Inauguration Day fashion

Obama will reportedly be wearing a tuxedo from suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx.
Obama will reportedly be wearing a tuxedo from suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx.

(CNN) – The presidential inauguration party tops the list of formal affairs next January, and President-elect Barack Obama is rumored to be preparing for his big event: He’s believed to have ordered a simple and classic black tuxedo by the union-friendly suburban Illinois-designer Hart Schaffner Marx, a stylist to which the president-elect is said to be faithful, according to the Los Angeles Times.

But most likely all eyes will be on the future first lady’s outfit. So, what will Michelle Obama wear on her husband’s big day?

Women’s Wear Daily is featuring sketches by high-profile designers on its Web site of possible Inauguration Day outfits for Mrs. Obama and among the contenders are simple and classic designer Nicole Miller, the elegant and timeless Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, and the funky and youthful California-based fashionista Betsey Johnson.

And the Obama girls were not forgotten. The Web site features drawings of potential outfits for Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, from dressy skirted coats to children’s gowns.

Mrs. Obama, who is often compared to former first lady and style icon Jackie Kennedy, took some heat for her election night attire as she donned an attention-grabbing red and black Narciso Rodriguez shift dress.
The future first lady has said she often sports modestly priced labels like J.Crew and Donna Rico, and favors local Chicago designer Maria Pinto. But Inauguration Day could call for a pricier piece, and fashion’s elite are prepared. Whatever the future first lady decides for Inauguration Day, the fashion world will surely be watching.

Most of you folks need to get a life.

If everyone was as concerned about "frivolous" spending all the time for everyone, we wouldn't have an economic crisis at all. The inauguration is a drop in the ocean compared to the gratuitous spending on unnecessary items that we all are guilty of. Get some perspective.

I like the choice of union friendly, American made Hart-Shaffner-Marx for the tux. The little girls always look wonderful and it looks like Michelle will have several beautiful designs to choose from.

It's too bad that we have to hear from the sour grapes brigade.

As far as what Michelle can wear.....She can actually wear a suit as when she has a dress on she looks like a man in a dress....Come on this woman is not feminine looking at all. ....She needs a total makeover, but not sure that can help.....Yes, she could ask Oprah for a dress to borrow, or better yet a moo-moo as that would be best.

How can anyone compare her to Jackie O in the same breath. Jackie must be spinning in her grave.

Ryan from New Mexico, Get a grip. You do realize the tux is for the ball and NOT the inauguration ceremony? Where have YOU been? Geez!

A tux for the parties is standard. As President, he'll need one, and a Hart Schaffner Marx tux is a mid-range suit that'll work well. They're well made. Essentially the Honda of the suit world – nothing snazzy but good to have. HSM was my first suit out of college in 1992. I bought it at Macys.

What I can't figure out is how anyone can be as angry and outraged as half the people in these comments. Folks! Take a pill! Most people spent more on a television than he's spending on this tux.

I am SICK of CNN constantly comparing the ugly, horribly dressed, out of shape figured Michelle to a fashion icon such as Jackie Kennedy. There is no way in hell that woman can be compared with a person so fashionable as Jackie!! Jackie was pure fashion in everything she did, said, dressed, walked, talked – you name it. Michelle is NOT nor can she keep her foot out of her mouth. It has gone on record that Jackie NEVER made a fashion mistake – Michelle has made many and is not even in the white house (how that thought saddens me). Post this CNN – its the truth and you know it!

Distinctions matter. I'll give you one guess who is paying for the Obama family's clothes. Yes, the Obama family. Idiot.

Whatever choice Michelle makes for herself and the girls, I doubt the total for all the Obamas clothing for this event won't come close to the bucks the RNC spent trying to dress up Caribou Barbie; what was the most recent total, $180,000???
I'm surprised that the RNC/GOP isn't trying to get a piece of the bailout pie.

  11. It's a grand affair!

For all of you haters, I will bet your last dollar that Michelle dosen't give a hoot about what you think, and I'm sure she sleeps just fine at night. What a waste of your negative energy. If you can't say something positive, then choke on a bugger!

You go Obama!!! All of you haters need to get over it. The man was elected; so be it!!! You are just wasting your time and ours by posting that mess.

Let Michelle wear whatever she wants. She is going to be our First Lady. I don't think we had anyother to say about other First Ladies.

Folks, the clothes are usually given away for free because the designers get quite a marketing boon if the First Lady wears their dress. Of course, if it wasn't that, you'd find some other insignificant triviality to complain about because of what they did to 'poor Sarah Palin'. Besides, with his books becoming best sellers last year, Obama made $4.7 million and he can afford to pamper his family just a little bit.

Hmmm...a hypocrite calling someone a hypocrite? How wonderfully ironic AND hypocritical! Just a suggestion, but why don't you worry about your precious neocons and their $10B per month war agenda before you ever ever ever open your mouth about who spends what on what ever again.

I am willing to bet that the same folks here posting negative stuff and complaining about the Obama inuaguration outfits are the same ones that complained about....

The school they picked for the girls to attend
The talk about getting a puppy for the girls
The choices he is making for his team
The fact that he won the election
and even when he gave Biden a cupcake with a birthday candle in it!

In other words we all know that you'll NEVER accept him as president, didn't vote for him, and will be bitter the next 4 to 8 years even if he does make life better for you. No since in saying "get over it" because I'm sure you never will.

To Tina and the 'lipstick on a pig' comment as well as all you other bitter, jealous idiots.......

while you are stuck in your broken down trailer park homes, trying to make ends meet working you minimum wage jobs – too lazy to do anything but criticize and spew your moronic comments.......know this –
The Obamas are the closet thing to a real family that Americans have had to look up to since JFK and for the first time in a long time America now can be taken seriously on a world wide level and be respected.......so put your pettiness aside and stop the hating.

My guess is the Obamas will dress tastefully but not extravagantly and Michelle will be as beautiful as she has been all year. And ... news flash ... they will pay for it themselves! Although he's not rich, a Senator earns around $160,000, and the Obamas can afford to spend three or four thousand dollars for a once-in-a-lifetime event as important as this one.

To Hi Haters: Are you kidding? Hate has nothing to do with Michelle Obama's lack of intelligence, lack of taste, and lack of American pride.
Lets see what was that remark during the campaign. I am finally proud to be an American? Something like that. We as Americans should be outraged that this election took the road it did. Change, yes there will be change, but I don't think an inexperienced president elect will be able to do it. I know all of the blacks in america are proud right now. I don't have a problem with a black president, I just wanted an intelligent one with a great first lady. WE DIDN"T GET THAT.

Some of you are seriously disengaged from life–The article is simply telling us what our next President will be wearing on a very historical day and a great many of you take the time to say such barraging comments..Just take it for what it is, spend your time more wisely–The gratification you get from putting him and Michelle is short-lived but your stupidity is on the contrary...

Those of yo ucriticizing Michelle are ridiculous. I mean seriously, look at Jacky O and what she made famous...yeah...that hideous pink monstrosity that is the iconic template for First lady attire. Just be thankful she's not wearing that.
