Gore is meeting with Obama Tuesday.

(CNN) – Former Vice President Al Gore is set to meet with President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday, a move that's likely to unleash a wave of speculation that the incoming president is eyeing Gore for a slot in his administration.

According to the Obama transition office, the meeting will focus on issues relating to energy and climate change, and how the new administration's environmental policies can spur job creation.

Democratic officials have said Obama is not looking to tap Gore for a Cabinet-level post or any other position in the administration.

A Gore appointment would almost certainly be greeted with celebration from members of party's liberal wing, many of whom are still angered he lost the White House in 2000 despite wining the popular vote.

Gore has also rocketed to stardom in the years since his failed presidential bid, winning a Nobel Peace Prize last year for his work to raise awareness on the dangers of global warming. The former vice president also was involved in making a documentary on climate change, "An Inconvenient Truth," which won two Oscars in 2007.

But Gore, who has made millions in the private sector since his days at the White House during stints on corporate boards - including Apple Inc. - and partnerships at venture capital firms, has suggested he has little interest in returning to government. A spokesman for Gore flatly said last week the former vice president has no interest in serving the Obama administration.

Nonetheless, Gore's high profile visit to Chicago is raising eyebrows, even among some of Gore's close advisers.

"The Gore trip is for more than just a chat," a close friend of Gore told CNN's John King. "He wouldn't burn that much carbon flying to Chicago just to talk."

Cap N Trade commodotizes green house gas production. Paying for it removes the guilt of producing it which will actually create more.
Sort of the same way Gore removes the guilt of the tons of exaust fumes produced buy his private jet using Carbon offsets – Get it now?

@ Gary from the beginning: I am a geologist as well. Yes, there is naturally occurring global warming. However, one must look at the rate at which it is occurring compared to previous events. If one does compare this rate at which events are occurring and past "ice ages", one would be able to notice that the rates are significantly so. That means there must be another contributing factor... which points to all of the harmful ozone depleting, smog producing, etc. that are happening RIght Now!

To LIP:

Many climate scientists state that they are put under enormous pressure to distort or hide any scientific results which suggest that human activity is to blame for global warming. A survey of climate scientists which was reported to the US House Oversight and Government Reform Committee noted that "Nearly half of all respondents perceived or personally experienced pressure to eliminate the words 'climate change', 'global warming' or other similar terms from a variety of communications." These scientists were pressured to tailor their reports on global warming to fit the Bush administration's climate change scepticism. In some cases, this occurred at the request of a former oil-industry lobbyist.

When the scientist is being funded by EXXON Mobil, they will sway results to adhere to the person that is funding the research. Most scientists you are referring to have since changed their stance on global warming and are supporting man made concerns due to fossil fuels. It's time to do some reading on the subject. Some of the 400 scientists tried to get their names off of the list and were told that they couldn't take them off. Most in the scientific community support the idea of global warming due to man-made causes.

PS. Copernicus also was disputed for his ideas when he expressed them. Scientists at that time were sure that the world was flat. Just an FYI regarding scientific research so that we don't all follow like blind sheep.

If I had the power to do so I would do two things to help save the planet. #1 Raise EPA to cabinet position #2 Make Al Gore the first Secretary of the Environment.

I hope Obama would consider such a move.

Godluvr   December 8th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

And the plot thickens! It would be so wonderful if he (Gore) accepts a spot in this administration of a lifetime! He was cheated so terribly in his run for the presidency. This would somehow seem like poetic justice; like the selection of Gen. Shinseki, who was disrespected by the Bush administration for daring to go against the mob.

People wanted change. They are getting change. PE Obama and VPE Biden are trying to change the way Washington works. I think the only people who have a problem with it are people who are used to "the old ways", as indicated by the title of this ticker: "Obama, Gore meeting raises eyebrows". Remember, think out of the box. That's what the transition team is doing.

Victoria   December 8th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

Pat   December 8th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Democratic officials have said Obama is not looking to tap Gore for a Cabinet-level post or any other position in the administration.
----------------

GOOD for Obama!

Al Gore continues to "peddle" his global warming initiative - sort of a "consolation prize" for losing the presidency?.

Al Gore - you LOST - "please try to get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

That's what all the Liberal bloggers are saying about THEIR conservaive opposition!!!!!!!!

