Obama is now calling on Blagojevich to step down.

(CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama Wednesday joined calls for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign.

"The president-elect agrees with [Illinois] Lt. Governor Quinn and many others that under the current circumstances it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois," Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

On Tuesday Blagojevich was arrested on federal conspiracy charges. Prosecutors alleged in their complaint that Blagojevich pressured candidates to replace Obama in the Senate for campaign contributions and other benefits.

Gibbs said Obama also supported legislation that will be considered by Illinois lawmakers on Monday to authorize a special election to choose his successor.

Obama believes Illinois lawmakers should "put in place a process to select a new senator that will have the trust and confidence of the the people of Illinois," Gibbs said.

Blago, no matter his party affiliation, MUST resign and cooperate with the investigation. I agree with PE Obama. What a disgrace. Not only corrupt, but based on the tapes, maybe a bit unbalanced. He called Obama an expletive because he couldn't get to him. And even his wife...in on the "play." My sentiments to the people of Illinois. Maybe this the beginning of reform (not as in maverick :)

As for those developing their own story lines out of this...you know, the Obama ties. Really? Just stop it...even Blago has not been found guilty yet. But I forget, for some of you ~ if Obama sneezes, he caused a tsunami. I love being an American. Only here would you be allowed to espouse your hatred to such level.

How refreshing will the next 8 years be...answer anyone? :)

This governor does not have a relationship with Obama. Just because they are both for Illinois you narrow minded people want to put blame on Obama. I guess with the same reasoning, Obama killed Jennifer Hudson's family in Chicago.... wake up idiots.

I think Greg is right on! Obama is calling for the resignation (which is the correct thing to do) of Blago almost 24 hours from his arrest. It suggests that the evidence is pretty overwhelming or he has personal knowledge of Blago's guilt. Either way, the bum has to go and this country better start making an effort to "clean up" all of politics and
the widespread individual and corporate corruption that abounds.

It's amazing the level of hate leveled against Obama. Here it is a white man, Blagoveich is guilty of a crime, and yet Obama is getting indicted by the media. It's amazing that how high this qualified black man has to jump just to stay above the jealousy.

What people don't understand is that for him to resign while claiming innocence is impossible. And in Illinois, you don't resign until you're convicted. All he needs to do is call in enough markers or pressure enough equally guilty members of the legislature to avoid impeachment.

As to taking away his right to fill the senate seat and setting up a special election, who's going to decide who gets to be on the ballot. There's hardly time for a petition drive.

Illinois politics are corrupt through and through. But fear not blind sheep. I am sure that none of the Illinois politicians that Obama has picked are corrupt. It just could not be! Obama does no wrong!

The notion that Chicago and the State of Illinois are more corrupt politically than the rest of the country is pure bull. The American political system is corrupt from coast to coast, state to state.

Oh, you know what, Vanessa? Here in America we have the right not to engage in the Obama love fest. We don't have to "move to Canada," as you suggested. We don't have to love the fact that you Obots promoted a junior Senator to the White House. LOL. You, my dear, can deal with that!

Sounds like time for 'change'. Hold a speicial election and have Obama's seat won by a Republican.

Godluvr, I'm sure you didn't mean to exclude these names:

    William J. Jefferson (D-LA, bribery)
    Elliot Spitzer (D-NY, prostitution scandal))
Kwame Kilpatric (D-Detroit, purgery, sex scandal)
Barney Frank (D-MA, gay prostitution ring run from his home)
    Charlie Rangel (D-NY, tax evasion)
    Jim Traficant (D-OH, bribery, racketeering)
Robert Torricelli (D-NJ, illegal campaign contributions)
Tim Mahoney (D-FL, sex scandal, payoffs)
    Edwin Edwards (D-LA, extortion)

Can we knock off the holier than thou attitude now?

Did he actually accept money or anything else and promote someone to fill Obama's seat? Looks like the feds acted before a crime was actually committed.

Ironic that the same people who thought the prosocution of Scooter Libby by this same guy was not proper are now on the anti-corruption bandwagon I say to FitzPatrick "well done on both counts." Could you investigate President Bush now?

By the way this monster governor is quoted on the tapes as saying that he "counted get anything from Obama" As far as I am concerned Obam is no more responsible for the idiot criminal governor than Sarah Palin is for Senator Bride Guy from Alaska. Whic is to say ZERO.
