Obama is now calling on Blagojevich to step down.

(CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama Wednesday joined calls for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign.

"The president-elect agrees with [Illinois] Lt. Governor Quinn and many others that under the current circumstances it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois," Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

On Tuesday Blagojevich was arrested on federal conspiracy charges. Prosecutors alleged in their complaint that Blagojevich pressured candidates to replace Obama in the Senate for campaign contributions and other benefits.

Gibbs said Obama also supported legislation that will be considered by Illinois lawmakers on Monday to authorize a special election to choose his successor.

Obama believes Illinois lawmakers should "put in place a process to select a new senator that will have the trust and confidence of the the people of Illinois," Gibbs said.

Why would Obama who has everything to lose risk getting involved in something so stupid? All you people who wish him ill should go wash your*** and read a Bible!

BM   December 11th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Everytime you sikcos try to tie Obama to a scandal, you are unsuccessful. It appears that everyone is trying a get rich scheme using the Popular, President-to-elect.
Apparently this governoe thought he was above the law. You sickcos can't understand that this man Obama is an ethical and honest human being,

I am sick and tired of Brown's Cutting through the Bull piece where she dares to insinuate that Obama is perhaps not being transparent enough. Why does he have to be responsible for everything that happens to corrupted politicians – is it just because he shared a room with them in a meeting or happens to know them? Brown: Your show is becoming more BULL than anything. Seriously, CNN – GET RID OF HER!!!!

I wouldnt be surprised if the Republicons were behind this to somehow link this to Obama they will stop at nothing.

Jude   December 10th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

As soon as Blago is knocked off HIS pedestal, how about we take CAMPBELL BROWN off hers!!!! Her show should be called, "MORE bias;MORE bull" By a Republican sympathizer. She has NEVER asked questions of Bush, Cheney or their criminals like she now asks daily of Obama. Her insinuations that Obama MUST somehow be involved in the crimes of Blagojevich are just obnoxious and are very politically motivated. If she wants to be on CNN, they should at least CLEARLY advertise her show as biased coverage!!!

Michael   December 10th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

The GOP (God Only Party) is soon to be extinct. Look where they've gotten us. When we had Clinton, the economy was great, now with Bush, it sucks. What happened to "fiscal conservatism" and "less government", Republicans?

Also, this kinda corruption happens to BOTH sides, Democrats AND Republicans, just ask Dick Cheney, Alberto Gonzalez and Bush himself.

Lori   December 10th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

I am so glad that the majority of Americans are smart enough to not listen to the Republicans try and connect Obama to this nonsense. The GOP forgets that Obama is too busy trying to clean up the mess that they made the last 8 years to be involved in this. Obama won by a landslide so get over it GOP! Let the uneducated Republicans try and smear Obama, they have nothing better to do.

P.S. Let's not forget Palin's, McCain's scandals, to name a few!!! Oh that's right- the GOP has selective morals. They forget McCain's marital infidelities but want to hang Clinton for his. Like I hear everyday- the GOP will soon be extinct. Thank God!

K   December 10th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Christine,
Your hoping the person elected from the actual most corrupt city outside of New Orleans is going to clean house and make everything right? I almost feel sorry for you and the others on here who are so naive. You all really did just start paying attention during this election cycle, didn't you? You are truly clueless...corruption doesn't just exist in the hands of Republicans dear...wake up, seriously!

Tim   December 10th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

At least we all agree that Obama should distance himself from these types of people. The only disagreement that republicans and democrats have is as to timing. It would have been nice to distance himself from these types of people early in the relationship. It's a pattern that repeats, i.e. Wright, Ayers and Rezko

No incumbents 2010   December 10th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

How can you even question the "Chosen Ones" dealings? Obama had nothing to do with any of this and even if he did, we would never know, because no one will do any investigative journalism. That would be pure racism!

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   December 10th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

To all the GOP out there: McCain had the Keating 5 and Palin had too ethics investigations on-going while she ran for VP! Pastor Huck has too many ethics investigations to list ...

Yes, this Illinois Governor is scum: he should be locked away, sentenced to 30 years of hard labor.

But notice the top Democrats are calling for his head: If he had been GOP, all you would hear from the GOP that "these attacks were politically motivated."

Only the foolish and those who are filled with hate, not too mention poor losers are trying to paint Obama with this brush: Isn't going to work – save your breath.

First, from reading your post – you did not vote for Obama, but nice try.

Second, Obama is not "dealing" with this scandal – he is not part of it, thus not "dealing" with it.

Go back and leave reality alone – go and listen to your Rush

mopy   December 10th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

One name Blago will not name, lest he fear his life: Daley

Melissa   December 10th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Obama did not support the governor when he ran in 2002, and the governor did not support Obama when he ran for the Senate. The governor is on tape cursing about Obama because Obama would not pay him to appoint his choice for the Senate. Supposedly Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel was the one who blew the whistle on Blagojevich. The US Attorney himself said that Obama was not implicated in the investigation.

And still people here believe that Obama is corrupt and/or had shady involvement in this foolishness. Just goes to show that people will believe what they want to believe.

Ironic, not suprising   December 10th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Obama's spokesman says "it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois" huh?

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about Obama....pretty hard to be an effective Senator when you spend your whole term running for another office, voting "present" at votes, and writing books.....itll be hard to be President when you have no governing experience and only the Democratic Congressional leaders and a bunch of celebrity crazed devoted "yes" men as advisors

I didn't vote for Bush, and I understand if you don't like his policies, but America goes and tries to "correct" the problem with Obama....what a joke...

tell me when he joins Blago in the resignation line

No leadership, No experience, NObama

Toni   December 10th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Think about this, all you people who want to tie President-Elect Obama to this scandal.

This Illinois governor (I'm not even going to try and spell his name) hated the Chicago Tribune because the paper kept doing exposes on him. This is the same paper which wholeheartedly endorsed Barack Obama, the only Democrat the paper has endorsed since its inception. Would the Tribune have endorsed President-Elect Obama if its editors had even thought Obama was connected at all with any scandals?

Ron   December 10th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Marc....sorry you have my vote for the dumbest person to blog today. You are a shamed you voted for Obama (I doubt if you actually did) because a politician in the US is corrupt. And NO – they should NOT be paid off for their waste of OUR taxpayers $$$ to rescue them from spending some of their PRIVATE dollars that are well hidden – probably in VERY secret holdings – while we pay them even MORE!!! Mr. Obama is disgusting to allow this betrayal of the people who he speaks "GOLDENLY" about – and even before being sworn in as our "saviour" president – is giving away the struggling peoples money to the CORPORATE RAIDERS. SHAME ON YOU MR. OBAMA!!! yOU ARE ALREADY SCREWING UP YOUR PROMISES TO help the country!!! PANTS ON FIRE!!!! Why don't you, along with them – ride bicycles!!!! Put your words in action – not your double talking excuses!!!

sandee in Portland   December 10th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

@marc.....right, you voted for Obama like I voted for Mickey Mouse LOL.

For all you non Obama fans, you all keep trying to make it sound like our PE is involved in all kinds of scandal. Sure, he's from Chicago, but that doesn't make him a liar or a crook. I'm sure that our FBI has investigated him to hell and back and if there was anything in his past that was crooked or unethical, we would have heard about it from the sources that are in the know which aren't you. You only know what rumors are flying around the net and through the right wing media.

So get over your Rezko, Ayers, unethical governors etc. There's not one politican out there that's been in office for more than 6 years that's not dishonest. That's why there should be term limits on these people so they aren't in office long enough to want to make it a monetary gain for themselves.

Jackie in Dallas   December 10th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Marc,

You seriously need to read the 76-page transcript of the wiretaping before you connect President Elect Obama with this scumbag. He repeatedly cursed Obama for basically not giving him the time of day. As in the five candidates that he was considering, there has been no connection linking any impropriety with the President Elect or the candidates with Blagojevich.

And if you don't think McCain wouldn't have brought his own baggage to the White House, I have two words for you: Keating Five. He is STILL friends with Keating, and still numbers a bunch of lobbyists for some pretty sticky subjects as both friends and contributors.

Lis   December 10th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

I moved out of Illinois because of the policitcal corruption in Chicago. I have always said "never trust a Chicago politician".... OOPS! We will have one as President in January. Stay tuned America......

Jackie in Dallas   December 10th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

John Galt, for the literarily challenged, is the main character of the novel "Atlas Shrugged" by author Ayn Rand. Her main theme in all of her books is, according to Wikipedia:

"Rand advocated rational individualism and laissez-faire capitalism, categorically rejecting socialism, altruism, and religion. Her ideas remain both influential and controversial."

What the context of the use of this literary reference is to the story can only be surmised, but I presume it's because the character of John Galt looks out only for himself, which Governor Blagojevich certainly is doing. However, there is a world of difference between "rational individualism" and corruption.

LLM from MD   December 10th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Why do you idiots think that the corrupt governor and Obama were friends. Don't follow the news. He said that he didn't like Obama because he wouldn't play ball. Please educate yourself before posting. If I wanted to read nonsense about unsubstantiated ramblings I would read my teenage sons emails.

Badger   December 10th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

I just want to say "THANK YOU" to Larry from Penn. People before you make comments trying to tie President Elect Obama to this jerk EDUCATE yourselfs. Heard the GOP ask about transparency from the Obama cabinet that anyone that has spoken with this jerk speak up. Maybe noone has spoken with the Gov. but if noone speaks up they will say that the cabinet is not being tranparent. Obama is going back on his word on transparecy. Give me a break people. Please Please Think!!!

JL   December 10th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

I heard on another station that Rham Emanuel was the guy who turned the Governor in for trying to sell the Senate seat.

Also, by the Governor's comments about how the PE wouldn't give him anything but appreciation shows Obama wasn't in on any of this.

Besides, I am unclear on exactly what charges are being brought against Blagojevich...Did he actually do something besides run his mouth? I'm not saying I am on his side, it's obvious he's corrupt. I just haven't heard the media say what hard evidence the FBI has or actual crimes committed. The only thing I have heard is a bunch of threats he made that never happened and some bad language, which last time I checked, isn't illegal. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Jerry   December 10th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

We have seen this movie before, tarnishing Obama with the scum bag Blegovich. They may have talked professionally but seriously doubt the involvement of the President-elect. Although, I do not know everything but Obama had been challenged before and came with a flying colors. There is NO PROOF whatsoever that Obama has anything to do with this. You know it and I know it so knock it off. You're only making yourselves look even more ridiculous than you already do (and that's quite an achievement!).

