Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been taken into custody.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been taken into custody.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - FBI agents arrested Democratic Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich Tuesday on federal corruption charges, the U.S. attorney's office said.

The governor's chief of staff, John Harris, was also arrested on corruption charges.

The government says the two were "conspiring to obtain personal financial benefits" for the Illinois governor by leveraging his authority to appoint a U.S. senator. Blagojevich has the sole power to appoint a successor to the senate seat being vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. The U.S. attorney alleges Harris and Blagojevich are "engaging in ongoing criminal activity."

CNN's Short List: Who could replace Obama in the Senate?

Blagojevich and Harris will appear later Tuesday in court, the attorney's office said.

Pres-Elect Obama isn't even involved with this, if you read the files. I bet if the Governor of Arizona had a scandal, boy we'd point to McCain.

Tons of good people come from really bad roots, does it make them bad?

American Citizen   December 9th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Let's wait to find more. The people making the accusations are with the Bush administration.

Jaime Mesa,AZ   December 9th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

seems like a breaking news story! I guess the Gov thought he was an old time Dem Mayor of Chicago! It will be interesting to see how much a Senate seat was being marketed for, who took bait and who turned them in! I wonder if the New York Senate Seat would be valued at. OK Tongue in Cheek as a rabid liberal Democrat; but I have to sayit would be appealing while we are selling key government spots to raise ANY amount of money to be able to buy the Govenorship of Arizona for another fiscally savvy and intelligent and informed and wonderful and responsible person to replace our Govenor Nopalitano. She will be replaced per our Constitution here in Arizona by Secry of State Jan Brewer a very Conservative, Right Republican who sees more eye to eye with our outrageous Wild West Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Ironies of ironies we are going to go backwards here with a Republican Senate,Congress, Govenor and powerful Sheriff of the most populous county (Phoenix proper). Oh well, I will try to find the humor in it all, as long as my Freedom of Speech is still determined by the Federal Constitution. Gov. Napalotano was the voice of reason, and so outstanding a Govenor she still kept her job with high honors even in John McCain's home state.

Ummmm Jo-Ann.... his "whole" political career? How long is that? 3 years?

BTW... This statement is not a reflection of my opinion of his involvement in this case. I'm not an Obama-bot what-so-ever, but I also do not believe he is involved in this.

Maybe if you folks actually took the time to LEARN about things, you might find out that they are not tied to each other in ANY way except that they were both politicians from IL. Man, I swear my brain goes soft every time I read your ignorant comments!

steveB   December 9th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

For the "Ha-I told-you-so" who have some insider information on the link between Obama and this scandal which certainly includes the general liberal and democratic cabal. Aren't you the same guys who believed that Hillary killed that travel-coordinator appointee in the park, and the Clinton's were actually involved in drug deals.

You should meet my friend's dad who has set up a command center in his basement putting together the evidence that the British royalty have rigged the Ohio lottery.

Those on both the right and the left who use the political arena to express your good vs evil, us vs them with no areas of grey mentality, are a distraction at best and make us all cynical. You are NOT a productive part of what our founders and – those of us who have a shred of idealism left – think of as the 'great experiment.' flawed but a work-in-progress.

As a small measure of redemption, you guys are kind of an entertaining distraction. However, it is a bit of a guilty and nasty pleasure. Not unlike laughing at someone who doesn't realize what everyone thinks is so funny.

CD in CO   December 9th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

This is going to be fun – watching to see how the left-wing and the media can spin this to make it Bush's fault. It's what they have been doing about every problem in the last 8 years, so why not this one too?

GuyInVA   December 9th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Mike   December 9th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

You people commenting about Obama in this post about Blagojevich are honestly either just plain dumb or so blinded by your ignorance you can't see the forest for the trees.

1) Blagojevich and Obama had nothing directly to do with each other besides working in the same government (guess that ties McCain and Obama too, eh, since they are both in Congress?).
2) Blagojevich, if you read the accusations, tried to sell the Senate seat having nothing to do with the Presidency.
3) In the papers Blagojevich and his cronies stated that Obama would never "sell" them a place in his government.

Stop being ignorant and actually examine the accusations and investigation before spewing your comments.

HAHAHA   December 9th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

What did you expect from the state that gave you Obama? Blago will only need to do a couple of years before Obama Bin Laden will grant him a pardon.

Ted Stevens, Sarah Palin.... I don't know who's more corrupt...Chicago politicians or Alaskan politicians

Chuck in LA   December 9th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Here we go again. If it's someone from the other party, then it's indicative of widespread corruption and should be investigated to the fullest extent. If it's someone from your party, then it's a partisan witch hunt and it should be stopped immediately.

Don't you partisans on BOTH sides get tired of doing the same song and dance every time a government official gets arrested?

Susan, Macedon New York   December 9th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Hey, Obamarama,
Take a look at the republican party and see how many crooks you've got! Democrats have a long way to go to catch up with the Republicans!!! Tom DeLay, Stevens from Alaska, Larry Craig and that guy from California (Randy White?) are just a few examples and they're the ones that were caught! Imagine how many are still out there stealing from the public they're supposed to be serving!

What's wrong with Fitzgerald trying to sell obma's seat? The presidential election was bought. I say who ever raises the most money should get it. That's the Chicago way you know? Whoever wants the senators seat could even see about getting some contributions from Iran, Africa, and Osama Bin Laden may even donate. That is if he has any money left after donating to obama.