Victoria   December 8th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Tell me why it's raising eyebrows. Al Gore is a respectable, intelligent man. Obama is talking with a lot of people these days, and if he wants to talk to Al Gore, he will. And if Gore doesn't want to return to politics, he won't. It's that simple. And I'm sick of the word "liberal" being treated as something that someone should be ashamed of. I'm perfectly proud of my so-called "liberal" thinking, and I won't change it no matter how unpopular it becomes. I think that America needs to grow up and realize that- here's a shocker- there are people out there with different opinions than you! Get over it.

Billy Jo, Tenn.   December 8th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

Gore's home state of Tennessee (my state) did not vote for him and we knew him best.

Why does Obama want him????

Tom in Delaware   December 8th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

The real 'Inconvenient Truth' is that Gore lost the 2000 election fair and square.

My favorite Liberal whine is the one where they say that Bush stole the election in Florida.

What poetic justice we saw this year in the Democratic primaries when Barack Obama was the one who actually stole Florida's votes.

That's the icing on the cake.

The cherry on top is when these same nimrods preach to Republicans to 'get over it' now that Obama is President-Elect.

If you only had any idea how childishly stupid you sound....but 1 in 5 of you has a character disorder, so what are the chances of that?!?

I could not be more thrilled with Mr Obama. He is showing great wisdom and is keeping his commitments in every area. I have every reason to believe that he will be a truly great president. I would be thrilled beyond words if Al Gore became his energy secretary or the director of the EPA or any other environmental post that requires his 30 plus years of study, wisdom and commitment to the environment. He is respected throughout the world. The United States will regain it's standing in the world with all those within the Obama administration. I would be surprised if Mr Gore leaves his many roles within the private sector to return to Washington, but I can still dream.

J.D.   December 8th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

Gore, you may have made millions in the past few years, but now YOU ARE CALLED BACK TO DUTY. Do what you need to do the help this country and this world. In a hundred years, nobody will look back in awe for how muchh money you made. They WILL look back if you gave that up to stand for your principles.

diane08   December 8th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

YES!! Head of the EPA (I hope). Perfect fit.

I understand why Gore has lost the desire to work in government, but I would seriously question his commitment to the environment if he turns down this position.
If the environment is truly his calling, then this would be the best position for him to be in. It would be next to impossible to make substantial gains in environmental protection without working with our government as well as govt's around the world.

Ha, have to correct my own typos!

To DE who said that Gore had a lower GPA than Bush at Harvard:

What were their respective GPAs? Would you care to enlighten us? Can you also tell me what they were studying? That is relevant to this discussion because a course load heavy on the sciences such as biology and physics, plus math, etc., might be more difficult than say a course heavy on literature.

Also, GPA alone is not an indication of intelligence. It must be considered along with intellectual curiosity, the tendency to continue to learn long after your formal education has ended. What you do and learn and read affects a person's intelligence as they grow. Trust me, I had a pretty dismal GPA at a top tier university, yet my IQ is 142 and I have since achieved much higher scores in graduate school. I was more interested in Greek life than scholarship! Anyway, please provide further information so that I may decide, based on all of the facts, which man is more intelligent.

The fact that he parlayed an election that was stolen from him into a Nobel Prize, or the fact that more and more of what he has been saying for the last 8 years is becoming demonstrable fact? Whatever you may think of his politics here in the US, the world scientific community thought enough of him, and the world thinks enough of him that he has garnered acclaim the world round. He is considered by the world scientific community as one of the spokespersons for global climate shifts and the part of human technology in that shift. As such, he is an excellent resource for President Elect Obama to tap, especially on how the rest of the world sees us on the topic. Like it or not, the rest of the world counts, too....

Gene   December 8th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Always a good idea to meet up with past leaders and learn from their experience. And.. as predicted.. another idiot here screaming where's the change? Change is actually listening to all sides... taking advantage of the experiences of past leaders and new ideas and combining them.

Kevin in Ohio.. I'm sure you want real change. I'm sure your idea of change would be to learn from Joe the Plumber or Jorge the Fry Cook, or Jack the dishwasher. I'm sure you'd rather him work with only people who have never set foot in washington and people who know nothing about politics. I personally prefer he consults with people who know the ropes.

As long Gore keeps Manbearpig out of the conversation.. I'm sure it'll be a good one :)

LIP   December 8th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

A consortium of 400 scientists said that Gore was wrong and that the Earth is basically doing what it did before we arrived on the scene. Remember that humans have only been here for roughly 4 million years, the Earth is 4 billion years old and we have only been messing with the climate for about the last 100 years or less. Now that you have it in perspective, tell me why we need Al Gore spreading rumors about the end of the world.

