the 4th grade level and see how you do.

To all who make these awful and embarrasing comments about the hard working Americans who run this great country you should be ashamed. I know that even though I am a big republican and McCain supporter i will support the next president in hope of a better and more prosperous country. This will not be done only by one party, but by all who wish to seek out better times for the United States of America. Further more we should respect the hard working Palin and Huckabee for their service to this country.

You may disagree with me but please think about what i said.\

Let Palin run. Shes a Democrats dream. They know there isn't enough dummies around to put her over the top. Go Caribou Barbie !!!

Jimmy Taylor   December 5th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

It's hilarious to see just how afraid of Palin the whiney Dems (alias the me me me party) are. CNN wouldn't be spending so much time and effort trying to tear her down if they didn't think she was extremely relevant.

I love it! Clearly the Republican base didn't understand the message from this election cycle that they have moved too far to the right. Now they're lining up behind the two most polarizing figures in their party. I hope they keep moving that direction because they won't win another national election if they do.

Judith wichhart   December 5th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

As a moderate liberal female I can hardly wait untill Palin goes back to the frozen tundra and we can forget about her. I really don't understand why she is still being talked about by the media. If you would ignore her she would go away because she has nothing to offer us. And I would hate to think you-all promoting her celebraty would actually make her a viable canidate for anything outside of Alaska

Mike   December 5th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Bobby Jindal – Huckabee would be better for a 2012 run.

ALASKA   December 5th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Most citizens of Alaska love her as the governor because in the grand scheme of things, she is doing a good job and she is doing things that Alaska would want. Talk all the crap you want...she's really not that bad. Just not right for president. The hope is she is re-elected as Governor.

midwest mom   December 5th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

A person of faith can be in office. A person of ANY faith can be in office. Seperation of church and state simply means that as an elected official...we don't want to hear you preach to us about your religion and we don't want you governing our families based on your religious teachings. Take your religion and keep it in your church, don't let it touch our politics in any way, shape or form!

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   December 5th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Pastor Huck won't get far when the media starts digging into his numerous ethics violations as governor or his pathetic whining as to why he pardoned a murder/rapist (who went out to rape and murder again) over the recommendations of the parole board ... and all the other dirt on this holier than thou preacher-politician. I personally don't like the idea that he named his first three dead pheasants after his rivals or that he recommends people who don't love the Confederate flag stick that flagpole where the sun don't shine ... really good Christian ethics there!

ALASKA   December 5th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

I live in Alaska...in Wasilla. I've known Sarah Palin all of my life. She is a dear family friend...that being said...if Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee are the best the Republican party is going to come up with, here's to a second term for the Democrats, possibly Barack Obama (depending on what he does with his first). Both are very religious and while I know for a fact Sarah does not necessarily try to push her religion on others, she is strong-willed and strong-minded and when she wants something done, she gets it done. Therefore, legislation with religious antics or undertones such as reversing Roe v. Wade, etc. will be decided religiously, because religion guides people's choices (when they believe in something). This is where the problem is: it's impossible to seperate church from state and it's wrong. Anyway...This is sad. The Republicans are screwed 2012.

DemFan   December 5th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Are you kidding me? Republicans must be smoking weed. Huckabee is intelligent, kind and informed, but too conservative to win the Presidency. Palin is stupid, mean and ignorant, AND too conservative to win the Presidency. With Huckabee there is a chance. With Palin, none. Go Palin!

MJB   December 5th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

You never get a second chance to make a first impression and Sarah Palin's first impression was so HORENDOUS she doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of ever being President of the United States. She may poll well with Neo-Conservatives but thank heaven they aren't a majority. There are still enough intelligent Americans to see that Palin never settles into the White House!!!!!!! She is SO unqualified, it baffles the mind that 46 million American voted for McCain/Palin!!!!

I love how people that believe in God could only be Republicans. The religous right wants a law that says that makes same sex marriage illegal. There is this little thing that called SEPEARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE! This means that you can't rule the population according to your religous beliefs. Marriage is a religous concept. We get a couple thumpers like Huckleberry and Falin in charge, we are going to have a constitutional tear up party. Are you ready for the Republican Inquisition?? [cue the dancers now] We are finally at the end of this 8 year nightmare, Bush is finally out, let's see how long we can go with out hearing the "word" nucular!! The good ole boy is headin home!

It just goes to show you the level of stupidity of some people. This woman has no right to be president. We need a leader and not a divider, We need someone with at least half a brain not someone that thinks Africa is a country. Am I worried? You betcha. When people honestly say she is ready to be president of the United States and they are of voting age you betcha it scares me. Maybe Obama will increase spending in our schools because stupidity reigns supreme in the Republican party.

It amazes me every day that people who were brought up in this country can so easily ignore that our government is based on the separation of church and state.

Why on earth would anyone want to vote someone into office based on their religous views? That is a private matter that should be shared only with one's family and friends.

Legislation and laws should NEVER be based on ANY religion's tenets.

I am a born-again Christian who voted for Barack Obama this time, and if the Republican party are stupid enough to "run" this racist hypocrite in 2012 they will deserve the "beating" that they will undoubtedly receive at their own expense, once again....she will only receive 30% of the "right" vote...will that be enough votes for her to beat Obama? I don't think so....

There is one thing common between run up to Iraq war in 2002 and the current media obsession about Gov.Palin. It is sensationalism stupid. For both of these events is is sad to note that media is greedy about money making. Nothing wrong with it, as long as objectivity is not lost at the expense of personal greed. If the media had acted responsibly in 2002, may be we would have avoided the Iraq war and its consequences. It is time for media to show they are Patriotic and let Palin take rest in Alaska for three years.

Just love the fact that GOP men prefer Palin over Huckabee. Don't you think it has to do with Sarah's legs (which also explains why GOP women don't like her as much)? Here's the problem for Palin – she is riding on the hot babe factor and as she ages over the next four years her hot factor is going to go down. Being a beauty queen only gets you so far in life before middle age takes it toll. Another observation – if Hillary had Sarah's looks – we'd be "lookin" at a different President elect. And Bill would be stayin home more.

Luke   December 5th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

What a useless article. First, Palin won't win. Huckabee seems to be a sensible man, but his policies are not going to win him any favor in the next couple years. Finally, Obama isn't even in office yet, don't fill the news with this rubbish!

Matt, Minneapolis, MN   December 5th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

2 things CNN.

First it's not even 2009 yet, give us 2 years or so without presidential campaign questions before starting these polls.

Second you're pulling so many names into the mix who weren't even mentioned and aren't as well known. There are several other governors, Pawlenty and Barber, Purdue. I mean really did you think that some governors who are recognized as little right now outside of their state as Clinton was, might stand a chance?

Why don't we quit talking about the 2012 election and focus on the politcal state of 2008-2009?

KJL   December 5th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Good thing the next election isn't until 2012. That should give Palin enough time to read a newspaper and find out who the prime minister of Canada is. Oh, and maybe she should check out the status of "the country of Africa."

Helen   December 5th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

My My My....perhaps the religious nut that Palin used to get the demons ouy will put a spell on the rest of the United States and make them vote for her.
She supports the Independence of A laska from the US, and has the IQ of a dry piece of toast. It makes me wonder how she got elected? What were the voters of A laska thinking? Or I guess they weren't. Is there anyone there that will run against her in politics in the Never Never Land?
It is frightening to think that those in power actually believe in an invisible man in the sky watching over them. And these people have their finger on the button.
Palin is merely a small small footnote in the political scheme of things, would Bobby Jindal really sit back and let this happen to his party? I don't think so. Would Mitt Rommney sit back and take a back seat to Sexy Sarah?
She should be home planning her pregnant daughter's wedding with the redneck, and also getting sex education for the other daughter before she to is knocked up.

Sam, Lincoln,NE   December 5th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

The Republicans can't seem to decide what sort of party they want to be and to whom they want to cater. They claim to be the party that promotes fiscal conservatism, a less intrusive government, and adherence to the Constitution but the current figurehead of that party appears to have thumbed his nose at all three of those principles in an atttempt to curry favor with evangelicals. The so-called big tent has no room for you unless you're a religious extremist bent on pushing social conservatism on a populace that cleary does not want it.

If the Republicans believe that Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee represent their party's best hopes in 2012 then it appears that they haven't yet figured out that evangelicals represent only a very small minority of Americans and that pandering to their extreme views will only alienate mainstream Republicans and moderates. The Democrats learned a thing or two about tilting to the left in years past and now the Republicans will have to learn the same painful lesson about tilting to the extreme right.

Excited!   December 5th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

My sense is America, for a variety of reasons, works best with two viable parties. However, if the GOP has any chance of being a viably competing party, they CANNOT have Sarah Palin involved....
The Economist in a recent article pointed out that she is simply not bright enough to be involved in politics on the national level.
No individual can make a cogent arguement that Sarah Palin has the political acumen. It is so unfortunate that your poll numbers show that Republican voters even give her any attention.

The Democrat have to giggling....

Mark my words...Palin is history...she simply doesn't have what it takes to lead the party or the Country for that matter, it has nothing to do with knowing all the right info, it's an issue of personality, character, and talent and she doesn't have it.

A couple of things: FIrst, can we stop talking about Palin. GIving this level of press coverage to the Alaska Governor who can't put a coherent sentence together and who doesn't have a clear policy or direction for Alaska, much less the country, is absolutely absurd. Second, can we enjoy the next eight years of our fabulous new President-Elect who is already moving the machine forward with intelligence, clarity and grace? 2012? Seriously? WIth our mammoth problems mounting by the hour, we need to stay focused on the here and now. Anyway, no one stands a chance against Obama in 2012. We want him the full eight years; the second term will be when we hit maximum stride.

adampeart   December 5th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

If Republicans keep along this "white-evangelical" neo-conservatism baloney they may as well fold now. It's time for those at the RNC to wake up and realize that their formula- which would most certainly be perpetuated by the likes of Palin and Huckabee- of empire expansion and theft of constitutional liberties by use of fear tactics on the American people, is played out and no one wants to hear it anymore (except for those that give money to the likes of Benny Hinn.) Republicans need to:
A: Stand up for constitutional law
B: Promote and restore individual rights
C: Rid itself of "morality" platform positions
D: Rescind the size and scope of federal government and institutions
E: Restore states' rights
F: Reject their current "pre-emptive" foreign policy
G: Focus on abolishing unconstitutional institutions like the Federal Reserve
H: Create of Sound monetary system
I: Protect American sovereignty

Somehow I don't see this happening. After a year I think the buzz on these two will fade into oblivion, and as a Republican myself, it is my hope that four years down the line we will have TRUE STATESMEN to choose from, that understand that the only thing that is popular which they can promote in their campaign is FREEDOM.

Sue Little   December 5th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Enough!

Renee   December 5th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

really, I second the question...what intelligent American would vote for Sarah Palin? I bet that percentage rate is from unintelligent, "back woods" red necks that really think Obama is not a U.S. Citizen and that he's a "terrorist."

MB   December 5th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

What was the definition of insanity again?

Pam   December 5th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

We should just buy the republicans a shovel so they can keep digging themselves in a hole! Perfect...it's about time us Dems got good news after 8 years of stupid republican blundering.

60 year old white female and proud supporter of PE Obama   December 5th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

No wonder there is no bipartisan support in Congress as Americans lurch from one election to another with few politicians have the background to do what is right...just what is politically expedient...and, unlike other democratic countries where all of their parliament are voted on at the same time, gridlock continues.

And the press keeps pushing it to fill up air space.

gp   December 5th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

This is truly the most rediculous thing I ever heard. These nuts rather put this country in the hands of dimwit. Unbelivable!!

Missy   December 5th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

I can't believe anyone in his or her right mind would consider Palin for ANYTHING having to do with leading our government. Are these people nuts? It's not only that she knows nothing (I suppose she could try to learn... or memorize), it's her frightening positions and views as well. SPARE US PALIN IN 2012 PLEASE!!!!

FAYE, NV   December 5th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

We Dems welcome Sara to run. ROFLMAO FUNNY!!!

Olaf   December 5th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Huckabee? The GOP continues on the bible-thumping, "We demand a Christian State!" path to self-destruction. Palin? Well, she's no Huckabee, and that's a good thing.

Before you blow off Jesse Ventura for being so unconventional, consider he that took on both the far left and the far right and turned this nanny state around, putting at least a temporary stop to the meaningless partisan bickering and getting important things done that neither major party could in 50 years. Minnesota citizens should still be grateful.

As for Al Franken, a bitter and vicious pretend comedian in the U.S. Senate wouldn't be so unusual, would it?

Frieda, PA   December 5th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Dead in the water. These two couldn't lead us out of a tunnel, much less two wars. There's a reason PA went for Barack, we're suffering and we need help from someone other than right wingnuts.

GREAT!!!! The PERFECT team to run for President/Vice-President in 2012. I hope and pray it happens! That way Obama will be set for another 4 years.

libssuck1   December 5th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

We really care who is running for office in 2012 when we still haven't had Obuma in office yet and Bush still has 6 more weeks left in office. What is wrong with this picture? Is the media so stupid that they want to continie with garbage like this when it has been shoved down this nations throat for over 2 years now, the media can take their points in polls and shove where the sun don't shine. Good heavens, what a bunch of idiots!

Tammy   December 5th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Not once have I heard this woman try to push her Christianity off on other people but I have had to listen to gays and atheist's whine. What is happenning to this country I ask? It seems that since Obama has been elected all the nuts are coming out of the woodwork. Why is that?

Let them keep busy doing that while the Obama Administration and intelligent Americans at large get busy with the business of improving their lives and the country at large. Intelligence, pragmatism and common sense won this time. Thank goodness.

jeez!!

Jack   December 5th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Silly Sarah Palin and the Huckster wow, what a combination of stupidity. Well, one industry that will love that combination is the christian bookstores that can sell text books that "educate" our children that the world is only 6000 years old!