Scott   December 10th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

It doesn't hold water to try to connect Obama and Blago even on premise that they discussed the potential appointees because he is on tape saying that "they(The Obama Administration) wanted to give him nothing, but their thanks and gratitude." This clearly indicates that Obama had no part in any sort of bribery that would have transpired, those of you who consider this to be more than that are only putting your contempt for Obama and bitterness about Sarah and Jonny Mac losing on display.

Wait just a cotton-pickin minute!!!!! Some writers here are mad that Republicans might be connecting the dots and –possibly and potentially– tying this to Obama? What the heck do they think the Republicans have endured for the last eight years..... nothing but slime and innuendo from the left. Get over it, lefties..... one (more) of yours is corrupt. And there will be more, I guarantee it. If it leads back to Obama, in any way, shape, or form, then you'll have to suffer the same slings and arrows that you hurled in the past.

At this moment, I applaud Obama for calling for this slimeball's resignation. How about that? I've rarely heard anything similar from the left.

Pat Pa.   December 10th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Where do you people get your info from? Blago and Obama former friends?? GIVE ME A BREAK!! Blago helping Obama getting elected?? PLEASE, you have to be kidding! That would be giving WAY too much credit to Blago, and no credit to Obama. Obama didn't appoint Blago to governor. Blago didn't appoint Obama to the senate. Illinois voters did that, which is completely independent from each other. Quit trying to link the two together. Just because people work together does not make them close friends, and Obama has bigger issues to worry about than who is going to be appointed to senate, so stop acting like Obama has a hand in all of this. How many of your co-workers are you GOOD friends with? I got a Christmas card from the governor a few years back, should I be worried that people will think I'm in on this scandal too, because we're "good friends"?

By the way this monster governor is quoted on the tapes as saying that he "counted get anything from Obama" As far as I am concerned Obam is no more responsible for the idiot criminal governor than Sarah Palin is for Senator Bride Guy from Alaska. Whic is to say ZERO.

What people don't understand is that for him to resign while claiming innocence is impossible. And in Illinois, you don't resign until you're convicted. All he needs to do is call in enough markers or pressure enough equally guilty members of the legislature to avoid impeachment.

As to taking away his right to fill the senate seat and setting up a special election, who's going to decide who gets to be on the ballot. There's hardly time for a petition drive.

It suggests that the evidence is pretty overwhelming or he has personal knowledge of Blago's guilt. Either way, the bum has to go and this country better start making an effort to "clean up" all of politics and
the widespread individual and corporate corruption that abounds.

Johanna   December 10th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

SHAME   December 10th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Blago, no matter his party affiliation, MUST resign and cooperate with the investigation. I agree with PE Obama. What a disgrace. Not only corrupt, but based on the tapes, maybe a bit unbalanced. He called Obama an expletive because he couldn't get to him. And even his wife...in on the "play." My sentiments to the people of Illinois. Maybe this the beginning of reform (not as in maverick :)

As for those developing their own story lines out of this...you know, the Obama ties. Really? Just stop it...even Blago has not been found guilty yet. But I forget, for some of you ~ if Obama sneezes, he caused a tsunami. I love being an American. Only here would you be allowed to espouse your hatred to such level.

Obama has *not* been implicated in ANYTHING... in fact, the AG went so far as to say SPECIFICALLY that Obama was not involved in any way... and NO charges have been filed, or even SUGGESTED towards Obama.

I know that really upsets the Obama haters... but just because this moron was the Governor of Obama's home state, doesn't mean there is an immediate connection.

I grow really weary of you idiots who *think* you know what's going on, and post "just wait", and "why not investigate this" on these boards. If you KNOW something, why not post it? Or better yet... TAKE IT TO THE AUTHORITIES. Until then, you're just sore losers to me. GET OVER IT... Obama is your president elect... DEAL WITH IT.

When (and if) he solves the financial issues... will you be looking for something ELSE to blame on him? Get real, and give him the benefit of the doubt... half of us voters voted him in... don't disrepect our opinions just because it wasn't yours!

Whatever will be will be. Let the chips fall where they may and so on and so forth.
Obama is probably clean and if he isn't, he will probably shower tonight and call it good. I like the way he has moved to the center just like Bill Clinton did after running on a liberal agenda. I also like that he is going to reach across the aisle to work with the republicans to try to get things accomplished. I seem to recall Bush saying something similar, but the democrats had other ideas and once he was in office, used the filibuster to death to hamstring him whenever he attempted to accomplish something. Oh yes, and now Democrats say that he was unable to accomplish anything because he wouldn't reach across that proverbial aisle. Notice the Republicans can play that game also and will be filibustering this ridiculous auto scam Nancy and the boys are attempting to shove down the throats of the people that don't think the Big 3 should be bailed out.

Jason   December 10th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Well this is just the beginning folks. Maybe the American people are starting to realize we just elected nothing but a corrupt, thug, Chicago politician. Obama was an ardent supporter of this scum Gov. in 2002 and 2006. I'm proud to say I was one of the 58 million plus who did not get fooled by this smooth talking liar, Barack Obama.
BTW, there is no such thing as " The Office of the President-Elect." Just another example of this man's arrogance.

dustin   December 10th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

you all do realize that campaign season is over, some people on here are trying to show obama is at fault for this, another is saying 'oh look he's throwing another friend under the bus'. I know its ok to get crazy every four years or so, but do you really have to be this crazy before the man has any power to do anything? He's not a senator anymore, and not the president yet, so at least wait until jan 21 to criticize this man as a president, give him at least one day. Until then you just sound petty and like a bad sport when it comes to losing. The gov. was in the wrong, if he did do what they say, hopefully there is a law against it and he'll go to jail, in the mean time, obama is right, he should resign. Thats all that needs to be said about this story.

Chris in MI   December 10th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Blago, you're a sleazy scumbag. Might as well resign now. You're gonna need the time to prepare for a long trial, unless you just plead guilty and save us some money and just plead guilty. doubt you'll get any deal from the Feds, since they've got you on wiretaps.Oops!

Steve   December 10th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

This sleaze is unbelievable and is going to damage Obama and the people are to believe the purity of what comes out of Chicago.

fyi all, it turns out Obama did meet Blago on November 5th, the day after he was elected. The news outlet that had the report on this has removed the link from their website...but google has not.

At the very least, Mr. Obama was not being truthful yesterday when he said he had no discussion about with Blago on his open senate seat. He did.

Hopefully this will be vetted and not buried by the media.

SJC   December 10th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

To Frank,

You said:

"It wasn't rove who outed Plame, it was the democratic favorite Anthony Zinni. But you wouldn't know that because once your media found out it was Zinni and not Rove, they lost interest. But nice try."

Before posting and criticizing others you should make sure your facts are right. It wasn't Zinni, it was Richard Armitage in the Bush administration.

You also said:
"And the media has been against Bush from day 1, there is no Republican Media, only the liberal media."

The media failed to adequately look into Bush's claim of WMD in Iraq and implicitly endorsed this disastrous war. Also are you aware that there's Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Bob Grant, Sean Hannity and many many other lunatic right wing media programs?

So besides the fact that everything in your post was false, it was great! LOL!

Nancy   December 10th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Obama and Blag......how ever you spell his name aren't really affiliated. I am from Chicago, and it was obvious they weren't friends. Obama doesn't have to distance himself, he is the next President! He is doing his part by asking that criminal to resign.

Hello ALL,

I am from Chicago. I was born and raised here and Chicago has always been corrupt and a place where the Mob feels at home. But, the people of this great state are honest, GOd loving people. It offends me when people say that we are stupid for voting for Blago. When he first ran he was like a bright light. It was a big difference than what we were used to. But over time, stuff comes out. we were fooled by this man and we can't be fooled again. With that said, TO hell with all you darn Rethuglicans who are trying to make Obama look like he was the one on the tapes talking stuff. I know you guys are more racists than the Klan so it doesn't surprise me. I get it that you can't accept the election of a black man to the highest office. Deal with it or be accused of being unpatriotic haters. You all are funny. You just want to find some dirt on Obama don't you? It won't happen. your gonna give yourselves heart attacks trying to "get" Obama. It won't work. He is the President now. You guys and gals a such losers. Hey keep it up. You only look more stupid and angry.

Scott Tucson   December 10th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

He should have said it yesterday. Guess Obama wanted to see what the rest of the democratic leaders were saying about the governor before making his decision, so much for his leadership skills.

marie   December 10th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

please, this guy is a disease among human race and there are many others like him, but c'mon, to try to blame Obama for this with absolutely no proof whatsoever is crazy.... to listen to Hannity yesterday, i could almost feel his heartbeat racing at the thought of Obama being caught in this... well, you can always pray and send wishes to santa claus, but this governor, in the tapes, clearly says that he knows Obama will not give him anything but appreciation and he does not say it in the most diplomatic terms!!!!

J.P.   December 10th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

"Yes, you need to resign," Obama said, with a wink and a nudge.

Chicago politicians are not known for change... they're known for more of the same... more of the same sleaze, more of the same corruption, more of the same dishonesty and self-serving attitudes.

I just HOPE we get CHANGE in 2010. My finances can't afford anything less.

Chi-Town Girl   December 10th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

I am from Chicago and if you are into the POLITICAL arena there you would know 1 fundamental truth....that Blagojevich and Obama are no friends only cordial in the political sense... they are party affiliates that's it.
"G Rod" does not particularly like Obama. And has been corrupt from day one.... ask his father-in-law who busted his under handed, back door dealings some time ago. Do your research before linking Obama to any Chicago Politics. Some of us lack info intellegence.

Waiting to see how it plays out.   December 10th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Vanessa, he is the president elect. Not the president yet. No problem with calling him president once he is sworn in.

Also we do not "Know" that Obama is guilty or innocent of anything yet. Certain some things don't add up...or rather a lot of "mis-speaking" is going on – but that is circumstancial and speculative at this point. They are telling the public everything (probably for good reason). Until severe action and concrete evidence is put out to the public than presumbly he is innocent until proven guilty. However, the presumption of innocence does not make it so.

While I am skeptical based on what has been reported, better to withhold judgement until it all plays out.

Will this hound Obama? There will ALWAYS be something out there to test Obama. The MEDIA will be leading the charge. The media will make sure Obama's name is mentioned to keep the interest up. CNN, FoxNews and MSNBC are all rating hounds. They are nothing but 24/7 Talk Shows with the news thrown in. State politics are like the Soap Operas, the casts are small, so everyone touches everyone, crooks and the Lawful are thrown together. One thing about a crook, he/she makes sure they interacts with everyone, tainting the innocents just by knowing such. Will this hurt Obama? Not if he has more friends than foes. Right now he has more friends. Over half of America, and the majority of the World call Obama their friend, so he'll do alright. The Media and pundits will work overtime to try and change this.