Donnaka Milton   December 9th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Stuff like this drives me frickin' crazy. Just yesterday I seen him on the news, standing up for the people at a local business that closed its doors on its own people. I had never heard of him before yesterday, but I thought he must be a real stand-up guy. I was proud of this unknown man. But then I get on this website and he's plastered all over. A crook. A criminal. A backstabbing politician. Thank goodness for Obama and my wonderful governor Kathleen Sebilius, because without them, my faith in politics would be gone.

I've lived in The Chicagoland area for forty years. Blago's arrest must be a shock to the rest of the country. For us here in Illinois it's just business as usual.

I just hope our brand of politics doesn't infect the rest of the nation. Especially since half of City Hall is moving to the White House in January.

Don't get me wrong. I hope Obama and the country succeed. I'm just saying it will be interesting to watch.

Good luck and God Bless.

carment   December 9th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

@ObamaramaBOT Watch

Maybe you should have READ the indictment before putting both feet in it:

They caught Blago on tape cursing the Obama team because they REFUSED his request for a bribe regarding the Senate seat. The quote is 'Later in the conversation, ROD BLAGOJEVICH said he knows that the President-elect wants Senate Candidate 1 for the Senate seat but "they"re not willing to give me anything except appreciation. [Expletive] them."

Page 66 of the indictment.

Some people are really stupid Obama is not involve in any of this.Stop acting all crazy and put your right wing talk back in check. Why would he be involve with someone so low when he is going to become the President! And about the post-election losing streak well for one it was Georgia for crying out loud if a republican can't win a seat there then it says more about them and not the dems, second the one in louisiana well the guy was charge on corruption what did you expect? Of course the republican is going to have an easy time there and apparantely some people did not even know there was an election. Though I doubt they would have even voted for Jefferson after the charges.

Steve   December 9th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Whether or not Obama was aware of what was happening is not the point. This simply shows what things are like where Obama cut his teeth and got his experience. This is how it's done where he comes from.

BUT, if Blago does have ANYTHING on Obama or Rahm Emmanuel, they should both be very, very worried today!

David   December 9th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I am not going to say this reflects on Obama, it doesn't, and he doesn't appear to be involved in this in the least, and thank God for that.

However...I will say that you Democrats who somehow think your party holds some moral high ground over others are nuts, and this is the proof, and so is the scumbag Rep. that lost is House seat in Lousiana last week, you have just as many crooks and theives as the Republicans do!

BeauMan   December 9th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Calm down, Democrats. Intelligent Republicans are not persecuting Obama...yet. But, man oh man...if this would have been a Republican governor, there would be hundreds of you hypocrites on here pointing fingers, blaming Bush, and spouting off that "all Republicans are crooks". Funny part is...you darn well know I'm 100% correct!!!

This is not about Obama folks. Its about the cleaning up of America. This is a new day dawning in this country and we want all corrupt politicains gone. The age of corruption of the last 8 years are over in Washington and across this country. So lets start with the Dems if we must. Its Blagojevich, William Jefferson and Charlie Rangel and maybe than also Richard Daley. Lets not forget the old coot from Alaska Ted Stevens. Then also lets go after the Republicans. Also we need to go back and get Rove, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld and gang.

Americans want their country back boys and girls and we will take it back one vote at a time.

Ohio for Obama- Suburbs   December 9th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

There is only on reason Illinois is a blue state – Chicago's political machine. South of Joliet is red. The Chicago thugs have soiled Springfield for long enough. If another dirty Chicago politician gets in, the rest of Illinois should demand that Cook county become it's own state. It will be interesting to see how much dirt Blagojevich will be willing to spill for a plea bargain and who else is implicated.

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   December 9th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Rob? What do you mean by "progressive?" Progress toward a government that keeps it's nose out of peoples' lives and it's sticky fingers out of their wallets?

It really bugs me the way the term "progressive" has been usurped as a euphemism for "socialist," like it's somehow "progress" to reject the concept of people taking responsibility for the conduct of their own lives and turn, whining, to Big Daddy government to solve their problems for them.

Mark   December 9th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Finally, some of these corrupt politicians are getting caught. I hope they get the book thrown at them. What a list:
Governor of Illinois (democrat),
Senator from Alaska (republican),
Senator from Minnisota (republican),
Representative from New York (democrat),

and the list keeps growing. It really shows that the two parties are one in the same. In my eyes, a corrupt politician is equal to if not worse than a murderer. We the people of the United States need to hold these crooks accountable for their blatent abuse of their positions.

deb   December 9th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Rob said, Progressives, like me, are already becoming suspicious of Obama's "center right" cabinet appointments.

Yeah, Clinton and Richardson are clearly right wingers.

I find it genuinely amusing that during the election the right screamed about how Obama was a radical liberal extremist, was "the most liberal Senator in congress" and would toss out the baby with the bathwater in a fevered effort to indiscriminately change. And now he's proving how wrong the fear-mongers were.

And because of that, left wing extremists are mad at him. You just can't please everyone. ;)

I'm very liberal, but I'm wise enough to know that with the economy in the tank and our foreign relations tattered, the right mix of bold moves, temperance and bipartisanship is needed to turn our great nation around. Thank heaven, Obama seems the same: deeply liberal yet tempered by wisdom and practicality.

Obama haters need to take their time and READ! The President-Elect REJECTED this sleazeball! He refused to pay him a dime for anything! Did you not read about his his f-world laced tirade AGAINST Obama for NOT paying him off?

grewupinIllinois   December 9th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

For the rest of you that grew up or live in another state- This is Illinois!

That basically says it all- In the last 30 years, 4 governors/former governors (Dem and Rep) of Illinois have been convicted of crimes- one later had conviction overturned.