If you like religious rulers in Saudi Arabia then, you'll love the leadership of Palin/Huckabee.

Carlos   December 5th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

This is ridiculous. They are wasting taxpayer money doing this right now. Isn't she supposed to be in Alaska running things? She isn't going to do anything superb or even mediocre in the next eight years that will make her remotely qualified for the Presidency. She barely has political experience.

People say the good thing about her is that she is like "the people". And that we don't want a "politician" anymore...we want a "regular person". I DON'T! The American public barely knows in's and out's of politics. I want someone smarter than me. Someone who knows politics because it's not a guessing game and should not be played around with. Leave it to the professionals.

Palin has NO chance if Hillary runs in 2016. Obama is in it for TWO TERMS!

Chris W   December 5th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

NoVA Yankee   December 5th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Ron, St. Johns, AZ   December 5th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

After his pathetic treatment at the hands of the media and the religious right, I will be plesantly surprised if Mitt Romney makes another run at the White House in 2012. But that would be the very best thing for the GOP and ultimately, the country. Romney has the leadership and economic credentials in spades that will be sorely needed after four years of Obamanomics.

But if all the GOP can field in 2012 is either Sarah "clueless incarnate" Palin or Mike upcHuckabee, then I truely fear for our republic.

Go Mitt!!!

Robert Crowley   December 5th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Ok, we are just getting rid of a President who stated he gets direction almost daily/personally from Jesus. Now we want to elect Huckabee who wants to make the US into theoraracy and use the Bible to make daily desicions for the Country. Talk about Muslim nuts.

Palin would down right be dangerous for the Country. What the heck are these far right wing Republicans thinking. Do they want to loose even bigger than they did this past November.

MrReality   December 5th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Seriously, Mr. Steinhauser - put down the crack pipe and report some actual news instead of trying to invent some. 34% of likely Republican voters will support Huckabee and 32% will support Palin and 28% will support Romney and 27% will support Gingrich and 23% will support Rudy Guiliani and 19% will support Bobby Jindal and 7% will support Charlie Crist. Gosh, by my calculations, that means that 170% of 460 Republican-leaning voters will support one of those candidates in 2012!

W. is president now. Obama won't be the next president until January 2009. Please get back to us in 2011 or so when there is more of a tepid interest in the next presidential race and at that time write your story a little more coherently.

Mr. or Ms. CNN Political Director? Please control your monkey.

Sean   December 5th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

It's interesting to see that no one has considered Governor Mitch Daniels for 2012. He was named governor of the year, never ran a negative ad campaign in his life, and he brought Indiana out of a $400 million deficit to a $400 million surplus in four years.

Dave   December 5th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

I was so pleased and Inspired by Americans choosing Mr. Obama, it was obvious from the start you had a man of substance and Intelligence and great Character.

The difference between him and the DIm wit on his way out is extraordinary, I watched the debates with Bush from the begining and it was just incredible that such a simple minded man could get the most powerful position in the world..It was a sad day for the planet !!

Now with talks of Palin being the hope for the Republican party, Oh My God, lol...if thats the best they can do once again? wow! Democrats welcome to a multi-term Presidency and more..She cannot live down the lack of knowledge of her own Country and its systems of Government and ordinary communication skills, not good enough for the importance of the most powerful position in the world, not even close!!

We have a couple of clowns trying to take power in Canada, but they were denied for now, and I would rather they with the seperatist in Canada, run things than be a close to a Palin run U.S.A. !! I love your country, always have, had to take a step back while that simpleton was the President, but now, you have made such a great choice..Way to go USA, the best hope for freedom and civilization on the planet!!

Best Regards

Dave Stewart

Trevor H.   December 5th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

I'm sorry, but Palin and Huckabee? You have GOT to be kidding me! If we are going to win this thing, we need somebody who can LEAD the GOP, not destroy it. I would definitely not vote for either of this candidates if they were nominated. Huckabee and Palin are both, in my opinion, not at all the best choice for the party.

If anything, Mitt Romney is the way to go...

WakeUpPeople   December 5th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

i am so sick of her! How can sensible Americans even think about voting for her!!! I just don't get it. Do we not want smart intelligent people in the whitehouse?! Didn't we have enough of Bush why do we need a Bush duplicate such as Palin. Wake up Republicans!!!

Obama63   December 5th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

So American GOP man prefer Palin (possibly with a beer can in one hand and a gun in the other or maybe librarian style!)
THAT GIVES US A PERFECT IDEA OF THEIR STANDARDS WHEN THEY VOTE!!!. They should get a grip! I cannot believe people let them decide the leadership of this country before!
Suggestion for the GOP man electors for 2012? What about some Miss Redneck contestant (non necessarly the winner,- just to meet your standars better) with a middle school degree and nice looking in a bikini?

Wayne from Fullerton, CA   December 5th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Palin is a prime example of the five stages of death.
(In this case the death of the Republican party)

1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance

Problem is..., Republicans refuse to progress past stage one.

Annie   December 5th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

While this is quite early, please, GOP. Please do not continue to alienate conservatives who are conservatives for political reasons, not religious reasons, any further. What's that about separation of church and state?

ALD   December 5th, 2008 5:21 pm ET

I would take Mike Huckabee over Sarah Palin anyday. She is way out of touch.

tsj   December 5th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Are you conservatives kidding me? If anyone in this country believes that Sarah Palin will be ready to become President, you seriously need to have you head examined!

I am still scratching my head as to how could she be a governor and you are thinking she can become commander in chief!

Honker Bob   December 5th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Is this the best the Republican party can offer? My God, what a joke! They are writing their own obituary if they nominate her and continue to align themselves with the lunatic religious right. The Republican party of small government, lower taxes, not meddling in our lives, etc. doesn't exist anymore!

pjchild   December 5th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Dream on John-boy. What you are hearing is incredulity that anyone can be stupid enough to think this woman has the intelligence to run this country.

John   December 5th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

We're finally getting rid of one bone-headed president who shredded the constitution. Now, people are talking about Huckbee for president? The man wants to ammend the constitution to make the US a Christian nation under God ... his God, that is. Let cooler heads prevail!

Jon, Palo Alto, CA   December 5th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

It's inspiring to see just where the GOP is going. Lemmings off a cliff.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   December 5th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Please GOP, place these two people high on your list. It doesn't matter – Bush has guaranteed the WH for the Dems for a long time, because everybody can now see what happens when you put a pure neophyte and buffoon at the controls with a Cabal surrounding him!!!

So, do please nominate Palin and Huckabee!!! Start today, why wait?! Huckabee had Chuck Norris in his corner, who will Palin have – Sgt. Preston of the Yukon?!

Libertarian in AK   December 5th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

Palin is the most pragmatic and effective Governor I have seen in my 34 years in Alaska. The only social legislation on her watch was same sex benefits, which she signed. Like Regan, in actuality social conservatives will get nothing.

Obama has the same Bailout/deficit spending solutions Bush has. Obama is beginning to sound like Bush when it comes to Iran, Pakistan etc. Contrary to 'landslide' talk, the Rs only had to flip 4 of 100 votes to win. I hope Obama works out OK but I don't see it...

I admit her extemporaneous speaking is flawed, so was Eisenhower's.

John from Boston   December 5th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

As a Democrat who feels as if he is coming in from the wilderness after 8 years of one of the more abysmal administrations in American history, I cannot tell you how it warms my heart to see that the top three prospective candidates for the GOP nomination in 2112 are (1) Mike Huckabee, (2) Sarah Palin, and (3) Newt Gingrich. No. (1) is a religionist. No. (2) is a national punch line and an ignorant, gold-plated phony. And no. (3) is perhaps the single most annoying, polarizing figure in American politics.

Rick - Missouri   December 5th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

Huckabee could out debate Palin in his sleep. She obviously can NOT speak beyond well scripted sound bytes, even in a debate (where she often refused to answer direct questions, yet insisted on speaking "directly to the American people". PLEASE! That was only because she did not have an answer to the question, and her tactic was a clear dodge to get in a practiced sound byte). Huckabee is truly brilliant, and very smooth. He could debate nearly any topic, on the spur of the moment, and outdo even the most rehearsed and polished politician (including Barack Obama or John McCain). I hope Huckabee runs again in 2012, and that Palin stays home (where she belongs). I don't know how any logical person could watch/listen to her unscripted interviews, and walk away with any impression, other than that the woman is a simpleton. NOTE: I reluctantly supported Palin when McCain picked her, and after she gave interviews, figured out what a horrendous mistake McCain had made. I'm 100% sure Palin cost McCain LOTS of votes, as the prospect of Palin becoming President was truly frightening.

Jeanne Bean   December 5th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

Obama would be very hard to beat in 2012–he's already on a roll. So I'm not sure it matters who the Republicans pick.

In 2016, if Sarah Palin is still around and seeming to think that God is opening a door for her to the presidency (cough, gag, spit!), then I hope Caroline Kennedy takes her on.

Barbara   December 5th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Good Grief, who are the people being polled?

Gary   December 5th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

I still see that CNN is it's usual "accurate" self! (sarcasm off)

Can't wait for 2012 so we can get a leader in the White House for a change!

Sarah is the one WE have been waiting for!

Paul   December 5th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

what makes people think she could beat Obama in 2012, when she couldn't even do it in 2008?

Terri in IL   December 5th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

HELLO!! Is there any one home at the RNC? Are they all sitting on their brains? Maybe, just maybe they just want to scare us, maybe they are kidding, right? After the kick in the butt McCain got due to his selecting Palin, even from his own party, they would still consider a brainless tart like Palin. I guess we will have Obama for the next eight years-thanks to the empty heads ruling the RNC. Teach her to talk first, the poor idiot can't even think in a full sentence–forget a paragraph.

Brian   December 5th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

I don't know what we are thinking. The Republican party got blown out this past election, and our response is to nominate a couple of Bible-thumping neo-cons with no economic plans. Really? If the GOP nominates one of these two, then we deserve the pounding we will inevitably receive in 2012.

GuyInVA   December 5th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

j thinks that Gov. Palin's popularity is indication of how "whack" the center of the party is. My favorite thing about both parties is their blatant hypocrisy. It is the party that so despises Gov. Palin that currently boasts a Klansman as its senior Senator. Not to mention how close we are to Senator Franken (a fine sequel to Governor Ventura, Minnesota).

David   December 5th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

President Sarah Palin and Vice President Mike Huckabee in 2012! Thats the best news for Democrats ever! Sarah Palin is the new hope for the GOP. Governor Palin is the best candidate the GOP can nominate in 2012. She has made the GOP a laughing stock!

Bob, North Carolina   December 5th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Must be a slow news day. There has to be something more important than a survey of Republican voters on a 2012 ticket. Come on CNN we just had two years of media frenzy over the 2008 election and now you want four years for the next one.

The worst thing that has happened to this country and the world is 24 hour news.

Ed   December 5th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

the good news for the Democrats just keeps coming !!!

Patski   December 5th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Palin..........Believe me, this woman could not run a two car funeral let alone the United States.

Ryan Kelly--Oswego,NY   December 5th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Do you guys think Bobby Jindal or Charlie Crist have a chance?

Kennydupree   December 5th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Wow, Palin and Huckabee, huh. Looks like Obama's got this thing locked for the full 8.
I used to be a republican but now consider myself a moderate democrat. I won't even think about voting republican until the GOP has seriously regrouped and new leaders in the party come to the forefront.

Ken   December 5th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

I thought the [R] party was supposed to learn a lesson from the 2008 election, and reform itself. Palin and Huckabee just represent more of the same-old narrow rightwing outlook that put the country in the mess that its in now. Good grief, the remnant of the [R] party is truly pathetic! That party is in serious trouble....

john nolastname   December 5th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

We need President Palin like a fish needs a bicycle.

Doctor E   December 5th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

So the religious nutjobs still run the Republican party. As long as that's the case, they'll have to live in the margins.

Big D   December 5th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Dear Media – Please, please, please – stop talking about the 2012 elections. I don't even want to hear about 2010 yet. Please give us a break. The very day after the 2006 elections, we started hearing about 2008. Two full years was waaayyyy tooooo loooonnnggg. I cannot bear the thought of 4 years of nattering speculation about another election cycle. So please give us a break and knock it off already. Thanks!

ken los angeles   December 5th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

To think that we could have had a Palin Huckabee ticket this year in the White House. It's crying shame. Then we could have Joe the Plumber for Secretary of State. Go GOP!!!!

Even if Palin/Huckabee/Joe the Plumber are not able to run the country, they would generate more great material for Saturday Night Live, which obviously takes precedence over the economy, wars, global warming, blah blah blah.

Huckabee is only in it for Christians. I understand this country was founded on Judeochristian principles, but Huckabee is too extreme.

Hey "YUK"...there's a difference between a slip of the tongue and purposefully saying stupid things you actually believe. Shall we list Palin's honestly held and stated beliefs?

Thanks but no thanks? See it from my house? Putin reers his head? I read all of them? Bush Doctrine? Socialism? Joe-the-Plumber? WHAT EXACTLY DOES THE VICE PRESIDENT DO?

twoboys   December 5th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

2012 really? Let's see if we survive 2010 before we decide.

Will we still be allowed to vote in 2012?

Jerry   December 5th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

nowhere Washington.

Bob   December 5th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Anything would be better then Obama. Can't wait for Obama to get impeached.

Jeff C   December 5th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Three things:

1) Why are we running a poll about this before Obama is even inaugurated?

2) Why are all the liberals who watch CNN already complaining about this?

3) A lot can happen in 4 years. Obama could be outstanding. Or Obama could be a total bust. Sarah Palin could become a US Senator. Mike Huckabee could become the next Bill O'Reilly! Get over your biases that are based solely on political preference and pay attention to reality for a change.

Jim   December 5th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Who did your poll? Maybe Joe the Plumber? When you add up all the percentages you get way over 100%. Duh!!

