Streisand has long been a critic of the president.
Streisand has long been a critic of the president.

(CNN) - Barbara Streisand is among the Democratic Party's leading Hollywood supporters and has charged President Bush stole the 2000 and 2004 elections, but all that seemed like water under the bridge Sunday when the famed entertainer appeared at the White House.

Streisand, who was honored at the Kennedy Center Sunday evening for her legendary career, got a kiss on the cheek from the president at the White House shortly before the event kicked off. Streisand did give the president a kiss back.

The event was so surreal it was played on video for attendees of the Kennedy Center honors later in the evening.

"Art transcends politics this weekend," Streisand said of her venture to the Bush White House, according to the Associated Press.

Though Streisand, who has called for Bush's impeachment, said it would be "lovely" if she instead received the award under President-elect Barack Obama.

I think Babs should have considered it improper to recieve anything for the guy she's been railing about.

After all, if GWB hands you an award of ANY kind, whatever it was for is automaticly diminished, and soiled.

J. O'Heir   December 8th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Bush should get a Tetanus injection

Bill   December 8th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Well... the first half of George's weekend was spent at the Army-Navy game in Philly. A sellout crowd (70,000) was on hand. I was there and I didn't hear a single boo. All things considered he probably thought he'd rather be in Philly.

Matt, Chico, CA   December 8th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Well thank GOD CNN was here to let us know

Christy   December 8th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

I hope she used bleach.

Lance Hill   December 8th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Barbara kissing the President! What a hypocrite.

Jon Stewart (but not THAT one)   December 8th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

I hope she had her shots.

PS to RJN... You ask what SHE has done????!!!!

Pat Philip   December 8th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

And then she said, "don't tell me just to sit and putter, life's candy and the sun's a bowl of butter....don't rain on my parade!"

Thomas   December 8th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Folks don't get spun up over this. It is just a social convention. It does not mean that bush likes babs or that babs likes bush. It is just something that is done at these type of ceremonies.

Double standard? of course it is. many of our social customs are double standards... what about it?

Angie-OHIO   December 8th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Striesand is being honored along with several others at the Kennedy center. The president always honors these individals. It is a nonpartisan affair. dumb dumb bush has done it for the last 8 years. I'm so glad it will be his last.

Matt   December 8th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

@ Aaron

I dunno, she sort of makes me want to throw up a little in my mouth as well, but CNN wouldn't post it the first time I tried to say that because everyone seems to worship the Babbling Babs. Never liked her myself though.

David   December 8th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

And...? There are more important issues to be discussed and CNN chose this?

Godluvr   December 8th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Let by gones be bygones, and just smile for a moment! She's showing she is bigger than the Republicans!

Milhouse van Houten   December 8th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Secretary of Entertainment.

Jaime Mesa,AZ   December 8th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

I agree with Joe:
EEEWWW, I would also much rather be kissed by our President elect. Still the idea and the picture seem very surreal. It's kind of like matter meets anti-matter, I almost would expect them to both go up in smoke!

bob   December 8th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Not worth a comment.

Minnesotan   December 8th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Barbie's whoring herself out again. She hasn't done anything in years, is one of the worst primadonnas in show business and a nasty person. But she'll gladly kiss Little Bush just to get some attention. She needs to go far away with Karl Rove and Sarah Palin and never be heard from again.

AJ   December 8th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

They are both revolting human beings.

TerryDo   December 8th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Barbara Streisand is among the Democratic Party's leading Hollywood supporters and has charged President Bush stole the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Is that why the DNC and the RBC and Streisand and her ilk felt justified in stealing the primary elections from Senator H.R. Clinton?

Jackie in Dallas   December 8th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Let's hope she is up on her tetanus shots! What kills ME is that he is retiring to within 10 miles of me. YUCK. Please, Georgie, go home to Crawford and leave Dallas alone!

Darvin   December 8th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Barbra....Next time .Just say no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mickie   December 8th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Wow, sounds like some people have as low or lower an opinion of Steisand as they do of Bush. All I can say is that at least whatever Steisand has done has not cost our Country our honor as well as our stability. The only reason he was not impeached was because people did not want to see Cheney in the Oval Office either.