It is just about the free market principal of selling anything for its highest value and letting the little people fend for themselves.

There have been some very effective leaders who have come FROM Illinois and made a major, positive impact on the world around them after they got to Washington- Abraham Lincoln, Adlai Stevenson, Everett Dirksen, and (hopefully) Barack Obama.

BUT- the rest of the gang that liked being big fish in small ponds have defined Illinois politics for quite a while- the "original" Mayor Dailey and the four (now five) defrocked governors plus a host of local wiz-bang mayors and legislators. In Illinois, you get used to it and hope that the next elected "leader" will do the right thing.

Dennis   December 9th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

What is going on with this country's political and corporate "leadership"?!? Greed and corruption has become the order of the day. We have members of Congress indicted and convicted, two governors caught in misdeeds, a State legislature here in California that is completely dysfunctional, Wall Street greed from the corporate boardroom all the way down to the individual investors, and ineptness on the part of the Big 3. We need a good house-cleaning.

failboat nubsauce   December 9th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

No, thats what Repubs do after thier party members are convicted of Felonies.

I wonder how Our Wonderful President Elect ever survived this environment?? I hope he didnt make any deals!!

Gotta love this. Typical democrat corruption. I wonder how long it will take for Obama to say he never knew Gov. Blago? And that he only worked in the same neighborhood?

Democrats are slimeballs, proven twice this week. (don't forget Democrat WIlliam Jefferson, La.)

I wonder what the French think of all this. How must we look to the rest of the world. Has someone asked Madonna what she thinks. How will we know what to do until Michael Moore tells us. Where is Pelosi denouncing the party of "corruption"?

I don't see the big deal about all of this anyway. The people have spoken, and this is what we want dadgummit. This is the change we have wanted. Leave him alone, the economy is bad and he needs the money just like the rest of us. Yeah that's it. This is Bush's fault!!!

ObamaramaBOT Watch, this has nothing to do with Obama. This was the Govs doing. Oh wait, that's right, Obama is responsible for the actions of everybody he knows and has met in his life. Even when those events happen decades before he met them, and in this case after he left.

Typical repub, you can't take responsibility for your own actions and are used to having a scapegoat and someone other than the responsible party to blame.

This is Gov Blagojevichs doing, send him to trial, find him guilty and send him to prison, period.

john   December 9th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I don't see any posts saying Obama had a hand in this (other than getting him deservably arrested). The left-wing nuts must be pretty paronoid of the right. Golly guys, one of yours is a thug-crook who got caught – just wish him well in jail and don't worry about what the right will say or do...

House Speaker Pelosi....instead of having a trillion dollars stimulus bill of wasteful government spending waiting for our beloved President-Elect Obama....please have articles of impeachment ready.

Red, Red WHINE!!   December 9th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

This is how Democrats handle it! They actually catch them, and place them into custody. Obama has the integrity to ensure any and all corruption is discovered, investigated and brought to justice.

I applaud Obama for his integrity. A republican president elect would have done all that is possible to hide this and would have taken an active role in the crime.

Michael-Ventura,CA   December 9th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

I was amazed to see what is going on in the Governor's Office in Illinois. I know his republican predecessor is already in prison...looks like they could be roomies.
The US is NOT for sale! Not to republicans, not to Democrats, not to ANYONE.
I hope people don't put the blame on Barack Obama- although I'm sure the Karl Rove-types will.
The politics of OLD are OVER- we are about to see CHANGE- Noone is above the Law- that includes all politicians-red or blue.

For all of you who will try to point a finger at Barack Obama as having had a hand in this:

If you took time to read the criminal complaint, all 78 pages, you'd see that the President-elect is not involved. In fact, there are indications (see Paragraphs 92 and 101) that Blagojevich and his advisers recognized that Obama would not sell a cabinet position for seeing that his choice for the Senate seat got the job.

Arthur   December 9th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Dec. 8 (Bloomberg) - Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich said the state will suspend business with Bank of America Corp. until the lender restores credit to the shuttered Republic Windows & Doors company in Chicago where workers are staging a sit-in.

Chris   December 9th, 2008 11:52 am ET

In an effort to intercept the Obama haters from Claiming he was involved, here is a quote you all should read:

From Fitzgerald's statement:

In a conversation with Harris on November 11, the charges state, Blagojevich said he knew that the President-elect wanted Senate Candidate 1 for the open seat but "they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation. [Expletive] them."

So, you are all wrong; Obama was not playing in Blago's pool. Go hate something else.

George Gibbs   December 9th, 2008 11:52 am ET

Finally. I find it interesting that of all the alleged corrupt actions taken by Rod Blagojevich and his administration, the appointment of Obama's successor may be the one that does him in.

Stefan   December 9th, 2008 11:52 am ET

If Blagojevich is proven guilty he she be punished to the full extent of the law.

smokensqueal   December 9th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Finally, I hope by taking this long they have a good open and closed case against another Chicago crook. I really wish Chicago would break off Illinois and be it's own state. That little area is so corrupt that it tarnishes the whole state. Everyone in the state could vote one way but if Cook County votes for the crooks they always win. It's a complete joke. Nothing but bumbs and crooks come out of Chicago. Be afraid be very afraid since Obama is from the same circle. It would be funny if Obama decides not to live in the White House but in Chicago just like Rod wouldn't live in Springfield.