JFK   December 5th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

If thats the best the GOP can come up with, please go back to the drawing board. America does not need any more backwards conservative zeolots running our country.

Pathetic. 2 loosers who are throw backs to the dark ages...Yeah that 'll work for 'em you betcha!

Huck....I'd say he would have been fine around...oh...1300 ad.
No capacity for critical modern thought. Just what the jihad boys want.
You betcha!

the GOP will have to find it's way into modernity as it's major base will be leving the Social Security Rolls for the cemetary.

CNN get off it Palin's 25 min. died 2 months ago. Slow news day?

Erick in Alabama for Obama   December 5th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

this is a joke! my man Obama is sure to serve 8 years! Give him a chance folks, and let him get sworn in 1st! He is not picking a lot of new people but with the mess we're in we need people with knowledge and experience that helped our nation in the best times.

Palin?? Get real! Has she finally decided to run her state again? I heard Alaskans were wonderingi whose in charge.
Obama 2012!

Zaphod2000   December 5th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Okay, I have just about had it with this bimbo and the news coverage of her.
Does anyone know or can start an online petition TO STOP THE MADNESS AND THE STORIES ABOUT THIS WOMAN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
We had enough of her for nine weeks but the media won't let her go like most of us want to do.
Please, if anyone out there could do it please start the petition. Maybe then the media will realize that we don't care a rat's behind about her.

Arnold of Woodland Hills   December 5th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

This is good news for Democrats. As long as Palin stays as the fronrunner for Republican ticket come 2012 election, Democrats have nothing to worry about. Palin is a disaster always waiting to happen for the Republicans. If this is the best job the republicans can offer in 2012 then Obama will have an easy campaign to stay as our president. Keep Palin on top of the podium. It's a lot easier for the Democrats. A woman who says that part of her foreign policies is seeing Russia from her backyard and doesn't know if Africa is a continent or not. Is this the best the Republicans can offer? Don't htey have anymore intellectuals around in their party. COM'ON!

kevin   December 5th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Palin...."you were a joke when you were picked.....you were a joke in the campaign....& you will continue being a joke." Do us all a favor and stay in Alaska and watch the sunset on Russia because you can see it from you backyard!

We're going to have to start a new party. Huckabee? Are you freaking kidding me? We're up against a party who thinks we can reason with an enemy which has been fighting the same war for 13 centuries and we're going to throw Palin and Huck at them? Thankfully the party will eventually take what we give them, which is going to be Eric Cantor, Romney and Jindal.

How depressing.

More ridiculous anti-Huckabee media bias. The headline puts Palin first even though she was second in the poll. They include a picture of Palin but not Huckabee. Clearly they want Palin to be the face of the conservative movement because they know she is a loser.

Jon, Louisiana   December 5th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Bobby Jindal only talks issues and has ideas, statistics and formulas to get things done. He's not your regular politician. I attended a town hall meeting of his this past week. After he brought the crowd up to date on the Nat'l, State and local front, he stood on the podium and greeted everyone in the room one on one to hear their issues. Most politicians work the crowd shaking hands with only the Big Shots. Personally I don't want him to run for President til he terms out here. He's a smart cookie and all business. He's doing a great job here, find somebody else.

Gordon NJ   December 5th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

With votes mentioned here adding up to 168% something is rotten in statistics-land. The people who determined these results need to explain how the votes were counted, since it's clear some must have voted for more than one candidate. And her I thought Republicans only had problems with science.

Dave in Boston   December 5th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

They're so out of touch that they don't even realize how out of touch they are. Yeah, GOP...keep pushing the pendulum to the right. shelley   December 5th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

A two year presidential campaign was much too long. Let's not turn this one into a four year campaign. Conducting a poll for 2012 now is just one more example of the media trying to create news rather than cover the news. No one knows what conditions w/ill be like in 2012, how well Barack Obama will acquit himself as president, and what Palin, Hukabee or anyone else will do in the next few years.

Rachel   December 5th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

I'd hope between now and 2012 the Republicans would take a good look at why they lost and foget Palin. She and Huckabee haven't quit campaigning . What world do they live in. 2012 will be Obama again.
The Republicans had better do something different than shove the stale candidates at us again. Palin made such a spectable of herself I cannot see for the life of me why we have to keep hearing about her.
I guess by then however, she'll need a new set of glad rags and no doubt talk them into that again. There is no cure for stupid.

Scott NYC Independent   December 5th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Considering that at best the republican base is 1/4 of the countries registered voters this is not a concern. No President can win without the support of some democrats and mostly all independents. Neither of these two can get that vote. Just as with the primaries and the general election its Obama's to win or lose.

TexasAnnie *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*   December 5th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Boy, that's a pretty sad future for the Republican party if these two are the best they can do.

I guess if the Republicans want to turn their party over to the ultra-right, then that's their choice. But they might want to take some polls first and see just what percent of people who say they are Republicans are willing to support such a far ultra-right agenda.

Maybe the Republicans need to split into TWO parties– Republicans and Fanatics.

JM   December 5th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

That's GREAT! The Republican party of the white, the rich, the aged and the extremely far right have learned nothing by the Democratic party thrashing that they have received during the past two national elections. They should continue to nominate the most radical far-right conservative candidates that have them served them so well, and they will continue to lose. Evidently the RNC has not learned anything.

Phil Smith   December 5th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Two of the most ridiculous people representing the radical right. I love this kind of comedy.

But if Republicans want to matter int he future, they need to reinvent themselves as a socially liberal, fiscally conservative party appropriate for the 21st century rather than the previous incarnation that was more appropriate for the Dark Ages. Then, the Palins and Huckabees of the world can blather on from the stupid right wing benches, balking at the stupid left wing tree huggers on the left wing.

Indeed, that might make for a good television show.

Ron   December 5th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

You've got to be kidding. She should go back to Alaska and keep her mouth shut.

joeb   December 5th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Jill   December 5th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Palin may be a talented flute player, but that's about it. Huckabee – nice enough guy, but people want more visible leadership. Ideology aside, while he may be capable of it, he does not exude that feeling.

Monica Malin   December 5th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Steve, NY   December 5th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Those two have the lowest rating amongst independents. As long as Obama doesn't screw up royaly, the GOP will not see a viable candidate till 2016. Also, congressional Democrats still have some hope. As long as they do not screw up, there is still the 2010 election where they can still pick up a filibuster proof majority. Remember, those who were elected in 2004 will be held accountable for the economic crises they helped steer us into.

Alex   December 5th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Glad to see the GOP is entrenching themselves in the myth that they need to become more overtly right-wing to win the presidency.

Poe the Jlumber   December 5th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Palin and Huckabee are exactly what's wrong with the GOP today.

Ron Paul is exactly the direction where the GOP should be headed.

Noodles   December 5th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Wouldn't the GOP be better off nominating people who have real experience as seasoned executives. Mitt Romney may be a Mormon, which is a little out of the mainstream, but there is little argument he knows how to build and run a business. Bobby Jindal may be young, but all reports out of Louisiana are that he is well respected across party lines. Obama appealled to independents. Jindal and Romney have that capacity to appeal to independents. I don't think Palin or Huckabee have that same capacity.

Doug in New Mexico   December 5th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Rich   December 5th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

sarah palin scares me and she should never run for president ever.

Kat   December 5th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Oh man, that's rich. The GOP have clearly learned nothing from this last election: pandering to the Christian right only alienates people who aren't evangelical or born-again. If they want to win in 2012 they should start looking at someone with intellectual capability and actual credentials, not someone who can wave the bible around and look good in a pantsuit.

Otherwise 2012 will be an easy re-election for Obama!

Richard - Atlanta   December 5th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

You'd think the Republicans would have learned that you can't win with a fringe candidate who represents extremist views. Palin is an extremist & she was one of the reasons why McCain lost.

Regardless of how she tries to "reinvent" herself, she will never convince SANE Americans that she is anything but a narrow-minded, uneducated, unqualified, religious right fanatic.

Consider some of the traditional RED states where McCain barely won. He won Georgia (a very conservative state) by only 200,000 votes ... if that isn't a sign that the GOP needs to move to the center I don't know what is.

petena   December 5th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Sue   December 5th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

John, are you serious? You sound like a petulant child. Have you really convinced yourself that the majority of Americans fear Palin? That is such a second-grade argument device, it's pathetic. What I fear is that there are people like you who fail to see how woefully inadequate she is as a public figure. I can't figure out if it's willfull obstinateness, failure to admit that your ideology is flawed, or plain stupidity. Either way, keep on supportin' Palin, you betcha!!!! I will even re-register as a Republican so I can support her in the primaries. Don't be such a sore loser. Enjoy the new civilized world! We prefer not to shoot wolves from helicopters here.

These polls are done by and responded to by people who apparently have nothing better to do to amuse themselves. Don't forget that just two years ago, and for the last four years, Giuliani was the front runner–and where is he now? And don't forget, also, that in a few months things will be so vastly different than they are now that polls like this will be irrelevant. Also, don't forget that a complex society requires competent, trained people to deal with its problems–you don't hire a plumber to do brain surgery, nor some smooth talking con to manage your transportation logistics, or some believer in a flat earth to develop your missile guidance systems.

Nick   December 5th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

As a Democrat I pray to God that Palin is on top of the ticket next time. She would be the easiest possible candidate for Obama to beat. I doubt he'll have a problem getting re-elected regardless but if Palin wins the GOP nomination we may as well just skip the election and spend all the campaign donations on paying down our deficit.

LMJ   December 5th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

As an Arkansan, I promise you, you don't want Mike Huckabee as your local dog catcher, let alone President of the U. S.

judy   December 5th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

NO INTELLIGENT VOTER COULD POSSIBLY SEE SARA PALIN AS A REAL CHOICE. i'LL BET IF THE NEWS MEDIA STOPPED TALKING ABOUT HER, SHE WOULD QUICKLY BE FORGOTTEN . DO WE REALLY WANT ANOTHER MINUTE OF THE LAST EIGHT YEARS? OR WORSE??

ED FL   December 5th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

That shoud go in the alaska and north and the arkansa and south. We would have a red neck dream team. OOPS we just got rid of a red neck administration. I can see them both in overalls, at least they can get clothed in walmart instead of Nieman Marcus.Might have trouble getting that re head in a straw hat.

AdamW   December 5th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Ok. Maybe I am missing something but the economy is in the toilet and people are getting paid to conduct these idiotic polls?

2012?

Really?

How about focusing on NOW????

The whole GOP landscape can change in four years. Why even bother?

Alex   December 5th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

As a Republican, if Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin are the best team the Republicans can come up with in 2012 or ever, then I'll do like I did this time, vote either Independent or Freedom. I do not believe religion should be dictated from the White House. It is for every man and woman to chose for themselves. We've already seen the self acclaimed "religious" group rule from the White House and look at the unbelievable mess we now find ourselves in as a nation.

Nathan,   December 5th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Palin and Huckabee. The GOP is a joke. The base of that party is clueless. Although I'm a Democrat I know there are better people in the GOP than those two. Oh I forgot, these are going to make sure gays don't marry.

Diane   December 5th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I can't even believe how stupid the republicans are who seem to love Palin. She's a clone of Bush: simple thinking processes and shallow understanding of the issues. Absolutely over her head and doesn't even understand that she's over her head. That got us where we are now, why do they want to go do it all again?

wilder   December 5th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

This is merely further proof that the corrupt and incompetent Republican Party is now officially plummeting toward EXTINCTION. And...America STANDS UP and CHEERS!

John   December 5th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

There they go again bringing Church into government, they are fools. They push too many conservatives away by stealing our civil rights. Face it us or them.

Millie Bea   December 5th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

The Republicans have 4 years to get their act together. They are not going to win a presidential election with Sarah Palin. Huckabee would have to start campaigning now and do it in a way that erases his failure to impress this last time. There are good, serious politicians in the Republican Party- They need to find their Obama.

Khai   December 5th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

This is hilarious. Those two chuckleheads to lead the party down another DEFEAT! Two losers representing their terrible party.

ckehne   December 5th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Such a shame. If this is all the Republicans can offer in 2012, what a mess our country would be in then. Bush has put us all in dept, and you want more?

KJL   December 5th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

there are 57 states in the US.

I AM OBAMA AND I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE.

ENOUGH ALREADY   December 5th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

The pollsters need to take a holiday..we don't need them right now. The viable candidates for the Republican ticket are doing their work behind the scenes now and these two jokers that lead the polls will be afterthoughts in 2012 (see Clinton, Hillary and Guiliani, Rudolph).

Navy Vet   December 5th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Why doesn't the Republican Party step in and say something? Could it be that the party thinks Palin could possibly win the nomination for POTUS? She can't even string two sentences together without going off in forty different directions and then she makes statements that do not tie in with her original thought. Its mind boggling.
Please, CNN, lets talk about subjects with substance and intellect. Palin does not fit in either catergory.

New England Yankee   December 5th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Be afraid....be very afraid.

How much more ridiculous can the republicans be? If they want to have a prayer, no pun intended, in 2012, they must distance themselves from this fool. Turn her into an Ice Road Trucker.

G   December 5th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Ron Paul 2012!!!

Fabian Blache, Baton Rouge, LA   December 5th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

AKDC,

Please advise..."talented" in what respect? I am always intrigued by the folks that ambiguously state that Sarah Palin is so "talented."

Please...enlighten us all with a reply.

Paul D   December 5th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

This is just ridiculous.
The 44th president hasn't even spent his first day in office yet and CNN's discussing Palin in 2012?? Isn't there much more important things to cover? Step it up CNN or you will become a tabloid news source along with Faux News.

chat box   December 5th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Sarah Palin has sound record as Governor. I trust her and her exective experience. She is the REAL CHANGE for Washington.

JB   December 5th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

There's not enough on the far right to elect either one of these losers. They'll play well to their base, but will lose moderates and independents and they certainly can't count on cross-over votes from liberals. They're way too far to the right to appeal to the middle.