William of Iowa   December 8th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

It was a polite and gracious act by both. Differing opinions, however expressed, do not stand between citizens of the United States when sharing polite company and are not tolerated in the People's house.

BeauMan   December 8th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

I know many on this site do not like Pres. Bush...but in my opinion, this is the true ruination of his character and decision making. Say it isn't so, Mr. President!!

Will 18E   December 8th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Hey LIP, Barbara was at the Kennedy Center and being honnored, not the White House.

Bush had no reason to be there, other than he could.

and we care about this, why?

Patty in the CA mountains   December 8th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

My educated guess is that the only reason Bush agreed to honor Ms Streisand now is because he knows she would rather have received it under Mr Obama and ANYTHING to vex her!!! What an adult we are dealing with here.....and contrary to the comments of some, her statements regarding impeachment and theft are shared by most of America at this point and there are many of us out here that wish he would be tried for crimes against the country....bet she washed her check in a hurry....

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   December 8th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

La Streisand should have refused the award (like she needs more awards?) rather than recognize war criminal bush on any sort of level. I wouldn't waste spit on him.

Jacqueline   December 8th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

You know it fires her crusty loins to get a kiss from a man like Dubya. He's the kind of white-collar, blue-blood, bad boy she has wanted all her life, but could never get. She can only attract washed-up, no-talent 3rd and 4th-rate show-biz trash like Brolin, or Hillary's sloppy seconds. She had a voice, I'll give her that. But zero talent as an actress, or director, zero intellect, and she's been a horrible, horrible mother. She did crank out an adrorable son though.

Paul   December 8th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

"Ewwww!" – Brian G, Sugar Land, TX

Yeah, can you imagine having to kiss Striesand?

Chuck   December 8th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

You know folks we are all just people. I admire both of them for showing America that despite extremely different positions and opinions, that in the bigger picture we are all the same. If only we could convince the religious right that this is the case. The hatred would definitely subside. Kudos to both of them.

Emit R Detsaw   December 8th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

JL   December 8th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Wasn't it Streisand who was at that Obama fundraiser that the republican bloggers used to call him an elitist? Where are all those people when it comes to Bush kissing her? Double standard?

Sherrol   December 8th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

I wonder what Morgan Freeman said to Bush that made the both of them laugh so much!?

Steve from Wisconsin   December 8th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Why do people care about Streisand or any other Hollywood types? I know they are entitled to their opinions, just like any other U.S. citizen, but every election cycle, we're bombarded with their political views, as if they have some special knowledge, or as if we should care. I'm a conservative, so I'm probably on this one, but if these actors and other performers were Republicans, this would be bug me just as much. Please focus on their "art" and stop covering them and their political views, O.K.?

BreAnna - Military Brat   December 8th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

I thought that her name was Barbra Streisand.
Anyway, it's nice to see that those two people can still be adults after Ms. Streisand's obvious contempt for President Bush in the past.

Aaron   December 8th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

God forbid the wacko left be nice to anyone with a divergent view. Pres-elect Obama's early moves looks so conservative Barbara may have reservations about showing him any respect soon. The frenzied left I'm sure will keep corks on the molotov cocktails for the honeymoon.

Tomkatinseattle   December 8th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Hopefully she was wearing poisonous lipstick...

John -- White Plains, NY   December 8th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

If I recall correctly, the Kennedy Center awarded her the Honors during a Republican Administration. Regardless of her politics, the Honors were long overdue and exceedingly well deserved.

Why are we not hearing any comments about the drug induced frenzied actions of Daltry, Townsend or the actions of Jones, which got him in hot water many years ago? Art is art, politics is politics....Get over it people....

Anne   December 8th, 2008 11:54 am ET

I think it's the ultimate "ha ha" on Babs – hopefully thought up by the not-so-stupid Bush. This is what she deserves – NOT receiving the award from the Obama administration. If she didn't like it, then why did she accept it? EGO – that's why.