Kim, Ohio   December 9th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Before anyone gets off on how much of a crook this one is, let's not forget that the entire Congress is bombarded daily with so-called lobbyists who offer "favors" in exchange for legislation, and that in fact the entire government appears to be one gigantic mafia-type extortion organization. How much have Bush and Cheney and Rove gotten under the table over the years? How much is Pelosi getting under the table for the auto bailout? How much are other people getting for all the bailouts to come–the homebuilders, who are now asking for a handout, the retailers next, the education institutions, the states, the cities, and who knows what else?

Do not fret, Obamamaniacs – not a chance this story has legs.

The extent of the Gov's dealings will never been uncovered, as this kind of truth (the truths related to anyone remotely close to popular dems) is the kind that gets squashed by a Dem controlled Washington aided by a cooperative media.

To be clear , I'm not suggesting that Obama has any significant link to this clearly corrupt governor. What I am suggesting is that the proverbial broom is coming out to send this under the proverbial rug, so we'll never be able to know who actually is in bed with him.

This is Gov Blagojevichs doing, send him to trial, find him guilty and send him to prison, period.

Dennis   December 9th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Illinois has had a recent run of corrupt politicians. Wonder about the one they're sending to the White House.

There goes Chicago's Olympic hopes.

Vicki5   December 9th, 2008 11:36 am ET

My first thought, he went after Bank of America and look what happened. Bank of America didn't even need bailout money. From what I understand, they didn't get into the sub-prime mess. Yet, they received tons of money in the bailout. Why? Does anyone else worry over one bank being so big and so powerful? Does anyone else contemplate what can happen?

onwards   December 9th, 2008 11:36 am ET

I bet the bitter Hillary-fanatics are going to say Obama is to blame for this.

Well, I guess that means Hillary is responsible for Elliot Spitzer.

Laverne   December 9th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Obama did not appoint Blagojevich as governor, the people of Illinois voted in him. Obama is not responsible for everything that goes in Illinois, just like you can't blame other politicians everytime something happens in the state they just happen to be from. This is just another distraction for NON Obama supporters to jump on the band wagon of blame. Also, to my liberal and progressive buddies, please be patient. Obama is doing an excellent job in picking his team. One important thing to keep in mind we are not living in the age of the 90's. The world including the US is different not and our approach will have to be different no matter if we like it or not. Obama is committed to getting the smartest people he can get and is doing so without idealogy. He has to build a concensus right now in order to get anything done. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Obama is a strategic person when it comes to politics and it is better to have a strategist than someone who does not think past the moment. My message to the Obama supporters, Don't lose HOPE. Obama is gonna need us and this is not the time to become faint hearted. The ride hasn't even begun yet.

Michael, Houston Texas   December 9th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Here we go. The article did not say Obama had anything to do with all of this. But you Obama haters will still try to tie him into anything that anyone does. And ObamaramaBOT Watch, name an honest politician. No seriously name one. Exactly. What you idiots fail to realize is that we Obama supporters have high expections regarding President Obama's performance, higher than you. Yes, we want him to suceed and get our country back on track, unlike some of you who want him to fail, which baffles me because if he fails, then YOU fail, and we fail. Oh and BTW, Bob from down under, learn how to complete a sentence before you start spewing your hatred.

GOP McCain/Palin supporter   December 9th, 2008 11:35 am ET

This is the sea of supporters who thought the Dems are cleaner that the Republicans. Before long, all Americans will withness the true colors of the Dems and the 1st term Senator (president-elect) Barack Obama. By then, regret and regret...

Not that the Republicans are great, but walking the conservative leaning path should be safer than the corrupt acts executed in the broad day light.

Danny in Chicago   December 9th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Um.....this has very little to do with Obama people. I live in Chicago and unless you know what's going on in this state's capital it's very hard to know all that is really going on with this complicated situation.

Blago is very corrupt – all the resko stuff that everyone tried to blame on Obama has SO MUCH MORE to do with the REPUBLICAN governor of Illinois. This new information is more a reflection on the corrupt REPUBLICAN party than the Democrats – just wanted to be clear.

The state politics in Illinois is really really bad. This is another reason why Obama voted 'PRESENT' so many times – he was trying to stay out of partisan politics! Of course, the media and Republicans didn't want the AVERAGE person to know that – of course not!

The situation in Illinois is very complicated – if you find this new information interested, I would advise looking into the last 10 years or so to get really informed so you can understand the complexities of it all.

Don't get me wrong – Blago is an idiot, corrupt, opportunist and he SHOULD go to jail! This is a long time in coming and thank god the Fed has gotten involved.

But if you think this has ANYTHING to do with Obama and his new administration – you're just misinformed. It's cool, but look into it more because it's complicated.

That's my spiel....

ANAG LOS ANGELES, CA   December 9th, 2008 11:33 am ET

Thats horrible what a loser this guy..... i dont think Obama will back him at all.

Sarge in Florida   December 9th, 2008 11:33 am ET

Let the bashing begin...Let's start letting out the skeletons on the Republicans...Nixon, Liddy (scooter), Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft, Aberham, Rice, Tenet, Rove (Closeted Homo) the list goes on and one..One thing that they will get away with it is because G.W. Bush ignored the US Constitution...Obama had no part with the charges or knowledge of the Governor actions. This Governor should be disgusted with himself to put the next president in such a harmful biased way...

Dr. No   December 9th, 2008 11:33 am ET

Yep, it's always Obama's fault. Blame it on Obama because that's just the easy and uneducated decision to make. Oh yeah, most republicans are uneducated [rednecks].

Adam   December 9th, 2008 11:32 am ET

What does this have to do with Obama? I see no reason for a connection between this guy and him apart from being from the same state.