Palin isn't suited to run a state, much less a country. She's more weather girl than president.

Larry   December 5th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

CNN,I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time to post anything here,if I write anything that isn't full of hate and demeaning to the Republican politicians and the party ,the moderator here at CNN won't post it.And if I write anything that doesn't say that Obama is not the best thing that's ever happened,the moderator won't post it.Is this blog just for the far left,or is it just the people that CNN has moderating???

JLH   December 5th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

We're afraid you are so dumb as to let her near the nukes and nothing else.

The Alaskans are wondering who is running the Gov's office,Palin or her 1st dude

Patrick of Honolulu   December 5th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

My favorite is "ohio for oboma" below. "Relection" for this oboma dude is apparently now sealed. It's emotional illiterates like this that give the left such a weak platform on which to stand when insulting the intelligence of Republicans, Palin, conservatives ... whatever. Tip – if you're a moron, stay silent. Just try not to speak. We'll all be better off.

Ms. GA   December 5th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Can Obama get into office first?

Cori from Colorado   December 5th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

CNN, please stop giving coverage to these people. Palin lost, and for good reason, and if she runs in 2012, she will lose again. She doesn't get it, no one wants a religious lunatic to run the country. She irritates millions of people with her incessant abuse of the English language, and she knows nothing, she's a moron. Let's move on.

carol   December 5th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Oh my lord, what a formidable pair they will make Sarah will be out there rabble rousing again and Huckabee can be forgiving her sins as she goes along!!!
I guess there will be a place for her old sidekicks, Joe the plumber and Cowboy Hank.....now there's a team you can believe in!!!

MikeH   December 5th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

CNN, why are you letting Republican-biased moderators censor commnents on the ticker?

Any old right-wing extremist hack can post drivel, but you lleave thoughtful intelligent responses in 'awaiting moderation' limbo.

Are you afraid of the people waking up to the utter economic destruction the Republican party has inflicted on America?

proudliberal   December 5th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

huck would be best for republicans. but, as a liberal independent, i doubt i would vote for any republicans ever again.

suzyku   December 5th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

If they top the GOP poll then the Republicans are still clueless and hopeless! All the better for us Democrats!!

Sam   December 5th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

That's great news. Huckabee could be the next Reagan IMO.

CW   December 5th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I caught part of Barbara Walter's interview with Tina Fey last night. She seemed to think that her impersanation of Sarah Palin did'nt hurt her at all. I disagree. I did not see the whole thing, but I wonder if Barbara asked if she was a Democrat? I wonder if Tina would like a try at Michelle Obama? Any one think she'd do it? I don't think so!

Adam Artis   December 5th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Will the media ever get tired of talking about Caribou Barbie.Give us a break.The only way she gets on the ticket is if President-elect Obama does such a great job that the Republicans decide to offer up this incomprehensibly incompetent woman as fish bait while serious Republicans get ready for 2016.Ever hear of Charlie Crist,Bobbie Jindal, Mitt Romney,Jeb Bush.Although I think Bobbie Jindal might be a little to "not like us" for conservative Republicans.The only reason Palin is frightening is because,this is the country that elected,Richard Nixon twice,George Bush twice,Anything I suppose is possible,anything.

TJ Johnson   December 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

I like Gov Huckabee and I think he is a fine man and administrator; however, the people of our country that ridicule men of Christian values will never support him or anyone like him. His example puts too many of us to guilt and shame since so many of our people no longer believe God.

doru radu   December 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

So far she showed some results. Her presence in Georgia scored better than Bill CLinton or the famous Al Gore's support for Deocratic Martin. And I am wondering why?

curious   December 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Ron Paul is the only Republican with a message.

Mike   December 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Hey CNN, note to self:

WHO CARES.

Obama hasn't even taken office yet and you're already guessing at who's going to run in 2012? Give it up. Stop with the speculation and start reporting the news. You know, the business you're supposed to be in.

Robin   December 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Obama has not even been sworn in!!! THIS ARTICLE IS SO DISRESPECTFUL!!! I HAVE NEVER READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATE RIGHT AFTER AN ELECTION. I AM DONE WITH CNN!!!!

Clare Cammack   December 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Oh MY GOSH!!!!!! What is the attraction to Sarah Palin? I though America was smarter than that. She thinks she can see Russia from her house, she allowed herself to be pranked by two very cagy DJ's from Canada, didn't know Africa was a continent and refused to answer the questions at the debate and openly told the moderator she was going to talk about what she wanted to talk about. So, does that give everyone enough information that the woman needs a lot of training and I am not so sure there is enough time to do it. Let's keep Sarah Palin and her journalism major in Alaska!

Jon in Connecticut   December 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Can the media please stop talking about Sarah Palin and the displaced Republican party – they LOST – get over it – and why are we wasting time speaking about her wardrobe and the others when Obama won by 8-9 million votes and an electoral college blow out? End the madness now, stop talking about Sarah Palin (let her govern Alaska and their declining economy with less oil royalties pouring in now for their residents while the rest of subsidized that for years) and don't bring her name or the rest of that bunch up again until January 2012.

Lia   December 5th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Oh goody – that means the Democrats will win again!

Susie from Canada   December 5th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I always surmised that Republicans were a little light in judgement!

Karen from Charlottesville   December 5th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Are Hickabee and Palin are the best the GOP can offer? I suspect they are at the top of the list because they are malleable and can be manipulated by the GOP machine. Don't forget about the entire Palin family "makeover" by the GOP. There are some people behind the scenes who want a folksy candidate out front, but you can be sure that the Cheney's of the world will be pulling the strings of these candidates. That 32% needs to put on their thinking caps.

Gary   December 5th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Ones a Preacher, the other Needs a Preacher.

Chuck   December 5th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Huckabee should've been the candidate this time, but people with influence didn't think he could win so they didn't endorse him. It's their fault we're in the situation we're in. Huckabee could've won!

jm for sc   December 5th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I would love to see Obama smash Palin in a debate. As an Obama supporter, I say, "Bring it on."

Bill   December 5th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

A Palin/Huckabee ticket sounds great to me!
It will give Obama the four additional years he will undoubtably need to clean up the Republican mess we are in now.

Rob Smith III   December 5th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

So four years (i.e. high school or college length) will provide Sarah Palin with the know-how to run a country? She's still lagging behind, having just proven a month or so ago that she couldn't name a newspaper that she read, much less any Supreme Court cases of historic significance. Aren't there any more prospective John Warners out there that can answer the call? I'm sick of a Republican leadership that taps its feet under lavatory stalls and squanders money from the underprivileged every day. We may not need to be forced to provide for the less fortunate but we certainly should have leaders that know how to lead...by example, of course.

Bob in Toledo   December 5th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Hope they run as a team. That would be great. cuzz if they do, we're gonna see 40+ states go blue in 2012.

RCLGuard   December 5th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

If Obama gets us out of this recession and 2 wars, the Republicans could put up Jesus and Obama would still win.

Larry DuBois   December 5th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Huckabee? Palin? This is great news for Democrats far and wide. Maybe they could decide on being running mates and we'll have an all Jesus ticket!

Joe Acarai   December 5th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

This the best news the Democrats can get. The Republican(cons) Party is done. Palin is a brainless politican with an inferior education to handle the Presidency. She is clueless.

jordan   December 5th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

John .What fear do you hear in the sounds of our voices? In case you been sleep since Nov. 3rd until today Your gal lost . Bad too. You have been saying this Dems are scared nonsense since september. Nobody is scared of the 08 loser future 2012 loser we are sick of her, not scared get that through your head you her and your kind lost. And will continue to lose.

great. Obama will win handily.

RCLGuard   December 5th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I actually fear for a Palin candidacy. She has the novelty factor. We've elected a black president and now we should elect a female president. Palin has that going for her and, we, Americans are fickle like that.

But, man, is she a re tard.

Sandymouldin   December 5th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Another boring news about air head Palin ☻

Gary   December 5th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

this is the best news I have heard since the Obama win. I am thrilled to know that if this holds true the Democcrats will have 8 full years. Palin is the best thing that has happened to the Democrats.

RiggsMD KC,Mo.   December 5th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Sarah Palin is not prepared to lead anything whatsoever that has to do with national politics. To continue to attempt to brainwash Americans in believing this woman is a formidable politician is an insult to the intelligence of the people. Huckabee is a religious man, period! Religion and Politics can only end up in Constitutional clashes, leaving this country in even more debilitating circumstances and view around the world. Right now the Republicans don't have anyone that has the chemistry it's going to take to help the people of this country. President Obama will move thru them like an overdose of laxative. Obama 2012

change in America   December 5th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

I hope Palin do wrong for president in 2012 so she can look like a fool on Tv again she is the weakest link in politic's... American should be ashame on saying who should run in 2012 Obama have not got sworn in yet this is disgusting..

Let Obama get sworn in first.

Can you imagine Sarah Palin managing our current economic crisis?
Tell me the Republicans are kidding?

maryderricotte   December 5th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

The damage has not even left the white house, and America is enlisting some more. Well these are the people who have gained from the Bush administration and want to continue selling the turkey pakage to every one. But as Democrats we will stay united and keep fresh in our memoreis the 8 years of autrocities, and most Americans are being laid off there jobs the wil not forget the hunger pains that their children a re going through. This must be some kind of joke or ploy on the people to keep prancing around the republican part when all hell is breaking lose in America. Oh hey that wasn't 150,000.00 worth if wardrobe Sarah palin spent an additional 30,000.00 on cloths totalling 180,000.00 more money tha I make in15 years of hard work. Slap in the poor mans face. However I will be continue to campaign also , agaisnt this knightmare team.

EB   December 5th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

She killed McCain and she'll do the same for anyone she's with in 2012. Peel back a layer or two from the onion and you'll see that she may be popular but she's not fit for public office. I say let her run, the repblican party needs to go a long way before they can win me back. They can start with a hard line against the fundamentailst god and country groups.

MikeH   December 5th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

The Republicans should go over to the Afgan-Pakistan border and recruit some Taliban fundamentalists to inject some new blood into what their party is becoming.

The REPUBLICAN party (knock of that GOP crap CNN) is going to religious extremist irrational ends. It has no use or understanding of science or scientific principles. It is turning into a medieval dark-age-type of organization. It is just a short hop from torturing suspected terrorists to torturing by inquisition suspected sinners.

For those of you who suscribe to what the Republican party is turning into, you are not American, you're evil.

Charles L. Shaw, Liverpool, NY   December 5th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Yawn, the GOP is history, old ideas, wrong solutions.
Let's give Barack a chance to create his changes, though I see very little differances in his solutions.

Michelle, PA   December 5th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

...And one year before the 2008 election, everybody thought the republican nomination would come down to Guiliani and Romney – while Hillary was a shoo-in for the Dems. Funny how things can change ina relatively short time. Here's a thought: How about waiting until the new president is sworn in before starting the next Presidential campaign?

Armando   December 5th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

The only one who can win and is good is Ron Paul. That is it.

Jim, Addison, Tx   December 5th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

2 Creationists on one ticket? I can't think of a better way of alienating the rest of the world from us than throwing some pre-Enlightenist thinking in the White House. America is now going to be run by Sunday school teachers and religious zealots?

Surafel Melaku   December 5th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Let's hope she will get the Russian story straight this time. She has to catch up big time to run 2012. Not only Sarah even Huk. has to do a lot more with Obama holding Joe – Clinton – Richardson on his team. It is unthinkable to see Obama lose if he run again 2012.

Adam   December 5th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Palin and Huckabee as the frontrunners for the GOP in 2012? Obama just got his second term!

Ever notice that any time a Republican gets elected, the intellectually bankrupt trickle-down Reaganomics and War-For-A-Better-Economy tactics they try and enact leaves the country in shambles?

Joan , Ontario   December 5th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Huckabee would be a fine candidate. He would have given Obama a much tougher fight than McCain did. However, there is no way that Sarah Palin would be a credible national candidate. The fact that the Republican party would even consider this shows how deep their problems are. Because Obama is so popular, intelligent, confident and presidential, the American voters definitely made the correct choice this time. The Republicans have left him the worst mess that any new President has had to contend with so if he helps the country turn around, solves many of the problems and restores your reputation around the world, then it would take somebody with incredible depth to beat him. She would have to do quite a make-over to even be in his league.

jack debrot, new york, new york   December 5th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

to the tune of "aquarius": "oh this is the age of oba-a-ma; oh ma-a-ma----" yea – the 'bama was born in a manger on another planet and has come to earth on the space ship of the "ancient mariners" to make all the geniuses who have written their comments here happy and all the simple people who cleave to their guns and religion will learn to love the 'bama and drink kool aid too. and he will visit with the republicans and they will dispute with him no longer and he will visit the nations and they will hail him as great and the 'bama will not let the united states fight any other country unless all the world agreed that we should (not like that nasty bush) and the world will be a better place – la la la.

Frank   December 5th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

well that should seal the fate of the Republican party once and for all. Two Creationists directing the country? I think not. I hope the rest of the country is ready for anti-Christian backlash. I fior one think my Athestic prayers have been answered.

Robert Wooller Bradford England UK   December 5th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Well, she wouldn't get my vote if I could vote. Her career is dead in national politics. Surely her huge loss with McCain proved that. She ought to retire from office, become unemployed and leave the Democrats and good Republicans to clear the mess up right wing Republicans like her have caused.

Save the animals she has killed in Alaska.

NYC Native   December 5th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

God help us!

Todd   December 5th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

For those of you Republicans who think us Dems are "afraid" of Sarah Palin running agagin..... Are you delusional??! Nice way to twist that around. I don't want to see her again because she has nothing to offer and I think her ego needs to stop being fed. On the other side, to echo most people's comments, bring her on! Obama will be a shoe-in in 2012 if she runs again! I love it!

Louis   December 5th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

THIS IS THE BEST THE REPUBLICANS CAN FIND? Out of all the Republicans in the country, these are the top two? After 8 years of Bush, most Americans are sick of born-again, holy-roller, dogmatic leaders. Time for America to wake up and lead with intelligent and pragmatic solutions.