Mike here are some facts: Obama has had a relationship with Mr. Blagojevich, having not only endorsed Blagojevich in 2002 and 2006, but having served as a top adviser to the Illinois governor in his first 2002 run for the state house. To say "They have never been friends" is just a lie. Maybe you should of learned about Obama's background be for you voted.

Mick   December 10th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Wow John Galt 1:36PM, you really need to do some research before you speak. Gov Blagojevich supported the opposing candidate for the democratic senate primary in 2004 when Obama made his initial run, and he was a no show for the DNC when Obama accepted the nomination. You would have known this if you read the basic articles on this topic before typing.

Republicans wanna make up any excuse to not follow a new direction. After 8 years of the worst President in history and an economy that is becoming more and more like the 1930's , these ReThuglicans still seem to have the audacity to throw firebombs. I just hope that they go further so that we can have our civil war and let those dumb conservatives secede from the Union like they intended to do so long ago. And as an answer to the question above. A conservative is far more likely to burn the flag. Never mind which side you were on Democrat or Republican. During the civil war conservatives seceded from the Union and liberals fought to free the slaves and against secession. And during the civil rights movement conservatives did burn the American flag this time as Republicans and not Democrats. I just hope these Republicans try to get violent it's high time we got rid of Hitler's 4th Reich.

Robert, Houston TX   December 10th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Gee and I thought the Dems were fight the culture of corruption, silly me. Obama has not even been sworn in yet and they prove the same as they painted the Republicans as being. So much for Obama and the Democrats being the hope for America. The gov of his own state even, ha! Let hope it's not one of those, "the apple dosen't fall too far from the tree" deals." The only thing that makes this better is that a Dem was on here the other day talking about how the gentleman who won Jeffersons seat in La. better change parties if he want to get re-elected. News flash; He got elected because they found $90,000 in FBI sting money in Jeffersons democratic freezer! That is why they lost the seat to a Republican. Many more to follow, mark my words. Some of you need to go and post on Politico where the rest of the GOP nuts are.

Marc   December 10th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Rick, call names on anyone that disagrees with you is not the way to make a point. Show facts, true ones and not those that are smears or empty accusations, FACTS. Expose them in a respectful way, after all you are either defending your position or rebuking one that you believe/think that is wrong, and a 'I'm smarter than you all' attitude is not appreciated.
Finally, if proven wrong or mistaken, admit it (at least in private), don't keep repeating what anyone who decides to check on your facts can easily find out that they are wrong or false, it will only discredit you.
This said, read the pdf file on this site with all the 76 pages of accusation against Blagojevich. It proves that he did tried to sell it (the seat at the Senate) to the Obama staff, but they didn't wanted to buy it, so he ended up calling them names and saying what he tought that they should do...

Debbie   December 10th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Most people are reluctant to call for someone to resign just on allegations even with tapes. Even you dttoheads can lodge a complaint against oh say, Obama about a silly issue like oh say a birth certificate.

you may resume sucking the binky or whatever

Read the criminal complaint against Blagojevich. You can find it online. Valerie Jarrett is "Senate Candidate 1." Has to be.

Chicago resident   December 10th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

There has been no talk of Obama being involved with this in any way as of now, aside from it being his seat Blago was trying to sell. The FBI has on tape the Gov. himself stating that the person Obama hoped would be appointed was only willing to "show their appreciation" instead of pay him off, which angered him.

You all need to stop trying to point the finger at Obama every time something goes wrong and start hearing the actual facts. Obama may not be perfect, but to act as if this somehow proves he's a no-good, dirty politician with ties to all the trash in the political scene is beyond ridiculous.

Lynn in NM   December 10th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Obama helped get him elected, and now he wants him to resign. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come with his cabinet.

MIgirl   December 10th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

These "sour grapes" Republicans have been waiting for ANYTHING to try to smear our duly-elected next President. The fact that it's this attempt to link a degenerate governor's abominable actions is so pathetic iit is almost laughable, if it weren't so ridiculous. Obama won! He's going to be our (yes, yours, too!) President! WE lived with YOURS for a horrible eight years! Get over it! Let the man try to clean up the mess YOUR guy left for all of us!

Jan Illinois   December 10th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Don't kid yourself, do you think that any and all politicians in Illinois are not connected? They have to be at some point, this could get ugly very fast. We in Illinois have every right to know exactly who is involved in our states corruption from the bottom to the top and we don't care who it is. If the governor decides to sing it, I want to hear the lyrics not just the tune.

Denise   December 10th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

The only way to get rid of corruption is for ANY elected official to do his or her job for no salary, no benefits, no nothing! It seems all politicians are VERY WEALTHY anyway, so if they really wanted to work for the people as they always say during election years let's put it to the test.

I wonder how many people would jump at the opportunity to be a Congressman/Congresswoman, Governor, President, etc.... This just might bring back some confidence in politics.

Thank you!

petena   December 10th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Republicans are working VERY HARD to figure out a way so that Obama does not take office. They go from the birth certificate to snooping around phone calls, etc. I think this guy should resign if he has proven to have done wrong. But until then....... Are Republicans' phone calls also being taped?

Super D   December 10th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Maybe Obama can pardon himself?

Sylvia   December 10th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

I have lived in the Chicagoland area all of my life. This is just "old school Illinois politics" at its best. For those people who follow Illinois politics the feds have been checking out Blago since 2001 or 2002. We knew it and he knew it. The only ties that Blago have to Obama is that fact that they are both Democrats and they both represent the State of Illinois.

Even if Obama did speak with Blago about who he would suggest gets appointed is it uncommon for this to occur. When others won the presidency don't think for one minute that did they not give their opinion on who should be appointed to complete the term that they were vacating. Let's just be real about the whole situation.

Some people are looking for any reason, any reason at all to discredit Obama. It is only one man and can not answer for everyone he know. We don't answer for the actions of everyone we know so why should he be held accountable for that. I am proud that I voted for President Obama.

George in SF   December 10th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Blago is a product of the same Illinois political machine that produced B.O. Notice how Resko's name showed up again? Probably just a coincidence.

DC Observer   December 10th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

State representative ----– $50,000
US Congressman ------ $150,000
US Senator --------- $300,000
President of US ------- $125,000,000 and counting

So what is the big deal here folks. Our government runs on campaign contributions, lobbyist donations, pork barrel projects, political appointments, and more

What the Governor of IL is doing is actually refreshing -- he is calling it what it is -– Pay to Play

Frank, Dayton, Ohio   December 10th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

To Marc: Get real. This is NOT Obama's scandal. This one belongs to Blagojevich alone.

To general situation: Blagojevich should resign or face impeachment if he's guilty because he has violated the public trust in a major way. It would be a shame for the legislature to have to correct this situation by imposing a cumbersome legislative process into something which has historically been a governor's perogative. Why should Illinois be denied representation in the Senate for the period of time needed for a legislature to act?

Trollmaster   December 10th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Obama needs to support throwing the book at this guy for what he did showing he won't stand for corruption within his own party, instead of the Republican response to corruption of their kind by justifying it by saying "well Democrats do it too."

Maggie from Virginia   December 10th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Marc, who are you kidding? You didn't vote for Obama. Nice try though!

Bill, ca   December 10th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

I fully agree with OhioJimmy, there are crooks on both sides and they should be ousted.

There should be a better screening procedure in place for senators, by
both parties and Obama calls for the right action.

These Messiah bloggers are corrupting all the discussions in these bloggs and are therefore not any better then Blagojevich.

Bobby   December 10th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

It ain't over 'till the corrupt governor sings. Why isn't the media reporting the fact one of Obama's closest advisors contracted him by saying the two (Obama and Blago) had indeed spoken about the latter's successor? Obama flatly denied this. Then, to make it even more interesting, the advisor changed his mind/selective memory. The other report out there is that the guy looking to buy the seat was another 'upstanding' Chicago politician (is there such a thing?) named Jesse Jackson, Jr. Go figure.....

Nola   December 10th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Would you Obama haters please take the time to read the legal documents – The Governor refers to Obama in a negative tone – these two did not like each other – Also read the Chicago Newspapers – and you will discover that the Governor and his wife were out for money and position – Obama was not willing to play their game.

Also the US Special Attorney stated that President -elect Obama was not involved in this pay to play game – if he had they would have had him in the documents. Would you haters please read before you open your mouths and touch a key on you computer

Antoinette   December 10th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Do you Republicans that are attacking "corrupt" Democrats realize that John McCain was one of the Keating 5? Did you vote for him? Shouldn't he have been tossed out, to? Personally, I think John McCain is a piece of scum for dropping bombs on villages and killing innocent women and children in Hanoi.

But, Blago is garbage and should should be put out with the trash. What a disgusting human being.

Friends   December 10th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

He will call all of his "friends" to resign, one way or another, eventually. That is what a friend is for.

jaye   December 10th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Each and every crook in the house and senate should be rounded up and sent to Iraq – and that includes Ted Stevens.
These people are disguisting, and all should be outed and sentenced.

Damon   December 10th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

How are you going to link Obama to this man, and not link his own Lt. Gov. to the scam? You Obama haters can't see the forest for the trees. This is just a greedy man that did not care about the state of Illinois. All he cared about was making money.

California Gold   December 10th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Of course Blagojevich should be called on to resign. Part of effective leadership is to accept the fact that the governor's efforts are now going to be defending himself on charges for his conduct as governor. He will not be able to govern and serve the people of the State of Illinois effectively. Maybe as a nation we ought to collectively declare a War on Corrupt American Politicians.

TexasAnnie *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*   December 10th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Personally I think Blagojevich should resign based on what I read in the indictment papers– and yes, I read all 79 pages.

BUT, I find it interesting that everybody said let Sen. Ted Stevens go thru the judicial process before declaring him guilty. And there have been other instances where the public has said "innocent until proven guilty" when dealing with other political mis-steps.... but for some reason we all seem to want Blagojevich's head right here & now. What is different here???

Eileen   December 10th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Obama is such a hypocrit. He should resign too. We don't want Chicago politics running this country. Obama is a crook and a liar. Obama is the fruit of the political machine in Chicago. This country will never survive his presidency. He is not even in the White House and he is involved in a scandal AGAIN. Everyone that bought into his BS and voted for him are complete morons.