Ravi   December 8th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

It's hypocritical for Al Gore to say he's pro-environment, while flying around in a private gas guzzling jet. If the CEOs of the Detroit automakers can drive hundreds of miles in a hybrid car, Gore should do the same.

That said, Barack continues to prove to us everyday that he is going to make an excellent president! Can't wait 'till 1/20/09. Change is coming!

The same is true with College in most of the first rate country you just have to go on your own accord!

You are the man Obamania. These are the times we should waste if we are really serious about solving our global issues as of this 21st century way of doing things.I wish you the best coffee and breakfast together with the former vice-president very soon and hopefully the best will come from your discussing. What a smart gift of president-elect we got.

(Vice) President Gore's with the President-Elect should be a good one. I agree with the previous comment; what a better world this would be had we been talking about a meeting between out-going President Gore and President-elect Obama.

We're saved! The troops out of Iraq in 16 months, tax increases on anyone making over $250,000, windfall profit taxes on oil companies (I sure hope the incoming administration doesn't back down on each and every one of these promises)...and NOW perfectly clean air. How about a chicken in every pot? Or maybe a polar bear?

ChicagoSuz   December 8th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Sounds like Barack & Joe are gonna tag team him... get him to agree to be part of the Administration, at least on a limited advisory basis.

Mark, B'ham., Al.   December 8th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

The guys that think the enviroment is more important than the economy are getting together. How many of you have $35,000.00 to put solar on your house? How many of you have $10,000.00 to convert your car to natural gas or to own an electric car to commute around town and a gas powered car for long trips so you don't have to spend the night at a hotel every few hundred miles to recharge the battery. From my experience at work just a couple of days of cloudy weather and the batteries from the solar power system for instrumentation are dead and our technicians are there hooking up gas powered generators. After 40 years we are no where near the ability of being renewable energy powered and we won't be after 150 billion dollars over the next 10 years unless they carbon tax us so we do not drive or heat and cool our homes like they do in Europe.

Gabriel   December 8th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Despite any fallacies that former Vice President Gore may have, he and his organization have found a way to tell the world of the dangers of global warming in a way that seems to make a difference. He has earned respect for these efforts across many parts of the globe and from both sides of the political isle; although not universal support. I would hope that he can play at least an advisory role when it comes to the environment in President Obama’s Administration. Head of the EPA would be nice, but I think he needs to be more visible. Such as an Environmental and New Energy Development Tsar. Sorry to use the tsar cliché, but you know what I mean.

gloria from yorba linda   December 8th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

I think a lot of people felt that President Bush was not the real winner of the original election, however, he had 8 years, 6 of which were with a rubber stamp Republican congress to prove that he was a real leader and failed miserably at every turm. If Karl Rove thinks that he can spin away one of the worst presidencies in the history of this great nation by "naming names" he is sadly mistaken. The legacy of the failed and unjustifiable Iraq war, one of the greatest deficits in our history plus the total mismanagement of our economy and the abolition or underfunding of the regulations and regulatory agencies that were supposed to keep our financial system safe will be the hallmarks of this administration that Karl Rove help architec.
Won't miss any of them.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   December 8th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Environment is one of Gores academic expertise, this is not something he "winged it" to bring him World attention. Obama is picking people who didn't get where they are by "winging it", the Republicans should learn a lot from Obama.

Just another brick out of Clinton's house, when's it gonna stop? This guy could care less about the enviroment. If Mr. Gore was truly concerned, his home in Tennessee would have had every imaginable energy savings technology installed outside, and inside! Just as a reminder ,I recall when some people actually looked into his sincerity about doing everything he said to reducing green-house gases, etc. there wasn't any,nut-in, period! Kevin of Ohio, get over the right vs left bs okay, and yes Al Gore is blast from the past which by the way the economy did very well under Clinton/Gore administration. This meeting is about the enviorment issues not the political issues. With Bush out of the picture is a change you right-wing crazy.

Would someone please tell Kevin in Ohio that global warming is real? I know that information is not made available on Fox News. Reality does not exist for Right wingnuts, as they still think there were WMD's in Iraq even though our fearless leader ("W") has admitted there were none in his interview this past week.

Joe Kent Island, MD   December 8th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Great to hear that Obama and Gore are meeting. I hope that Gore will be offered a position either within the EPA which has been a push over for GWB or the Department of Energy. I've both been to Al Gore's lectures, and met him personally. I can truly say that he is an intelligent man who has ideas and a love for country that goes beyond money and politics.

