Obama speechwriter Favreau learns the perils of Facebook

This photo of Favreau and Clinton appeared on Facebook Friday.

(CNN) - Jon Favreau, future White House director of speechwriting, has so far been at a loss for words over Facebook pictures of him at a recent party.

Pictures of Favreau, 27, at a recent party appeared on Facebook Friday. In one of the photos, Favreau, who served as President-elect Barack Obama’s chief speechwriter during the campaign season, was dancing with a life-sized cardboard cut-out of future secretary of state Hillary Clinton. In a second photo, a friend was offering the cutout a bottle of beer while Favreau stood beside the likeness with his hand on the cardboard New York senator’s chest.

The picture was reportedly up for a scant two hours or so before Favreau removed it, along with every other picture of himself beyond his profile photo - but there’s no getting the Facebook genie back in the bottle.

Favreau wasn’t talking to reporters about the incident, but transition officials said he had offered an apology to Clinton.

The Clinton camp reaction? "Sen. Clinton is pleased to learn of Jon's obvious interest in the State Department, and is currently reviewing his application," Clinton aide Philippe Reines told the Washington Post.

Really people?? How much do you want to dull down a persons sense of humor and personal opinions before they are deemed "mature and respectful?" Lighten up people and perhaps focus your anger on something that matters! I mean really... THINK about it and cut this guy a break.

Although it isn't like he committed a serious offense, but why did he have to take that picture? I question his self-control about being clever rather than preparing for an important job. The fact that he is wearing a shirt that says "Obama Staff" is just silly.

As for the dummy (conrad) who said Hillary "deserves a boob honkin'", I'd like to see someone say that about your mother every time she said something mean and nasty.

Hahaha, it is funny, but obviously his application is about to be denied. Unless Clinton is willing to make light of it as it just being a guy having fun at a party with a camera. No harm, but it's pretty indecent.

Mr. Favreau has no place in this new government. Animal House, yes, but not the White House.

Obama needs to make an immediate change we can believe in - as in, FIRE Mr. Favreau - if we are to believe his administration is really going to be about change from the old ways of doing business in DC. And this guy's supposed to craft the language that is supposed to inspire the public, bring people together, and manage public perceptions? He just doesn't get it.

What part of 'the world is watching us' does he not understand? Go quickly , Mr. Favreau, and take your cardboard cut-out with you.

These are the 'new' young Professionals attitudes towards their jobs, that require honor, ethics and a Change in government??? I do not believe that the only people Administrations can get are the very young and unwise 'kids' for their important positions! The reason for wanting these jokers not yet wise blindly do their bidding without real thought.... you, know, kinda like get em' young and bring em' up Your way??? We do not have true leadership, we have children in positions that are 'dictated' to them.

  8. Dolly,

    Well, who is surprised??

Obama is creating jobs, one for Carolyn Kennedy and of course welfare for the wealthy, expecting taxpayers to pay off Hilary Clinton's debt.

Everyone who voted him in will be getting exactly what they deserve howeve the rest of us have to go along.

This is an absolute disgrace and extremely disturbing. Highest level of standards should be maintained along with a zero tolerance policy. Mr Favreau is not mature enough to be given any respectful position in the future administration. This calls for President-elect Obama to step-up and fire him from the speech writer position.

I love the headline. The kid is smart/experienced enough to put the words in the mouth of the future leader of our country but not quite sharp enough to have a handle on Facebook. Poor kid.

He of all people should have known better than to be photographed groping the future secretary of state. Any other person would not matter because its a joke, etc, whatever. BUT, once you take such a high profile job and in the White House, you need to act accordingly and not be so stupid. and he is not a kid.

Glad the Clintons see this as funny.

Favreau will learn a lesson, in Washington everything is looked at whether you're 27 or 67 and in high office. People are so freakin' uptight in this town, they need to loosen up!

I am tired of the age bashing. I am 29 years old and I do not think that youth automatically defines itself as incompetence. Isn't Bush in his 60s? Can someone explain to me what is the point of going to college at 18 or even completing a graduate degree in your 20s if you are going to be considered a child and should not be offered a decent job? I don't think 27 is the reason NOT to hire the man as a speechwriter. I would also like to point out that people of all ages post things that may be considered inappropriate on Facebook or Myspace. Once again, people's comments on CNN are reduced back to age, race, or gender bias. What a shocker.

I bet Hillary and Bill both think it's hilarious!

    C'mon everybody! Lighten up!

Oh come one. All you people saying that he needs to be fired...lighten up! This is funny and as you can see from the reaction from the Clinton camp, they get a kick out of it too. What he did was wrong...yes. But Clinton responded perfectly and you can see that she's not really concerned.

Think about it. Instead of laughing AT those who lead us for the next 4 years like we have done for the last 8, what if the government had a sense of humor and we can laugh with them. Maybe this country needs to loosen up a little! Lord knows I could use a break after the last decade.

This person is too immature to be responsible for such a high end job. If this picture was from college, I would understand. However, he should know better than this at 27 years old. As a woman, I am offended by this behavior. He is too young and immature for this job. I thought Obama was being selective. This appears to be his first staffing mistake.

i agree with the previous notes. Obama is hiring 27 year old punks but won't give a chance to Hispanics and Asians. Quickly getting dissapointed with his choices.

  22. Not Perfect Either!

OK – Hasn't EVERYBODY done something juvenile like this at some point? And if you haven't, you're so boring that NOBODY would want to hire you.

Do you really imagine that Hillary, or the Moose Hunter, or our new First Lady, have NO SENSE OF HUMOR? The guy meant no harm.....he was goofing around at a party..

Lighten up and go have a beer.

  23. This is no big deal, leave the guy alone

    What's the big deal.
    All in good fun.
Lighten up, America. Hillary obviously has a good sense of humor about it.
    Chill out, folks.

Oh my goodness who hasn't been young before? The problem with this generation is they like to hang themselves by putting there stupidy over the internet for the world to see. It is a tough lesson to learn at 27.

Dont fire him Obama! But he does need to be reprimanded. I have a sister that's 28 and they can live on another planet.

If Obama doesn't fire this guy, it will be seen as condoning this behavior.
I can't believe all of the "he is only 27"! The guy is writing speeches representing America, and has just been promoted to a high level appt. in the administration. You all can't have it both ways, you can't say he is mature enough to hold a position like he has, but not mature enough to act like it.