Vegas Barbie for Obama   December 5th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

OMG, this has to stop. As to all the potential "wanna be's" the so-called "unknown", Jindal, has a better shot than any of the rest of those right wing nuts. Rudy Guiliani is SO last millenium, let it go, Mr. Noun-Verb-9/11, and Palin, well, please. Huckabee is at least a person one could listen to without having one's intelligence go down a peg or two with every syllable spoken. Any way you cut it, folks, with such people on the roster, Obama is GUARANTEED a second term!

P. D.   December 5th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

This is a joke right? Palin? Sure, Huckabee seems like a decent guy, I admire him, but I will never vote for a candidate who is so religious. As for Palin, the woman cannot string ONE intelligible sentence together. She is like a bad rash that won't go away.

Jim   December 5th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

So 32% would support Palin and that is a statistical tie to Huckabee. It is also a statistical tie to the 28 or so % of people that thought Bush was doing a good job as president. That says an awful lot right there of who those people are.

Mwanakijiji   December 5th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Go Palin.. I love you but women hates you because you are cute and sexy.

Mike the amazed   December 5th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

I guess with all the budget cuts, the mental institutions must have released a number of patients who just happened to be polled on Palin and Huckabee.

Allen, Jacksonville, Florida   December 5th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Yeah, and in 2006, we thought Rudy Giuliani was a sure bet for the GOP ticket.

Newsweek's 2004 "How He Did It" issue (following the general election), didn't even mention Obama as a 2008 hopeful.

Jason   December 5th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

I suppose you just "forgot" about Ron Paul huh? This is typical MSM censorship/propaganda for your corporate masters. Everytime I hear the phrase "free press" in this country it makes me want to puke!

Neal   December 5th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Great. Just shows that Republicans are regressing to ultra religious and ultra conservative types that turn off the moderates and independents that they desperately need to win. They just can't re-invent themselves. Just like trying to sell McCain as an agent of change. It will be great having a 2 term Obama presidency.

John   December 5th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

This is one of the best endorsements Obama could get. This is the Republican way of saying we don't want the office. Maybe they have learned.

We do need a true conservative party, absent the religious extremists, to help this country get back on the right track. We need the Republican party to repair itself and get back to being a serious party that has something positive to offer America. Palin and Huckabee have nothing to offer or they would have been viable this time.

Gayle   December 5th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Stop already. Enough please

Tom   December 5th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Huckabee/Palin 2012! Obama will get 400+ electoral votes!!!

D. M. George   December 5th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Please give us a break! Who cares who is ahead in a poll for the 2012 election? One thing learned this year is that whoever is ahead now may well not be part of the picture then. Give the election thing a rest. It is time to take care of the problems now not the election in 4 years.

yjn   December 5th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

By having either of these two on top of the ticket will make GOP the permanent minority party. GOP needs to move to the center not further to the right to be relevant.

hunter thompson   December 5th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Perfect! Music to every democrat's ears. Put her on the ticket again, so that Obama can walk into his second term.

To Jason Hoffman   December 5th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Maybe you should move there so you can truly show your support.

chris juelch   December 5th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

are you kidding? Even if she can learn the many countries of North America by then, or if by some miracle she opens a geography book and concludes that Africa is not a country...................She'll still be Sarah "you betcha Joe" Palin. ......come on people, let's let this klondike rube go back to Alaska and let that be their burden. They elected her to an office, not the rest of us.

Huckabee? man oh man.......might as well look to 2016. Huckabee/Palin or vice-versa (sic), would be another loser, even bigger than this election, which was McCain/Palin........I thought the "GOP" already voted that McCain was better than Huckabee, which proved again to be a loser. LOL. What is this, the "presidential hopeful recycling program"?

Jesus/God '16

LOL, bye bye, "GOP"

Bill   December 5th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

To know Palin's future, you simply have to look at the oil commodities market. Thankfully for everyone except Alaskans, that market has collapsed and will recover extremely slowly over the next 2 years. So Palin's windfall tax checks are gone, as is painless funding for her energy production and transportation projects (which were only in the planning stages, regardless of what the campaign said). She won't make it out of her term as governor in any type of shape to run for President. She had a good 15 minutes.

karen-phoenix   December 5th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

PS: And I was a republican for over 40 years but NO MORE!!! The republican party has become the party of very uneducated right wing nuts!!!

Erik from Real Pennsylvania   December 5th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Dear Republican Party:
Oh, please please PLEASE run this pair as the 2012 ticket.
Sincerely,
The Democrats

Joa   December 5th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

I truly believe there is no new information today. Still this woman has no brain. And to make it worse she actually believe that she would be able to make a full coherent sentence coming 2012!?!?!?!? What a joke she has become. She will be remember for her looks and NO brain. Go America!

erik   December 5th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Palin beats Huckabee in a landslide. Afterall, Huckabee doesn't have foreign policy experience like Palin...Arkansas isn't close enough to a foreign country.

BongoTodd   December 5th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Sweet!!! Another Victory for the Dems...Oh Sarah what is NAFTA stand for again. Hahahahahahahah. Is Africa really a Country? Good God Sarah, just sit up in Alaska, and act like your doing something important.

Ruby   December 5th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

How the hell will the GOP win the white house in 2012 if Obama does his job well (which i think he will be) in his first term? Stick to what is working for America!

Maggie   December 5th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Palin runs in 2012....

I predict a Democratic electoral landslide that might put the landslide of the Reagan vs. Mondale campaign to shame (Mondale only got 13 electoral votes). The democrats might even walk away with 100% of the electoral vote in that election!

Talk about one for the record books!

marc   December 5th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

On a slow newsday there is nothing like a good laugh. Obama won because of change and pulling to the center. Extreme views like Huckelberry Hound and Sheena Queen of the Frozen Tundra are out of tune. Anyway give it a rest. Happy Holidays to all.

Glenn in California   December 5th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Huckabee? Maybe.

Palin? Who's going to be her running mate? Joe the Plumber? By the time 2012 rolls around, Palin is going to be the answer to a trivia question.

Either way, if President-elect Obama does a good job, there's no chance for any Republican. It would be great to see Palin as the candidate. Obama would have a chance to sweep all 50 states, including Alaska.

MC-Atlanta   December 5th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

If the Christian Right keeps a strangle Hold on the GOP , well then I guess Democrats will keep winning across the country.

Get with the times folks...times are a' changin..

Mike Dallas   December 5th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

What's her name has 4 years to flash more leg and wink at the repug men and get them to boost her popularity to the top of the ticket.

Palin/Huckabee 2012

Please, Please Please, let this be a prophecy that comes true!!!!

pam Eugene OR   December 5th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

That is great news. If that is the best the GOP can come up with...a preacher and a brain dead woman the Democrats will be in power for a very long time.
There is no middle with either of these people and they will only attract the ever shrinking Republican base.

GOP Campaign Strategy   December 5th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Guess they are looking to lose the 2012 election along with the 2008 one. Huckabee does play the guitar, and Sarah does hunt moose, so they will have something to start campaigning on. Their voter base,of guitar playing moose hunters is a start no matter how small it may be.. You Betcha!

John   December 5th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

These elections are turning into a circus.

Brilliant Comment Gerri.

Josh Maloney, Oakland, CA   December 5th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

I'm not surprised that a significant number of Americans still back the uninformed, polarizing and incompetent Governor from Alaska.

Steve   December 5th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Obama won the presidency and the citizens of our country – and the world – shouted and danced in the streets. Name ONE person in the Republican party that could ever get that kind of adoration. It ain't Sarah Palin or Mr. Huckabee. Republicans still haven't learned there lesson.

Emily   December 5th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Why doesn't someone ask this good Christian woman why she
champions the brutal slaughter of wolves in Alaska? Also, why
she is pushing to have trophy hunting of Polar Bears, an endangered species made legal. She is such an evil hypocrite, too stupid to
realize that other life forms wern't made for us to slaughter at a whim.

If this is a Christian, I am so glad I am not.

mike   December 5th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

In other words, the party as a whole just set themselves up to loose again.

Jack in cali   December 5th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Yikes! Please not either of them. Aren't there other qualified republicans out there that can invigorate the party?? The moral vote happened in 2004 and we see where that got us; don't let it happen in 2012!

Mari   December 5th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

@ RAEFORD IN NC........ dude, we ALREADY tried the "folksy, ah-chucks" president! WE DO NOT WANT ANOTHER BUSH!

PALIN IS JUST 'CUTE'...... NO SUBSTANCE...NO BRAINS.

IF she were a Democrat the far-right-family-values crowd would have CRUCIFIED PALIN FOR ABANDONING HER FAMILY FOR HER AMBITIONS!

RSB   December 5th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I just heard what the RNC spent on Palin in a two month period for hair and make up. Shows where their priorities are. Republicans should be so angry that their contributions were used this way. That doesn't count what she spent on clothing. Again, priorities. No wonder they lost.
Wouldn't mind Huckabee but please find someone else to run with him.

karen-phoenix   December 5th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

PS: AND I WAS a republican for over 40 years but NO MORE!!!! It's become the party of uneducated right wing nuts and skinheads!

James   December 5th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

If you truly believe that Bush and the Republicans are solely responsible for everything that is going wrong with the economy you are either ignorant or stupid and either way have no business calling Palin or Huckabee stupid.

John   December 5th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Palin is radical and divisive and worst..ignorant. Africa is a continent sweepee. Take some foreign leadership courses and then we can talk. Repbulican"s have made ignorance a virtue, so long as you say he right words.

Thank God its OVER. We FINALLY have a BRILLIANT PRESIDENT.

Huckaby is likable, but not Presidential.

I voted for Bush1, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush, OBAMA.

I've never lost. I'm bellweather. No lie.

Stephanie from FL   December 5th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Hah! If this country actually votes for yet another incompetent Republican to head the GOP, then I only hope that they get what's coming. Ridiculous, to think that an Evangelical or brainless twit could come even close to becoming our country's greatest leader, especially with such a fantastic man like Obama running for the opposing party.

2009-2012 will mark four great years for America. We can only hope that the chance to continue a legacy of true change and hope for us will be extended for another four.

Obama '08 and '12. :)

Chris   December 5th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Is it me or does the GOP put more spin on elections than the DNC?

The GOP clearly think this election was "stolen" from them... but if they had won, it would have been a victory.

no fear   December 5th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

let's just hope the collective margin of intellect widens in the next four years.
Huckabee, maybe.
Palin? Categorically, no.

Common Sense!!!   December 5th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

George Bush made America from Super Power to broken America.
if Palin becomes President then she'll make America 3rd world country. then all 3rd world country will laugh at us.

Kelcie   December 5th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I am an Independent and I actually quite like Huckabee. Unless someone else comes forward, he may be the Republicans best shot.

Frustrated with the Coverage   December 5th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Look guys. Can we let the current President-elect get inaugurated before the flurry of 2012 speculation? It is unreasonable hype.

Geoff Calver   December 5th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Are we kidding around here? Mike Huckabee??? And Sarah Palin, who single-handedly destroyed John McCain's campaign??? How about Mitt Romney, a man who actually knows his way around the economy and who isn't a socially uber-conservative nutjob?

Joe-Wilmington, DE   December 5th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

...as Democratic Party members cheer wildly at the continuing stupidity of Republican right-wingers!

Franky   December 5th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Me personally, I like the Huckster. It is ironic that Gov Palin does well with men(is it really a surprise?) whle the Huckster does well with women. Pretty interesting separation, based on this of course. But if it came down to the Huckster or Palin, I would personally choose the Huckster over her.

sandee in Portland   December 5th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

It's interesting that more men would vote for Palin than women; just goes to show you that us women don't want just any old woman in office, only the intelligent, well qualified ones

