Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is accused of scheming to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder.
Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is accused of scheming to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Illinois state politics read more like a script from "The Sopranos" than a page out of the history books.

On Tuesday, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat, and his chief of staff, John Harris, were arrested on federal corruption charges involving an alleged pay-for-play scheme to award Barack Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder - among other accusations.

Each was charged with a count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and a count of solicitation of bribery, authorities said. If convicted, the two could spend a maximum of 30 years in prison.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald called Blagojevich's actions a "political crime spree" and said his behavior would make Abraham Lincoln "roll over in his grave."

Lincoln, after all, is one of the state's most famous figures, having served as a congressman and later as president.

The FBI special agent in charge of the case, Robert Grant, went so far as to say that "if [Illinois] isn't the most corrupt state in the United States, it's certainly one hell of a competitor." Video Watch more on the complaints against the Illinois governor »

But accusations of corruption like those against Blagojevich are nothing new to Illinois.

"Corruption is in the DNA of this state," said CNN contributor and Chicago resident Roland Martin. "The voters in this state, when I talk to people, since I have been here, they're pretty much like, 'You know what? This is what we expect.' "

To answer your question about Jesse Jackson Jr.

You are right PaPa has played these games for years but Jackson Jr. is not like his father. He often publicly disagrees with his dad. Don't equate one with the other. Junior is a good man fighting for the right things.
Pa Pa on the other hand makes me sick. Probably the most pathetic thing I've see in political history is the same man who said he'd like to cut off Obama's nuts just months before, stareing into the camera crying because Obama won the election. It was soooooo fake and pathetic.

why is that Gov. Blagojevich can post a bond for $4,500 dollars after everything the prosecutor stated on TV, and have on wiretaps, but an NFL football player who accidentally shot himself, has to pay a bond of $50,000 dollars. can anyone on here explain that to me? Shouldn't it be the opposite? CNN please post my comment?

Interesting how CNN only allowed a few comments on the "Jackson as candidate 5" article. Could be they're afraid of his father, who's been at the pay to play game his whole career? The father threatens corporations to "donate" to his foundation or the pickets will appear crying racism. In politics it's called pay to play, in real life it's called extortion. I wonder if the son has learned at the feet of the father?

To Daniel Cabrera,
Did you think Sara Palin was a crook when Ted Stevens was convicted of his felonies, and what about the Slitzer case does that mean Hillary was corrupt because of him. There are crooked politicians everywhere and they and they alone are responsible for their decisionsn, not the President Elect, not the call girl, not the people who gave them money. It is time we hold people accountable for their own actions and quit trying to blame someone else.

The only thing Obama and this dumb*** have in common are they both come from Illinois. But of course the idiots will come out of the woodwork with OH LOOK, THEY ARE FROM THE SAME STATE SO THEY MUST BE IN ON THIS TOGETHER bull****! Just like they idiots trying to claim he is not a citizen! Give it up people!!! Bush had the lowest approval rating in HISTORY!! IN HISTORY!!!!!! Stupid is, as stupid does. Lock him up; throw away the key; and move on. He is not worth the trouble to even comment on. And by the way; tell the Republicans to stop salivating every time they think that there is a way to tie Barack Obama to any/every scandel that comes down the pipe. It only makes them seem more desperate/ pathetic than they have already managed to create for themselves as a public image!

Zoe   December 10th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

Blagojevich has already been tried and convicted in the press it seems. He had just shown support for striking workers, stopped business as usual with the BOA. The timing of his arrest is odd, so close to his support of the workers and the upcoming inaugeration.
What about innocent until proven guilty?

Janice   December 10th, 2008 8:55 pm ET

The Republican party, still seething from the election, have been circling like buzzards looking to pick at something corrupt they think PE Obama may be involved in.

Joe the Troll   December 10th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Hey, Daniel Cabrera –

Are you this eager to blame Bush for the Tom Delay scandal? They're both from Texas.

How about Sarah Palin? She is just as guilty as fellow Alaskan Ted Stevens, isn't she?