Tim   December 8th, 2008 11:53 am ET

This is Bush's way of pocking her in the eye. Good for him.

Jason   December 8th, 2008 11:52 am ET

Who cares what this overrated bimbo thinks anyway . . . as ugly as she is, she should be glad anyone would kiss that face. Only fans she has are older gay men.

They should take her awards away since she is so ungrateful and kick her butt out to the street where she belongs.

I dont like Bush either but I could care less what some vapid supersized ego star thinks about anything. She is wasted space . . . she hasnt done anything for this country herself.

So, she slams Bush every chance she gets, except at award time. Streisand is a has-been. This award may revive a dead career, probably not, but hey, you never know. Of course she would put aside politics for it. What would you expect her to do? Stand by her principles? I think not!

Billy D Providence, RI   December 8th, 2008 11:37 am ET

You people need to learn to respect to office of president, regardless of how you feel about the person in it.

Only time will really tell what affects Bush had on our nation. I never voted for him, but come on. Opinions polls tracking the whining and rants of a nation of selfish imbeciles shouldn't deter a statesman (or woman) just doing the job they were elected to do the best they know how. And there's a nation of people now free from a dictator's terror and torture who might think differently about Bush than you do.

Grow up and show some respect.

President Bush may have struggled in areas of his presidency, but he has always been a gracious person and gracious host. Hopefully some of the left wingers can learn that lesson.

For those that think that Barbra has not done anything for this country because she is a democrat, what have you the republican done? Bob   December 8th, 2008 11:14 am ET

Streisand is a loser. Although she has a good voice. Her politics are plain stupid. Thank you George Bush for keeping this country safe since 9/11 and fighting back HARD in the war on terror. Michael M. Noonan   December 8th, 2008 11:13 am ET

Barbara Streisand: one of the most moronic voices of the Hollywood left. "Art transcends politics," she says. Who would call what she does (singing every other song as if it were a parade anthem) ART? Just another obtuse celebrity. Shut up and sing! Oh, sorry, it's "Barbra."

Jaime   December 8th, 2008 11:12 am ET

What a noble thing for our President to do!! The bigger question is, "why is Barbara Streisand getting any kind of award?" Her singing is no better than her politics!

Streisand is an avid democrat and far to the left. Bush is all GOP and way over on the right. He has also been a horrible president. This kiss was respectful from both parties. She is probably happy as hell the tenure of this dork is near it's end.

RU Kidding Me?   December 8th, 2008 10:57 am ET

I like Babs, but sometimes she is way to arrogant. It is a Kennedy Center Honor. She should be grateful that she is receiving one, regardless who the President might be. Why doesn't she just refuse the honor and see if the committee will even vote for her again next year? Geez...get over yourself!

Wendell   December 8th, 2008 10:56 am ET

LIP   December 8th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Striesand should be honored, but isn't and it's funny what some people will do for attention. I think what Bush did is what you call turning the other cheek. After making ridiculous statements about President Bush, such as impeachment and theft of the office and after her husbands son stars in a sappy movie about Bush, then she attends a function at the White House and smiles as if nothing has happened. Give me a break...they should have thrown her out on her nose.

Hopefully everyone is civil about this, it is an honor to receive an award from your goivernment for your achievments; even if the President is not one you are fond of. this is the way our democracy works and I for one I'm thankful for it.

Lynn in NM   December 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Babs kissed a Republican???? Isn't this the same person that said she hadn't been able to perform until Clinton was inaugurated??? Did you need the publicity Babs?

Bush Legacy-prison bound for all!   December 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Kiss of a killer!!! Interesting!!!

N. S. Huntsville, Al   December 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

NOW NOW BARBARA BE NICE! LOL

sunshine   December 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

just shows streisand is a hypocrite.

Mary   December 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

She should keep her mouth shut about politics.

She obviously thinks her award is more important than her politics

Mi13   December 8th, 2008 10:30 am ET

She's like butter...
I think it's possible to disagree with someones politics, and still like, or even love the person, I have many friends from the "other" party, big deal.

