Inauguration Day fashion

Obama will reportedly be wearing a tuxedo from suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx.
Obama will reportedly be wearing a tuxedo from suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx.

(CNN) – The presidential inauguration party tops the list of formal affairs next January, and President-elect Barack Obama is rumored to be preparing for his big event: He’s believed to have ordered a simple and classic black tuxedo by the union-friendly suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx, a stylist to which the president-elect is said to be faithful, according to the Los Angeles Times.

But most likely all eyes will be on the future first lady’s outfit. So, what will Michelle Obama wear on her husband’s big day?

Women’s Wear Daily is featuring sketches by high-profile designers on its Web site of possible Inauguration Day outfits for Mrs. Obama and among the contenders are simple and classic designer Nicole Miller, the elegant and timeless Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, and the funky and youthful California-based fashionista Betsey Johnson.

And the Obama girls were not forgotten. The Web site features drawings of potential outfits for Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, from dressy skirted coats to children’s gowns.

Mrs. Obama, who is often compared to former first lady and style icon Jackie Kennedy, took some heat for her election night attire as she donned an attention-grabbing red and black Narciso Rodriguez shift dress.
The future first lady has said she often sports modestly priced labels like J.Crew and Donna Rico, and favors local Chicago designer Maria Pinto. But Inauguration Day could call for a pricier piece, and fashion’s elite are prepared. Whatever the future first lady decides for Inauguration Day, the fashion world will surely be watching.

Where's the outrage over the hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars that will be spent by Obama? I mean, Palin spent $150,000 and she was almost crucified. In these tough economic times, is an Inauguration Gala really the best place to spend my money?

The girls and BO will look fine in whatever they wear but as for Michelle – you can't make a silk purse ...! :)

Since this outfit will ultimately be enshrined like all the other First Lady inaugural gowns, why shouldn't she go "all out." It would be ridiculously to expect anything less. Maybe she can sport that $30,000 ring (Drudge propaganda) along with the dress. :O

Try to wear something that doesn't accentuate your huge backside-so far not a single dress I have seen you in has done you much justice style–wise. And I agree with Sherrol in Canada–don't dress your children too old–they are after all, little girls.

Regardless of what she wears on inauguration day , Michelle Obama is as ugly as home made soap and no designer dress is going to fix it. Being as she's built like a man, perhaps she should look into nice suit.

Wow, our economy is in peril and our people are sufferring, some losing the roof over their heads, and our future first lady is thinking of which expensive gown to where! Governor of Illinois was arrested today and don't forget that our President elect goes to Washington with the same set of Chicago Politics rules! God help this country!

Sorry, but I can design better outfits than those! It's the Inaugural Ball; not a church banquet (no disrespect to the Church)! Please tell them "thanks, but no thanks!"

I think Michelle would look nice in the Isaac Mizrahi, the Marc Jacobs yellow, the Royal Blue Michael Kors, The cream Rachel Roy, The off shoulder elie Tahari, The off shoulder Nicole Miller for evening and during the day I like the Badgley Mischka. For the girls I like the Bonnie young sketch.

BTW I'm actualy one of the few who thought the dress looked nice. it definantly isn't a dress for TV, but on print and actualy seeing the dress in person it was quite beautiful!

Really now, does Mrs. Obama need bloggers to tell her what to wear? She's married to the President-Elect of the USA, the 2nd most powerful man in the world. (Bush is still around). Whatever she wears will be fabulous. She hasn't picked a designer and the bloggers are already critical.