Isn't she?

Joyce   December 10th, 2008 8:51 pm ET

C'mon, people! What a cynical bunch you all are. Yes, Blagojevich got caught– GREAT! Yes, Illinois has had more than its share of dishonest politicians. But, that does not mean that everybody in or from Illinois is a crook! Stop and think: Fitzgerald has been actively investigating Blagojevich for five years. He acted quickly this week before Blagovich could appoint a US Senator. Do you not think that if during these past five years he had found Obama was involved in all of Illinois' problems, he would not have acted quickly prior to the election?!

I personally am disgusted with all those who are trying to get some of this mess to spread to Obama. There is not any indication that it does, so ease up. Give the man a fair chance!!! What is that old adage? Innocent until proven guilty.

No Hillary = No Obama   December 10th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

It is my wish that Chicago form their own state so they can keep the dirt up there. We have a lot of decent hard working God fearing people in our state and I am tired of the mockery cast on us because the politicians think they are above the law. Perhaps Blagojevich can find a cell right next to the last crook, George Ryan.

Campbell Brown does not now or ever offer objective comments regarding key issues. Her bias reference in suggesting that President Elect Obama was aware of the criminal activity of Governor Blagojevich is absurd. Her program is not predicated on objective journalism, but rather on her slanted disgraceful opinions.

Is this CNN or the National Enquirer? Quite frankly, she does CNN an injustice based on her coverage of very important issues. She is BIAS and FULL OF BULL!!!

Brown needs to be replaced in order to maintain the credibility of CNN.

Carl Justus   December 10th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Lincoln must have been first honest man in Ilinois and Dirkson must have been the last.

It must be the water in the state that makes them a little on the wild side and maybe a little greedy at least in my opinion and what is in the so called news or from the media.
It seems that every four years or so we have another governor or some in politics idicted for something other that doing his job in an honest forthright fashion.

Lolita   December 10th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

I think the media and rep. are just trying to find any little "LIE" in order to destroy Obama. But I pray these tricks do not work, in my opinion there are a lot of more important things that need to be focused on at this time. America has spoken Obama is our next president...I believe that it is time for all those people who don’t agree to move on with their lives and STOP trying to bring down our leader and instead left him up and stand behind him! FOR SOME REASON IT WASN'T HARD FOR MANY TO STAND BEHIND BUSH AND HIS STUPIDITY. SO I think we should give Obama a fair chance and get ready for the next four years and leave the crap behind us not just individually but as a NATION together and NOT divided!

Now to the pitiful nonsense posted here by laughable and uninformed mindless idiots like Daniel in IN, I guess someone has to take a shovel of reality and hit you over your thick head with it, all you're doing is making a fool of yourself. The right wingers are actively foaming at the mouth over this one but some appear more delusional than others.

Can you imagine if this had come out 2 months ago? We might have a different president coming online in January. I have to confess that – even though I support Obama – having grown up in the Chicago area, I was raised on the "Dailey Machine" and corrupt aldermen and precinct politics, and I immediatley wondered "what he knew and when he knew it". Obama must immediately distance himself from any of this. If he knew anything of this, he must speak right now, not through spokespeople. The worst political reaction to scandal – even just the suggestion of it – is no reaction.

Penn Voter   December 10th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Well, time will tell.Reality check:- it looks that with Obama at helm of this nation, all is going to be WORST!

Remember that Obama is a TROJAN HORSE FACTOR FOR THE DESTRUCION OF OUR COUNTRY.
Of course you still do not want to deal with that one, right?

So, here we have it! CORRUPTION,CORRUPTION,CORRUPTION!!!

It will not take for surprise when US attorney Patrick Fitzgerald contInues the investigation ( unless the Obama machinery find the way to stop it) that some people start talking- ’singing’,- saying things about all the wrong and nasty practices in the dark corrupted Chicago-Illinois political atmosphere, from where Obama is product, and AS RESULT, the president elect Obama gets blown away by a nasty past.

