Clinton met with Rice Tuesday.

(CNN) - The State Department is staying mum when it comes to the details of Sen. Hillary Clinton's private dinner with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Monday night.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the two met for two hours at Rice's Watergate apartment in downtown Washington, and discussed a range of issues.

"They talked just very generally about policy – the challenges, the opportunities, talked a little bit about the job of secretary of state; talked about the quote-unquote 'building' here – managing a big operation," McCormack said.

But McCormack declined to get into specifics, saying instead he expects Clinton and Rice to hold several more meetings.

Two great women. Thank you Condi for being such a graceful lady, you can always tell a strong woman, when she is not in any way intimidated by another strong woman. These two women gives me hope for the future of my daughters, not your regular low self-esteem female bashers.

God Help This Country with this Old Has been as Secretary of State, She is a Mean Vindictive, Negative Person with the Personality of a Dead Fish.. I Hope and Prays she screws up Royally, and we get a New Secretary of State... She is MORE of the Same... Bad News for this Country as far as foreign Policy goes... Granforchange in Wisconsin

Proud American in a Big City   December 9th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Condi lives in Watergate... The irony just bowls me over.

GOPS lost, get it!   December 9th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Hillary is going to be great! I just hope the Republicans who are still out there spinning lies (in my local newspaper, for one) will give this administration a chance. Just what are they afraid of? A return to the rule of law? Respect for every citizen? Respect for our enemies? A return to a fair tax system instead of Bush's phony cuts? Jobs? Respectability? Truth?
So far, I see noting wrong with any of that!!!

Proud to be American   December 9th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Great Clinton will get first hand what she is getting into ;0)..... knowledge is power

Richard Neffson   December 9th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Let's hope that Hillary Clinton can do a better job managing the State Department than she did her presidential campaign. If Barack Obama is smart he will carefully screen who Hillary has working under her since she demonstrated very poor judgment in who she picked to help run her presidential campaign.

Ms. B in California   December 9th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I bet Hilliary felt sorry for Condoleezza. Working for that idiot and being the only one with a sound mind.

JIM...TX   December 9th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Ever notice that in every picture of Hillary since the election she wears a scowl. She appears to be a very unhappy person.

obama-mama   December 9th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

It's great that they can get together. I know Rice cannot wait to get GW thumb off her head.

Not Amused   December 9th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Yeah, I'm sure the two of them had a real good _itch to _itch, tete a tete.

As Secretary of State, Senator Clinton will strengthen and renew alliances with our allies. She will rebuild the image of the United States on the world stage.

Reversing the failures of the current WAR CRIMINAL REPUBLICAN Administration will be difficult, but Senator Clinton is up for the job.
T
hank God McCain/Palin were defeated. The world rejoiced.

Ernie   December 9th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

I think that Clinton will take a much larger role as SOS than Rice. Clinton will be more aggresive and a "doer".

Ryan   December 9th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

I think Hillary will be an excellent Secretary of State but the fact that Rice thinks so too throws a red flag.

Sharon Kitchen   December 9th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

to have been a fly on that wall.........................................

Get over it   December 9th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Hillary looks troubled in that picture.

I guess that Condoleezza openned her eyes to a few things.

At least the intellegence agencies are in better shape for Hillary than they were for Bush when he took office anfter Bill was through downsizing them.

karen-phoenix   December 9th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Read "Audacity of Hope" and you will realize Hillary will be the best for Obama's vision for America's future!!! REDO our image and the world wants our image redone!!! God Bless the Obama team!!! AND I've been a republican for over 40 years but no more!!!

lonnette33   December 9th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

I love you Hillary. You don't need advice from Rice. You're going to do just fine. I'm sure you were being polite in accepting her inviation to dinner.

bertha doucet   December 9th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Rice already stated that hillary clinton would be a terrific seretary of state.I wish the best for hillary clinton in her new job!!!! Houston Tex!!!

Godluvr   December 9th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Super! Sec. Rice can advise her on what not to do, and what doesn't work! I think Rice voted for P-E Obama!

MattZ   December 9th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

The picture kind of makes her look like a Sith dark lord, or, at the very least, some kind of evil empiress.

This is good and the public don't need to know everything.
Thanks to you Secretary Rice and prayers and blessings for Secretary Clinton

Virginia   December 9th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Well, at least Clinton knows where to go to get "trained" in her possible new position. She would do well to spend a good bit of her time with Condie...

Tom in Delaware   December 9th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

I wonder if they traded stories about landing at airports under hostile conditions

Hillary could recount the terror she experienced at Sarajevo, and Condi could match that with tales about touching down in New York City.

carson   December 9th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

excellent !

Farrell, Houston, Tx   December 9th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

I couldn't believe my ears were hearing right when Rice said she takes responsibility for Bush's blundering errors of Iraq. Rice has sold her soul to the devil when Bush or Cheney have never taken any responsibility or apologized for their errors or is this her way of getting Bush to speak up. I pray that Hillary will serve the America people honorably and we expect the same from Obama. No more coverups, lies and incompetence.

ch   December 9th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Hillary will be a great Sec. Of State – how grand of her to accept this job.

How grand of her to support Obama and not to take the nonimation fight to the convention when she had every right to (Teddy Kennedy did it in 1980 with WAY fewer votes and WAY fewer delegates than Hillary had).

How grand of her to raise $10 million for Obama and campaign all over the country on his behalf.

Hillary Clinton is the cream of the crop.

ran   December 9th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

The only thing Rice can show HC is how not to be an effective SOS. Rice like Bush will go down as the worst we have had in either position. Rice was a mistake from NSA to SOS.

American View   December 9th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Hope Hill takes some notes!

proudliberal   December 9th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

neither one are qualified for sos.

No Hillary = No Obama   December 9th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Did they talk about Rice being tried as a war criminal?

Al   December 9th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

The tasks of a Secretary of State are political in nature. Neither Rice or Powell fought for high political office. It is for that reason Senator Clinton will outshine both of them. Clinton has been steeled in the fires of political office and it will show in her work..

rachel   December 9th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Good lets get to work.

LIP   December 9th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Two incredibly talented and popular people meeting to discuss transition. All politics aside, they will be fruitful meetings. I hope that this is not the end of Ms. Rice working for the good of the people.
Remember that George W. Bush brought us the first real diversity when it came to ethnic appointments. No one before Bush did anything remotely close and it already appears that with Obama's appointments, he will not approach the same level of diversity.

Experience   December 9th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Does Clinton have the right expierence, as a first lady? Colin Powell would have made a better secretary of state.

BB   December 9th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Watergate? Rice lives at Watergate? I don't think I would want to live there. Too much history – bad history. But then, I'm not Sec'y of State.

Candy West Virginia   December 9th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

I sure hope Obama and Clinton can help repair the damage done by bush & co.

BS not Maverick   December 9th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Clinton & Rice, the Sanfancisco treat!

Sherrol in Canada   December 9th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

The world will now pay even more attention to goings on within the State Dept. Ms Rice is way too reserved and boring – an ice queen.

Hillary is more extroverted, personable and approachable. She makes you want to listen to her, you sit up and take notice.

JOANIS TAYLOR (JT)   December 9th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

It's a woman thing!