Greg from ATL   December 10th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

I don't know Jesse Jackson Jr. well and I am not from Chicago but I have to ask, If I am already a congressman, and someone did present to me a, "Pay for Play" proposition......why would I? I am already in the house. I could run for the seat without paying for it. Maybe I'm not corrupt enough to see the logic in it. Besides being stupid, risking my political career, it's just dumb because he already has a house on the Hill...........why pay for another one?

These right wing bloggers will try anythng to smear our new president's name, but they won't succeed. They fail to realize that when Barack Obama was the State and U.S. senator for Illinois, he fought corruption. So trying to connect the dots and find some lame excuse to attach President-elect Obama's name to this crime is ridiculous and desperate on their part. Give up GOP. Your days are up.

Come one to say that all politicians are corrupt is ridiculous. Its like saying that all restaurant owners are corrupt because some are owned by the mob. As a college student who has worked for several politicians I know this to be false. think what you will, but the only reason its so prominent is because its a high profile job and the media is looking for a story and making money. The few politicians who commit high profile corruption crimes are a minority who are ruining it for those like me who want to get into government to make a difference. And they are ruining the peoples trust in our elected government. Have faith, there are many politicians working hard for you.

sg   December 10th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

The Feds were investigating Blog since 2004. It's been widely known for a long time that Ill. politics is highly corrupt. Why wasn't Obama fighting the corruption years ago?? Can anyone answer that question??

A Woman In California For Obama   December 10th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

While this is disgusting and Gov. Blagojevich should certainly be held accountable, I think Obama should stay out of it. He wanted the presidency, he left his seat in the senate for it-so let the people in Illinois make the decisions now and I'm sure when they have to they will.

oceanpath   December 10th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

The real question is should Obama be dismissing all advisors and staff that have any background training in this totally corrupt style of politics that Americans are just now learning is the norm, not the exception in Illinois?
The question is no longer what he can do for America, but what these thugs can do to him and our traditions in government.

Interesting   December 10th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

I find it mildly amusing and , at best , interesting that some here would would automatically apply an "X-Files" story as to why a Newly Elected President Obama would want to have a nutcase like Blago resign, in teh wake of OVERWHELMING taped evidence of corruption. Keep digging the hole people–then jump in, ok? Thanks!

Republican   December 10th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

I can not believe some of my brethren are so childish as to start throwing stones at Obama, and/or the democrats.

Democrats are certainly capable of fraud and or ethics violations. But I, as a republican, sure as heck can't stand upon any moral ground based on the history of the past 16 years....that is to include all Presidents during that time and both parties!

Simply because Obama is from chicago and is a democrat, it's lunacy and immature to start this un-patriotic "connect him because I feel like a sore loser" mentality. Grow up you whining Republicans! You're making it difficult to be proud of my party!

Bill   December 10th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

I'm amused by the Obama hate in these comments. Obama did not "throw Blago under the bus" or anything ridiculous like that. Some people just can't seem to grasp that Obama is a decent person trying to bring ethics back into politics. It's sad to see all of the hate. After 8 years of Obama, though, the country will be much better off, even if the hate doesn't let up.

Wow! How dumb can a person be? This is stupidity in the highest form. I think it is time for the average person that has lost his or her job to all of this mismanagement of the public trust to run for office. What can it hurt? I'll bet that person will do better than what has been.

Tyrone Brown   December 10th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Tim from Ohio   December 10th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

I love how when you read blogs during the election on CNN website 95% of them were pro Oboma. Now after the election the majority are against him. Hmmmmm....think people were paid to do nothing but blog away about how great Oboma was? With his campaign budget I bet they were.

All of my friends in Chicago are good people and I hold nothing against them, however the political machine that is Chicago is nothing but trouble. Hmmm...didn't Akorn start in this same city? This plays no connection with Oboma? Give me a break people!!! Look at the connections and if you can't find them on CNN website (aka the left stream media) check out Fox News. They actually tell you about the scary connections of people.

Love to see the true people can actually get a chance to speak their peace on CNN blogs now.

I am hoping that the Governor will make a plea bargain and to spill the beans on other corruption going on in the windy city.

What about the tie between Rezko, the governor and Obama?

How have the people of Illinois voted in so many Governors who end up in prison?? Are they that easily duped??

Carol Wunderlich   December 10th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

The corruption of Illinois' government is not new, nor is it isolated. It trickles down to the lowest levels.I grew up in Chester, IL, the location of Menard State Pententiary. Growing up, it was well understood that if you wanted a job working at the Prison you had to "know" somebody and/or pay somebody to get a job there. It didn't matter who was most qualified for the job, it was who you knew or how much you paid.

For that matter, what makes government jobs so appealing...the fact that you get paid very well for a job that doesn't really require any WORK!!! So, the taxpayers are getting ripped off on many levels.

I live in South Carolina now, but I can almost guarantee that if you took a poll, you'd find that 75% of the employees in state/policital positions got that job through connections, not be being most qualified.

Carol

Unbelievable: "He feels he didn't do anything wrong," Blagojevich's attorney, Sheldon Sorosky, told reporters Tuesday night. "He hopes the people of Illinois have faith in him because he will be vindicated."

Why doesn't anyone ever just own up to their mistakes? What a weak, pathetic man.

ALL politicians of ALL parties need to have term limits and should be "regulated" by ethics teams.

Lobbyists donating $$ is just as bad as what Blagojevich did. Think this is "only" Democrats? Pls see Sen. Stevens and Gov. Palin (it's all parties)

Rick   December 10th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

And if you believe that Obama didn't at least have knowledge of these corrupt activities, if not fully involved, then you're a fool. This is Chicago politics at it's finest and it's a team sport.

Between this and Rezko coming up, Obama will be lucky to make it to inauguration day without being indicted.

I live in Illinois and I think Blago should resign. Obama was our last decent politician and Illinois lost him to the rest of the country. It is worth it because now Obama can do good for the whole nation, not just Illinois.

Meanwhile, we need to hose down our crooked politicians and lock them all away.

In Nigeria we say that if a man calls his property dirt can, his neighbors will use it to park dirt. Call your P. E a good name and the world will respect him. Call him a bad name and the world will disrespect him.

Is there really anything to say out side of, "politic as usual"?

COLT_223 in IL   December 10th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Think about this: According to the affidavit, this behavior of Blagojovich and company has allegedly been going on since day 1. Before that... remember Ryan? He's in prison right now for corruption. We here in downstate Illinois are constantly forced to live under the goverment that Chicago selects for us, and it has been nothing but corruption for decades. Now do you think for a second, that this Chicago political machine would have allowed a "clean-cut, honest guy" (if that's what Obama is) to rise as quickly as he did, if at all, if he wasn't a player? think about it, if you and your "organization" were commiting all these crimes, would you allow an "outsider" in on it? Absolutely not – he'd get you busted in a heartbeat. I'm just speculating, but I can't help but think that anyone that rose to this level of power within a govenment as chocked-full of crime and corruption as Illinois, would almost had to have been a "player" himself. I live in Illinois and I had never even heard of Obama until a few years ago. I hope it's not true, and if it is I think it will be "rationalized away", swept under the rug, because I believe that if they take the presidency away from him this country will be one giagantic riot from coast to coast.

Marc   December 10th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

I'm ashamed that I voted for Obama. The election was barely a month ago and he's dealing with a scandal! At least with McCain, we knew where we stood. I admit I, nor the media, vetter him enough. Ridiculous to think then Sen. Obama had no dealings with the Governor. America, wake up!

DavidinCA   December 10th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

You Liberals just don't get it. None of us Conservatives are hoping Obama is involved. We are not hoping for his demise. But what we are seeing here is the exact pattern that we tried to tell YOU in the election cycle. Obama is a product of a broken Chicago/Illinois-style political machine where this behavior is the norm. Obama helped get this guy elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. Back in 2006 he could very well have backed another Democrat for governor knowing that this guy never followed through on the reform he promised back in 2002. Instead, Obama backed the incmbent who, by then, was well known to be anything BUT a reformer.

Christine   December 10th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

I live in the most corrupt little city in America- here in CT., USA. Three of our past four mayors have been prison- all Republican (oops). One is still under house arrest, trying to avoid another prison term, another is serving three consecutive life terms and suing our city for his pension and salary. Here in "Corrupt-a-bury" we're used to this, and the disappointment of feeling trapped under corruption and greed. I'm hoping that the new federal adminstration will help all of our communities dig out from politics as usual and reform!
Maybe I'll run for mayor.....?

Here we go...   December 10th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

This is about the Gov Blag not Obama. To date Obama has not been charged with anything with substantiating evidence nor indicted on anything. Apparently, the only thing he has done wrong so far in the eyes of the public was to be born Black and to choose to be a Democrat.

Cindy   December 10th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

So this is the dirty politics that Chicago is known for? Time to clean up, Chicago!

I don't think it's all Chicago politicians, but surely the bad ones taint the good ones as well. It's a wonder that a President was able to rise out of the dirty muck... I still truly believe he's one of the good ones.

Darrell E   December 10th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

geecee827   December 10th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

It's called politics people. Ever hear of politics? It controls every move that elected people make. Very difficult to avoid the good or bad politicians if you are one of them; and in addition if they happen to be Governor of your state. Obama was and is too smart to have gotten involved too closely with this guy. Sure he had to work with him on some level as the man was Governor of Illinois and Obama was a Senator. But I don't think they were cozy, so to speak. How the Gov. could have been so stupid to think he could sell Obama's Senate seat and not get caught at it is just unbelievable. I also feel sorry for the person who tried to "buy" it, by the way, if there is such a person. His life is ruined also.

Cristine C.   December 10th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Right wingers: Barack has about as much connected to Blagojevich as your trophy girl Palin has to Ted Stevens. I know you'd just LOOOOVE to think that Barack is involved, but he's not. Try and check your facts instead of just regurgitating what Sean Hannity told you to think.

SC Dallas   December 10th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

The Illinois lawmakers might as well put in place a special provision to elect a new governor at the same time as Obama's senate seat, kill 2 birds with one stone. Of course that'd be too efficient, can't have the government being productive and actually doing things that make sense now can we!

Chicago GOP December 10th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Who would be allowed to run in this special election? I would imagine they would have to allow anyone to run. Hopefully this leads to a GOP senator Nonetheless (and more realistically) we will be able to vote for a person based on their character and political opinions. I am tired of the commentary that Jesse Jackson Jr. should be selected based on the belief that we need a 'african american' in the senate. I believe Martin Luther King, Jr. said people should 'not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.' Shouldn't the inverse of this also hold true? Shouldn't we select based on the content of character and not color? If we select Jackson, we are doing the opposite of Martin Luther King Jr's goals…selecting a political figure BASED on color. He is not the best candidate for the job. As long as we have people who perpetuate the need to differentiate based on color, racial lines will always exist!