PJ December 5th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Raeford NC – Can you give me one example of Sarah Palin using common sense? I'm really curious as to how people of your mentality envision things. Seriously. I need to find out why she is such a sensation to some people.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She's such a sensation to those kind of people because they think with their head instead of their brain.
Thank God 68% of the population think differently!
Obama is YOUR next POTUS!!! Hip Hip Horray!
Charlie   December 5th, 2008 4:02 pm ET
Character counts; Gov.Palin has it, Obama hasn't .
lynn   December 5th, 2008 4:02 pm ET
karen-phoenix   December 5th, 2008 4:02 pm ET
Huckabee's not to bad. Educated man. BUT NO PALIN!!!! She is soooo uneducated and she allowed her kids to all be high school drop outs!!!! NOT a good example for families who NEED to educated their children. Obama is the perfect example–both he and his wife who put themselves through to Masters Degree and believes in true Family Values!!!
Brian C   December 5th, 2008 4:01 pm ET
Can't you already see his strategy... I can't stand this guy. He knows many IRAQ vets will be coming back in the next 2,3,4 years. He relentlessly has bagged the government for the obvious problems we all forsee with this "bailing out" of people because he knows at that time he can say as he is saying right now "see, we shoudl have put that money where it needed to go, the vets"...
I hate people who support something so they can make a situation mold to there benefit when the time is right... it's insincere. Plus... the guy preaches too much!
wwf   December 5th, 2008 4:00 pm ET
If those two are the best that the Republican Party have to offer, they should save their money and wait until 2016. Palin with a ged and how many years to get through Junior College? Sorry Huck, the majority of people are not ready for your bible thumping. On the issues alone? That would be a no brainer. The Huckster!
Jill   December 5th, 2008 4:00 pm ET
Which one has a larger margin among comedians surveyed?
jean brandt   December 5th, 2008 4:00 pm ET
Sarah Palin – the gift that keeps on giving – to the Democrats. Palin has shown, over and over again, that she prefers style over substance, so it's a sure bet that she won't be any smarter four years from now.
Joseph   December 5th, 2008 3:59 pm ET
When will the Right learn they can' t nominate religious extremists and expect to win the Presidency? Huckabee and Palin have no better chance of being elected than Jesse Jackson did coming from the left.
To win the presidency, you must be somewhat of a moderate. The two clowns are NOT moderates.
Ambrose Smith, Borrego Springs, California   December 5th, 2008 3:59 pm ET
It's going to be who "outChristians" the other.
"I'm more of a Christian!"
"No! I am!"
"No you're not!"
"Am too!"
etc.
Obama will crush either so no worries from me!
ohio for oboma   December 5th, 2008 3:59 pm ET
Jason, Omaha   December 5th, 2008 3:59 pm ET
Do any of your "experts" know why these two top the list? because NOBODY CARES who will run in 2012 and since these names are the most recent, freshest names, people will name them. You need to fire your political team!
Huckabee to be Sarah's VP in 2012   December 5th, 2008 3:59 pm ET
Biblvr777   December 5th, 2008 3:59 pm ET
Huckabee is an excellent choice. The GOP needs to make the 2012 election a referendum on ABORTION. Only morality can save the Republican Party.
Gail   December 5th, 2008 3:58 pm ET
LOL! If this is the best the GOPeepers can come up with then it's Democrats all the way for the next 30 years. LOL!!! ROFLMAO!!!!
Robert Bauer, Sonoma County, CA   December 5th, 2008 3:58 pm ET
This is great news! Both of these candidates are sure losers. Unfortunately, the Republican party has 4 years to come to its senses, and given their inclination to say and do incredibly stupid things, that's a lot of time for these two to fall out of favor.
Sandy   December 5th, 2008 3:58 pm ET
Oh, gosh I hope they are the candidates in 2012. We've got to get Barack reelected. What a joke.
Bob (Illinois)   December 5th, 2008 3:58 pm ET
Sarah who?
Dean P Valencia Ca   December 5th, 2008 3:58 pm ET
You can not win an election with only 32% of the population. Hello?
Hank from Atlanta   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
What a bunch of misled sheep!!
keeth in california   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
And neither of them will win.
Chuck in LA   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
The GOP lost this year because they've become too focused on their rabid and intractable base. These two play to the same rabid and intractable base. Does the GOP want to lose again?
Jason in TX   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
In four years nobody will care anymore about Sarah Palin, just like this political season, yea, she was unknown and that made it interesting, but after a couple months with that whiney voice and that stupid winking, it got old. She is like a new car, yea, its all cool and neat at first, then you get tired of it after awhile and want to trade it in for something new.
Sarah to replace the woos Obama in 12'   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
Obama will be run over by the Iranians, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban strictly because he is a woos. He'll negotiate with them and come back home like Chamberlain waving a piece of paper stating "Peace in our time."
However. they'll take all of his woos offers and then do what they want anyway. Sarah-it will be up to you to save us from this woos in 2012.
Jack in Toledo   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
Yeppy for us Republicans, let's put another losing Team together!!! What happen to lessons learned? No wonder we lost the race for the White House. Our Republican party is becoming a be disappointment. Where are the bright minds??? Yikes, We are in big trouble if we think this is the team of the future. GOP lets get out of this old numb stage and push the real GOP ideas, Not these clowns!!! bring the qualified people to the table. Please not Palin again.... God Help America..!!!!!
Beverly, NYC   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
Huckabee & Palin huh, what's the matter Joe the Plumber not available? Good luck with all that Republicans.
Common Sense!!!   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
Are these politicians going to play with American People's Emotion??
Gov Palin is not ready for any level of politics. because she is shooting
and spraying some negative words that does not mean she is going to be good leader to lead our Nation. if she is going to run in 2012
trust me then she'll face real tough media. last time media were very
easy on her. i also think she needs to get degree in political science.
Pat   December 5th, 2008 3:57 pm ET
Obviously, you people who say you are conservatives and are for Huckabee and/or Palin are "SOCIAL" conservatives, not necessarily fiscal conservatives. Right now, and probably for many years down the road, there are bigger problems than social issues to be concerned about. Our country is falling apart financially and people are losing their jobs and homes. We need brave, smart leaders to get us out of this mess. And while I usually agree with fiscal conservatism, I also understand the maxim that it takes money to make money so we may need to spend to create jobs and help people out until those jobs are available. Once people get back to work, then they will have the money to spend and help the economy even further.
Ernie   December 5th, 2008 3:56 pm ET
Obama had better fullfill a whole bunch of promises or he will have some tough competion in 2012. Obama has 4 years to screw up and Palin has 4 years to improve. Do not underestimate a woman.
Godluvr   December 5th, 2008 3:56 pm ET
P.S. It just hit me: These crazy news stories are the Republicans' way of keeping hope alive! They are now trying to become a copy of the rainbow coalition! They need to stay in the spotlight to remain relevant! Haaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Concerned Voter from GA   December 5th, 2008 3:56 pm ET
This Just In....SARAH – YOU LOST! READ MY LIPSTICK – YOU LOST!The country is in a crisis...and all you care about is 2012...So, does Sarah have a plan for our devastated economy? NO...that's why she LOST. Can we inaugurate the President-elect who won the 2008 election, please?
Morris da Pitti   December 5th, 2008 3:56 pm ET
It's clear that the Republicans are simply surrendering to their right wing and thereby taking their party out of serious contention. I think many supporters of Huckabee and Palin are saying, "Well, they may be stupid, but they think like I do!" Enough said.
cherish   December 5th, 2008 3:56 pm ET
Awesome.
I hope this is the future of the Republican party, because they will continue to lose elections.
I am a Christian, but AMERICA IS NOT A THEOCRACY and choosing less moderate, far-right candidates will only bring the destruction of the Republican party.
PRAISE THE LORD.
Pat   December 5th, 2008 3:56 pm ET
CNN. Why don't you moderate fairly. There are FCC rules concerning this.
Denver Dem   December 5th, 2008 3:55 pm ET
Bob from San Fran love your comment. Figures these morons would start pushing Palin 2 months before barack becomes president. Come on folks you know nazi-istic propaganda doesn't get spread overnight.
As far as huckabee is concerned he should have been the one this time around but the idiots that run the party can't figure it out. the need a value change not a image change.
Also anyone who would vote for Mooseburger b/c she is hot, are pathetic human beings who I am disgraced to say are Americans, truly pathetic each and every one of you
Pat   December 5th, 2008 3:55 pm ET
P J.
Last year Palin knew that Oil Prices can vary greatly and instead of doing like the Governor of NY and spending every single dime she set aside $5 Billion. Now whiloe the GOV of NY is begging for $47 Billion of my hardworking dollars GOV Palin will be able to storm a downturn in the price of oil in Alaska. Sounds like a lot of common sense to me and sounds like the GOV of NY who practices the Tax and spend Obama policy has no common sense.
Donna   December 5th, 2008 3:55 pm ET
Give me a break. The only people who would want to see either of these two in the top spot are the crazy news reporters who love to spin a story. These two people are not in touch with the majority of Americans no matter how many ways reporters try to spin the numbers, polls or interviews with loud mouth nobodies. Please stop clogging up my computer with stories of these two people.
G.R.I.T.S. - Girl Raised in the South   December 5th, 2008 3:55 pm ET
Wonderful. The brilliant members of the GOP prefer two people who cannot seem to separate the Christian Bible from the rule of law. I am a lifelong Methodist Christian and I prefer the U.S. to be ruled by the Constitution and for the separation of church and state to remain solid. Unfortunately, the GOP chooses individuals who are striving for a theocracy. I don't know if this can be blamed on regional issues, social issues such as homosexuality and abortion, or if Republicans truly believe that their way is the only way. Screw the Buddists, Muslims, Atheists, Hindus, etc. As a matter of fact, screw any mainstream, liberal or moderate Christian organizations, right?
cann   December 5th, 2008 3:55 pm ET
President Sarah Palin, Vice-President Joe Wurzelbacher, and Secretary-of-State Hank Williams, Jr. . Now that's a group-intellect that will get the World's attention.
What in the world were 32% of those polled thinking about ?? Thank God for the other 68% !!
Obama bought the white house!
It is historic, on my neighborhood I see the lines very long whaiting for free food, all kinds of people, whites and black and spanish , asian etc. and all are driving a good cars.
If this peoplen send money to Obama to get elected, well good luck I hope Obama send all the $780 millions that people send to him to buy the White House, get what their deserve.
Obama should give the money back!
Charity Now is the most important thing to do now! People are on lines waiting for free food. GET THE MONEY BACK TO CHARITY NOW Obama, you don't need a party , people are hangry!
Derek   December 5th, 2008 3:55 pm ET
Palin is a bright as a mud cake on a raining day. Are we as a human race that absent minded to even consider this woman in any sort of position of decision making? My head hurts even at the thought..Oh I have an idea; I might run for office; but of course after Obama has straightened out our economy and world standing...thanks.
Why would we want 2008 rejects as our candidates in the future? What part of they didn't win makes anyone think they can win in the future?
Thank God I am a Democrat because if you can even visualize a President Palin, than I need to move to another country. Hopefully Barak Obama will be President 8 years and after that I pray someone with a brain and vision runs for President after that. We are at a pointy in humanity that we have to be real careful who we elect. The world is too dangerous and we have too many hurting people to have a scatterbrain in office ...just because some men think she is hot.
Give me a break.
Andy   December 5th, 2008 3:54 pm ET
We still don't get it – the majority of the country is moderate/center/right not right. They're more focused on solutions to immediate economic problems, not conservative values on social issues. We continue to be like a car manufacturer insisting on a product that nobody wants.
I bet these same people would've embraced McCain's campaign if he had run it like 2000 with a clear, focused economic message taking "real solutions to real problems" approach and with a team of advisers that were ready to tackle them. Palin rallied the base, not the majority of the country.
Ipityyoufools   December 5th, 2008 3:54 pm ET
Keep laughing, obama supporters, keep laughing. You will all regret having voted for a totally inexperienced man to be PUTUS. You guys are all idiots and don't like Palin because she is REAL, unlike superficial and smooth talking his majesty, messiah, obama. You think Bush was bad..........
gunguy   December 5th, 2008 3:53 pm ET
When would GOP stop fielding dumb candidates? They seem to be digging more in the hole they are in and good for Democrats. Let Palin first learn to speak a whole sentence that makes any sense before getting excited. And advise her to stop winking – it is very very cheap.
ANAG LOS ANGELES, CA   December 5th, 2008 3:53 pm ET
I love how people view Huckabee and Palin as unintelligent. The last I look both have already successfully been Executives. Palin has $5 Billion set aside for the tough economic times and gave money back to her citizens. The state that Obama legislated is already running a big deficit and with the bailout plan took $700 Billion from his citizens and gave it to a known idoit Paulson. With that said who is intelligent and who is not? Oh and the intelligent Obama is already planning to take (not give) another $1 Trillion from his citizens. Doesn't sound smart to me. As far as Paulson abusing the Bailout money. Obama voted to give the guy a blank check so I blame Obama.
Wendy NC   December 5th, 2008 3:52 pm ET
CNN – read my lips – NO MORE PALIN STORIES, until she is recalled or impeached – please.
Dan   December 5th, 2008 3:52 pm ET
John: These comments are so predictable….."I just wish she would go away?"…….."Aren't her 15 minutes up?"……."Why are we still talking about her?"……..I love hearing the sound of fear in your voices. Heheheheheeeeee!
And I love your predictable "you all are so scared" comment. Simpleton.
The only thing more horrifying than the last 8 years is the thought that this country could EVER elect someone as phony and unintelligent and self-serving as Sarah Palin. God help us all should that day ever come...surely, surely people will get to know her well enough over the next four years that it would only be considered a bad joke to nominate her for anything other than head cheerleader.
Someone paid good money for a poll to find out who's ahead in an election four years from now? Why limit yourselves to four years? Find out who's ahead for 2040!
Cathy Brandes   December 5th, 2008 3:51 pm ET
I firmly believe, if the GOP has a chance at all in 2012, they need to seriously look at the moderate members of their party. Gov. Pawlenty of MN, Gov. Jindahl of LA and Gov. Crist of FL because if they continue to look to the ultra conservative wing of their party, they will not win. I am hopeful that President Obama will be a strong president and perhaps by 2016 the GOP will figure it out! If not, I look forward to many years of strong democratic leadership.
