Inauguration Day fashion

Obama will reportedly be wearing a tuxedo from suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx.
Obama will reportedly be wearing a tuxedo from suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx.

(CNN) – The presidential inauguration party tops the list of formal affairs next January, and President-elect Barack Obama is rumored to be preparing for his big event: He’s believed to have ordered a simple and classic black tuxedo by the union-friendly suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx, a stylist to which the president-elect is said to be faithful, according to the Los Angeles Times.

But most likely all eyes will be on the future first lady’s outfit. So, what will Michelle Obama wear on her husband’s big day?

Women’s Wear Daily is featuring sketches by high-profile designers on its Web site of possible Inauguration Day outfits for Mrs. Obama and among the contenders are simple and classic designer Nicole Miller, the elegant and timeless Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, and the funky and youthful California-based fashionista Betsey Johnson.

And the Obama girls were not forgotten. The Web site features drawings of potential outfits for Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, from dressy skirted coats to children’s gowns.

Mrs. Obama, who is often compared to former first lady and style icon Jackie Kennedy, took some heat for her election night attire as she donned an attention-grabbing red and black Narciso Rodriguez shift dress.
The future first lady has said she often sports modestly priced labels like J.Crew and Donna Rico, and favors local Chicago designer Maria Pinto. But Inauguration Day could call for a pricier piece, and fashion’s elite are prepared. Whatever the future first lady decides for Inauguration Day, the fashion world will surely be watching.

I hate to say it but it's going to take a hell of an outfit to make Michelle Obama look good. She going to have to start on that face than make her way down.

Michelle is quite a big woman, so I hope the designer takes those shoulders, hips and legs into consideration. And that drawing of Mrs. Obama does make her a bit svelte, which she definitely isn't.
And "Frank" you are right. With the country going to hell in a handbasket, I might stick with a 50% off at the Nordstrom Rack and call it good...............

To Laura, I don't know haow old you are but you can read so I suggest you go to the libary or internet and research the presidental terms of the Clinton Administration, the Carter administratio and see for your self that all the mess we have now is derived from all the poor mismanagament and cover ups our current President Bush inherited. There is no way any Rebublican president can FIX the mess the Democratic president left because of all the crooks and cover ups created by them while they were in ioffice. It would take a lot of years to even weed through all the mess. If Obama does not succed in Fixing all the mess he will inherit then will his people turn on him too? Just look at the crooks in Illinois governent. I hope for all our sakes Obama does succed in turing out country around but first he has to have good people around him to give him good advise or he will not be able to stand up to the pressure now will is family. I hope for all of us he does succed but it will take all of us unitied for a common cause.

She has nowhere to go but up form that dreadful dress she wore on Election night! I am big Obama supporter but that dress was just butt ugly!
I was shocked she would wear something that awful. However told her is was a good decision to wear that dress was not a friend. I would never let anyone I care about go out in public, especially for such a major event, in something so dreadful.
    Sorry Michelle...it was really bad!
Of, the Obama's pay for their own cloths you fools!

To JJ – Michelle is her own person and should stick to what makes her comfortable. She is not a teenager that is going to adapt to Condi Rice and Oprah's way of dressing. I think she is fine. She is down to earth and dresses for the occasion. She is not about putting on any airs....That's what I love about my new First Lady....She is her own woman. Leader, not follower.

Some of the comments on this post are very disturbing. Michelle is an intelligent, lovely woman, and it doesn't matter what she looks like (although she is very beautiful in real life). I realize that American society is obessed with looks, weight, etc., but I'm proud of Michelle for being herself. She dresses modestly, unlike Cindy McCain, and I can relate more to that than someone who spends $300,000 on jewelry to wear for the RNC.

Michelle is a great role model for inspiring American women of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities to be themselves.

I have come to the conclusion that a large number of bloggers on this site have no brain – for example – discussing the gowns that Michelle might be wearing on January 20th- Do they understand that a gown is worn at the balls that evening?

Yeah, the outfit she wore that night was "ugly" enough to detract from everything else, and when you think that this is the picture that would go down in history on one of the most historic nights – boy, don't you wish that this picture could be taken back? Now it will remain there forever! BTW, who was the advisor who agreed to this one outfit? Time to let go of this designer too – he who is unable to lay out the WHOLE picture in context, does not deserve to design for others on huge occasions; after all this is not the Oscars or Emmys when "freako" is hip!

The idea that you are a "hater" if you don't like Obama is just as dumb as many of Obama's supporters. It's easily possible to dislike Obama without hating him. Sorry if I'm going too fast for some of you.

    Let me go slower:

It's easy to dislike someone, or something, without "hating". Dumbest popular expression ever.

How much are they spending? C'mon – we want to know – it better not be a lot – huh? How much? Let us know! We want to know. We had to be told all about Sarah Palin's outfits – c'mon – who is buying them? Where is the money coming from? We're in a RECESSION. WE WANT TO KNOW! WE NEED TO KNOW! Give it up! Give it up! HOW MUCH???????????????????????????

Lost in Texas FOREVER: grow up and face the real world. I had hoped you woulkd get my point in that all the grip about Sarah Palin was just hate fill bitter words against a person no one knew about until she came on the scene as a VP candidate. It just goes to show that most people like this one is only a surface person, never seeing the truth of what was read. If the media can step on and crush one person why is it fair to have those same people uplift one more fortunate. Besides that Obama is well off from all the money he aquired from the Freddia mac and fannie mae financial dister befoer anyone knew about their proble so sure he has the money but all the hipe about Gov Saha Palin makes me think our country is in true distress. We may be headed for the failure of our country as we know it.

Michelle and those girls are so beautiful! But summer dresses, in January, in Washington D.C.? It makes me cold to think about it. I hope the dresses come with very warm wraps.

It's odd that no one is as upset about the designer attire the Obama's will be wearing. All we heard was Sarah Palin omg, wearing all those expensive clothes, burn her at the stake!! lol..Now not a peep about the Obama's , just how cute they will look.

We have no royalty in this country. Let them dress as they can afford to dress, wearing the clothes of citizens, not nobility.

You people really make my head hurt.

About the coats? These dresses are for the BALL...not the swearing in, which will be OUTSIDE. The ball/dance will be indoors, so coats won't be needed.

And I'm pretty sure that Michelle will make sure the girls are warm whilst outside watching their Dad be sworn in as our next President.

    Use your heads, people...geeeeez