Andy J, Upstate NY   December 8th, 2008 10:29 am ET

blah blah blah

Gosh, i think i actually like Bush more than Barb

BS not Maverick   December 8th, 2008 10:27 am ET

The kiss of goodby!

Gag me with a spoon! LOL

How would Rice know about being a good SOS she never was anygood at either SOS or NSA. She is another of Bushes's people who should be in jail.

lf   December 8th, 2008 10:21 am ET

Let Barbara sing and the President ride off into the sunset to let history be the best judge of his 8 years in office. People were so displeased with Truman in 1952, and now history give him great marks.

J Willaimson   December 8th, 2008 10:16 am ET

Barbra met John Kennedy while he was President (this while her career was just starting to take-off). It's amazing to think about how many presidents have come and gone since then. Congratulations to Miss Streisand and I wish her many more years of what she does best – singing better than anybody else!

pat huntington ny   December 8th, 2008 10:15 am ET

betcha she secreted herself right to the bathroom to wash Bush's slime off her cheek and wash her mouth out with listerine!

A kiss is just a kiss   December 8th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Could this be the beginning of a beautiful relationship?

demit   December 8th, 2008 10:13 am ET

With a snot like there's no wonder Barbara's head turns WAY left...

Bill   December 8th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Not that I am a fan of President Bush, but I would rather kiss Bush's wife than kiss Barbara Streisand. I have also been a democrat for the past 50 years and recently voted for Barrack. I honor Barbara as one of the best entertainers of all times, but think she should stay out of politics. Al democrats don't have the same views as the Hollywood hot line. I also don't feel Bush or Clinton should have been impeached. Bush had majority support from Congress and the Senate for the war. Despite the intentions of going to war against Sadom Hussaine should have been done a long time ago by all the countries that signed the international law against Genicide. Someone has to be a leader and America stepped up to the plate even if it was decades too late. I am surprised Barbara who is Jewish never gave that a thought. It is OK to commit Genocide as long as it is not done against the Jews.

NoOnesHomeBoy   December 8th, 2008 10:12 am ET

I'm sure Barbra wanted to bend over and give W. a proper target to kiss...

Lance Coardill   December 8th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Lucky guy, President Bush. Clinton would have found a way to insert the tounge

sophia nyc   December 8th, 2008 10:09 am ET

No, what Bush has done was sodomize American society. It is NOT water under the bridge. Hold him accountable.

MK   December 8th, 2008 10:07 am ET

YUCK.

Dave   December 8th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Typical. Can't have your cake and eat it too Babs.

Steve from Florida   December 8th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Who cares what a Hollywood type thinks?

Although I am a clear Bush "disliker", Barbra's or any entertainer's views have no impact on my choices for politicians or anything else!

They are, in fact, only pretenders.

The Pecan State Pundit   December 8th, 2008 10:05 am ET

The worst kind of Conservative embraces the worst kind of Liberal. I'll have nightmares tonight.

Jamie   December 8th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Yuk.

beckster   December 8th, 2008 10:04 am ET

WHO IS JOHN GALT?

Tony   December 8th, 2008 10:03 am ET

Barbara Streisand is maybe the stupidest entertainer ever. But she has A LOT of competition.

Mike   December 8th, 2008 10:01 am ET

He should have punched her in the mouth instead of a kiss. I could have respected him for that.

Red Hen   December 8th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Like most Hollywood Hypocrites, Ms. Streisand has chosen personal gain over her lofty political ideals instead. She certainly had the option of waiting to be kissed by the 'Big O' but chose instead to 'get it now' from a man whose grace and manners transcends her political ideology.
Kudos to G. W. for showing that the President can honor ALL Americans for their achievements, even those who have been critical, vicious and just outright rude (including Jimmy Carter). Way to go George, your mama would be proud!

TexasIndependent   December 8th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Streisand needs to stick to entertainment and stay out of politics. Impeachment? Are you kidding me? You don't impeach a president simply because you disagree with his ideas.

