Obama calls on Blagojevich to resign

Obama is now calling on Blagojevich to step down.

(CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama Wednesday joined calls for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign.

"The president-elect agrees with [Illinois] Lt. Governor Quinn and many others that under the current circumstances it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois," Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

On Tuesday Blagojevich was arrested on federal conspiracy charges. Prosecutors alleged in their complaint that Blagojevich pressured candidates to replace Obama in the Senate for campaign contributions and other benefits.

Gibbs said Obama also supported legislation that will be considered by Illinois lawmakers on Monday to authorize a special election to choose his successor.

Obama believes Illinois lawmakers should "put in place a process to select a new senator that will have the trust and confidence of the the people of Illinois," Gibbs said.

Wow...what a daring and bold move by The Messiah.....of course he is going to call on him to resign...he has to distance himself as far as he can from this guy before he is indicted for the Reszco deal.

President-Elect Joe Biden....well at least he is constitutionally eligible.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Pat Quinn. My personal feeling is that he along with Dick Durbin are the two shining stars that we have in this politicaly incorrect state that I live in. I hope that their leadership can guide us out of this mess and with Durbin in Washington, Obama president and Pat Quinn our governor, we could again be proud to say that we live in Illinois.

Oh just as I suspected...the rabid right trying to pin this loser on the PE.
I feel like every day there just ends up being some new story that the crazy conspiracy theorists try to turn around and blame on Obama just because he won and their candidate didn't.

Didn't you ever think that maybe you should pray that he does a good job as President instead of fighting against everything he does? You are all American citizens, right? If the country completely gets flushed, will you not suffer those consequences too? Stop being such sore losers and try being optimistic for a change. What this man does is going to affect you one way or another, and he is your president for the next 4 years whether you like him or not. So I would think you would be hoping for a success.

Frank, the media has NOT been against Bush since Day 1. Do you even REMEMBER 9/11, or do you just like to reference it ad nauseum like most conservatives? I remember everyone, including the media, being smitten with him in the days and weeks afterward. And I remember the media being quite amicable to him when he took office. But hey, what does historical evidence matter when it doesn't jive with your narrow conception of reality?

If anyone is against Bush, it's because of his incompetence and the low-life people he chose to surround himself with.

Let's hope that Rod Blagojevich does not produce his own tape recordings or recordings from his best buddy Tony Reszko. For those who have forgotten. Tony Reszko sold Obama the lot next to his Chicago house for a discount. Tony Reszko has corraborated testimonies from Ali Ata, Joseph Cari, and Stuard Levine. Tony is now negotiating his sentancing deal.

You can take the politician out of Chicago, but you can't take the Chicago out of the politician.

Funny how 10 minutes ago I read on CNN that Obama released a statement claiming "since it's still an investigation it wouldn't be right for him to comment". Now ten minutes later when the wind is blowing hard enough he falls over to ask for the Gov.'s resignation. Hypocrisy 101 ladies and gents

    Ed Stack,

it's just inconceivable to you that our PE could actually be above reproach, isn't it? Don't you think that the opposition during the campaign has dug as deep as they could? If there was anything to find, it would have been found already.

Being a resident of Illinois, it is no secret that our state political system has been corrupt for as long as many of us can remember. These atrocities occur on all levels of our Government, with little being done to fix the problems at ANY level. I couldn't believe during the election coverage that this issue was not brought to the forefront of the campaigns seeing Obama was born from this cesspool of dirty politics. That being said, why is there no outcry after the bumbling of the question posed to the president elect about his involvement in Blago's current disgrace? Is it not obvious to anyone else that a hood has been placed over the eyes of America when a man can buy an election on the premise of changing the political spectrum of America, when in fact, he is the poster child for what can be achieved through lies, rhetoric, and deception. To say he was not involved in this situation with Blago, or any other of the numerous scandals that have plagued the political monster that is the State of Illinois’ is ludicrous. Wasn’t this sort of scandal supposed to be what Barack and his “CHANGE” anthem was all about? Enough is enough. Will someone please ask the difficult questions that need to be answered? Thank you

an again in these comments the ignorant speak the most.

The governor has expressed dislike for Obama and his people because they would NOT pay him off. They were NOT friends!

The media is out to make money, if Obama was involved, you bet your butt it would be EVERYWHERE.

When running for political office, candidates are often forced to rub shoulders with unsavory characters. May I remind all of those looking to discredit President-elect Obama of two words-Keating Five.

Oh yes because the republicans NEVER lie and cheat to put themselves ahead. They are TOTALLY out there for our best interests.

    Get a clue.

I personally think that the reason Obama has been surprised and a bit hesitant about this is that probably two of his team, actually were the whistle-blowers on this deal. Valerie Jarrett has to be candidate 1 and she withdrew her name the day after talking to Blago. The other person is probably Rahmbo. I think they kept Obama out of it but they reported what transpired when Valerie talked to Blago. Time will tell and if this is the case, it's obvious why they are being tentative – they are now part of the investigation.

It's hardball politics, but it's appropriate. Fitzerald should give Blagojevich a choice, either resign or he'll include the Governor's wife in the investigation.

Liberalism is an evil that has crept into America and it must be eradicated for this country to continue & Obama understands this very well. You fools with your blind hatred have elected a Democrat who wants to be loved and adored by middle America much more than please the radical left that brought him into the White House. He is wiser than you and this will be proved as we watch him turn away from the very ones that brought him to power!