Vigla   December 9th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Bob,

Stop bringing Obama into this. What, you're going to accuse him of smoking? Is that all you got? By your post I can see that grammar and spelling are not your strong suits...

John   December 9th, 2008 11:31 am ET

No, I don't think Obama had anything to do with this. Even he isn't THAT dumb. But It is a little concerning that the man you (not me) brought in to run the country was brought up through this corrupt Chicago political machine. Lets hope he is a little bit different.

Chicagoan   December 9th, 2008 11:30 am ET

This was in the works during the presidential campaign. Six months ago the Feds said they almost had enough to indict Blago.

It's funny how it was pushed to the back burner. Now that it has happened the media can't ignore it any longer.

To my fellow Americans:
I have been a resident of Illinois and Chicago for forty years. I've seen them come and go from both parties. The corruption is some of the worst in the world. I just hope the rest of the country won't be affected. Especially since Obama is moving half of City Hall into the White House come January. I still have hope in Obama but we have to be vigilant.

It just goes to show you. You can't just blindly follow a party line. Be it Democrat or Republican. There are crooks on both sides.

Greg Pottstown, Pa.   December 9th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Corruption in our govt., say it ain't so. dems repubs and indys all have one thing in common and that is that they are all corrupt. Yes this means PE Obama too. All people in our govt, are corrupt. The sad thing is that right now many are thinking only the people on the other side are corrupt the sad part being that people are just that gullible.

Mohammed   December 9th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Joe, Chicago IL   December 9th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Not too bad. Only took you guys 2 hours to get the NEWS out.

I guess that puff pieces like 'Obama's Transition Approval Rating' and editorial pieces on 'What the Obama's will wear on Inaguration Day' are more important than the NEWS.

How far does this go up? I am sure that Obama will now say that he no longer has had any imput on his replacement...err...all the stories of how he was providing recommendations were all...err...incorrect...because he was picking out his outfit for his Inaguration.

Vigla   December 9th, 2008 11:29 am ET

This was bound to happen. There have been corruption charges swirling around this guy for the last few years. It has nothing to do with Pres Elect Obama. If the gov is guilty he should go to jail. End of story.

As for those on the right salivating, Gov Ryan before him was just as bad. Please, people of Illinois, pick someone who isn't a crook to be gov, OK?

Obama bot,

You are an absolute nut if you try to conflate Obama and this. Yes, Obama WILL (and already is) bringing change by evicting Bush and his gang of fools.

Purple Nurple   December 9th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Marc   December 9th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Oh boy...
So the governor is trying to lillegally benefit from the power he has to chose who's gonna be the sucessor of the PEOTUS in the US Senate? Shame on him! Lock him up (AFTER a due legal process of course) and give him everything the law says he deserves to receive!
The same to his chief of staff, of course.
Now... what does it have to do with the change Obama has promised?
Does he have anything to do with the case?
If yes, we're done for... an impeachment process right now is one of the last things we need, and he wasn't sworn yet!, but given the circunstamces would be the right (an only) thing to do.
If not... get over it, let him be sworn to start throwing your vain rocks.
But first of course, we need to know what exactly are the charges and what the FBI found out about the story...

NY Republican   December 9th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Did the Chicago cronies he's bringing along with him graduate from the same Chicago School of Politics?

You bet they did!

I want to hear from all the left wing crazies who have been selling the "Republicans are corrupt" slogan for the past few years. Let's face it, you need to realize what us moderates already know...a majority of politicians are corrupt, no matter the party affiliation! Both the Republicans and Democrats have made a mess of this country and they better figure out a way to get us out ASAP or they will ALL see the results next time they are up for election!! If we don't see the necessary change, we need to start firing these incumbents who helped put our country in debt, in a recession and many of our citizens without food and homes etc...

Ravi in WV   December 9th, 2008 11:26 am ET

There is not much time left to bring people like this to justice. After Obama takes over in January there will most likely be plenty of changes in the justice department, and they will be forced to look the other way in these situations. So pop these fools whilst you can.

I can't wait to read what the anti-Obamites will be saying on this blog.
Let me guess, they will probably link Gov. Blagojevich directly to Barack Obama. As if our President Elect is directly involved.

Yes there are dirty politicians in Chicago. Just like you will find anywhere else.

Hmmm,
Chicago Politics can't be any worse than let's say Alaska....

Kenneth   December 9th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Blagojevich was reported as saying "they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation. F- them." It would seem like Obama did the correct thing by not caving into this freak. How does this reflect badly on him? They are from the same state?

TexasBob   December 9th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Well, well. Looks like all the conspiracy theorists (from the left as well as from the right, as illustrated above) are starting to come out of the woodwork. They've had so little to work with considering the high ethical, moral and political standards of the president-elect, so I suppose this will give them some meat for their peculiar "vilification mills" for awhile. There's nothing worse than a frustrated conspiracy theorist, after all.

I'm no Democrat but it sounds like the racist, extremist, neo-cons will do everything they can to tie this to him. They need their own party and leave the Republican platform for those of us who still hold it's truth. Maybe they could call themselves Taliban?

St Louis for Obama   December 9th, 2008 11:20 am ET

OK seriously? A governor from Obama's home state and a dem gets arrested and it automatically means that Obama and his team are in cahoots? I guess if your neighbor gets arrested and they are of the same political affiliation as you, that automatically means you had something to do with it, right? That seems to be the logic here. What is wrong with you people? They've been investigating this guy and his administration for 3 yrs. This is someone who apparently saw a new opportunity and took it if he's guilty. Period. Give it a rest.

Obama is President Elect of the United States...

