CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Hours after federal investigators announced they had arrested Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff on corruption charges, U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald declared Tuesday a "sad day for government."
"Gov. Blagojevich has taken us to a new low," he said. "This conduct would make Lincoln roll over in his grave."
Fitzgerald said the government had bugged the governor's campaign office and placed a tap on his home phone.

Sounds like this guy has been corrupt for a really long time. How long has he been in office and why is this the first we're hearing of it?
Illinois governors don't seem to have a very moral reputation, do they?
It doesn't matter if they're democrat or republican – most politicians are corrupt in one way or another. The list of pols being incriminated in illegal activities goes on and on and on....
What's the surprise here? I am originally from Illinois. It is well known that Illinois has the very best government that money can buy.

It is interesting that the US attorney that couldn't competently track down and prosecute the treasonous behavior in the Bush administration is now calling the typical slimey corruption we unfortunately see all-to-often in politicians a "new low". Oh really? Trying to sell-off a senate seat is indeed pretty pathetic, but is it lower than endangering the lives of our CIA agents by outing them? At the very least, where was all this accusatory and disdainful rhetoric when he was pursuing the criminals in the white house?

Shouldn't Fitz say instead that "this _alleged_ conduct would make Lincoln roll over in his grave"? Even for the rather obviously guilty in Chiacgo, there are ethical limits on pretrial prosecutorial statements.

He's a democrat. But in Chicago, it really doesn't matter. The republican he replaced is in jail for corruption charges too.
It's too bad the dysfunctional and illegitimate Republican party in Illinois doesn't even have a viable candidate to put foward for Governor or U.S. Senator.