Gov Palin is not the answer, she is part of the problem. With what is facing the country at the present time, let's concentrate on the problems at hand!
Jimmy -Gilbert, AZ   December 5th, 2008 3:51 pm ET
Barbara   December 5th, 2008 3:50 pm ET
Those who think Palin is good enough to be President is just as empty headed as Palin. Gee, she don't read remember. What is wrong with you people? She needs at least 12 years education to catch up with the rest of the world!
kathy   December 5th, 2008 3:50 pm ET
If Palin were to be thrown in the mix for prez, then by all means get joe the plumber as her running mate because the US of A would be in the toilet.....as it was with Bush!
Wayne from Fullerton, CA   December 5th, 2008 3:50 pm ET
I'd love Sarah Palin to run in 2012. What better way to ensure Obama will be re-elected.
James   December 5th, 2008 3:50 pm ET
Republican, Conservative elite, Kristol, etc.
Congratulations. Your party has officially been kidnapped. You are now seeing the substitution of the bible for the Constitution and the shifting of your party so far to the right you may never get it back. The people who support Huck and Palin have a true disdain for intelligence and accomplishment like Romney (although he has his problems too), etc.
This verifies that the party is split. The blissfully ignorant bible thumpers who are one or two issue voters and the intelligencia of the Conservative. The two are not the same.
I will certainly entertain PALIN AS PRESIDENT AND HUCKABEE AS VP. I was a HILLARY man but now have been converted thanks to the following, KENNEDYS, OPRAH, HILLARY(Herself), REZKO, WRIGHT, PLEGHIFER, RICHARDSON, THE TERRORIST. AND ALL THE REST OF YOU IMMORAL LEFT WING NUT CASES.
Vijay   December 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET
Why am I not surprised that one of the biggest GOP moneymakers last year was left off the list? CNN, why don't you do what you and other media usually do? That is, just delete 2 out of every 3 votes that go to Ron Paul. That way the poll will at least look unbiased on its face.
SJC   December 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET
Shouldn't the headline be:
"Huckabee and Palin top early 1012 list"
Palin and Huckabee are fitter to lead us into the 11th century rather than the 21st. Both deny proven science and have reactionary simple minded views that are more suitable to religious fanaticism than the technological advancement and forward thinking required in the century ahead.
Chris   December 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET
Jozee,
"America needs intelligent, thoughtful people in the W.H"
So we need Obama? Mike Huckabee was one of the more intelligent people in the race, and he far out does Barack.
S9   December 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET
Wait till she runs against the republican smear machine in the primaries. Then she'll realize the difference between being elected for national office, and being selected.
These names are dreams come true for Dems. – it's Obama winning in 2012 for sure. The best ticket for republicans would be Jeb & Jindal. But Jeb has that unfortunate last name...he needs at least 8 years to have his family name rehabilitated.
Scott (Camarillo, Ca)   December 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET
Everyone is talking about how good Obama is but I guess forgot he is not president yet and we will finally know how good he will be for the country soon. However we need to stop saying how great he until he proves otherwise and that he is going to be president for a 2nd term until we see how well he really is. He could be a total flap or a miracle worker. I do believe the GOP has died and needs to wake up and figure out what we Americans are really needing and that is to fix this broken economy.
LLW   December 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET
doesnt anybody else have anything to say that is nice about sarah palin? give her a break!!! also the clothes that were bought for her were also donated. is there a problem with that?
Jkay - KCMO   December 5th, 2008 3:48 pm ET
WHY????????
Does Palin want to run............is the RNC as stupid as she is? This is all to impossible for me to grasp as even a remote possibility.
FA   December 5th, 2008 3:48 pm ET
With the vocabulary of a 13-year old, a knack for moose stew that most Americans couldn't care about, a habit of exploiting her Down's Syndrome baby for political points... What a candidate she will be!
By not electing McCain, America dogded the bullet that is Sara Palin. But we aren't smart enough to realize that yet.
We will, though. We will.
EARL THE PEARL   December 5th, 2008 3:48 pm ET
Well, while I don't agree with some of Huckabee's policies (and his reluctance to admit that the earth really IS billions of years old), PAINFUL? HHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! She is experiencing one REALLY big acid trip if she thinks she's qualified to be president ... HHHHHHAAAAAAAAAA!!!! The mildly retarded guy in my building has more upstairs than she does ... LOL!!
Great News for Obama!!! But what do you expect from people who put numnuts, Bush, in the White House for 8 years! I'm sorry, but I don't think these folks should even be allowed to vote after the disaster of the Bush/Cheney regime. Pathetic, especially Palin...ew gads!!
Roy, Houston   December 5th, 2008 3:46 pm ET
Sorry, Palin and Huckabee. If Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal gets in it, they'll be shooting for the number 2 spot on the ticket.
Greg Hodges   December 5th, 2008 3:46 pm ET
What does it take for that no nothing hillbilly from Alaska to just go away. It is driving me crazy that anybody could still seriously think she is qualified to be Gov. of Alaska; let alone having a prayer of running against Barack Obama in 2012. It would be a gift that even the Republicans are too smart to give. Barack Obama on his worst day would make mincement out of this airhead!!!
hugh ~ california   December 5th, 2008 3:46 pm ET
If that's the best they've got, just skip the next election and grant Obama eight straight years in the whitehouse. It will save America millions of dollars that would just go to waste! In four years Obama won't even need to campaign. Lol! :)
PJP   December 5th, 2008 3:46 pm ET
Come on Huckabee and Palin! I do not agree with his religious convictions but I sure do agree with Sarah Palin's. Yes, God help us, help us make it thru this next 4 years.
I'm all for the wicked witch of the north running for Pres. It would pretty much guarantee President Obama's re-election.
It's Sarah Palin in 2012   December 5th, 2008 3:45 pm ET
I told Michelle Obama not to do too much decorating in the White House as she'll be gone in 2012. Obama will fail to revive the economy and Iran will take over the middle east with it's soon to be announced nuclear weapons; leading to Obama's failure to get re-elected.
See you in 12' Sarah.
Ed, Santa Fe, NM   December 5th, 2008 3:45 pm ET
ENOUGH ABOUT THIS BOOB
Geoff   December 5th, 2008 3:45 pm ET
This constant polling is out of control! I'm 100% sick of reading about what a select few think...about everything.
P.S. Sarah Palin is going to be a footnote in political history
Lisa P   December 5th, 2008 3:45 pm ET
It would be nice for the GOP to pick a reality-based candidate for a change. I would like to have a choice on election day between two candidates who believe that government is best run by study and good planning. Eight years of George W. Bush have shown where blind unthinking ideology and prayer will get us.
SR   December 5th, 2008 3:44 pm ET
Recipe for disaster, you people really think Palin could be a leader ? She may have the looks, but not the brains, god help us all if this nomination succeeds.
Get Real   December 5th, 2008 3:44 pm ET
zaphod2000   December 5th, 2008 3:44 pm ET
Good! Four more years of Obama. I cannot believe that these two are the best the GOP has to offer. We just finished a campaign that lasted forever. Let's now think of these people until it gets closer to the time.
Cindy   December 5th, 2008 3:44 pm ET
I still [Heart!!] Huckabee. He doesn't follow the crowd. He was the first Republican to say give Rev. Wright a break.
If the Republicans chose Mike Huckabee to go up against Obama in 2012, while I would not support him, I will have admiration for him and for the Repub. Party. If they chose Palin... well... then they still haven't learned anything.
MLH   December 5th, 2008 3:44 pm ET
Well, if this is the best that the GOP has to offer, so be it. Frankly I won't be voting for either one of them, ever, in any combination.
Larry Karmel   December 5th, 2008 3:44 pm ET
Might as well innaugurate Obama for 2012 now. Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm Not Missing The Old Mule & Winky Half-baked Alaska   December 5th, 2008 3:44 pm ET
Great! I see another guaranteed and widespread Democratic victory in four years with those two as the only "hopefuls". And the Repulsicans better stop their "celebrity" bashing now that Sir Huckabee has his own show. Doesn't Jindal have some exorcism stories to clear up before he can run for higher office? Just the three of them make for good tabloid fodder form now until the next election.
jean   December 5th, 2008 3:44 pm ET
Huck & Sarah? If the Republicans and the Americans who support them believe these two people offer substance and competence, then the US will be in the same condition as GM, Chrysler and Ford. Maybe it'll be the decline and fall of the US empire. It's happened to others, why not here?
wait a minute   December 5th, 2008 3:42 pm ET
Why can't we limist the presidential election time to one year to six months like many other developed democracy does? Why should we waste so much national resources on constant campaigning? All that money that went for campaigning could have done a lot of good things for our country. We should decrease the individual political donation cap to $1,000.
PJ   December 5th, 2008 3:41 pm ET
Raeford NC – Can you give me one example of Sarah Palin using common sense? I'm really curious as to how people of your mentality envision things. Seriously. I need to find out why she is such a sensation to some people.
Cheeseburger   December 5th, 2008 3:41 pm ET
LOL. I hope she runs in 2012 so we can laugh at her some more. That would basically be a guaranteed 8 years for Obama.
Phil, Ashburn, VA   December 5th, 2008 3:40 pm ET
How can anyone in the right mind think Palin is qualified. She is not bright enough to understand the complex problems.
Jason Hoffman   December 5th, 2008 3:40 pm ET
I love Sarah Palin because she supports the greatest country in the world, ISRAEL! Anyone who demonstrates so much love for Jews and our country is #1 in my book.
Ex-Republican   December 5th, 2008 3:40 pm ET
Well, in light of the fact that the GOP is actually even considering Palin, it confirms my belief that the GOP is headed the way of the do-do bird.
I really wish the neo-con fanatics that have the anti-american practice of mixxing religion with politics would simply move all the way to the right and form their own party...I personally suggest a name of Sadist American Diehards, or SAD for short!
At one point, way back in the past, the republican party actually had integrity and stood for something. The nut jobs who infiltrated it's ranks will be the undoing of it!
Big Worm   December 5th, 2008 3:39 pm ET
I am happy we are already picking the 2012 Republican nominee hopefuls. However, the Republican party has proven they can not run the Nation.
Since Bush took over we are Trillions in Debt, we're involved in a war we did not have to fight, have millions of people out of work, and have been driven further apart from each other. The Republican party is ALL like BUSH and I, like many others, have abandon that party.
Andrea from St Louis   December 5th, 2008 3:34 pm ET
Who in their right mind would ever want her running this country?!!! She has an ethics problem and is totally clueless. Go sit down!
Jozee   December 5th, 2008 3:33 pm ET
Palin's strengths? Everybody knows that Palin has no strengths except her good looks and feigned folksiness. George Bush and Sarah Palin are two of a kind and we have seen where Bush's lack of leadership skills has gotten us.
America needs intelligent, thoughtful people in the W.H. and neither Huckabee nor Palin even comes remotely close.
Nick   December 5th, 2008 3:32 pm ET
And Tom, they also go to "likely voters."
Of course, we probably all have neighbors that asked us this year where to vote. These aren't likely voters, yet they vote for President. Presidential elections bring out the most people. Likely voters go to the obscure board of education election that takes place in the middle of April.
Sherrol in Canada   December 5th, 2008 3:32 pm ET
Unbelievable!!!! You'd think they'd first look at the merits of Mitt Romney or Bobby Jindal.
It amazes me that the GOP has yet to realize, that to win in 2012 or '16 they need to do two things: #1 – Strive to become a party of inclusion and #2 – Find a way to connect with the 18 – 45 yr olds out there.
McCain received 173 electoral votes, they've got alot of work ahead.
The GOP is still rooted in the stone age. America and the world have moved on Republicans, now smarten up!!!
jackjack   December 5th, 2008 3:31 pm ET
Sheesh, if either of them get the nomination, then the GOP is dead for another four years. Neither is a viable candidate nationally and will get whupped by Obama...unless something goes horribly wrong in his first term and Americans end up hating him as much as they do Bush. Exactly whom did they poll for this? A cross sampling of religious right zealots? Please, save the party and vote for a moderate!
Tom   December 5th, 2008 3:28 pm ET
Recipe for disaster. There is a problem these polls don't reflect; the perception of Americans is that the GOP has gone so far to the Right that it isn't functional as a national party. Thus, any poll taken using only registered Republicans, while estimating who might be able to win GOP nomination, isn't practical for estimating who can beat Obama.
Here's an idea for perhaps a better poll: put these candidates in an '08 Swing State Voter poll, against Obama, and with no precondition as to party affiliation of respondents.
mb   December 5th, 2008 3:28 pm ET
Who cares really? It shows exactly how stupid Hucklebee and palin are. It is a good thing that all republicans are not as stupid as they are. If I was a republican, I would make sure that neither of them would be in the primaries. Tax payers are still paying off the debt for palin and her family during the election.
Raeford NC   December 5th, 2008 3:27 pm ET
Kenneth   December 5th, 2008 3:25 pm ET
Instead of the GOP rebuilding itself and moving to the center of the mainstream, they're going off the hate mongering right wing cliff with these clowns Huckabee and Palin.
Oh well, if all else fails, maybe they can start a traveling tent revival complete with snake handlers and book burnings!
Wlm.   December 5th, 2008 3:24 pm ET
Can someone PLEASE make Palin go away?!?!
Biff   December 5th, 2008 3:24 pm ET
Palin will never get out of the starting blocks. guaranteed.
Irma in North Carolina   December 5th, 2008 3:24 pm ET
The republician party is going to loose more of its fold with Sarah running, I know I am going to change from republician to independent. Of course Sarah wont stand a chance against Huckabee. She will follow in Stevens footsteps in alaska. Just to the anchorage daily news, there are a lot of questions how she got her house built.
John   December 5th, 2008 3:24 pm ET
This is the best the party has to offer? WHAT A JOKE !!!!! This is so amusing. AHAHA.
mike   December 5th, 2008 3:23 pm ET
Please let them put Palin up there.
How can I contribute to her campaign? Is it too early?
We have GOT to keep her around!
Robert   December 5th, 2008 3:23 pm ET
No doubt Palin and Huckabee polled EXTREMELY well among Republicans and independents who live under rocks and/or don't have the good sense they were born with.
I really hope Palin does become the Republican standard bearer - it will guarantee the Democrats' hold on the White House for another four years – and longer, if the Repubs insist on nominating bobbleheads.
Jesus   December 5th, 2008 3:23 pm ET
I'll take it.
Matt   December 5th, 2008 3:22 pm ET