The idiots salivating at linking Blago's brazen lunacy and corruption to Obama are dreaming. HOWEVER, as a Chicagoan living in AZ now for 6 years.... it IS incredibly sad to have a SUCCESSION of Illinois governors go down in flames.. (Ryan is STILL in jail)....
Illinois had such high hopes for Blago.

ugh..

politics stinks.

I think this is just the beginning. Change is good right? I wonder how many more of Obamas cronies will fall.

Sheryl   December 9th, 2008 11:13 am ET

You People are something else....Obama didn't elect the Gov of Illinois nor does Obama have a Federal Agent position to find those who are corrupt. Those of you who think Obama knew what these two where up to and did nothing are seriously deranged. This is exactly why Obama wanted to meet with the Govenors so he could put them on Notice that things are going to CHANGE on all areas of Governing from the Bottom to the Top. States should be held accountable for there actions. To try and stain Obama's character for the alleged corruption of others is a really big stretch.

President Elect Obama will do great things for this Country, those who think otherwise, will you be able to admit that you where Wrong ? Doubtful considering you don't have a Open Mind nor do you have anything positive to contribute. WE ARE ALL IN THIS MESS TOGETHER, thankfully we finally have a Incoming Non-Billionaire President who is about the People !! Pray daily for our Country and be Optimistic of our Future.

Terry Sagedy   December 9th, 2008 11:12 am ET

Geesh. What have we come to in this country. Haven't we learned anything about what's right and what's wrong. And who gives a darn what party they're from...one week it's an elephant going down in the restroom, next it's a donkey going down in flames for corruption.

We seriously need some guidance for our "respected elected."

Nothing Good   December 9th, 2008 11:11 am ET

Is there anything good coming out of Illinois, we all are imperfect and sinful human beings, (just like Obama's addiction to nicotine), and it is all fairy tale? It is even worse if one is the eyes of the public, for the whole world to see, and as an example or model for the young kids. Only time can tell, four years from now, when we have to deal with terrorism, and the seasoned leaders from Russia, North Korea, China, India, Pakistan, Cuba, Iran, Syria and Israel. It is American destiny, Mrs Obama is so beautiful and talented, as if the White House is built just for her, and she will become the first woman president someday.

eugene   December 9th, 2008 11:11 am ET

Like Rob,am very concerned about Obama going to to far center right, when 88% of the people who voted for him is from the far left, right now am losing faith in all politicans, what this country needs is a progressive 3rd party, who is going to stand up for ordinary people like myself, because the democrats are not,in you know the republicans never will,so if Obama continues his path to the right,it is really time to start seriously looking at a 3rd party, because am tired of being lied too,in that is what obama have done ,he used us to get elected,in when he got elected he has turned his back on us,it really hurts just talking about it,because i thought he would be very different, but he is not,and am very tired of it.

Democrat corruption ? Heavens !!

From Illinois   December 9th, 2008 11:05 am ET

This really has been a long time in the making. This guy has been bad news for the people of Illinois since he took office. First he wouldn't move to the Governor's Mansion, instead, forcing Illinois taxpayers to foot the bill for him flying to Springfield (and back) on a regular basis. The reason – he didn't want to take his daughter out of school, yet Illinois has a full-time state legislature. He has let down the people of Illinois on a regular basis and only narrowly won re-election. Both Democrats and Republicans in Illinois have been unhappy with him, and it was only a matter of time before he got caught. It will be interesting to see what else comes up during this investigation...I doubt this will be last we hear of any corruption charges for Gov. Rod.

Huh?   December 9th, 2008 11:04 am ET

@ObamaramaBOT Watch, You are a moron. Look at we got for the last eight years of your buddy Bush. Let not forget about the Repugs and their corruption problems. There has been no link between Obama and the Illinois governors problems. Being governor Illionois must be a hot bed of corruption, the Republican predicessor to Blagojevich had his own corruption problems. Why don't you crawl in your hole and listen to your messiah, Rush and Hannity tell lies? Stop bein a sheep of the GOP party or we will all be clinging to religion and guns because under GOP rule there will be not hope, no money and no jobs just fear..

Jaye   December 9th, 2008 10:59 am ET

Oh how the press will try and tie this in with Obama. Sheesh!

linus, Chicago   December 9th, 2008 10:58 am ET

Speaking as someone who has lived in Chicago for more than a decade, Blagojevich has been accused of shady deals from the very beginning of his governorship, which began in 2003, well before Obama was elected to the US Senate. Furthermore, since the allegations are about who would take Obama's place in the US Senate, the events quite obviously could not have occurred until AFTER Obama won the Presidential election. So there is no reason to believe Obama could be involved in any of this.

N. S. Huntsville, Al   December 9th, 2008 10:58 am ET

WOW WOW THATS ALL I CAN SAY WOW

Nathan   December 9th, 2008 10:57 am ET

I see all the right wing nutjobs are out in full force. I'm sure if any Democrat in any state in this nation gets busted doing anything, then it surely must be Obama's fault. Get a life, the whole lot of you.

Chris   December 9th, 2008 10:57 am ET

Not surprising, I like how since its a Democratic governor, there is a lack of the usual 1000 posts in broken English condemning the Republicans and their evil ways. Keep dreaming....all politicians are the same, regardless of political affiliation. Obama will show his allegiance in time.

60 year old white female and proud supporter of PE Obama   December 9th, 2008 10:57 am ET

First, all of the usual Obama bashers...where is the connection to Obama?? Was this governor a campaigner for PE Obama? How can a loss by a democrat in Georgia be a "losing" streak?? or the lose of a seat to an accused felon be a losing streak?