In the old days, when such news even sullied or tainted the president's office by suggestion only, such measures were initiated until the Bush administration's time when anything possibly tainted the office, people may be promoted, just look at the Abramoff scandal alone. Obama is doing the right thing by suggesting the Illinois governor step down. Given the perks of high leaders such as the Illinois governor's office, these expectations of continued corruption should be quashed!

Did you read the OBAMA-MUST-BE-BASHED-AT-ALL-COSTS posts on this blog? 'Must', 'Should', 'I guess' and others words that only make clear that they have NO PROOF against PE Barack Obama.
But, honestly, did they ever needed one?
YES the Chicago politics stinks, in the end of 1991 there was an editorial congratulating the city because there hasn't been ANY big indictment, scandal or acusation against any public officer (from the Executive or Legislative) that had happened that year. You read it right...
And Obama came from there so he must (ooops, look at me using one of their favorite wordas...) not be a saint..., hey... he isn't!
He's a politician. But so far NO PROOF was found that links him to this disgrace of a state government's latest scandal. Quite the contrary actually...
So if you don't have any real, authentic and not self-made proof of any serious wrongdoing that the PEOTUS has done since he started his political career (the ties with Rezko doesn't count, the guy has ties with both Dems. and Reps. since forever) don't make a fool of yourself by using 'MUST', 'SHOULD', 'MAY BE', 'I GUESS'...

Patrick   December 10th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

People need to quit electing the same party to office in the same parts of the country. Illinois try electing an honest republican to office in areas where the democrats have been corrupt for years, people need to do the same thing in areas where Republican have had control for decades as well. Gen. Patton from 1:29,
Obama stole Florida by having a lot of neo nazi folks, say about 200,000, vote for Ralph nader. Oops, that's wrong. I think it was 200,000 Jewish voters who voted for Pat Buchanan.
Course, it didn't hurt to have the Sec'y of State be a state campaign manager for Bush, amnd have his biological brother be Gov. of the state of Florida.

Speaking of the Sec'y of State, I'm also clear about one who helped remove 150,000 voters from the roles and also helped get some other questionable things done through the computer firm that monitored the ballots. Surely that was Obama, right?
Oh wait, that's wrong too. That would be Ken Blackwell covering up for President Bush in 2004.
And if either of these VERY QUESTIONABLE things hadn't happened President Bush would have had the same fate as Sarah Palin, going back to be Gov. and many American soldiers wouldn't be dead, or crippled after fighting in an unjust war.

In your scenario, give McCain any state that was within two points and Obama still wins. So, sorry. The 2008 Presidential election was, finally, fair and square. Your horse got close, but that only counts in horseshoes and grenades. Salute, at your convenience of course, President Obama as of January 20, 2009, 12 noon.

Jared in CA   December 10th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Yes, good call Mr. Obama. I'm sure you had absolutely no idea this was happening, right?
I mean, it was YOUR senate seat, and it was the governor of YOUR state. But, no worries, I'm sure all this was just going on under your nose.
Even if you were too busy courting the camera to know what's going on with your job, no one can hold THAT against you, right?
Just a reminder, you're still a Senator until January, and just like the rest of us, you have to WORK at your old job until you start the new one.

Ethelred the Unready December 10th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

The Obama Administration must avoid scandal or the suggestion of scandal to be successful. Why? Because Conservative leaders are waiting, hoping, and praying for any error, any blunder, any misstep that they can pounce on. They have learned how to play the media like an accordian, and they will divert the nation's attention from issues like employment, wages, child health care, the mortgage crisis, the recession, corporate hanky-panky, veterans benefits, etc.

Conservative leaders would much prefer for the nation to be discussing whether Obama's mother-in-law's Sunday School teacher wrote an unpatriotic essay when she was in the eleventh grade. "I'm not saying Obama is necessarily a traitor because of this," they will say, "but the American people deserve to hear the truth! And if the President himself turns out to be a traitor – mind you i'm not saying he is – then how many of his friends are traitors too? America needs to learn the truth!"

Conservatism is an unpatriotic political philosophy and it needs to be disregarded as a rational option for the nation.

I agree that Blagojevich should resign. I also think he should be punished and serve time. This corruption needs to be eliminated from those in government. The people we elect need to be held to a higher standard and should not be above the law for breaking it.

This is just a single instance. I'm sure this may have happened under the radar at some other point in our nation's history in this or other states. There should be a checks and balances on this process so that this CAN NOT happen again. Maybe it should be decided by more than a single person. In any case, there has to be a change placed into action.

Knowing Blago, I'm sure that the only reason he stood behind BO was that in his mind the election of Obama was going to be a windfall for him. He's been angling for this for years. Every politician in this City is a dirt ball. And the few honest and reputable politicians who occasionally make an attempt to run are steam-rolled by the patronage armies of these incumbent fools (Blago, Stroger, Jones, Guttierez, and on and on...). Blago does however take the cake! I doubt there has even been a more arrogant, egocentric, possibly dangerous man in office in the State. And his wife? She may very well be more evil than he, she's smarter! And we are deserving of the Olympics? Best City on America by GQ? What is everybody smoking?

Brian L Ross   December 10th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

I'velived in Illinois 32 years. Thompson, Ryan, and now Blagojevitch: Barak Obama–he grew in the same orchard. Tell me what do you honestly expect from him as president?

Mike   December 10th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

I'm satisfied with PE Obama's call for the governor's resignation. I'm happy that he took a bit of time to think about what he should say. This business of shooting off one's mouth and thinking about it later as the leader of the free world is apparently, thankfully, a thing of the past. The news media does need to be careful about being consistent in its reporting with respect to identifying the political party affiliation of the subjects of its reporting. Either identify all subjects by political party or identify none. This will take away the ammunition of those who wish to claim biased or otherwise tainted reporting. US Atty Stewart has shown himself to be willing to go full speed after politicians who violate the law without regard to their political party. I trust him. If he says that his office is making no allegations against PE Obama, I believe that that is because the PE was not involved.

Where was Mr. Obama yesterday when everyone else was calling for his resignation? Way to jump on the band wagon, Mr. President-elect.

Tom D   December 10th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

We, as Americans, are supposedly the best educated society on earth. It sickens me to read the ignorance of people here. Do you really believe the hate you spew? THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR GOVERNMENT!!! We are more likely to vote for a candidate in our own party than we are for the qualified person.

Because a candidate belongs to a party you oppose you all would rather spread filth than do research. Wake up America, use the good sense God gave you and take the time to RESEARCH before you spew. The world must chuckle and view us all as rednecks when they see this.

Angie-OHIO   December 10th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Good move President elect Obama. Blagojevich should resign. the govenorship is Illinois is something. they get crazy with power thinking they are above the law. the govenor before blagojevich is in jail. maybe they will be cellmates. he sounds like an arrogant jerk. he gets the LOSER AWARD FOR TODAY.

Lisa V   December 10th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

In reference to the Obama bashing that has been going on: Thanks to the McCain Palin ticket firing up The Base (code for the least educated, least diverse, and least tolerant people in this country), this is the type of politics we are going to have to look forward to for the next four years: Opportunistic Scapegoating. Then, even if Obama is the saints of saints and turns the economy around, things are going to get even uglier for the 2012 election.

Ethelred the Unready   December 10th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

I'm tired of those who believe that elections are about "character." Character is a fantasy concept which cannot be defined and cannot be discerned. Those who look for "character" in their candidates typically vote for the biggest flag-waving blow-hard they can find. They like people who – modestly of course – spend all their time tooting their own horn, patting themselves on the back, and jutting their jaws in carefully rehearsed poses.

Ronald Reagan famously said, "Sincerety is the key thing. If you can fake that, you've got it made!" Those around Reagan laughed, as though he were joking.

Soccer Nana   December 10th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Did anyone notice that this governor was not asked to speak at all during the DNC or in Grant Park after Obama won the election?

Then he is on tape calling Obama a MF? Wow! What a nut-burger.

Joe   December 10th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Frank said...

"And the media has been against Bush from day 1, there is no Republican Media, only the liberal media."

What's the weather like on your planet? Here on Earth, the media was comically pro-Bush for most of his presidency. Think waaay back to when he started an unprovoked war based on spurious evidence. No one in the mainstream media bothered asking any serious questions. Same thing for the PATRIOT act. If the media were even remotely anti-Bush he would've been impeached before the 2004 election.

The "liberal media" is a myth made up by conservatives who'd rather resort to ad hominem attacks than admit when they're wrong.

ChicagoSuz   December 10th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

I think Blagojevich may go out kicking & screaming. (Think Larry Craig.) The State Senate may have to vote to strip him of the power to appoint the replacement asap, then initiate impeachment proceedings.

It'll be a race then to see which comes first – jail or impeachment.

I hope the Lt. Governor is as clean as they say...

Jo   December 10th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

To those who are attacking what PE Obama said: What would you want him to say? He said the same thing that I am sure 99% of the people of the state of Illinois have said. He should resign. Get over your self righouness and off your pdestal. Little George defended his attorney general who was caught lying and now can't even get job in a law firm.

The repub posters here seem to think Obama was the one doing the extorting. He was the one who did not want to play that game, so whatever you think happened has not been disclosed. Since the phone calls were wiretapped, if PE Obama said/did anything wrong, THAT would be a bigger story than gov blago.

Frank, did you post your repuke talking point on the wrong blog?

Joe   December 10th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

There times when politicians make dumb decisons that have nothing at all to do with being republican or democrat...the decisions really have a lot to do with being just plain DUMB. I'm praying for Rod and others. A priceless piece of advice, Submit yourself to God, then you'll have the capacity to resist the devil (& his temptations). Peace out.

Karen   December 10th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Is Obama going to call on Rahm to resign?

According to paragraphs 100-107, Blagojevich states on tape that the advisor from the 5th CD (congressional district) preferred giving Blagojevich the 'change to win' position. Rahm holds the 5th CD currently. Duh.

Laverne   December 10th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

This is not a shocker by any stretch of the imagination. Corruption is all over Washington, Illinois, NY and yes Alaska. In a world where anything seems to go you can only be responsible for yourself and your own actions. You can't make grown people behave in an ethical way if they wish not to and unfortunately sometimes we have to work with crooks and people we don't like very much. The people of these states are the ones electing their officials and turning a blind eye to what they know is corruption.

Da Professor   December 10th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

I don't trust the government. I don't trust any of the institutions including The Church. I don't trust people in general. As far as not voting is concerned, it is NOT apathy. It is contempt.