Lets make energy production America's next milk and honey, as electronics, automobiles, and computers once were.

Dreamer   December 8th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Al Gore or Hillary Clinton or Colin Powell would have been a better president or commander-in-chief in a dangerous world, more qualified and more experienced with proven records and past government achievements. Maybe Michelle Robinson Obama will follow Hillary Clinton's footsteps and become the first woman president. Barack Obama is in the eyes of the public, and models smoking for others, his own children for example. If we common citizens have any addiction or problems, we only affect ourselves, family and closed society, but not the world at large. The kids are watching and learning the bad habit from the president, their hero. He told Brokaw he had quit smoking, only to change his rheoric seconds later, as having been unsuccessful, and falling off the wagon. The kids are watching and learning... We all better learn to smile like Barack Obama, it works all the time.

Steve   December 8th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Kevin in Ohio is out to lunch. Al may be part of the past Clinton administration, but his award winning efforts to draw attention to climate change came after that. Thanks to BushCo, NOTHING has changed since and things have gotten worse, policy wise. So yes, any ideas or efforts that Gore could contribute to the Obama administration will in fact be WELCOME change.

Charles Atlanta   December 8th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

That will be interesting if Gore is leading the EPA.

Kevin in OH> Give it up. A SMART president confers w. people who are well-versed on a particular subject, regardless of whether or not the person has been in office before. So, yes, this IS a change. If you don't think the way B. is doing things is different from the way things have been done (or, rather, haven't been done!) during the past 8 years, I don't know where you've been.
Oh, and Al is hardly a "crazy".

Good, Al Gore should take more of an Active Role of following through with solutions to the Climate Problem!! Its a good way of not only talking about the problem but actually doing something about the problem!!

I LIke the way Obama is picking up the phone an reaching out to anybody who has more insight on any particular issue!! By calling and speaking to Republicans and Democrats alike and putting them on the same page!! Either your part of the Solution or part of the Problem!!! Neo-Cons please take note ,( I know you are a dying breed)!!!!!

Vicki5   December 8th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

It wouldn't make much sense for Obama to not utilize the strengths of Gore. For those of you who are still trying the line "where's the change", give it up already. Do you not realize how pathetically stupid you sound. Change is not ignoring anyone who has served in public office before – for crying out loud.

Obama4me   December 8th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

As far as the new Jeremiah Wright attack ad that is airing after the election...the result would have been the same. The GOP on the Right doesn't seem to "get it", no one cares about scare tactics and mud slinging when you are losing your house, job and lifestyle. This is about survival and may the person with the superior intelligence, temperment and plan win...hence PRESIDENT OBAMA. Thank you very much.

Ms. B in California   December 8th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

The sad thing is that American businesses will soon be at a huge disadvantage because of the liberals believe that the world is choking from survival if we don't punish businesses soon and only US businesses soon with a huge tax increase better known as Cap and Trade. It will ruin any chance a business that burns carbon will survive in a world marketplace where other countries will be so thankful they will have fewer competitors once the US businesses begin to fail.

Thank you Liberals for Cap and Trade we love the fresh air of nobody working.

We are about to go into the mother of all Depressions if Baracka and the Liberals ruin Main Street and Wall Street's economy with their excessive taxes and excessive regulations ala the way the alarmist like Gore want.

Even if you dismiss global warming entirely, there remain very serious pragmatic motives for reducing our dependence on oil as an urgent strategic priority.

We need to gradually raise import tariffs on oil and taxes on gasoline, to both motivate people to reduce their oil consumption and to fund alternatives. If we don't, it's just a matter of time until we're looking at $5/gallon gas again.

Fool me once,...

President elect-Obama is putting the right people in the right places. I'm not saying that he's going to pick Gore as the energy secretary, but i'm sure the former VP will give him great insight on who a good contender will be for the position. A little off topic, but we need to swear in President-elect Obama now. The markets are responding to his message on the economy. Whenever he gives a speech on the economy or where this country needs to be heading, markets seem to respond.

I am a professional geologist, and have been for 35 years. The fact that Al Gore is considered an expert on climate changes and global warming makes me want to vomit. Global warming is occurring, for natural reasons, the same as it has in between Ice Ages for the last million years. However, professors of geology, who are quite aware of this, are afraid to say the truth, because they will lose their grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Global Warming is the latest buzz word, and is one of the biggest farces ever put over on a naive public.