Why wasn't every scummy Republican directly tied to Bush??

NYCVOTER   December 9th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Ahh good old Chicago politics...it's a good thing we don't have a President from there, oh wait! Oh well at least the Chief of Staff can keep him grounded oh no he's a Chicago crook too......LOL

Noah   December 9th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Just more of the Illinois-Chicago style politics that bred Barack Obama. Democrats deny it exists but we just keep seeing more and more examples of it.

Ken   December 9th, 2008 10:55 am ET

My grandmother always said he was corrupt.

David   December 9th, 2008 10:55 am ET

On this article the first sentence says DEMOCRATIC Illinois gov, but on the main page...they've taken out the word Democratic...why?

If this was a Republican, we would have received a Breaking News Notice and the word Republican would be in every other sentence.

Obama Victim   December 9th, 2008 10:54 am ET

a corrupt Democrat...............?? next you will tell me there is ganbling in Casa Blanca

annoymous   December 9th, 2008 10:53 am ET

For the nit wits who are connecting President Elect Obama get over it...the democrats could have an arrest for corruption daily & still not come near what the GOP has had over the past 8 years and keep in mind what GW & his administration has done to this nation & the world.....if Blagojevich is guilty I hope they put him under the jail but we should not be swayed by the extremests on the right about any corrupt democrats....if a democrat is guilty of being corrupt they should have to pay for the crime just like the republicans....keep in mind the extremests of the right are holier than thou & most still think GW & Cheney have done a good job over the past 8 years....

Frank   December 9th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Each one is more crooked than the last. It will be interesting to see if they use the Obama seat issue as a reason to not look into things further in the past, that may implicate others.

Independent Fred   December 9th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Obama has nothing to do with this Bozo.. I'm from Illinois and trust me Blagojevich has been under investigation for years now.

Obama's been keeping his nose clean but hey...nice try connecting the two ...better luck next time.

JK Ashburn, VA   December 9th, 2008 10:52 am ET

America has been warned repeatedly about the corruption in Chicago and Illinois. Blagojevich is only the latest to get caught. More will follow. Keep an eye on Rahm Emmanuel, too. There are reasons why Obama picked him as chief of staff. There will be a "For Lease" sign in front of the White House soon.

President Obama/VA   December 9th, 2008 10:52 am ET

It's the governor's job to find a senate replacement for President-elect Obama. If he is trying to get money out of the deal, I guess he's corrupt. But first, show me some evidence. This has GOP written all over it. Who informed the Feds of this? I'm sure it was a right winger trying to fill a senate seat. This has Karl Rove written all over it.

Tammy   December 9th, 2008 10:52 am ET

No wonder it has taken so long for a replacement for obama's senate seat to be named! It must take time to find the highest bidder. However, Mr. Obama has not been implicated in this matter, and it takes true conspiracy theorists to place this on the president-elect's doorstep!

Meh   December 9th, 2008 10:52 am ET

In case anyone hasn't noticed, Obama and the Illinois gov. are two different people.
Corruption in one does not mean corruption in the other.
Give me a break. O. is a good guy.

mizbinkley   December 9th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Blagojevich is an idiot.

Clearly, appointing Obama's Senate successor was going to be a high-profile process. Did Blagojevich really think no one would find out about this?

Matt   December 9th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Oh yeah the Dems are soooo much better than Republicans aren't they?! Too bad everyone that voted for Obama was too blinded. First of all, politicians are all the same. They say whatever they think you want them to hear. They're all rich, and they're all corrupt.

As for the comment about Obama smoking... I have this to add: people were worried about electing McCain due to his age and that he might die during his term, but here you have elected someone who is purposely giving himself cancer. This is the President we want?! One that is killing himself on purpose?! And what type of example does a smoker set for our kids who we are trying to keep away from the cancer sticks?

Los   December 9th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Amazing how when Scooter Libby (or any other Republican for that matter in trouble) gets in trouble it's a "witch hunt" and he's just a single "bad apple spoiling the bunch". But if a Democrat does anything wrong it's symptomatic of a larger trend of corruption and somehow it's Barack Obama's fault. Sheesh.

Sometimes I wish I could tap into that bottomless well of self-denial shared by Republican.

Dude   December 9th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Oh come on, guys. Not everyone is a right-wing nutjob for voicing concern about the connections of these sorts of things to the man who is now going to be the President of the United States. First Tony Rezko, now this? It really is troublesome–maybe Obama is a good guy, who is above this sort of old-school, 1920s-style, Tammany Hall political corruption, but then again, maybe he isn't–if he were really good at it, unlike Blagojevich and Rezko, then we wouldn't know about it, now would we? The only way to make sure that Obama isn't, and the only way to make sure that he is and stays on the straight-and-narrow, is to make sure that people *ARE* allowed to ask these sorts of questions. What are the real connections? Should we be concerned? Wasn't that the problem we all had with Bush? Why are the people who demanded that they be allowed to question W now going about ruthlessly suppressing the same right to question the new President-elect? How is that fair? How is that democratic?

Larry C. in Texas   December 9th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Well, to tell you the truth, McCain has said throughout his campaign
that he wanted to end the corruption, saying it continually, and also
saying that washington was so corrupt, and money is behind it all.

I also am inclined to agree with "Rob" & "Obama rama bot watch"

Larry

I bet that ditzy broad had something to do with this.

DebM, Allentown, PA   December 9th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Obamarama, where and how do you see that Obama was involved in this in any way, other than the fact that it's his seat that's up for grabs?