But, if all this is true, the Gov should step down.....btw.....just like Sarah Palin SHOULD have stepped down after she was found guilty of abuse of power by a NON_PARTISAN panel in AK. Oh I forgot, she created another panel to exonerate her......how much does THAT smell?? Don't criticize when your own closet is full of skeletons.

To Bhupendra – that dislike Obama – you cannot judge the president elect Obama relate to this scandal. Youneed to read about "who is" Gov. Rod Blagojevich in Wikipedia and you will know why he did this corruption. You cannot judge someone because he is from Chicago and relate them to this corruption. Gov. Blagojevich did this on his own because his greed and abuse power.
So, think before you judge someone.

Clair   December 10th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Reps and conservatives are salivating on that, lol. They really needed a bone lately, poor guys. And like hungry dogs they are going to nimble on that for a while. By the way, it was not a convicted Rep felon disputing the seat for Alaska without even a whimp from them?
Their high values are only valid against democrats, now I remember why I left the right for good. hypocrisy.
From my side, I find wonderful this guy is being busted now and I hope even more the house gets clean as soon as possible. Better yet if it was Obama people that ousted the pariah.

MK   December 10th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

The people here who actually think Pres. Elect Obama and Gov. Rod are friends obviously don't live in Illinois and don't have a clue. They are not close, there are no ties, Obama blocked him from speaking at the convention, did not campaign, and the hopefully soon to be ex-gov. did nothing to get Obama elected because Obama didn't want anything to do with him. Please quit trying to come up with make believe ties to people that don't exist, or at least do a little homework first.

I think it is funny that the Republicans who lost and are very angry about that fact are still going around spewing hatred and accusations about Obama still. You need to get on with your lives. Living with such anger is only going to hurt yourselves.
Corruption isn't a Republican or Democratic issue! It has happened about equally on BOTH sides. Morality or lack of it is a personality trait depending on the person not according to what party they are in!
The FBI has been taping Blagojevich for years. The taped evidence shows that Obama did not participate in this corruption in any way. It came straight from the horse's mouth. Sorry Republicans, I know how much you wish it but wishing something doesn't make it fact!

Peter   December 10th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

The Governor should resign immediately.

There are some who believe that he has certain rights; to be innocent before being found guilty is a right but to serve is a privilege.

To Mike in Missouri:

Why are you even bringing up Sarah Palin? Sarah Palin is nothing to the corrupt and filthy politics in the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois. I have lived here 54 years and the politics have always been dirty. The people in the State of Illinois (especially the City of Chicago) know how dirty it is here – so why are all of you outside of Illinois surprised? Quite frankly, all of our politicians from the local, state and executive levels should be put on a train to Siberia. They are all rotten!

And, by the way, Mike in Missouri – what group of politicians do you think our President-elect comes from? Answer: The corrupt Chicago-based Democratic party!

M. Taylor   December 10th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

From now until eternity, Mr. Obama will be blamed for everything every democratic politician ever does. Instead of the republicans trying to work with the President-Elect to make for a better US of America, they are still trying to tarnish him so he will not be inaugurated on January 20th. Mr. Obama has proved to date that he is an intelligent, thoughful and respectful man and certainly he was not at the other end of the undercover wiretap phone speaking with the governor. He was busy with his transition team selecting the cabinet members and issues of the economy. The Republicans who think they should rule America forever, will not get over their loss and will continue to do everything in their power to thwart the positive plans that he intends to implement starting January 20th. I am hoping that the newsmedia (at least int he mainstream – I expect the conservative media to act as they usually do) to at least try to report objectively and not try to subvert Mr. Obama. They tried with with the Rev. Wright and Mr. Ayers and lost. All the best Mr. Obama – keep on the straight and narrow. Just remember that they are still trying to prove that you are not elible for the Presidency even though you were born in Hawaii. HA HA! LOL (Laugh out Loud).

Read "Audacity of Hope" by Obama and you will see his character–its pretty pure!!! AND I've been a republican for 40 years and completely disgusted with the rep party and what has happened. Obama had NOTHING to do with RB–even Fitzpatrick said so and Blogo hatted Obama for his honesty and uprightness!!!

Jennifer NY   December 10th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

So, we can add due process, the right to face your accusers, and innocent until proven guilty to our ever lengthening list of civil rights that shall never return.
So far, what has come out of the U.S. Attorneys office (the morning after he recommended all state agencies refuse to do business with the Bank of America) are just sentences that could be put into any context. I've been telling my wife for years 'I've got something really big and boy is it (expletive deleted) golden' for years, but she's seen it – so thats different.
Recusing himself from the appointment of a new senator would be the ethical thing to do, but to ask, force or coerce him into doing anything that might implicate his guilt before a fair trial is UN-AMERICAN.
Shame on the lot of you.

an american first   December 10th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

I agree with you Nathan. People get so caught up in these so called scandals that they forget why we elected him in the first place. Just yesterday a poll was out that stated that about 79% of Americans felt that Pres. Elect Obama is doing a good job with his transition process. But now suddenly, we are focusing on how he was related to this crazy governor. Let him do his job otherwise we will all get tangled up in the "Same Old Politics" nonsense.

To say all these negative stuff about Pres. Elect Obama as a result of his State governor being indicted is simply ridiculous and distracting us from the real change he is already starting to make. I am not saying we should blindly trust him, but come on folks, this is not his story. This is the governor's story. Leave it at that... He is the ultimate victim here because if the governor was not crazy enough to do what he did, then Pres. Elect will still be able to focus on who he is going to pick as the Education and labor secretary and others and define policies that fundamentally is going to change this country into a better one.

Tyrone Jackson   December 10th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Liberalism is an evil that has crept into America and it must be eradicated for this country to continue & Obama understands this very well. You fools with your blind hatred have elected a Democrat who wants to be loved and adored by middle America much more than please the radical left that brought him into the White House. He is wiser than you and this will be proved as we watch him turn away from the very ones that brought him to power!

Godluvr   December 10th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Wendy NC   December 10th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

I personally think that the reason Obama has been surprised and a bit hesitant about this is that probably two of his team, actually were the whistle-blowers on this deal. Valerie Jarrett has to be candidate 1 and she withdrew her name the day after talking to Blago. The other person is probably Rahmbo. I think they kept Obama out of it but they reported what transpired when Valerie talked to Blago. Time will tell and if this is the case, it's obvious why they are being tentative – they are now part of the investigation.

Pat Weaver   December 10th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Being a resident of Illinois, it is no secret that our state political system has been corrupt for as long as many of us can remember. These atrocities occur on all levels of our Government, with little being done to fix the problems at ANY level. I couldn't believe during the election coverage that this issue was not brought to the forefront of the campaigns seeing Obama was born from this cesspool of dirty politics. That being said, why is there no outcry after the bumbling of the question posed to the president elect about his involvement in Blago's current disgrace? Is it not obvious to anyone else that a hood has been placed over the eyes of America when a man can buy an election on the premise of changing the political spectrum of America, when in fact, he is the poster child for what can be achieved through lies, rhetoric, and deception. To say he was not involved in this situation with Blago, or any other of the numerous scandals that have plagued the political monster that is the State of Illinois’ is ludicrous. Wasn’t this sort of scandal supposed to be what Barack and his “CHANGE” anthem was all about? Enough is enough. Will someone please ask the difficult questions that need to be answered? Thank you

I remember everyone, including the media, being smitten with him in the days and weeks afterward. And I remember the media being quite amicable to him when he took office. But hey, what does historical evidence matter when it doesn't jive with your narrow conception of reality?

If anyone is against Bush, it's because of his incompetence and the low-life people he chose to surround himself with.

Lauren the Designer   December 10th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Oh just as I suspected...the rabid right trying to pin this loser on the PE.
I feel like every day there just ends up being some new story that the crazy conspiracy theorists try to turn around and blame on Obama just because he won and their candidate didn't.

Didn't you ever think that maybe you should pray that he does a good job as President instead of fighting against everything he does? You are all American citizens, right? If the country completely gets flushed, will you not suffer those consequences too? Stop being such sore losers and try being optimistic for a change. What this man does is going to affect you one way or another, and he is your president for the next 4 years whether you like him or not. So I would think you would be hoping for a success.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Pat Quinn. My personal feeling is that he along with Dick Durbin are the two shining stars that we have in this politicaly incorrect state that I live in. I hope that their leadership can guide us out of this mess and with Durbin in Washington, Obama president and Pat Quinn our governor, we could again be proud to say that we live in Illinois.

JOHN   December 10th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Wow...what a daring and bold move by The Messiah.....of course he is going to call on him to resign...he has to distance himself as far as he can from this guy before he is indicted for the Reszco deal.

President-Elect Joe Biden....well at least he is constitutionally eligible.

AJS   December 10th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

I have come across some real idiots in my time, but this Blagojevich is very easily the biggest idiot I have ever heard seen. He is quite a few bricks short of a full load.

If there was an Olympic game for idiots, he would win the Bronze, the Silver and the Gold. The man is INSANE. He has to be, there is no other explanation for this. He's been watching too many gangster movies. Somebody please, take not only his job away from him, but get his TV too.

Rob Johnson   December 10th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

One of the more positive things about this whole unpleasant spectacle is that we have Blagojevich on tape saying that Obama and his people weren't willing to play his game of extortion and blackmail.

It's good to know that even behind closed doors, Obama walks his talk and doesn't sink to that level.

Way to take the high road, Mr. President Elect. How somebody as principled as Barack Obama ever emerged from the open sewer of Chicago politics is one of the great mysteries of our age.

E.Z   December 10th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

I guess I should have known something like this would happen when I moved here. When I lived in Phoenix, another ignorant corrupt governor was impeached, Evan Meacham.

Blagojevich is going to resign, he has no other choice, his political career is gone and I would not pay a nickel to have him be my lawyer should he decide to go into the private sector, his own father in law cannot stand the man. Patti deserves him; she is a crook and a cheat too.

Shut up...Please!   December 10th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Frank   December 10th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

At least we all agree that Obama should distance himself from these types of people. The only disagreement that republicans and democrats have is as to timing. It would have been nice to distance himself from these types of people early in the relationship. It's a pattern that repeats, i.e. Wright, Ayers and Rezko.

Rezko loves Obama   December 10th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Obama knew about this, yet said and did nothing. How do we know that Obama knew about this?? b/c blago is on tape yelling about Obama not playing ball. But Jesse Jr, was willing and wasn't he a national campaign figuer for BHO. The chances that everyone around Obama stinks but Obama is clean are low..very low.