I'll say it again: the GOP earns itself a Darwin Award if it nominates these two...particularly if they're on the same ticket. The wonderful irony of it is that these two don't even believe in Darwin...they think an invisible man int he sky magicked up the whole human race just as we are now. You know Moses only got lost in the desert for so long because he forgot his GPS.
Linda, NC   December 5th, 2008 3:22 pm ET
Only if there would still be a Republican party in 2012.
CNN for the last time... i really dont want to hear anything about Palin... atleast for a month. Please... Please... Please... give me a break.
Or atleast provide a filter where we can have an option to ignore the Palin drama.
bob   December 5th, 2008 3:22 pm ET
Republican needs to look for a serious candidate to rebuild their party. THey have to remember that "The first impression Palin gave is what people will remember".
Thanks
Palin is not a viable candidate.
rhoward   December 5th, 2008 3:22 pm ET
Good grief. PE Obama hasn't even been sworn in yet and people are already concerned about 2012. Must be nice not to have anything else to worry about.
Chipster   December 5th, 2008 3:22 pm ET
So, the top 3 GOP contenders are right-wing theological zealots? That's just great! After all, religious fanatics have done such a great job in the Middle East, why not? When will the GOP get a clue that religious fanaticism is not a good substitute for competence and constitutional liberties?
Anonymous   December 5th, 2008 3:21 pm ET
the media blackout continues, they left the only hope for the GOP off the survey.....Ron Paul 2012
AKDC   December 5th, 2008 3:21 pm ET
She is very talented but also very despised by the left. Also, I don't think a woman will be elected or nominated by a party for POTUS until 2030, given all that I've seen during the 2008 election process. the US is very backward and stubbornly blind to it.
2012!
Hello....is anyone home?
We have a disaster on our hands for the next 4 to 8 years
a major change in the way we live our lives is here
BECAUSE of the incompetence, neglect and myopia of Republicans, Bush/Cheney and a Congress that thought it was at Versailles. And Yes Huckabee and Palin are part of the problem....and in no way are part of a solution here.....in the United States of America.
there is no 2012 unless we focus collectively on the right here and right now.
Chelle   December 5th, 2008 3:19 pm ET
It will never happen, If GOD is real
maggiem   December 5th, 2008 3:19 pm ET
We just came off a very long 2 year campaign season--can't we get a break? At least for 6 months? Obama isn't even officially in office yet!
Alabama Voter   December 5th, 2008 3:19 pm ET
Are you kidding me? The Republicans still didn't learn their lesson.
Are you kidding?   December 5th, 2008 3:19 pm ET
Palin – 2012? You must be joking!!!
She isn't qualify to run a bake-sale. She is a nice lady, but she should keep her creationist back-woods beliefs to Alaska – far, far away from the lower 48.
Seriously, those polls must be an April Fools poll.
My cleaning lady has more education and political experience. LOL
Maniac   December 5th, 2008 3:19 pm ET
IF THEY DIDNT WORK IN THE 2008 ELECTION? WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THEY WILL WORK IN THE 2012 ELECTION???
SARAH??? BARACK OBAMA'S DAUGHTERS ARE SMARTER THAN HER!! AND HUCKABEE, WELL HE IS A TRAIN WRECK FROM START TO FINISH
KMAN   December 5th, 2008 3:18 pm ET
The Democrats will be thrilled to see Palin heading the GOP ticket in 2012 since the die-hard Republican base simply isn't large enough to get this turkey elected. The GOP is definitely out of touch with the REAL America if they think Palin is popular beyond red-necks and morons!
YES TO OBAMA   December 5th, 2008 3:18 pm ET
Sorry Palin your loss in this elections means you lost periode ...just try to get it.... u are goneeeeeeeeeeeeee..... G.W.Bush put you republicans out of presidency at least in the next 20 yrs... and Huckabee....never been an option for US anyhow...
Tom in Fl   December 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET
Didn't we just go through 2 years of this stuff? I know.......why wait?? No time like the present to start begging for bucks that people don't have to bet on a horse that won't even leave the stall
Amy   December 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET
For the love of God and all that is holy, will somebody please tell "Govenor Hairdo" that she lost the election and that she now needs to sit down, shut up and make her stupid Moose Stew or whatever???
Mary   December 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET
Oh, jeesh. I am an independent and voted Republican this time but with Huckabee and Palin at the top of the list, I just won't even bother voting. There is definitely something wrong with the Republicans. I guess I had better get use to socialism and having the sock puppet as president.
FromTexas   December 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET
If Obama does half as well as expected, the republicans will need a sacrificial lamb for 2012. Palin will be happy to oblige. She doesn't want to be president – that's a boring, underpaid job. She just wants to run for president. Think of the millions in book sales, speaker fees and talk show appearances.
Mike in Fairfax   December 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET
Anyone care to place any bets on how many ridiculous comments this story generates???
kimthejournalist   December 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET
This would rule. Maybe they should just make their ticket the Bush twins in bikinis and Jared the Subway guy! Ahh, the American dream...
Allen from Pa.   December 5th, 2008 3:16 pm ET
Looks like the republicans and News outlets will do anything to take the glory from Obama.So sad we have to read more about Two has beens then we do about The President Elect.
Barbara   December 5th, 2008 3:16 pm ET
Honestly, as an American muslim, I would be very concerned for my civil liberties if these two ran and won. They are so over the top evangelical that they seem to only see one thing....THEIR religious beliefs. I have no problem with people of other religions, some of the people I hold dearest to my heart are Christians and Jews, but when you have the amount of hatred and racial/religious inciting that went on at some of the Palin rallies, it is concerning and I would actually have been afraid for my safety had I wanted to attend one.
I hope and pray Obama does a great job, and such a good one that he is re-elected in 2012. God willing.
Breaking News   December 5th, 2008 3:16 pm ET
Wow,this is not only amazing, but great news for Democrats.The Republican name plate is as good as the Edsel was for Ford in 1958 and 1959.This must have been Aunt Bees and Opies idea.
Jack in Tampa   December 5th, 2008 3:16 pm ET
Please.....the election is over...................TAKE A VACATION!!!!! Enough of this speculation crap.
Sara Palin is like a new restaurant in town..........everyone frequents it at the beginning and then it becomes ho hum just like all of the rest of them. Time for the Ho Hum!!!
nancy   December 5th, 2008 3:16 pm ET
I really can hardly believe that Palin herself would think that she is anywhere near intelligent enough or "worldly" enough to be President of the United States........now THAT would be a sad, scary day, for sure.
Oh please   December 5th, 2008 3:16 pm ET
Please God, please make Palin the republican nominee. I hope she tries to run every four years.........The repubs will never get into office again......lol
Leah from FL   December 5th, 2008 3:15 pm ET
Randy, San Francisco   December 5th, 2008 3:15 pm ET
Isn't this JUST A BIT EARLY?! Can't we get Obama in office before the next race starts???
demo in PA   December 5th, 2008 3:13 pm ET
palin yes
HUCkabee NO way
Former republican army wife   December 5th, 2008 3:13 pm ET
WOW, I really hope Palin runs. It would be the easiest Dem win in quite some time. If Obama does well, the repubs just might run Palin as a sacrificial lamb. Why run someone with national appeal and national viability , just to be defeated and ruin their chances of 2016? If this story is about both Huckabee, and Palin, how come we have to look at Palin's picture? Why can't it be a photo of Huckabee? I understand Huck doesn't have the same photogenic appeal as Palin does, but I am really getting tired of seeing her.
demo in PA   December 5th, 2008 3:13 pm ET
palin yes
HUCkabee NO way
CV   December 5th, 2008 3:13 pm ET
It seems fairly pointless to think about this. We have no idea what the political/national climate will look like four years from now, so any speculation of who might appeal to the public at that time is basically founded on nothing. No one would have predicted Barack Obama as the next president four years ago.
Revisionists   December 5th, 2008 3:13 pm ET
While they are busy re-writing what just happened in the election (suddenly Huckabee says that Obama didn't get much support from lots of small donars and Palin says that America really wanted the neocon philosophy – yikes!), the can start revisioning themselves.
Both have great potential, but they seem to be more of the same from the GOP. "be afraid" "hate anyone who is not like you" "re-label anything successful as right or center right" "re-label any failure as liberal" "the gov't shouldn't be involved in our lives, except on this long list of conservative objectives like war, and abortion, and saving banks, and allowing companies to anything they want to the American worker."
Yeah... I've had enough of that.
Kim   December 5th, 2008 3:12 pm ET
What? I thought after this campaign Sarah Palin would be a laughing stock. She should be. Who in God's name would vote for her as President? God help us all if this country ever stooped that low.
Matt   December 5th, 2008 3:11 pm ET
HAHAHAHAHA!!! Go ahead. Nominate her. We dare you!!!
TyWebb   December 5th, 2008 3:11 pm ET
Good lord! Thanks, John McCain for bringing Sarah Palin into my life to haunt for another four years.
Doug R.   December 5th, 2008 3:11 pm ET
Come on CNN, this is weak. Our economy is in shambles, George Bush, the current President, is AWOL, no where to be found, and you are telling us about Palin and Huckabee possibly running for President in 2012. That's not even on the radar for most Americans.
RinFL   December 5th, 2008 3:11 pm ET
The RNC continues to beleive this fairy tale.......may they reap what they sow......the seeds of their own discontent.
I am so looking forward to watching those two square off in the primaries. My God is bigger than your God!
AEK   December 5th, 2008 3:11 pm ET
Curious that on the day the final total that President-elect Obama raised for the 2008 campaign is released, Sarah Palin's name comes up again as a possible candidate for the "top spot" on the 2012 Republican ticket. Is it too early to start contributing for Obama 2012?
Sean P. Seattle, WA   December 5th, 2008 3:09 pm ET
I meant IT will show the religious ranatics still control the GOP and Republicans and they still won't have learned their lesson.
Sorry for the typo
republican for life   December 5th, 2008 3:08 pm ET
This sounds like a great ticket Palin/Huckabee
Sean P. Seattle, WA   December 5th, 2008 3:08 pm ET
Palin, or Huckabee to run against OBAMA...HAHAHA SURE and as a Democrat PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL I'll Start Working on my 2012 Obama/Biden VICTORY Signs NOW. HAHAHA the GOP is a JOKE if they run these two Candidates.
I will Show that the Religious Fanatic Right still controls the GOP and that is the same thing THE VOTERS said NO To this Election. When will the Republicans and GOP Learn....More of the Same will not win...EVER AGAIN. UNTIL the GOP LEARNS from their mistakes they'll NEVER BE a serious Party again and Palin and Huckabee to top the list just PROVE THAT VERY THING.
AHHHHH....Reign in the 100 years plus of Democrat rule. Good times are hear again Good Times are here again.
Quick   December 5th, 2008 3:07 pm ET
Uhm, how are either of those candidates expected to win?
They are far too right to attract independents and people in the middle which are needed to win.
If they put either of those people forward, Obama easily has a 2 term presidency.
Justin, ny   December 5th, 2008 3:07 pm ET
"It might come as a surprise to some that Palin does better than Huckabee among GOP men but that Huckabee beats Palin among Republican women,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Palin's strength is also concentrated among older Republicans, but Huckabee may have a slight edge among conservative Republicans"
This doesn't come as a surprise at all – most intelligent women realize what a farce Palin's VP candidacy was and how dangerously unqualified she is, and most republican men don't care if she's qualified because they think she's "hot". None of this is meant to be sexist, its just the way it is
– a liberal guy.
cochise313   December 5th, 2008 3:07 pm ET
obama is probably going to crush anyone of them in 2012. if he does a good job like i think he is it will be a fool's mission to run against him.
MsBingo   December 5th, 2008 3:07 pm ET
I sure hope so. Democrats could not hope for a better pair
Ray Schiel   December 5th, 2008 3:05 pm ET
Are these polls even necessary at this point and if so, why?
Are there other polls that address the country's current needs rather than speculations of something that may or may not happen in the future?
Let's focus on solving today's issues so that whoever is leading us in future can say in a triumphant tone, "Thank you, everyone, for taking the time and energy back then to get us to where we are today."
What's important today? Let's survey and solve that first.
bd   December 5th, 2008 3:05 pm ET
Looks like we didnt learn our lesson. A populist big government conservative and a moron for my party!!!!! I will not support neither! Looks like Obama wins big in 2012.
Bob, San Francisco, CA   December 5th, 2008 3:04 pm ET
Hahahahaha! Unbelievable. Who're they going to nominate for Secretary of State, Jesus? LOL!
Ben   December 5th, 2008 3:04 pm ET
Dear GOP:
Please run Sarah Palin against Obama in 2012. Not only will it have tremendous comedic value, it will ensure the country doesn't get derailed again for at least another 4 years.
Moose Chilli for everyone!
HouseDiva   December 5th, 2008 3:04 pm ET
Huckabee/Palin?
Is it Halloween again?
I can imagine those two mock Christians having the nuclear codes.
Unbelievable!   December 5th, 2008 3:03 pm ET
Could we please hold this historic inauguration before we start talking about Huckabee and that other twit? I mean... REALLY! In four years there will be another bright, shining star for the Republicans and both Huckabee and that dimwhit will be long since forgotten. Let's pray the nincompoot is forgotten, at least. Humm... can't think of anything else to call her, so I'll just end there.
Al, NY NY   December 5th, 2008 3:02 pm ET
Huckelberry AND lipstick Fido. What a pair they would make if they ran together!!! If you thought this year was a landslide, just wait. That would be the most lopsided win in the history of the US. Ghouliani would do better among independents but the thumpers, gay haters, and abortion fanatics would likely stay home. He is after all pro-choice, supports gay rights, cross-dresses, fools around on his wife, and is generally a disgusting, publicity hound
your average girl   December 5th, 2008 3:02 pm ET
once again, let's STOP TALKING ABOUT PALIN and focus on the issues in the present. the only time her name should be in the news again is 2012. It's 2008 right now, so let the past be the past.
Davis   December 5th, 2008 3:01 pm ET
Lord help us all if Palin is going to be next drive of GOP bus. Bush Jr.
obama-mama   December 5th, 2008 3:01 pm ET
Oh that's great. Just add more fuel to the Palin annoying fire. The republicans are a bunch of dimwits if they would really put Palin in power. That's exactly why we are screwed up now, THE RED NECK, TRAILER DWELLING, MISSING TEETH, MARRIED TO YOUR KIN REPUBLICANS......Whew....I feel much better getting that off my chest.
Cynt   December 5th, 2008 3:01 pm ET
Neither is equipped to run this country, but let Palin be the choice, then that way we know for sure Obama will win again in 2012. Obama is going to win again anyway regardless of who runs against him, but she is such and idiot it would be great to see him have a landslide victory. My biggest downside to her running is I have to listen to that horrible, horrible sound of her voice, YUCK!!!. not mention she can't make a complete sentence. Moose killer, if you plan on running you better use this time to get some knowledge. LOL