Your response is ridiculous, and indicates that you're simply waiting for Obama to fail. You're not a patriot who will gladly welcome any improvement we might see in this country, no matter who provides it. Instead, you're a bitter, angry person who's still upset that your candidate lost. I pity you.

cj   December 9th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Be careful what you comment on, especially if you don't live in IL or have any firsthand knowledge about IL politics...I've lived in Illinois all of my life & gubernatorial politics have always been corrupt. Our former Republican governor is currently serving time in prison & praying for a pardon from W. Our current governor's corruption has nothing to do with Obama other than our governor hung a "For Sale" sign on the Senate seat vacated by Obama. This governor has been under investigation for 3 years. You can go back very far in IL politics & find huge amounts of corruption i.e. a former Secretary of State who had shoeboxes of cash hidden in a closet only to be found after he died.

Rita   December 9th, 2008 10:49 am ET

You anti-Obama people can rant and rave all you want you can't change the fact that Obama is going to be President, HA! Keep complaining.

Considering Illinois' and Chicago's reputation over the past 100+ years, how could anyone but an idiot be surprised! The state is bankrupt as well as the city, and the intellectual giants of an electorate keep electing Democrat after Democrat promising change. They got change all right, that's all that is left in their pockets and they deserve what they got.

Doug R.   December 9th, 2008 10:43 am ET

He is a dirty and crooked governor. Maybe he and the former Republican governor, George Ryan, can share a prison cell. The Republican party in Illinois, though, is completely dysfunctional and has no viable candidate to run in 2010.

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   December 9th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Good! We need more crack downs by authorities on authorities. Our level of governmental corruption has reached levels we normally declare are those of a developing nation. So, by deduction, we are "de-developing", sliding in the mudpit of petty dictators and their cronies.

As a reluctant Democrat, I am becoming concerned at this post-election losing streak the Democrats are on. Looks like more of the same. Progressives, like me, are already becoming suspicious of Obama's "center right" cabinet appointments. If I get burned again, I'll never vote for any of these bums in the future. I will turn back to the likes of Ralph Nader and Dennis Kucinich.

Here we go...   December 9th, 2008 10:32 am ET

This is so bad to hear. You would think he would be smarter (since apparently not more ethical) in such a situation since he is in Obama's state to know he would be watched more than ever. I am sure tons of people will come on to blame Obama himself since apparently personal accountability went out of the door as Obama was blamed for what ministers, adult family members and other adults did. How many people actually can control other adults in their families is interesting to me...I haven't had any luck with that...haha. Also before everyone goes pointing the finger or name party versus party, both parties have corrupt people but these people are of the people...they are from the general pop, a pop that has MANY people who commit crimes on a daily basis and many who have misdemeanors and felonies galore...promise that. Having a Masters in CJ has certainly taught me that politicians aren't generally much different than the general population that judges them from the heights of their high horses. However, I still contend that Blag should have had better judgment.

Kevin   December 9th, 2008 10:32 am ET

Not surprised. Everyone in Illinois knew this guy was corrupt. If not this route he probably would have been impeached in 09.

Lyndon from CA   December 9th, 2008 10:10 am ET

I will wait and see where this leeds. Federal attorneys in the current administration are all smelly.

Charles   December 9th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Don't let this one slip into obscurity. Cover this story, just as you would if he were a Republican.

Nobody Asked Larry But...   December 9th, 2008 10:06 am ET

It will be interesting if any of this leads back to President-elect Barack Obama.

Tony   December 9th, 2008 10:06 am ET

No surprise here; he's part Barack Obama's ilk of dirty Chicago politics. Expect Helen Jones-Kelley to join him next.

brad   December 9th, 2008 10:05 am ET

If proven guilty, throw his aXX in jail. tired of hearing these pathetic wrongdoings on both sides of the parties. He should certainly not be a part of the filling in senator deal. And I am an Obama supporter.

Nothing Changes   December 9th, 2008 10:04 am ET

All together now, say it with me, "MORON!"

From Illinois   December 9th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Thank Heavens, it's about time!

MikeNC   December 9th, 2008 10:01 am ET

This wreaks of Republican influence!

Betty Phillips   December 9th, 2008 10:01 am ET

I am not surprised with this corruption, I have children who live in Illinois and have heard their comments, I think it would be wonderful if every corrupted polition was ran out of the office they hold, lets not stop with just removing them from office, but, get them out of our country, let them do their dirt in another country, we do not want them.
Betty

Looking for Truth   December 9th, 2008 10:01 am ET

Typical for the Democrats in Illinois

Godluvr   December 9th, 2008 10:00 am ET

WHAT?

henry   December 9th, 2008 10:00 am ET

why not! it's now part of the job to have a prison term with your elected term-I think a sentence of death for crimes like this would bring this to a stop-but since that will never happen we will remain the suckers of the elite who control this land. Don't fool yourself these people could care less about you after you vote and care about you just before you vote-in between it's greed, power and corruption. Not the blue print they had in mind back in 1776

Jenn   December 9th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Another crooked Dem busted that all you liberals will defend

The Dawg   December 9th, 2008 9:56 am ET

But I thought it was only Republicans who were corrupt...you know the whole "Culture of Corruption" tagline that the Dems ran on. Hmmm...must be a mistake or some vast right wing conspiracy.

BB   December 9th, 2008 9:56 am ET

If he's guilty, throw the book at him. If he isn't guity, start another witch-hunt against someone else.

Mike   December 9th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Welcome to Chicago. Now get prepared as Chicago moves to Washington.