Beca   December 8th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Just like Obama is bringing some of his rivals to work for him, Bush is recognizing people that are actually against him. Not a big deal!

Jon   December 8th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Ew.

clifford   December 8th, 2008 9:59 am ET

I'll bet this dumb broad didn't even know the President kissed her!!!

Anonymous   December 8th, 2008 9:58 am ET

How ungrateful can you get...I think that there are other entertainers that deserved the reward before her. If it wasn't for Bush keeping us safe all these years she may not have been alive to enjoy this award at all!

Medrith G. Hamilton   December 8th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Ms. Streisand....you cannot even be a polite human being.....you are a really cruel, insensitve person.....we are all God's children...did you ever hear of GOD...be nice, tis the season girl!

FL for Obama   December 8th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Go, Babs!

JeremyK   December 8th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Isn't it amazing how there haven't been any claims that Obama stole the election? I guarantee you that if McCain had one, that's all we'd be hearing...

rob   December 8th, 2008 9:56 am ET

If she had any integrity at all she would have been true to her convictions about GW Bush and turned her back on him.

It shows that Babs and her ILK in hollywood are all hot air, although it is an example of how one should act, if for nothing else, a show of respect for the office. For that I give her credit.

TRUTH   December 8th, 2008 9:54 am ET

BARBARA enjoyed her kiss to send off the worst president in history of US (bush), the destroyer of the republican party

benbe   December 8th, 2008 9:54 am ET

I hope he has his shots up to date!

Doug R.   December 8th, 2008 9:53 am ET

Remember when Marlon Brando kissed Larry King.
Art does transcend politics but Bush's understanding and appreciation of art is nil.

JB Illinois   December 8th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Are you predicting gas will be four dollars a gallon? Hum didn't know that. he probably didn't know that Streisand was calling for his impeachment either or perhaps to much partying threw him over the edge.

Apocalypse Now   December 8th, 2008 9:49 am ET

It's the end of the world! Run for your lives!!!!!!!!!

HouseDiva   December 8th, 2008 9:49 am ET

i don't care for either of them.

allen   December 8th, 2008 9:49 am ET

eeeewww!

Virginia   December 8th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Big deal-her kiss would be like the kiss Jesus received from Judas Iscariot.......how many pieces of silver was she paid to be nice?

chuck   December 8th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Barbara Streisand just kissed the biggest criminal of the world.

Virginia   December 8th, 2008 9:47 am ET

I couldn't let this monster kiss me, no matter what the circumstances.

Proud American from New England   December 8th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Disgusting. What is wrong with that woman?

jerry rubin, Whitefish Bay, WI   December 8th, 2008 9:47 am ET

She should have kick him where it most hurts, by accident of course.

Cathy R., Philadelphia, PA   December 8th, 2008 9:45 am ET

My heart goes out to Ms. Streisand. It would have been much more of an honor to receive the award from an honorable man - P-E Barack Obama.

Instead, she received a kiss from a cold, lying, dishonorable fish.

Ray   December 8th, 2008 9:44 am ET

She did not have to attend the event or just decline the award if she dislikes Bush so much.

ch   December 8th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Streisand supported Hillary in the primary – she is a smart (and talented) lady!

charlie in maine   December 8th, 2008 9:44 am ET

She is happy to be kissing him good-bye. If it would speed his departure I would give him a hug.

Lori   December 8th, 2008 9:42 am ET

I agree Barbara. It would have been better to receive the award under President Obama.

Seattle Sue   December 8th, 2008 9:42 am ET

And then she made a mad dash for the disinfectant.

Mike   December 8th, 2008 9:34 am ET

Streisand is SO irrelevant that I am amazed CNN reports this.

Salt   December 8th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Dear Mr. President...
Could you please stop pardoning turkeys, dedicating paintings of yourself and smooching celebrities for just a moment and address all of us on the state of our tanked economy? You are still in office for a number of days yet. Just a reminder.

Thanks!