Belle   December 10th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Doesn't it bother anyone that Obama is untruthful, or is that to be expected?

In the preface of his book, Audacity of Hope, he talks about his first run for State Senate...he says he was the losing candidate in a field of very stiff competition. Then he talks about knocking door to door, county to county until he covered the state. Yet, he had hired attorneys to kick every single competitor off the ballot so his name was the only one on it. He knew 4 months before the election he would be the only one.

Then yesterday, he said he had never met with Governor Blagojevich about the senate seat. Yet, on Nov. 5 Carol Sowers of Connect tri State wrote an article about Obama meeting with Blagojevich that day about the Senate seat.

Axelrod said on Nov. 20 that Obama and Blagojevich were in close contact.

Then yesterday, Alxerod sent a press release saying he mis-spoke.

Doesn't this bother anyone? Or is lying just the norm in politics? It is my personal opinion Obama and Axelrod are liars.

Jack from 7th Street   December 10th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

I guarantee you, if Obama had anything to do with Blogo, the US Attorney would have named him also. What bigger feather in his cap than catching a president-elect? So please, let Obama get on with his transition, and address the grave problems we all face.

mike   December 10th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Just add this guy to the long list of outstanding people the somehow are connected to Dear leader Obama. You can take the man out of Chicago, but you can't take Chicago out of the man. Just wait its going to be a fun 4 years. I forgot it's all Bush's fault.

ghettoforever   December 10th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

What is a conspiracy? A conspiracy occurs when two or more people communicate with each other secretly to plan one or more actions to enable them to make a profit.

Where is the beef? Where is the profit he made? Where is the property he received? Where is the new job for his wife? Are you people nuts? Other than a lot of silly talk, where is the crime? I believe the media and the attorney general jumped the gun. No one is reporting that this man received one thing from anyone. So far, this is a lot of BS talk. I cannot believe the responses to this. If I were on a jury trial for this issue, unless the government can PROVE he RECEIVED something, I would vote not guilty.

Femi   December 10th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

I find the behaviour of the Govornor very disheartening. I completely agree with Green that what was he thinking. I suggest his past be thouroughly investigated. His attitude and behaviour suggest that he is a guy that is used to doing illegal deals which he has been getting away with it. I support the President's Elect position and I think the conservatives will do themselves no good in trying to rubbish the image of the President Elect. It did not work during the election and what makes them think it will now

Hoyt   December 10th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Resign?! He should be thrown in prison! Why should he be given the respect of allowing him the opportunity, or CHOICE, to resign?! Do we owe him something? He is a thug and a crook, period. What is even more scary is what has he done that we don't know about? What kind of system allows such a man to get so far? How many more are there like him?!

Frank   December 10th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Also, does anyone find it interesting that Fitzgerald acted so quickly on the wiretaps? Blago certainly had many other Democratic hotshots swimming around his line. Some even took nibbles and at least one would have taken the bait. I find it interesting that the prosecutor wouldn't want to take down some other crooked politicians. There was no urgency to arrest Blago, it should have been played out to see if anyone took the bait. Maybe because the only players were democrats? Maybe because if they let it continue and several people took the bait, the US political system would be the laughingstock of the world. Maybe because it was getting too close to Obama? I don't know, but it certainly smells fishy, pun intended.

steve from somerset   December 10th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Let me get this straight.

Governor Blagojevich knew he was under investigation. He had reason to believe that his telephone was bugged. Because they were federal investigators, he had no control over them.He also knew that the previous Governor is currently in jail. Yet he went ahead with all of these criminal activities.

Blagojevich is more than merely a corrupt politician. He is somone totally divorced from reality.

Blago is just a sad continuation of corrupt politicians who have occupied the Governor's Mansion in Springfield. Having been an Illinois resident for nearly 30 years before moving to Texas, I can remember other ethically challenged Illinois Governors like "Honest" Otto Kerner, Richard "Shoebox" Ogilvie and Dan Walker.

As far as the Republican's desperate attempts to link Obama to Blago, fuhgetaboutit. Obama was just another person Blago was trying to shakedown for money and favors. That's the beginning and end of Obama's "involvement" in this sad affair.

I voted for Mr. Obama, I find it difficult to believe that such an outspoken advocate of ethics and morality did not personally comment about the Illinois situation and a mid-level Obama spokesman did. Could historical Illinois political corruption have influenced his reluctance to personally comment?

I'll do the governors job after he steps down and goes to prison for the rest of his life (I hope). I have allot more going for me. At least I'm honest and will not screw the illinois tax payers out of their hard earned money. I would work for the benefit of the people and not expect the people to work for my benefits. I believe change is needed not only on capital hill, but the state capitals all 50 as well. I commend the FBI for working for the people of illinois and would like to thank them very much.

Thanks for your time.

Another sure sign that Obama is a follower, not a leader. He needed to first calculate the political blowback before he made a decision on what he should think. I guess it's getting a little warm under the collar for Obama.

Funny how the GOP tries to blame Obama for what the Gov did while at the same time preaching personal responsibility. My thinks the GOP complains too much, and to there own down fall. Just like the boy who stuck his finger in the dike when they have a legitimate case they will be seen as dishonest brokers. They should wait until Big Daddy O really does something wrong. Otherwise they risk keeping him on his toes and then never getting the chance to pounce. Keep you power dry GOP. Wait until you see the whites in his eyes.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   December 10th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Not only should he step down, he should step into a nice orange jumpsuit. He is crooked as a dog's hind leg and should spend a good long time in the worst part of Federal prison.

I sure hope PE Obama will not be held responsible for a husband caught cheating on his wife in Illinois and USA at large!!!. Even if a baby cries in the US today, the media will try to create a story to suggest it might hurt Barrack Obama. Common this is madness. Let's stop it.

Ash   December 10th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Good! How could anyone expect him to lead the state, knowing he had been arrested for these charges? They are not going to arrest him without evidence! Government officials need to be held to high standards since they are our leaders and if they cannot stay within the laws themselves, then they should be taken from their roles. I am glad that Obama is trying to hold our government to the highest standards! Thank you!

John Galt in Colorado   December 10th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Abe Froman - Chicago   December 10th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

To my fellow Illinois residents – we only have us to blame. We voted Blagojevich back into office, even with all the alleged pay to play scandals.

That should of been our red flag, sometime not all the time, but sometimes, where there is smoke, there is fire.

Mike - Missouri   December 10th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Obama believes Illinois lawmakers should "put in place a process to select a new senator that will have the trust and confidence of the the people of Illinois, WOW that will be a first for Illinois, I can't believe that Obaba is calling for this and the resignation of the "Gov" !

Perhaps he wants the "Gov" to go before his ties to the "Gov" are exposed?

Greg   December 10th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

With the words "Innocent until proven guilty" in the back of our minds, why would the man elected to the highest position in our country call for the
resignation unless he knew he was guilty???????

Conservatism is an unpatriotic political philosophy and it needs to be disregarded as a rational option for the nation.

pam Eugene OR   December 10th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Thank God Blagojevich didn't like Obama. I can't believe he called ore PE a mother --er! The audacity of Obama not willing to "Pay to Play" with him. Obama did offer his appreciation but that fell way short of what the Gov. wanted.
The sheer greed of this man is really amazing. He wanted whatever he could get and I don't think he will be too pleased with what he will receive.
He probably will have to be dragged out there considering he had the nerve to even go in today.

Leiv   December 10th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Resign or impeach him not just strip him of the choice. I hope the Illinois people are talking to their representatives and senators in their State. The people are the ones who need to act fast. We are the one's who elect these officials and we are the ones who need to stand up and say something to get them out. He cannot effectively govern with this on him.

Chicago GOP   December 10th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Who would be allowed to run in this special election? I would imagine they would have to allow anyone to run. Hopefully this leads to a GOP senator :) Nonetheless (and more realistically) we will be able to vote for a person based on their character and political opinions. If we select Jackson, we are doing the opposite of Martin Luther King Jr's goals...selecting a political figure BASED on color. He is not the best candidate for the job. As long as we have people who perpetuate the need to differentiate based on color, racial lines will always exist!

cat   December 10th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Mike   December 10th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

I applaud this decision because it is the right thing to do. Now that Obama has made it to the White House, he is in a much better position to clean up Chicago politics and I am encouraged to see him move so decisively getting Blagojevich out of the picture. This is great news for Illinois and the republic!

Nathan   December 10th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Good. Now, let's allow the president-elect and his cabinet to get back to work on the myriad of problems this nation is facing.

It's the smart and ethical thing to do... Unfortunately Blagojevich, from what I can read, is neither "smart" nor "ethical".

BTW: Who wants to give odds on a George Jr. pardon for Scooter Libby?

Godluvr   December 10th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

As a Democrat, I am appalled at what an arrogant tool Blagojevich is. While technically, it appears he may not have broken any laws (did money/favors actually exchange hands? We won't know until all is revealed), this moron needs to step down. STAT.

He needs to tender his resignation, let his Lt. Gov. choose Obama's successor, and grow up and accept responsibility for his actions. Good riddance to trash, I say.

Oh, and he can take that moron Charles Rangel with him, too.

Although, this is the right thing for Obama to be doing, it might not be the right thing to do considering how unbalanced this govenor is.

I fully expect a pack of lies and rhetoric from Blagojevich concerning Obama as a result of Obama asking him to resign which will all be quite a distraction for the transition team.

Sharon Kitchen   December 10th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

I believe that Obama and Gibbs are very correct.
Thank you , President -Elect Obama.

Emmanuel   December 10th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Now the HATERS out there will try to find something new on Obama. How can Obama being a President-Elect with all the troubles he faces to fix our economy and manage a successful transition be busy looking backwards to his senate sit to the extent of committing crime? You republicans and race haters better hide your disgusting and ancient ways of thinking. May God forgive all of you I hope you call on Bush and Rove to do the same and speak the truth.

Sweetie   December 10th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

What about the trust and confidence of the American People that our PE isn't as dirty as all the Politicians in Chicago?

With the Bailout money going to buy up other banks instead of giving credit a kick start, we have reason not to TRUST!

Spencer/Virginia   December 10th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

President Obama fights against corruption. So I knew he'll as the governor to resign.

an american first   December 10th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Special election is how all these senators should be replaced regardless of this particular situation with the current governon in Illinois. Think about it. If McCain would have been the President, then his replacement would be decided by Napalitano – a democrat. This is not fair. If special elections are expensive and they are worried about low turnout because people simply don't know about the candidates, then the second choice should be that the senator who is leaving the office should decide his/her successor – obviously given that the person is leaving the office for the right reason and not wrong reasons. That way, the people who elected him are still represented – not by him/her but his/her choice.