Of course, the media is there to attempt to soft and mufflle everything. They will even sell their soul to who knows what in order to make him appears(Obama) like a nice straight/all virtue, capable guy deserving presidency,…out of all wrong doing,… completely away form the CORRUPTION in Washington, the financial spoectrum,… away from THIEVES, CROOKS, TERRORIST, ALL KIND OF NASTY INDIVIDUALS like: Raines, Johnson, O’Neal,Cox, Dood,Soros,Pelosi,Reid,Frank,Wright,Ayers,Alinsky, and others weeds.

However, one day, the truth will be revealed,…how soon? let’s just wait on that one, ok?

In the mean time, think in the direction our beloved country is getting into, thanks to all the brainless voters responsible for this to happens. It seems that this country is overloaded with COCOZOIDS!

There is definitely something wrong with state constitutions if governors can exonerate themselves (as a Republican, Palin, did in Alaska over troopergate) or if a governor is corrupt but can still exercise power from within prison (as in this case for a Democrat from Illinois). That a governor so accused–not of some paltry sum for bribery, but for actively seeking to sell a senate seat for money–can continue to be governor is really shameless and absurd–on his part an on the part of the state of which he is a member.

If Blagojevich won't step aside gracefully, the Ilinois legislature should think about impeaching him. He's crooked and has shown he can't be trusted. In any case, I hope they lock him up and toss the key.

I guess Character does matter

What did President-Designate Obama know and when did he know it?

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   December 10th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

If this is no surprise to the voters, why do they go along with it!

It is beginning to appear that the people of Iraq had more of a chance of getting rid of Saddam than the people of Illinois do of getting rid of their corrupt government.

BB   December 10th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Strip him of all power immediately and add impeachment to his awful legacy. That kind of stuff is disgusting.

CHICAGO – Home of the mob...what more you expect?

laura   December 10th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

You know the face says it all ... he does look like a crook

Alexa- Chicago, IL   December 10th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

Somehow some seem to forget that there are still decent and working politicians here.

Centrist   December 10th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Throw away the key. I hope they have better hairdressers where that crook is going.

Big Ed   December 10th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Sorry Gov., but it's time to go! Don't let the door hit ya where the dog shoulda bit ya!

Willy Brown   December 10th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Just your normal law breaking democrat.

Nimi from NY   December 10th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

Bush led us in to a phony war that has cost American people billions of dollars and thousands of lives, Osama Bin Laden is still on the loose and all the media care about is Blagojevich and corruption. Bush and his cronies are all walking around trying to rewrite their history and you guys are talking about corruption that has was monopolized for so long by the Bush Administration. If not for the public where was the outrage by the media about Bush and Karl Rove dodging aeverything they did by invoking executive privilege. I don't condone what the Illinois Governor did but please stop already. Let be tried and convicted in the court and not by the media.

Bill Samson   December 10th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

I thought the land of Lincoln was Kentucky????

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 10th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Thank you CNN, for FINALLY mentioning in an article that Blago is a Democrat.

LIP   December 10th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Politics as usual. I recall years back that someone in the news said that the Kennedy Patriarch once asked that the Chicago machine insure that his son John becomes President. Not sure if this was fact or fiction, but it says a lot about Illinois and what is considered to be normal.

andyb   December 10th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Blagojevich even looks like a dork. How'd he get to be Gov?

Sue   December 10th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Don't even TRY to tell me Mr. Obama didn't know what his political buddy was doing all of the years MR. OBAMA was running his state!!!!!
Liar, liar, pants on fire!!!! He is full of DENIAL – maybe he was still using cocaine all of the years he worked with his well known, contributor to his politics!!!

Rockford   December 10th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

It's going to be fun seeing who will be first to cut a deal... and bring it all down. Will it be the Gov himself, Rezko, or maybe Mrs. Blago... join us tomorrow as the world turns.

30 years in prison can be quite compelling...

Lot's of "Chicago Machine" cronies aren't sleeping well these days! LOL

Fenarkleman   December 10th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

What is Blagojevich hiding under his hair? Could be more bribes in there!