Indyman   December 10th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

You scare me Barack! With all your connections!

Amazing how you want everyone to resign once they have been identified as crooks, but until then – you rock and roll with them :-)

BevAnn   December 10th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

We need to figure out how to fire elected officials. Waiting for a resignation or impeachment takes too long. At the very least, he should be relinquished of his power, the state should have an acting governor and if Blago's name is cleared he can come back. This behavior is unacceptable – intolerable – on any scale.

Doug   December 10th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Like, DUH?? Seems about a day late, but I guess he had to consult with his cabinet and get the script in the teleprompter before going public after reaching such an astute opinion...

The Dawg   December 10th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Good to see the pattern holds. Obama's initial reaction to any issue is always weak. Then, after he's had 24 hours to ask people what he should have said, he comes to the conclusion that most people believed was correct to begin with. Can't wait to see how he handles a real crisis. Maybe Hillary wasn't too far off on her 3 a.m. ad.

Ms. Jenny   December 10th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

All this belly-aching from bitter Republicans about how Blogo's actions somehow reflect on Obama is a joke. In fact, it was Obama's own CoS who turned Blogo in!

Obama never really like this guy. I believe Obama supported him during Blogo's first campaign for Gov, but ever since then Obama has kept him at an arm's length. Presumably, Obama realized soon after Blogo took office that he was a shady character, and that's why Obama didn't want Blogo to have anything to do with his presidential campaign.

Jos/TN   December 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

of course he should, once under indictment, arrested, policticans should be required to resign their post, forbidding their arrogance, they seem to operate above the law

CSanchez   December 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Of course, he should resign and go to straight to jail. He is totally unbelievable. This man is a crook – not a servant.

Capital Insider   December 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Obama, that is the right move! We should continue to call for the resignations of any corrupt politician out there, regardless of party affiliation. The good news is that Lt. Governor Quinn is a Democrat, so hopefully the new Illinois Senator is a Democrat too!

As I have said many times before, corruption crosses party lines, this is nolonger about Republicans and Democrats trying to steal/buy elections, this is about turning this country around.

We need to really investigate our elected leaders and hold them accountable for their actions. Lets get to the bottom of this.

Ed   December 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Two Words: Rick Moranis

SNL, take it away!

energy   December 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Should the candidates for the special election include Republicans?

r sisk, nevada   December 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

I guess once many elected officials get into office they think they are above the law. What an idiot!!! Did he think he would not get caught or did he just lose all common sense.

Get this dork out of office and throw the book at him. He is a disgrace.

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia in CA   December 10th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

The president-elect should say it himself.

Lala-Waxhaw NC   December 10th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

I agree he should resign. This is such a tragic issue with the people of Illinos.

Christopher   December 10th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Resign....that guy needs to be denied bail...what a dirt bag..

Bob Coen   December 10th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Why do you guys and all the MSM not mention the Governors party affiliation??? I watched the Today show this morning and in about 12 minutes covering the story they never referred to the Democratic Governor as that.
Oh wait, thats right your all lefties and in the tank for Obama and the Democrats!! I forgot!!!

Theresa   December 10th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

What did Obama know about Jesse Jackson Jr?
What conversations did team-Obama have about their preferred candidate to replace Obama?

Off to a bad start. Change is looking the same.

Ty   December 10th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

I have come to realize that some people will do anything to advance themselve even throwing someone under the bus to advance his failing career, he had no plans on buying a plumbing busniess nor interested as a independent for fair justice, he is an Opportunist ait is true , that he is coming out with a book , what in the hell kind of light can he shed on politics or the ecomony.
All i know is , john McCain open that door for him and of course look what he has done.
If you didn't agree with his politics or the angle he was going , just say that, as a matter of fact why wait until after the election and pour salt on the womb, I am a obama supporter , and i did like the way John McCain ended the election gracefully, and will to work Bi-partisan to solve these US problem.
You Name should be Changed from
JOE THE PLUMBER to JOE THE OPPROTUNIST !!!!

Keith   December 10th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Where are all the bloggers today for comment about the never-ending corrupt Dems and there leader Obama??????!!!!!!!!!!

Irene Harney   December 10th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I believe Obama has the right idea. If the governor does not step down, we must impeach him. We have a Lt. Governor that is capable of running this state. Why would we want to have special elections and maybe loose the seat in the Senate? I worked in his first campaign and was at every downstate function. I'm outraged!

G.R.I.T.S. - Girl Raised in the South   December 10th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I understand everyone's sentiments about effectiveness in office, but what happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Tim in VA   December 10th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Barry should stay out of this. It's not his business. He should have done something when he was in the IL senate. He didn't do anything about the corruption when he had the chance. Why?

Mickie   December 10th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

I don't personally believe one person should have the sole power to fill any position anyway. Especially not when it comes to an important post such as senator. There are just too many dynasties in this Country and the people have little say anymore.

Susan   December 10th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

It's ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS this man would think he could get away with such a thing!!!! People want to think this type of stuff doesn't or wouldn't happen with our political officials who are supposed to have such high standards of trust, integrity and honesty. But I'm sure this thing happens all the time with many leaders who get too big for their britches. This guy just got caught!!! It's just downright amazing to me! I'm PROUD OF OBAMA for calling for him to resign!

Gen Patton   December 10th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Why? Because you are the "Annointed one"? What happened to innocent until proven guilty, which I believe he is guilty.

Cal   December 10th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Wow just because Obama didn't bribe Blagojevich enough to get his vote in he goes after him. Now that's chicago style politics.

Flip in NC   December 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I wonder how much that will cost him. Of course, the sooner he gets that guy out of the news the better off he will be. He also needs to make sure the corruption investigation stalls before it leads to his doorstep.

LineBacker   December 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

So where is "Innocent until proven guilty?" This kind of rush to judgment is going to be the hallmark of the Obamastration.

S. Dukes   December 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I am so ashamed of this public servant

rich   December 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Well duh! What is he waiting on?! The man got caught with his hand right in the cookie jar. He has no defense other than the devil made him do it.

Dave   December 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Blago is a disgrace and should resign...or face the legislature come monday! When the President-Elect tells you to resign, that should be Rod's sign to take his bags and leave (to Club Fed, maybe). Do us, the taxpayers a favor, and just bounce....please?!

It didn't surprise me that the Feds got him (he was going up the creek anyway), I'm surprised they got him yesterday morning. Best News I've Had all day yesterday!

sglman4Obama   December 10th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Windy City corruption has once again swept through the State House of Illinois! and Jesse Jackson Jr. has his hands in the mess. Why does none of this surprise me? The most honest politician in Ill just became president. Integrity and decency left when Barack moved to 1600. The governors actions are not surprising if you know the history of the state!

Darrell Burks   December 10th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

This Govenor is an idiot. He must resign and be put in jail after due process. President-Elect Obama is right.

Samilton   December 10th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

He's absolutely right. The Gov. should resign or face impeachment! This type of conduct should not be tolerated.

Aaron Christner   December 10th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Honest Goverment has arrived. Thank you Barack. America ,President-elect Obama and his transition Team have done more in 4 weeks, than Bush has done in 8 years. Again Barack thank you for putting our country back on track... Its going to be a great 4 years America.

John in Ohio   December 10th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Good move, future president.

Also, good move by Durbin, who I personally have always admired, to call for the Illinois legislature to authorize a speedy special election to elect a replacement Senator. That's the best option possible under the circumstances.

As much as I always supported Obama, this is why it's a PITA to have Senators as presidential candidates. Now there needs to be a replacement found for Obama, Biden, and Clinton, since all three were sitting Senators. That puts a lot of power in the hands of the governors, and the governors of both Illinois and New York are not exactly known for being good at dealing with power.

obama-mama   December 10th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Good for you President-Elect. Clear out the garbage....

Virginia   December 10th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Resigning won't make any difference if he is going to "rat out" the Prez-elect. The house of cards is already falling......

andyb   December 10th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

I'll second that.

femi   December 10th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Kathleen   December 10th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Yes. Absolutely. His hand was in the preverbial "Cookie Jar". Tapes are tapes. Nixon also learned this the hard way.

He won't resign but there is no doubt in my mind that he should.

Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   December 10th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Replace one "crook" with another..........called it "special", but it all comes out the same in the wash.

Joe, Chicago IL   December 10th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Translated: Blogo, take the hit man. If you do and keep quiet, I will take care of you man.

Noel   December 10th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

I don't really understand Obama's flip-flopping. I remember yesterday that he said it was a sad day in Chicago. But I believe that if the federal prosecutors have something on the governor, then the governor should resign.

Wright   December 10th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Obama has a lot of friends, the Rev. Wright, and now the governor of Illinois, who else? He is no angel himself, or is it simply bad influence?? American people derserve better.

Scott NYC Independent   December 10th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

The people of Illinoie should be calling for his head. He put a cloud over the state that was having one of its best PR periods in its history. They should rush his trial through, and based on the tapes he should be found guilty and he then should be sentenced on January 20, 2009. Poetic Justice.

GET REAL.   December 10th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

On a scale of 1-5 (5 being best):

Timeliness of announcement: 3 (could've said it sooner)
What was said: 5 (spoken as articulately as usual)
Effort to distance himself: 4 (he could be a little more scathing, but maybe it's good he isn't)

Nimi from NY   December 10th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Obama suggests the governor's resignation be for his inability to lead at this time. He did not try and convict the guy before the jury does.

il resident   December 10th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I have to say that I agree and he should be impeached i live in IL and have nothing good to say about the Blagojevich. he has ruined so much in our state its not funny. So please Gov. resign and enjoy your vacation at club Fed youve earned it

Franky   December 10th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

Ohhh yeah, he's definitely gonna be gone now...

chubbs   December 10th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

It's nice to know us brainwashed americans voted a person from the great Illinois political tree in office. CHANGE BABY!!

L. Tran, TX   December 10th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

eds   December 10th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Jail time should happen.

FreeNLovIt   December 10th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Yeah, I feel sorry for Blago. He did a lot of good things for the poor and helpless. I think he just snapped and lost it. But what he said or done, is not any worse than W and Chen ey. I dont know. It really was stupid for him to do stupid things.

Amber (Dem in FL)   December 10th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Okay Governor....go on....get under that bus with the Clintons, Rev. Wright, the liberal wing, and the rest.

thriveblogger   December 10th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Blagojevich should resign! Or better yet, impeached and then locked up.
My question is this, will he still get his taxpayer retirement benefits?
